Meek Mill Announces His ‘Expensive Pain’ Album By Unveiling Its Cover Art

It’s been nearly three years since Meek Mill released his last album, Championships. But that’s all about to change as the rapper has officially unveiled details about his upcoming LP, Expensive Pain.

Mill returned Wednesday to announce Expensive Pain is slated for an October 1 release. It’s set to feature the rapper’s recent singles “Sharing Locations” with Lil Baby and Lil Durk and his track “Blue Notes 2,” a collaboration with Lil Uzi Vert.

Mill’s Expensive Pain artwork is a commissioned collage piece by New York-based artist Nina Chanel Abney, an abstract artist known for exploring the intersection of race, gender, pop culture, homophobia, and politics in her work. The cover art is a collage of the finer things in life, including yachts, money, nice cars, and several women, all centered around a representation of Mill shedding a tear.

The announcement of Expensive Pain arrives shortly after Mill was given the Nelson Mandela Changemaker Award for his social justice work with his REFORM alliance. It marked the first time a rapper has received the award, and Mill celebrated the achievement with a freestyle.

See a behind-the-scenes video of the making of Mill’s Expensive Pain album artwork above.

Expensive Pain is out 10/1 via Maybach Music/Atlantic. Pre-order it here.

Meek Mill is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Winemaker David Choi Breaks Down The TikTok Wine Scene And Shares Bottle Recommendations

Even in the gatekeeper-filled world of drinks, wine has always felt extra gatekeep-y. “These reds go with that. Those reds go with this. Don’t ever pair white wines with this or that!” You wouldn’t be the first person to roll their eyes and want to shout “shut up already and let me drink!” at a wine snob.

While knowing the basics does provide a foundation to work from (which is true of any craft — food, drink, or otherwise), wine is so drastically varied that it feels virtually impossible to know or follow all the “rules.” And starting from scratch can be incredibly daunting. You need trusted, accessible voices to show you the ropes. Voices like winemaker and budding TikTok wine star David Choi — who offers a whole lot of guiding and no gatekeeping.

Choi wants you to love wine like he does. But more importantly, he wants you to love wine the way you want to. He’s not interested in what’s “right” nearly so much as he’s interested in “what works for you.” To say that the wine world needs energy like that is an understatement.

Choi makes wine for a living in Napa Valley in California (Magna Carta) and the Loire Valley in France (Angel Falls). His credentials are exemplary. It would have been very easy for him to fall into that same gatekeeping aspect of wine snobbery that’s pervasive in wine media and reviewing. But that’s just not his jam. Instead, Choi offers insights into inexpensive wine choices that manage to hold their own with much more expensive bottles, along with practical pairing ideas. It’s a devilishly simple strategy but it’s also a much needed one.

We got a chance to jump on a call with Choi recently and talk about his love of wine, what wines he thinks you should try, and why the juice is so beloved by so many. It was an enlightening conversation that got a little philosophical at the end, much like any conversation once you reach the last few sips from a fine bottle of wine.

Tell us how your first fell in love with wine.

I first got into wine back, basically, at our family table and that’s sort of how it started. We didn’t grow up generally drinking a lot of wine, but we would always have it for special occasions. So I grew up probably more smelling the wine than drinking it. I was still under 21 at the time, but my parents and family brought me up in that culture of learning a little bit about wine and what makes it a little different, the nuances of it, the aromas, things like that.

So for me, wine is always about the experience. It’s not just enjoying a glass of wine, it’s about who you’re with … the foods it’s paired with. Even today, every time we go out or do dinner or we’re around friends and family and we’re enjoying some wine with our dinner, it always brings me back to that feeling when I was younger of having all my uncles and aunts and relatives all around and we’re enjoying food and wine. It brings me back to that time.

That’s wonderful. What was the “ah-ha!” bottle of wine for you where you knew that it was more than just something to enjoy around the family table?

It was a Bordeaux that we had. I think it was for my father’s birthday and it was at a steakhouse. It was generally where everyone enjoys wine, gets a steak with a Bordeaux or a big red. Obviously, before I’ve had a lot of steaks but this moment was … it just worked so seamlessly and sort of melted. It had that combination where I was like, “Oh! Now I really know what people are saying.”

It hit with the fats of the meat and it was just the perfect moment for me.

Nice! That leads towards my next question. In food and drink, wine especially, you have these entrenched notions of the protocol. Big red wines with red meat. White with white fish, et cetera, et cetera. How important do you think those old school rules are in 2021 or do you feel they’ve always been malleable?

