Inglewood rapper FrostyDaSnowmann fully believes he’s “That Guy” and does a pretty good job of trying to convince viewers of the same in this week’s UPROXX Sessions. Featuring a stripped-down beat and the off-kilter flow that’s become a signature of the LA underground scene, Frosty sports a fit that goes well with his moniker and does all the witty trash-talking that has made LA’s underground so hilariously engaging.
The rapper is bouncing back after recovering from a shooting in his hometown this past August. Prior to that, he was attempting a career reset after a two-year stint in prison on assault and theft charges. He first caught attention in 2016 with his single “Milwaukee Bucks” produced by Ron-Ron, one of the focal points of the “New LA” movement. Since his release, he’s been consistently releasing music independently on his YouTube channel featuring fellow members of the wave 1TakeJay, Almighty Suspect, and Cheesy.
Watch FrostyDaSnowmann’s chilly “That Guy” for UPROXX Sessions above.
UPROXX Sessions is Uproxx’s performance show featuring the hottest up-and-coming acts you should keep an eye on. Featuring creative direction from LA promotion collective, Ham On Everything, and taking place on our “bathroom” set designed and painted by Julian Gross, UPROXX Sessions is a showcase of some of our favorite performers, who just might soon be yours, too.
A group of 40 former law enforcement officers, journalists, and military intel officers known as the Case Breakers claim to have discovered the identity of the Zodiac Killer, the serial murderer who terrorized Northern California in the early 1960s but was never caught. And never will be: Gary Francis Poste, the man they believe to be the inspiration for David Fincher’s best movie, died in 2018. Via Fox News:
The Zodiac Killer has been connected to five murders between 1968 and 1969… The Case Breakers say they identified Poste as the killer after uncovering forensic evidence and photos from Poste’s darkroom. The team said a few images featured in the press release show scars on his forehead that similarly matches scars on a sketch of the Zodiac.
“He lived a double life,” a California woman who lived next door to Poste and his wife told Fox News when presented with the (potentially dubious) evidence. “As I’m adult thinking back, it all kind of makes sense now. At the time when I was a teenager, I didn’t put two and two together until I got older. It hit me full-blown that Gary’s the Zodiac.”
The FBI and San Francisco Police Department declined to comment on the allegation as the case remains an ongoing investigation. But this must come as a huge relief to Ted Cruz, even though the senator definitely isn’t the Zodiac Killer. Nope. No way. Not him.

After a one-year stint with the Los Angeles Lakers last season, Montrezl Harrell was dealt to the Washington Wizards this summer as part of the Russell Westbrook trade. As a member of the Lakers, Harrell averaged 13.5 points on 65 percent true shooting and was a steady source of offense off the bench during the regular season, but saw his opportunities dry up in the playoffs, when he played just 39 minutes in four games against the Phoenix Suns.
On Wednesday, Harrell offered some thoughts on the way he was deployed with Los Angeles, becoming the latest former Laker big man to voice his displeasure with last season’s center rotation — Marc Gasol and Andre Drummond likewise weren’t happy with what became a logjam for center minutes late last year.
Montrezl Harrell on how he views his opportunity with the Wizards: “I didn’t really get to be utilized how I wanted to be last year. I damn near felt like I had a season off.”
With a revamped roster that features Spencer Dinwiddie, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Kyle Kuzma, Harrell has the chance to prove his sentiments true with the Wizards, who will look to build upon their playoff appearance from last season.
Among Harrell, Kuzma, Daniel Gafford, Thomas Bryant (when he returns from injury), Davis Bertans, Deni Avdija and Rui Hachimura, Washington sports a bevy of front-court options, so Harrell will be pushed for minutes. Regardless, he is assuredly in a position to carve out a prominent role and validate his recent comments if he can return to the form that earned him Sixth Man of the Year honors with the Clippers two years ago.
It’s the first week of October, which means that some of us are gearing up for spooky season while others are already getting into the holiday spirit. Elton John and Ed Sheeran are apparently in the latter camp, as the two famed musicians are apparently collaborating on a Christmas song together.
