Ed Helms And Randall Park On ‘True Story’ And The Art Of Storytelling

“Funny, poignant, and heartbreaking” is how producer and co-host Ed Helms (The Office) describes his and Randall Park’s (WandaVision) new 6-episode Peacock series, True Story (which you can stream now). The show is structured a little like Comedy Central’s Drunk History with the use of star-filled reenactments to flesh out these stories. But the real charm comes from its blend of silliness and sincerity and seemingly mild-mannered storytellers, who roll out details from their adventures that are bound to shock and get a genuine response from Helms and Park, who have been given no prep for what they’re taking part in.

We spoke with the hosts/actors about their show, why they wanted to center it on true stories from real people, getting their friends to come play, and what makes a good storyteller.

I feel like I want to hear from people less and less, and you’re signing up for something where you want to hear more from people. What is it about just real storytellers, real people, telling you these stories that made you want to pursue this?

Ed Helms: So what I think is so cool about this format is it’s about human connection. We’re used to coming from a background where great writers sit down and they think about stories and they get stories really dialed in and really perfect. This is just more human and messy. And we just sit down and we hear people expressing these really unbelievable stories from their lives in the most honest and direct way. And I just love how human and direct it is. And tangible. And then, of course, by sharing and trusting us with these stories, they’re really allowing us to laugh with them at their own folly. Nobody laughs at themselves anymore in our culture. We’re all taking ourselves so seriously. This is just the warmest show I’ve had the privilege to be a part of.

Randall Park: Yeah. And there’s a real, real vulnerability in these storytellers. We don’t know [what’s coming]. We had had no idea who they were until we sat across from them and just them being so open about yeah, these trying times… this story of real sadness or longing or embarrassment. I don’t know, it really bonded us with them for that short period of time.

In terms of the other half of this, which is the recreations, you guys obviously bring in a lot of great guest talent. What’s your function there?

Helms: Basically, after each interview, we’d have a little brainstorm about “who do we know?” What friends of ours can we rope into this? What actor would be really fun in this part? And we had some great writers that really beefed up the reenactments, added a lot of jokes and visual comedy and all of that. It just was a really collaborative effort throughout the whole thing, and incredibly fun to make.

Park: Yeah, from beginning to end.

Who inspired a love of storytelling in you? Somebody who was a great storyteller when you were growing up or somebody in your career that you’ve encountered?

Helms: I’m trying to think. I have a buddy, Ross, who just has a story for every occasion and you can’t believe… Part of it, I think, is a talent for recall because once you start hearing a story, you’re like, oh yeah, I’ve got that. I got a story like that or whatever. But some people just have that gift. Of recalling stories and having the ability to inject them at the perfect moment of a conversation. And he is always just so easy to hang out with because he’s always got that.

What’s the key to a good story? Is it just that recall ability? Is it just being able to tell a story that’s surprising or is it somebody who’s acting out characters and really painting a full picture?

Park: Yeah. I think that’s a part of it. Really, really allowing you as the listener to visualize it. I feel like every great story feels a little cinematic. You know? And I feel like the ability to convey that scene to the listener is really key.

Helms: I also think the intention behind a story matters. A whole lot. If somebody’s trying to impress you or come off cool or whatever then the story just doesn’t really feel that fun. But if they’re really just being vulnerable and being honest and just sharing some embarrassing moment or something deeply moving, and they’re just trying to connect with you or be vulnerable with you… I think that’s really what this show has done beautifully. I think those kinds of stories are just inherently great.

Park: Yeah. I think the word sharing is key, you know? Just this real desire to share something of yourself with somebody… I think just to have that feeling of passing along this kind of sacred thing to another makes for a really good story.

Even if somebody is trying to look… Rick Steigerwald [who appears in the first episode] sounds like somebody at the end of a bar just sounding cool. But his story is so cool. So you can’t deny that.

Helms: It’s so genuine. It’s such an expression of who he is. Right? It’s such an honest expression of himself. I felt like he was hugging us in a way. Just welcoming us into his little dome of insanity. Yeah. God, he’s so funny.

And he’s this legendary boxer in West Pittsburgh and all this stuff. Lived an amazing life.

Helms: Well, here’s, what’s crazy. So Randall and I sit down and we do these interviews and we hear these stories. They’re heavily cut down just for time. Just to get an episode together. But Rick, my God, that story. There’s so much we had to cut out of that story. All the stuff that you’re talking about, his background, his childhood with his brothers, it was… he is quite a character.

