Three brave girls took action after their teacher berated a classmate for having two dads

This article originally appeared on 12.02.19

Just imagine being an 11-year-old boy who’s been shuffled through the foster care system. No forever home. No forever family. No idea where you’ll be living or who will take care of you in the near future.

Then, a loving couple takes you under their care and chooses to love you forever.

What could one be more thankful for?

That’s why when a fifth grader at Deerfield Elementary School in Cedar Hills, Utah was asked by his substitute teacher what he’s thankful for this Thanksgiving, he said finally being adopted by his two dads.

via OD Action / Twitter

To the child’s shock, the teacher replied, “that’s nothing to be thankful for,” and then went on a rant in front of 30 students saying that “two men living together is a sin” and “homosexuality is wrong.”

While the boy sat there embarrassed, three girls in the class stood up for him by walking out of the room to tell the principal. Shortly after, the substitute was then escorted out of the building.

While on her way out she scolded the boy, saying it was his fault she was removed.

One of the boy’s parents-to-be is Louis van Amstel, is a former dancer on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” “It’s absolutely ridiculous and horrible what she did,” he told The Salt Lake Tribune. “We were livid. It’s 2019 and this is a public school.”

The boy told his parents-to-be he didn’t speak up in the classroom because their final adoption hearing is December 19 and he didn’t want to do anything that would interfere.

He had already been through two failed adoptions and didn’t want it to happen again.

A spokesperson for the Alpine School District didn’t go into detail about the situation but praised the students who spoke out.

“Fellow students saw a need, and they were able to offer support,” David Stephenson said. “It’s awesome what happened as far as those girls coming forward.”

He also said that “appropriate action has been taken” with the substitute teacher.

“We are concerned about any reports of inappropriate behavior and take these matters very seriously,” Kelly Services, the school the contracts out substitute teachers for the district, said in a statement. “We conduct business based on the highest standards of integrity, quality, and professional excellence. We’re looking into this situation.”

After the incident made the news, the soon-to-be adoptive parents’ home was covered in paper hearts that said, “We love you” and “We support you.”

Religion is supposed to make us better people.

But what have here is clearly a situation where a woman’s judgement about what is good and right was clouded by bigoted dogma. She was more bothered by the idea of two men loving each other than the act of pure love they committed when choosing to adopt a child.

A brutally honest kindergarten teacher shares five reasons why she quit the profession

This article originally appeared on 11.04.19

Teachers in modern-day America face a whole host of problems. Under-funded schools, low pay, union busting, an overemphasis on standardized testing, and children who are addicted to technology.

But it seems the biggest problem for many teachers is dealing with parents.

“Today, new teachers remain in our profession an average of just 4.5 years, and many of them list ‘issues with parents’ as one of their reasons for throwing in the towel,” Ron Clark, motivation speaker and author of five, books on education, said in a CNN editorial.

“Word is spreading, and the more negativity teachers receive from parents, the harder it becomes to recruit the best and the brightest out of colleges,” Clark continued.

Jessica Gentry, a former kindergarten teacher for 12 years at at Stone Spring Elementary School in Harrisonburg, Virginia, wrote a viral Facebook thread about why she’s left the profession and says that parents were a major reason.

“I think it’s easier for people to believe that I left teaching because of the lousy pay,” she wrote in a post last June that received over 270,000 reactions and 220,000 shares.

RELATED: Science proves ‘kids these days’ are fine—it’s the adults who tend to be oblivious a-holes

“It was easier for my former HR director to believe it was because I found something that I was more passionate about. Some would allow them to assume that… let them be comfortable in their assumptions because your truth may lead to discomfort of others,” she continued.

Gentry made a list of five major reasons why she left the profession and she held absolutely nothing back. Here is an edited version of her five reasons, you can read the whole post here.

1. The old excuse “the kids have changed”. No. No friggin way. Kids are kids. PARENTING has changed. SOCIETY has changed. The kids are just the innocent victims of that. Parents are working crazy hours, consumed by their devices, leaving kids in unstable parenting/coparenting situations, terrible media influences… and we are going to give the excuse that the KIDS have changed?

2. In the midst of all of this… our response is we need to be “21st Century” schools. 1 to 1 student to technology. Oh. Okay. So forget the basics of relationship building and hands on learning. Kids already can’t read social cues and conduct themselves appropriately in social settings… let’s toss more devices at them because it looks good on our website.

3. And since our technology approach doesn’t seem to be working, teachers must need more training. So take away two planning periods a week. And render that time utterly worthless when it comes to ADDING to the quality of the instruction.

