Ashanti Celebrates The Opportunity To Re-Record Her Self-Titled Debut Album: ‘It’s So Surreal’

Soon, Ashanti will find herself joining a list of artists that includes Taylor Swift and JoJo. The Grammy-winning singer recently announced plans to re-record her self-titled album ahead of its upcoming 20th anniversary. She revealed the news during an appearance on the Tamron Hall Show, where she also shared that she now owns the masters to the 2002 album.

“It’s so surreal,” Ashanti said while celebrating the news. “I have an amazing legal team, and I got my first record deal when I was 14 years old, so understanding and seeing how things have changed so much from then to now and conceptually understanding what you’re signing is so imperative, it’s so important nowadays. The fact that I’ll be able to re-record my first album, and put everything together.”

She continued, “It’s so humbling. It is such an honor. I’m so grateful. It’s such a blessing, you know, the fact that we are still here, we’re living through a pandemic, and these blessings are still coming in, it just makes me so happy again, so humbled and such a believer.” Ashanti concluded, “It’s such a blessing, you know, the fact that we are still here, we’re living through a pandemic, and these blessings are still coming in, it just makes me so happy again, so humbled and such a believer.”

The news comes after she made a surprise appearance during Fat Joe and Ja Rule’s Verzuz battle earlier this month. It marked the second time she was on the series, having previously gone up against Keyshia Cole earlier this year.

A Sneak Peek Clip From The ‘Chucky’ TV Series Shows The Killer Doll’s Messy Attempt At A Frog Dissection

Chucky, the killer doll with ginger hair and the voice of either Brad Dourif or Mark Hamill, has withstood a lot. Since 1988’s Child’s Play, he’s endured numerous sequels, undergone a drastic tonal shift, gotten a big screen revival, and spawned things like comics and even theme park attractions. His next step is TV. And a new look at the forthcoming SyFy show, simply entitled Chucky, unleashes him on a new kind of victim: a dead frog.

The show, which is due on SyFy and the USA Network starting October 12, revealed a new sneak peek clip, showing the serial killer-possessed doll suffering through the mundanities of suburban life. In this case, he’s in a biology class with the teenage boy who found him at a yard sale. It’s frog dissection time, and when the young charge proves reluctant to pierce a dead amphibian with a scalpel, Chucky is more than willing to (covertly) step up.

Chucky is set to arrive two years after 2019’s Child’s Play, which was a loose remake of the one that started it all, minus Dourif, who was replaced by Luke Skywalker himself. That film did middling business, which may be one reason why the show ignores it, choosing to follow the events of 2013’s direct-to-video Cult of Chucky. Dourif is back, too, and at some point another franchise biggie will return, too: Jennifer Tilly, who popped up in Bride of Chucky and helped pivot the series from horror with some laughs to camp with bits of wink-winky horror. The series backtracked on that a bit, so we’ll soon see what tack its small screen iteration takes.

You can watch the sneak peak clip in the video above.

Courtney Vandersloot’s Historic Night Led The Sky To A Game 1 Win Over The Sun

The first game of the 2021 WNBA Finals couldn’t have been any more thrilling. Despite the fact that the Connecticut Sun found themselves making headlines earlier in the day due to a trio of wins for individual regular season awards, most notably Jonquel Jones being named league MVP for the first time in her career, the team ended the evening in a 1-0 series hole after the Chicago Sky walked into Mohegan Sun Arena and won Game 1 in double overtime, 101-95.

While Candace Parker’s 22 points led the way for Chicago, Courtney Vandersloot etched her name in the history books with an 18 assist outing in the win. Vandersloot’s distribution was pristine all night, and by the time the dust settled, she managed to break the league’s single game playoff assist record, which was previously held by Sue Bird.

This is the second time in any game Vandersloot hit this assist mark — her 18 assists in a game in 2020 is the league’s regular season assist record, too. And she managed to do a whole heck of a more than set up her teammates on the evening, as she recorded a triple-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. It marked the second time in league history that someone got a triple-double in a playoff game, as the legendary Sheryl Swoopes did it back in 2005. For good measure, Vandersloot recorded four steals and a pair of blocks.