I think it sets a foundation, right? So it’s a go-to that you know is always going to work. For someone like myself, I like trying new experiences. I like to try things that may not work or that may not be by the book. Not all pieces of meat are the same, so one can go with something lighter, like a Burgundy or something else entirely. I like a lighter style red with a fish and that’s perfectly fine as well. It’s really exposing yourself and experimenting and experiencing these different pairings and seeing what you really like. Plus, as your palate evolves, you want new experiences. I think it’s fun. To be honest, though, not every pairing works. So should I just drink this glass of wine by itself or should I just have this meal by itself?

But it’s fun when you do get to pair different things. We shot content with Hot Cheetos and a Riesling recently. Going into it, I was like, “We’re just having fun.” It was just something that we wanted to try, but that paired really, really well for me and I was like, “Wow. This is something I would go back to. This is something I would recommend!”

That’s what I dig about your TikTok and your whole vibe: It’s about experimentation, sure, but also going with the flow and finding something good and admitting when it’s not. One of my favorite examples is with seafood where you’re so drilled with the dogma of crisp white wines with fish or seafood. Then when I was in Sicily a couple of years ago and, man, you get these beautiful volcanic grown reds that are a little hefty and you’re eating it with squid ink pasta and it’s just the most perfect pairing you could ever imagine.

It’s absolutely beautiful. When it goes well, you just know it. Your mouth tells you. Your senses tell you that it’s perfect and it has to do with where you’re at as well.

Absolutely.

If you’re here, it may not have that. You may not get that same sense of that same feeling that you would when you were in Sicily.

David Choi

So let’s talk a little bit about your TikTok. Let’s face it, the world of wine is very gatekeep-y. You’re the antithesis of that. What do you feel you’ve learned about wine through reviewing wines on TikTok? How has it expanded your knowledge?

It’s been great. Being in Napa and producing my own wines here and out in the Loire Valley in France, I don’t get to taste huge amounts of varying wines otherwise. It’s been many, many years since I was at the retail store where I was tasting hundreds of wines every week. And now it brought me back to that time where I get to taste and go back and see what’s going on and what people are producing. It’s been fun because most of it is value-driven. We do some of the higher-end stuff, but mostly it’s below $20, and mostly it’s below $15.

We want you to enjoy wine without having someone like myself come in and say, “You should only be drinking Burgundies of Bordeaux or Napa reds.” I wanted to come in with my knowledge and my experience and say, “Yeah, this is what you can find every day but these wines are at a much lower price and I enjoy them just as much and I think these pair really great with foods and whatnot.” And that has brought me back into the world of tasting wines again and I’m very grateful for everyone that’s enjoyed the content.

Why are Napa and Bordeaux so compatible when it comes to wine?

I would say comparatively they both have the best grapes in the world. Just seeing the quality and the care that everybody has for these grapes — because you can’t make a great bottle of wine without the grapes — that’s just number one. Those grapes are attended to seamlessly and perfectly in both places.

They are still different in a sense because the soils are different. The weather is different. We’re very fortunate in Napa to have very consistent weather during the day with the marine cooling. So it’ll be really cool in the mornings. But then during the afternoons and early evenings, it’ll get to be 95 or 100 degrees, and then it’ll drop back down to 60. So that combination for me in Napa is just perfect for growing the grapes that I need for a Magna Carta.

Let’s sort of step away from California and France for a minute, because there’s a whole world of wine out there. What would be somewhere completely unique that you would recommend to a new wine drinker as a region and then also as a varietal?

There’s a ton of great wine out there. I was very fortunate to have learned my chops in wine at a retail store that really developed my paleate. I would always recommend something from Italy. I think that there is a lot of great reds from Tuscany — especially Chianti — that are really underpriced right now. I think that you are seeing more come on the market.

I always go to, and I know we weren’t speaking about France but I love Beaujolais. It’s an all-year-round wine for me. I love a little bit of a chilled Beaujolais wine during the summer and, for me, Beaujolais also is a great food wine. It’s a little more elegant in style but it’s still a red that has the full expression of those grapes that you’re getting with the Gamay [grape]. That really makes it a great food wine. So that’s a wine that I enjoy all year long. But Italian wines are the best food wines. So anytime that you’re at a restaurant, I would always recommend them because I always know that it’ll be a great pairing for your dish.

David Choi

What are some hidden gems that really take you to the next level when you’re talking wine?

