Willie Nelson Is Trying To Petition The Biden Administration To Make 4/20 A National Holiday

Acclaimed country musician and famous stoner Willie Nelson has his fair share of cannabis stories. He’s not only toked up with legends like Snoop Dogg, but he even smoked a joint on the roof of the White House with Jimmy Carter’s son. Now, Nelson is fighting on behalf of cannabis users everywhere by attempting to make 4/20 a nationally-recognized holiday.

Nelson’s organization, Luck Reunion, officially put forth the petition earlier this month. It calls on the Biden Administration to deem April 20 through 29 the “High Holidays” in honor of Willie Nelson’s birthday, and is currently just a few hundred signatures away from their 2,500 signature goal:

“Dear President Biden and distinguished members of Congress, April 20th, known in these parts as 4/20, has long been celebrated as a holiday in smokey circles throughout this fine country, but in reality for cannabis users, one day just isn’t enough. In fact, for us, the ‘High Holidays’ begin on 4/20 and end on 4/29, the birthday of the legendary Willie Nelson.

The fine people of Luck, Texas, and supporters of the great Willie Nelson, on behalf of cannabis users around the nation, are writing today to ask you to consider declaring the 9 days spanning April 20 to April 29 an official national holiday: the ‘High Holidays.’

We believe that recognition of the ‘High Holidays’ opens the door to much needed dialogue supporting the many benefits of cannabis while helping to remove the unjustified stigmas currently surround this amazing plant.

Please puff, puff, and pass this to your friends in Congress for consideration.”

The petition concludes with a quote from Willie Nelson, which reads, “I think people need to be educated to the fact that marijuana is not a drug. Marijuana is an herb and a flower. God put it here. If He put it here and He wants it to grow, what gives the government the right to say that God is wrong?”

Check Out Zion Williamson’s First Shoe, The Jordan Zion 1

Zion Williamson entered the NBA with massive expectations. It was the product of being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 Draft and also the fact that he had dominated highlight reels for much of his high school and college career with high-flying dunks and a physically dominant style that was NBA ready at the age of 18.

Injuries meant it took a bit for his career to start, but once he got on the court he proved he belonged and quickly showed why he was deserving of the hype. The dunks are what get everyone talking, but he’s become an elite finisher at and below the rim, bullying opponents to get to the restricted area where he has incredible touch to get the ball up and in the hoop over and around defenders. Williamson’s rise to stardom hasn’t been a surprise, and many have looked to him as one the next great superstars in the NBA. One thing that all NBA superstars have in common is a signature sneaker, and on Tuesday Zion officially joined that group as Jordan unveiled the Zion 1.

Jordan

The four colorways of the Zion 1 unveiled on Tuesday will release beginning on April 23. The Gen Zion, black and white colorway coming first with a limited release in New Orleans, with other colorways coming in the weeks to follow — the blue ZNA colorway on May 5, the Noah colorway designed by his younger brother on May 19, and the Marion colorway coming May 26.

From a performance standpoint, the goal was to create a shoe that could handle all the various pressures Williamson’s unique combination of size, power, speed, and bounce create. The padded tongue relieves pressure from lacing, while the forefoot strap (seen underneath the mesh upper) looks to add stability for cutting and takeoff. For extra cushioning, the sneaker features a full length Zoom Air strobel stacked on top of a Zoom Air unit for maximum bounce and cushion. The base of the shoe also extends outward to provide more stability, with Nike taking inspiration from the “massive tires on Williamson’s truck” to always keep his feet above the platform even as his powerful frame cuts and moves.

From a design perspective, the Zion 1 wanted to embrace his love of superheros and create a look of superhero armor on the tongue, and also adds the Z he gets cut into the side of his hair on the side of the sneaker as well. As for Zion’s pitch for why you should wear his shoe? Well, that’s pretty simple.

