Jeff Pearlman’s New Book Details The Time Shaq Slapped Kobe In An L.A. Pickup Run

The Kobe-Shaq Lakers are as fascinating a team as there has been in the NBA, a force that, at its peak, was one of the most dominant teams ever, but was undone by internal strains and tensions that eventually became too great to overcome.

That team is the subject of Jeff Pearlman’s new book, Three-Ring Circus: Kobe, Shaq, Phil, and the Crazy Years of the Lakers Dynasty, that released on Tuesday, and ESPN ran a number of excerpts from the piece for its launch. They detail a young Kobe Bryant’s rise from an awkward Italian kid to a high school sensation in the U.S., but most notably the strained relationship between the two Lakers superstars in Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.

One such story comes from Olden Polynice, who recalls a pickup run in Los Angeles during the 1998-99 lockout in which Bryant’s constant antagonizing of Shaq and claims that the Lakers were “my team” and that Shaq was “not a leader” eventually got him smacked (and, if not for Polynice running in to grab the big man, much worse) by the Big Diesel.

Several of the participants stepped in to separate the two, and the game eventually continued. But it no longer felt even slightly relaxed or friendly. “We probably went up and down the court two more times,” Polynice said. “Kobe goes to the basket, scores, screams at Shaq, ‘Yeah, motherf—er! That s— ain’t gonna stop me!’”

O’Neal grabbed the ball in order to freeze action.

“Say another motherf—ing word,” he said, staring directly at Bryant.

“Aw, f— you,” Bryant said. “You don’t kn–”

Smack!

O’Neal slapped Bryant across the face. Hard.

“His hands are huge,” said Blount, who was playing in the game. “The noise was loud.”

Here is Polynice’s recollection: “Then Shaq swung again at Kobe, but he missed. S—! I run over and grab Shaq, because I’m big enough to do so. And Shaq keeps swinging, but everything’s missing because I have his arms. I’m grabbing on to Shaq, holding on for dear life, yelling, ‘Somebody grab Kobe! Seriously — somebody grab him!’ Because I’m holding Shaq and Kobe’s taking swings at him. At one point Shaq gets an arm loose and he pops me in the head. Seriously, no good deed goes unpunished. And I’m telling you, if Shaq gets loose he would have killed Kobe Bryant. I am not exaggerating. It was along the lines of an I-want-to-kill-you-right-now punch. He wanted to end Kobe’s life in that moment.”

Bryant was undeterred. “You’re soft!” he barked. “Is that all you’ve got? You’re soft!” Blount begged Bryant to stop talking. “You’re not helping,” he said. “Just shut up.” The altercation was finally broken up when Jerome Crawford, O’Neal’s bodyguard, walked onto the floor and calmed his friend down. O’Neal was furious. “You can’t touch him in practice,” he wrote of Bryant. “He’s acting like Jordan, where some players thought you couldn’t touch Mike. Whenever somebody ripped Kobe, he’d call a foul. After a while, I’m like, ‘Listen, man, you don’t have to start calling that punk s—.’” As he walked from the court, Polynice looked at a shaken Kupchak and said, loudly, “You should sign me just for that.”

The book seems like a fascinating look inside the dynamic of a team that managed to simultaneously reach the highest of highs and lowest of lows, with their two superstars at the center of it all, somewhat ironically trying desperately to separate themselves from the other while becoming attached forever with their on-court success.

‘The Daily Show’ Made A Strong ‘Best Karen’ Pick While Announcing The Pandemmy Award Winners

Last week, The Daily Show opened up voting for its first, and hopefully last, The Pandemmy Awards. With categories like “Best Karen” and “Best Bulls**t,” the awards show hoped to recognize the very best of the worst coronavirus responses by mankind and even nature. The entrees included a grab bag of viral moments from anti-mask supermarket freakouts to Donald Trump’s infamous attempt to walk down a ramp. (Thanks to his questionable handling of the pandemic, you’re going to see the president pop up a lot in the results. Just FYI.)

