GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger Fought Back Tears While Capitol Police Officers Described What They Endured On Jan. 6

After listening to damning testimony from Capitol Police officers who were present at the U.S. Capitol building when it was attacked by MAGA insurrectionists following a Donald Trump rally, Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger struggled to hold back tears. In doing so, he praised the officers for their bravery and vowing to investigate the attempted coup until the truth is uncovered.

Kinzinger is one of the few Republicans who has broken from the party’s allegiance to Trump, and along with Congresswoman Liz Cheney, he’s been a vocal proponent of an investigation into the January 6 attack, which started with a select committee hearing on Tuesday. As a former military officer, Kinzinger empathized with the Capitol Police officers for going through a grueling ordeal and commended their actions.

Via Mediaite:

“I never expected today to be quite as emotional for me as it has been,” Kinzinger opened. “I have talked to a number of you and gotten to know you. I think it’s important to tell you right now, though, you guys may individually feel a little broken because I’ll talk about the effects you have to deal with and you talked about the impact of that day,” he added, his voice breaking with emotions. “You guys won. You guys held.”

Kinzinger also expressed anger towards his own party for doing a “toxic disservice” to the Capitol officers and the American public by trying to derail the investigation.

“I want to know what happened that day but more importantly I want all Americans to be able to trust the work this committee does and get the facts out there free of conspiracy,” Kinzinger said. “This cannot continue to be a partisan fight.”

How ESPN And EA Turned Madden Ratings Into A Week Of Debate

Madden ratings have always mattered, but never quite to the level they do now. Between fans reacting on social media, players making the case for why their rating should be higher, the celebration of joining the 99 Club, and an entire week dedicated to them on ESPN, ratings take over the conversation around football this time of year. There’s so much conversation that even the developers of Madden themselves can’t help but notice when places like ESPN are talking about their game.

“It’s always awesome that so many people pay attention to our ratings,” Madden ratings adjuster Clint Oldenburg says to UPROXX. “It’s fun. But I think that it’s also really, really important for a lot of people. It’s the conversation people [want to] have when the NFL’s ready to kick off.”

While it may be a little weird for some to see ESPN personalities like Mina Kimes and former athletes such as Chad Johnson on TV discussing Madden ratings, in reality, this has been a long time coming and it started with a Jacksonville Jaguars training camp of all places.

“The team was seen at a Jacksonville Jaguars training camp” Joe Fraler of EA Sports told UPROXX. “All of a sudden some pictures of the team went viral and people start speculating if this job is actually real and ESPN being, you know, a world leader in sports really started kind of dig into that narrative.”

ESPN’s interest in the ratings discussion ended up sparking a full E60 story about how ratings are created, the work that goes into them, and how it’s far more than just slapping a random number on them. This is a job that requires hours of pouring over tape, numbers, and really digging into the intricacies of football. Considering that Madden was not only the highest-selling sports game of 2020 but the fourth-highest overall, there is an obvious interest in how these ratings are created.

“We were really just fascinated about the process and the algorithms that they use, and the metrics and just how involved it was,” Andy Tennant of ESPN said to UPROXX. “And so we were given the opportunity by EA to take cameras behind the scenes and that they actually have several developers who meet in the conference room and who diligently review NFL tape and specifically gear in on players…whether it’s speed, agility, power, etc, to ultimately arrive at these at these ratings.”

That interest has led to what is now ratings week. An entire week dedicated by ESPN to break down the latest Madden ratings from lineman to quarterbacks, and it’s not just their own personalities weighing in on the discussion. Former players like Marshawn Lynch and Ed Reed are bringing in their own take as well. Surprised to see athletes caring about how they’re presented in a video game? Don’t be. There might be nobody who cares about ratings in Madden are more than the NFL players themselves. Some see it as a sign of respect, while others just want to be as portrayed as accurately as possible, and they’ll go to great lengths to tell EA why their ratings should be presented a certain way. The earlier mentioned Jaguars training camp? The reason EA was there in the first place was that Leonard Fournette had an issue with his own ratings and wanted to be removed from the game entirely! Never say players don’t care about this stuff.

