Samuel L. Jackson Wants A Mace Windu Redemption Arc: ‘I’m Ready’

Nowadays, just because your role in a franchise ended over a decade ago, it does not mean that your story won’t be resurrected. See Obi-Wan, Boba Fett, even Anakin himself. So, naturally, many Star Wars fans are asking about more characters (who may or may not be dead) including Mace Windu, played by Samuel L. Jackson.

While on the podcast Happy Sad Confused, Jackson confirmed that he didn’t think Mace Windu really died when he was thrown out that window by Sidious. He probably just lost an arm! It happens! Jackson jokes that Windu is out and about with one arm in the galaxy, saying “He’s alive somewhere.” The actor added “There’s a huge history of people with one hand returning in ‘Star Wars,’” referring to the multiple Skywalker boys who have lost their appendages.

Jackson added that he asked Mandalorian and Boba Fett director, Bryce Dallas Howard, to get him in one of the many Star Wars spinoff series. “I asked — the only person I’ve ever said that to, about coming back, was Bryce Dallas Howard, ’cause I just did a movie with her,’ Jackson says, probably talking about their upcoming thriller Argylle. “She directs episodes of ‘The Mandalorian. I said, ‘So you think you might be able to hook a brother up? I mean, you like me, right?’ She’s like, ‘I love you, you’re amazing!’ ‘So put me back in! Put me in coach, I’m ready! I’ll learn to lightsaber left-handed. Come on.”

Jackson reprised his role through a voice-over in 2019’s The Rise Of Skywalker, but you probably don’t remember, because not many people saw it more than once, and it wasn’t very good. It’s time to give Windu his redemption arc! Assuming he really is alive.

Coldplay Drops Off An Anime-Inspired Video For The Rocking ‘People Of The Pride’

Coldplay is exactly six months removed from the release of their 2021 album Music Of The Spheres and they’re not done with it yet, as they dropped a video for “People Of The Pride” today. The clip features a mixture of anime-inspired animations and black-and-white live footage from a Coldplay concert. As for the song itself, as about as aggressive of a guitar-driven rock tune as the band has ever released.

The band’s Guy Berryman previously told Apple Music of the song, “We started the song probably over ten years ago and couldn’t really finish it. Again, this was one which Max [Martin] really helped shape sonically. The way we had it before, it sounded a little bit old-fashioned, almost like glam rock. What Max managed to do was take the energy and layer in a way which preserved that feel but also made it sound very modern at the same time.”

When it comes to new videos, Coldplay fans better enjoy them while they last, as Chris Martin reckons the band will be done with making music in about 2025.

Lauren Boebert Mistakenly Made Up An Army Rank While Attempting To Justify Heckling Biden’s SOTU Address

Rootin’ tootin’ Lauren Boebert is at it again. This time around, she’s not dabbling in international relations (and showing how very little she knows about Russia), but she’s attempting to explain why she interrupted Biden’s State Of The Union address while heckling him. In doing so. she (and Marjorie Taylor Greene) made spectacles of themselves while he was talking about his son’s death. All of this happened after Boebert showed up in a “Drill Baby Drill”-emblazoned wrap, which Ted Cruz loved, and she later tried to defend her heckling to little positive effect.

Enter this video, in which Boebert looks like she’s dabbling in the joys of Glamour Shots-style filters. It’s interesting, that’s for sure, but more than her different look, she’s telling people about how a military mother wanted her voice to be amplified. “After I spoke up for our 13 fallen military heroes at the State of the Union address a few of their parents reached out to thank me for recognizing them,” the Rifle Republican wrote on Twitter. “One of the parents encouraged me to share her message. Here it is.”

There’s one glaring problem here. Boebert gives lip service to the supposed rank of the son whose mother she claimed to speak with, and as attorney Ron Filipkowski points out, however, there’s “no such thing” as a “lieutenant corporal.”

Perhaps Boebert meant to say “lance corporal” or something altogether different, but who really knows. (Boy, the midterm elections should be fun!)

Hillary Clinton And Jen Psaki Trolled The Heck Out Of Vladimir Putin’s Silly Russian Sanctions On Them

We’ve now reached the moment in the build-up to a potential World War III when Hillary Clinton dunks on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Earlier today, the Russian Foreign Ministry released a press statement listing President Joe Biden, White House Press secretary Jen Psaki, and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on a “stop list” which essentially prohibits them from traveling to the country or accessing any foreign bank accounts they may have there. As pointless as the publicity stunt was, it now seems that both Clinton and Psaki are having some fun at Putin’s expense over the whole thing.

