Basketball Fans Melted Down After Anthony Edwards Bodied Yuta Watanabe With The Most Violent Dunk Of The Season

As a No. 1 NBA Draft pick, there’s a lot of expectations attached. Fortunately for Anthony Edwards, he’s entered the league in a relatively low-stakes situation with a Timberwolves team that seems to be a perpetual state of flux. But on Friday night, Edwards reminded us all why he’s garnered so much attention.

During the fourth quarter of Minnesota’s game against the Raptors, Edwards caught the ball on the baseline, and after finding a clear lane to the basket, attacked the rim with the type of fury you rarely see from a player his age. The victim was poor Yuta Watanabe, who ended up on the receiving end of what is easily the nastiest poster dunk of the year so far.

I mean, just look at this.

And if that image is almost too much for your brain to process, you’re not alone. Unsurprisingly, basketball fans on Twitter lost their minds in the aftermath of Edwards’ jam, joining the collective disbelief about what will surely go down as, not just one of the best highlights of the season, but one of the greatest highlights of his career when all is said and done.

Here is a brief roundup of some of the best reactions thus far.

As always, Watanabe deserves credit for the attempt. It was a decision that will likely haunt him for the rest of his career, but a player in his position has to give maximum effort on every possession to earn playing time, and sometimes, that’s quite simply going to end badly.

Brandy And Monica Teamed Up To Recreate Their Iconic ‘The Boy Is Mine’ Exchange 23 Years Later

Back in August, legendary R&B singers Brandy and Monica put their differences aside to go head-to-head with their hits in an edition of Verzuz. The battle broke records by having over a million viewers tuning in live, and Kamala Harris even made a quick appearance ahead of the performance. Now, the two have reunited once again to fuel their listeners’ nostalgia by recreating a part of their hit song “The Boy Is Mine.”

More than 23 years after Brandy and Monica first released the song, the two joined on screen for a TikTok. Each singer lip synced their lyrics over the part of “The Boy Is Mine” where the two debate who “the boy” actually belongs to. “Excuse me, can I please talk to you for a minute?” Brandy asks.

@brandy

#duet with @mondeenise love you Mo♥ This was fun. #theboyismine @syraismith got me together.

The duo did not say what inspired them to recreate the song so many years later, but it could have been sparked by a recent Jeopardy! question that referenced “The Boy Is Mine.”

In other Brandy news, the singer announced earlier this month that 1997 live action Cinderella remake is officially available to stream on Disney+. The film was originally made for TV and starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother. At the time of its release, the musical was viewed by more than 60 million and ended up earning seven Emmy nominations.

Joel Embiid Set A New Career-High With 50 Points Against The Bulls

Joel Embiid has been playing like a man possessed this season. Following yet another disappointing postseason exit in Orlando, there were plenty of questions surrounding the Sixers and whether the Embiid-Ben Simmons partnership was a viable long-term plan for Philadelphia.

Right up until the point James Harden landed in Brooklyn, there were rumors that new GM Daryl Morey had tried to include Simmons in a potential trade package, adding even more questions to the equation. But through it all, Embiid has played the best basketball of his career.

And he added to resume on Friday night, as he led the Sixers to a 112-105 victory over the Bulls, and set a new career-high in the process, finishing with 50 points, to go along with 17 rebounds, five assists, and four blocks. And he put the game away in dramatic fashion, knocking down a tough step-back jump shot to seal the win.

And they needed every bit of it to finish off a feisty Chicago team, led by Zach LaVine, who despite going just 9-of-28 from the field for the night, finished with 30 points and made several big buckets down the stretch that nearly helped the Bulls steal the win.

Jamal Murray Dropped A Regular-Season Career-High 50 Points In A Win Over The Cavs

Jamal Murray was one of the breakout players of the Orlando Bubble. In the opening round of the playoffs against the Utah Jazz, Murray scored 50 points on two separate occasions as he went head-to-head against Donovan Mitchell in one of the most exciting series of the postseason.

He helped the Nuggets overcome two straight 3-1 deficits, first against the Jazz, then later against the Clippers, against whom he ignited for 40 points in the deciding Game 7 victory that punched their ticket to the Western Conference Finals. His superstar bona fides were all but sealed.

This season has been a little more up and down than expected for Murray, given the expectations set by his play in Orlando, but on Friday night, Murray looked every bit like the unstoppable force we saw in Orlando as he set a new regular-season career high with 50 points in a 120-103 win over the Cavs.

And he did it in dramatic fashion as he took the ball the length of the court for the tomahawk jam to put the exclamation point on that feat.

Murray went 21-of-25 on the night and made eight out of his 10 three-point attempts, the last of which set his new regular-season career-high of 48 before the jam put him at 50.

Earlier in the fourth, Murray knocked down three straight threes during one sequence to help the Nuggets build a lead that they would never relinquish.

