LeBron James Is Leading An Initiative To Protect Voting Rights For African Americans

America is at a watershed moment in the continuing fight against systemic oppression, as people around the country continue to protest the type of racial profiling and excessive force that led to the death of 46-year-old George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police last month.

Athletes from all major sports have added their voices to the cause, with many leveraging both their wealth and their considerable influence toward meaningful change. With the November presidential election fast approaching, much emphasis has been put toward galvanizing the Democratic base and mobilizing voters to oust Donald Trump from the White House.

LeBron James tweeted this week about what he sees as the structural racism in the American voting process, and on Wednesday, he took that a step further by announcing that he and other athletes are forming a group designed to protect the voting rights of African Americans.

Via Jonathan Martin of The New York Times:

The organization, called More Than a Vote, will partly be aimed at inspiring African-Americans to register and to cast a ballot in November. But as the name of the group suggests, Mr. James and other current and former basketball stars — including Trae Young, Skylar Diggins-Smith and Jalen Rose — will go well beyond traditional celebrity get-out-the-vote efforts.

“Yes, we want you to go out and vote, but we’re also going to give you the tutorial,” Mr. James said. “We’re going to give you the background of how to vote and what they’re trying to do, the other side, to stop you from voting.”

Black Americans have historically been one of the most disenfranchised groups of voters in this country, often the target of legislation specifically designed to suppress their turnout. According to the ACLU, 16 states have introduced voter suppression laws since 2011, ones that, among other things, reduce or eliminate early voting, Election Day registration, voter registration drives, and mail-in ballots.

At least nine states have a so-called “use it or lose it” law that makes it legal to purge votes if those voters haven’t participated in recent elections. In Georgia in 2018, for instance, more than 50,000 voters were eliminated for that very reason, 70 percent of which were African Americans, according to the APM reports.

Voter suppression also takes place in subtler, more insidious ways. In the 2016 elections, researchers found that voters in predominately black neighborhoods were 74 percent more likely than whites to stand in line for more than a half hour to cast their ballot, and multiples research studies have shown that voter ID laws in more than a dozen states disproportionately affect minorities.

Trevor Noah Rips Trump For Promoting A ‘Batsh*t’ Conspiracy About The Elderly Protester Who Was Bulldozed By Buffalo Police

On Tuesday, as he’s wont to do, rather than try to mollify a calamitous situation, he made things worse. Last week, among nationwide protests that erupted after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, video spread across social media clearly showing Buffalo police shoving a septuagenarian to the ground, causing blood to pour out of his head. The two police involved were suspended, which angered their colleagues. It also angered the president, who, on Tuesday morning, tweeted out a baseless conspiracy theory alleging that the victim, 75-year-old Martin Gugino, may have been a member of Antifa.

The backlash to Trump’s tweet was quick and passionate, and Tuesday night late night hosts roundly took him to task. Perhaps the most passionate was The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah, newly back after a two-week break and ready to wonder aloud what on earth is wrong with a sitting president parroting nonsense while trying to smear the name of an old-timer who’s still in the hospital.

“Trump is so desperate to defend the police that instead of admitting that maybe they used excessive force and that none of them helped a person who was bleeding out on the ground, he turns around and blames the old man from that video for being an antifa provocateur who busted his head open on purpose,” Noah said. “And I mean, I can’t believe I have to say it, but that is some bats*it crazy theory. Let me tell you something—if someone came up to me with a plan that involved busting my head open on the sidewalk, I would ask them to come up with a better plan.”

He continued:

“I mean, how do you look at that video, see that old man, and think that he’s an antifa provocateur? You think that old man is causing chaos. Who sees that? Like, I feel like Trump is the kind of person who watched the movie Up and he thinks it’s a story about an elderly terrorist who hijacks a balloon house.”

You can watch Noah’s full statement in the video above.

‘Batwoman’ Won’t Be Killing Off Kate Kane Despite Ruby Rose’s Departure

Last month, Ruby Rose shocked comic book content fans by announcing she was leaving Batwoman, on which she played lead hero Kate Kane, after only one season. The reason was reportedly less than amicable, and it was revealed the show would carry on with a new protagonist, reportedly killing off Kane. But, as per The Hollywood Reporter, that last bit has proven to be incorrect.

Showrunner Caroline Dries refuted the claim, saying that while Rose is leaving the show, that doesn’t mean that bridge has to be burned down. But it’s not necessarily because Rose could always return for a cameo.

“As a lesbian who’s been working as a writer for the past fifteen years, I’m well aware of the ‘Bury Your Gays’ trope and I have no interest in participating in it,” Dries said. She continued:

“That’s why it’s important to me as the showrunner to clarify any misinformation out there about Kate Kane and recasting Batwoman. Like you, I love Kate Kane — she’s the reason I wanted to do the show. We’ll never erase her. In fact, her disappearance will be one of the mysteries of season two. I don’t want to give away any of our surprises, but to all our devoted fans, please know that LGBTQ+ justice is at the very core of what Batwoman is and we have no intention of abandoning that.”

The term ”Bury Your Gays” refers to a trope in which gay characters are seen as more expendable than their straight counterparts. A guest column about it in THR singled out shows like Jane the Virgin, The 100, The Magicians, and The Walking Dead, which suspiciously offed prominent LGBTQ+ characters. Batwoman made history as the first scripted live-action TV series with a lesbian superhero protagonist.

Disneyland Has Announced Plans To Reopen Around The Same Time As The Nation’s Movie Theaters

After the coronavirus pandemic caused the United States to go into almost nationwide lockdown, one of the companies hardest hit was one of the richest: Disney. Suddenly many of their sources of income — movies, cruise ships, and theme parks — were shut down; things go so bad newly former CEO Bob Iger had to temporarily return. They’ve been very openly itching to at least open some of their parks, with Disney World in Orlando set to reopen in early July. Now, as per Entertainment Weekly, they’ve set another big date.

As per the report, the company’s California parks, among them their crown jewel Disneyland, is aiming for a July 17 opening. If that date sounds familiar, it’s because it’s also the same one chosen to open most of the nation’s movie theaters as well, with the hopes that audiences will…well, not pack multiplexes but social distance while watching Christopher Nolan’s breathlessly anticipated Tenet in a dark room with strangers and no windows.

But at least theme parks are for the most part outdoors (except for the rides in enclosed spaces, also without light and windows and filled with strangers). The parks set for reopening are Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, with their hotels slated for July 23. (The Downtown Disney District, meanwhile, will open a touch earlier, on July 9.)

Of course, as with many other businesses reopening while the pandemic is still going strong, there will be some restrictions. In a statement, Disney brass said there will be “enhanced health and safety measures,” and that certain “experiences that draw large group gatherings — such as parades and nighttime spectaculars — will return at a later date. While character meet and greets will be temporarily unavailable, characters will be in the parks in new ways to entertain and delight guests.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, California has 137,000 confirmed Covid cases, though the numbers are estimated to be even higher. The state is currently averaging nearly 3,000 new cases and about 60 deaths per day.