Clinton took to Twitter soon after the announcement was made, quote-tweeting commentary from Financial Times’ Moscow Bureau Chief Max Seddon, who also poked fun at Russia’s blacklisting.

Later, during a press briefing at the White House, Psaki was asked for her thoughts on what the sanctions would mean for officials on Russia’s naughty list. She answered by correcting a grammatical error — President Joe Biden is actually a Jr. so by not specifying that in the original sanctions announcement, it seem Russia might have blacklisted his late father. Psaki then went on to joke that the sanctions wouldn’t impact anyone’s travel plans, or put a strain on their bank accounts.

“It won’t surprise many of you that none of us are planning tourist trips to Russia,” Psaki told members of the press. “None of us have bank accounts we won’t be able to access, so we will forge ahead.”

Charli XCX Recruits AG Cook For Her Heavenly ‘Every Rule’ Video

Charli XCX is really ramping up the hype for her album Crash before it drops this Friday: She shared “Every Rule” (which she made with AG Cook and Oneohtrix Point Never) yesterday and now she’s back with a video for the single. Charli is joined in the video by Cook as they perform the song in a white, cloudy environment.

A Rolling Stone UK feature from March notes the song is about the end of a long-term relationship and that Charli said of the tune, “It’s funny when you talk about explosions, this really genuine and beautiful love story on this album is also quite traumatic to listen back to, because this is a relationship from my past that no longer exists. Even the story within how we met is quite explosive, I suppose. I really love this song because I’m just saying exactly what happened and it feels very truthful.”

Charli previously said of Crash, “There are a lot of uptempo tracks. It’s dark, it’s kind of sexy and sexual and sort of demonic at points, I suppose. But then there are lighter moments, too. But yeah, I think the whole record is about my relationship with relationships and sex and power.”

Watch the “Every Rule” video above.

Crash is out 3/18 via Atlantic Records. Pre-order it here.

It Looks Like Nirvana Producer Steve Albini Wants To Help Dolly Parton Make A Rock Album

Yesterday, wholesome country icon Dolly Parton took to social media to declare that she decided to “respectfully bow out” of her nomination for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. This sparked a lot of reactions; people mostly praised her for being humble while some others posed questions about the meaning of ‘rock and roll’ in the context of the Cleveland, Ohio museum.

The best reaction so far, though, may be Steve Albini’s. The revered producer, who has worked with legendary artists from Nirvana to Joanna Newsom, quote-tweeted Parton’s announcement with a simple question, a question that may indicate he has interest in working with Parton: “Dolly Parton do you like analog recording.”

The tweet is seemingly a response to the part of Parton’s statement that reads, “This has, however, inspired me to put out a hopefully great rock ‘n’ roll album at some point in the future, which I have always wanted to do! My husband is a total rock ‘n’ roll freak, and has always encouraged me to do one.”

This is not too surprising; Albini is known for his antics. Last year, he admitted that when working on the seminal In Utero with Nirvana, he proposed a wager to the group, saying that if one of them could beat him in a game of pool he would produce the album for free. “I did that with every band I worked with, and no one ever took me up on the offer. It’s not like I’m a particularly good pool player, but I have an equal chance of winning in a fair game,” he said.

Penelope Spheeris On Directing ‘Wayne’s World’ And How She Was ‘Destroyed’ To Not Get The Sequel

It never made any sense. Penelope Spheeris directed Wayne’s World, a movie released 30 years ago (there’s a nifty new Blu-ray in support of its anniversary) that, kind of unexpectedly, went on to become a massive hit and changed people’s vocabulary. (When I was in high school, if you hadn’t seen Wayne’s World you were not going to understand about half of what came out of anyone’s mouth. Even teachers were doing “…not” jokes.) What never made any sense is why Spheeris didn’t come back to direct the sequel, which came out the following year.