Parker, Allie Quigley (19 points), and Kahleah Copper (13) all hit double-digits in scoring for the Sky, with Parker chipping in six assists, five rebounds, two steals, and a block. Both Jonquel and Brionna Jones were magnificent for the Sun — the former went for 26 points and 11 rebounds, the latter has 22 and 10 with four steals — while Dewanna Bonner chipped in 13 and 10, but the Sun struggled to hit shots, as they went 34-for-90 (37.8 percent) from the field and 5-for-17 (29.4 percent) from three.

The good news for Connecticut, though, is that the team will get the chance to even the series up at home before things shift to Chicago for Game 3. The winners of their previous 14 games prior to Tuesday’s loss, the Sun will play host to the Sky on Thursday evening, with things slated to tip at 8 p.m. EST on ESPN2.

Ranking All Of Chipotle’s Proteins, Including The New Smoked Brisket

A key feature of Chipotle’s menu is also its biggest weakness: the fact that it lends itself to endless customization. Because you have the option to make your meal however you want, none of the food from Chipotle truly has an identity. Most fast food menus have a famous meal, an item you have to order if you’re visiting for the first time — the Popeyes’ chicken sandwich, Shake Shack’s Shack burger, Raising Cane’s chicken tenders, McDonald’s French fries… these are essential menu items.

Chipotle doesn’t have any of that. If you ask someone what they like from Chipotle, they’ll probably just say “I get a bowl,” or “I get a burrito,” they’re not going to say, “Well, personally I’m all about the barbacoa on a burrito with half a spoon of white rice, pinto beans and black beans, fajita veggies, corn, half a spoon of hot sauce, cheese, lettuce and a side of guacamole for extra dipping.”

So when we set out to review the Chipotle menu like we have the McDonald’s breakfast and burger menus, we hit a roadblock. It’s hard to say whether a burrito is better than a bowl when your burrito isn’t necessarily my burrito. Plus this is Chipotle we’re talking about, what even constitutes a bowl? You could skip the lettuce, ask for a bed of chips, steak, queso, beans, fajitas, corn, guacamole, sour cream, a sprinkling of cheese, and mild salsa and you essentially have nachos. Does endless variation make Chipotle’s menu unrankable?

They wish. Nothing is un-rankable. To do so, we simplified our approach and decided that instead of ranking menu items, we’d just rank each of Chipotle’s protein options to separate the good ones, from the ones that should probably never be ordered.

7. Sofritas

Dane Rivera

Calories: 150

Protein: 8g

I feel bad about ranking Chipotle’s only plant-based protein option last, but…it is what it is. I will say that when it comes to flavor, the sofritas aren’t half bad. They have a great blend of peppery and cumin-dominant flavors that really cut nicely through your meal and give you that savory meat vibe. If you’re a vegetarian, this is a great meat substitute, don’t feel bad about ordering it or think of it as an excuse to skip Chipotle entirely.

What I don’t like about the Sofritas is everything else.

First of all, they’re incredibly wet. So wet that they will soak through your tortilla, which can totally ruin your meal. Aside from the wetness, the sofritas also have a terrible mouthfeel, the tofu is really chunky and chewy to the point of distraction, and it becomes very obvious that you’re not eating meat. In a loaded burrito or bowl there are enough other ingredients going on that you aren’t going to notice that mouthfeel, but in something like a taco, you won’t be able to ignore it.

Perhaps more importantly, because the sofritas are also Chipotle’s least popular meat option, they are almost always serving old lukewarm Sofritas. That doesn’t do any favors to the experience.

The Bottom Line:

If you don’t abstain from eating meat, there is no reason to ever order the sofritas. It isn’t the flavor that’s the problem it’s the wet consistency and the awful rubbery mouthfeel that are the problems.