Sheeran spilled the beans about the upcoming collaboration in an interview with Dutch radio station NPO Radio 2. After being asked about the possibility of ever writing a holiday song, Sheeran was at first coy with the details. “There’s something coming in December,” Sheeran said. “And it’s f*cking great.” But when asked if it had anything to do with John, Sheeran shared a bit more of the details.
Apparently, John was over the moon to see his 1973 track “Step Into Christmas” was on the charts last year, which inspired him to want to write a new holiday track with Sheeran. “He rung me on Christmas Day and he said, ”Step Into Christmas’ is No. 6 on the charts, and I’m 74, and I’m still having f*cking chart hits, this is great! I want to do another Christmas song, will you do it with me?’”
Sheeran didn’t reveal just exactly when fans can expect to hear the new holiday track, but it’s most likely because he’s focused on his upcoming album =, which is due out later this month. After releasing =, Sheeran is set to go on a European tour titled +-=÷x, also known as “The Mathematics Tour.”
= is out 10/29 via Atlantic Records. Pre-order it here.
Ed Sheeran is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
Happy spooky month, everyone! For a long time, October was the period when AAA studios started dropping their biggest titles to be a part of the holiday release cycle. It’s also a very popular month for horror games or anything using a horror aesthetic to release. It feels seasonal with Halloween capping off the month and everyone seeking out scary games to stay on theme.
Of course, video games don’t really have a dead period anymore with major titles releasing throughout the calendar. Horror games definitely still come out during October, but they’re also pretty spread out throughout the year as well. It’s a bit of a bummer, because having those times of the year to anticipate big and/or seasonal titles seems like a thing of the past.
Of course, with all of that said, October 2021 is stacked with must-play games that everyone should be keeping an eye on.
Games With Gold – Xbox ONE, Xbox Series X/S
After a weaker September, Xbox came out strong for the month of October. Anyone looking to get their spooky fix will have two options to choose from with Resident Evil – Code: Veronica and Castlevania: Harmony of Despair. Both games are spin-offs from the main series, except Veronica was originally designed to be a sequel to Resident Evil 2. Both games each have a healthy amount of support behind them. Of course, not everyone gets down with the spooky during Halloween season, so there are alternative options like the parkour game Hover or the rhythm shooter game Aaero.
PlayStation Plus Games – PlayStation 4/PlayStation 5
The highly-acclaimed Mortal Kombat X alone makes this a month worth having a PS Plus Subcription. The other two games will depend on the taste of the player. Only golf fans are going to appreciate the details of PGA 2K21, while Hell Let Loose might appeal to anyone that wants a World War II FPS not called Battlefield or Call of Duty.
Metroid Dread – Nintendo Switch
It feels unreal to be saying this, but a new 2D Metroid game is releasing this month and it looks incredible. Metroid Dread is Samus’ first completely new 2D adventure in 19 years. Every trailer has given off the vibe that this game is going to continue with the horror themes of Metroid Fusion and take them even further. Every trailer feels more eerie than the last, but it also shows off the potential for some really fun action. This game has the potential to be one we’re talking about through the end of the year.
Far Cry 6 – PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC
Far Cry 6 is the latest game in the series and let’s just say there are some huge expectations for this one. Fans have been growing tiresome of the formula that was perfected in Far Cry 3 and have been asking for something new. Not only that, but this game has the added expectation of acknowledging the politics that inspires its story.Far Cry, along with developer Ubisoft, have always had a difficult time walking the line it wants to walk between video games and politics. Could Far Cry 6 finally be the one that nails it, or will it once again come off as a game that couldn’t decide what it wants to be?
Back 4 Blood – PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC
We got a chance to play Back 4 Blood during its open beta period and came away feeling mixed on it. The game definitely gave us what we promised, which was more of the Left 4 Dead formula that its inspired by, but it felt like it was missing something. Back 4 Blood was supposed to be a game that enhanced the formula instead of just repeating it. There wasn’t too much new in that beta, but that was back in August. They’ve had time to fine-tune it and we really want to see what it’s going to look like as a final product. At worst, it’s going to be a fun zombie game to play for a few weeks.
