A Chicago News Station Appears To Have Been Punked On Live TV By A Barfing Pseudo-Activist

When you book a guy who represents a movement that claims “Birds Aren’t Real,” you should probably be prepared for things to go south. And that’s exactly what happened on Chicago’s WGN Morning News when “activist” Peter McIndoe dialed in Thursday morning for a remote interview to discuss his conspiracy theory organization. As far as anchors Larry Potash and Robin Baumgarten could ascertain, Birds Are Real appears to be a satirical group that is actually highlighting the concerning abundance of conspiracy beliefs that have spread like wildfire in recent years.

However, it appears the group is interested in spoofing more than just crackpots as McIndoe proceeded to punk the newscasters by barfing up his coffee.

After McIndoe made sure his “puking” could be clearly heard on the show, the anchors gave him time to recuperate before realizing this whole thing was probably a setup. Via Mediaite:

Later in the program, Potash and Baumgarten wondered aloud if they had been “punked” by McIndoe, who is a fairly practiced hand at doing media appearances.

“I don’t think we really know for sure now. Kind of stuck in the middle there. We wish him the best,” Potash said, adding “You know, if we got punked. Shame on us. And if he’s really sick and he’s got an issue of some kind, we hope he’s okay.”

In a follow-up to his “apology” tweet for puking live on the air, McIndoe gave an update on his condition on Friday and figured out the likely source for his stomach problems: the government.

“Taking a day out in the woods to realign myself with the movement and get back on track,” McIndoe tweeted. “I’ve made mistakes. But this isn’t the past, this is the future. And I owe it to you to forge a better one. I do not want to make any claims but there was a targeted government poisoning.”

Danny McBride And Edi Peterson On Season Two Of ‘Righteous Gemstones’, Endless Ambition, And Church Fitness Crews

The Righteous Gemstones is back this Sunday (at 10 PM on HBO) with members of the megachurch made Gemstone family divided and Jesse (Danny McBride) firmly looking to upsize and let loose, playing with resorts, streaming services, and other things that typically stand out as the playthings of the elite. All that stands in his way are a few new threats, family infighting, and the need to steer clear of the claw of consequences that keeps grabbing at the whole family. No big deal, right?

According to McBride, (who we previously spoke with ahead of season one) this is “the richest world [he and his creative cohorts David Gordon Green and Jody Hill] have explored.” And though he always operates as though each season of every show will be its last (to push writers to “deliver something that feels whole”) there’s a desire to keep going with no cap on the ambition of what these characters can and will reach for. A fascinating position that feels incredibly ripe in these gluttonous times.

Ahead of this new season, we spoke with McBride and co-star Edi Patterson about that ambition, freeing John Goodman to throw some hands, the chemistry and power dynamic between the show’s central couples, Church power teams, ridiculous movie posters, and how Judy would torture her brother if she ever got to drive the family business.

Is there a cap on the ambition of the Gemstones?

Danny McBride: You know, I haven’t considered it. I feel like the Gemstones feel like the sky is the limit. You know, they feel like they have God on their side and that they can achieve whatever they want to set their minds to. And so I think it’s that boldness and that fearlessness that’s kind of weirdly noble about them, that they have this lack of self-image and they only see themselves as capable of whatever they want to put their minds to.

The production numbers, specifically when you’re singing, have been just great. What’s it like to just go all out with those?

Edi Patterson: Yeah, dude, it’s a blast because as we’re writing, we’ll sort of feel like when there should be something like that and sort of the vibe of what it should be. So sometimes it’s even from us writing the song that goes in there and then it starts to really get exciting then, or, we’ve got amazing musicians and composers that work with the show. And so sometimes it’s just like, “okay, we know Judy will do a great big gospel number here” and then we get this amazing song back. But every step of that process is really, really fun. I really like to sing and I really like to perform live. So it’s really fun for me to go on a Saturday when we aren’t filming, down to the studio and like record a thing for a bunch of hours and then come in and wear basically the outfit of an ice skater and have a bunch of girls dancing around me and like suddenly be in Vegas. I mean, it’s a blast dude.

What’s the relationship arc for BJ and Judy this season?

