Berner — Gotti

Despite being recently diagnosed with colon cancer, the San Franciso native completed this collection with the permission of the Gotti family to sample the late mob boss’ voice. He continues to move quietly and make big moves, tapping unexpected collaborators like Future, Rod Wave, and even El-P alongside surefire fellow mafioso rap lovers Nas, Rick Ross, and the Griselda crew.

Cozz — Fortunate [EP]

Returning from a nearly four-year hiatus, the Dreamville rapper from Inglewood bares his soul on his latest EP, highlighting his growth in the intervening years since 2017’s Effected and revealing his scars. Much like his label brothers, he’s a rapper’s rapper who makes the most of the project’s tight runtime.

MFnMelo & SqueakPIVOT — En Route [Deluxe]

Turning around the deluxe edition of their June release to close out the year, Pivot Gang’s MFnMelo manages to pay fitting homage to the group’s late producer with a handful of new tracks reminiscent of their work on the group’s 2019 project, Don’t Sit With Us, right down to the posse cut highlight track, “Mood Swing.”

Nardo Wick — Who Is Nardo Wick?

Exploding into mainstream attention earlier this year with the breakout single “Who Want Smoke??” Floridian Nardo Wick capitalizes on the momentum with his debut project. He’s a chest-beating, distilled shot of adrenaline for an oversaturated rap scene who prefers to let his music do this talking — and he’s got plenty to say.

Polo G — Hall Of Fame 2.0 [Deluxe]

With 14 new tracks, Polo updates his first-ever no. 1 album while sticking to the formula that has worked so well so far. He even reunites with Lil Tjay, who was critical to his initial breakout thanks to their 2018 hit, “Pop Out,” on one of the new songs, proving that he can remain grounded even as he reaches the heights of success.

Tierra Whack — Rap? [EP]

While a three-song maxi-single may represent a paltry offering to rap fans starving for the follow-up to the paradigm-shifting Whack World, Rap? does enough to sate that hunger for time being — and suggest a more hearty collection is imminent.

The standout single from Gee’s new mixtape Bigger Than Life Or Death Part 2, “Misery” sees him gloating over those he’s bypassed during his rapid rise to stardom.

It’s BeatKing; turn it up and enjoy the results — which, if you’re unaware, are twerking and a sharp increase in the energy level of any given function. Don’t watch the video on your lunch break — it’s relatively safe for work but you might lose your appetite from the imagery.

Jackboy “What’s Mine Is Yours” Feat. Money Man

Jackboy’s precipitous rise continues as he drops another braggadocious single displaying his snappy cadence over a sparse but catchy beat alongside fellow rising star Money Man. Filmed at the Texas State Fair, the video showcases more of Jackboy’s shockingly down-to-earth personality.

Jay Bezzy — “Overseas” Feat. Sheff G & Sleepy Hallow

Although the two guest rappers are primarily best known for their thunderous drill hits, they slow things down to bring weight to Bezzy’s melodic ode to showing their ladies the finer things in life.

LBP Poody — “I’m The One”

LBP Poody dropped his new mixtape I’m The One on Friday, so it’s only natural to accompany the release with a video for the title track, a propulsive, defiant street stomper that shows off Poody’s relaxed but forceful flow.

ShooterGang Kony — “The Game” Feat. Kalan.FrFr

A warm, upbeat West Coast party jam, the feel-good vibes of the piano-laden beat are perfectly complemented by Kony smirking flow and Kalan’s velvety vocals.

Wiz Khalifa — “Pop The Trunk” Feat. Juicy J

Wiz and Juicy team up again for a return to the era when they ran radio. The song is the first from an upcoming joint project from the duo planned for release in 2022, while Wiz is also a week away from the release of his own new project, Wiz Got Wings.

A few days ago, Ed Sheeran and Elton John dropped the video for their new collaboration “Merry Christmas,” and the visual is full of classic overblown holiday imagery. It’s a cheery visual, but for a second while making it, Sheeran thought he was going to injure his collaborator.

In a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Sheeran said,

“We just shot a Christmas music video. Oh, mate. I almost killed him with a bell… On the video. There’s footage of, I’m dressed up as sort of sexy Santa Claus and I kick a present, but the present had a big metal bell on top of it. I showed him the footage of it today, because we slowed it down and the bell flew past his head and would’ve cracked him in the head. I’ll post it. David, Elton’s partner, said that you should post that. So, I will post it eventually, but it was one of these things, I had the video, I was like, ‘I got to show him this.’ But, man, the music video is wild. We’ve parodied all the great British music videos that came at Christmas.”

