Rory McIlroy Laughed After Hitting His Dad With A Shot At The Masters

The 2021 Masters returned to its normal April dates after the 2020 version was played in November, and with the return to springtime in Augusta brought the azaleas in full bloom, a firmer and faster (and harder) golf course, and a smattering of patrons back on the course. With just 5,000 folks in attendance, it wasn’t the typical masses of galleries we’re accustomed to seeing at Augusta National, and it also meant that there was a much better chance that someone in the gallery following a player was a friend or family member.

Rory McIlroy did not have his A-game on Thursday, as he sprayed it around the course, unable to get himself on track as he got as high as 4-over on the day. Among the holes in which he had issues with the most was the 7th hole, when he launched a tee shot well left of the fairway. Trying to hit a big hook back to the green, McIlroy hung his approach shot straight and struck a patron in the leg. However, this wasn’t just any patron, but his father, which drew a chuckle from Rory as he realized what he’d done.

In fairness, Rory did let out a hearty “FORE RIGHT” while the ball was in the air, but his dad was unable to spot the ball and dodge it. The father of the former No. 1 in the world likewise had a funny reaction to getting hit by a shot from his son, walking off the pain of taking a golf ball to the leg and joking he should’ve requested an autographed glove from Rory — the customary PGA player apology for hitting a fan.

Happily, the elder McIlroy was not injured seriously by his son’s wayward tee shot, and they will surely have a quite the conversation in the car ride home from the course after his round finishes.

The Great Ketchup Shortage Of 2021 Is (Apparently) Upon Us

You know those random packets of ketchup that have been chilling in your fridge (or in a bowl in a cabinet somewhere, with a bunch of other random items — red pepper flakes, fake Parmesan cheese, soy sauce packets, etc.) for years? Hold onto those babies with your life, because America has slipped itself straight into a ketchup shortage.

According to CNN Business, shortages of ketchup — specifically the type found in packets — emerged across the country over this past summer, after the CDC advised against dine-in services, which put restaurants in direct competition with fast food establishments, resulting in a stronger demand (and therefore, increased price) for to-go condiments. In an article from summer 2020, CNN Business reported that according to Dan Scott, the head of operations at FoodServiceDirect.com (an online food service provider that supplies restaurants and other places that sell food) single-serve condiment orders saw a spike around mid-March of last year, growing by 300% in comparison to the previous year.

And if you’ve ever eaten out (we know you have) you’ll know that unless told otherwise, every establishment coast to coast goes absolutely HAM with ketchup packets, supplying you with more than you can ever hope to eat in a single meal.

Luckily Heinz is attempting to step up to their game (your move Hunt’s), announcing a 25% increase in production just days ago in an attempt to produce 12 billion ketchup packets in a single year. Let that number sink in — 12 billion! Somewhere in the Heinz factory, someone is diving into a pool of all of these packets like Scrooge McDuck.

Those of us who wisely stocked up on ketchup at the start of the pandemic instead of toilet paper like all you other morons are laughing ourselves to sleep. Dreaming about ketchup.

Amy Adams Witnesses A Murder (Or Does She?) In Netflix’s ‘The Woman In The Window’ Trailer

The Woman in the Window was originally scheduled to be released in theaters in October 2019. Then it was delayed to May 2020. Then the pandemic happened, and the movie was pushed back again to May 2021 and pushed out of theaters. Netflix acquired the rights to director Joe Wright’s psychological thriller starring Amy Adams as an agoraphobic woman in — and I cannot stress this enough — the window who sees something horrifying in the house across the street. Or did she? We’ll finally find out on May 14 when The Woman in the Window premieres on the streaming service.

Watch the trailer above. Here’s the official plot synopsis:

In The Woman in the Window, a psychological suspense thriller directed by Joe Wright, an agoraphobic child psychologist befriends a neighbor across the street from her New York City brownstone, only to see her own life turned upside down when the woman disappears and she suspects foul play. A stellar ensemble cast brings Tracy Letts’ screenplay based on the gripping, best-selling novel to life, where shocking secrets are revealed, and no one — and nothing — is what it seems.