After over one million votes, here are the big winners for The 2020 Pandemmy Awards, and God help us if we’re doing this again next year:

Best Bullshit: Kayleigh McEnany – “I Will Never Lie to You”
Best Costume Design: Matt Gaetz – “Mocking Gas Mask”
Best Cure: Disinfectant
Best Foreign Film: Italians Singing on Balconies
Best Karen: “I Am Legend”
Best Kevin: Man Dragged Out By Son
Best Picture: Gov. Cuomo: SLUT
Best Supporting Disaster: Gender Reveal Wildfire
Best Supporting Supporter: Dr. Robert Redfield – “Your Decisive Leadership”
Most Optimistic Performance: Donald Trump – “Like a Miracle It’ll Disappear”
Outstanding Achievement in Wishful Thinking: Dana Bash – “From a Human Standpoint”
Outstanding Stunt Coordination: Donald Trump

While all of the categories had some stiff competition, particularly the numerous COVID “cures” floated by the president since the start of the pandemic (remember when he said sunlight would kill it?), there were some strong entries in the Best Karen and Best Kevin categories — since certain Americans did not respond well to being told to wear a mask in public spaces. You can check out the other entries who didn’t make the cut below:

Polo G Gives A VIbrant ‘Tonight Show’ Performance Of ‘Martin & Gina’

Polo G makes his Tonight Show debut with the song “Martin & Gina” from his second studio album The GOAT, performing the song with a live band and a spring in his step. While the song is a departure from the Chicago rapper’s usual solemn fare, he keeps the same energy, rapping with a simple stage setup as the lighting effects around him accentuate the smooth single’s romantic overtures.

Polo released the video for “Martin & Gina” a little over a month ago, tapping into the inspiration for the song’s title to reimagine fan-favorite scenes from the sitcom Martin. The move proved to be a smart one, showing that the 21 year old can switch lanes from the darker subject matter he usually explores and show off his sense of humor and charm. “Martin & Gina” has since been certified Gold by RIAA, peaking at no. 61 on the Hot 100 chart.

Since debuting with Die A Legend in 2019, Polo G’s profile has risen considerably, landing him a spot on the 2020 XXL Freshman class, as well as making him a hot feature artist, with appearances on songs from Lil Durk (“3 Headed Goat“), Murda Beatz (“Doors Unlocked“), Calboy (“Fake Love”), and Juice WRLD (“Hate The Other Side”).

Taylor Swift Has Shared An Important Video Message On National Voter Registration Day

While Taylor Swift had maintained an apolitical public presence during the majority of her career, that has changed in recent years. Like many in entertainment, Swift has become a vocal critic of Donald Trump, and she wants to do all she can to prevent him from being re-elected. So, with today (September 22) being National Voter Registration Day, Swift has used her expansive social media platform to make sure her followers have all the information they need so they’ll be able to successfully vote in the 2020 election.

Today, Swift shared a selfie-style video on her Instagram Story, in which she begins, “Hey guys, it’s National Voter Registration Day today; The election is November 3rd. It’s really coming up.” She then explained that she has provided a link containing resources about voting, including vote.org links to information about registering to vote, how and when to vote early, requesting a ballot by mail, and checking your voting registration status. She concluded the post by making clear the value of voting in this year’s election: “We need everyone, and it is more important than I can even possibly say.”

Last month, Swift criticized Trump’s USPS cuts as a tactic to help ensure his re-election, writing on Twitter, “Trump’s calculated dismantling of USPS proves one thing clearly: He is WELL AWARE that we do not want him as our president. He’s chosen to blatantly cheat and put millions of Americans’ lives at risk in an effort to hold on to power. Donald Trump’s ineffective leadership gravely worsened the crisis that we are in and he is now taking advantage of it to subvert and destroy our right to vote and vote safely. Request a ballot early. Vote early.”

Lil Peep’s ‘Hellboy’ Mixtape Is Finally Hitting Streaming Services On Its Fourth Anniversary

Since Lil Peep’s death in 2017, his friends and family have continued to share a bevy of remastered and unreleased material. His Crybaby mixtape was uploaded on streaming services for the first time this June. The emo rapper even had a documentary made about his life, titled Everybody’s Everything, which was released alongside a 19-track album. Now, Lil Peep’s estate have announced yet another remastered project from the rapper is being released soon.