Then, yesterday, John was the one who shared the video. Sure enough, it is how Sheeran described it, as the bell soars right past his head as people off-camera look on in brief horror. John was a good sport about the whole thing, as he wrote while sharing the video, “Better luck next time, @edsheeran,” along with a laughing emoji. Sheeran shared John’s post and added a laughing emoji of his own.

CNN recently fired Chris Cuomo over his involvement in defending his brother, ex-New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, during his sexual harassment scandal. In the aftermath, Chris is said to be “livid,” and the cable news network is poking around for a replacement to fill those primetime shoes.

Former CNN host Brooke Baldwin — who left after a decade of service and following the cable news network’s decision to sideline her for 2020 election coverage — has a suggestion for her former employer. She’d like to finally see a woman on CNN at night, on a regular (not a guest) basis. That’s been the case over at MSNBC for several years (where Rachel Maddow reigns supreme) and at Fox News (where Laura Ingraham rolls with the right wing alongside the dudes). Yet at CNN, strangely, female on-air representation has been confined to daytime hours. So, Baldwin took to Instagram:

“I would like to see CNN put a woman in that 9 p.m. spot. Not me. I’ve moved on. But there are plenty of brilliant women they could choose from… CNN prime time has dominated by male hosts. And ya’ll, it’s nearly 2022. Wouldn’t you like to see a woman successfully lead in primetime?”

Baldwin stressed that she has the “utmost respect” for her former colleagues, and yep, she mades a stark point. Why on earth hasn’t CNN gone there yet? It’s an odd move in terms of inclusivity (and from a left-leaning outlet), but Brianna Keilar more than fits the bill for the somewhat opinionated slant that CNN favors at night. As for Baldwin, she recently penned Huddle: How Women Unlock Their Collective Power and has, as she says, “moved on” from her CNN days.

Adam McKay’s new movie, Don’t Look Up, is about two astronomers (played by Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio) who try to warn mankind about an incoming comet that will destroy Earth. But what they find is no one cares. “There’s a 100 percent chance that we’re all going to die,” Lawrence’s character warns the public on a local news show before storming off the set, as seen in the trailer. Instead of anyone taking her seriously, she’s called a “yelling lady” by the overly cheery anchor, who also hits on DiCaprio.

It’s probably obvious, but Don’t Look Up is about climate change, which posed a dilemma for writer and director Adam McKay: how do you end a movie about something that has a “100 percent chance” of happening? Do you lean into the inevitable, or do you subvert expectations? In an interview with GQ, McKay explained his process.

“Someone asked me why I made the movie. And really, you could almost say it’s one simple reason, which is we’ve watched thousands and thousands of movies, whether they’re Marvel or action films or thrillers, and everything always works out in a nifty bow in the end, time after time, for decade after decade,” he said. “Clearly, [Don’t Look Up] is an analogy or an allegory for the climate crisis. And the idea that it doesn’t end with a nifty bow was the whole drive. I mean, that’s why I wrote the script.” McKay added:

“There was never one moment ever where it was going to end with the hero coming in to rescue the day. I don’t want to give it away, but I knew the nifty bow was never, ever going to be the case. I considered a slightly less definitive ending. I had one that was a little muddier, and it felt wrong.”

Don’t Look Up, which also stars Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Ron Perlman, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Cate Blanchett, Rob Morgan, and Meryl Streep, opens in select theaters on December 10 before hitting Netflix on December 24.

In one of the weirdest Beltway criticisms in recent memory, a new article has called out Vice President Kamala Harris for refusing to wear Bluetooth headphones because they’re a “security risk.” After going so far to call Harris “Bluetooth-phobic” in the headline, a real crack team of three Politico writers were required to detail the VP’s insistence on using wired headphones at all times:

In the oft meme-d video of Harris calling JOE BIDEN last November to congratulate him on winning the election (“We did it, Joe!”), she can be seen holding the tangle of wires from her headphones. In television interviews with MSNBC’s JOY REID last December and the co-hosts of ABC’s The VIEW in September, Harris is jacked in with wired headphones, as well. After casting the tie-breaking Senate vote on the American Rescue Plan in March, reporters captured Harris with wired headphones in hand. And during the campaign, she filmed campaign videos with the retro coils falling from her ears.

