After 90 minutes of regulation, half an hour of extra time, and penalty kicks, New York City Football Club took down the Portland Timbers to win MLS Cup. Despite the Timbers playing host in Providence Park, one of the cathedrals of American soccer, NYCFC was able to head west and lift a trophy for the first time in the club’s history.
It was a cagey affair with both teams struggling to unlock the other, but ultimately, the visitors were able to strike first. With just minutes left until halftime, NYCFC got a set piece from several yards outside of the Timbers’ box. Maxi Moralez whipped in a ball that connected with the head of the league’s joint most prolific goalscorer this season, Valentin Castellanos. While one can easily argue that Portland’s Steve Clark should have done better, Castellanos was able to get enough on the ball to make life difficult on the Timbers’ keeper. The ball ended up rolling into the corner of the net to put the Pigeons up, 1-0.
The story of the second half was Portland’s total inability to really challenge New York. Plenty of credit was due to NYCFC, but the Timbers just could not find the final moment of magic necessary to draw level.
And then, that moment arrived. With no more than a few seconds remaining in injury time, Claudio Bravo lofted a ball into the box that found the head of Yimmi Chara. His sole goal seemed to be to get it into a dangerous area and hope something happens, and after Larrys Mabiala rose high to get his chest to it, a mad scramble ensued that ended in Felipe Mora getting as clean a shot on target as you’ll see. Sean Johnson couldn’t do anything about it, and as a result, Providence Park exploded.
NYCFC appeared to have a legitimate point about Mabiala getting to the ball at the expense of Maxime Chanot, who lost his mind and wanted a foul called. But it was not given, and as a result, the two sides needed some more time to determine a winner. Neither Portland nor NYCFC were able to break the deadlock, though, with the visitors failing to create a major scoring opportunity and Johnson denying Cristhian Paredes when the home side had its best chance of the extra frames.
In penalties, Castellanos buried the first attempt for NYCFC, while Mora was denied by Johnson right from the jump. That edge for the visitors was short-lived, as Clark stopped Alfredo Morales … but Johnson came up huge his next time out, denying Timbers legend Diego Valeri.
After Moralez beat Clark and Santiago Moreno became the first Portland player to beat Johnson, precocious Brazilian Talles Magno scored to start round four and put the Timbers in a situation where they needed to be perfect to have a chance. Paredes held up his end of the bargain by converting his penalty, but New York City sent center back Alexander Callens up with a chance to win. The Peru international was cold as ice, and as a result, NYCFC are champions.
Today was an important day for Megan Thee Stallion as she graduated from Texas Southern University. She left the HBCU with a Bachelor’s degree in Health Administration and was one of the school’s 843 graduates who received their degrees on Saturday. Megan even invited her fans to tune in to the school’s livestream of the commencement ceremony to watch her cross the stage. Her infectious energy was on full display as she was all smiles while interacting with TSU’s faculty and fellow graduates. TSU even shared an image of Megan with the school’s 13th President Dr. Lesia Crumpton-Young to their Instagram account.
With her graduation from TSU becoming official today, Megan fulfills a promise she made to the women in her life, including her late mother, to finish school. “I want to get my degree because I really want my mom to be proud,” she said during an interview with People last year. “I want my big mama to be proud. She saw me going to school before she passed. My grandmother that’s still alive used to be a teacher, so she’s on my butt about finishing school.” She added, “I’m doing it for me, but I’m also doing it for the women in my family who made me who I am today.”
As for what’s next, Megan may get started on the health facility she wants to build in her hometown of Houston, which she spoke about during a 2018 Billboard interview. “That’s still the plan,” she said. “And you know how it’s so hard to get a job after college? So I thought it would be super easy for my classmates if I just opened up something that they could go get a job at.”
You can check out some pictures and videos from Megan’s graduation day above.

This past Friday, Juice WRLD estate and record label released the late rapper’s second posthumous album, Fighting Demons, which featured appearances from Justin Bieber, Polo G, Trippie Redd, Eminem, and BTS’ Suga. They also dropped a new video for the album’s intro track, “Burn,” which finds Juice in the studio with friends as he raps about his battles with addiction and anxiety. It also shows an asteroid attacking Earth, leaving people scrambling for shelter as the world around them burns.