Edi Patterson: I think with Judy and BJ, I think we should talk about this, but I think that they’re made for each other and I think they’re, destined by God and the stars to be together. [Laughs] And I think that BJ understands Judy and knows that when she basically, fucking wilds out on him, I think he is maybe one of the only people on the earth that knows “oh, that’s not really at me. That’s just some weird stuff coming out.” So I think they get each other in a way that no one else would. And I think she probably adds some spice to his life that probably was not really there in previously. [Laughs]

Danny McBride: [Laughs] You made him hardcore.

Edi Patterson: Yeah. I made him hardcore.

Danny, the same question about Amber and Jesse and just where that relationship is right now. Power really seems to be unifying them.

Danny McBride: Yeah, you’re totally right. I mean, trust was broken last season and it was kind of up and questioned whether they were going to be able to make it. And so, coming into this season, they obviously made a choice to stay together and so what’s the first thing they do? They start being an example to other people of how perfect they are and how they’ve gotten through all this. And they’re trying to guide other people through the same shit. And it just seems so funny how people who could be so lacking in these basic things feel that they’re qualified to teach others, and that’s sort of just the glaring contradiction about the Gemstones. But the other thing that has aligned them is they found a sense of purpose in trying to kind of grab power to try to get the things that they want and the influence they want and that unites them. And I think when they work together, they actually prove to be a pretty good team together. And that’s kind of what we follow this season.

If Judy got the mantle and took power, what would she do to Jesse to exact revenge?

Edi Patterson: [Laughs] I think probably…

Danny McBride: [Laughs] C’mon, say it.

Edi Patterson: She would murder his wife. [Laughs]

Danny McBride: See, I was going to say she was going to stick something up his ass.

It could be both.

Edi Patterson: My first thought was she would do something to his ass or balls. [Laughs]

Danny, John Goodman is doing such great work this year, and we’re really getting to see an interesting bit of his backstory and see him get physical and kick some ass, breaking him out of the strictly paternal role and seeing him have a little fun. Can you talk a little bit about that?

Danny McBride: You know, my thought for Goodman was always that he had a more rough and tumble background than Amy Lee did. Amy Lee was like a child Christian singer. And so she had a more successful upbringing and I always liked the idea that Eli is new to money. Like it’s not something he’s grown up with. And so that’s part of what fuels his hunger for more and more is because he doesn’t want to be poor again. And so the idea that we get to see a little bit of that. We get to see about what he came from and it shows a nice image of where he’s landed and how different he is and how different he’s had to kind of disguise himself from what his roots are. It just felt like it was a cool playground for Goodman.

The church fitness crew idea… I don’t know if this was inflicted on you, but I have a faint memory, I may have blocked out a lot of it, but I was definitely exposed to something like that in school.

Danny McBride: Yes. [Laughs]

Like jumpsuits and everything. Is that where that came from?

Danny McBride: It did. Ripping up phone books… I saw that crew when I was a kid, and it really made an impression on me. I mean, I remember going home to my house and looking at the phone book and just being like “Jesus Christ this is very hard to rip this. These guys are so strong” and that idea was just always there about this power team. And we always played around with the idea in the first season that Kelvin sort of sees himself as this Christlike figure that, it’s really important to him to have apostles and have followers like Keith. And so it just seemed like a natural fit to put him with an army of muscular men.

The Romancing The Gemstones poster in the media room in episode two — can you break that down a little for me? Is that like a movie that was made or just a vanity poster?

Danny McBride: [Laughs] You know what’s funny is when we were scouting for the show in the pilot and we were looking at all these mansions around Charleston, South Carolina and trying to figure out the mansions for each of these characters… I went into one house and in their theater room, they had mocked up movie posters and put the faces of the families on the posters. [Laughs] And I was just like, “are you fucking kidding me? This is insane”. It seemed like such a silly thing to do, but then we had to log it into the memory bank and use it somehow.