Flying Lotus Releases ‘Black Gold’ With Thundercat From His Upcoming Netflix Show, ‘Yasuke’

Netflix’s new samurai anime Yasuke premieres at the end of the month but today, the show’s executive producer Flying Lotus released two new songs from its soundtrack, including “Black Gold” featuring fellow anime fan Thundercat. FlyLo also shared “Between Memories” featuring Niki Randa today. You can listen to both via the Spotify embeds below.

YasukeThe Boondocks and another Netflix anime, Cannon Busters. Speaking with Apple Music about the new show, Flying Lotus credited the creation process with helping him get through the pandemic:

Honestly, it kept me sane. It was the best thing I could ask for because I had to be home. If I had touring and stuff, it would have been a little bit funky to really engage with the project like I was able to. I got to just really focus on it and just be a samurai for a while. It was really nice to just have that to run to, this universe, especially when all that Trumpy stuff was going on and things were getting all crazy. I was so glad just to shut that off and get to business. I knew when they were starting to deliver visuals and stuff that it was about to get intense. I was like, “Ah,” and I still had to try to figure out what I wanted it all to sound like. So it was a lot of meditating on the vibe, and I found a lot of parallels between the Yasuke story and being part of this thing. Trying to make music in the Japanese anime system, it’s a different experience than scoring something here in America. It’s just their way of doing things is so different to ours. It took a minute to grow and it took them to be willing to accept us, to work with our schedule, and take on our story as well. So it was a lot of love from both sides really on that.

Listen to “Black Gold” and “Between Memories” above.

Dua Lipa Transforms Arlo Parks’ ‘Eugene’ Into An Acoustic Ballad With A Smoldering Cover

Dua Lipa’s disco revival album Future Nostalgia was released over a year ago and since the singer hasn’t been able to tour, she’s worked hard to find creative ways to perform her songs. On Monday, the singer brought a couple of her tracks to the BBC Live Lounge, where she performed stripped-down versions of her Future Nostalgia tunes, and also took on a cover of a song by rising UK indie singer Arlo Parks.

For her performance, Lipa was joined by just a piano and a few backup singers, letting her wide-ranging vocals take on most of the work. The singer opted to graciously cosign Parks with a rendition of “Eugene,” a track from her debut album Collapsed In Sunbeams that details the pain of falling in love with a childhood best friend.

Along with her “Eugene” cover, Lipa shared a soaring version of her hit song “Hallucinate.” Lipa also gave a performance of her recent single “We’re Good,” which she says was inspired by an amicable breakup. “The whole story behind the song is an amicable breakup,” she said. “I think a lot of people wish and hope for those, especially because they can be such a difficult process to go through that at some point, you just hope that it’s a very easy break and you can both just move on with your life.”

Watch Dua Lipa perform “Hallucinate,” “We’re Good,” and Arlo Parks’ “Eugene” above and below.

All The Best New Indie Music From This Week

Indie music has grown to include so much. It’s not just music that is released on independent labels, but speaks to an aesthetic that deviates from the norm and follows its own weirdo heart. It can come in the form of rock music, pop, or folk. In a sense, it says as much about the people that are drawn to it as it does about the people that make it.

Every week, Uproxx is rounding up the best new indie music from the past seven days. This week we got the announcement of Lucy Dacus’ highly anticipated third solo album, another genre-defiant new track from Foxing, and an album of Paul McCartney remixes. Check out the rest of the best new indie music below.

While we’re at it, sign up for our newsletter to get the best new indie music delivered directly to your inbox, every Monday.

The Armed – Ultrapop

One of the most mysterious — yet constantly talked-about — bands of 2021 is The Armed. Ultrapop is latest from the Detroit punks and is what Steven Hyden could only describe as “bonkers” in a recent Indie Mixtape newsletter. In addition to being a notably very strong group of individuals, The Armed makes music that is very difficult to classify, with sounds ranging from raging hardcore to a more melodic form of electro-fused power pop.

