Matthew McConaughey Has Launched His Own YouTube Channel To Share His Life Philosophies: ‘Alright, Alright, Alright’

Matthew McConaughey recently declared that he was claiming to be considering a political race (specifically to unseat Texas Governor Greg Abbott after multiple controversies, including the state’s power catastrophe and pandemic response). The Wolf Of Wall Street actor has definitely been getting political lately, including how he scolded Hollywood “liberals” while talking with Russell Brand, but there’s no telling if McConaughey plans on keeping that tone going in his latest endeavor: his very own YouTube channel, where he’ll share his tricks and trades on how (in the words of his foundation‘s actual name) to “Just Keep Livin.”

The Oscar winner kept the vibe closer to what people usually expect from him with his announcement, which begins with his obligatory quote from Dazed and Confused: “Alright, alright, alright.”

The channel, as McConaughey describes it, will be “a destination where I’m going to share who I am, who I’m not, what I believe in, what I don’t, what I’m doing, what I’m not doing, along with some approaches to life that I’ve found useful and constructive along the way.” In the end, viewers should expect “prescriptions in the art of living” that the actor says he’s used to “navigate this rodeo we all live in.” It’s McConaughey’s rodeo, and we’re all just living in it. Well, he wasn’t done yet.

“Hopefully, it’s gonna be all killa, no filla!” he exclaimed in his laid-back way. “With some raps and rhymes that can help you get back on time, put a little reason to your rhyme. Some food for thought, with a sip of wine.” The little whistle he does before saying, “Wine”? That’s pretty killa, so get down with monitoring this channel.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day With These Dry Irish Stouts

It’s no secret that St. Patrick’s Day is going to look quite a bit different this year. Last year, the last-minute cancellation of St. Paddy’s celebrations around the country marked the moment most of us realized that the pandemic was a big deal. Covid put an end to our dreams of drinking green beer, shooting Irish whiskey, and savoring stouts at our favorite local pubs.

This year, we’re prepared (and an increasing number of us are vaccinated). We know there won’t be any parades and day-long celebrations at local bars (yet), but we can all still enjoy our favorite Irish food and drink from the comfort of our own homes. And a perennial all-star among these is the classic dry Irish stout.

For the uninitiated, a dry Irish stout is a dark beer that’s often almost black in appearance. It’s known for its dry, malty flavor profile that comes from the use of roasted barley in the brewing process. Generally speaking, the style is also typified by its creamy mouthfeel, subtle coffee notes, and bitter finish.

The most well-known dry Irish stout is Guinness, but there are scores of brewers out there giving the legendary “black stuff” a run for its money. Some hail from Ireland and others merely emulate the traditional Irish brewing techniques. Below you’ll find ten of our favorite bottles and cans — from Ireland and the US — to enjoy on March 17th, 2021.

Guinness Stout

Guinness

ABV: 4.2%

Average Price: $7.99 for a 4-pack of 16-ounce cans

The Beer:

When it comes to St. Patrick’s Day beers, there’s no beating Guinness. This classic, dry Irish stout has been made the same way since 1759. It’s high in rich, malty flavor, but surprisingly low in calories.

Tasting Notes:

Take a moment to breathe in the aromas of bitter coffee, dark chocolate, and roasted malts. The flavor is exactly like the aroma, highlighted by hints of espresso beans, rich, creamy chocolate, roasted malt flavor. A nice, dry, bitter finish leaves you ready for another sip. And another.

Bottom Line:

It wouldn’t be St. Patrick’s Day without a few pints of Guinness. It pairs perfectly with Irish music and corned beef.

Schlafly Irish-Style Extra Stout

Schlafly

ABV: 8%

Average Price: $13.99 for a six-pack

The Beer:

Normally, Irish stouts are low in alcohol. But this Americanized extra stout from St. Louis’ Schlafly changes that idea up in a big way. Reminiscent of 18th-century Irish stouts, Schlafly Irish-Style Extra Stout is made with roasted barley, Dark Crystal malted barley, and East Kent Goldings hops.

Tasting Notes:

On the nose, you’ll find strong aromas of chocolate, coffee, and subtle smoke. On the palate, you’ll taste flavors of molasses, raisins, toffee, coffee. It all wraps up in a subtle, creamy, bitter hop finish.