There’s always been rumors of a frosty relationship between Spheeris and star Mike Myers. But in even recent interviews, Spheeris has downplayed that. Even ahead, when I first bring it up she calls it an “evil urban myth.” But when I ask, then, why didn’t she direct the sequel? According to Spheeris, she was told if she didn’t make the changes that Myers wanted, she wouldn’t be approved to direct the sequel. Spheeris, as the actual director of the movie, did not make the changes, and she wasn’t invited back to make the sequel. Wayne’s World was a massive hit and we are still talking about it today. Wayne’s World 2 cost twice as much, made less than half as much money and received a tepid critical response.

Ahead, Spheeris reflects on the lasting legacy of Wayne’s World. She takes us through what happened with the sequel, an event that she says “destroyed” her. And she talks about the absolute joy of working with Chris Farley on Black Sheep, a movie she says Paramount gave to her to make up for Wayne’s World 2.

I think I was the perfect age when Wayne’s World came out…

Thirteen?

I was 17. So you think the perfect age is 13? I will say the language of this movie took over my high school.

I watched the movie the other day just to check the new 4K version that Paramount has done, which is gorgeous. And I brought my foster kid with me and she’s 18 and of course she had never seen it. And you know, what’s weird is, she was laughing even though she didn’t get some of the jokes. Like, Nuprin, you know?

Or the Flowbee?

Yeah, exactly. But, somehow, even now, most of the jokes still work obviously, but people still love the movie.

I went to high school in Kansas City and there would be this field where people would go to and just like to drink beer…

Tailgater.

And I remember distinctly, it was very cold, this movie had just come out, and everyone was listening to “Bohemian Rhapsody” and started doing the head banging thing.

Heavy metal parking lot. And I think that’s why a lot of people watch it is because it’s really kind of nostalgic of a time where life was easier, you know? And it reminds them of what fun they had back then. I think that’s why it might have had such a lasting effect, you know?

We don’t talk about Ed O’Neill’s character enough. He’s so funny.

I know. He’s funnier now than he was back then. It’s freaky.

When you kill a man in the heat of passion, they call it murder.”

And you know what? He never broke character.

Oh, I believe that.

Like, he would sit in the corner of the donut shop, talking to himself just to stay in character. I feel like I never met the real Ed O’Neill.

Well, the world’s a twisted place.”

Hey Mike, you’ve got it memorized, man.

I think this movie hits that specific point in time very well. Especially in the Midwest where there’s not much to do and everyone that age at that time is driving around in cars from the 1970s just like Wayne…

You could really relate to it. But you know, that doesn’t explain why the people in Tokyo… Somehow, when it went international, it did very, very well as well. And the guys in the marketing at Paramount told me, Penelope, we’ve done okay over here, we’re going to go wide international and it’s never going to do that. Well, it did.

Also Saturday Night Live wasn’t on internationally.

You know? I hate to admit, I hadn’t thought of that, but you’re right. But Paramount was smart because of what they did. Paramount made up this little booklet that they handed out at theaters in other countries that explained the language. Like they defined “schwing” or “No Way! Way!” or whatever.

Or that the word “not” is coming at a time in the sentence that is not normal.

Exactly. Right. You know, when I heard Barack Obama say “no way” in a big, national address, I went, okay, well Wayne’s World is thoroughly ingrained in our culture.

You recreate the Laverne & Shirley intro. How did that happen? Because it actually looks like the opening intro to Laverne & Shirley.

I’m 90 percent sure that the scene was not written into the original script and it was a product of an idea that Bonnie and Terry Turner, the writers, had because evidently they’d been strolling the lot and they stumbled across what used to be the set for Laverne & Shirley. Convinced everybody that it should be a part of the movie because it was like a free set sitting there on Paramount. I don’t mean to be pointing out the downers here, but the kids today don’t know Laverne & Shirley, but they find it funny anyway.

Saying they are friends with The Fonz doesn’t help?

I don’t think so. But I will tell you, I did go out with Henry right when the show was starting. Okay, I won’t go down that road. Henry Winkler. I went out with Henry right when he was just about to become a giant star. And then I cast him in a movie when we were both old. So we laughed about it.

I wouldn’t have picked up on this in high school, but rewatching I noticed how well shot it is for a movie that didn’t have to be. I think it does enhance what this movie is.

Well, thank you. And, of course, a lot of that credit goes to Theo Van de Sande, the cinematographer. But I will say this, it was a challenge dealing with writers and actors who basically had no movie-making experience and had a lot of TV experience. Because, you know, it’s very different worlds.