Greta Van Fleet – The Battle At Garden’s Gate

The latest from these modern classic rockers is bigger, shinier, and even more bombastic than the band’s debut. The Battle At Garden’s Gate also features a song that Steven Hyden described for Uproxx as “Axl Rose singing a Celine Dion power ballad on the hull of the Titanic as it is set ablaze by dragons.” What more could you possibly ask for from this young quartet? For a deep dive on why Greta Van Fleet gets so much hate, check out the most recent installment of our Indiecast visualizer series.

Paul McCartney – McCartney III Imagined

Last year, Paul McCartney shared his latest solo album McCartney III, which he recorded by himself throughout quarantine. Now, the Beatle has enlisted some of the brightest stars in rock music including Phoebe Bridgers, Anderson .Paak, St. Vincent, Khruangbin, and more, to reimagine and cover the album’s tracks for a project fittingly titled McCartney III Imagined. The variety of performance styles across the LP makes for a very interesting listen.

Sharon Van Etten – epic Ten

Over the last several weeks, I’ve been including in this column selections from Sharon Van Etten’s epic Ten reissue, which featured an entire album of covers from Big Red Machine, Shamir, Courtney Barnett and Vagabon, and many more. Now, the celebratory project is finally out in its full form, allowing fans to put the original and reimagined tracks side by side.

Babygirl – Losers Weepers

Canadian duo Babygirl have been more of less prolific over the last five years or so, with new songs and projects dropping every few months. Losers Weepers is the latest release, a six-track pop rock EP that is “a collection of songs written for anybody who feels like an underdog, whether it be in their relationships, careers, whatever,” according to a statement from the band.

Lucy Dacus – “Hot & Heavy”

Three years after breaking through with her sophomore album Historian, Lucy Dacus is back with Home Video, a new solo album. The album is preceded by the sought-after fan favorite track “Thumbs,” as well as “Hot & Heavy,” an introspective and nostalgic number that Dacus says is “about me outgrowing past versions of myself.”

Foxing – “Go Down Together”

After a few years of silence since the release of their epic album Nearer, My God, Foxing is slowly returning to the spotlight with new music. “Go Down Together” is the second song from the St. Louis band in a few weeks, and finds them leaving behind their emo-tinged roots in favor of more pop sensibilities. Musically and stylistically, the track is “among the band’s most accessible work so far,” writes Derrick Rossignol for Uproxx.

Origami Angel – “Footloose Cannonball Brothers”

Origami Angel is gearing up to release their sophomore album, Gami Gang, a sprawling double-LP that is already one of my favorite albums of 2021. I’ll be the first to admit that it’s been difficult to really get excited about new music over the last year. However, “Footloose Cannonball Brothers” is an example of a track so undeniably engaging that it’s difficult to look past, making Origami Angel an important band to watch over the next several months.

Jodi – “Go Slowly”

You might recognize multi-instrumentalist Nick Levine from their time on the guitar and pedal steel in Pinegrove. Now, Levine is setting out on their own for a solo project under the name Jodi. “Go Slowly” is the first taste of what to expect from Jodi’s debut album Blue Heron, a beautiful self-described “queer country” track that retains a refined twang from Levine’s former project.

Maple Glider – “Swimming”

Australian songwriter Tori Zietsch is gearing up to release her debut album under the Maple Glider moniker in a few short months. To Enjoy The Only Thing is previewed by “Swimming,” a sparse, ethereal number that Zietsch said is a “rubbish attempt at a love song.”

EKKSTACY – “I Want To Be By Your Side” (ft. Herhexx)

18-year-old Vancouver songwriter EKKSTACY has delivered the perfect soundtrack for a gloomy day with “I Want To Be By Your Side.” Featuring guest vocals from Herhexx, the dreary, straightforward guitar riff is supplemented by rolling percussion as the duo recall life failures through a veil of heavy reverb.

Tendertwin – “Absolute Nobody”

Bilge Nur Yilmaz was born in Turkey, but currently splits her time between Philadelphia and London. The music of Yilmaz’s Tendertwin project retains this feeling of existing between time and space, with the new track “Absolute Nobody” employing elements of folk and pop to create a unique sound that is equal parts relaxing and intriguing.