The Jackbox Party Pack 8 – PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, Switch
Hey, a new party pack! The Jackbox games have become a party game staple that can be played both online or in-person with friends. Some packs are better than others, but it’s always worth checking out releases to see if a new favorite is going to be in the pack. That’s why we have to give a recommendation to the upcoming Jackbox Party Pack 8. With the right group of friends, these games can be a really fun time. The eighth pack releasing this month is a great excuse to get everyone together, online or off. All you need is a single copy of the game.
FIFA 22 – PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC
The latest game in the FIFA franchise has the potential to be one of those titles that mark a change in the franchise. This game introduces a new feature called Hypermotion. This new technology has allowed the developers to capture the most accurate animations to date. The result is a game that, gameplay-wise, looks very smooth. Unfortunately, because it’s a modern sports game, that means there are still plenty of microtransactions plaguing the experience. Anyone that enjoys sports games may want to look into picking this up, though, because FIFA games are consistently solid. Just be wary of the microtransactions going in.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy – PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, Switch
Marvel’s infiltration into video games has had mixed success so far. The Spider-Man games were wildly successful, with both Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Moralesreceiving seemingly universal praise. However, Marvel’s Avengers hasn’t had nearly the same level of success due to a plethora of issues since launch. This new Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy game is hoping to replicate Spider-Man and the gameplay early on looks like it may do just that. The key is going to be in the writing. The Guardians movies are all extremely well written and we to expect the same from the game.
Solar Ash – PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4
Solar Ash has been shown at many gaming showcases because of its art style and gameplay hook. This artistic action platformer features beautiful visuals with striking colors and a style that leaves you anticipating what’s next after every jump. It has the chance to be a really special game. We want to play it because every year, there’s an artistic indie games that takes the world by storm and Solar Ash has the chance to do just that. It’s one of 2021’s most anticipated games and nobody should miss out on it.
Riders Republic – PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC
Riders Republic has the potential to be the action-sports game many of us have wanted for years. We got a chance to play it early a few months ago and couldn’t stop praising it. It has a gigantic world, fun gameplay, and exploration was rewarded constantly. There’s something for everyone, whether it’s races, exploration, competing, or hanging out with friends. We are curious to see how long that formula lasts before it gets tiresome, but early signs are something we’re very excited to play more of.
There’s something odd going on with Smash Mouth right now.
The “All Star” band has been performing concerts in recent days, but it hasn’t been lead singer Steve Harwell who was belting it out on stage. Instead, it appeared to be somebody else who is not Harwell, and fans can’t seem to figure out who it is. Furthermore, the band denies replacing Harwell and is brushing aside questions about the mystery singer.
On October 4, a Twitter user asked the band, “Hey @smashmouth did y’all replace your singer & not say anything?” Smash Mouth responded simply, “nope.” The user then followed up with a photo of a singer, presumably from a recent non-Harwell Smash Mouth show, and asked, “Who is this? Everyone wants to know.” They did not receive an answer.
Eve 6, the ’90s band that has a strong Twitter presence today, got some answers. They tweeted, “ok a couple things 1) @smashmouth did you really fire your singer and B) can i be your new singer.” Smash Mouth responded, “nobody got fired but anytime you wanna come sing All Star with us we’re down.” While the band said they did not fire Harwell, that answer doesn’t confirm whether or not they performed with a replacement singer or who that person is.
nobody got fired but anytime you wanna come sing All Star with us we’re down.
After fans noticed the new mystery singer, the band confirmed with TMZ that Harwell missed some recent performances due to “issues with cardiomyopathy and heart failure.” Yesterday, after the TMZ story, Smash Mouth shared a tweet (seemingly written by Harwell) that reads, “Just had some procedures done but I’m good.”
geeez thanks,… lol Just had some procedures done but I’m good.
This afternoon, the band shared tweets about upcoming performance in Jackson, Mississippi on October 7 and in Bethel, New York on October 9. It remains to be seen just who will grab the mic during those shows.