Written by Tracy Letts, The Woman in the Window also stars Gary Oldman, Anthony Mackie, Wyatt Russell, Brian Tyree Henry, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Geraldo Rivera Apologized For Asking A Black Fox News Guest About The Last Time He Was In ‘The Ghetto,’ Causing All Hell To Break Loose

Never accuse Geraldo Rivera of staying in one place for too long. The dude who gave away U.S.-in-Iraq troop coordinates on live TV is more often-than-not one of the more levelheaded talking heads on Fox News. Recently, he went toe-to-toe with Judge Jeanine Pirro after a racist tirade, in which she blamed immigrants for COVID. The former keeper of Al Capone’s vault also praised a Biden speech, but he was likely miffed by John Oliver’s recent resurrection of their feud (in which the Last Week Tonight host declared that Geraldo looks like “every single Batman Joker rolled into one”).

That had to sting and possibly with lasting effects (I kid, really), but that’s no excuse for Geraldo’s incendiary comment to a Black Fox News guest. During an episode of America’s Newsroom, Leo Terrell and Geraldo got into a sparring match while discussing St. Louis’ first African-American mayor, Tishaura Jones, and her plans for taking on the city’s crime while also tacking police reform. Geraldo’s position was that Jones is being “unrealistic” while executing the dual plan, although he was more optimistic than Terrell, who considers Jones’ approach to be hopeless. Terrell also took issue with Jones arguing to her former rival (Cara Spencer, who is white) that “white allies” do not share Black residents’ “experiences to lead a majority-minority city.” Terrell argued that this was an “insulting” and “racist” stance that he can’t abide by.

More yelling commenced, and that’s when Geraldo interrupted Terrell’s shouting to ask about the most recent time that he had visited “the ghetto.”

This led to more shouting with Terrell exclaiming, “How dare you say that!?” From there, no progress was obviously going to be made, but Geraldo did later post an apology on Twitter. “Apologize to @TheLeoTerrell did not mean to imply that he doesn’t get realities of urban life,” Rivera wrote. “Sorry Leo didn’t mean it personally. I wish St Louis’ new mayor the best. She has her hands full in a city beset by violent crime.

All The Best Plant-Based Fast-Food Burgers, Ranked

There are some solid reasons to eat plant-based burgers over their traditional meat counterparts. For one, you might not eat meat but don’t want to miss out on the delicious experience of savoring a good burger. Two, while plant-based “meats” (yes, we realize that’s a misnomer in itself) aren’t impeccable for the environment, they’re significantly better than livestock. And while the new generation of veggie burgers aren’t crazy good for you (their sodium levels can often exceed real meat), they’re… veggie-based. Therefore they can offer a lifelong meat-eater a gateway to more vegetable-driven eating decisions.

Or you maybe you’ve simply had your fill of bacon burgers and chicken sandwiches and feel eager to try something new. Travel your tastebuds and whatnot.

Whatever the case may be, if you’re in the (rapidly expanding) market for a plant-based fast-food burger, we’re here to help. We’ve gone on the hunt for the best of what’s out there and we’ve ranked them based on taste. Or, we should clarify, “taste for those who also enjoy meat.” If you’re not a meat-eater at all, your palate might not crave umami the same way the carnivores among us do.

Check our favorite plant-based fast-food burgers below!

8. A&W — Beyond Burger

A&W

Calories: 500

When I first bit into this burger, I actually said aloud: “This is the saddest burger I’ve ever eaten.”

If you’ve never had a plant-based burger, don’t let A&W’s be your introduction. It’s about as boring as it gets. This sandwich is served with your standard lettuce, tomato, and red onion, with pickle chips and A&W’s Papa Sauce smeared on the bun. That can be a winning combo, but in this case, the final product is incredibly bland.

The Bottom Line

Somehow worse than a thing Burger King made, which is something.