Islands – “Set The Fairlight”

Islands’ first album in five years, Islomania, is due in June, and the band is steadily rolling out new music to ease back into the musical spotlight. “Set The Fairlight” is the latest preview of the new LP, a track that Nick Thorburn said is about “isolation and the desire to reach out and touch someone” in the midst of a global pandemic. Don’t let the weighty subject matter deter you – “Set The Fairlight” is an extremely fun synth-pop number.

Uwade – “The Man Who Sees Tomorrow”

21-year-old singer-songwriter Uwade grew her following greatly last year after being featured on Fleet Foxes’ Shore. Now, the Nigerian-American artist is sharing her second-ever original track with “The Man Who Sees Tomorrow,” a gorgeous and aching ode to her late father.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Anthony Edwards Listed All The Baseball Players He Can Name And Insists He Could Throw 100 MPH

Anthony Edwards may very well be on his way to the Rookie of the Year award, although LaMelo Ball’s impending return in Charlotte for the stretch run might have something to say about that. In any case, Edwards’ rookie season in Minnesota has been a fascinating one, as he deals with roster instability around him but seems, at least outwardly, unfazed by what could be a frustrating situation.

Edwards’ personality has always shined and the NBA world as a whole has gotten to know the extremely funny, brutally honest rookie this season and it has, truly, been one of the great joys of a strange, sometimes joyless season. His refusal to sugarcoat anything has made him, immediately, one of the best interviews in the NBA, whether that’s walking off the court when he’ll tell you straight up that they wanted RJ Barrett taking the last shot or after a game when asked about new owner Alex Rodriguez, who he was completely unaware was a famous baseball star.

The two have since been put in contact on Instagram, but for someone who has played baseball before to not be aware of A-Rod is something people found fascinating — and thought was maybe Edwards having some fun with everyone. However, Edwards insists that was real in a new (and fantastic) interview with Tyler Ricky Tynes for GQ, and the two proceeded to remember some guys, with Edwards offering up Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds, Jackie Robinson, Chipper Jones, Freddie Freeman, “No. 22? the left-handed hitter for the Braves” (I think he meant Jason Heyward), “Ortiz…the dude who be hittin’ the home runs” (David Ortiz), and Derek Jeter as the baseball players he’s aware of.

It’s a very funny exchange but the best part comes later, when Edwards tells Tynes that he fully believes he could throw 100 miles per hour within “a month” of training and getting his arm right, and could hit 92 right now.

Even though you don’t know any baseball players, you used to play baseball. You said you could play in the MLB right now, do you still think that’s true?

Ohhhhh, fasho.

What makes you say that with such confidence?

You gotta give me a month to get my arm back right.

A…a month?!

I gotta get my arm back right! I was a pitcher, but it be hurtin’ my elbow. So once I get my arm back right we be good.

Okay how fast are you throwing it?

If I throw it right now?

If you throw it right now, and if I gave you a month.

If you gave me a month it might be a hunnid.

100 mph?

A hunnid.

You lying ya ass off.

[laughs] I’m dead ass! I’m dead ass! I sweatagod!

I want to see a video of you a month from now once you train.

Nah, I’m not finna train for that.

What is it if you allegedly threw it right now, then?

92, 93 mph.

92 right now?!

Yeah, fasho!

Well, the Braves might be able to use you.

Yeah, they can use me…..In my offseason!

Long live Anthony Edwards.

Weed Brands And Strains That Demand A Spot In Your 4/20 Rotation

This year’s 4/20 celebration is going to be a tad bittersweet for a lot of potheads out there. The good news is that it’s probably going to be a whole lot less anxiety-filled than last year’s 4/20, which landed in the early days of Covid-19-induced self-isolation. The idea of smoking back then with friends was absolutely out of the question, and many even turned to edibles just to avoid inhaling smoke into their lungs and experiencing a coughing fit that would’ve surely freaked out the neighbors.

