We Tried Eminem’s Mom’s Spaghetti In Los Angeles — Here’s The Verdict

His palms are sweaty,
Knees weak; arms are heavy.

There’s vomit on his sweater already —
Mom’s spaghetti.

He’s nervous but on the surface he looks calm and ready
To drop bombs but he keeps on forgetting…

It’s one of the most gripping opening stanzas in all of hip-hop history. It’s visual, visceral, and, in just a few syncopated syllables, shows Eminem’s mastery of the natural musicality of language. It’s such an effective opening that not only does it fill you in on the plot and story of the movie 8 Mile, you can practically taste B-Rabbit’s mom’s spaghetti (both as it goes down and as it comes up). But nothing about that opening line suggests that B-Rabbit’s mom has a handle on centuries worth of Italian culinary tradition.

Begging the question: Do we even want to try this dish?

The short answer is “yes.” Last September, Em and Curt Callo and Ann Stevenson (of Union Joints Restaurant Group), launched the 8 Mile-themed Mom’s Spaghetti in Detroit and absolutely crushed it. Em himself even made an appearance at the service window. So it’s not shocking that as the legend pulls up to LA for the Super Bowl halftime show, he’s bringing his mom’s spaghetti with him for another pop-up.

This Super Bowl weekend (starting today), diners will be able to try the Mom’s Spaghetti concept via Postmates — or in-person at a pop-up — housed at Uncle Paulie’s Deli in DTLA — while supplies last. Items on the full menu include a simple plate of parmesan-dusted spaghetti, toasted garlic bread, beef and vegan meatballs, and the S’ghetti sandwich (a favorite straight out of Eminem’s real-life upbringing). Postmates will also be holding a sweepstakes that offers ten people the chance to score a limited-edition jar of Mom’s Spaghetti Sauce, signed by Em himself.

Before you throw down your money on Mom’s Spaghetti, you’re going to want to know if it’s any good — so we tried the whole menu for you! But not before asking co-owner Curt Catallo and Chef Chris Springer some questions about what to expect.

“Mom’s spaghetti” almost sounds like slander in Lose Yourself. But I’d imagine this is a classic Spag Bol or what Italians would call a Bolognese or NY Italians would call ‘Sunday Gravy?’

Catallo:

I think the reason why that line connects in such an incredible way is that everyone knows that spaghetti reference… it could be Rabbit’s mom or anyone else’s… we’ve all had it. And I don’t think it’s slander, we’ve all been nervous before going into battle!

Springer:

The standard sauce is straight — like a jar sauce but totally scratch. We have the bolognese in Detroit, because Em’ asked for one.

What was your experience with that type of sauce and how did you develop this recipe?

Catallo: We started making the sauce in ‘17 for the Revival Pop-Up at the Shelter (in Saint Andrews) and took it to Coachella.

Springer: We worked with Paul Rosenberg and their crew to dial it in along the way. We had a big tasting and perfected it right when the pandemic hit, literally eating Mom’s when they canceled March Madness, and locked the recipe.

What hallmarks do you want the sauce to have? Is there a ‘Detroit style’ to this type of sauce or is it pretty much NY style? Or even true Italian?

Catallo: What we were going after for Paul and Marshall was a sauce that was totally straightforward and legit. It’s not my grandma’s sauce because it’s not supposed to be. Mom’s is a classic, straight red sauce.

Eminem’s raps always seemed to paint the sort of world where people would overcook pasta — do you keep things al dente?

Springer: When we make Mom’s we want it to taste like it’s an incredible leftover when you get it. We cook all the spaghetti ahead of time and reheat it in a wok with sauce to order. It gives it a snap.

Spaghetti w/ Balls/Vegan Balls

As Catallo alluded to, the Mom’s Spaghetti concept is less about offering a gourmet experience and more about capturing the flavor of delicious leftovers. Like when you pour through the door after a late night, half-buzzed and half-asleep from your midnight adventures, crack open the fridge, and dive into carb-loaded comfort food. I’m happy to say that it completely captures that magic. From the take-out style packaging to the reheated wok noodles, this stuff tastes good and is as much a people-pleaser as “Lose Yourself.”