Bottom Line:

Schlafly is the kind of brewery that makes a beer for every occasion. The Irish-Style Extra stout, with its potent 8% ABV, is one of the brand’s best.

Beamish Irish Stout

Beamish

ABV: 4.1%

Average Price: $8 for a 4-pack of 16-ounce cans

The Beer:

If you ever visit Cork, Ireland, you might get pressured to try a Beamish before you order your first Guiness. Brewed since 1792, Beamish is known for its coffee, dark chocolate, and features a sweeter flavor than its counterpart, Guinness.

Tasting Notes:

Take a moment to give this beer a proper nosing and you’ll find scents of vanilla cookies, milk chocolate, and a roasted coffee. The sip is filled with notes of roasted espresso beans and sweet toffee. The finish is a highlight — powered by a subtle spicy rye note.

Bottom Line:

If you’ve tried Guinness, you definitely should try Beamish too. The people of Cork demand it.

Breckenridge Nitro Dry Irish Stout

Breckenridge

ABV: 4.8%

Average Price: $15.99 for a 12-pack

The Beer:

When it comes to American, Irish-style stouts, nitro is the name of the game. One of the best nitro Irish stouts is from Colorado’s Breckenridge. But this isn’t your average American remake, it’s actually made in collaboration with Belfast’s Boundary Brewing Cooperative.

Tasting Notes:

On the nose, you’ll find strong coffee and roasted barley flavors. The palate is full of sweet caramel, creamy vanilla, and espresso beans. It all ends in a subtly hoppy, malty, dry finish.

Bottom Line:

A grat example of an American craft riff on a traditional Irish style.

Rhinegeist Nitro Luck

Rhinegeist

ABV: 4.8%

Average Price: $9.99 for a 4-pack of 16-ounce cans

The Beer:

Made with Maris Otter and chocolate malts, along with roasted barley, and oats, plus Magnum and Crystal hops, this creamy, velvety stout is filled with bold, rich flavors that are well-suited for late winter drinking.

Tasting Notes:

The nose is ripe with dried fruits, buttery caramel, and dark, bitter chocolate. The palate is loaded with notes of dark roast coffee, roasted malts, and sticky toffee. The finish is mellow and dry.

Bottom Line:

Rhinegeist has made a name for itself in the last few years. Its take on traditional Irish stout is a great respite from the usual pints.

O’Hara’s Irish Stout

O

ABV: 4.3%

Average Price: $7.99 for a 4-pack of 12-ounce bottles

The Beer:

O’Hara’s is yet another brand that proves there’s a lot more to Irish stouts than Guinness. The Carlow, Ireland-based brand’s Irish stout has only been brewed since 1999, but it’s garnered praise and numerous awards over the past two decades.

Tasting Notes:

Take a whiff of this brew and your nostrils will fill with the aromas of freshly brewed coffee, toffee, and dark chocolate. On the sip you’ll be greeted with flavors of toasted vanilla beans, espresso beans, chocolate bark, anise, and a subtle, dry, roasted finish.

Bottom Line:

O’Hara’s is where classic and contemporary meet in the Irish stout world. It stays true to the classic flavors while appealing to modern palates as well.

Murphy’s Irish Stout

Murphy

ABV: 4%

Average Price: $17.99 for a ten-pack

The Beer:

Another classic, Irish stout, Murphy’s is simple and straightforward in its recipe and flavor. Made with water, malted barley, un-malted barley, hop extract, and made creamy and mellow with the addition of nitrogen, Murphy’s doesn’t need to add anything special or flashy.

It’s perfect just the way it is.

Tasting Notes:

The nose is filled with hints of coffee, caramel, and a nutty sweetness. Unlike many Irish stouts, this creamy, sweet, vanilla, toffee, almond cookie, and fresh brewed espresso-flavored beer has little-to-no bitter taste.

Bottom Line:

If you don’t enjoy the lingering bitterness of some of the more well-known Irish stouts, this is a great beer for you.

Yards Love Stout

Yards

ABV: 5.5%

Average Price: $10 for a six-pack

The Beer:

This nitro stout was brewed with Chocolate, Crystal, and Black malts as well as roasted barley and toasted wheat. It’s all tied together with creamy nitrogen. The result is a highly drinkable, sweet, rich, American-style Irish stout perfect for winter imbibing.