Since then, things have greatly improved and vaccines are rolling out in a hurry, but life isn’t quite back to “normal” yet — so a lot of us are still going to be lighting up that bowl solo this year. Smoking with friends is a lot of fun, but a solo smoke session can be just as good, you just need the right music or entertainment, a gang of snacks, and quality herb.

In honor of the second (and PLEASE GOD LET IT BE THE LAST!) 4/20 of the pandemic, we’re shouting out the cannabis brands and strains we find ourselves reaching for again and again. Click the prices if you feel inspired to try a few!

Connected — Biscotti

Strain: Hybrid
Dominant Terpenes: Caryophyllene, Myrcene, Limonene
THC: 23.47%

Retail Price: $80

The Experience

Incredibly pricey but worth every penny, Connected’s Biscotti deserves permanent shelf space in your house. This is a special occasion weed, with rich and earthy notes of coffee and chocolate with a slight citrus-y aftertaste that lingers nicely on your palate and results in a euphoric and slightly relaxing high that’ll have you eager to create.

It tastes so good you’ll actually enjoy holding the smoke in your lungs. But be careful, that’s a really easy way to get super high.

The Bottom Line

An earthy hybrid that hits that Goldilocks zone of THC, providing you with a euphoria-induced high that never dips into paranoid or bad vibes. Perfect for 4/20 smoking, or during any other celebration.

High Life Farms — Stuffed French Toast

High Life Farms

Strain: Hybrid
Dominant Terpenes: Caryophyllene, Limonene, Pinene
THC: 32.82%
CBD: .08%

Average Retail Price: $50

The Experience

Sporting a sweet cherry and citrus aroma with notes of cinnamon and vanilla, High Life Farms Stuffed French Toast packs an indica leaning high that feels similar to that near food-coma ecstasy that occurs after a big breakfast. That might sound heavy, but once the high drifts from the body to the head, the experience shifts into a pleasing buzz that vibrates behind the eyes and just makes you feel good.

The Bottom Line

A great wake and bake strain that strikes a nice balance between relaxing and euphoric.

Cannabiotix — Cereal Milk

Strain: Hybrid
Dominant Terpenes: Limonene, Caryophyllene, Pinene
THC: 29%-33%
CBD: .27%

Retail Price: $70

The Experience

Another euphoria-inducing hybrid, Cannabiotix Cereal Milk is as delicious as its namesake, with frosty green buds that provide an appetite-stimulating mix of earthy spicy notes with a citrus and cinnamon aftertaste. It’s almost impossible to smoke a bowl of Cereal Milk without cracking a smile, so definitely smoke this one with some much-missed friends if you’re already vaccinated.

The Bottom Line

Eye-catching frosty nugs that provide a warm high that feels every bit as luscious as it tastes.

Ember Valley — Sundae Driver

Eaze

Strain: Indica
Dominant Terpenes: Caryophyllene, Limonene, Linalool, Humulene
THC: 23.74%
CBD: .06%

Retail Price: $55

The Experience

If you’re looking for a way to wind down from a long day, Ember Valley’s Sundae Driver is your strain. Featuring indulgent notes of earthy dark chocolate with dense and creamy smoke, Sundae Driver is a powerful indica strain that kills stress and the motivation to do anything that isn’t even remotely relaxing. Because of its earthy flavor, this strain makes a great pairing with a blunt wrap (we suggest vanilla) which helps add to its decadent nature.

The Bottom Line

A powerful end of the night strain that’ll instantly send you to bed or melt the stress of the day away.

Korova — Animal Face x Kush Mints

Weedmaps

Strain: Hybrid (Sativa Dominant)
Dominant Terpenes: Caryophyllene, Limonene, Linalool, Pinene, Myrcene
THC: 29.80%

Retail Price: $55

The Experience

Surprisingly sweet, this cross blend between Animal Face and Kush Mints by famed edible company Korova provides an uplifting high that’ll make you feel so happy that you get kind of dumb. Featuring an earthy mint flavor with hints of floral sweetness and diesel, Animal Face x Kush Mints is relaxing without ever feeling like its weighing you down, striking a nice middle ground between an in-your-head sativa and shut-you-down indica.