Peep’s Hellboy mixtape was uploaded to SoundCloud nearly four years ago, and to celebrate its anniversary, the rapper’s estate has decided to make it more accessible to fans by putting it on streaming services. The mixtape boasts 16 tracks and features Peep’s friends and frequent collaborators like Lil Tracy, Xavier Wulf, and more.

Hellboy was recorded with producer Smokeasac, who recalled Peep’s inspiration behind the album: “I remember when we made Hellboy. He explained to me why he chose the name. He explained that it was because he knew that Hellboy came off as intimidating and scary to some, but it was because he was like a book that was only judged by its cover. Hellboy was actually a super hero who had a huge heart and that’s exactly what Peep was; a super hero with a humongous heart.”

The Jennifer Aniston And Brad Pitt Reunion Was Arranged By… Dane Cook?

Who do we have to thank for Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston appearing on screen together for the first time since their 2005 divorce? Dane Cook, of course. The comedian, who sold out Madison Square Garden at the height of his fame (and later voiced Dusty Crophopper in Planes, another career milestone), organized the Fast Times at Ridgemont High virtual table read that gave us a shirtless Shia LaBeouf smoking weed in his car and Pitt and Aniston reenacting the film’s famous pool scene.

“When I text [Jennifer], she was — I’m not trying to make it more fluffy — she could not have been more delightful, game, excited,” Cook said on the Better Together with Maria Menounos (I miss her) podcast. “Again, I knew once those first few names were in there, when Brad Pitt started coming in, I was like, ‘Yes! This is gonna happen.’”

Cook, who is otherwise “happy and vibing” when not texting Jennifer Aniston, continued:

“There was no hesitation, there was no rules, there was no, nothing. There wasn’t anything like, were they not allowed… No! Zero. No drama. They both locked in. What you saw was absolutely what we had hoped. Which was just nice engagement between two massive, incredibly talented people!”

If there’s one thing that I love, it’s nice engagement between two massive, incredibly talented people. If there’s two things that I love, it’s nice engagement between two massive, incredibly talented people, and whatever Shia is doing here.

Kehlani Distances Herself From Social Media After A Fan Leaks Her Address

Bay Area singer Kehlani was forced to fast-track a move and distance herself from social media after a fan online found and shared her address, potentially putting her and her daughter in danger. The star revealed the leak in a now-deleted tweet from Sunday, saying she needed “major space from my supporters” as a result of the violation of her privacy. Although her statement began with an “lol,” recent events have shown that these sorts of incidents are no laughing matter.

“Lol wow I have to fast track my move cuz a stan account has found and shared my address,” she wrote Sunday afternoon, explaining why she won’t be as accessible in the future. “Don’t know how. Super not cool. Taking a major space from my supporters. Don’t ask why I will no longer be so responsive or will be MIA from interaction. I love y’all but it’s a wrap.” While the “Can I” singer is normally quite involved on Twitter, using the app to interact with fans and explain her musical moves, it looks like she’s going to be reeling in on future interactions.

While the benefits and drawbacks of “stan culture” have been debated endlessly, 2020 has shown plenty of real-world examples of the dark side of celebrity worship. Pop Smoke was killed after his address leaked online early this year, while Eminem, the man who coined the term Stan in the first place, was victim of a break-in by a fan the star wound up confronting as his security slept. It was later revealed that the real-life Stan was a repeat offender who had been stalking the rapper for some time.

Those incidents and this one highlight some of the dangers of being famous in an always-connected world. While fans may feel closer than ever to the stars they admire, the blurring of the lines between private and public life have been shown to have the potential for dire consequences — ones that Kehlani’s new move can hopefully help her avoid.

Kehlani is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Sebastian Stan Posted A Wine-Soaked Video Of Himself Watching ‘Gossip Girl’ On The Show’s Anniversary

No judgment here on quarantine watches. We are all resorting to some questionable selections these days, and Sebastian Stan is no exception, even if that includes a selection from his own body of work. The MCU’s Bucky Barnes recently got back to business on the Atlanta set of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but he’s shown that he’s taking his social distancing (and stance against “idiots” on Florida beaches) seriously). So on Saturday night, he decided to celebrate the thirteenth anniversary of the CW’s Gossip Girl premiere while reminiscing by himself.