4. Instead of holding parents accountable… and making them true partners, we’ve adopted a customer service mindset. I’ve seen the Facebook rants about attendance and getting “the letter”. Well, here’s the thing… I can’t teach your child if he’s not in school. I was cussed out by parents who wanted to attend field trips but missed the THREE notes that went home–and when they did attend a trip, sat on their phone the entire time. I’ve had parents stand me up multiple times on Conference Days then call to tattle on me when I refused to offer an after school option. I’ve had parents tell me that I’m not allowed to tell their child ‘no’…

5. My mental and physical health was in jeopardy every.single.day. Knowing that your kids need and deserve more than they’re getting. Sitting in one meeting after another, begging for more support, only to be told ‘don’t lose sleep over them’… when you LOVE your kids and are PASSIONATE about your mission… these messages tear you apart.

Gentry left the profession to focus on ways to help children where she believes they need it most, in their own homes.

RELATED: A dad’s viral kindergarten field trip post highlights how freaking amazing teachers are

“I decided to start with my 1 at home… and work to help other mommas be able to show up for their ones at home,” she wrote. “Because… I really do believe it starts there. I found something that allows me to impact the environments that [her former students] go home to.”

In an interview with “Good Morning America,” Gentry said the response to her viral post has been “overwhelmingly positive.”

“There is an enormous amount of educators who feel that exact way but have felt alone and guilty for thinking so,” Gentry told “Good Morning America.” “I never expected it to reach farther than a few friends — but I am so humbled to be able to throw the curtains open on the issue and give those who feel unable to say it a voice.”

Mayim Bialik Absolutely Loved ‘SNL’ Roasting Her Role In The ‘Jeopardy!’ Hosting Scandal

During the cold open for this past weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live, the show took a random crack at the Jeopardy! hosting scandal, and Mayim Bialik apparently loved every minute of it. The sketch centered around a press conference for the recently fired Los Angeles Raiders coach Jon Gruden where owner Mark Davis (played by Alex Moffat) revealed that he’d already found a replacement coach: LeVar Burton.

Played by Kenan Thompson, Burton took the podium and immediately announced “Suck on that, Mayim!” a direct reference to the fiasco on Jeopardy! where Burton was passed over as Alex Trebek’s replacement. Despite dredging up the contentious host search, which caused Bialik some social media backlash, the Big Bang Theory star appreciated the shout out.

“One of the highest honors – being mentioned on @nbcsnl!!!! Love this!!!!” Bialik tweeted.

Bialik found herself chained to the Jeopardy! scandal after she was picked to host primetime specials while former executive producer Mike Richards was chosen as Trebek’s successor in a highly controversial decision. Richards would step down as host and be fired from the show not long after. According to reports, Bialik was actually the top choice to be the permanent host, but she was unable to commit to the production schedule. However, following Richards removal, Bialik has been showing signs that she may be interested in becoming the new face of Jeopardy! after all.

What’s On Tonight: ‘Theo Von: Regular People’ Joins Netflix’s Growing Stand-Up Comedy Stable

Theo Von: Regular People (Netflix stand-up comedy special) — Podcasting funny guy Theo Von is actually not a regular dude, as you’ll find out from this set of stories about his childhood and how, as an adult, he does his best to avoid work. Also, get ready for some matchmaking shenanigans, as related from Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

Stargirl (CW, 8:00pm) — Hey, Joel McHale will return to this series as a regular (after Starman’s very apparent death in the pilot episode) in Season 3, but first, Courtney’s life is on the line after a frightening encounter, and her hero crew must carefully plot where to go next.

Supergirl (CW, 9:00pm) — The city must fend off a nightmare monster, and that means that Kara must dump her responsibilities and a key interview, which leads her to reflect on her work-life-work balance.

La Brea (NBC, 9:00pm) — Natalie Zea stars in this series about an LA sinkhole that sucks an unfortunate group into some primeval hellhole, where pterodactyls and bad CGI reside. It’s preposterous and not objectively good but might attract Manifest fans, so get ready (sit down for this) for a plane to somehow crash down amongst the survivors.

Queens (ABC, 10:00pm) — Following Girls5Eva‘s success on Peacock, this similarly themed series follows a fractured girl group that was once part of a hip-hop dynasty. Now in their 40s, can these ladies recapture their former magic and swagger?

Chucky: Season 1 (SYFY and USA, 10:00pm) — The good-bad news is that the O.G. homicidal doll shall never die. Granted, a mid-2020 teaser that kept things very mysterious regarding who would voice Chucky, but this trailer puts that mystery to rest. Mark Hamill may have been the most recent Chucky, but original voice actor Brad Dourif will return for this USA Network/SyFy sequel series. Also notably, Jennifer Tilly will return as Tiffany Valentine, but this trailer largely focuses on Zackary Arthur’s Jake, who makes the mistake of adopting Chucky at a garage sale. All hell breaks loose, and as Chucky puts it, this will be the “World Series of Slaughter.”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert — Nick Offerman, Charlamagne Tha God

In case you missed these streaming picks from last Tuesday:

Convergence: Courage in a Crisis (Netflix film) — This documentary poses an unlikely idea: did the pandemic really bring us together, as much as it’s torn humanity apart? Listen up for the argument that unsung heroes are pushing us toward a collectively brighter future.