They’re used to looking at a four-camera system…

Right. And you know, and the wardrobe is always the same. I mean they never changed their wardrobe each show, you know? They had to hit their marks. They had to find their light. They had to get their eye line right. All that technical stuff with making a film, we sort of had to teach them. But the cool thing is I didn’t have to teach them their characters because they knew them so well, you know?

Reading some of the recent interviews you’ve done, you’ve kind of downplayed the friction between you and Mike Myers. Which, I’ll be honest, I’m not sure I believe because it’s not like he’s known now as being this easy guy to work with. So is them knowing their characters so well a problem? If you give suggestions then I’m assuming that creates tension?

I never really challenged his interpretation of the character. And I think it’s kind of an evil, urban myth that people believe that we didn’t get along on the set.

Well, it’s hard not to notice that you didn’t do the sequel. Wayne’s World was a huge blockbuster and everyone loved it and obviously you’re a huge part of that and it makes no sense that you didn’t do the second one, which isn’t as good and did not do as well.

Well, just if you close your eyes, you could imagine how disheartened and disappointed I was. You know, when both the studio and Lorne said to me, Penelope, if you don’t make the changes that Mike wants, he will not approve you for Wayne’s World 2. I had to make that really heavy-duty decision, you know?

Well, in retrospect, do you feel you made the right one? I mean, you’re the one with the classic movie we are still talking about.

Well, yeah. I mean, and also the other thing is I thought they were trying to make a sequel a little too quickly, but you know, I have no control over that.

Sure.

But I just felt, honestly, just on a personal level, kind of, well, I was destroyed, let’s use that word. When I was told I couldn’t continue working with them, but you know what? I’m grateful for that event because boy did it make me tough. I am so strong. Now I can take any rejection you may have to offer. Thank you.

What’s weird is you hear about stories like this quite a bit, but it feels like most of the time when the movie is as big a hit as it is, people settle their differences and just say, look, we had some disagreements on the first one, but the proof is in the pudding. And it’s weird that did not happen.

Well, it is weird, but you know what? Paramount did do that. Mike didn’t. Paramount gave me Black Sheep with Chris Farley. And it was so much fun to me, that one, too. But you know, here’s the freaky part. When I was having that issue with Mike about directing the second Wayne’s World, he didn’t have a history of being difficult. So I was the only one going, “this guy’s kind of a pain in the ass,” you know?

Oh, I see. So people were like, well, these two just don’t get along for whatever reason. Then later there are more stories…

I mean, yeah, I felt like I was the only one that had a problem. But then later, you’re right. You know, karma came down and blah, blah, blah. But I think if you wait long enough, as my mother used to say, it all comes out in the wash.

Have you had any conversation with Mike or Dana since then? Like a real conversation? Or maybe even in passing like at some premiere or something?

Well, we had a 25-year celebration at the Academy and they were all there and there was a huge reception beforehand and they left me alone in the room to kind of shake everybody’s hand and they, all the guys, were upstairs and they didn’t come down. It was me and Lara Flynn Boyle wondering where the hell are these guys, you know? And then, finally, when the photographers were going to take pictures, all the guys came down and got their pictures taken. Then the Academy showed the movie. But as we were walking to the stage, I said to Lorne, “Lorne, I have to tell you something very important.” And you know, Lorne doesn’t like confrontation. And that’s what he was expecting. And he looks frightened, “What, what is it?” And I said, “You made me a very rich woman.” And he said, “Oh, well, that’s a good thing. Isn’t it?”

You mentioned Black Sheep. It was a good experience?

Oh, it was a wonderful experience and working with Chris was awesome. And he was never loaded when we were working. He always asked me if he could leave early and go to AA meetings. I’m like, of course, man, you just go, because I’ll figure out a way to shoot the rest of the day without you, don’t worry. And it was a real, real pleasure working with him. Spade got a little mad at me because I would shoot more closeups on Farley than Spade.

I bet it feels good every time there’s an election when they play that Farley scene with him on stage telling people to vote.

Oh yeah. Yeah. He’s awesome. He was awesome. He was such a sweetheart.

