Arnold Schwarzenegger uses the perfect analogy to explain ‘real freedom’ to anti-maskers

There is a big, gaping hole in the center of the belief that refusing to wear a mask or get vaccinated is a patriotic expression of the personal freedoms we enjoy as Americans.

Sure, you’re free to do as you wish, but the fastest way for people to invite tyranny into their lives is to forget that freedom is predicated on responsibility and accountability.

Refusing to wear a mask in a place where COVID-19 is likely to spread puts yourself and others at risk. Refusing to get vaccinated only promotes the spread of the virus. The longer this pandemic goes on, the more likely it is that freedom-loving people will be subjected to punitive restrictions from lawmakers and businesses seeking to crack down on those who aren’t being accountable.

Freedom must be accompanied by accountability or society quickly becomes uncivilized and that’s a fertile breeding ground for authoritarianism.

Actor and former Republican California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger perfectly explained this delicate balance on Monday in an interview with CNN’s Bianna Golodryga and former National Security Council staffer Alexander Vindman.

He blamed the continuation of the pandemic on those who are living in denial.

“A year and a half later, we are still in a mess and there are still people living in denial,” Schwarzenegger said. “There are still people that don’t believe in masks, there are still people out there who say, ‘Well, we don’t have to do social distancing,’ and all this kind of stuff.”

He explained that a big problem is that people have an immature grasp of what freedom really means.

“The only way we prevent it is we get vaccinated, we wear masks, we do social distancing, washing your hands all of the time, and not just to think about, ‘Well, my freedom is being kind of disturbed here.’ No, screw your freedom. Because with freedom comes obligations and responsibilities,” he said.

The “Terminator” star used an analogy involving stoplights that everyone can understand.

“You cannot just say, ‘I have the right to do x, y, and z,’ when you affect other people. That is when it gets serious. It’s like, no different than a traffic light. They put the traffic light in the intersection so someone doesn’t kill someone else by accident. You cannot say, ‘No one is going to tell me that I’m going to stop here, I’m going to go right through it.’ Yeah, then you kill someone else, and it is your doing. It is the same thing with the virus. You cannot go and not put the mask on because when you breathe you can infect someone else, and you can infect someone that then gets sick and may die.”

Those who doubt that freedom without responsibility leads to authoritarianism should look no further than recent history. Over the past year and a half, Americans have had to sacrifice a lot of their personal freedom because of a virus that thrives on a lack of accountability.

Those who truly love liberty should realize that we’re at a tipping point where the best way to persevere it is to fight back with accountability instead of defiance.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Thinks It’s No Big Deal That Hospitals Across America Are Overflowing With Dying COVID Patients: ‘We Can’t Live Forever’

As Covid cases continue to surge across the United States, and more and more hospitals report staff and bed shortages, Marjorie Taylor Greene would like to remind people of one little thing: we’re all going to die one day.

The QAnon-loving GOP representative, who has spent much of this year bellyaching about wearing masks on Capitol Hill and claiming that questioning her vaccination status violated her HIPAA rights, addressed the devastating toll the new Delta variant has had on hospitals around the country in an unsurprisingly heartless way. Greene went on a conservative daytime talk show to share her thoughts on media reports detailing the dire situation many healthcare facilities are facing as unvaccinated Covid patients continue to flood emergency rooms and take up space in the ICU.

“I’ve talked to local hospitals in my state,” Greene said after some fearmongering about what an FDA approval might mean for vaccine mandates. “Yes, the waiting rooms get full, but guess what? The waiting rooms are full of all kinds of things, not just Covid.”

Greene went on to list what a few of those things might be: car accidents, cancer, other illnesses, trauma. Hypothetically, a child who got a marble wedged too far up his nose might be there too. Her point is this, people: humans are walking accident magnets, so we should just throw in the towel now and not count on doctors and nurses to help us. No really, that’s Greene’s actual advice for anyone worried that an increase in Covid patients might mean they won’t have a bed should an unexpected health emergency strike.

“Everyone needs to get back down to common sense,” the woman who blamed Jewish people for creating space lasers unironically said. “We’re human. We can’t live forever. We’re going to catch all kinds of diseases and other viruses.”

Naturally, Twitter was happy to drag her plague-welcoming self, though she probably won’t see it since the platform just suspended her for spreading more vaccine misinformation.