Bright: Samurai Soul (Netflix film) — This anime movie takes place in between the Shogunate’s fall and the Meiji era’s rise, all while a wandering ronin and an orc (who’s working toward redemption) meet up with a young elf girl, and they all take a journey toward the land of the elves. In the process, they must evade a shady organization who aims to take the elf’s wand and use it to resurrect the Dark Lord’s power.

The Prince Estate And Superfly Are Joining Forces For An Immersive Prince Experience

It seems as though we are entering the golden age of legacy artist “experiences.” Just last week, the Bowie 75 experience in New York and London was announced, where fans can do everything from don a David Bowie costume (#forthegram, of course) to peruse different thematic photo galleries. Now, Bonnaroo and Outside Lands Festival producer Superfly is partnering with The Prince Estate to put on a similarly minded immersive experience centered on the “legacy and times” of The Purple One.

I visited the “Prince From Minneapolis” exhibit at Seattle’s MoPOP recently and can attest that merely looking at vintage photos of Prince qualifies as an immersive experience in and of itself; he’s a one-of-a-kind figure and his life and incomparable style are fascinating. The details of what exactly will be included in this new Prince experience that will be coming to Chicago next year are still coming to fruition. But one can expect that it’ll be as thorough as Superfly’s recent The Office experience and their wildly entertaining Clusterfest that featured hat-tipping installations to numerous comedy institutions like Seinfeld, South Park, and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

Superfly says that this is the first in a slew of music experiences that they’ll be rolling out in the next few months. Co-founder Kerry Black added some thoughts in a statement:

“We want to reimagine how fans interact with their favorite artists and music. There are few ways to encounter music in a physical space outside of concerts. This project will change that, pioneering a new approach to experiences while respecting the creative vision of the artist.”

Prince is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

William Shatner Found It Hard To Believe That ‘Halloween’ Was Serious About Using That Captain Kirk Mask

As most movie buffs know, ever since his first appearance in the original 1978 Halloween, Michael Myers has been knifing people down while wearing his now-iconic pale, white Captain Kirk mask. So imagine the surprise of William Shatner when he learned that his classic Star Trek character was now the face of one of cinema’s most brutal horror villains.

“I thought, ‘Is that a joke? Are they kidding?’” Shatner told Jake’s Takes. While the actor never saw the film, he did see the mask in a poster, and immediately knew where it was from. Via The Hollywood Reporter:

“I recognized it as the death mask they had made for me,” he explained. “They made a mask of my face on Star Trek out of clay so I would not have to be available for the prosthetics they would have to put on my face to look old or evil or whatever it was they were making me look like. So somewhere along the line, someone got that mask and made a mask of it for [the holiday] Halloween.”

After making the journey from prop to Halloween costume, the Captain Kirk mask found its way into the first Halloween movie where the eyeholes were widen and it was painted white to give Michael Myers his signature look. However, it’s journey didn’t stop there. The mask would become the basis for The Whisperers on The Walking Dead where it can terrify a new generation of horror fans.

Dave Grohl Loved Reading Bad Reviews Of Foo Fighters’ Bee Gees Covers Album

It seems like Dave Grohl is always busy doing one thing or another. One diversion he and his Foo Fighters cohorts occupied themselves with in 2021 was recording an album of Bee Gees covers. The project was good fun, but apparently not everybody was into it, but it’s OK because Grohl actually enjoyed seeing negative reviews the project received.

In a new Rolling Stone interview, Grohl spoke about how the project came to be, saying:

“Listen, we’re not good at vacations. We were at our studio recording live versions of songs for different radio stations. And in the corner of the room, there were two people talking about the Bee Gees documentary, which everybody had seen at this point, except for me. And so I was like, ‘What is up with this f*cking movie? You know what? Let’s record a Bee Gees song. Let’s do ‘You Should Be Dancing.” That’s the most fun I’ve ever had recording a song, and it quite possibly could be the best thing we’ve ever done. We come in the next day… I said, ‘F*ck it, let’s do another Bee Gees song.’”

He went on to note that he’s not sweating the non-positive feedback because the project wasn’t meant to be a huge deal: “We basically made that record in a week, and for no other reason than just to have fun. The best part was when I started reading bad reviews of it. It was truly just to make ourselves smile. Hopefully other people as well.”