Park: And the tangents. And the tangents were stories in and of themselves.

Helms: Sometimes, at a certain point, the producers are like, “He hasn’t gotten to the story yet.” We’re like, “Okay.” Because we’re having a blast.

Adam McKay Will Pivot From One Light Subject (Climate Change) To Another (Insurrection) For His Next Movie

After receiving mixed reviews for his latest film, Don’t Look Up, which satirized America’s lackadaisacal response to climate change through the satirical lens of pending asteroid strike, Adam McKay is tackling another controversial topic: The January 6 insurrection. This time around, McKay will be acting as a producer while The Comey Rule director Billy Ray takes the helm for J6, which Ray originally envisioned as a miniseries after traveling to Washington D.C. to interview witnesses and participants of the MAGA riot including members of the Capitol Police.

Via Deadline:

Ray had originally expected to long look at the events of January 6 in the form of another limited series. Deeply affected by the attack, he traveled to Washington, D.C. within days of the siege, and interviewed a number of the key principals when memories were raw and fresh. That included Capitol police officers Michael Fanone and Harry Dunn, as well as members of Congress who were trapped inside the Capitol when the violent siege unfolded. Fanone consulted on the screenplay throughout the process.

According to Deadline, McKay was given the script while in the middle of preparing Don’t Look Up‘s release on Netflix. But despite his busy schedule, he was so “moved by the material and Ray’s passion” that he immediately came aboard as a producer.

“Billy has written a screenplay that is not only harrowing and terrifying but is sure to become the definitive cinematic document on that gut wrenching day,” McKay said.

Daryl Morey Stresses The Sixers Will Try To Trade Ben Simmons Before The Deadline, But Admits It’s ‘Less Likely Than Likely’

It’s official: Ben Simmons is still on the Philadelphia 76ers. Ok, that’s been the case for several years now, but over the last few months, Simmons has made clear that he’d like to move on from the franchise that drafted him No. 1 overall out of LSU. The Sixers, meanwhile, have straddled a line where the team is both willing to move him if their reportedly high price is met while simultaneously hoping that he’ll return to the team and play at some point.

We got an update on where all of this stands on Thursday afternoon thanks to a cameo Daryl Morey made on Philadelphia sports talk radio. Among the most prominent updates was that Morey claimed the price has been lowered a bit due to the way Joel Embiid has performed this season.

One potential landing spot that has popped up more and more prominently in recent days is the Sacramento Kings, with Morey stressing that he believes that there’s a way to make a deal work there.

But ultimately, Morey said, while the team is going to work to facilitate a trade, he believes it’s more likely that Simmons is on the roster after next month’s trade deadline, and that if he had his way, he’ll return to the team.

The trade deadline is on Feb. 10. The Simmons-less Sixers sit 26-18 on the year, putting them in fifth place in the Eastern Conference and 2.5 games back of the 1-seed.

‘White Lotus’ Season 2 Will Reportedly Take Place In Italy

After its highly successful first season, White Lotus is set to return for a second season, this time set in Sicily. The first season of the comedy-drama, which aired last summer, took place at the fictional White Lotus hotel in Maui. The upcoming season will take place in Italy, filming at the Four Seasons San Domenica Palace in the Sicilian resort town Taormina. The hotel will be closed this spring to allow filming to complete.

For its second season, the newest batch of characters will include The Sopranos’ alum Michael Imperioli, Aubrey Plaza, F. Murray Abraham, Tom Hollander, Adam DiMarco, and Haley Lu Richardsonin. The iconic Jennifer Coolidge will return to the series as well.

Imperioli is set to play Dominic Di Grasso, who travels to the Sicilian White Lotus resort with his father Bert Di Grasso (Abraham) and son (DiMarco). Plaza will portray Harper Spiller, who is on vacation with her husband, Hollander will play Quientin, a man vacationing with his nephew, and Richardson will play a young woman names Portia on a trip with her boss.

The show, which was originally supposed to be a limited series, was met with universal acclaim. Series creator Mike White decided to make the show an anthology series, bringing in a new slew of quirky characters for the next season. No air date has been announced as of yet. What we do know is that HBO loves to bring its characters to Italy for their second seasons, as evident with The Sopranos. Perhaps viewers will get to see Coolidge eating a gabagool sandwich.