So if you started at Beaujolais, the next step that you would take up would be Burgundy, right? But actually, the other ones that I really love, would be to start in the Rhone Valley, with a Cotes du Rhone. And then you would evolve to a Chateau Dupa. From there you would go to the Northern Rhone, like some Syrah. I think that’s an evolution and I think those wines are really well underpriced and undervalued. There’s a ton of great stuff out there from the Rhone Valley.

What makes wine such a special part of our lives?

It’s the beauty of it. Wine for me is my heart. I wasn’t gifted with painting or being a lyricist or a poet. My art is through being able to create a great wine and that’s my passion. I love that. Every year is a little bit different. Our blends are slightly different every year.

And being able to bring that to everybody and have them enjoy that while seeing the faces and the enjoyment that they have and the experiences that they have is … everything. Especially in this day and age of where there are so many things are going on in the world that’s really tough, where you turn on the news and everything is bad. I just want to bring a little bit of enjoyment into your life for a few hours with your friends and family that you can enjoy before everybody has to go back into this really tough world that we live in now.

Paranoia Seems To Be Running Wild Amongst MAGAs Like Roger Stone That The Upcoming DC Rally For Jan. 6th Insurrectionists Is ‘A Setup’

As MAGA followers prepare to descend on Washington D.C. this weekend for a rally they’ve dubbed “Justice for J6,” one key figure who absolutely won’t be in attendance is Trump hypeman Roger Stone.

The political lobbyist and convicted felon gave an interview to Russia Today (via Mediaite) from his home in Florida on Wednesday where he made it clear he won’t be marching in D.C. with the rest of Trump’s cult members. In fact, when asked about the rally — which has been organized by a nonprofit led by former Trump campaign staffer Matt Braynard — Stone warned his fellow “patriots” that the event might not be above board.

“I don’t know a single person in the MAGA movement who’s going,” he said. “It’s a setup.”

Though Stone didn’t offer any proof of his theories, he doubled down on them, calling the rally “agitprop” and accusing the government of trying to lure MAGA supporters into the city.

“Here’s my suggestion,” he continued. “The people who will be there will all be working for the government. If there’s a single armed protester there, they’ll be working for the federal government. This is so obvious. Who would go there armed? Nice try.”

Now, this whole thing just reeks of the kind of paranoia we’ve come to expect from Trump and his cronies, but it’s worth noting Stone is actually cautioning people against attending the rally, which is billing itself as a march to remember the protestors who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6th. (Some have even called the event a “Justice For Babbitt” march, referencing the rioter Ashli Babbitt who was fatally shot while trying to breach the Senate Chambers.) Now sure, there’s no way for him to profit off the ignorance of Trump’s groupies this time but still, encouraging vengeful conspiracy theorists to stay home instead of bringing their guns to a city filled with millions of people during a pandemic is actually one of the better things Stone’s probably ever done.

He ended his talk about the march with this plea:

“Folks, I’m appealing to you,” Stone said. “Stay away. Stay safe. Stay in your homes and, by all means, never bring a firearm to the District of Columbia.”

So MAGAers, just this one time, maybe listen to Roger Stone? (Ugh.)

A Conservative Commentator Posits That Barack Obama Destroyed Rock And Roll Music

It may seem like everybody loves Barack Obama, but the former president certainly has his share of detractors; When he left the White House in 2017, his approval rating was 57 percent. So, a bit over half the country gave Obama a thumbs-up, while the rest of the nation didn’t share that enthusiasm. Obama’s detractors often try to blame shortcomings of American and global life on things he did before, during, and even after his presidency, and there’s at least one political commentator who thinks the former POTUS is responsible for the decline of rock music.

During the September 14 episode of Daily Wire Backstage, a roundtable discussion program from conservative news outlet The Daily Wire, Jeremy Boreing declared, “Rock ‘n roll’s over. You’re still talking about rock ‘n roll as if Barack Obama didn’t happen. Honestly – it’s for another day – Barack Obama destroyed rock ‘n roll.”

Michael Knowles chimed in in agreement before Boreing continued, “There was rock ‘n roll, then there was Barack Obama, now there’s no rock ‘n roll. Because rock ‘n roll was about white male angst, white male teenage angst.”

Ben Shapiro then interjected to acknowledge rock’s history of appropriation, saying, “And stealing a lot of its tropes from better Black music.” Boreing continued, “Barack Obama came along and said young white men aren’t allowed to have angst. They’re not allowed to, basically, express their dissatisfaction because they’re so toxic. And so, truly, rock ‘n roll just stopped.”