The appropriately juvenilely named Spaghetti with Balls is Mom’s Spaghetti’s main menu item. It can be ordered solo, or with beef or vegan meatballs. The spaghetti itself does have that snap to it that Springer mentioned, looking at the dish I was fully expecting soggy noodles that would turn to mush in my mouth, but I was surprised to find a pleasing firm-but-chewy texture to them.

The sauce was another surprise, it smells incredibly pungent — the garlic fills your immediate surroundings and that’s not a pure compliment! But the sauce does its job, it keeps the noodles interesting, and adds a lot of brightness and some complex savory umami qualities. It’s delicious, not life-changing but altogether makes for a dish worth ordering — especially with the garlic toast that it’s served alongside.

The meatballs, both beef, and vegan are a lot more forgettable. I’m not sure if this was a result of losing some flavor in transit, but both the beef and vegan balls were a bit on the dry side. Not to the point of being inedible, but entirely skippable. The beef meatball was the juicier of the two, and featured a nice savory balance of salt, garlic, and peppery flavor.

The vegan balls also had a good flavor, if a bit drier. They were much more noticeably plant-y and featured a spicier onion-forward flavor. If you need the protein to complete the meal, go for whichever ball sounds better for you, but I think you’re better off just ordering the spaghetti on its own.

Or, better yet, opt for this next option…

S’getti Sandwich

Eminem Food Review

When I first saw the S’getti sandwich I thought it was kind of dumb (carbs on carbs!). Then I realized that when I’m eating spaghetti leftovers, I’m usually utilizing the garlic bread in exactly this way. This sandwich isn’t the dumb one, it’s me!

Putting spaghetti on top of your garlic toast is a delicious experience, and Mom’s Spaghetti just builds it for us. This is the essential order from the pop-up. It combines the best of what the restaurant concept offers — the buttery garlic french toast, which is crunchy but soft on the inside, and the snappy bright noodles — and further elevates both with a slice of delicately salty melted mozzarella. It’s last night’s pasta plus a grilled cheese sandwich. Delicious and genius!

The dish has a great mouthfeel, it’s crispy and crunchy, chewy, but not mushy, and features a savory garlic flavor that settles on the palate nicely. B-Rabbit never rapped about his mom’s S’getti sandwich, but he damn sure should have!

The Bottom Line:

Order the S’getti sandwich. It doesn’t conjure up nostalgia for 8-Mile but it’s legitimately delicious and deserves a spot alongside your other Super Bowl food favorites this weekend. Also, for true stans of Em, it’s a dish he actually ate when he was a young kid, more like B-Rabbit than the modern Eminem we know today. And that’s pretty cool.

Jon Stewart Has Kind Of, For Some Reason, Once Again Come To Joe Rogan’s Defense

After stirring up controversy last week by defending Joe Rogan from calls to censor or cancel the podcaster from Spotify, comedian Jon Stewart has once again dipped back into the situation, which he now jokingly calls “Rogan-gate.” On the latest episode of The Problem with Jon Stewart podcast, the former Daily Show host did admit to being too quick to “grant more understanding and nuance” to Rogan because he personally knows the guy. While interviewing experts, Stewart conceded that there are valid criticisms to be made about the misinformation Rogan spreads on his show. However, things took a turn.

The root of Stewart’s issue is that he’s concerned with “who gets to decide” who has a platform, and that goes beyond just the controversy over Rogan. But to emphasize his point, Stewart brought him his anti-Iraq War stance from the 2000s, which he says was also deemed “misinformation” at the time and could’ve led to Viacom pulling him off the air. Uh, Jon, where are you going with this? Via Mediaite:

“I mean, in the Iraq War, I was on the side of what you would think, on the mainstream, is misinformation. I was promoting what they would call misinformation but it turned out to be right years later,” he continued. “And the establishment media was wrong, and not only were they wrong in some respects, you could make the case that they enabled a war that killed hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people and never paid a price for it and never had accountability.”

