Notorious Prankster Tilda Swinton Got Timothée Chalamet Real Good During A Cannes Standing Ovation

Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch made its long-anticipated premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday. Critics are calling it “the film equivalent of a short story collection” with “hand-crafted visual delights and eccentric performances from a stacked ensemble,” raves the Hollywood Reporter, and Anderson’s “most visually remarkable [feature], each frame filled with meticulously crafted small details that add up to a dense, inviting cinematic jewel box,” according to Screen Daily. It received a nine-minute standing ovation, or enough time for Adam Driver to finish two cigarettes. But more importantly, Tilda Swinton pranked Timothée Chalamet real good at the premiere.

“Look at what Tilda Swinton did to Timothee Chalamet during The French Dispatch standing ovation,” tweeted Variety executive editor Ramin Setoodeh, who caught the moment the Memoria star hugged Chalamet — and unknowingly stuck a “Tilda Swinton” back on his back. It’s a real “kick me” move from the Oscar winner / prank-loving rascal.

Winston better watch himself. There’s a new Prank Sinatra in town (in, uh, France).

Here’s more on The French Dispatch:

The French Dispatch brings to life a collection of stories from the final issue of an American magazine published in a fictional 20th-century French city. It stars Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, Lyna Khoudri, Jeffrey Wright, Mathieu Amalric, Stephen Park, Bill Murray, and Owen Wilson.

Wes Anderson’s 10th feature film opens on October 22.

What’s On Tonight: Ronan Farrow Takes On The Powers That Be In ‘Catch And Kill: The Podcast Tapes’

Catch and Kill: The Podcast Tapes (HBO, 9:00pm) — Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ronan Farrow’s podcast undergoes this miniseries treatment here while expanding upon existing interviews with whistleblowers, private investigators, and more. Of course, the podcast itself was inspired by Farrow’s book about the systemic protection of predators, both in Hollywood and beyond. Since Ronan’s the son of Mia Farrow, who was married to Woody Allen (with the whole paternity issue looking awfully odd), the subject of alleged predatory behavior hits particularly hard. The minseries will dig into the powers that be, beginning with the Harvey Weinstein case, for which Ronan’s groundbreaking New Yorker investigative report really got the #MeToo ball rolling. It’s heavy subject matter, of course, but the series promises some new and surprising revelations.

Shark Week 2021 (Discovery+, Discovery, Nat Geo) — The annual shark-involved festivities continue with several new entries, including Stranger Sharks on Discovery+ as well as three entries on Discovery: Air Jaws: Going for Gold (8:00pm) Jaws Awakens: Phred vs. Slash (9:00pm), and Expedition Unknown: Shark Trek (10:00pm). In addition, National Geographic has a pair of offerings: Shark Attack Files (9:00pm) and Shark Attack Investigation: The Paige Winter Story (10:00pm).

The Beast Must Die: (AMC, 9:00pm) — Jared Harris and Cush Jumbo star in this revenge-thriller series (which originally aired on BritBox UK and achieved a viewing record) that has already been renewed for a second season. The story’s based on Nicholas Blake’s 1938 novel and revolves around a mother who’s hell-bent upon avenging her son’s death, all while a detective’s working the case and hoping hoping to solve matters before mom takes justice into her own hands. Meanwhile, the detective’s suffering from PTSD, and yes, this sounds like an enormously chaotic show, but it’s so crushingly executed that you’d be gripping your seat arms if you watched it in a theater.

All American (CW, 8:00pm) — Jordan and Simone are staring down their all-important day while considering how the future will go, and they’re getting input from Billy and Laura.

The Republic Of Sarah (CW, 9:00pm) — This show follows the ending of tranquility of Greylock, N.H., after a stash of valuable coltan leads to new overlords, and a rebellious teacher (Sarah Cooper) steps in to halt the madness. Soon enough, there’s the prospect of Greylock becoming a sovereign nation. This week, Sarah’s moving into executive-order territory, which presents problems of its own.

The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon — Dwayne Johnson, Tom Hiddleston, Tig Notaro, GoldLink Ft. Flo Milli

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert — Keegan Michael-Key, Tones And I

Late Night With Seth Meyers — Scarlett Johansson, Noah Syndergaard, Charlie Benante

Jon Stewart’s New Apple TV Series Starts Shooting This Week In Front Of A Fully Vaccinated Audience

After almost a year of building up hype for his TV return, Jon Stewart’s new series for Apple will start filming this week in New York front of a live audience. However, the show isn’t taking any chances when it comes to COVID safety. The audiences for the July 14 and 16 tapings of The Problem with John Stewart will not only have to provide proof of vaccination, but everyone must wear a mask. Via Deadline:

The Apple TV+ series will require attendees to be fully vaccinated, provide an official vaccination card and complete a wellness screening prior to entering. Audiences and crew members will be required to wear masks at all times.