Murray’s inconsistent play up to this point of the season has put him on the outside looking in for the All-Star Game, especially with all the other worthy candidates who have made strong cases for their first All-Star berths, but maybe it’s just the inspiration he needs to elevate his play back to those electrifying performances we saw in Orlando.

Metallica’s Twitch Concert Audio Was Apparently Replaced With 8-Bit Music To Avoid Copyright Issues

Metallica played a concert to kick off BlizzCon on Twitch, but apparently not everyone got to actually hear the music they were playing at the online event. The first day of the annual Blizzard event streamed on Twitch on Friday night, and with it came a special performance by Metallica. But the actual audio that played on some channels got caught up in one of the music issues that often plagues streaming content.

On Friday, Twitter lit up with videos from the performance where, instead of Metallica classics, nondescript 8-bit music seemed to be playing instead.

And it wasn’t a dub; multiple people shared clips of varying length where Metallica is clearly on the Twitch channel but some other music is playing. Though that moment spread online like wildfire, it apparently wasn’t what happened on the main Blizzard Twitch page. Rather, it was the front page of Twitch Gaming which had to replace the music.

Still, it’s an interesting bit of irony at the complicated state of Twitch and the music copyright issues that often plague the platform. And as many people pointed out, DCMA takedowns are an issue in internet content creation that came directly from Metallica’s decades-old fight with Napster that set the tone for music copyrights.

No one seemed to have any sympathy for Metallica here, mostly because they’ve dealt with these sorts of issues in the past. Anyone who has streamed a video game that has original music in it has likely encountered takedown or muting issues, and game makers have had to introduce music elimination options to help streamers prevent their content from getting taken down.

It’s unlikely the moment will change much of anything, but it certainly felt like things came full circle on Friday night.

Alex Trebek’s ‘Jeopardy!’ Suits Were Donated To A Charity For Formerly Homeless And Incarcerated Men

Alex Trebek’s legacy will remain an enormous part of the Jeopardy! universe long after the show picks a full-time replacement host. And now we know that the wardrobe he wore on camera will have a much bigger and immediate impact on many more people.

Earlier in the month word broke that Trebek’s family intended to donate Trebek’s substantial Jeopardy! wardrobe, and on Thursday the New York Times reported that they had done exactly just that. The collection of clothes, starting with 14 suits, 58 dress shirts, 300 neckties, will go to the Doe Fund, a charity that helps formerly homeless and incarcerated men in New York.

So it was that Mr. Trebek’s “Jeopardy!” wardrobe — which also included 25 polo shirts, 14 sweaters, 9 sport coats, 9 pairs of dress shoes, 15 belts, 2 parkas, and 3 pairs of dress slacks — arrived about two weeks ago at the Doe Fund, a New York City nonprofit that provides services, housing and job opportunities to men who have been in prison or homeless.

“The Doe Fund made perfect sense since these are guys who are going on job interviews and need second chances,” said Matthew Trebek, 30, a New York restaurateur who co-owns Lucille’s and Oso, both in Harlem. “It would be an honor to the type of work that my Dad did throughout his life.”

The story has some great details about the charity and the process of finding it after the death of Trebek, who passed away in late 2020 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. The Doe Fund certainly fits into Trebek’s hopes of building a better, more forgiving world, and everyone receiving Trebek’s suits seems to really appreciate that they were part of TV history.

Taylor Swift Says Her ‘Gasoline’ Remix Officially Makes Her The Fourth Haim Sister

The Haim sisters released their third studio album Women In Music Pt. III back in June. Veteran educator shares a refreshing perspective on what kids need from school now

Public education is one of the most complex issues under normal circumstances, but the pandemic has made it far more complicated. The question of how to meet the needs of kids who come from diverse families, communities, and socioeconomic circumstances—not to mention having diverse mental strengths, interests, and challenges of their own—is never simple, and adding the difficulty of living through a pandemic with its lack of certainty, structure, and security is a whole freaking lot.

Kids’ individual experiences during the pandemic have varied greatly. While the overall situation has been hard for everyone, some kids have actually thrived at home, away from the rigid schedules and social quagmire of traditional school. Other kids have floundered without the routine and personal interaction, while still others are stuck in terrible home situations or have needs that can’t be met by parents alone. Some kids are being greatly harmed by missing school.

Educators, politicians, public health officials, and parents have gone around and around for the past year trying to figure out what smart, what’s safe, what’s necessary, and what’s not for kids during COVID-19. Many of us are worried about the mental health and educational struggles children are facing. There are no easy answers. There is no one-size-fits-all solution.