We could be very wrong here. We could. Or maybe he just phrased his point weirdly. But… is Jon Stewart positing that Rogan’s “misinformation” about COVID could also one day be proven right, and therefore, he should be allowed to continue to spread it just in case? Is that what happened here?

Hmm… Nope. Do not like it.

MoviePass Is Coming Back From The Dead This Summer, But Things Get Murky After That

AMC has AMC Stubs A-List. Regal offers Regal Unlimited. Alamo Drafthouse is (hopefully) bringing back the Alamo Season Pass. But those movie ticket subscription services would not have existed MoviePass, which launched in 2011 and exploded in popularity in 2017 when it allowed users to see a movie a day for only $10/month.

If that deal sounds too good to be true, well, that’s because it was too good to be true; MoviePass resorted to all sorts of shady sh*t to prevent subscribers from seeing movies, leading to lawsuits and financial issues before eventually filing for bankruptcy.

But during a press conference on Thursday, co-founder Stacy Spikes revealed that MoviePass is planning to re-launch this summer as MoviePass 2.0. In case you were wondering, yes, he made the announcement with a picture of a phoenix behind him.

Spikes [said] that MoviePass is being reimagined as a cooperative. It will also use virtual currency and tiered pricing plans. But there were still many questions that were left unanswered. Namely, Spikes did not give pricing information for the various plans that MoviePass will begin offering in just a few short months.

There was also talk of product placement and digital ads:

When it returns (although maybe that should be an “if”), MoviePass should rent out theaters for screenings of Mission: Impossible — Fallout as an apology.

For much more on MoviePass, check out the Blackout Dates podcast.

Shawn Mendes Lands A Major Film Role As The Lead In ‘Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile’

While Shawn Mendes is a pop star first and foremost, he has acted here and there, and now he has another credit to add to his IMDb page: Deadline reports that Mendes has been tapped to star as the titular character in Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, an animated film adaptation of Bernard Waber’s 1965 children’s book, which itself is a sequel to 1962’s The House On East 88th Street. Mendes’ castmates include Javier Bardem, Constance Wu, and Winslow Fegley.

This is Mendes’ first starring film role, as his acting credits before this are sparse. He voiced Young Jake in the 2013 English dub of Underdogs (originally titled Metegol) and he appeared on an episode of The 100 in 2016.

A publisher’s statement on the book reads, “Lyle the crocodile lives in a house on East 88th Street in New York City. Lyle enjoys helping the Primm family with everyday chores, and playing with the neighborhood kids. He’s the happiest crocodile any home ever had… until one neighbor insists that Lyle belongs in a zoo! Mr. Grumps and his cat, Loretta, don’t like crocodiles, and everything Lyle does to win them over seems to go wrong. It will take all of Lyle’s charm — and courage — to reveal the hero, and friend, behind the big, crocodile smile.”

‘The Batman’ Star Robert Pattinson, Like You, Is A Little Terrified Of Willem Dafoe

With The Batman hitting theaters in less than a month, Robert Pattinson is in full promotional mode. The actor recently sat down for a new video interview with GQ where he looked back at his eclectic roles since making it big as a teen heartthrob in the Twilight films. While talking about his performance in 2019’s The Lighthouse, Pattinson opened up about what it was like working with Willem Dafoe, who is apparently filled with a frightening level of energy that never goes away.

According to Pattinson, the Spider-Man actor was like the Energizer bunny during rehearsal for the claustrophobic film that saw the two men’s characters lose their minds while manning a lighthouse. Via IndieWire:

Pattinson joked, “It’s almost like working with a 6-year-old. There’s nothing that fatigues them.”