Find your nearest A&W here.

7. Burger King — Impossible Whopper

Calories: 629

It’s refreshing to see BK avoid snagging the bottom spot, even if this is still pretty close to the bottom. But that doesn’t mean Burger King’s Impossible Whopper is good. Not by a long shot.

This has that unmistakable BK charred flavor you’ve come to expect from a Whopper, only this version is grainier (instead of nervy, which is also not ideal) with a sort of nutty flavor — making it abundantly clear that what you’re eating is not meat. Still, the overall experience remains quite similar to eating an actual Whopper. This means if you love the Whopper, you’re going to love this.

Speaking personally, I don’t love the Whopper nor do I love this. It’s served up with a charbroiled “meat” patty on a sesame bun with mayo, ketchup, the worst lettuce you’ve ever seen, onions, and pickles with the option for cheese. Since I’m neither vegan nor vegetarian I get the cheese, always. It makes it marginally better.

The Bottom Line

Almost exactly like eating a Whopper. Take that how you will.

Find your nearest Burger King here.

6. The Habit — Veggie Burger

Calories: 470

The Habit’s Veggie Burger is a considerable step up from A&W and Burger King’s plant-based options, in that it’s actually palatable. Featuring a vegan-friendly all-veggie Morning Star patty on a wheat bun with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions, the real star of this burger is the sweet mustard dressing, which pairs perfectly with the surprisingly savory veggie patty.

It doesn’t taste anything like meat, and that’s a good thing here. This patty isn’t trying to fool your tastebuds into eating something you’re not. If you really want to level up the experience, get it topped with avocado.

The Bottom Line

Delicious and probably the best option for serious vegans who want a legit vegan fast food experience.

5. Carl’s Jr/Hardees — Beyond Fiery Famous Star

Carl

Calories: 770

Carl’s Jr would’ve ranked higher if they didn’t foolishly drop their Beyond BBQ Cheeseburger, which was essentially a Western Bacon Cheeseburger without the bacon — meaning it came doused in BBQ sauce and loaded up with crispy onion rings. I can’t for the life of me figure out why the heck they’d get rid of such a beautiful stoner-friendly veggie-based creation.

Please, a moment of silence for a fallen comrade.

Moving on.

Carl’s Jr’s current best plant-based burger is the Beyond Fiery Famous Star, which comes topped with pepper jack cheese, pickled jalapeños, and what Carl’s Jr calls “Fiery Sauce” (which, as far as I can tell, is some sort of blend between a citrus-y and spicy habanero sauce, tamed down by mayo). Underneath the charbroiled patty are crispy white onions, tomatoes, and a single sad leaf of lettuce.

The patty here retains Carl’s Jr’s signature charred flavor, but instead of being a grain-filled sandy mess like the Impossible Whopper, this actually has a great savory flavor — reminiscent of the chain’s more high-end burger selections, if not slightly drier (which is why the Beyond BBQ was so good). Carl’s Jr also makes a Beyond Famous Star without the fiery sauce and jalapenos, it’s a tad boring but will suffice if you don’t dig spice.

The Bottom Line

We suppose it’s theoretically still possible to order the Beyond BBQ Cheeseburger, simply order a Western Bacon and swap out the meat for a Beyond patty and ditch the bacon. What does that have to do with the Beyond Fiery Famous Star? Nothing, we just wish we had a reason to talk about what Carl’s Jr used to have.

This entry is good, not great.

4. Johnny Rockets — Gardein Black Bean Burger

Johnny Rockets

Calories: 330

Johnny Rockets Gardein (yes, that’s how you spell it, it’s not a typo) Black Bean Burger has been quietly available at Johnny Rockets for a few years now, and, judging by sight alone, it doesn’t look too notable. But on the tastebuds, this burger is surprisingly delicious. The patty is of the garden variety, so no meat mimicking here, instead you get a grilled patty made of primarily black beans with bits of rice, corn, and what I think really sets it apart from the competition — bell peppers.