It may be worth noting that Obama has long given props to rock music and shown himself to be a fan. In just the summer playlist he shared in July, for example, he included songs by George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, Chicago, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Wye Oak, and Brandi Carlile. Obama also co-hosts a podcast with Bruce Springsteen, and the pair is even publishing a book together.

A Stalker Was Reportedly Arrested Outside Ariana Grande’s Home After Showing Up With A Knife

Unfortunately like many celebrities these days, Ariana Grande has to deal with a number of stalkers. That was the case this week when a frightening situation took place outside the Positions singer’s home that ended with an arrest.

According to a report from TMZ, 23-year-old Aharon Brown was taken into custody after showing up outside Grande’s Hollywood Hills home at 2 a.m. on Friday morning. Brown reportedly faced Grande’s security and demanded to be let in to see the singer. When Grande’s security refused Brown’s repeated requests and told him to leave, he reportedly threatened them by brandishing a knife. Security promptly called LAPD, who showed up on the scene and arrested Brown on felony charges.

TMZ’s report states it’s unclear whether or not the singer was actually at home when the incident went down, but her team did note they have filed a restraining order against Brown on Grande’s behalf. A judge allegedly granted Grande a temporary restraining order, which will be in effect until Brown’s trial.

This isn’t the first time Grande has had to file a restraining order against someone. Back in May 2020, the singer and her mother were both granted a five-year restraining order against a 20-year-old man who trespassed on her LA property. The man was reportedly able to get past security and was carrying a love letter addressed to Grande before being arrested on site.

The last song was “Return to Innocence” by Enigma. If you play the same song at the same time each night you grow to love it and appreciate the routine! Anything by Mrs Miller as well. Check her out, especially the covers of “Monday, Monday,” “Moon River,” and “Downtown.”

None of us have a single tattoo!

The Weeknd.

My parents being super nice to me and taking care of me until I could take care of myself! What a thankless task!

What’s one piece of advice you’d go back in time to give to your 18-year-old self?

Enjoy playing all these shows and all the fun stuff that happens to you and appreciate it you piece of shit. At least try and be happy!

What’s the last show you went to?

I went to see Catholic Action play in New York just before SXSW was meant to happen in 2020. Everyone was starting to freak out about Covid by that point. Everyone knew it was getting serious by that point.

What movie can you not resist watching when it’s on TV?

Old School. I ended up watching the last hour a few nights ago actually and it always seems to be on!

What would you cook if Obama were coming to your house for dinner?

Something really simple. I try to be a good cook but I just don’t get it. Salt, fat, acid, heat. I get too stressed cooking for people I don’t know. I make a decent pesto with basil from my garden. I think he’d appreciate that I grew that basil. Pesto pasta. And he better say he enjoyed it or I won’t be able to sleep for days.

Ren And Stimpy Are Joining The ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Clone ‘Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl’

Every update to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl feels more bizarre than the last one. We know exactly what it is — t’s a clone of Nintendo’s crossover fighting game, Super Smash Bros. — it’s just that seeing Spongebob duke it out with Nigel Thornberry, Leonardo, and CatDog is never not going to look weird. No amount of polish or quality analysis is going to fix that. Yet, it’s also incredible, and I can’t wait to play it.

Every time there’s a new update for the game, everyone rushes to see which classic Nickelodeon character is confirmed for the game next. We’ve gotten some gems like Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender and Powdered Toast Man from Ren & Stimpy. It’s pretty clear that while they’re going to try and get the big names on the roster, they’re not going to be afraid to pull some of the more obscure ones from the Nickelodeon universe as well. This is a good thing, especially if you’re the kind of person who will be excited to know that Ren & Stimpy are coming to the game.

The pair are serve as a combo character, meaning they will fight opponents. This is exactly how they should play, because it’s going to lead to funny moments like Stimpy using Ren as a weapon throughout fights. The trailer also featured them running over opposing enemies with a car and Stimpy licking them with his sandpaper tongue. They need to be weird, because that show was weird, and so far, the trailer has them playing the part.

The Nickelodeon games over the last few years have definitely not been of the highest quality, so the fact that every trailer of this game looks so good is really surprising! It’s even catching the attention of professional Smash Bros. players like Mang0.

Could this game be the next true esport? Probably not, but we’d love to be able to watch a professional Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl league somewhere down the line.