The Bottom Line

Sweet and floral with an uplifting high that can’t help but make you smile.

A Golden State — Mountain Shadows

Med Men

Strain: Hybrid
Dominant Terpenes: Limonene, Myrceene, Linalool, Pinene
THC: 25.3%

Retail Price: $56.57

The Experience

A Golden State’s Mountain Shadows hybrid is a delight to the senses. Opening a jar will greet you with forest-y notes of pine and provides a citrus-forward flavor with herbal notes of lavender. The high here is relaxing, melting away anxiety and numbing the senses a bit, for a calm and focused high perfect for listening to music or taking in nature. A great choice for after your 4/20 hike.

The Bottom Line

Calming and pleasing in both aroma and flavor, Mountain Shadows is a great hybrid strain for taking in and appreciating the beauty that surrounds you. A definite hippie “we’re all connected” strain.

Med Men Red — White Runtz

Med Men

Strain: Hybrid
Dominant Terpenes: Caryophyllene, Limonene, Humulene
THC: 21.1%

Retail Price: $38

The Experience

White Runtz completely earns its name — this strain tastes as close to candy as weed is ever going to get. The flavor here is strongly citrus forward with a hint of artificial cherry and herbal pine notes that provide a nausea-reducing and relaxing high, making it an ideal choice if you’ve got yourself a crossfade going.

The Bottom Line

The best weed to pair with a cocktail or beer.

22Red — LA Punk

22Red

Strain: Hybrid
Dominant Terpenes: Not Available
THC: 30%

Retail Price: $60

The Experience

22Red is an LA-based cannabis brand that comes from System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian and provides a few high potency flavor-forward strains, our favorite of which is the new LA Punk. Featuring a mix of sweet berry and grape flavors, this hybrid leans more on the indica side, offering a relaxing high that tingles the body but doesn’t weigh down your mind, making it a create strain for more creative endeavors.

The Bottom Line

A great choice if you’re looking for a strain to unlock your more creative instincts, LA Punk features a berry-forward flavor and a body tingling high.

Waka Flocka Was Just Given A Lifetime Achievement Award By Donald Trump

As of this week, Waka Flocka is not only a rapper, but he’s an officially-recognized upstanding citizen. He’s now a proud recipient of the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award, which he was given by former blue check Republican Donald Trump.

Flocka was officially awarded a certificate and medal as part of his Lifetime Achievement Award. Per a report from TMZ, the rapper received the honors thanks to his work with the Chicago-based charity Daughter of Destiny Outreach, which is a non-profit that aims to support “women who need help in facing challenges such as unemployment, lack of food, housing, community, and inner healing.” The certificate is dated 2020 but Flocka officially received the award on Friday, though TMZ states the Trump Administration had signed off on everything before he left office.

In a video after being issued the award, Flocka thanked his supporters and his mentor, Dr. Bridget C. Outlaw: “I just want to thank President Trump for recognizing me. Thank Bridget, just thank everybody that love me enough to love you back and do everything that I want to do that’s genuine.”

Flocka also showed off his framed certificate in a beaming Instagram photo. “I gotta thank my pastor/big sister Apostle Dr. Bridget C. Outlaw for teaching and guiding me on this journey God got us on I’m just honored,” he wrote.

While Flocka thanked Trump for giving him the award, the two were briefly rivals in 2016 when Flocka decided to run for president. A year later, the rapper made it clear he wasn’t a fan of the 2016 winner as he grabbed a fan’s Trump jersey at a show and wiped his butt with it on stage.

Kanye West’s Presidential Campaign Financial Disclosures Got Rejected By The Office Of Government Ethics

The fallout from Kanye West’s failed Presidential campaign simply refuses to settle. Not only was it cited as a big potential reason behind his divorce from Kim Kardashian but now, it seems his marriage to her is the reason behind some of his paperwork being rejected by federal campaign overseers. According to Business Insider, the Office of Government Ethics has rejected Kanye’s financial disclosure forms, as Kanye did not include Kim’s income and assets on the forms, citing a rare exemption in state law that officials found suspicious.