Note to every other plant-based burger out there: Add bell peppers to your sandwiches, even if it’s on top of an Impossible or Beyond patty. They add such a depth of delicious peppery flavor to anything. The Johnny Rockets Gardein Black Bean comes topped with green leaf lettuce, tomatoes, and can be easily upgraded with the inclusion of fresh avocado and grilled onions. The burger is served on an oat-crusted whole wheat bun, which adds a nice sweetness to each bite.

The Bottom Line

A delicious black-bean-based burger. Add avocado and your favorite sauce (Johnny Rockets BBQ, every time) to heighten the experience.

Find your nearest Johnny Rockets here.

3. Fatburger — Impossible Fatburger

Fatburger

Calories: 526

For me, a good plant-based burger is either a burger that perfectly mimics meat or a one that makes me not miss having a juicy piece of beef.

Fatburger’s Impossible Burger fits the former criteria — tasting strikingly like a real burger. The consistency is a near match, with a deliciously charred patty that falls apart in your mouth just like a regular Fatburger. The stock Impossible comes with “The Works” which consists of mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, relish, and mustard but totally vegan customizations are possible and Fatburger makes sure not to cross-contaminate cooking utensils.

If you’re not vegan, definitely order this baby with cheese. One slice of American, one slice of Swiss.

The Bottom Line

Strikingly similar to Fatburger’s Original Fatburger. So similar to meat in taste and consistency, in fact, that you could definitely trick your friends into believing they are biting into a genuine Fatburger.

Find your nearest Fatburger here.

2. Shake Shack — ‘Shroom Burger

Calories: 550

Not at all vegan, but delicious nonetheless, Shake Shack’s ‘Shroom Burger features a fried portobello mushroom as its patty stuffed with a blend of melted muenster and cheddar cheese topped with lettuce, tomato, and Shake Shack’s Shack sauce.

The ‘Shroom burger has a deep-fried and crispy exterior that breaks away into a warm molten cheese center which, for better and worse, totally masks the flavor of the portobello mushroom itself. So while it doesn’t taste anything like a portobello, it still provides that a savory umami base packed with flavor, which really helps you to not miss meat at all.

The Bottom Line

A top-tier veggie burger but, sadly, not an option for vegans.

Find your nearest Shake Shack here.

1. Umami Burger

Calories: 1020 (For Impossible Umami Burger) / 870 (For Impossible Truffle Burger)

This is easily the best plant-based burger currently on the market. Period. nd of article.

I’m sincerely sorry that it’s only available in SoCal, NorCal, New York City, and Chicago (and the Bahamas or Japan if you’re out there), but it is what it is. Because Umami Burger isn’t widely available to everyone, I seriously considered not including it at all, but… it’s just too f*cking delicious to ignore.

As good as Shake Shack’s ‘Shroom Burger is, it doesn’t even come close to the work of art that is the Umami Impossible burger, which is better than most fast-food beef burgers on the market. The flavors come in waves here, with an initial savory burst that subtly mellows out into a gradient of flavors that run the gamut from deliciously earthy to the type of lean meat flavor you might find from a fancy grass-fed burger.

And yet, this thing is still incredibly juicy (like a high-fat burger), melting in your mouth and offering a rich balance and contrast to the crisp pickles, caramelized onions, bright tomatoes, and umami-laden Umami sauce (which probably contains fish sauce and MSG, vegans beware).

There are actually days I want an Umami Impossible over a real burger. That’s high praise. If you really want to take things to the next level, grab Umami’s Impossible Truffle Burger which swaps out all the toppings for a mix of truffle aioli, truffle fondue, and a truffle glaze.

The Bottom Line

Eating a plant-based burger this good makes meat feel totally uneccasary.

Find your nearest Umami Burger here.