“The Batman” star admitted that he was “kind of a little bit terrified” by Dafoe’s admirable work ethic. “We’d rehearse the entire movie, and then the second we got to the end, he’s like, ‘Again!’ and just start doing it again and his energy hadn’t even been dented,” Pattinson said.

Despite Dafoe’s bottomless energy, Pattinson loved working with the actor. Although, he might want to be careful. Recently, Dafoe has been angling to play a “Joker imposter” alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s version of the Batman villain. Granted, Pattinson’s Batman is in an entirely different film universe, but someone at Warner Bros. could get the bright idea to pair the two actors up again. If that happens, maybe stock up on the energy drinks.

The Batman hits theaters on March 4.

Kendrick Perkins And Richard Jefferson Laughed Very Hard About The Lakers Not Making Any Trades And Focusing On The Buyout Market

Despite plenty of rumors circulating about their desire to do something at the NBA trade deadline, the Los Angeles Lakers were unable to find anyone or anything that they could add to their roster. Once 3 p.m. EST hit on Thursday afternoon and the Lakers had the exact same roster that they had when everyone woke up that morning, it became obvious that there’s only one path forward for the team: the buyout market.

Of course, banking on the buyout market is not only the best idea. Teams need to, you know, buy guys out, and there’s no guarantee those players who become available do anything of note. This, we presume, is why Richard Jefferson and Kendrick Perkins of ESPN busted out laughing when they were informed by Malika Andrews that Adrian Wojnarowski reported L.A. is turning its focus to picking up guys on the buyout market.

A very, very, very good rule of thumb is to never be in such a position as an organization that your best bet to improve yourself makes people laugh. As of today, the Lakers sit in ninth place in the Western Conference at 26-30, and will head into the second half of the season with Russell Westbrook, Talen Horton-Tucker, and Kendrick Nunn — the three players whose names popped up the most in trade rumors — still on the roster.

Sting Sells His Entire Solo And The Police Catalog To Universal For Close To $300 Million

Sting is joining Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, and Neil Young in selling his entire catalog of music for hundreds of millions of dollars. Bought by Universal Music Group (UMG), the catalog includes all of his solo recordings, but more importantly, also includes songwriting catalog of The Police, including hits like “Roxanne” and “Every Breath You Take.”

First reported by the New York Times, the deal is estimated to be worth around $300 million, although exact financial terms weren’t disclosed yet. In comparison, Bowie and Springsteen’s masters and publishing rights netted $500 million, while Bob Dylan’s publishing rights were bought by UMG for $300 million.

“It is absolutely essential to me that my career’s body of work have a home where it is valued and respected,” Sting said in a statement. “Not only to connect with longtime fans in new ways but also to introduce my songs to new audiences, musicians and generations.”

The “Fields Of Gold” singer’s new agreement with UMG (who already own his recorded rights) now includes both songwriting royalties and copyrights for his full catalog of songs. That means all of the royalties that Sting was collecting from the iconic Notorious B.I.G. tribute track “I’ll Be Missing You,” by Diddy, Faith Evans, and 112 (which samples “Every Breath You Take”), will now be paid directly to UMG.

Sting put out his latest solo album, Bridge, last November. In 2018, Sting and Shaggy released the collaborative album, 44/876, which took home a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.

Megan Thee Stallion Announces The Premiere Date For Her Animal-Centric Snapchat Show, ‘Off Thee Leash’

Last May, it was reported that Megan Thee Stallion had teamed up with Snapchat for a new pet-centric show, Off Thee Leash With Megan Thee Stallion, and now, with the help of a massive billboard and her ever-popular Instagram, Meg’s revealed the show’s premiere date: February 19.

According to Snapchat’s description, Megan will be “joined by celebrity friends and their pets hosted in a way that only Megan can.” The new billboard offers some more hints; not only will Meg’s super-popular French bulldog 4oe (pronounced “foe”) make an appearance (of course), but apparently, there will also be a broader range of pets, including a llama (although to whom llama belongs remains a mystery).