In a new feature on Hollywood’s struggles to keep film and TV sets safe during the ongoing pandemic, Giancarlo Esposito absolutely unloaded on his fellow actors who are still stubbornly refusing to get the vaccine. The outspoken TV veteran, who rose to prominence as Gus Fring on AMC’s Breaking Bad, can’t believe that anyone would be selfish enough to not get vaccinated before working with others.
Eposito’s words capped off a new feature in The Hollywood Reporter on how, like most industries in America, even the entertainment world has to deal with anti-vaxxers. Only these ones have superstar agents and managers who can strong arm studios, and Esposito is calling them out:
“If you don’t want to vaccinate, go to a small island and sequester yourself,” The Mandalorian and Better Call Saul actor says. “[Otherwise] you’re saying ‘F*ck you’ to all you other human beings. We all have to do it if we want to live. I don’t understand how people don’t vaccinate. For me, I’ve lost dear friends, so I know it’s real. Not only in Europe but in America, friends who were completely healthy and uncompromised. The vaccine is the answer. I’m not downing anyone who doesn’t want to vaccinate. Don’t work. Go ride it out somewhere where you’re not going to compromise anyone else if you get it.”
The THR piece also revealed that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Letitia Wright has allegedly resumed spreading anti-vaccination beliefs on the set of the sequel in Atlanta. Wright deleted her social media accounts back in December 2020 after tweeting a video that accused the vaccine of being the “Mark of the Beast,” and according to THR, the event led to her “entire team of U.S. representatives” quietly parting ways. Considering they both work for Disney at the moment, maybe Esposito and Wright can have a little chat.
It’s been about a year and a half since Kevin Parker released Tame Impala‘s highly anticipated album The Slow Rush. Now, the musician is giving fans even more Tame Impala content with The Slow Rush Deluxe box set, which will celebrate the album’s two-year anniversary. It features some unreleased b-sides from the LP, which Parker has now previewed with a hypnotic remix to “Breathe Deeper” featuring none other than Lil Yachty.
The “Breathe Deeper” remix’s instrumentals stay the same, but Parker’s verses are replaced with Yachty unique flow. The rapper’s cadence mirror’s the song’s swirling and psychedelic beat. He delivers lyrics about linking up with a love interest and dancing the night away that are slightly washed out over the bouncy rhythm, giving the impression of a lo-fi remix.
Lil Yachty spoke about his collaboration with Parker in a statement alongside the new remix, saying he’s been a longtime fan: “It was so amazing to work with Kevin as I’ve been a big fan since high school so it was a pleasant surprise and honor to be a part of such an incredible song.”
The physical version of the The Slow Rush Deluxe box set features two transparent red vinyls and alternate album artwork, including a 40-page booklet and The Slow Rush 2050 calendar. Both the physical and the digital version of the deluxe album include the “Breathe Deeper (Lil Yachty Remix),” as well as the pre-album single “Patience” and some extended versions of a few songs.
Listen to “Breathe Deeper (Lil Yachty Remix)” above.
The Slow Rush Deluxe is out 2/18/2022 via Modular. Pre-order it here.
It’s usually a good sign for an artist’s career when their concert in a major metropolis sells so many tickets that it has to be moved to a new — and larger — venue at the last minute. It’s probably also a good sign that despite the change of venue, the line wrapped around the block before the doors opened. The last opportune omen is the fact that those people in line patiently waited over 2 hours past the initial doors time for those doors to open and stuck it out through a show that lasted until well after midnight.
With all those tenets in mind, it looks very much like Nigerian Afrobeats/R&B singer Tems is already a star. The Monday night LA stop on the singer’s first-ever US tour followed the above arch, starting out at The Roxy before switching to The Fonda Theatre a day before the show was to take place, which didn’t stop a legion of fans from lining up down Hollywood Boulevard, around the corner on Gower, and all the way down the street for most of the next block. Those fans certainly did wait it out, and their patience was rewarded by an impressive performance from the burgeoning star.