Smrtdeath Is ‘Too Far Gone’ In A Somber ‘Uproxx Sessions’ Performance

This week’s guest on Uproxx Sessions is Smrtdeath, a genre-bending rapper and singer from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, singing his defiant anthem, “Too Far Gone.” Mashing up emo and punk influences with hip-hop production sensibilities, Smrtdeath is part of an underground movement that doesn’t follow the conventional rules of popular music. Smrtdeath himself takes things a step further, refusing to abide by the conventions of fashion, as well, as seen on the cover of his November album, Somethjng’s Wrong (that’s not a typo).

On “Too Far Gone,” Smrtdeath addresses any potential criticisms of his lifestyle head-on: “Living on my time, give a fuck about what they say,” he snarls. “All of this advice but it’s coming from no pain.” On that same note, he’s previously spoken about the encouraging messaging behind his music. “You’ve got to remember that things can be better,” he said. “You will come out on the other side.”

UPROXX Sessions is Uproxx’s performance show featuring the hottest up-and-coming acts you should keep an eye on. Featuring creative direction from LA promotion collective, Ham On Everything, and taking place on our “bathroom” set designed and painted by Julian Gross, UPROXX Sessions is a showcase of some of our favorite performers, who just might soon be yours, too.

Lil Tjay Is A Jack Of All Trades On The Wide-Ranging ‘Destined 2 Win’

The RX is Uproxx Music’s stamp of approval for the best albums, songs, and music stories throughout the year. Inclusion in this category is the highest distinction we can bestow, and signals the most important music being released throughout the year. The RX is the music you need, right now.

There’s no shortage of confidence on Lil Tjay’s latest full-length album, Destined 2 Win. The 22-year-old Bronx, New York native arrived with the assurance of an upperclassman on his swaggering debut, True 2 Myself, in 2018 and the scuffs and scrapes he’s taken since have done little to dull the sparkle in his eye as he guides the listener through 21 tracks displaying his wide-ranging abilities. However, you know how the saying goes: a Jack of all trades is a master of none, and that aphorism holds true despite the poise with which Tjay bears himself on his shape-shifting sophomore album.

There’s a lot to be said for the sort of confidence Tjay projects here. Some of us go 30 years or more without ever finding the level of intoxicating self-belief that allows him to write song titles like “Born 2 Be Great” without a hint of irony. Of course, self-belief and self-awareness seldom go hand-in-hand; whether that’s a boon to this album or a drawback depends on your point of view. I’m ambivalent; on one hand, I’m impressed by how deftly he dips into each stylistic tureen from which he draws his inspiration. On the other hand, I really wish that his own artistic voice would cut through the noise more distinctly, showing us who he is both as an artist and a person.

For instance, as Tjay metamorphoses, chameleonlike, between hood motivational speaker on propulsive tracks like “Hood Rich” and “Run It Up” and heartbroken, crooning lothario on “Irregular Love” and “Calling My Phone,” it gets increasingly difficult to pin down a unique worldview or dodge the sense that we’ve heard all this before. However, there’s an undeniable polish and panache to the proceedings that lends the sense that Tjay really put a lot of thought and effort into these songs to make them sound as catchy and captivating as possible.

When Tjay wants to party, “Move” and “Oh Well” provide plenty of the body-first, brain-second energy that makes such tracks work at their highest levels, then, when he tells us “Love Hurts,” he makes us believe him, worrying such juicy lyrical bones as “I see you postin’, that just put me on alert.” He’s certainly a product of his generation, pain-watching an ex’s social media and reacting in real-time, even as he admits “I know you feedin’ off of what I started first.”

Wearing his inspirations on his sleeve can bite him at times; his outright Drake impression on “Born 2 Be Great” is a microcosm of how much his flow treads in the footsteps of his forebears — ones who still have firm grasps on the pop culture zeitgeist. It also highlights just how little actual innovation he’s doing here. The singsong delivery he uses for most of the project has more-or-less been done to death and the beats, with their church bell chimes and menacing major chords, provide suitably ominous backdrops for his middling boasts and vague threats.