Tasting Notes:

On the nose, you’ll find fragrant aromas of roasted coffee beans, biscuit cookies, and molasses. On the palate, you’ll get notes of milk chocolate, creamy vanilla, espresso, and cereal. It all ends in a warming, subtly bitter finish.

Bottom Line:

This is a very well-rounded stout. It’s the perfect mix of bitter and sweet and is a great accompaniment to open-faced corned beef sandwiches.

North Coast Old No. 38

North Coast

ABV: 5.4%

Average Price: $12 for a six-pack

The Beer:

This pitch-black beer is labeled as a “Dublin Dry Stout.” It was named for a retired California Western Railroad steam engine that chugged along between Fort Bragg and Willits, California.

Tasting Notes:

Take a moment to breathe in the aromas of roasted malts, caramel, vanilla, and a slight bitterness before taking a sip. The palate is filled with the flavors of toasted barley, sweet treacle, and espresso. The finish is slightly bitter and luxuriously silky.

Bottom Line:

A great pick for stout lovers who want to compare an American brew with the Irish standards.

Harpoon Irish Stout

Harpoon

ABV: 4.3%

Average Price: Currently draught only

The Beer:

This sessionable dry Irish-style stout is brewed with 2 Row Pale, Caramel, Roasted Barley, Midnight Wheat, Chocolate, and Flaked Barley malts, as well as Apollo and Willamette hops. It’s well-balanced, highly drinkable, and gets a nice creamy mouthfeel from the addition of nitrogen.

Tasting Notes:

The nose is filled with that symphony of roasted malts as well as rich chocolate and sweet vanilla beans. The sip features creamy toffee, bitter coffee, and nutty sweetness. A slightly bitter, hoppy finish closes things out in a way that feels unexpected for the style.

Bottom Line:

Harpoon is located in the heart of Boston so it should come as no surprise that its Irish stout is robust and rich enough to grapple with a March chill.

Japanese Breakfast Finally Got To Perform The Song ‘Jimmy Fallon Big!’ On ‘The Tonight Show’

Perhaps the most standout song title on the 2017 Japanese Breakfast album Soft Sounds From Another Planet is “Jimmy Fallon Big!.” Now, four years later, Michelle Zauner has finally performed on Fallon’s Tonight Show, and naturally, she played that song.

In 2017, Zauner told NPR about the song, “I wrote this song about the bass player of Little Big League. He’d been offered a better touring gig and so he sat me down at my kitchen table and told me he had to quit the band because this other band were going to be ‘Jimmy Fallon big.’ At the time it felt like losing a brother, and there was this shame, feeling like I was never going to get there myself. Funny enough, he now plays bass in Japanese Breakfast! Now we just need to play Jimmy Fallon and the cycle will be complete!”

Fallon briefly recounted that story on the show and revealed that while Zauner was there to perform her recent Jubilee single “Be Sweet,” a rendition of “Jimmy Fallon Big!” would be filmed as a web-exclusive video.

Naturally, Zauner was excited about the whole thing. In response to a tweet from Fallon, she wrote, “AHHH! Thanks for having us! Feeling Jimmy Fallon Big af!!!” She also responded to the video of Fallon’s explanation about the song, “Wtf is going on [head exploding emojis].”

Jubilee is out 6/4 via Dead Oceans. Pre-order it here.

Tucker Carlson Is So Worried That ‘WAP’ Will ‘Hurt Our Children’ That He Played Nearly The Entire Grammys Performance

Instead of responding to John Oliver calling him a “performatively outraged wedge salad,” Tucker Carlson returned to one of his favorite subjects during Monday’s episode of Tucker Carlson Tonight: “WAP” (it does not stand for “white angry pundit”). He’s just concerned for the children! Carlson first covered the Billboard-topping Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion single back in August, calling it “garbage” and “crap,” but he railed against it again following the Grammys. This time, he tied it back to “cancel culture.”

After showing a clip from the Grammys performance, Carlson sneered, “No more Dumbo. It’s too filthy. We get that instead.” (I’m not sure the issue with Dumbo is that it’s “filthy”…) After bring in Candace Owens, he added, “It is hard not to conclude that they are actively trying to degrade our culture and hurt our children.” Owens, who has a history with Cardi B, agreed with Carlson, calling “what we were looking at last night… a lesbian sex scene being simulated on television, and this is considered feminist.”