Video: Resilient reporter gets hit by a car and keeps doing her job

Former “Saturday Night Live” star Tina Fey once said that live television will “never be perfect, but perfect is overrated. Perfect is boring on live TV.”

Who knows that better than TV reporters, who are sent out to brave extreme weather events, interview members of the general public and get quotes from sweaty athletes on the sidelines.

TV reporters are trained to handle just about anything that comes their way, but I’m sure none of them have ever been trained to stay on the air after being blindsided by a car.

Tori Yorgey of NBC affiliate WSAZ was reporting about a water main break on the side of the road in Dunbar, West Virginia when she was struck by a car on live television. “Oh, my God! I just got hit by a car, but I’m OK,” Yorgey told anchor Tim Irr.

Yorgey was knocked out of frame for a while but she regained composure and bragged that it wasn’t the first time it’s happened. “I actually got hit by a car in college just like that,” she explained.

What makes Yorgey even more resilient is that she was all alone when it happened. She set up her own camera and had to put the shot back in order after the car plowed through.

Some people who saw the video thought that Irr’s reaction to his coworker being struck by a car was a little cold. But he later cleared things up by saying he wasn’t able to see her get hit by the car.

After finishing her report, Yorgey went to the hospital to be checked out and she’s said to be doing fine.

Liam Gallagher Insists Oasis ‘Ain’t Reforming’ But Offers A Tiny Glimmer Of Hope Nonetheless

In 2020, Liam Gallagher gave Oasis fans hope that the legendary band would finally be reuniting by telling Noel Gallagher that 2021 would be “our year.” He’s singing a very different tune in 2022, though, and it’s definitely not an Oasis one.

He teased some major news yesterday, writing on Twitter, “Big announcement tmoz and I mean BIG bigger than my nose bigger than rkids rite said Fred f*cking massive so stay tuned LG x.” Some fans in the replies thought maybe this announcement would have to do with an Oasis reunion. Then, he reiterated today that he has big news coming, tweeting, “Evening Rastas more big news tmoz bigger than my mouth and that’s BIG I hear ya say any way sleep tight and c’mon the arsenal LG x.”

He quickly added to the tweet by answering the Oasis questions while not necessarily closing the door on the idea of a reunion, tweeting, “And just a heads up oasis ain’t reforming not this [week] anyway LG x.”

While Oasis hasn’t been active for some time now, there would certainly be some interest in a reunion: Both Gallagher brothers have enjoyed successful solo careers since the band came to an end, and Oasis’ music continues to resonate as “Wonderwall” was the first ’90s song to eclipse a billion Spotify streams.

John Oliver Is Back To Make Sense Of A Nonsensical World In The ‘Last Week Tonight’ Season 9 Trailer

Last Week Tonight season eight wrapped up in November 2021, and lucky for host John Oliver, nothing of importance has happened since then.

Just kidding, plenty of important news stories have occurred in the past few months, including James Cameron confirming that Avatar 2 will be released on December 16 and, uh, some other stuff that I’m sure Oliver will cover during season nine.

HBO has released a trailer for the new season of Last Week Tonight, which is heavy on clips from last season. That’s understandable; not every item the Emmy-winning show covers is as evergreen as The Da Vinci Code being bad. There’s also a premiere date (February 20) and a poster that shows Oliver sitting next to a scorched globe with his hands over his face. The tagline: “Mistakes were made.” That is, as they say, a mood.

Here’s more on what to expect:

As the country navigates the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and a highly polarized political landscape, the ninth season of the critically acclaimed series promises to shine a light on headline news as well as lesser-reported topics that both inform and entertain, featuring a mix of the series’ sharp commentary, pre-taped pieces and occasional special guests.

Here’s the poster:

Gunna Approves Of His Pushin P Movement Catching On With Brands On Social Media

No one really knows what “Pushin P” means, but that hasn’t stopped the trend sparked by Gunna’s DS4EVER single (and his newfound habit of abusing the blue “P” emoji) from spreading like wildfire on Instagram and Twitter. Trend-conscious brand accounts are always on the lookout for memes to co-opt, from Drake’s Certified Lover Boy cover to the red flag emoji craze, so of course, everyone from IHOP to Nike is now “pushin P” on social media — and Gunna unsurprisingly approves, considering it all amounts to free promotion for his No. 1-selling album.