Trendy West Hollywood Restaurants You Need To Try At Least Once

West Hollywood is LA’s trendiest neighborhood, where A-list stars and influencers in the wild can be spotted on the daily. Celebrity and celebrity-adjacent experiences abound. I’ve seen Pauly D driving a neon orange Lamborgini down Melrose Boulevard, befriended Cardi B‘s party bus driver outside of Poppy Night Club, pet Logan Lerman‘s dog at Alfred Coffee, and even took a pilates class with P Diddy.

West Hollywood, or what locals like to call WeHo, plays like one big, very bougie party. And when you’re there, it’s easy to feel like you’re invited.

While the famous folks and the slew of TikTokers who risk their lives by dancing in the streets keep things interesting, it’s the restaurants and nightlife that actually make WeHo cool. And yes, even the restaurants have had their share of time in the spotlight. Many of West Hollywood’s most beloved food destinations have been featured on reality TV – anyone watch Vanderpump Rules? (No? Us neither. Not even on rainy, hungover Sundays when reality TV seems super comforting and it’s running in four-hour blocks and you can just curl under your comforters and…)

If you’re a sucker for Instagrammable ambiance and shockingly attractive waiters (most of which are aspiring actors and male models, obvi), WeHo’s food scene lives up to the hype and then some. Below, I’m sharing the trendiest West Hollywood restaurants — all of which I recommend you try at least once.

Gracias Madre

Gracias Madre is one of my favorite restaurants in all of LA. It packs dreamy decor, bomb ass food, and one-of-a-kind drinks that are equally as tasty as they are aesthetically pleasing into one place. The half indoor, half outdoor restaurant serves a full menu of vegan Mexican dishes made from scratch using local, organic ingredients. I know you meat lovers are probably rolling your eyes at me right now, but don’t knock these plant-based delicacies until you try them.

Everything I’ve eaten on the menu (and I’ve had a lot) tasted ultra-fresh and flavorful. I particularly love the chicharrón tacos, filled with battered fried oyster mushrooms, sunflower sprouts, chipotle aioli, and habanero salsa with a side of rice and black beans. The crunch-to-sauce ratio is on point, and the habanero’s spicy kick will wake you right up. The wet jackfruit burrito and the various “bowls” are crowd favorites, too. You should also order the chips and guac, but that’s a given. Flavor-wise, if I didn’t tell you this joint was vegan, you probably wouldn’t even notice.

In addition to the food menu, the selection of signature drinks will elevate your Gracias Madre meal to the next level. They’re especially satisfying to drink under the twinkling lights and olive trees on the picturesque patio. When I feel like straying away from my usual margarita order, my go-to cocktail is the “Slushie,” a frozen mix of watermelon, Cupreata mezcal, aloe, manzanilla, gentian amaro, lime, and agave. If you’re feeling dangerous, you can even order a mezcal or tequila flight.

Peruse the full Gracias Madre menu here.

Pump

Reality TV junkies will already know this one, but it’s definitely worth the mention. Pump is co-owned by Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, Lisa Vanderpump, whose first restaurant, Sur, rose to fame on Bravo’s Vanderpump Rules. Pump is in the center of West Hollywood’s LGBTQ+ neighborhood where gay bars, flashing LED lights, and rainbow sidewalks rule. It’s a blast, and there’s always something to do if you choose to keep the night going after dinner.

In fact, Pump almost feels like a nightclub in and of itself. The restaurant’s dim lighting, whimsical decor, and romantic table settings (complete with a rose and candle) will get you in the mood to hit the town.

When it comes to trendy hotspots like Pump, I usually expect the experience and food to be overrated. However, Pump’s Mediterranean-inspired menu is surprisingly well-curated with a diverse selection of appetizers, salads, pasta dishes, and main courses. Make sure to order the Rock Shrimp Tempura. The battered shrimp are tossed in a chili citrus aioli, then topped with paprika mango chutney, chives, and micro cilantro. As for the main event, you can’t go wrong with any of the pastas. These are also a smart choice if you plan on making a stop at The Abbey next door for more drinks. I recommend the four-cheese ravioli or angel hair with roasted chicken and pine nuts.

Now for the fun part – the cocktails! Pump’s extensive drinks menu features quirky-named cocktails like “Take Mai Tie Off” and “Spicy Cowboy.” I order the “Pumpagranite Margarita,” which is Pump’s twist on a pomegranate marg. The sweet (yet strong) cocktail is made with Blanco Tequila, triple sec, fresh lime, home-crafted simple syrup, and pomegranate liqueur.

Check out Pump’s drinks, dinner, and brunch menus here.

Bacari W. 3rd

I’ve celebrated several birthdays at Bacari, and it delights me every time. Tucked behind what looks like a dingy storefront is an intimate patio dining area adorned with string lights, ceramic chandeliers, and vines hanging overhead. Walking through the dark cobblestone alleyway to enter the restaurant transports you to what feels like a mini European plaza. Bacari’s menu offers Venetian-inspired small plates and Mediterranean-influenced dishes by Chef Lior Hillel.