Is This $200 Bourbon Whiskey Worth It? We Tried It To Find Out

Michter’s has been killing the high-end whiskey game for a while now. Their 20 and 25-year releases are some of the most sought-after bottles of bourbon on the market (no wonder they keep showing up in Billions). While scoring sips from those super-exclusive bottles is rare, you can get your hands on a Michter’s 10 Bourbon a little more easily. That said, it is a pricy proposition — with a price tag of $150 to $200, depending on which liquor store you’re buying your whiskey from.

To be clear, $150 is a lot to spend on a single bottle of bourbon. There’s no getting around that. Unless you’ve got funny money, it’s always fair to interrogate whether that level of investment is even worth it. In fact, that’s exactly what we’re going to try and answer today — by looking at what’s in the bottle, testing the juice for ourselves, and rating where it lands against our other favorite 2021 releases.

If this bottle feels like your vibe (and price range), click on the price below to try a bottle for yourself.

Michter’s Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 10 Years Old — Barrel No. 21D1209

Zach Johnston

ABV: 47.2%

Average Price: $200 ($150 MSRP)

The Whiskey:

The juice in this bottle is a little under wraps. Michter’s is currently distilling and aging their own whiskey, but this is still sourced. The actual barrels sourced for these single barrel expressions tend to be at least ten years old with some rumored to be closer to 15 years old. Either way, the juice goes through Michter’s bespoke filtration process before a touch of Kentucky’s iconic soft limestone water is added, bringing the bourbon down to a very crushable 94.4 proof.

Tasting Notes:

The nose opens with subtle notes of soft wood and worn leather next to light touches of dark berries, orange oils, egg nog spice, and a slight toffee sweetness. The palate starts off equally soft with something more akin to maple syrup sweetness which then leads into a rush of berry brambles. The mid-palate hits on a bit of dark spice, vanilla tobacco, and dark cacao… maybe espresso?… bitterness. The finish leans into a dry-yet-almost-sweet oak with a touch of an almond shell and dry grass coming in at the very end.

The real beauty is in the softness of the taste. There are no rough edges whatsoever and the whole sipping experience is like a silken dream. The soft limestone water does help the drinkability without making it feel thin. And while this isn’t an ABV bomb that’ll leave you burning, it’s not meant to be. This is the epitome of a slow-sipping bourbon with real depth.

The Bottle:

Michter’s heavy-duty bottles have become centerpieces on many a bar cart. This bottle stands tall and has a wax seal that’s actually a breeze to open (compared to way too many that aren’t). Overall, this is an eye-catching bottle from top to bottom.

Bottom Line:

This continues to be one of the most drinkable high-end bourbons on the market. It’s shockingly easy to sip without water or ice. Though, a drop or two of water or a single rock will help the deeper flavors of the bourbon come out to play.

Is it worth the price? Yes, I believe it is (assuming you like bourbon enough to even want this bottle). This is a centerpiece bottle that lives up to the hype without getting ridiculous with its price. Trust us, there are bottles that cost five, six times this much that can’t compete with its complexity.

Ranking:

98/100 — This dram continues to be a high-water mark in bourbon.

Mike Lindell Made A Proofless Accusation About Being ‘Attacked’ At His Symposium, And He Now Blames Antifa For Ruining The Event

No one’s quite sure what’s going on with Mike Lindell. I’m not even sure that Mike Lindell knows, but he’s plugging away regardless in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at his so-called “Cyber Symposium” that was forecast to last 72 hours. Things started off disastrously with the MyPillow guy (baselessly) claiming that his event had been hacked, and the whole thing descended into batsh*ttery from there. The vibe has not improved, given that he’s been ranting about “packet captures” (still with no proof), and fellow conspiracy-theorist Steve Bannon (who was podcasting from the event) apparently turned on his pal for failing to “bring the receipts.”

The last day of the symposium didn’t go well, either, with Lindell scrambling offstage once he received unwanted news over his Dominion lawsuit, after his biggest “expert” on the panel admitted that there was no proof of the Big Lie having any basis in truth. Well, the absence of proof continues because Lindell has now claimed that he was “attacked” on Thursday night in Sioux Falls. Naturally, he didn’t provide proof of this alleged incident, nor does he appear to have filed a police report. He appears to be flustered while relating his latest claim, and I guess he believes that “antifa” is chasing him?