Obviously, fans of Stewart’s time on The Daily Show are looking forward to his return. There was a massive social media freakout when Stewart reluctantly joined Twitter for the first time and seemingly sent out a request for writers’ packets. However, that enthusiasm has been tempered recently after Stewart made an odd appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert where he pushed the controversial “lab leak” theory. That caused a bit of stir, but we’d still expect a sizable audience at the tapings for Stewart’s new show, if only because it’s his first regular television gig since leaving The Daily Show back in 2015. It’ll be interesting to see what he has up his sleeve after a six-year break.

According to Deadline, The Problem with Jon Stewart will start streaming this fall and will include hour-long episodes focusing on a single “current affairs” topic.

J.B. Smoove Made The Classic Mistake Of Signing Up For Shark Week Because He Thought It Was ‘Shark Tank’

What happens when a country singer and a comedian bang a cowbell underwater to attract the attention of sharks? You’ll find out when the Shark Week special “Brad Paisley’s Shark Country,” featuring Paisley and J.B. Smoove using their respective talents “in shark-infested waters to see how sound can attract or repel sharks,” premieres on Discovery Channel on Tuesday, July 13. But one thing you should not expect is an appearance from Mr. Wonderful or Mark Cuban, much to Smoove’s dismay.

“Everybody knows that I am a huuuge Shark Tank fan, and I have tons of ideas just ready for Shark Tank,” the Curb Your Enthusiasm star told Entertainment Weekly. “So initially when my manager called me — honestly, sometimes I get tunnel vision and there is a long moment of un-clarity on what exactly this is. They’ll tell me something, but I’ll hear something totally different because I’m already juiced up. I’m ready for the celebrity version of Shark Tank, you know?” When his manager pitched him on Shark Week, all Smoove heard was Shark Tank. “Because Shark Tank is on all the time… Shark Week is, what, once a year?” he explained. This is all makes sense to me.

“My brain went to, ‘Maybe I can think of my ideas based on Shark Week that I can still take to Shark Tank. How can I benefit from this mistake and still get a chance to pitch my amazing ideas for Shark Tank, even though it was clear that this was not Shark Tank?’”

Smoove brings up a good point. There are not enough shark-based pitches on Shark Tank. That’s called tapping into an unrealized market. I bet he could get Cuban to invest a cool $120,000 on a shark-shaped cowboy hat. I know I’d buy three.

The ‘Gossip Girl’ Revival Is HBO Max’s Most Popular Show Yet (According To HBO Max, At Least)

HBO Max was hoping to make a big splash with its Gossip Girl revival, and it seems initial returns for the show’s modern reboot are exactly what the streaming service was hoping for.

According to The Wrap, HBO claims the series is already its most popular show. Though no exact numbers were given in the traditional Nielsen-like sense, the network touted a strong impact on social media and a heavy renewed interest in the original version of the show.

According to the streaming service, “Within an hour of the episode’s premiere at 12:01 a.m. PT on Thursday, the show was trending No. 11 nationwide on Twitter, continuing as a Top 5 trend through mid-day.” HBO Max said there were also “15 billion impressions” of “Gossip Girl” content on TikTok pegged to the show’s launch.

In the week ahead of the reboot’s premiere, HBO Max saw a 200% increase in viewership of the first season of the OG series.

Given all the HBO content already available on Max and the sheer volume of new content available there, claiming Gossip Girl as the most popular thing on the service is certainly notable. But without specifics, something streaming services just love to withhold from the public, it’s difficult to say just how popular the show is outside of its walled streaming garden. But at least HBO Max seems happy with the numbers it’s keeping from the rest of us thus far.

Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit Will Take Over Nashville With A Ryman Auditorium Residency This Fall

Jason Isbell’s residencies at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium have become an annual tradition, but the pandemic forced him to take 2020 off. Isbell and his 400 Unit are ready to return for 2021, though, as Isbell has announced details for this year’s edition of the residency.

Cardi B And Offset Got Kulture A Six-Figure Watch For Her Third Birthday

By the time they hit three years old, most children are still learning numbers, let alone how to read a clock. That didn’t stop Cardi B and Offset from giving their child one of the most extravagant birthday presents anyone could receive, whether they were a little kid or senior citizen.