Bacari is great for groups and celebratory events because the menu is ideal for sharing with the table. The wide variety of sharables include dishes like charcuterie plates, burrata Caprese, caramelized brussels sprouts, pizza (the Asian pear and brie pizza is a must), and chipotle chicken wings. If you want an eccentric sweet treat to top off your Mediterranian meal, order the “best cake you’ve ever had” from the dessert menu. It’s topped with Medjool dates, brown sugar caramel, and crispy bacon (Tip: Add vanilla ice cream to the mix. Trust me, it’s worth the additional $2.)

Bacari is best known for its wine list, but it also offers 15 different cocktails that are equally as enjoyable to sip on. Dairy-free folks will be happy to know that the espresso martini is made with oat milk (the restaurant clearly knows its LA audience). If you like whiskey, order the brown butter sour. It consists of brown butter-infused whiskey, dry curaçao, egg white foam, nutmeg, and lemon.

Overall, Bacari presents a dinner to remember. If you want to try it for yourself, definitely make a reservation. Being that the venue is on the smaller side, it’s a good idea to book a table ahead of time.

Ysabel

If you’re looking to woo your next date, take them to Ysabel. The Italian-inspired restaurant’s sleek, modern decor combined with yet another patio full of twinkling lights makes for a romantic setting like no other. Ysabel is on the finer side of dining experiences in WeHo, so you’re likely to see an influx of designer ensembles at the host stand. I definitely felt slightly underdressed the first time I showed up in jeans.

Basically, you’re in for an upscale meal. The good news is that the food is actually worth the hefty price tag. The hand-cut spaghetti is so good that, honestly, it’s the only entreé I’ve ordered. It’s tossed in kale and Marcona almond pesto and topped with a soft poached egg. I still remember my first bite of this earthy pasta dish – mmm. Luckily, I’ve always gone to Ysabel with friends who let me try a bite of their main courses. If you like seafood, you’ll love the spinach and cheese tortellini with roasted shrimp, sun-dried tomatoes, and parsley.

As for the appetizers, the spicy tuna tartare, multigrain flatbread, and brussels sprouts can do no wrong. Of course, Italian goes best with a glass of wine. Ysabel’s extensive wine list is sure to quench your thirst. If you’re not one for a savvy B, then one of the many cocktails should do the trick.

Check out the full Ysabel menu here.

Laurel Hardware

Laurel Hardware is the speakeasy version of a classy sit-down restaurant. From the outside, it looks like a beat-up old hardware store (hence, the name). On the inside, though? You’ll find a chic, dimly lit restaurant and bar that gives off major NYC vibes. Keep walking past the stocked bar and high-top tables, and you’ll find yet another charming patio with flowers and lights strung on trees galore. Are you sensing a theme here? I guess the year-round great weather in LA makes for the ideal patio dining scenario.

Aside from the undeniably hip atmosphere, Laurel Hardware also has a delicious selection of farm-to-table new American fare. The crispy shrimp appetizer is a good place to start. The spicy, tangy sharable is made with shishito peppers, pickled tomatillos, and chili aioli. It’s the zesty kick you need to start your meal on a high note. Follow the crispy shrimp with one of the many pleasurable main courses, which include a variety of salads, pizzas, pasta, and large plates. The ricotta tortellini is quite literally life-changing. Cheese, breadcrumbs, pesto sauce – so much yes.

For something hardy, the pan-seared branzino is a must-order. It’s paired with rainbow chard, cauliflower puree, capers, and lemon. It’s one savory dish with lots of textures intertwined. You’re sure to need a luscious libation to combat the saltiness. Fortunately, Laurel Hardware has a long list of fine wines and signature cocktails. The frozen lavender margarita is exactly the flowery drink you need to match the fairytale-like environment on the patio. The boozy refresher consists of Cazadores Reposado, Cointreau, lavender, and lemon. One of Laurel Hardware’s most unique drinks is the LA Manhattan, a combination of rose black tea steeped old forester, Alessio, cassis, and ginger.

No matter what your alcohol preferences might be, you’re sure to find a cocktail to your liking on the menu.

Browse the Laurel Hardware menu here.

Zinqué

In the thick of the WeHo neighborhood on Santa Monica Boulevard is the ultra-trendy yet intimate Zinqué restaurant. It’s a smaller space, but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in ambiance. Upon arrival, you’ll quickly notice its relaxed, charming environment. What I love about Zinqué is that you can show up in a dress and stilettos or jeans and sneakers. You can make the experience whatever you want, whether it’s a casual happy hour or a stylish dinner out.