‘Righteous Gemstones’ season two premieres Sunday on HBO at 10PM ET

Report: The Hawks Are An ‘Emerging Suitor’ For A Ben Simmons Trade

After a surprise run to the Eastern Conference Finals last summer, the Atlanta Hawks’ encore season hasn’t gone as planned. Among injuries, health and safety protocols, and regression from some key contributors, they find themselves 12th in the Eastern Conference at 17-20 and a full game back of a play-in spot.

Much of the issue revolves around their 26th-ranked defense, headlined by poor perimeter stoppers and inability to slow ball-handlers off the dribble. According to Marc Stein, Atlanta could be a team to monitor as the trade deadline approaches and Ben Simmons talks potentially heat up with the Philadelphia 76ers.

“It was suggested to me this week by one league source to keep an eye on Atlanta as an emerging suitor for Philadelphia’s Simmons,” Stein wrote.

This news comes after Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk conducted a radio interview earlier this week and questioned whether he’s taken the proper steps to assemble a winning roster by opting to largely run it back after last year.

“It’s my responsibility to put a product on the floor that can win,” Schlenk said, “and right now I’m not sure I have done that.”

Offensively, Simmons appears to be a murky complement to a rim-running, non-shooting center like Clint Capela, but the defensive fit is obvious. Simmons is a two-time All-Defensive First Team honoree and finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting last season. He’s arguably the NBA’s top perimeter defender. His skill-set would boost a struggling defense significantly.

Philadelphia has reportedly long sought a star like Bradley Beal or Damian Lillard if it trades Simmons. While Atlanta doesn’t have that caliber of player, Stein still sees a deal involving these clubs as a possibility.

“They have numerous enticing trade pieces to try to bring in other teams and expand the options in a theoretical multi-team trade construction,” Stein wrote. “The prospect of a Trae Young/Simmons combination, given the defense Simmons could bring to Atlanta and the devastating playmaking duo he could form with Young, would certainly intrigue me.”

Donald Trump’s Already-Shady TRUTH Social Is Reportedly Eyeing President’s Day For Its Official Launch Date

In late October, Donald Trump finally (sort of) made good on his threats to create his own social media site when he announced the birth of the unironically ironically-named TRUTH Social. In the days and weeks that followed, we learned that the former president may have violated securities laws in order to create the site and that it had used some pretty shady practices to get funded and attempt to go public. But none of the controversy has seemed to dampen Trump’s excitement to start TRUTHING (his equivalent of tweeting). And now it’s looking like both Donald and the public at large will be able to do that beginning President’s Day.

According to The Verge, a listing on the App Store notes the release date of TRUTH Social as being February 21, 2022—which just happens to be President’s Day. As Jay Peters writes:

“Truth Social looks very much like a Twitter clone, based on screenshots in the App Store listing. The profile page shown in one screenshot looks almost exactly like Twitter’s, and posts appear to have icons for replies, retweets, faves, and sharing. (Truth Social describes each individual post as a ‘truth’ in the app’s description. The retweet equivalent is apparently called a ‘re-truth.’)”

Trump, of course, was a devoted fan of Twitter for many years—until he was permanently banned one year ago, following the violent events at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. After embarrassingly trying to sneak his way back onto the platform, and being caught, he vowed to create his own social media site instead. That would be TRUTH, which was so poorly designed that pranksters managed to overrun the site and register with usernames like @donaldtrump and @mikepence before it had even launched a beta site. Here’s hoping that the official launch is just as exciting.

Trump Is Still Red-Faced And Completely Losing His Sh*t Over Biden’s Jan 6th Speech Essentially Accusing Him Of Attempting To Murder American Democracy

Former President Donald Trump is apparently still having a meltdown over President Joe Biden’s speech during a ceremony marking the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6th insurrection.

Yesterday, Biden addressed the nation, directly calling out Trump’s involvement in the attempted coup for the first time. As part of his speech, Biden said, “The former president of the United States of America has created and spread a web of lies about the 2020 election. He’s done so because he values power over principle because he sees his own interest as more important than his country’s interest.”

Trump, whose own former aides are now mobilizing against him, did not take the president’s remarks well, ordering his press rep Liz Harrington to share a statement (via her Twitter account) blasting both Biden and the Democratic party for using Jan. 6th as an excuse “for the most chilling assault on the civil liberties of American citizens in generations.”