The law, which allows candidates to forego disclosing a spouse’s income if they have no knowledge of the income stream and do not expect to derive financial benefit from it, could hardly apply to Kanye, according to an insider at Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. Jordan Libowitz, CREW’s communications director, explained, It’s not just that he did not report it, but that he used an exemption, and a fairly rare one, to reporting. It said among things, that he had no knowledge of what her assets were or where her income came from. And that seems a little tough to believe.”

Remember, Forbes regularly reports on the entire Kardashian family’s financial successes often, including when both Kanye and Kim officially surpassed the billionaire mark (separately). Although the two did have a prenuptial agreement, which is making their divorce easier, apparently, government officials deemed it too much of a stretch to think that Kim’s income wasn’t at least partially tied to Kanye’s (to the point that Kanye’s $53 million debt turnaround in 2016 was subject to speculation that he received a “bailout” of sorts from Kim).

While the discrepancy is unlikely to result in prosecution, Kanye’s campaign was already fraught with numerous ethics and regulatory issues that make it another red flag for investigators looking into his campaign. As of now, it looks like he did spend his own money funding it — around $3 million just collecting signatures and over $6 million overall — but it looks like his last-minute, haphazard practices have continued causing him headaches long after his embarassing loss.

A National Park Expert Shares 4 Tips For Visiting National Parks

Six years ago I decided to drive to the Grand Canyon solo. I was 29 and had never really solo traveled, never camped alone, and didn’t know much (at all) about national parks or what I was getting myself into. I just wanted to go. So I went. I spent a week on the road and in the canyon. I was learning by doing, making a lot of mistakes, and mostly learning how much I had to learn.

Despite some hiccups, it was the most exhilarating week I’d ever experienced. I saw so much incredible beauty and learned so much about myself, about my own capabilities, about others, and about the land. So I just kept traveling solo, mostly to the major U.S. national parks. And now after visiting 52 of the 63 parks solo, I can say that I have learned more lessons than I ever imagined. I’m still learning, of course. But it’s all more intuitive now: What to do, when to do it, how to enjoy the whole experience.

I want to share some of those hard-won lessons with you. After a year of incredible uncertainty and grief, things are finally starting to feel almost — dare I say — normal in some parts of the U.S. Things are opening back up thanks to vaccinations becoming fairly widespread across the country. The common question amongst my friends the last couple of weeks is, “Where can I road trip?” Or, “What National Park can I visit?” And then the technical questions start: “What do I need to know? Where do I stay? What secrets do you have?” Luckily, I have answers to all of those kinds of questions.

So to celebrate National Parks Week, here are a few things I think you should keep in mind while beginning to plan your national park vacation this summer.

1. You need to plan ahead!

The Tip:

I have had a bit of a habit the last few years of just getting into the car and starting to drive without a particular plan or destination. And while in the past this has led me on some incredible adventures, I just don’t think this is the summer to risk it.

A lot has changed this past year (to say the least), and one of those things is reservation systems. So while I am ecstatic that I can make a reservation at the DMV to renew my license in just 15 minutes, reservations aren’t quite as an overwhelmingly positive experience at national parks and campgrounds.

Every year, I visit Grand Teton National Park at least once. I always roll in on my own schedule, and every year I have been happy to find a spot for a few nights at one of the beautiful campgrounds in the park. I assumed I could follow the same pattern this year. To my surprise, while looking at the park website last week, I saw that campgrounds are now nearly all reservations only! And — of course — most of those reservations are already accounted for.

So I rushed to find some workable days to reserve, and then after my confirmation email came through I rushed to tell everyone I know to do the same.