Here’s the thing though: Kamala is right. Wearing Bluetooth headphones are, in fact, a significant security risk, and her caution is not only warranted but necessary to her duties as vice president. After launching the odd attack, Politico‘s attempt to paint Harris as “Bluetooth-phobic” was not received well on social media where the publication and its writer were thoroughly dragged for completely missing the security angle, but also attempting to shade the vice president over her choice of headphones, which is all kinds of petty.

While laughing at Rudy Giuliani’s many, many, many public missteps (see: Four Seasons Total Landscaping… or marrying your cousin) and mortifying gaffes (remember the fart?) seems to almost have become the unofficial American pastime during the Donald Trump years, the man formerly known as “America’s Mayor” may have finally crossed the line from being funny-sad to just plain pathetic-sad. On Sunday, the former New York City Mayor—who is currently barred from practicing law in the Empire State, as well as Washington, DC—was among the esteemed attendees at a New York Young Republican Club gala.

Over the course of the evening, Giuliani became the target of Walter Masterson, a TikTok prankster—the same one who called Matt Gaetz a pedophile while posing with him—who got Rudy to smile at the camera while an edited version of M.C. Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This” played, but with the lyrics changed to keep repeating the word “pendejo,” Spanish for “idiot,” over and over. Rudy, blissfully unaware that he was being ruthlessly mocked, mugged for the camera.

Sadly, that wasn’t even the worst of it. Ron Filipkowski shared clips of the speech that someone presumably asked Rudy to give at the event, which wandered down several different roads but didn’t seem to have one unifying sentiment.

The Intelligencer’s Shawn McCreesh was on hand at the event, and described the scene as follows:

The crackpot crescendo reaches new decibels when Giuliani takes the stage. The words “NEW YORK YOUNG REPUBLICAN” hang ironically over his head as he whinges on about commies and Truman and Hitler and Stalin and child pornography and mafiosi and Bellevue and Chairman Mao. “THEY KILLED FEMALE BABIES,” he screams, and everyone looks a little confused. He calls the Bidens a “disgusting trailer trash” crime syndicate, and everyone in the room starts chanting “Let’s go Brandon!” He recites lines plucked from Hunter Biden’s hard drive and snarls, menacingly, “The New York Post! Not only did I give it to them, I shoved it down their throats.” He pauses and says again for emphasis: “I SHOVED IT DOWN THEIR THROATS.”

Selena Gomez has been a prominent pop star for about a decade now: So far, her career has yielded three No. 1 albums and a chart-topping single in 2019 with “Lose You To Love Me.” Despite all that success, Gomez somehow hadn’t earned a Grammy nomination until just recently, as her recent EP Revelación is up for Best Latin Pop Album at the 2022 ceremony. Getting your first Grammy nod is a major moment, and indeed, Gomez says she was moved by it.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight about Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, the Grammy nod was briefly mentioned and Gomez said, “Thank you so much. I cried like a little baby, I was very excited. I worked really hard on that project, so it was a lovely surprise. I’m very excited!”

Back in March, Revelación debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart, and at the time, Gomez spoke about how meaningful that was for her, saying, “I never go into anything expecting a No. 1 so I do not take it for granted. It’s always a bit nerve-racking before releasing any music because as artists we put so much of ourselves out there. For this EP specifically, I was the most nervous I have been in a long time because my heritage means so much to me and I have been talking about doing this for over ten years. I wanted it to be perfect. I am thrilled to see the response from my fans and also from people who might not have listened to my other music.”

This all comes after an interview this year when Gomez expressed disappointment in how her music was received and noted that she was considering retirement, saying, “It’s hard to keep doing music when people don’t necessarily take you seriously. I’ve had moments where I’ve been like, ‘What’s the point? Why do I keep doing this?’ ‘Lose You To Love Me’ I felt was the best song I’ve ever released, and for some people, it still wasn’t enough. I think there are a lot of people who enjoy my music, and for that I’m so thankful, for that I keep going, but I think the next time I do an album it’ll be different. I want to give it one last try before I maybe retire music.”