“These radical leftists in Washington care NOTHING for American Democracy,” the statement read. “All they care about is control over you, and wealth and riches for themselves. But they are failing. No one believes them anymore. And the day is quickly coming when they will be overwhelmingly voted out of power. Joe Biden’s voice is now the voice of desperation and despair. His handlers gave him that speech to read yesterday because they know the unprecedented failures of his presidency and the left-wing extremism of the Pelosi-Schumer Congress have destroyed the Democrat Party.”

Trump also seemed to suggest that the attempted coup, carried out by his MAGA supporters, was some kind of hoax, saying, “Democrats cannot sustain the preposterous fabrications about January 6 much longer.”

Even odder, he went on to acknowledge the events of Jan. 6th, arguing that Democrats have blown the deadly uprising out of proportion.

“It [Jan. 6th] is being used to justify outrageous attacks on free speech, widespread censorship, de-platforming, calls for increased domestic surveillance, appalling abuse of political prisoners, labeling opponents of COVID lockdowns and mandates as national security threats, and even ordering the FBI to target parents who object to the radical indoctrination of their children in school,” Trump continued. “And this week, January 6 is also the Democrats’ excuse for trying to pass a radical Federal takeover of state election law. They are trying to BAN voter ID and other basic measures that can ensure the sacred integrity of the vote.”

So according to Trump, either Jan. 6th didn’t actually happen or it did, and it just wasn’t that bad. Either way, Trump is pretty pissed everyone keeps bringing up his little flirtation with treason and domestic terrorism.

Halle Berry Has Some Helpful Advice For Zoë Kravitz About Playing Catwoman

Halle Berry has a good sense of humor about Catwoman, a very bad movie. She doesn’t have any regret about taking the part because “it was one of the biggest paydays of my whole life, which, there’s nothing wrong with that. I don’t want to feel like, ‘Oh, I can only do award-worthy stuff.’ What is an award-worthy performance?” Berry even collected her Razzie Award for Worst Actress in person, which she later set on fire.

Catwoman is Selina Kyle’s only standalone movie, but two actresses have played her since: Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight and Zoë Kravitz in The Batman. In an interview with Variety‘s Awards Circuit podcast, Berry share the advice she would give to Kravitz about being Catwoman. “I’ll just tell her, get ready, they might come for you – but don’t let that affect your interpretation about who she thinks Catwoman might be,” she said, adding, “I personally think she’s going to be a wonderful Catwoman.”

Andrew Garfield got his bad Spider-Man movie redemption — Berry deserves a No Way Home of her own. She isn’t interested in reprising the role, or so she claims, but what if it also starred Kravitz and Hathaway? Throw Michelle Pfeiffer in there, too, and Lee Meriwether, who played Catwoman in 1966’s Batman. Into the cat-verse, I say.

The Batman opens on March 4.

Food Review: Are Taco Bell’s Crispy Chicken Wings Worth Tracking Down?

Taco Bell is doing wings. Did anyone ask them to? Absolutely not. No one even thought to ask, because this is Taco Bell we’re talking about. They don’t make wings. They make weird Frankensteinian stoner “Mexican” food.

And yet, we have to admit the idea is intriguing. If the company created wings that are actually good, we might be dealing with a game-changer. A new era of Taco Bell. If they’re bad… well, at least we get to roast them. Isn’t that prospect alone enough to warrant a review?

As if suddenly selling wings wasn’t weird enough, Taco Bell has also made the strange decision to only make them available for a single week and completely unavailable before 2 pm. Making these wings, dare I say — rare. But before you jump in your car and hit up every local Taco Bell in your area in search of them we need to answer the big question: are they actually worth your time? Let’s find out.

Crispy Chicken Wings

Taco Bell Review
Dane Rivera

Price: $5.99 (order of five)

The Wings:

Taco Bell’s Crispy Chicken Wings are priced at $5.99 for an order of five. That puts the cost of each wing at a little over $1, which feels like a fair price (a bit overpriced, but we’re going through a “wing shortage…”) when compared to other wing-selling establishments. But ultimately what matters is how they taste… I’m torn on this one.