However, there is an attitude that we can take that will serve all our children as more kids move back to the classroom. A 40-year veteran of our education system, former New York teacher and administrator Therea Thayer Snyder, wrote a letter on Facebook that has resonated with teachers and parents alike. In it, she describes what our kids have experienced during the pandemic, how academic standards and measures no longer apply, and what schools can do to help kids process what they’ve been through. It reads:

“Dear Friends and Colleagues:

I am writing today about the children of this pandemic. After a lifetime of working among the young, I feel compelled to address the concerns that are being expressed by so many of my peers about the deficits the children will demonstrate when they finally return to school. My goodness, what a disconcerting thing to be concerned about in the face of a pandemic which is affecting millions of people around the country and the world. It speaks to one of my biggest fears for the children when they return. In our determination to “catch them up,” I fear that we will lose who they are and what they have learned during this unprecedented era.

What on earth are we trying to catch them up on? The models no longer apply, the benchmarks are no longer valid, the trend analyses have been interrupted. We must not forget that those arbitrary measures were established by people, not ordained by God. We can make those invalid measures as obsolete as a crank up telephone! They simply do not apply.

When the children return to school, they will have returned with a new history that we will need to help them identify and make sense of. When the children return to school, we will need to listen to them. Let their stories be told. They have endured a year that has no parallel in modern times. There is no assessment that applies to who they are or what they have learned. Remember, their brains did not go into hibernation during this year. Their brains may not have been focused on traditional school material, but they did not stop either. Their brains may have been focused on where their next meal is coming from, or how to care for a younger sibling, or how to deal with missing grandma, or how it feels to have to surrender a beloved pet, or how to deal with death. Our job is to welcome them back and help them write that history.

I sincerely plead with my colleagues, to surrender the artificial constructs that measure achievement and greet the children where they are, not where we think they “should be.” Greet them with art supplies and writing materials, and music and dance and so many other avenues to help them express what has happened to them in their lives during this horrific year. Greet them with stories and books that will help them make sense of an upside-down world. They missed you. They did not miss the test prep. They did not miss the worksheets. They did not miss the reading groups. They did not miss the homework. They missed you.

Resist the pressure from whatever ‘powers that be’ who are in a hurry to “fix” kids and make up for the “lost” time. The time was not lost, it was invested in surviving an historic period of time in their lives—in our lives. The children do not need to be fixed. They are not broken. They need to be heard. They need to be given as many tools as we can provide to nurture resilience and help them adjust to a post-pandemic world.

Being a teacher is an essential connection between what is and what can be. Please, let what can be demonstrate that our children have so much to share about the world they live in and in helping them make sense of what, for all of us has been unimaginable. This will help them– and us–achieve a lot more than can be measured by any assessment tool ever devised.

Peace to all who work with the children!”

It’s always been true—but especially vital to remember now—that kids are human beings first. They are not receptacles we’re shoveling knowledge into, they’re not machines designed to churn out perfect test scores, and they’re not robots who can be expected to return to an assembly line of learning after this past year. Millions of our kids will have lost a loved one to COVID-19 while millions of others are being told it’s all fake numbers. Millions of kids will are coming back to school from homes where parents have lost jobs, where food has been scarce, where insecurity has taken hold. Millions of kids are dealing with anxiety and depression, some of which they already had pre-pandemic and some of which has come on in the past year.

As parents and teachers, our job is not to make sure kids “catch up” to arbitrary standards that barely made sense before the upheaval of the past year. Our job is to nurture these growing, changing human beings as best we can, to help them build the resilience to move forward and learn from what the whole world has experienced. Learning happens in a million ways, and many of the lessons of this past year are just as valuable as any lesson they’d learn in a classroom.

Kids need us to understand that and to honor them right where they are.

Michelle Pfeiffer’s ‘Batman Returns’ Whip Stunt From Nearly Three Decades Ago Went Viral On Twitter

One of the many wrinkles to life online these days is trying to reverse engineer whatever is trending on Twitter for one reason or another. Sometimes that’s easier to do than others, like when it’s simply a matter of figuring out what new way people are dunking on Ted Cruz. Other times, like when “we live in a society” trends, for example, you might need to know some Joker meme lore or have an affinity for the DC Universe to grasp what’s happening.

When someone’s name trends, though, there’s always a worry that they have died. Which is why when Michelle Pfeiffer started trending on Friday, some people got worried. But the matter was actually sort of a celebration of her past work, notably in Batman Returns. On Friday, behind-the-scenes footage of Pheiffer filming the 1992 film made the rounds, particularly a clip where she, as Catwoman, shows off her whip skills.

According to the footage, Pfeiffer actually pulls off a fairly impressive scene in a single take, whipping the heads off of three mannequins and then using the whip like a jump rope before taking a bow while the crew applauds her for the perfect take. Two different tweets with this footage went viral on Friday, with a lot of reactions to the clip that some were seeing for the first time.

It’s certainly an impressive moment, to say the least. But it also illustrates just how hard it is to keep track of things online these days. The trending topic wasn’t about anything new, but people reliving something that happened nearly three decades ago. Which doesn’t make it news as much as a reboot of something a lot of people may have had some nostalgia for.