6. Carnitas

Carnitas

Calories: 210

Protein: 23g

I’ve heard people swear by the carnitas at Chipotle, and I’m not going to sit here and tell you that Chipotle carnitas are not “real” or “proper,” but these are without a doubt consistently the worst carnitas I’ve ever had. So if you love the carnitas, sorry, but you have bad taste in carnitas — you’re playing on my homecourt here and I’m telling you: not good.

Where to start with these things? They’re dry, over-salted, and so fatty-sinewy that you’ll constantly be picking sh*t out of your mouth because it’ll end up sticking around while you’ve already swallowed the rest of your food. What makes carnitas special is the slow-cooking, this helps the pork reach a level of tender juiciness that is downright orgasmic on the palate. Flavors of cumin, oregano, salt, and pepper are supposed to dance across the tongue with each bite.

Chipotle’s carnitas has none of that.

The juicy tenderness is replaced with a bone-dry texture that enables you to feel each strand of pork in your mouth as you chew through it. The earthy flavors of cumin and oregano are instead replaced with a small ocean’s-worth of salt. I’m almost amazed that Chipotle could fail at carnitas this hard, if you told me this was Taco Bell’s new meat, I’d believe it.

The Bottom Line:

When people say “Chipotle isn’t real Mexican food” it’s because they’re offended by this poor excuse for carnitas.

5. Guacamole

Dane Rivera

Calories: 360

Protein: 2g

Does guacamole count as a protein option at Chipotle? Not in the “protein” sense, no. But we’re using the phrase to mean: “main item featured in an entree” and in that sense, it certainly fits the bill. So what the hell, we’ve decided to include it!

People go nuts for Chipotle’s guacamole, and if you’re comparing it to Taco Bell and Del Taco guac, sure, it’s pretty good. But nothing worth obsessing over. This is pretty standard stuff at every Mexican joint in California, and if anything Chipotle goes a little heavy with the onion here.

Aside from the dominant flavor of red onions, we have some consistently ripe avocado here acting as our base, mixed with lime juice (a little too much — someone on Chipotle’s board must be heavily invested in lime groves), cilantro, and diced jalapeno bits throughout. The diced jalapeno is my favorite feature, it adds a nice subtle kick that lingers on the palate after each bite and leaves you wanting more. It’s a great trick, and I wish they would’ve focused more on the peppers than the onion, but I get that they’ve got to please the average consumer who probably can’t handle the spice.

The Bottom Line:

Chipotle’s guacamole is astoundingly consistent. I’ve yet to have a serving that tastes like it was using over or under-ripened avocados, and though this is more onion-dominant than I like, I’d still order a veggie burrito over getting the sofritas and carnitas — so we’re ranking this higher.

Even though it’s not really a protein option.

4. Steak

Dane Rivera

Calories: 150

Protein: 21g

Chipotle’s steak is probably the most frustrating meat option the chain has on offer. On the one hand, when it’s good it’s great — tender chunks of medium-cooked steak with a perfect caramelized outer and a simple seasoning blend of salt, black pepper, cumin, and finished with what I’m assuming is butter to help achieve that crunchy glaze. But when it’s bad — which, unfortunately, is pretty often in my experience — it’s grainy, chewy, and tough. An absolute chore to eat.

So my advice is to give the steak a good look when you’re ordering it, if it glistens with rising ribbons of steam like in the photo above, get it — it’ll be excellent, but if it looks like it’s been sitting around for a while and they’re about to change it up with a new batch, ditch it because you might as well be eating rocks.

The Bottom Line:

If it’s fresh, get it, but if it looks like it’s been sitting in the bin for far too long, trust your instincts. Because of its hit-or-miss quality, we’re sadly ranking this delicious option in fourth place.

3. Chicken

Dane Rivera

Calories: 180

Protein: 32g

Chipotle’s chicken doesn’t suffer from the same consistency issues that plague the steak. Even when the chicken has been sitting in the bin for a while, it’s still packed with flavor. The only thing you lose with time here is how hot the meat is, and considering you’re eating at Chipotle I’m just going to assume you don’t care about whether your food is hot or not. Because at Chipotle it rarely is.