Well, not by himself, really, since he shared the video on Instagram, where 1.2 million followers “liked” his effort, which included some hefty swigging of red wine. As stans of Stan (sorry, not sorry) realize, the I, Tonya villain portrayed Carter Baizen for three seasons (full of soapy shenanigans) of the show. He did not appear in this episode, as he notes in the video (“I wasn’t in the pilot — but I wish I was”), but he still enjoyed admiring his co-stars, especially The Boys‘ Chace Crawford, who played Nate Archibald.

“Yes! Chace! I always wanted to have that hair,” he exclaimed in a video that he captioned, “It was the best of times and it was the best of times. Xoxo, Gossip Girl. Premiere 09/19/2007.”

All The Best New Pop Music From This Week

This week’s best new pop music saw some big-name collaborations and buoyant singles. Justin Bieber teamed up with Chance The Rapper for a pious single, Cardi B rapped in Spanish on a track with Anitta, and Ali Gatie shared a lovelorn single with Alessia Cara.

Each week, Uproxx rounds up the best new pop music. Listen up.

Justin Bieber — “Holy” Feat. Chance The Rapper

Justin Bieber is well on his way to breaking out of his boyish pop star days. With his recent album Changes, Bieber aimed to pivot to a more R&B sound. With this week’s Chance The Rapper collaboration, “Holy,” Bieber refines his soaring melodies.

Anitta — “Me Gusta” Feat. Cardi B, Myke Towers

Brazilian pop singer Anitta tapped superstar Cardi B for the fiery track “Me Gusta.” Over a rhythmic beat, Cardi and Anitta flaunt their worth as they detail what they find attractive in men and deliver lyrics about being “bad b*tches.”

Ali Gatie — “Welcome Back” Feat. Alessia Cara

Though he only has one EP under his belt, Ali Gatie has already garnered a huge fanbase and boasts more than three billion streams. For his latest track, Gatie teams up with fellow Canadian star Alessia Cara to find hope even in heartbreak.

Ava Max — “Naked”

Though Ava Max has been in the music scene for years and already gained a cult following for her expansive, Lady Gaga-adjacent pop, the singer had yet to release her debut album — until now. Ava’s Heaven & Hell has finally arrived, and with it comes the earnest track “Naked.” Over a shimmering beat, the singer sings of keeping her guard up in relationships, only opening up to those she knows won’t break her heart.

Cautious Clay — “Agreeable”

Cautious Clay has been making music independently for just about four years and while he’s remained relatively under the radar, his work has caught the attention of many. His songs were featured in films like Booksmart and HBO’s Insecure. Taylor Swift even caught wind of one of his tracks and used it as a sample in her Lover song “London Boy.” Continuing on the heels of his breakout, Clay shares “Agreeable” as a downtrodden track.

Gus Dapperton — “Bluebird”

Gus Dapperton shared his long-awaited sophomore record Orca this week, debuting a video to the track “Bluebird” alongside the record’s release. The song itself stands as a laid-back preview to the entirety of Dapperton’s vulnerable record.

LANY — “Cowboy In LA”

LA group LANY are gearing up for the release of their record Mama’s Boy. Just a few weeks away, the band are giving another preview of their effort with the slow-burning number “Cowboy In LA,” detailing a heartfelt day with a crush.

Alec Wigdahl — “The Word”

Though Alec Wigdahl grew up without a “tight knit sense of belonging,” he shortly found his calling with music. Wigdahl has proven a knack for buoyant beats with his recent singles “Lipstick” and “Summer Is Over.” Now, Wigdahl expands his catalog with the sunny, feel-good tune “The Word.”

Phil Good — “Falling”

Phil Good infuses an upbeat nature into his breakup track “Falling.” Layering scaling guitar over intricate percussion, Good seeks to come up with an explanation to what went wrong in the relationship, all while keeping a positive outlook.

Deryk — “Goodtimes”

Deryk arrived on the scene earlier this summer with the indelible number “Call You Out” and now, the New Zealand-based singer returns with the track “Goodtimes.” In a statement, Deryk said: “‘Goodtimes’ is about not being able to reminisce or enjoy looking back on a time period in your life because it turned out to be a complete waste of time. It’s like Good Times, except the tainted, bitter version.