Referred to on Emojipedia as the P Button (its official Unicode title is “Negative Squared Latin Capital Letter P”), the emoji has taken over on Twitter. The International House of Pancakes tweeted, “We’re always pushing 🅿ancakes,” while Nike’s account claimed, “We had an internal meeting, and without getting into details, we’re pushin 🅿 all year.” Gunna was only too happy to big up IHOP’s tweet, declaring, “IHO🅿 Pushin🅿.” NBA teams like the Memphis Grizzlies, restaurants like WingStop, and even the freaking Teletubbies are dropping the P Button all over the timeline.

Meanwhile, over on Instagram, one-woman brand Kim Kardashian got in on the fun, captioning a bikini photo, “Beach 🅿arty.” Gunna reposted the photo to his Instagram Story, adding, “Capital 🅿!!”

The one person adopting the slang that Gunna likely wouldn’t approve of is Freddie Gibbs, the Indiana rapper with whom Gunna has been feuding over snitching accusations. Gibbs has been sarcastically jacking the slang on his Instagram burner as a way to troll Gunna for a lackluster diss record on his new album. However, Gunna probably isn’t paying it too much mind in the wake of his monster first week (and likely second) — he’s way too busy, well, pushin P.

Holly Humberstone Gets Nostalgic For Home On ‘London Is Lonely’

Come April, London’s Holly Humberstone will be gracing the festival stage at Coachella. From there, she’ll be going on tour with Olivia Rodrigo and she’s on one heck of a ride since releasing her The Walls Are Way Too Thin EP last November. Now she has just dropped her first single since the EP came out in the nostalgic “London Is Lonely.”

The song describes the feeling of being in a new home for the first time. Humberstone realizes that her new life is ahead of her while looking back to the past. It’s a sweet examination of the anxiety that arises from this feeling, especially in pandemic times. It’s an honest song that will surely be well-received on tour alongside Rodrigo’s equally emotional tunes.

Humberstone shared a statement on what the song means to her:

“I wrote ‘London Is Lonely’ back in February 2020 right before the pandemic hit here in the UK. I had just moved out of my childhood home down to London and had spent the past few months feeling really trapped and alone in my tiny flat with strangers. London felt so intense and although there were so many people around me, I felt even more isolated and like I didn’t belong. I kind of lost myself in the city. I didn’t exactly know who I was anymore, and so going home and writing felt like my safe space to process everything. It’s funny now listening to the song almost two years on, post-pandemic, and feeling like nothing much has changed at all. I’m still trying to find my place here and make it my home and so it felt right to put this song out into the world right now, when so many other people are probably feeling lost right now too.”

Michael Mann Will Release A Novel Later This Year That Will Serve As A Prequel And Sequel To ‘Heat,’ His Classic Heist Film

It’s been more than 25 years since Michael Mann’s Heat arrived in theaters and forever altered people’s lists of perennial favorite movies. In addition to being one of the greatest heist films ever committed to celluloid, the movie marked the first time that Hollywood icons Robert De Niro and Al Pacino had ever shared any real screen time (no, that dissolve shot from The Godfather: Part II doesn’t count). Now, Mann is ready to unleash a new chapter of the beloved crime drama—well, several of them—in the form of Heat 2, a new novel he wrote with award-winning scribe Meg Gardiner, which will be published this summer.

Deadline was the first outlet to break the news about the novel, which will serve as both a prequel and a sequel to the 1995 film. “It’s been my intention for a long time to do the further stories of Heat,” Mann told Deadline. “There was always a rich history or backstory about the events in these people’s lives before 1995 in Heat and projection of where their lives would take them after.”

Al Pacino in 'Heat'
Tenor

The book will mark Mann’s first novel, and the first title from Michael Mann Books, which is part of HarperCollins’ William Morrow imprint. It may or may not reveal the genesis of Pacino’s “great ass!” According to Deadline:

The novel Heat 2 starts one day after the events of the film, with a wounded Chris Shiherlis [played by Val Kilmer in Heat] desperate to escape LA. The story moves to both the six years preceding the heist and the years immediately following it, featuring new characters and new worlds of high-end professional crime, with highly cinematic action sequences. The venues range from the streets of L.A. to the inner sanctums of rival Taiwanese crime syndicates in a South American free trade zone, to a massive drug cartel money-laundering operation just over the border in Mexico, and eventually to Southeast Asia. Heat 2 explores the dangerous workings of international criminal organizations with full-blooded portraits of its male and female inhabitants.

Heat 2 will be published on August 9th. You can watch an original trailer for the tome below.