Chipotle’s chicken is flame-grilled at the restaurant and features a flavor profile that is dominated by the smokey qualities of ancho chilis and the savory zest of adobo sauce. I have no doubt the restaurant spends a good amount of time marinating this meat. Because Chipotle uses grilled chicken thigh rather than breast, each bite is juicy and tender, never suffering from the dry tendencies of over-cooked white meat. If you’re wincing at the idea of dark meat over white, you must hate flavor. Just kidding (kind of), but if chewy fat generally keeps you away from ordering dark meat, that’s not a problem here. The meat is still remarkably lean, you almost can’t tell it’s dark meat aside from the fact that it’s so consistently tasty with each bite.

The Bottom Line:

Flavorful, juicy, and most importantly, consistent. It’s hard to get a bad serving of chicken at Chipotle. If this is your first time, this is your best meat for a positive experience overall.

2. Smoked Brisket

Dane Rivera

Calories: 360

Protein: 22g

Chipotle’s smoked brisket is the chain’s newest protein option, joining the menu permanently (as far as we can tell, based on Chipotle’s in-store signage) in late September. I’ve only had the smoked brisket on two occasions so I can’t speak to the overall consistency of how well the meat is prepared, but on both occasions it was satisfying. That doesn’t sound like it’s worthy of a number two spot, I get that, but the first time I tried this new option I was absolutely blown away. So blown away that I decided to put together this article, just so I could rave about this meat. On my second tasting… I got a bad batch. It was still good and still edible (unlike the bad steak) but nowhere near as good as the first time. That’s enough to knock this down a rank for me!

The Smoked Brisket is slow-smoked for 10-16 hours and features a mouthwatering mix of smokey and sweet flavor notes. It’s tender, with a smooth butter-like consistency in the chew, and is dominated by a mix of garlic, paprika, cumin, and various peppers, from black to chipotle. It’s not going to rival the best brisket at a BBQ joint, but in the fast food space, you’ll rarely find anything this tender and flavorful.

A definite winner in Chipotle’s line-up and welcome addition to the menu.

The Bottom Line:

If it’s fresh, grab this without thinking twice. On a good day, it’s Chipotle’s most flavorful meat option and has the best mouthfeel. On a bad day, it’s still good but not enough to blow your mind or lead you to want to come back. It’s definitely worth indulging your curiosity though.

1. Barbacoa

Dane Rivera

Calories: 170

Protein: 24g

Barbacoa has always been Chipotle’s best meat option, but it’s very close to being dethroned by the brisket. The strength of this meat is in its insanely tender texture — each bite bursts with juicy savory goodness. For this barbacoa, Chipotle uses shoulder-cut meat, (rather than the more traditional cabeza) which keeps it tender, helping to soak up Chipotle’s marinade, which it spends overnight bathing in. Putting in that extra time marinating really helps this meat soar above the rest of Chipotle’s options, and while I miss the silky sumptuous qualities that I’ve come to expect from traditional barbacoa, this comes way closer than I’d expect a national chain to ever get to the real thing.

The barbacoa is dominated by the earthy notes of oregano and cloves, I’m also getting a bit of bay leaf in there and Chipotle’s usual pepper and adobo-forward flavor. It works great in each of Chipotle meal form-factors, whether you’re crunching on tacos, putting together an epic burrito, or you’re looking for the best salad of your life.

The Bottom Line:

Chipotle’s most flavorful protein and almost as good as the traditional barbacoa you’ll get at a classic SoCal taqueria. Almost. Seriously, if you’ve ever left Chipotle thinking the chain is seriously lacking in flavor, you must not have tried the barbacoa yet.