While Fournette’s reaction went viral, it also goes to show the kind of stress that the developers can go through when working on these games. Get something “wrong” in the eyes of the player or fans and they’re going to hear about it. However, while Fournette may have not been too happy, there was a reason for why his rating may have been lower than he expected. Madden is a results oriented game and they can’t just project what they think is going to happen. They have to react to what they’ve seen, and even though Fournette was coming off a strong rookie season, his body of work was only that, a rookie season.

“It really depends on the body of work that we have available to us our stance for the younger players especially the rookies has been prove it.” Oldenburg says. “It’s kind of like how in video game production we have this saying, pitch it, perform it, and prove it and it’s really no different for rating players. If you don’t have a long body of work, we’re not going to overreact… We’re going to need to see it over multiple years.”

Of course, for developers like Oldenburg, the goal is to create the most accurate ratings possible. For the rest of EA it’s about taking those ratings and promoting them in ways that are fun and interesting. While partnering with ESPN on ratings week is one way, another is to celebrate the truly great players. That’s how something like the 99 Club was born, an exclusive group of players that are either rated or were once rated a 99 in Madden.

“We saw a lot of commentary on social with the athletes debating over who should actually get [a 99,]” said Fraler. “And to help shine a light on these guys that are part of the inaugural class each year we decided to take it up a notch.”

“By and large you’re going to need multiple years of doing it at the highest level against the best competition…We very closely pay attention to individual matchups, and who these guys are playing on a weekly basis,” Fraler said. “And so if you look at Davante Adams, you know, over the course of last year and even the previous year it didn’t really matter who was covering him he was still very effective. Nobody really was able to take him away even the best corners and so that speaks volumes as well…But, you know, ultimately, if you’re a fan of football or fan of Madden, and in most cases, both, I think we all have a pretty good sense of who really belongs in the 99 Club, each and every year.”

Would EA’s developers like it if everyone just agreed with their ratings and called it a perfect video game? Absolutely, but everyone knows that no matter how accurate the game actually is there will always be people disagreeing with those ratings. Especially players. That’s where ESPN comes in. To join that conversation, because at the end of the day these ratings are just another form of debate as we wait to see actual football games being played.

“It’s not just about how an individual player react to his rating, whether it’s where he thinks it should be.” says Tennant. “Whether it’s not high enough, or whether it’s too low, it’s also about once that player reacts, there’s then the domino effect of the fans reacting to the players reaction. So this in essence becomes a communal experience. And that’s what we’re all about. We think Madden ratings week is a communal experience and it’s a chance to bring players and fans together to have intense debate about what a player was able to garner in terms of a rating from Madden.”

Lil Nas X’s Dad Slams DaBaby’s Homophobic Rolling Loud Comments: ‘Bruh Sit Down’

As more fans, supporters, and peers of DaBaby weigh in on the homophobic comments he made during his Rolling Loud set, a new voice has joined the conversation to admonish the North Carolina rapper for his words: that of Lil Nas X‘s father Robert Stafford, who posted his response on Instagram. As Lil Nas X is one of the more prominent queer artists in entertainment today, it seems Mr. Stafford won’t remain silent on an issue that so closely pertains to his son.

Posting a photo of DaBaby posing with Lil Nas X at an awards show, he captioned the photo, “Bruh sit down you had your time.” Indeed, DaBaby has been one of the most popular and bestselling rappers of the last two and a half years, so his platform is massive — and that’s why the way he chose to use it was so irresponsible.

While DaBaby later defended himself on Instagram, saying, “What me and my fans do at the live show don’t concern you n****s on the internet,” the problem is that you can’t just say, “What I do for the live show is for the audience at the live show.” For one thing, the show was live-streamed across the internet for the world to see, and for another, DaBaby clearly doesn’t seem to be considering the effect that his words can have, whether intended and unintended.

When he says “Fellas, if you ain’t sucking dick in the parking lot,” that’s anti-gay rhetoric that has been used to justify committing horrible acts of violence against queer people. When he says “If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS, or any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases, that’ll make you die in two to three weeks,” that further stigmatizes people who are living with STDs while also spreading misinformation that can put people at risk.