Tems’ opener, Amaarae, generated suitable hype for the headliner with a set that showcased her bold personality and welcoming demeanor. The opener pulled fans onstage to perform alongside her more than once and provided a lively counterpoint to the relatively lower key set that followed. Her exuberant tunes were more defiant and extroverted, whereas Tems’ set — taken from her two EPs, 2020’s For Broken Ears and last month’s If Orange Was A Place — was more internally focused and emotional.
Tems’ performance bore many of the hallmarks of a veteran performer, despite her ostensible rookie status. Framed in angelic light and wearing a flowing, translucent dressing gown, she delivered powerful vocals over renditions of “Damages,” “Free Mind,” and of course, “Essence,” the Wizkid megahit that brought Tems to national prominence. Her fans, a diverse mix of young people, many flamboyantly dressed in traditional African patterns and styles, bought into every new song in the set, despite some being relatively very new. The inevitable singalong that broke out when she launched into “Essence” — assisted by Wizkid in a surprise appearance, naturally — left the impression that she’ll have plenty of opportunities to improve on lots of future tours.
About that delay, though: It’s becoming clearer by the day that fans will be feeling the fallout from the pandemic and resulting entertainment shutdown for a while yet. So far, we’ve seen multiple examples of supply chain and logistical problems forcing artists to postpone events in just the last few weeks. Post Malone was forced to postpone Posty Fest due to supply problems, while J. Cole canceled and rescheduled a pair of shows after hours of delay because there wasn’t enough time to set up the stage as he envisioned. Although Tems didn’t specifically cite these problems, there’s little doubt that switching venues affected the production and prompted these delays.
Tems’ concert is also the second one Uproxx covered recently where a relatively new artist who’d broken out during the pandemic suddenly found that they were way more popular than projected at the last minute. Blxst’s Santa Ana tour stop, initially set for The Observatory’s smaller Constellation Room, was moved to the main stage practically the day of. The bad news is that eventually another breakout star will likely be forced to either play the smaller venue, leaving fans out, or reschedule shows as fewer venues and crew will be readily available. The good news is that these last-minute updates indicate the improving health of the industry, with tickets in high demand, and better projections for stars who couldn’t see their real-world impact as they grew their profiles mostly over the internet for the past year.
For acts like Tems, that can only be encouraging. Having to build a career in less-than-ideal conditions probably added a number of additional stressors on top the usual pressures of learning to deal with fame on the fly. But being able to see real-life rewards — particularly in respect to learning that your star has risen even higher than you (or your booking agent) could have imagined almost makes it all worth it. So, even as we all face the residual effects of the pandemic in live entertainment, for some stars and their fans, the payoff is more than worth the wait.
The Trump camp can’t be enjoying the publicity rollout for Stephanie Grisham’s new book, I’ll Take Your Questions Now, which also happens to be the book that Stephen Colbert doesn’t want you to buy. That’s a fair point, but also: so many advance tidbits from this book have been previewed that, hey, we may have already heard the best parts of this book? We heard about how Melania Trump (who Stephanie worked for as chief-of-staff) enjoyed humiliating Trump in retaliation for the alleged Stormy Daniels affair. Wwe heard what Trump apparently said about those toadstool-penis claims, and then (and this is not all) there’s the vegan aversion that Trump claimed would protect his big brain.
Then there’s Grisham’s revelations about Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who she called “Senator Freelader” with a “creepy little smile” as revealed by Business Insider:
“Senator Freeloader was sitting at a table by the pool, a big grin on his face, lapping up the goodies he was getting like some potentate. He said to me, with a creepy little smile, ‘Isn’t this great? Man, this is the life’… It struck me that he was using Trump to mop up the freebies like there was no tomorrow (seems that he still is). He would show up at Mar-a-Lago or Bedminster to play free rounds of golf, stuff his face with free food, and hang out with Trump and his celebrity pal..”
How does Graham feel about this allegation? He spoke on-air with Newsmax’s Rob Schmitt, and Graham found all of this to be so funny. “Apparently she’s implying that the only reason I want to be around President Trump is because of the food.” More giggles poured fourth: “I’ll let you determine if that’s why I spend time with the president. Because I need my next meal.” He also added, “My appreciation for President Trump includes the food! But much beyond that.” A big “huh?” seems accurate.