Dennis Schroder Claims He ‘Never Had’ An $84 Million Contract From The Lakers ‘In Front Of Me’

Jokes were flying when Dennis Schroder signed a one-year deal for less than $6 million with the Boston Celtics. Schroder reportedly turned down a lucrative offer from the Los Angeles Lakers, worth as much as $84 million in total, before the veteran guard’s market seemingly dried up and he inked the pact with Boston. In mid-September, Schroder was seemingly self-aware in steering into the “fumbled the bag” jokes about his apparent contractual mishap but, on Monday, the 28-year-old was singing a bit of a different tune in saying that he did not, in fact, have that famed $84 million deal “in front of” him to sign.

“The Lakers told us we are not talking during the season, and at the end of the day, I never had that contract in front of me,” Schröder indicated to reporters at Media Day (via Boston.com). “That’s one thing. But they wanted to talk and at the end of the day, me and my agent decided not to sign their contract.”

Of course, this could be semantics about whether the deal was actually placed in front of him, but Schroder’s message didn’t seem to be that willingly turned down a deal of that size. Obviously, there is some potential gray area here and, without first-person knowledge, specifics are sometimes tough to come by. Still, the $84 million reporting has been quite strong throughout, and even if it was something shy of that, the contract Schroder ended up signing was a financial disappointment in comparison.

Fortunately, Schroder has operated under contracts with the Atlanta Hawks, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Lakers totaling more than $70 million, and he is set up pretty well. Schroder indicated that “money is not everything at all times” and he cited being “comfortable” in his employment situation.

“For me and my family, I signed a pretty good contract after my fourth year, and my family and myself, we’re going to be good,” Schroder said on Monday. “I’m 28 years old, and I’m still playing in the NBA for a long time.”

It will be interesting to see what kind of contract Schroder can land after this season, but he’ll have every opportunity to prove himself in Boston. The Celtics were able to land him on a bargain contract for what he has been able to produce, and there is a path to success for all parties involved in Boston.

Will Smith reveals what he’s learned from having an open relationship with Jada Pinkett Smith

A lot of pitfalls can come with having an open marriage. When a partner allows the other to stray it can create jealousy and ruin the ties that bind a couple together.

But some believe it can improve a marriage by allowing both partners to find temporary sexual fulfillment outside the relationship. That gives frustrated partners a chance to fulfill their needs without having to leave a marriage that’s satisfying otherwise.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith recently admitted they have experimented with an open relationship and it nearly ended them for good. The couple tied the knot in 1997 and have two children, son Jaden, 23, and daughter Willow, 20. Will also has a son Trey, 28, from his marriage to Sheree Zampino.

“The general consensus—among the lay public and professional marriage counselors alike—seems to be that” consensual non-monogamy (CNM) “can only lead to more harm than good in a marriage,” writes David Ludden Ph.D. in Psychology Today. “And yet, studies of couples actually engaged in CNM relationships find that these people report being just as happy in their marriages as strictly monogamous couples are—and they’re more satisfied sexually,” Ludden continues.

“Jada never believed in conventional marriage,” Will said in a recent interview with GQ. “Jada had family members that had an unconventional relationship. So she grew up in a way that was very different than how I grew up.”

The two came to the decision after having long discussions about what it meant to have a perfect relationship.

“There were significant endless discussions about, what is relational perfection? What is the perfect way to interact as a couple? And for the large part of our relationship, monogamy was what we chose, not thinking of monogamy as the only relational perfection,” Will continued.

“We have given each other trust and freedom, with the belief that everybody has to find their own way. And marriage for us can’t be a prison,” Will said. “And I don’t suggest our road for anybody. I don’t suggest this road for anybody. But the experiences that the freedoms that we’ve given one another and the unconditional support, to me, is the highest definition of love.”

The couple separated a little over a year ago and at that time Jada had an affair with singer August Alsina and it nearly drove the couple to divorce. “I wasn’t sure I was ever going to speak to you again. The fact that I’m speaking to you again is a miracle,” Will said in a candid interview on Jada’s Red Table Talk show.

But somehow, the couple pulled it through.

www.youtube.com

“I’m just happy ’cause I definitely believe that you and I, we never, ever, ever thought that we would make it back,” Jada said.