Later during the symposium, Lindell’s head of security pushed another conspiracy that makes zero sense. He’s claiming that fraudulent (?) “press badges” were being passed around and that “agitators” are after Lindell.

If you expected any of this to earn a lick of rationality, you will be sorely disappointed. Lindell is now blaming “antifa” for how terribly his symposium has gone for the past three days. Are these 72 hours over yet? The MyPillow guy desperately needs to use his own product and get some rest.

Lil Nas X Says He Had To Hire Security After ‘Montero’ Came Out

In a new cover interview with Variety, Lil Nas X admitted that he began feeling unsafe after the single and video for “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” was released last March. The music video, for context, features the openly gay rapper giving Satan a lap dance, which had a lot of conservative pundits in an uproar.

Circling the subject of homophobia in the rap community, Nas told Variety, “The honest truth is, I don’t want to speak on a lot of the homophobia within rap because I feel like this is a very dangerous playing field. It’s more for my own safety rather than anything else.” When pressed for detail, Nas admitted that he decided to hire security after someone chased his car. “There was literally someone who chased my car a few days after that video came out, yelling, ‘F*ck you!’ or something. And that’s when I actually started getting security […] I feel like it couldn’t be a coincidence.”

That said, Nas certainly has a fan in Sir Elton John, who told Variety that the rapper is “a hero of mine,” adding, “Lil Nas X is a bold and brave provocateur who’s making amazing and inspiring music. He’s pushing the boundaries of urban music by wholeheartedly embracing his sexuality and visually projecting that celebration out into the world.”

John continued: “Historically, there has been a lot of homophobia in the hip-hop world. DaBaby’s recent recent damaging comments about the LGBTQ community and people living with HIV/AIDS clearly demonstrate that there is still so much education and work to be done.”

Stephen Lang Says He Wept After Reading The Script For ‘Avatar 5’ (Yes, You Read That Number Correctly)

While promoting the upcoming release of Don’t Breathe 2, Stephen Lang made a huge jump into the future by touting the script for Avatar 5. As previously reported, much like he did in the first film, Lang will be playing the villain in all four of the Avatar sequels, which director James Cameron has already written and shared with the actor, who wasn’t afraid to admit that he got emotional after reading the final story. Via Collider:

“When I finished the last script, I was weeping. I just thought it was so beautiful. Yeah, the final script because he’s telling a great, great story, an original story, a beautiful, beautiful story, and I was just incredibly moved by it. I hope and I trust and believe that audiences will be, too, because one of the things that he does really, really well is he moves it from the page to the stage in a way that that is very literal. You know what I mean? You really see it. What you read is what you get from him, I think, and more.”

Of course, it’s hard not to feel like Lang might be getting a tad overzealous, considering it’s been a long journey to get Avatar 2 into theaters. After several delays, the film didn’t start production until 2017, and it’s still not set to hit theaters until December 2022, a full 13 years after the original was released.

However, Cameron revealed back in September 2020 that Avatar 2 is 100 percent complete, and Avatar 3 is 95 percent done, so that’s an encouraging sign that Avatar fans could see all four sequels hits theaters before 2040. Fingers crossed.

Kulture Is Blowing Cardi B’s Fortune On ‘Roblox’

Roblox, for those who don’t know, is an immensely popular game. It’s been around since 2006, but it’s really taken off in recent years. As of May 2021, there are about 200 million active monthly Roblox players. Furthermore, it was estimated in mid-2020 that over half of all US kids under the age of 16 were playing Roblox. It’s also popular in the Cardi B/Offset household, as their daughter, Kulture, is apparently spending a ton of money on the game.

On Twitter today, Cardi joked (or perhaps not) that if she ever finds herself broke, Kulture’s Roblox spending habits will have been the cause: “If I ever go broke is not because of jewelry, cars or purses it’s because of Roblox [crying emojis] Like I need a discount or a gift card for that game cause my kid be running it up [money emojis].”

Kulture isn’t the only one spending on Roblox: In May, it was reported that over the previous financial quarter, Roblox had $387 million in revenue, which was up 140 percent from a year ago. Also in that quarter, Roblox had 42.1 million daily active users and overall, users spent 9.7 billion hours on the platform. Last year, some of those hours were spent in Lil Nas X’s virtual concert.