Juice’s “Burn” video and Fighting Demons arrive ahead of the upcoming HBO Max documentaryJuice WRLD: Into The Abyss, which will premiere on the platform on December 16 and delves into his struggles with mental health. “When you’re a fan of this sh*t, you look at it from a certain perspective,” he can be heard saying in a trailer for the upcoming film. “But when you’re in it, you see it for what it really is. I’m still happy I could change the world, but… It’s not what it looks like.”
He continues, “If you’ve got anxiety [or] depression, they all look at you like you’re crazy; that’s not how it should be [but] that’s how it is, and that needs to change. And hopefully I’m one of those people that could bring that change.”
You can watch the video for “Burn” above.
Fighting Demons is out now via Grade A Productions and Interscope. Get it here.
The University of Oregon entered college football’s coaching carousel earlier this month when Mario Cristobal left the team to take the top job at his alma mater, the University of Miami. After a search that took a little less than a week, it appears that the Ducks have their man.
According to a report by Chip Towers of the Atlanta Journal Constitution on Friday, the team made the decision to hire Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning. In the aftermath, there were conflicting reports about whether or not a deal was actually going to get done, but on Saturday afternoon, Bruce Feldman of The Athletic confirmed that Lanning will head to Eugene.
It’s an interesting hire for Oregon, as Lanning has never been a head coach in his football career. He has, however, established himself as one of the best defensive minds in the sport, someone who has experience coaching under Nick Saban and Kirby Smart. After spending a year as Georgia’s outside linebackers coach, Lanning was named the program’s defensive coordinator in 2019, and during his time at the helm, the Bulldogs have had perhaps the most ferocious defense in the sport. This season, in particular, moving the ball and scoring on Georgia’s defense was quite difficult: the team was first nationally in scoring defense, second in total defense, and third in both passing and rushing defense.
After a few weeks of promotion, Drake and Ye took over the Los Angeles Coliseum for their benefit concert for Larry Hoover, and it was quite the spectacle. Ye took the stage a performed a number of hits from his 15-year catalog, including “Jesus Walks,” “All Falls Down,” “Good Life,” “All Of The Lights.” Drake appeared later on and mostly stuck to songs from Certified Lover Boy like “Knife Talk,” “Way 2 Sexy,” and “Girls Wants Girls.” All in all, it was a great show that left viewers extremely satisfied, but according to TMZ, federal officials are shocked by it all.
The report says officials are “surprised” that Drake and Ye held the concert at all. Hoover, a Chicago native and founder of the Gangster Disciples gang, is currently serving a state-sanctioned sentence of 150-200 years for a 1973 murder and six life sentences for running a criminal organization from prison. Federal officials can’t seem to understand why Drake and Ye would want to support a man who they called “the worst of the worst.”
While the odds of the concert leading to Hoover’s freedom are minimal, it did help to end Drake and Ye’s longtime beef. The rappers reconciled weeks before the show thanks to some help from J Prince, and it was good to see them showing each other some brotherly love onstage.
Any hopes of seeing Zion Williamson play basketball any time soon took a major hit on Saturday afternoon. According to a report by Shams Charania and Will Guillory of The Athletic, Williamson’s surgically-repaired right foot is experiencing some lingering soreness, and as a result, the team has opted to shut him down for an undetermined period of time.
Pelicans’ Zion Williamson continues to experience soreness in his surgically-repaired right foot and is likely to be shut down from basketball activities for time being, sources tell me and @WillGuillory.
Andrew Lopez of ESPN confirmed the report, adding that the bone in Williamson’s foot hasn’t healed in the way that the team expected.
Zion Williamson will be dialed back in his rehab process from surgery on his fractured right foot. Williamson’s bone has not healed the way the team expected and he will take some time off before proceeding, sources tell ESPN.
Eventually, New Orleans released a statement that said the bone has in fact regressed.
“After experiencing persistent soreness in his right foot, Zion Williamson underwent medical imaging which showed a regression in the bone healing of his fifth metatarsal,” the team said. “As a result, the volume and intensity of his training will be reduced for an extended period to help allow for further bone healing. Additional updates will be provided as warranted.”
Pelicans executive David Griffin announced at media day that Williamson needed surgery on his foot over the summer, but did not explicitly say when that occurred. The team had hoped that his recovery process would lead to him suiting up in time for New Orleans’ season opener, that has not happened, and instead, Williamson has yet to play in a game this season. Earlier this month, there was a report that Williamson was getting all geared up to participate in his first full practice, but soreness in his foot led to the team opting to take things slow. At one point, a report indicated that Williamson had gotten above 300 pounds this offseason, which left the team concerned.