The show will be just one of Meg’s future forays into TV and film, as she also signed a first-look production deal with Netflix in December. The deal reportedly includes the potential for both shows and movies, like the horror film she’s been writing or the anime she’s fond of, so fans can look forward to the fruits of that development.

In the meantime, the Houston Hottie has been showing off her acting chops in the rollout for her Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Super Bowl ad, which we’ll finally see in entirety on Sunday. It also includes a tie-in with her latest song, “Flamin’ Hottie,” an ode to her favorite snack.

ESPN’s Tim Legler Absolutely Buried Kristaps Porzingis After The Mavs Traded Him

One of the most surprising trades of a wild deadline day in the NBA saw the Dallas Mavericks ship Kristaps Porzingis off to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans.

It was a future-facing move for a Wizards team that had found itself capped out with bloated contracts that weren’t working out so far this season, and while Porzingis is heavily paid, they only have two more years of his deal after this one (including a player option in 2023-24). It provides them with some flexibility while hoping Porzingis can stay healthy (a huge if) and will be happier in a new situation after some tension with Luka Doncic in Dallas in the past.

For Dallas, it’s a bet on their being able to get the best out of Dinwiddie and Bertans alongside Doncic, as those two have struggled to live up to their hefty deals in Washington. As such, there weren’t an awful lot of people who loved the deal for either side from a basketball standpoint, with most pointing to Washington doing a good job undoing its own cap mess. However, ESPN’s Tim Legler is the loudest one stumping for the Mavs having won this deal, as he absolutely lit up Porzingis on the network’s NBA Today deadline special in a rant that had Richard Jefferson and Kendrick Perkins cackling with laughter.

“I love this deal absolutely for the Mavericks, no question about it, because if you look at a guy like Kristaps Porzingis, I know he got nicknamed the Unicorn because he’s so unique, but he’s also the Unicorn because you hardly ever see him. That’s the problem with Kristaps Porzingis, he’s not a guy that’s consistently available. And then the biggest problem is, when Luka Doncic is off the floor, if this is your second best player he can’t initiate any offense for himself. He’s not a guy you can run an offense through for five or six minutes while Luka’s over there getting some Gatorade.”

He goes on to talk about why he likes getting Dinwiddie in there who can create his own shot and give Doncic a breather some, which is certainly what Dallas is hoping for in this trade — although, they’ll need a better version of Dinwiddie than what he’s been in Washington so far. It’s an incredible segment from a guy who is known for great analysis rather than letting the takes fly, but Legs let the spice out on this one and we’re appreciative of it because it was incredibly entertaining.

The Celtics Continued Their Busy Day By Turning Dennis Schröder, Enes Freedom, And Bruno Fernando Into Daniel Theis

The Boston Celtics did some reshaping of their roster on Thursday afternoon before the NBA trade deadline. First, the team called up the San Antonio Spurs and turned Josh Richardson into Derrick White, giving the team the sort of backcourt option and creator that they could really use alongside Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, and Jayson Tatum.

Right before we officially hit 3 p.m. EST, the Celtics managed to get one more deal sorted out. According to multiple reports, Boston and the Houston Rockets came to terms on a deal that will lead to a reunion between the Celtics and veteran center Daniel Theis. The Rockets, meanwhile, will bring Dennis Schröder on board, along with Enes Freedom (hold this thought for a moment) and Bruno Fernando.

Alright, you can stop holding that thought now: Wojnarowski reports that Freedom won’t play for the Rockets, as the team will waive him.

We’ll have to wait and see if Freedom is the only player who gets bought out here — Schröder and Fernando are both only under contract for the remainder of this season. Theis, meanwhile, spent the last 3.5 years of his NBA career on the Celtics, and should give them some reinforcements in their frontcourt. So far this season, he’s averaged 8.4 points and five rebounds in 22.5 minutes per game for Houston.