Amber Tamblyn Based Her ‘Y: The Last Man’ Character On Meghan McCain And The Joker

In a new interview that’s sure to go over well with a certain former The View host, Amber Tamblyn revealed the surprising inspiration for her Y: The Last Man character Kimberly Campbell Cunningham. In the FX series based on the critically acclaimed graphic novel series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, Kimberly is a conservative author and daughter of the president, who along with every man on the planet (save one), died in a mysterious event.

As Tamblyn explains it, the trauma from losing her father, husband, and three sons causes Kimberly to double down on her right-wing politics. So Tamblyn modeled her character after the closest real-world approximation she could find to a fire-brand daughter of a conservative dynasty: Meghan McCain.

Oh, and also the Joker. Gotta have the Joker in there. Via Entertainment Tonight:

Viewing Kimberly’s late father, President Ted Campbell, as a John McCain type, it only makes sense that Tamblyn drew inspiration from his daughter. “I pulled from Meghan [and] I pulled elements from a lot of different kinds of women for this character,” the actress explains, before revealing that she even turned to the Joker for inspiration. “Even though he’s not a woman, I pulled from the Joker for some of her looks.”

In a particularly damning quote, Tamblyn also said, “Kimberly’s entire identity has been built on her relationship to her three sons, to her husband, certainly to her father and his access to power,” which, yeah, sounds a whole lot like Meghan McCain. So far the Daily Mail‘s newest columnist has yet to react to being Tamblyn’s muse, but we wouldn’t put money on McCain being quiet about it. That’s not exactly her style.

New episodes of Y: The Last Man stream Monday on FX on Hulu.

‘Ted Lasso,’ Jean Smart, And, Uh, ‘The Golden Girls’ Cleaned Up At The 2021 TCA Awards

If the TCAs are any indication, Ted Lasso is going to have an Emmys night to “Believe” in.

The Apple TV+ series won three awards at the 2021 TCA Awards: Outstanding New Program, Outstanding Achievement In Comedy, and Program of the Year, beating Bridgerton, Hacks, I May Destroy for You, Mare of Easttown, The Queen’s Gambit (which feels like it was on seven years ago), The Underground Railroad, and WandaVision. The awards are selected by the Television Critics Association, an organization composed of 200 TV critics and journalists across the United States and Canada. I am not a member, otherwise this clip of a drunk Ewok doing the moonwalk before humping Al Roker’s leg would have won for an unprecedented 12th year in a row.

Other big winners include Jean Smart (it’s her summer and her fall; she can have the whole dang year) and I May Destroy You. The Golden Girls also received the Heritage Award, joining previous winners The Simpsons, Cheers, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Here’s the full list:

Individual Achievement In Drama: Michaela Coel (“I MAY DESTROY YOU,” HBO)
Individual Achievement In Comedy: Jean Smart (“HACKS,” HBO Max)
Outstanding Achievement In News and Information: “FRAMING BRITNEY SPEARS” (FX/FX On Hulu)
Outstanding Achievement In Reality Programming: TIE: “COUPLES THERAPY” (Showtime), “DEAF U” (Netflix)

Outstanding Achievement In Comedy: “TED LASSO” (Apple TV+)
Program of the Year: “TED LASSO” (Apple TV+)

Nick Saban Apparently Loves Deez Nuts Jokes After Marlon Humphrey Introduced Him Years Ago

Jordan Battle, a safety for the Alabama Crimson Tide, said something eyebrow-raising earlier this week: Nick Saban loves deez nuts jokes. Battle was asked during a press conference whether he has a favorite saying from Saban, which led to a truly delightful answer that appeared to get someone in the room to yelp.

“He’s always talkin’ about, ‘touch deez,’ or, you know, ‘suck on deez,’” Battle claims Saban loves to say.

This surprised plenty of folks, because Saban does not exactly seem like the kind of guy who laughs at much of anything, let alone jokes that formed in the darkest depths of Twitter. Saban has in the past been asked about his love of this specific joke, but there is still a pretty major question that exists: Why, exactly, is this a go-to for Nick Saban?

Source of all important college football information Lane Kiffin has the answer. Kiffin was Saban’s offensive coordinator for several years, and he has the backstory as to how he became aware of this joke format.

Humphrey addressed this but decided to sidestep Kiffin’s claim.

I would still like to know exactly what joke hooked Saban here, but Marlon Humphrey, thank you for your role in teaching Saban about deez nuts jokes.