Texas realtor Jenna Ryan isn’t about to let a little thing like a 60-day prison sentence get her down. Ryan is one of more than 600 people arrested for inciting a riot at the Capitol on January 6th, but managed to stand out from the pack by using social media to brag that she took a private jet (a “PJ” to the uninitiated) to Washington, D.C. and to brashly declare that she was “Definitely not going to jail” because “I have blonde hair white skin a great job a great future.” After Ryan pleaded guilty to a Class B misdemeanor for parading, demonstrating or picketing within a Capitol building, that “great future” now entails a couple of months in the hoosegaw, which Ryan is determined to make the best of.

As Bloomberg reports, Ryan’s 60-day sentence is far less than what many of her fellow rioters received. Jacob Chansley, the so-called QAnon Shaman, will spend 41 months behind bars for his actions that day. But Ryan is apparently trying to look on the bright side of being whisked away to prison… which means treating it like it’s an overly regimented spa visit.

On Sunday, Ryan posted a video to her approximately 2800 TikTok followers, in which she stood in front of a full-length mirror and bizarrely preened for the camera while explaining that she will be reporting to prison in January:

“And the only thing I can see that’s good about having to go to prison is that I’m going to be able to work out a lot and do a lot of yoga and detox. And also I can’t eat because the food is awful, and there’s just no food. So hopefully they have, like, some protein shakes and, uh, some protein bars I think. Because you don’t want to eat, like, green bologna. Because that’s what they have to eat. So I’m going to end up losing weight in prison… So hopefully I’ll finally get down to my ideal weight, because I won’t be able to drink, I won’t be able to eat. I won’t be able to eat, like, stupid stuff like chips and all the stuff I eat sometimes.”

Ryan then proceeded to step on a scale and show viewers her current weight of approximately 170 pounds and note that if she’s able to get down to 140 pounds, “then it will be worth going to prison for 60 days. If I can lose 30 pounds? It would be so worth it.”

OK, so it’s not exactly The Zone. There’s no word on whether Ryan realizes you can also not eat chips while not being incarcerated, but whatever helps you sleep through the night.

Are Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home? The answer is, of course, ¯_(ツ)_/¯. Tom Holland, the current Spider-Man, claims that the old Spider-Men won’t appear in the 27th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (“It would be a miracle if they could have kept that from me,” he said), but fans aren’t buying what he’s selling. Either way, Holland is a fan of Maguire and Garfield, and in a recent interview on Jake’s Takes, he revealed his favorite scenes from their Spider-Man movies.

“Tobey’s movies, I love the final battle between him and the Goblin [from 2002’s Spider-Man]. I think something that I really wish we had done with our movies is kind of the tattered suit stuff. You know how he always has the rips in his costumes and the rips on the mask? I really like that because it brought a kind of realism to the injuries that Spider-Man can get,” he said. As for Garfield, Holland loves the skateboarding sequence from 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man. “I know that’s kind of far from what Peter Parker is, and it was kind of a bit of a step away, but I really enjoyed that sequence,” he explained. “I thought it was really fun. I thought the way they brought that aspect of Peter Parker’s life was really interesting and really fun.”

Holland must have misspoke. He obviously meant to say the basketball scene.

Spider-Man: No Way Home comes out on December 17.

With 2021’s Planet (i) and 2020’s I Was Born Swimming (her third and fourth albums), Squirrel Flower’s Ella Williams has been quickly building impressive sonic palette. Songs like the sprawling “I’ll Go Running” from the former and “Red Shoulder” from the latter show an artist with a distinct dexterity on the guitar and a booming voice that ranges to morph into different emotional arcs. Now, today, Williams has announced the latest addition to her catalog and it fits into a different spectrum altogether.

Out on January 28th, the Planet EP is a compilation of self-recorded demos of songs that were part of the Planet (i) sessions but were left off. Along with the announcement, two of the songs from the EP are out today. One is a hazy, re-verb soaked cover of Björk’s 1997 track “Unravel,” presented with a video of abstract lava flows. The other is entitled “Ruby At Dawn” and strikes a similar melancholy chord, albeit in a totally different soundscape.

Williams shared some thoughts in a statement on Planet:

“I’ve always felt that the pieces and process and secrets behind a finished record are the most important parts. Most of these songs showcase my own production and exact vision, my first time in a long time releasing music that I’ve produced alone. Releasing this EP is an exercise in self trust and experimentation. Not all songs need to be precious and kept for the exact right time, not all recordings need to be perfect.”