“I agree with you 100 percent in the assessment that this feels more sinister. This is starting to me to seem like it’s not even left or right, it’s not a political issue. This seems like an attack on American values, American traditions, and you’re actually actively trying to make children aspire to things that are grotesque,” Owens said, adding: “We are celebrating perversity in America.”

The best part of the segment, outside of Owens’ faux outage over Mr. Potato Head, is that despite the conservative commenters calling “WAP” the “destruction of American values,” footage from Cardi and Megan’s performance played over and over again. It’s objectively very funny to see Carlson’s befuddled face next to this:

Carlson summed up his thesis with: “Totally degrading. And the same people who make it will lecture you about ‘you hate women’ or something. Who hates women, really?” You can watch the segment here.

Drake Offers Major Praise For Bow Wow: ‘If It Wasn’t For You, There Wouldn’t Be No Me’

It was revealed yesterday that Drake has done something that no other artist before him ever has: He had three songs — “What’s Next,” “Wants And Needs” featuring Lil Baby, and “Lemon Pepper Freestyle” with Rick Ross, aka the entirety of the Scary Hours 2 EP — simultaneously debut in the top three spots of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. That’s cause for celebration and Drake did so by shouting out another rapper who he credits as a major inspiration: Bow Wow.

After receiving the news, Drake decided to have a “1 2 3” party, which had everything from 1-, 2-, and 3-shaped balloons to a cake that had the top 10 of the Hot 100 chart printed on it. He shared some videos of the shindig on his Instagram Stories, including a clip of him and Bow Wow playfully chatting with each other and the camera. In another clip, he said of Bow Wow, “I had to link with Wizzle. Everybody wants to have drinks and everybody wants to celebrate and turn up and, you know, I just had to see Wizzle. I had to see Wizzle in person. If it wasn’t for you, there wouldn’t be no me. That’s why I’mma rock with y’all forever.”

The Warriors Bench Erupted After Kyle Kuzma Airballed A Technical Free Throw

The first half of Monday night’s tilt between the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers didn’t go well for the home team in San Francisco. After a reasonably competitive opening quarter, the Warriors took a 15-point deficit to the locker room, allowing the Lakers to shoot 68.6 percent from the floor. To that end, it would be reasonable to expect some frustration for Golden State and, well, that did exist. However, there was a single moment of abject joy for the Warriors and Kyle Kuzma was responsible.

With 7:11 left in the second quarter, Warriors rookie big man James Wiseman was called for a technical foul, and Kuzma strolled to the free throw line for one shot. From there, things got weird, with Kuzma missing the attempt in jarringly ugly fashion and the Warriors bench erupting in hysterics.

Obviously, it is weird to see an NBA player miss a free throw as badly as Kuzma did here under any circumstances. On top of that, it is even more rare to see a technical foul free throw airballed, and it wasn’t as if it was simply a case of Kuzma pulling the string. It was just that far from the intended target.

The ugliness of the miss likely inspired Golden State’s reaction, but the players wasted no time. The broadcast was baffled as well, and of course, Draymond Green was pictured putting on a show on the bench with his personal celebration. This particular play likely won’t serve as a pivot point for the game itself, but it was certainly fun and weird, adding a brief moment of joy for the Warriors on an otherwise ugly night.

Conservatives Got Mocked After They Begged Gen X To Put A Stop To ‘Cancel Culture’

Conservative media is entering week three of frothing at the mouth over kiddie stuff. They’ve accused the left of “canceling” the Muppets, Dr. Seuss, Mr. Potato Head, Pepé Le Pew, even Peter Pan and Dumbo. In truth, all are doing just fine. You can still buy and/or watch all of the above. But right-wing commentators are still convinced — or trying to convince those who pay attention to them — that there’s some cultural purge afoot. And when some of them tried to reach out to a certain group for help, it did not go well.

It started with a column in The New York Post, by an op-ed editor for the Wall Street Journal, with the promising headline, “Cancel culture is out of control — and Gen X is our only hope.” He then reached out to people from his own generation to stop…companies from putting warnings over certain episodes (The Muppet Show, some old Disney classics), no longer publishing a small number of books (Seuss), or simply retiring a grabby cartoon skunk. (To say nothing of the non-troversy that was the Potato Head fracas.)