Let me say this outright: these wings are not worth a trip to Taco Bell if you have no other reason to go to Taco Bell. They aren’t going to smack your tastebuds with a flavor so good that this is going to be your go-to wing spot. They aren’t required eating while watching football or doing whatever it is that people like to do while eating wings. On their best day, these wings don’t compare with what you’d find at a Wingstop or Buffalo Wild Wingstop.

But also, I like them. Each order of wings comes with Taco Bell’s Spicy Ranch, which is an attempt to cater to the people who come to Taco Bell expecting Buffalo Wings and end up disappointed to find that these are dry rub wings. In truth though, you don’t need the dipping sauce for these to taste good.

The wings are seasoned with Taco Bell’s “Queso Seasoning” which consists of chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, black pepper, and the smallest hint of cayenne pepper. It tastes great, very similar to Taco Bell’s Nacho Fry seasoning. In fact, I’d hazard a guess that it’s the exact same mix. The spicy ranch adds some sweetness and tang to the flavor, but take the word “spicy” with a grain of salt here, it’s by no means even mild in the heat department.

Taco Bell Review
Dane Rivera

Going the dry rub route seems like a missed opportunity to toss these wings in Taco Bell’s hot red or green sauce, but maybe that’s a menu hack waiting to happen. The seasoning is doled out subtly on each wing and adheres perfectly to the wing’s light batter. My biggest gripe is how greasy these things are. Wings are generally a messy food, but I’d take buffalo sauce-stained fingers over this wet greasy mess any day. After just two wings my fingers were glistening with grease.

My napkin was practically translucent by the end of my meal.

The other big problem I have with them is that they taste a little underdone to me. If you like a crispy chicken wing, this isn’t that. Underneath the skin, the chicken fat is still soft and chewy. It’s a more noticeable problem on the drums, which tend to have more fat in the first place. Fried fat is great, don’t get me wrong, but Taco Bell’s wings would be greatly enhanced with a minute or two more in the fryer. If I could order just the flats, I would, but I imagine a big brand like Taco Bell is meticulous in how many flats and drums you get per order.

While I know enough to know that these aren’t amazing, I found these wings to be strangely addictive. I tore through my five-piece order but then was left feeling strangely unsatisfied. It was almost like I couldn’t stop my rabid eating because I was trying so hard to taste the flavor that never fully showed up. A train that shows on the horizon but never arrives at the station.

Taco Bell Review
Dane Rivera

The Bottom Line:

Drums: 2 stars. Flats: 3 stars.

Don’t go to Taco Bell for wings, but if you find yourself in the Taco Bell drive-thru by pure coincidence this weekend, give them a try — they’re surprisingly tasty despite being from Taco Bell and having a few obvious flaws. Ultimately, Taco Bell’s Crispy Chicken Wings seem like a menu item for the person at Taco Bell who doesn’t really want Taco Bell. That, unfortunately, means this item doesn’t have a natural menu pairing to help enhance the experience of eating them. Taco Bell’s fries seem like an obvious contender, but they keep removing fries from the menu.

If you’re ordering online and you’re getting the dreaded “an item in your cart is not available at this location” put your shoes on and walk inside your nearest Taco Bell, I guarantee you they are there. For whatever reason, Taco Bell’s app is leading a lot of people towards thinking these are hard to find, but talking to a few Taco Bell employees has revealed to me that these aren’t nearly as popular as the internet would have you believe.

Turns Out Those Guys At Your ‘Spider-Man’ Screening Who Looked Like Andrew Garfield And Tobey Maguire Might Have Actually Been Andrew Garfield And Tobey Maguire

WARNING: Spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home below. Very badly kept spoilers that pretty much everyone knows by now, but spoilers nonetheless. Good talk.

Now that Spider-Man: No Way Home has been out for almost an entire month and is a massive box-office success even by pre-pandemic standards, Andrew Garfield is finally opening up about his role in the film after spending nearly a year denying that he’s in it. As fans pretty much deduced after villains like Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin and Jamie Foxx’s Electro started appearing in the trailers, Garfield and Tobey Maguire‘s versions of Spider-Man arrived halfway through No Way Home thanks to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and Doctor Strange tinkering with a multiverse-shattering spell.