The story of Will and Jada shows that even though the couple was able to make an open marriage work for a period of time, it also drove a wedge between the two.

However, the couple is back together because their relationship is about much more than just sex.

“There’s a real power in just knowing somebody’s riding with you no matter what. And you really can’t know that until you’ve been through some stuff,” Will admitted.

“We have really gotten to that new place of unconditional love,” said Jada.

Barbados prime minister goes viral with her powerful speech to the United Nations

We are accustomed to seeing heads of state from large, economically powerful nations making headlines, but this week we’re getting a taste of the powerhouse leadership some smaller countries can offer.

Mia Motley, the prime minister of Barbados, gave a speech to the United Nations General Assembly that is earning her accolades across the internet and around the world.

A two-minute clip was shared by Twitter user Ben Phillips in which Motley quoted Bob Marley and asked who will “get up” and “stand up” for the people suffering around the world from the pandemic, climate change, poverty and food insecurity.

“It is not because we do not have enough,” she said. “It is because we do not have the will to distribute that which we have.”

Prime Minister Motley called for the leaders of the world to go beyond words and take collective action.

“It is not beyond us to solve this problem,” she continued. “If we can find the will to send people to the moon and solve male baldness, we can solve simple problems like letting our people eat at affordable prices.”

Motley’s whole speech is worth watching, but the viral clip comparing our push to cure baldness with our efforts to feed people is timely, as it comes a few days after the first U.N. Food Systems Summit. The U.N. describes the inaugural summit as “a historic opportunity to empower all people to leverage the power of food systems to drive our recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and get us back on track to achieve all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.”

Next to water, food is our most basic human need. Having inadequate food and nutrition hinders people’s ability to function, which in turn impacts our ability to address every other global challenge we face.

The term “food system” refers to every process and person involved in cultivating, making and distributing food, from farmers to pickers to truck drivers to supermarket workers. Unsustainability in any part of a food system can keep people from getting the nutrition they need. Tackling food systems is crucial if we hope to meet goals such as eradicating poverty, providing universal education, creating sustainable communities and achieving peace on our planet.

Such collective action has to take place at the leadership level, of course, but there are also actions each one of us can take toward a more equitable, sustainable world. One simple thing we can all do is participate in Sustainable Sundays—enjoying a climate-friendly meal and supporting sustainable food systems wherever we live. That means choosing locally grown foods that are in season, perhaps from a farmer’s market, community food cooperative or your own garden. It might mean eating sustainably sourced seafood or finding a simple plant-based recipe to try.

Many of the challenges facing humanity require bold, high-level action on the part of the world’s governments, but that doesn’t mean we don’t all have a part to play in creating a better world for all. Small steps lead to big strides, and it’s up to each of us to do what we can individually to make progress toward our collective goals.

As Prime Minister Motley said in her final words to her fellow leaders, “We cannot solve every problem of the world, but we must solve those within our purview immediately.”

‘Archer’ Has A Plan To Address Jessica Walter’s Absence In Its Upcoming 13th (!!!) Season

Did you even realize Archer has been on for 12 seasons? The FX favorite launched in 2009, all the way back during the first year of the Obama administration. Somehow it’s kept the quality control in tact across three separate decades. And surely they’ll try to keep it going with the newly greenlit 13th season, with one new hurdle: They’ll have to do with without one of their key cast members, Jessica Walter.

The acclaimed actress and Arrested Development alum passed away in March at the age of 80. She’s long voiced Malory Archer, mother to H. Jon Benjamin’s sorta-hero Sterling Archer and at one point head of the show’s covert but bumbling intelligence agency. Though it may be hard to imagine the show without her withering line readings, the show won’t simply move on. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the loss will be “creatively addressed” in the 13th season. Whatever that means — repurposing unused Walter recordings? Something truly outside the box? — is something fans will have to wait another year to see.

As it happens, new Archer episodes are currently airing, with Walters in-tact. The 12th season began its run in late August, with two more episodes left to debut. The seventh of eight episodes airs on Wednesday, September 29.