Le Bowl seems to be the restaurant’s most popular dish, and for good reason. The fan-favorite dish is made with brown rice, avocado, tomatoes, arugula, comté, parmesan, sriracha mayo, and chicken or frittata. It’s light and healthy but still delivers a blast of flavors and textures. The tartines, flatbreads, and charcuterie plates are also a great choice, especially if you want something to share with the table. Everything on the menu is best paired with a glass of wine, and Zinqué’s extensive wine list has plenty to offer. However, the drink menu also features a handful of bubbles, beer, and signature cocktails.

Check out Zinqué’s brunch and dinner menus here.

E.P. & L.P.

I’ll be honest, I’ve spent more time on E.P. & L.P.‘s rooftop bar than I have in the actual restaurant. It’s a hotspot for late-night mingling, overpriced margaritas, and city views (a few of my favorite things). While I love the rooftop shenanigans, the restaurant has earned a well-deserved spot on this list, too. The contemporary restaurant serves modern American fare from a seasonal menu that features many local California-grown ingredients.

With appetizers like caviar and oysters, as well as expertly prepared entreés on the menu, the options are a tad pricey. However, the experience, fresh meal, and first-hand access to the rooftop bar for post-dinner drinks make the hefty check worth it. I wouldn’t come here for an everyday dinner, but it’s somewhere to keep in mind for birthday celebrations or special anniversaries.

If you’re ready to treat yourself and indulge in a memorable meal, order the gnocchi lobster, which is a plate of fresh gnocchi with sautéed Maine lobster, golden tomato, Calabrian chili, and basil. It’s safe to say it beats my usual frozen gnocchi from Trader Joe’s. If you’re not a seafood fan, try the Niman Ranch pork chop schnitzel. It’s marinated with peppers, pickled mustard, capers, and basil. Yum.

Toca Madera

Toca Madera is one of my most recent WeHo restaurant discoveries. I had driven past it many times and was continually intrigued by the crowds of young, overdressed people I saw waiting outside to be seated. I finally decided to see what the hype was all about, and I now fully understand why it’s always packed to the brim. It has the aesthetic of a classy, stylish restaurant but with the liveliness of a bustling late-night bar. There are 20-somethings flirting at the bartop, groups of hungry guests passing apps around their tables, and by the end of the night, a fire eater and dancer might even turn up to perform (to say my jaw dropped mid taco bite is an understatement).

Toca Madera’s nearly 30-page drinks menu speaks to the party vibes that seep through the restaurant. If you’re a lightweight like me, I’d recommend Ubering so you can try more than one beverage. You need to sip on one of the uniquely curated cocktails. Being that it’s a Mexican-inspired restaurant, I chose one of the many flavored margaritas on my first visit. I went with the guava margarita, made with Avion Silver, Combier, guava, thyme, and lime. It was the ultimate combination of sweet and citrus.

The Toca Madera food menu features all your usual Mexican fixings, including fresh AF guacamole, upscale tacos, and street corn. I ordered the white prawn tacos and didn’t regret it a bit. The corn tortillas were filled with sautéed shrimp marinated in garlic, lime, and white wine, jalapeño cabbage, avocado-tomatillo salsa, and cilantro. My tastebuds loved the tanginess. In addition to the expected entreés, Toca Madera also has a raw bar featuring fishy favorites like Baja style poke and ceviche.

Athlete Heat Index: Taking Stock Of The NBA’s Hottest Names Before The Start Of The Season

Welcome back to UPROXX’s Athlete Heat Index, where sports marketing executive and self-described “brand geek” Michael Ehrlich ranks athletes by the strength of their personal brands.

The latest ranking is inspired by the NBA’s 75th season tipping off on October 19th, the league’s first full 82 game regular season since the 2018-19 campaign.

With such a historic season ahead, full of “75 top players of all-time” lists and the league’s massive new “NBA Lane 75” marketing campaign featuring basketball legends of past and present, it’d be easy (and boring) to list the biggest names in the game – LeBron, Giannis, Durant, etc. – and rattle off how strong their personal brands are.

Instead, we analyze the players who took the biggest leaps this offseason and are poised for legendary status of their own.

Here is my starting five of the strongest NBA athlete brands heading into the new season:

5. Klay Thompson, Golden State Warriors

The last time Thompson was on the court, it was Game 6 of the 2019 Finals and the Warriors’ historic championship run was coming to an end at the hands of the Raptors. After Achilles and ACL tears shelved Thompson for the past two seasons, most personal brands would take a major hit not being in the spotlight. But this Splash Bro isn’t your typical personality.

While some athlete injury recovery processes have led to inspirational and intense workout content, brand commercials or marketing campaigns, Thompson’s authentic quirkiness shined during his rehab – further distinguishing him amongst a league full of strong personal brands – while not even performing on the court for two years.