Now, the Pelicans are a team that has struggled to win games — they’re 8-20 on the year, which puts them in last place in the Western Conference — and will have to wait until their best player is able to take the floor.
It’s been three-and-a-half years since we lost Anthony Bourdian, the chef-turned-TV star and worldwide traveler, taking viewers on intimate excursions into cultures both well-known and far-flung. Though he spent the last couple decades very much in the spotlight, we’re still learning things about him. For instance, did you know he had a secret Reddit account? And that he would talk smack about Steven Seagal and praise Joe Rogan’s strength?
A new piece by Rolling Stone delves into the many posts of Reddit user “NooYawkCity,” who turned out to be Bourdain himself. His favorite forum was for Brazilian jiujitsu, which he began practicing — and excelling at — over his last several years. He never outright admitted his identity, but fellow Redditers eventually came to recognize his hyper-articulate and punchy musings as belonging to the author of No Reservations and the host of numerous travel shows.
The Stone piece points out that it was Bourdain without an editor, without the realization that the vast public may see it. “This was the truest Anthony Bourdain, writing simply for the sake of it, unburdened by his reputation,” writes journalist Alexander Darwin.
Bourdain mostly kept himself to the forum “bjj,” posting about his progress with the martial art. But he sometimes ventured elsewhere, offering very pointed opinions on a variety of matters. For instance, another passion of his was cinema, and he would talk about his love of movies made in Vietnam. But he also discussed movie stars he didn’t like, like the possible worst host of SNL.
“[Steven] Seagal is a ‘deadly mofo’ if you get between him and the all you can eat pasta bar,” Bourdain once wrote. “The hair is definitely dead though. A wad of that Dynell weave comes undone during a fight with Lightning Chunks of Death and you could choke.”
But he heaped praise upon Joe Rogan, at least as a pugilist. When someone discussed whether or not the NewsRadio alum-turned-podcaster could take Wesley Snipes in a fight, he had a very educated take. “I can tell you from personal experience you do NOT want Rogan’s arms anywhere near your neck,” Bourdain said. “He cranks. Hard. And enjoys it while he does it. He’d destroy Snipes. Like hospitalize destroy.”
Bourdain had a vicious tongue and you didn’t want to be on the other side of it. One time a troll came up with a highly offensive idea for a reality show, where ex-addict celebrities are given drugs to relapse on. Bourdain, who struggled with a drug habit he had in his younger days, was not amused.
“You are a terrible human being,” he wrote. “You richly deserve to lose sphincter control and seep slowly, steadily and fragrantly into your My Little Pony undies for the rest of your life.”
Bourdain also wrote about how Brazilian jujitsu had become an obsession, to the point that he kicked two of his other dangerous loves: drinking and smoking cigarettes.
“Drug free but a drinker until I started BJJ — at which point the inevitability of getting smashed every day made alcohol a much less attractive option and cigarettes out of the question,” he wrote. “Frankly, BJJ as an addiction has in many ways replaced my previous ones.”
…Shit, now I’m questioning the presents I bought for my new guy. BRB, I need to check some return policies.

After a two-week break, Rodrigo will head to Europe for 15 shows across the continent. The Sex and the City revival And Just Like That… dropped last week, and it instantly made news. There was that big surprise, which we won’t spoil here. There was a simple explanation about why it lacked Kim Cattrall’s Samantha Jones. And there was also our last view of Stanford Blatch, gay bestie to Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw. Willie Garson, who played the stylish character on 27 episodes and in both movies, sadly passed away in September at the age of 57 following a battle with pancreatic cancer — something he kept mostly private from his colleagues.
As per Deadline, Cynthia Nixon, the franchise’s resident Miranda Hobbes, told reporters on Friday that they had no idea what the actor was going through — with one exception.
“The death of Wille Garson was obviously, completely unlooked for, unknown,” Nixon said. “Sarah Jessica was the only one that knew he was sick when we were filming until things became undeniable and then we were told. Thankfully we were able to shoot with him not just before he was sick but after so it could be something we could discuss and listen to him about. I know that was very important for us and I think it was something that was important to him, too — not to be hiding that from us anymore.”
Nixon added, “As Charlotte [Kristin Davis] says, ‘Death is a part of life,’ but it does remind us of how precious our loved ones are to us.”
Stanford can be seen during the funeral scene for [SPOILER]. It’s currently unknown how the series will handle the death of one of its most beloved supporting characters. In the meantime, the first two episodes of And Just Like That… are now streaming.