You may be aware of the Swiss luxury watch company Richard Mille, which was founded in 2001 and has since been name-checked in about 200 rap songs as one of the pinnacles of wealth in hip-hop — particularly by Jay-Z and Meek Mill. They can run upward of $1.5 million as a result of both their super high-end craftsmanship and rarity, with only five of the above-mentioned, $1.5 million RM 056 chronograph tourbillons produced.

While the Richard Mille timepiece given to Kulture at her fairytale-themed third birthday party by her parents Cardi B and Offset doesn’t quite reach that price range, the lowest end of the range would set you back over $150,000. For her part, Kulture accepts the present like a typical kid — she looks way more interested in the box. Of course, Offset and Cardi are hardly the first parents in the hip-hop world to overshoot the mark; in 2019, Future was subject to a deluge of jokes for giving his five-year-old a Rolex. Heck, this isn’t even the first time Cardi and Offset splurged on Kulture’s birthday; in 2019, they spent over $400,000 on her birthday, and last year, they bought Kulture a Hermes Birkin bag, presumably to keep stuff like her Fisher-Price figures in.

Check out videos from the extravagant party below.

Cardi B is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Trump Actually Admitted That He Trashes Bad Poll Results As ‘Fake’ But Praises Good Poll Results As ‘The Most Accurate… Ever,’ To The Delight Of His Supporters

In a rare moment of honesty, Donald Trump fully admitted to a CPAC crowd that if the event’s straw poll results look bad for him, he’ll simply call the whole thing “fake.” During his speech on Sunday, Trump flat-out admitted his entire strategy for dealing with information that looks bad for him, and naturally, the audience ate it up even though the former president essentially confessed that he has no problem lying to his supporters on a routine basis.

Via Mediaite:

“By the way, you have a poll coming out,” Trump said about halfway through his remarks. “I want to know what it is. You know they do that straw poll, right?”

“Now, if it’s bad, I just say it’s fake,” Trump continued, as the crowd laughed. “If it’s good, I say that’s the most accurate poll, perhaps ever.”

During his speech, Trump also attempted to cajole CPAC organizers to tell him the results of the straw poll in advance, but they wouldn’t budge. When that strategy didn’t work, he decided to make a bold prediction about what would happen.

“If it’s bad, it’s front-page news in the newspapers and if it’s great, they won’t even cover it,” Trump said.

To the surprise of no one, Trump scored a whopping 98% approval rating from the CPAC crowd, and the results were immediately reported on Fox News. However, there was an interesting wrinkle in the results. According to Mediaite, while Trump was the clear favorite to win the 2024 Republican primary for president, besting Florida Governor Ron DeSantis 70% to 26%, DeSantis dominated the results when Trump was cleared from the field.

Considering the two are currently at odds, with reports coming out that Trump “f*cking hates” DeSantis, these poll results should do wonders for their feud as it makes clear that the Republican Party is ready to back DeSantis if Trump can’t run in 2024.

Shohei Ohtani Is Going To Be The AL Starter And Bat Leadoff In The MLB All-Star Game

Shohei Ohtani is in the midst of one of the greatest individual seasons in Major League Baseball history. That may sound hyperbolic, but the man is leading the league in home runs with 33 and boasts an OPS of 1.062, all while posting a 3.49 ERA in 13 starts for the Angels.

It’s truly insane stuff, and he doesn’t do anything cheaply. At the plate, he’s in the top 1 percent in max exit velocity (119 mph), top 2 percent in average exit velocity (93.7 mph), top 1 percent in barrel rate (26 percent), top 1 percent in hard hit rate (56.9 percent), which can all be seen in the mammoth home runs he hits that go viral. On the mound he’s 60th percentile in fastball velocity (96 mph average) and is 85th percentile in strikeout percentage. All of this is to say, he is one of the coolest baseball players to walk the planet and does so with a joy and enthusiasm that is infectious, which makes complaints that he uses an interpreter incredibly stupid.

Ohtani was selected as an All-Star as both a pitcher and hitter, and he is going to be the unquestioned star of All-Star festivities in Denver this week. On Monday night, he’s going to be the top seed in the Home Run Derby, and then on Tuesday he’s going to bat leadoff for the AL and be the starting pitcher opposite Max Scherzer, as was announced on Monday afternoon.

It’s pretty outrageous for someone to leadoff the All-Star Game and be the starting pitcher, but Ohtani has more than earned that special designation and it’s going to make for a must-see start to the game. The complete AL and NL lineups can be found below.