His Instagram Live sessions while boating in the San Francisco Bay to workouts at the Warriors facility took on iconic status, even getting recreated by pop culture/hip hop royalty. Starting out swimming, kayaking and ultimately upgrading to his own boat, Thompson’s aquatic adventures was among the most engaging social media content of the NBA offseason. His stream of consciousness commentary – about life, basketball and the future – while traversing the waters led to a lip-sync recreation from Drake, further crossing over the Thompson brand into the pop culture landscape.

Once Thompson was back on land though, his unique personality continued to take shape via his Jackie Moon from “Semi-Pro”-inspired workouts, complete with headband, short shorts and trick shots – committing to a bit he began on Halloween in 2018.

In such a challenging time for him physically and professionally, Thompson has made rehab and recovery look fun. His timetable for a return to the court will be one of the top headlines as the season tips and as the Warriors get back to their winning ways, the narrative around Thompson putting them over the top will continue to build.

A Comeback Player of the Year campaign will no doubt be in order, but regardless of how he performs on the court, Thompson’s personal brand has continued to rise even without stepping foot on the hardwood.

4. LaMelo Ball, Charlotte Hornets

The reigning NBA Rookie of the Year came into the league already one of the most intriguing up and coming personal brands, due to his massive social media footprint – with a follower count and engagement rate that outpaced All-Star players and team accounts – his highlight reel style of play and his famous family.

His unique basketball journey – which took him from a high school junior to playing professionally in Lithuania and Australia to the NBA Draft – only added to the uniqueness of the youngest Ball brother’s personal narrative.

Every move the entire Ball family makes garners headlines, opinions and haters so there were certainly critics that didn’t think LaMelo’s game or body would hold up against top competition in the NBA. But once he hit the floor for the Hornets, his flashy skillset was on full display and he made an immediate impact.

His style of play parallels his off-court look – the bright color wardrobe, massive chains that mirror his tattoo designs, his grills, sunglasses and neon Lamborghini – but that alone doesn’t build a unique brand.

Ball’s partnership with Puma further tapped into his motto of being “1 of 1” and throughout his rookie season, the brand teased an upcoming signature sneaker to come, a rarity for such a younger player. Their Shorty Awards-winning social media campaign showcasing the on and off court talents that make Ball “not from here” continued to set him apart amongst his NBA peers.

Prior to the new season, Puma unveiled Ball’s debut shoe the bright red MB. 01, the brand’s first signature model since Vince Carter in 1999.

An offseason GQ feature on Ball accurately summed up his instant impact on and off the court for the league, calling him “the avatar of its future.”

League brass has certainly taken notice as they included Ball in the “NBA Lane 75” commercial, a sign that even after just one injury-shorted season, he’s already considered a future pillar of the NBA.

Ball and the Hornets are definitely on the rise and an increase in national televised games this season will only help bring more attention his way, further connecting his legitimate skillset with his polarizing personal brand.

3. Luka Dončić, Dallas Mavericks

At just 22, twice an All-Star starter and first team All-NBA member (the youngest to do so), Dončić is a triple-double threat every night, a top fantasy pick and an MVP candidate heading into the new season.

His on-court accolades speak for themselves, but he’s been one of the most improved personal brands off the court and poised for further mainstream breakout this season.

Hailing from Slovenia, his own brand has a built-in global audience and scale that continues to expand his narrative and makes him that much more attractive for corporate partnerships. Transitioning from an “international man of mystery” of sorts when he entered the league to now a bonafide superstar, Dončić’s marketing portfolio has begun to take shape– from Jordan Brand to Panini to BioSteel.

After his incredible third season with the Mavericks, Dončić carried the Slovenia National Team in its first-ever Olympic appearance in men’s basketball to within one point of the gold medal game putting up ridiculous stats the entire tournament, further cementing himself on the international stage.

When 2K Sports announced Dončić as the featured cover athlete on their new NBA 2K22 game – an honor every season, but especially ahead of the league’s 75th – they explained his selection as wanting to “inspire more international basketball players to pursue their goals.” Dončić’s cover even featured a design and color scheme honoring the Slovenian flag and as part of his 2K22 relationship, Dončić refurbished courts in his hometown, including where he practiced as a kid.

Dončić’s brand narrative has begun to infuse a bit of fun as seen when announcing his partnership with BioSteel as his first equity investment. The Mavs star created a tongue-in-cheek LinkedIn profile listing himself as their Global Chief Hydration Officer and featuring “Basketball” under the Skills and Endorsement section. A unique way to build association between talent and brand, that garnered a groundswell of positive conversation across social media and editorial.

To further build his brand portfolio, Dončić signed with Hollywood talent agency WME for representation across brand partnerships, talent ventures, content, digital and social strategy, a clear sign that he is serious about continuing to build his footprint across new avenues.