With that cat fully out of the bag, Garfield has been sitting down for interviews about the wild experience of seeing all the Spidey love he’s getting after his Amazing Spider-Man films failed to perform like Sony expected, which resulted in him being booted from the franchise. Despite that experience, which Garfield has openly described as “heartbreaking,” the actor couldn’t be more thrilled about working on No Way Home and being the “middle brother” to Maguire’s and Holland’s Spider-Man.

While sitting down with Entertainment Tonight, Garfield also revealed that he got so close with Maguire that the two of them snuck into screenings of No Way Home together to watch the audience’s reactions:

“I still can’t believe it happened,” Garfield gushed. “I snuck into a theater on opening night and just watched with my baseball cap on and my mask. In fact, I was also with Tobey, me and Tobey snuck into a theater together and no one knew we were there. It was just a really beautiful thing to share together.”

After getting back in the tights and completely winning over audiences with his No Way Home performance, the big question is if Garfield would come back again as Spidey. His answer? Maybe!

“I’m very, very open, but it would have to be very, very special,” Garfield said. “It would have to be very, very meaningful and fun, and joyful, like doing No Way Home was.”

Do Video Games Need To Be So Long?

When did it stop being okay for a video game to be less than 10 hours long? We know it happened at some point, but the exact moment isn’t entirely clear. As video games have become more expensive to make, filled with more content, and increased in price, we’ve seen this lead to games becoming longer and longer. Fans want the most bang for their buck, and spending $60 to $70 on a game that isn’t at least 20 hours long might feel like a rip-off.

Of course, games are usually going well beyond 20 hours — they typically push into the 30, 40, 50, and even 60-hour range, requiring a significant amount of our personal time to complete. It makes sense for folks who have the time to sink that into a game, but for those with a job, a family, or just any other sort of major responsibility, there isn’t as much time in the day and that 60-hour game becomes a mission more than a pleasure. For the kind of person who only picks up a few new games a year, it’s a reasonable lift, but if you’re the sort of person who likes to play as many games as possible, it takes up time they could be spending on other games.

This is not to say that long games are bad. Some of the best games ever made require the player to sink their entire lives into them and every hour is worth that experience, but as developers feel the pressure to make games full of content, it is leading to an industry where every game being made is requiring us to sell our lives to what we buy. This is also leading to intense backlash when a game doesn’t meet lofty expectations. Sometimes, a game just needs to be as long as it should be, and we need to appreciate shorter games more.

Fortunately, we’re starting to see more opportunities for developers to make games that aren’t quite so large in scope. For starters, we’re seeing a push from fans who are happy to play shorter games with worse graphics if it will mean that dev teams are forced to crunch less. The human element of how difficult it is to make a game and what it can do to developers in a thankless industry has led to fans questioning if getting cutting edge games at all times is really worth it.

On the other end, we’re also seeing an opportunity for players to play shorter games with a lower cost of entry. Services like Game Pass, which costs $14.99 a month, are letting players experience games for a price tag that is far less expensive than dropping $60 on a new game every month or two. This means that when a game comes out that can be completed in only a few hours, it’s not seen as a negative. Instead, it can be quickly enjoyed and the player can choose to move on to a new experience.

We’ve even seen a few games take advantage of this to tell small intimate experiences. Consider the emotional impact Journey or Abzu had — those games didn’t need to be lengthy experiences. They can be beaten in one sitting and in some ways are enhanced by that. There’s a certain joy in sitting down for an evening and beating a game. It’s similar to spending the night watching a movie or maybe binging an entire TV show. Shorter games have a place.

Right now, one of the best short games out there is Unpacking, a delightful little game where the player is tasked with unpacking boxes and decorating a variety of rooms and homes. The game takes a little about 3-4 hours to beat and is about discovering these little details of the person for whom you’re unpacking. It didn’t need to be a 10-hour adventure. It only needed to be as long as it was and it was better for it. Perhaps the best thing about it is how it reminds games that a game doesn’t need to take their life away. All that matters is that it’s done well, no matter how long it takes.