And when he tries to defend himself by saying “the fans at the show were okay with it,” he betrays a critical lack of understanding of cause and effect, makes unwarranted assumptions about who is in the crowd and how they feel about what he said, and discounts the feelings of anyone who tuned into the live-stream only to hear themselves denigrated by his attempt to hype the crowd.

Maybe someone close to him can pull him aside and explain all this, but from what we’ve seen that won’t happen. That’s a shame because it shouldn’t be on “n****s on the internet” with famous gay sons to teach a grown man how to behave with some basic human decency.

Biz Markie Pops Up On Multiple ‘Billboard’ Charts As Fans Revisit His Music After His Death

About ten days ago, rapper Biz Markie passed away at 57 years old. Although he hadn’t released a new album since 2003’s Weekend Warrior, Markie remained a beloved pop culture figure over the past few decades. After his passing, as tends to happen with deceased musicians, fans started revisiting his music, which led to some new Billboard chart appearances for Markie.

The rapper made his debut on the Comedy Albums chart this week with his 1994 compilation album Biz’s Baddest Beats, which is No. 2 on the chart dated July 31, behind Bo Burnham’s Inside (The Songs). Additionally, his iconic single “Just A Friend” (which appears on Biz’s Baddest Beats but was originally included on the 1989 album The Biz Never Sleeps) has re-entered this week’s Digital Song Sales chart at No. 18. That’s thanks to 5,000 song downloads, which is an increase of 2,991 percent from the previous week.

Markie representative Jenni Izumi previously confirmed his passing, saying, “It is with profound sadness that we announce, this evening, with his wife Tara by his side, hip hop pioneer Biz Markie peacefully passed away. We are grateful for the many calls and prayers of support that we have received during this difficult time. Biz created a legacy of artistry that will forever be celebrated by his industry peers and his beloved fans whose lives he was able to touch through music, spanning over 35 years. He leaves behind a wife, many family members and close friends who will miss his vibrant personality, constant jokes and frequent banter. We respectfully request privacy for his family as they mourn their loved one.”

Sasami Covered Daniel Johnston’s ‘Sorry Entertainer’ And Shared A Truly Chaotic Music Video

Los Angeles performer Sasami ,who recently covered System Of A Down’s “Toxicity,” has shared a new cover: Daniel Johnston’s song “Sorry Entertainer.” While the original was super-bare — mostly just strummed out on an out-of-tune acoustic guitar — this version is exponentially heavier, full of muddy guitars and a very metal solo. There’s also a deeply chaotic new music video, which was directed by comedian and actress Patti Harrison (Together Together, Shrill, I Think You Should Leave) and Alan Resnick.

Here’s what Sasami had to say about her choice to cover “Sorry Entertainer.”

“I made my last album when I was in a very emotionally vulnerable and tender place, but after a couple years of touring those same subtle, more sensitive songs, the live show became louder and more volatile. A bit before the pandemic took hold I was really getting back into metal and nu metal, so a couple months into quarantine I made an acoustic version of the System of a Down song ‘Toxicity.’ My sadness ripened into anger throughout 2020, and deeper into it I started experimenting with a heavier palette and decided to perform the inverse exercise of metallicizing an acoustic song. ‘Sorry Entertainer’ is my take on mixing the desperation of being a hopeless and powerless artist and the extremely powerful sounds of a metal band. Like giving a toddler a flamethrower… or a fullstack.”

Check out Sasami’s rendition of “Sorry Entertainer” above.

Sasami is out now via Domino. Get it here.

Fans Compare Halle Bailey To Solange After She Fiercely Defends Her Sister Chloe From An Online Troll

It’s natural that sister act Chloe X Halle draws comparisons to Beyonce since they’re signed to the pop queen’s management company Parkwood Entertainment. However, today, they’re drawing a different sort of comparison after younger sister Halle Bailey fiercely defended her older sister Chloe from a Twitter troll’s criticism, reminding fans of Beyonce’s own younger sister Solange’s staunch support of Beyonce.