With some people utilizing their flexible schedules to remote work from anywhere this year, there also seems to be a short supply of Airbnbs and hotels in many of the areas around the parks. So even if you don’t camp, you will need to find lodging ASAP — like, when you finish reading this article ASAP. And then also be sure to check that you can even get into the park itself on the days you have planned to be there. Some parks — like Yosemite, Glacier, Rocky Mountain, and Zion — are utilizing reservation systems this summer just to enter the park.

Bottom Line:

Plan ahead. It’s worth the hassle on the front end, undoubtedly, to save yourself from disappointment later.

2. Have A Back-Up Plan

The Tip:

A couple of years ago, I flew to Virginia to visit Shenandoah National Park. I picked up my rental car, set my GPS to my destination, and drove off towards what I was sure would be a great adventure. And it was — just not in the way I expected. Before I reached my destination, I unexpectedly reached a closed road sign. “Turn around,” it said. So I turned around, not yet too concerned. I didn’t have cell service but assumed finding the park would be intuitive. It’s a huge national park. Of course, I will be able to figure out how to get inside … I thought.

I was wrong. By the time I drove all around the park and finally found a ranger station, I found out that the entirety of the road that goes from one end of the park to the other was closed due to downed trees. There was an ice storm in the days before, and I hadn’t even considered looking to see if the roads would be open.

This isn’t the first or last time that has happened to me. I’ve had to maneuver around many road and attraction closures through my park visits. Nature is wild, and things change quickly.

Bottom line:

Now, I take the time to update myself on road conditions, weather, and closures. But even more importantly, I have a backup plan. After the ill-fated trip to Shenandoah, I looked on the map and found a beautiful Ashram to visit nearby. The grounds were gorgeous and in the end, I was happy to have been detoured. I only wish I would have known sooner. So again, plan ahead, but also have a plan B.

3. Try To Find Moments Of Solitude

The Tip:

The common refrain I see online lately is that the parks are “being loved to death.” There’s a lot of chatter that all the parks are overcrowded and that everyone is taking selfies and hogging the trails and parking spots. And, to be fair, that is sometimes true. There are a handful of parks that are very crowded for a few months each year. There are iconic locations within each park that are also almost always crowded. So how do you find a moment of solitude? Or even just a photo without a bunch of influencers behind you?

It seems so simple, but it all comes down to timing. If you want to get a cool photo in a heavily trafficked area, you have to get up early. Very early. Then stake out your spot and get yourself those new profile pics. Later in the day is also sometimes a better bet, but I’ve found that locations are usually more crowded around sunset than sunrise. At dawn, you’ll usually only find yourself with other photographers. So you’re still able to experience some peace.

Want to be surrounded only by the sounds of nature on your hike? Then you might need to scroll down a bit on AllTrails and get out on some of the less-trafficked trails. Popular trails are popular for a reason: They’re beautiful, unique, and iconic. But they are also crowded. So if the classic well-known view isn’t your priority, look to some of the lesser-known.

Bottom Line:

When I visit a new park, I’ll often make a beeline for the gift shop or general store if there is one. I find a seasonal employee and ask them where they go on their day off. They often have the best trail recommendations that are away from the crowds and feel like a special treat.

But remember, some trails in some parks are going to be crowded. If you want the iconic view, get up early. Otherwise, ask around for some hidden gems.

4. Take Photos Of Yourself When You’re By Yourself

The Tip:

Parks are a great opportunity to go a little off-grid, experience some solitude, and forget about the pressures of everyday life. But you also might want to get some cool photos to remember your trip. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

The question I am asked the most is, “How do you take photos of yourself when you’re by yourself? Do you have a secret boyfriend/photographer/drone that follows you around?” And the answer to all 3 is, unfortunately, no. I just have a tripod and an iPhone camera timer. It’s really that simple. If you want to get a little fancier, you can connect a smartwatch with your phone to release the shutter from afar. Do some unapologetic modeling poses and snap away. No partner/photographer/drone needed. Just a little confidence.

Bottom Line:

Take photos! Even if you’re alone. You’ll love sharing and looking back on them.