Heading into the new season, Dončić’s on and off court brand is front and center across the sports landscape. Sports Illustrated’s NBA preview issue featured him – and our number 1 ranked athlete brand – stating “the future is now” as the two players are at the forefront of a wave of young stars who will shape the league’s future.

It’s yet to be determined if an MVP season and deep playoff run are in the cards for Dončić, but he will certainly continue to elevate his off-court portfolio and has taken steps to further establish his unique brand narrative in and out of basketball.

2. Devin Booker, Phoenix Suns

Booker’s on-court performance over the last two seasons – All-Star appearances, an undefeated stay in the NBA Bubble in 2020, a dramatic run to the NBA Finals in 2021 and his first Olympics – certainly elevated him to the upper echelon of players, but this offseason his personal brand followed suit.

With all eyes on the Suns in the playoffs and Finals – a team that hadn’t earned much media coverage so far in Booker’s career – the All-Star guard’s unique brand elements were on full display.

While some/most NBA players use the pre-game tunnel walk as a fashion show to highlight their personal styles, Booker created a whole new trend by pulling up to the arena with a variety of vintage cars, earning broadcast and social media coverage each time.

His fashion and sneaker game is also elite – earning consistent coverage in GQ and a recent SLAM Magazine “Kicks” cover – but owning a unique differentiator in a crowded space made him truly stand out. Media and fans began to anticipate his arena arrival to see what car he was driving, as this became Booker’s “thing.”

This trend continued in the league’s “NBA Lane 75” campaign where Booker was not only featured in a vintage car, but had the most coveted spot in the commercial, paying tribute to his idol, the late Kobe Bryant with a salute to a large mural of the legend.

Booker’s connection to Bryant runs deeps – he writes “Be Legendary” on his Kobe shoes before every game (that was Kobe’s note to him after his last game vs. the Suns) and now has the phrase tattooed on his arm. Prior to shooting his Kobe salute in the league’s campaign, Booker asked Bryant’s wife Vanessa for her blessing. His relationship to the Bryant family is an authentic, organic and genuine way for him to continue to honor his idol.

But beyond everything basketball-related, it’s Booker’s romantic relationship that has put his brand over the top outside of the game. Over the years, there has been much talk about the “Kardashian/Jenner effect” on athletes who are romantically connected to the famous family – but Booker’s relationship to Kendall Jenner seems like it’s working. Yes, they are consistently photographed by paparazzi and garner a ton of coverage in the tabloids and on social media, but it all is positive – zero drama, zero fuss. They appear genuinely happy and Booker’s brand audience and following has now extended well beyond the sports landscape.

Heading into the new season – and for the first time in his career – the expectations are high for the Suns and Booker. He can continue to shape his own narrative while staying authentic to himself, his game, his style and his relationships.

1. Trae Young, Atlanta Hawks

No player in the league had a stronger breakout season, playoffs and offseason than Trae Young. The combination of his on-court success, dramatic playoff moments on the biggest stages, launching his own signature sneaker and making a heel turn to “villain,” is a case study in personal brand development.

Even before his epic year, Young’s below-the-rim style of play – at a slender 6’1” – made him more approachable from a fan and brand level, similar to when Steph Curry came on the scene. The old adage that “big men don’t sell shoes” in regards to marketing, still rings true, because the general consumer – especially youth players – can’t relate to 7-footers but my 6-year-old nephew for example, loves Young and asked for a jersey for his birthday, but has zero connection to Atlanta or the Hawks. He just appreciates that Young is small, confident and dominates against much bigger opponents. This perspective extends amongst fans and potential corporate partners alike.

Young’s major coming out party was against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden in the playoffs, where he took on the role of Reggie Miller from the 90’s as enemy number one knocking the home team out. His dominating play, fan taunting and unique “ice cold Trae” celebration – another amazing brand differentiator – on one of sports’ biggest stages was huge for his narrative evolution.

After the season, Young returned to MSG for WWE SmackDown where he was met with boos from fans and after teaming up with the “bad guys” was ultimately thrown out of the wrestling action, further cementing his new “New York villain” narrative.

The offseason brand momentum expanded with the debut of the adidas Trae Young 1, which he revealed on-court during his dramatic playoff run. In GQ’s coverage of the sneaker launch, they stated that Young has “reached wrestling villain status,” the perfect continuation of his narrative.

Heading into the new campaign, Young shared Sports Illustrated’s NBA preview issue with Dončić further connecting the two stars who were traded for each other on draft night in 2018 and setting up a potential similar career-long rivalry narrative a la Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. The Hawks and Mavs stars’ brands will continue to grow as a result of this association with each other, both playing off of each other’s successes.

Now as one of the faces of the future of the league, a signature sneaker athlete and in some basketball circles a “villain,” Young’s personal brand momentum is stronger than anyone in the NBA and will continue to grow with his on and off-court evolution this season and beyond.