Paying a backhanded compliment to the elder Bailey sister, the Twitter comment read, “I feel like Chloe Bailey is cute but y’all be overhyping shawty.” When Halle caught wind of the offending tweet, she responded sweetly, “Girl, let’s not start. Be blessed!! God loves you too!!!” And although the words — and the accompanying collection of angelic and shushing emojis — came across as “nice,” the Little Mermais star thinly veiled the implied threat behind them: Don’t start none, won’t be none. The offending tweet was apparently deleted and the original poster locked their account.

The banter instantly set fans buzzing, shooting “Halle” onto Twitter’s trending topics, and prompting fans to recall the bond between the Knowles sisters and Solange’s method of defending her sister. Of course, in that instance, rather than exchanging words with the offending party, Solange resolved to speak with her hands, resulting in the infamous elevator confrontation with Jay-Z and a half-dozen bars on the next three projects from Beyonce and Jay-Z.

Check out more responses from fans below.

5 Things We Learned From Team USA Women’s Basketball’s Win Over Nigeria

Team USA women’s basketball’s first Olympic group stage game felt eerily similar to their subpar exhibition games. The Americans beat Nigeria, 81-72, but the margin was way too close for comfort. Turnovers and a lack of chemistry were noticeable for the full 40 minutes save for an explosive 23-0 second-quarter stretch, and the game never felt completely theirs. That’s despite Nigeria missing three stars it’d hoped to have in Nneka Ogwumike, Chiney Ogwumike, and Elizabeth Williams.

It’s way too soon to panic, and Team USA is still the favorite by far to win the gold medal. But let’s talk about what we learned from their first Olympic game.

1. A’ja Wilson is unstoppable in the post

This is an important one. While most of the first-time American Olympians played a smaller role against Nigeria, Wilson was the star. Her 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting were a game-high and her six offensive rebounds (13 total boards) helped bail out some ugly halfcourt possessions. The 24-year-old reigning WNBA MVP was ready for the moment which is a great sign for Team USA’s current run and future appearances.

It is noteworthy to point out Wilson found a ton of her success playing as a small-ball big. Dawn Staley starts Wilson next to Brittney Griner, but because they operate the same space, she’s prone to drawing a second help-defender. We’ll see if Team USA makes any adjustments going forward and staggering their bigs a bit more.

2. Diana Taurasi’s return was crucial

Taurasi missed all three exhibition games with a hip injury, and also missed 10 WNBA games to a fracture in her sternum. Getting back on the court in time for the Olympics was always the expectation but when and how she’d look were question marks. The good news is Taurasi started and looked sharp from the field. She wasn’t hesitant to shoot and scored 10 points on six shots (hitting two 3-pointers), and helped kickstart the offense for Team USA after a nervy start to the game.

Getting the leading scorer in WNBA history back into the lineup was a must for the Americans. Taurasi will never struggle to get a jumper off.

3. Nigeria’s full-court trap bothered USA way more than it should have

It was tough to watch how often Team USA struggled to get the ball past halfcourt. Credit Nigeria’s tenacity on made buckets and defensive rebounds, but the Americans really, really had problems running in transition. They turned the ball over 25 times!

Going forward, the team’s bigs may have to take a few dribbles before searching for a guard — or at least start throwing pass-fakes. Keeping the ball high can also aid referees in calling fouls, but the sloppiness has to go as competition ramps up. They’ve turned the ball over 63 times in their last three games.

4. This team has a lot of work to do

Few parts of this game felt great. Nigeria made a late fourth-quarter run to cut the deficit to single digits in the final three minutes. If that felt odd, it’s because it hasn’t happened in a while. The 2016 team had a cohesiveness that allowed the Americans to go 8-0 and win by an average of 38.5 points. No game was closer than 26 points. This was the first single digit win for Team USA since 2004 against Russia.

Hopefully, over the next week, America finds its rhythm. It’s only going to get harder from here.

5. This was win No. 50 in a row for USA

We’re tough on this team because we expect so much from them, but this was the Americans’ 50th straight win in Olympic play which is a wild achievement worth celebrating. We’ll see if they can keep the streak alive for seven more games and win a seventh straight gold.