The Five Best NBA Draft Prospects In The 2022 NCAA Tournament’s West Region

The 2022 NCAA Tournament brings a refreshing set of normalcy, with fan bases across the country tuned into the festivities beginning in mid-March. While all four regions have exciting college basketball teams, each features high-end prospects in advance of the 2022 NBA Draft, and that is especially true of the West Region. The stars are out in a big way in the West, including the No. 1 overall seed Gonzaga, a star-studded No. 2 seed in Duke, and other squads that are chocked full of talent.

DIME will be rolling out a pre-tournament look at each of the regions from a draft prospect and, in this space, we’ll touch on the top five prospects from the West Region. Up first? Gonzaga big man Chet Holmgren.

Chet Holmgren – C/F, Gonzaga

Not everyone is in love with Holmgren, largely because is incredibly skinny at 7’0 and less than 200 pounds. Beyond that, though, Holmgren has been one of the most efficient players in the country this season, and his defensive feel as a rim protector is absolutely outstanding. He’ll need to put on some muscle mass, as everyone knows, but Holmgren’s combination of length, acumen, shooting profile, and positional flexibility makes him a clear candidate for No. 1 overall.

Paolo Banchero – F, Duke

Banchero isn’t exactly a secret, as many had him No. 1 entering college. It isn’t as if Banchero has struggled either, operating as Duke’s most reliable offensive player and the head of the snake for the Blue Devils. On the flip side, he is shooting only 30.6 percent from three-point range and might not be a true No. 1 option on offense. He’s also a pure power forward, which is a bit out of place in the current NBA, but Banchero also has the ability to be the best player on a Final Four team. That wouldn’t be a bad thing for his Draft stock if he can get Duke out of this region.

AJ Griffin – F/G, Duke

It hasn’t been a steady season for Griffin, who had a very slow start coming back from injury. Since he reestablished himself, Griffin has shot the lights out (46.7 percent from three) and showcased his athleticism and feel. He is 6’6, strong, lengthy and able to scale up and down the lineup. It would be helpful for his stock if he had a few big offensive games, but scouts are already tantalized by what happens when it all comes together.

Jalen Duren – C, Memphis

As Memphis has come alive, so has Duren. Over the last two months, he is averaging 14 points, nine rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game, shooting more than 60 percent and flashing his mammoth defensive upside. The 18-year-old has a reported 7’5 wingspan, and scouts will undoubtedly be intrigued if he ends up facing Holmgren in the second round. Regardless, Duren also projects as a player that should look better in the NBA with more spacing and improved guard play around him. He’s already good now, which helps.

Mark Williams – C, Duke

There is a bit of a drop-off after the top four to Williams, with his teammate Trevor Keels and Alabama guard JD Davison among the contenders. The NBA is already falling in love with Williams, though, as the big man has been a defensive force for Duke. He is blocking nearly three shots per game (in 22.9 minutes), and Williams is finishing at more than a 70 percent clip. He is certainly a traditional big man that doesn’t space the floor, but Williams is extremely long, active, and productive.

Phife Dawg’s Estate Reveals The Tracklist For His Posthumous Album, ‘Forever’

It feels a little unbelievable, but just one week from today will mark the sixth anniversary of Phife Dawg’s death. It’s a sobering sentiment, but the load is lightened by an announcement by the late rapper’s estate last year: March 22 will also mark the release of his long-awaited posthumous album, Forever. Today, his co-producer on the album, DJ Rasta Root, shared the album’s cover art and tracklist, which features a who’s-who of longtime collaborators and friends, including Angel Winbush, De La Soul, Dwele, Little Brother, Lyric Jones, Rapsody, and, of course, his A Tribe Called Quest brother in rhyme, Q-Tip.

Production on the album will be handled by 9th Wonder, J Dilla, Khrysis, Nottz, Potatohead People, and more. So far, only two singles from the album have been released: the Busta Rhymes and Redman-featuring “Nutshell Part 2” and “French Kiss Deux,” which features the late J Dilla’s younger brother Illa J. Both revealed an aesthetic similar to latter-day Tribe production, with stripped-down, funk-driven beats custom-made to show off Phife’s easygoing flow.

The road to the album’s release has been kind of a bumpy one; though initially announced almost five years ago, it has certainly taken a while to prepare, with the album getting pushed back to 2021, then pushed back again to 2022. But, the wait is almost over now, and from the looks of things, the project will be well worth it.

Forever is due 3/22 via Smokin’ Needles Records.
