Anna Delvey Is A Fan Of Julia Garner’s, Um, Unusual ‘Inventing Anna’ Accent

Inventing Anna premiered over a month ago, but it’s still hanging around the top of Netflix’s daily top 10 list. This is pure anecdotal evidence, but a not-insignificant chunk of the Shondaland show’s viewership is people (me, I’m the evidence) curious to hear Julia Garner’s accent as Anna Sorokin, the con artist who pretended to be a wealthy socialite named Anna Delvey. Trying to describe the accent is like trying to describe a wine: “There’s German… and Russian… and am I detecting a hint of Gossip Girl, too?”

Sorokin recently appeared on Julia Fox and Niki Takesh’s Forbidden Fruits podcast to discuss Inventing Anna, including Garner’s accent. “It’s just so weird, because the way you hear yourself — like your voice is just completely different when you hear yourself on TV,” she said. After the Unka Jamz actress said that she would give the Ozark and The Americans star’s impression a 6 out of 10 (“She did a little too much. Yours is a little more subtle. She really dove into the accent,” she explained), Sorokin replied, “She was portraying me from like, 2015, 2016, 2017. So now I’ve spent the past four years just in the States. I was surrounded by Americans so maybe my accent was different.”

She added:

“I barely even speak German these days. All I speak is English. Back in the day, I would speak French, German, English on a daily basis.”

It’s a good thing Sorokin approves. Because if she thinks she can stop Garner…

Patton Oswalt Offered Up An MCU Prediction After Foretelling Boba Fett’s ‘Star Wars’ Return In ‘Parks & Rec’

After his classic Parks and Recreation filibuster scene accurately predicted the return of Boba Fett, comedian Patton Oswalt‘s status as a Nostradamus-like nerd-whisperer continues to rise, and now, he’s being asked to see if he can work his magic on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which was also part of his epic eight minute long rant.

While promoting his new movie at SXSW, I Love My Dad, Oswalt was asked what underutilized characters will finally get their due in the MCU, and he made an interesting choice. Via Collider:

“I think that Marvel is going to realize that they had an amazing franchise in their laps for free in their Netflix shows with Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, those two actors. Someone in five years, hopefully sooner, will realize, ‘Do that!’ A low stakes, gritty, street-level superhero noir with those two characters, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing. They’re sitting right there! So I’m predicting that someone at Marvel will realize what they’ve got and they will run with it.”

Oswalt is referring to the comic book series, Daughters of the Dragon, which many Marvel fans was hoping to see happen after Misty Knight and Colleen Wing appeared in Netflix’s Luke Cage. Unfortunately, those hopes were (temporarily) dashed when the Netflix MCU shows were canceled. However, starting this week, all of series will start streaming on Disney+, and on the heels of Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio both entering the MCU at the end of 2021, all the ingredients are falling into place to make Oswalt’s prediction come true.

All The Best New Music From This Week That You Need To Hear

Keeping up with new music can be exhausting, even impossible. From the weekly album releases to standalone singles dropping on a daily basis, the amount of music is so vast it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks. Even following along with the Uproxx recommendations on a daily basis can be a lot to ask, so every Monday we’re offering up this rundown of the best new music this week.

This week saw Megan Thee Stallion and Dua Lipa team up for a star collab and Rex Orange County reunite with Tyler The Creator. Yeah, it was a great week for new music. Check out the highlights below.

For more music recommendations, check out our Listen To This section, as well as our Indie Mixtape and Pop Life newsletters.

Megan Thee Stallion and Dua Lipa — “Sweetest Pie”

Meg and Lipa are two of music’s biggest new stars from the past few years. Now, these titanic forces have come together for a new single, “Sweetest Pie.” Lipa delivers a killer pop hook, as she tends to do, while Meg comes through with a sexed-up verse that’s right in her wheelhouse.

Latto — “Wheelie” Feat. 21 Savage

2021 Queen Of Da Souf highlight “Big Energy” was a big moment for Latto, and now she’s dipping back into that album by linking up with 21 Savage. The fellow Atlanta native previously joined her on “Pull Up” and now he’s on “Wheelie,” which arrived last week alongside an exciting video.

Rex Orange County — “Open A Window” Feat. Tyler The Creator

Tyler The Creator was a major ally to Rex Orange County early in his career and now the two have linked up on Rex’s new album, Who Cares?. Tyler features on “Open A Window,” a smooth, soulful, groove-driven tune into which Tyler slots nicely with a verse.

Florence And The Machine — “My Love”

Florence Welch has remained a regular presence since officially announcing her upcoming album Dance Fever. The LP’s rollout continued last week with “My Love,” a dramatic and theatrical track with a video to match.

Sigrid — “It Gets Dark”

Sigrid established herself as a pop force to watch with her 2019 debut album Sucker Punch, and now she has a new album, How To Let Go, on the way. She previewed it last week with “It Gets Dark,” of which Uproxx’s Adrian Spinelli notes, “Chamber-like piano lays the groundwork for a pop drum beat and wild guitar brimming with joy and an outpouring of energy.

Orville Peck — “The Curse Of The Blackened Eye”

The masked country favorite has been rolling out his upcoming album Bronco in chapters, and the latest of those came out last week and featured four new songs. He dropped a video for “The Curse Of The Blackened Eye,” which sees Peck flexing his classic country-style baritone over a twangy instrumental.