Jae Crowder Can Be An Unlikely Difference Maker In The Eastern Conference Finals

Jae Crowder isn’t on the short list of the most prominent players involved in the Eastern Conference Finals. Even in a series against one of his former teams in the Boston Celtics, Crowder is a role player, albeit a valuable one, and there is only so much oxygen in a series that features Jimmy Butler, Jayson Tatum, Bam Adebayo, Kemba Walker, Goran Dragic, Jaylen Brown and Gordon Hayward, among others. With that said, Crowder’s contributions are exceptionally valuable to the Miami Heat and, in looking back in the not-too-distant past, it isn’t clear that he was always supposed to be a key cog for his new team.

When the Heat acquired Crowder in early February, he arrived alongside Andre Iguodala in a multi-player swap that saw Memphis take on Justise Winslow’s long-term money and Miami ink Iguodala to a lucrative extension. In the moment, the focus was largely on Iguodala, with his exit from Memphis as the top story, even before he earned some extra security via the extension. In fact, Crowder was largely viewed as a throw-in, even with most acknowledging that he could have value as a supporting player on a $7.8 million expiring contract.

Fast-forward to the playoffs, though, and it is Crowder, not Iguodala, that has been the centerpiece of the deal through the prism of 2020. In the 108 minutes with Crowder on the floor against the Celtics, the Heat boast a +7.8 net rating, while Miami falls off a cliff to the tune of a -18.9 net rating in the 41 minutes with Crowder on the bench. There is, of course, some small sample size theater to go along with the noise of individual net rating involved in those numbers, but Crowder is unquestionably a prominent part of Miami’s rotation, starting each of the team’s 12 playoff games and averaging more than 34 minutes per game in the last two series combined.

Iguodala has faded into the background amid whispers of injury issues but, in some respects, Crowder is more prominent than ever. The Celtics, who know his game well from a multi-year stint in Boston, are game-planning away from Crowder and, frankly, they are likely right to do so.

Miami deploys lineups that are sometimes overflowing with quality offensive options, especially when Crowder is playing the 4 next to Adebayo and a trio of high-powered perimeter options including Dragic, Butler, Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson. As such, the Celtics are often “letting” Crowder beat them from three-point distance and, in Game 3, the 30-year-old forward wasn’t able to make Boston pay.

Crowder converted only 2-of-10 attempts from three-point range in that contest, perhaps experiencing some regression from a scalding hot playoff run. After a 29.3 percent three-point clip for Memphis in 45 games this season, Crowder knocked down 44.5 percent of his threes (on 6.4 attempts per game) for Miami down the stretch of the regular season and leading into the Orlando bubble. In the playoffs, Crowder has continued his marksmanship, converting 38.5 percent of his three-point attempts (even including the shaky shooting in Game 3) and his volume has increased to 8.7 attempts per game in the postseason.

Finding the baseline with Crowder’s shooting is a tough exercise, simply because he has experienced some lofty highs and some maddening lows with his three-point efficiency in the past. In his first four NBA seasons, Crowder shot only 32.4 percent from three-point range on relatively low volume. From there, he experienced a career renaissance in 2016-17, burying 39.8 percent of his threes for Boston and earning the reputation as one of the best bargains in the NBA on a (very) reasonable contract. Once he left the Celtics, though, Crowder cratered in Cleveland and Utah, shooting just 32.8 percent in the next 160 regular season games, and those hiccups continued in Memphis.

The NBA Playoffs are, by their nature, a small sample size endeavor and, at the moment, Crowder is playing with the confidence to let it fly. That bodes well for the Heat, especially when he converts open opportunities, because Boston is likely to continue scheming away from Crowder and he must continue to fire away. In fact, the Celtics have been putting Kemba Walker and other sub-optimal defenders on Crowder, leading to some rumblings that the Heat could have adjustments in the offing to take advantage.

While changes could be coming, the Celtics are essentially betting against Crowder’s shooting, while the Heat need him to convert. That isn’t the only pivot point in a series full of stars, but Crowder’s defensive contributions are well-documented in that he is switchable, physical and competitive in a number of match-ups. He can be a highly valuable player even with just average (or even below-average) shooting but, in the crucible of the playoffs, Crowder’s shooting could play a significant role in determining the winner of a series that is now back to toss-up territory after Boston’s Game 3 win.