Through it all, his confidence carries, though. There’s a plainspoken earnestness that comes with that lack of self-critique or self-doubt. Few lines will stand out, but he sticks the landing on every one of them. By not taking huge swings, he rarely misses, offering a satisfying listen that doesn’t overstay its welcome, even if the back half of the album tends to drone. At 21 tracks, things could really drag, but instead, he brings the overall run time in at a crisp hour and five minutes, owing most of the dead weight to bonus tracks, which consist of older releases such as the Justin Bieber-sampling “None Of Your Love,” which was likely tacked-on to improve streaming metrics.

Although Destined 2 Win doesn’t offer many surprises or tremendous strides in character development for the burgeoning star, it does its job as a showcase for his burnished songwriting well enough to justify its existence. Eventually, Tjay’s young fan base will want more from him than empty flexes and generic “made it out the struggle” rhymes, and Destined doesn’t do quite enough to convince that he’ll be able to deliver when that time comes. His swagger is enough to coast on for now, with his charm as an artist and gift for imitation giving him a smooth surface to glide on while he figures himself out. Hopefully, no one scratches that surface before he does.

Destined 2 Win is out now on Columbia Records. Get it here.

The WNBA’s 2021 Jerseys Include Some Of The Best Unis We’ve Ever Seen

The WNBA announced its full slate of uniforms for the upcoming year, which will be its 25th. Each of the league’s 12 teams will receive a trio of kits through Nike: the WNBA Nike Heroine Edition (home), the WNBA Nike Explorer Edition (away), and the WNBA Nike Rebel Edition (third).

There are a few fun twists that all of these will include, like all of them being numbered 1/144 to celebrate the 144 players who make up WNBA rosters. But at the end of the day, the important things with unis is that they look cool and tell a story, and fortunately for the players who will wear them on a nightly basis, that absolutely happened, as some of these threads are among the best sports uniforms that have been released.

“The basketball uniform is an important representation of the brand of WNBA players and teams, and a point of pride for fans,” WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in a statement. “In partnership with Nike, unveiling new and exciting adaptations of the WNBA uniforms is a dynamic way to build on the foundation of the league’s first 25 years.”

The Explorer edition threads feature some gems — I’m partial to the Chicago Sky’s pinstripe-inspired look and the palm tree on display on the Los Angeles Sparks’ unis. Don’t sleep on the Phoenix Mercury’s kits, either, as a good gradient should never go unrecognized.

Nike

The Rebel editions include some of the real showstoppers. For my money, the best of the bunch is the Indiana Fever’s jerseys that pay tribute to Stranger Things, and go down as one of the best individual uniforms in sports right now. The Sky’s are once again quite good, as are the ones for the Minnesota Lynx, which celebrate the First Avenue concert venue in Minneapolis, as are the Washington Mystics’ 19th Amendment-inspired jerseys.

Nike

Usually these kinds of widespread uniform releases feature a few major misses, but Nike and the WNBA went 24-for-24 here. The Rebel edition threads dropped on April 8, while the Explorer editions come out April 14.

Somebody Played The ‘Montero’ Video On A Game Boy Advance And Lil Nas X Is Blown Away

Lil Nas X and “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” have been everywhere lately, and now, that includes the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo’s handheld video game console that was discontinued over a decade ago.

A Twitter user known as pynnion shared a 36-second video of some of the “Montero” video playing on a Game Boy Advance system and wrote, “My mom took my phone so I’m watching the call me by your name music video on my gameboy @LilNasX.” The rapper was amazed by what he saw, as he shared the post and tweeted, “how is this real.”

As pynnion noted, this was achieved by using specialized software to convert the original video into a file format the Game Boy Advance can read and then putting the converted file on a “flash cart,” which is essentially a blank Game Boy Advance game cartridge that users can load their own game files onto. Presumably, the video format used is the same one Nintendo used back when they used to make Game Boy Advance Video cartridges that contained movies and episodes of TV shows. Somebody else did this recently when they converted Tenet for Game Boy Advance playback.

Watch “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” playing on a Game Boy Advance above.