“We grew up in a country that didn’t ban books,” Hennessey wrote. “We all agreed that witch hunts and blacklists were bad. Censorship was an outrage. The 1980s were not that long ago. Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about.”

But Gen X by and large didn’t know what he was talking about, perhaps because so few of them read The New York Post. It was a screed filled with Tears for Fears references and lines like, “If Gen Xers want to spare our own kids having to live in the new East Germany these woke maniacs are trying to build, we can’t go on wearing our sunglasses at night.”

By Monday, when Fox News correspondent Gillian Turner amplified Hennessey’s message, calling on those born between 1965 and 1980 to stand up to those born between 1981 and 1996 — and not the companies that inspired this culture war kerfuffle in the first place — they got a firm answer: Nope.

Some reminded everyone that these were the people who invented canceling, when they called it “boycotts.”

Or other things.

Some thought it was more fun to sit this war between generations out.

And wouldn’t you know it? Eventually Ted Cruz got involved.

Of course, there’s another way for conservatives to put a stop to this: Simply stop fomenting nonsense culture wars.

Will Forte’s Latest TV Project Was Called ‘Wildly Irresponsible’ By A Mental Health Nonprofit

Will Forte’s latest project has seen some pushback from people critical of the show’s subject material. News came last week of a show called Expiration Date, about a man planning his own suicide — a premise one mental health organization criticized as “wildly irresponsible”

Called Expiration Date, it was described by news releases as a “dark suburban soap” starring Forte, whose character discovers his life insurance policy covers suicide if he doesn’t carry out the act 12 months after he plans it. The Peacock show is set to showcase Forte playing out that year — a grim premise that immediately saw backlash from mental health professionals, who were shocked by the show’s proposed handling of suicide.

As Variety reported on Monday, news of the show saw a response from Inseparable, an advocacy group that includes Robin Williams’ son on its advocacy board.

“What a wildly irresponsible and callous concept that will, no doubt, endanger countless viewers,” said Bill Smith, founder of Inseparable, in a statement. “Glamorizing suicide leads to contagion, that is a fact. At a time when our country is already suffering a mental health crisis compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has left Americans’ mental wellbeing at a two-decade low, the last thing we need is a reckless show hinged on the question of ‘will he or won’t he’ succumb to the devastation of depression — an all too real and painful experience for millions of Americans.”

Variety‘s report indicated that the maker of the show “understands” how sensitive the subject matter of the show is, and is working with experts on the plot. But Smith said “it almost doesn’t matter what’s in the script” because the mere premise of the show involves a man plotting his own death. It’s important to note that the show is merely in development and hasn’t been picked up by Peacock just yet. But it’s off to an inauspicious beginning, one that may prevent it from ever seeing the light of day.

Julius Randle Went After Scott Foster After A Botched Travel Call Cost The Knicks A Chance In Brooklyn

The New York Knicks almost completed an incredible comeback in Brooklyn on Monday night, as they clawed back from a 12-point deficit entering the fourth quarter against the Nets to make it a three-point game with the ball and just under six seconds to play.

They got to that point by playing what may very well be the best sequence of inbounds defense the league has seen in decades, as they forced two Nets timeouts and two jump balls on four consecutive Brooklyn inbound attempts to secure a shot at tying the game and forcing overtime. On that final play, Alec Burks inbounded the ball to Julius Randle, who had 33 points and 12 rebounds, including a few key buckets late during the Knicks rally.

Randle went up for a three after faking a handoff back to Burks, and Kyrie Irving reached a hand in and clearly got the ball as Randle went up. The All-Star forward came back down, dribbled, and tried to go back up, and Scott Foster, who as positioned behind Randle with an awkward angle, called a traveling violation on Randle.

What should have been a jump ball turned into the Nets ball, as New York had used its challenge to overturn a foul call when they got their last tie-up on Joe Harris the play prior. It was an unfortunate and anti-climactic ending to what had otherwise been a thrilling fourth quarter, and after the game Randle was hot and had to be pushed away from Foster by Obi Toppin and other teammates.

It was a clear missed call and Randle would have almost assuredly won a jump with Irving to give New York a chance at a bit of a scramble drill three to tie. You can tell how much this game meant to the Knicks, as they rose to the challenge against the Nets and to feel like their efforts late were thwarted not by great play from their opponents but a missed call makes it an extra bitter pill to swallow.