Cardi B is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

A ‘Grand Theft Auto’ Trilogy Remaster Is Reportedly In The Works

The Grand Theft Auto franchise is one of the most popular titles in not only video games but in all of fictional media. Developed by Rockstar, the crime drama series has set multiple sales records and their most recent title, Grand Theft Auto V, is the most profitable piece of media ever. Of course, none of this could have happened without the success of what many fans have dubbed the “PlayStation 2 trilogy.”

Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas all released on the PlayStation 2 to massive success and it’s those three games that pushed the series into mainstream culture. The games made headlines for not only being brash and violent but also for the sandbox gameplay that is now a regular feature in so many other games. It’s hard to think about now, but before GTA took off the idea of being able to do whatever we wanted in an open world wasn’t the readily available feature it is today. Video games are a copycat industry and everyone wanted to copy what GTA was doing, but nobody has gotten close to emulating the same level of success.

While Rockstar isn’t known for remakes and remasters, rumors have been persisting for some time that remakes of the PS2 trilogy are in the works. On Thursday, Kotaku released a report that gave us our most conclusive evidence yet that these games are indeed in development. Kotaku reports that only do they plan to remaster these games, but they would like to port them across multiple platforms such as the Nintendo Switch. Yes, a Nintendo console might be receiving a Grand Theft Auto game. Something we haven’t seen since Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the Nintendo DS.

After months of rumors and speculation, Kotaku has learned from sources that Rockstar Games may be remastering three classic Grand Theft Auto games. Currently, it appears these games will be released later this fall for a multitude of platforms, including the portable Nintendo Switch.

According to these sources, Rockstar is actively developing remastered versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. All three of these games are being remastered using Unreal Engine and will be a mix of “new and old graphics.” One source who claims to have seen a snippet of the games in action said that the visuals reminded them of a heavily-modded version of a classic GTA title. The UI for the games are being updated too, but will retain the same classic style. No details were shared about gameplay, but Kotaku has been told these remakes are trying to stay true to the PS2-era GTA games as much as possible.

It’s interesting to see Rockstar might be remastering these games, because there technically isn’t a need to do that. Usually, when a company decides to remaster an older game it’s because they want to make an older game available again on new hardware. However, most of these original GTA titles have been ported numerous times and are readily available on modern consoles. Another reason a company might remaster an older game is because they want to reignite interest in a franchise that has long been dormant. However, GTA is still thriving and many fans have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of a Grand Theft Auto 6. The big reason would be money, not that Rockstar is short on cash, but no company is ever going to pass up on the opportunity to make an easy profit on something as huge as Grand Theft Auto.

Maybe all of this is just so Rockstar can get three extremely popular titles on a console like the Switch. Nintendo’s handheld home console has sold over 28 million devices , and it’s one of the few brands that doesn’t readily have GTA games on it. Whatever the reasoning, it will be fun to see what a modern take on some of those old games will look like. They say they want it to be as faithful to the original games as possible, but a small upgrade to some of the mechanics certainly wouldn’t hurt the series.

Polo G Says His Stolen Debit Card Was Used To Subscribe To OnlyFans

Not even world-famous rap stars are immune to identity theft, as Polo G just learned. The Chicago rapper may have recently had to dispute some suspect charges, according to a screenshot he posted to his Instagram Story. Polo received a text message from “BofA Security” showing a $26 charge to OnlyFans. Adding a caption to the screenshot, Polo wondered “Who TF got my debit card?”

Truthfully, though, probably no one. The “CCBill.com” link in the message text suggests he’s probably receiving some misleading advertising for a service that apparently alerts subscribers to suspicious activity — something most banks already do. It also appears to be a business-to-business service, so it could also mean that CCBill is processing transactions for whichever bank Polo uses. Either way, it doesn’t look like anyone actually made off with his money, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a reason for caution on his part.

Instagram

Generally speaking, you shouldn’t ever click a link from a text message. If the message purports to be from a service you already know you use, open the official app from your phone or go to the website from your browser to double-check. Lots of scam emails and texts feature alarming information, such as your account information is used or delivery is on the way, to get you to click links or call numbers in a panic, giving away login or other personal information in an effort to resolve a non-existent problem.

Of course, considering he recently bought a house for his mom bigger than his, Polo G likely has enough in his account that surprise charges are the least of his worries.