The Black Keys — “Wild Child”

This summer and fall, Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach are heading out on a tour alongside Band Of Horses. It turns out the duo will be performing in support of a new Black Keys album, Drop Out Boogie, which they announced a few days ago. They also shared lead single “Wild Child,” another rock-solid bluesy rocker to add to their esteemed collection of them.

Lil Durk and Future — “Petty Too”

Lil Durk added to his growing discography last week with the 7220 album and one of the highlights is the Future collaboration “Petty Too.” Uproxx’s Wongo Okon notes, “The track flaunts the rappers’ spiteful ways as they admit to being petty at various times in their lives, even with the women that they interact with.”

Father John Misty — “Goodbye Mr. Blue”

The latest tune from Father John Misty’s upcoming album Chloë And The Next 20th Century is “Goodbye Mr. Blue,” which Uproxx’s Alex Gonzalez called “a folksy, guitar-driven track, ridden with Misty’s signature, poignant lyrics.” If you’re wondering what this one will sound like live, Misty performed it on The Late Show shortly after releasing it last week.

Takeoff and Rich The Kid — “Crypto”

The cryptocurrency market isn’t doing too hot at the moment, but Takeoff and Rich The Kid are buying the dip on their new single, “Crypto.” They talk about their amassed wealth on the track, but again, if they put a lot of that wealth into crypto before the dip, Rich might have to change his name to Frugal The Kid.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Kid Cudi Lands Yet Another Acting Role In The Brittany Snow-Directed ‘September 17th’

Kic Cudi (aka Scott Mescudi) is best known for his music, but he’s quite the accomplished actor as well; In recent years, he’s appeared in shows and movies like Don’t Look Up, We Are Who We Are, and Westworld. Now, he’s continuing to flesh out his IMDb page: We already knew Cudi is acting in the erotic slasher film X alongside Brittany Snow, but now Snow has recruited him to appear in September 17th, her directorial debut.

Snow told Variety, “I can’t really speak to it too much, except that Scott’s doing a part in the movie, so that’s cool.”

Cudi noted, “I couldn’t believe that she wanted me in it. She had told me about the movie while we were on set [for X], but she never asked me to be in it. I was like, ‘Maybe she’s waiting to see how [X] turns out.’ It’s gonna be awesome. Really great script.”

Snow also said, “I was watching Ti [West, director of X] a lot during filming of this, and I think that something that I learned from him that I’ll take with me is the specificity of knowing the through line of what you want, and being really strong and clear in your convictions of it. I like to play around on set, but it lends itself really nicely when you know that your director has a complete handle on exactly what they want. I hope I can live up to what everyone else has been doing.”

As for September 17th, Variety describes it, “September 17th follows a woman, named Riley, who struggles with food and body image issues and has recently been discharged from rehab. She soon meets Ethan and must navigate the line between unconditional love and a new addiction.”

John Oliver Swings (Twice) At Justin Bieber While Breaking Down The Frustrating Experience Of Buying Concert Tickets

Last Week Tonight did not ignore the Russian and Ukrainian elephant in the room during the conflict’s third-weekend running. However, John Oliver’s already taken on the subject twice (regarding the CNN-Applebee’s flub and the bizarre, premature Jeremy Renner dreamcasting), and this week, he acknowledged how rapidly the situation’s developing and moved onto skewering Disney’s delayed response to the Don’t Say Gay bill and then the deep dive subject: the annoying, bot-fueled game of high-dollar ticket buying.

Actually, the bots aren’t the whole beef that people have here. Oliver discusses how and why “Ticketmaster is one of the most hated companies on Earth.” He also takes aim at artists who (as Justin Bieber has reportedly done) essentially scalp their own tickets. To skewer this practice, Oliver begins the segment (at around the 0:45 mark) by reminding everyone of that time that Bieber landed (fortunately unharmed) in a hole onstage.

From there, Oliver dives into a rather fascinating exploration of Ticketmaster fees versus ticket-price face value and how, stunningly, some concerts actually only allow for 7% of tickets to be purchased by the consumer with others going to credit-card company client bases and the secondary market. And that leads to a discussion about Ticketmaster (and Bieber) starting the ticket-flipping thing while thinking no one will notice:

“A group of tickets held for Bieber’s tour ended up being released not to the box office but straight to the secondary market. And on one hand, I do get the impulse of “if someone is going to make $246 dollars off that ticket, shouldn’t it be be the person who is doing the performing? But it still doesn’t feel great, does it?”

From there, Oliver delighted in his next move: “And it’s also not going to stop me from showing you that clip of him falling down the hole again. Excellent. I mean, it gets better every time you see it.” That’s where Bieber falls into the hole (again) at the 16:00 min mark above before Oliver warns, “Bieber’s not unique in doing this.” Yup, Metallica and many other artists have been called out for doing the same. And as live performances roar back, those online queues are only going to grow longer.

‘Succession’ Star Kieran Culkin’s Critics Choice Awards Speech Was Endearingly Chaotic

Succession‘s award show dominance continued on Sunday at the Critics Choice Awards, where the HBO series took home Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Kieran Culkin. He looked genuinely shocked that he won over co-stars Matthew Macfadyen and Nicholas Braun, as well as Billy Crudup (The Morning Show), Justin Hartley (This Is Us), and Mandy Patinkin (The Good Fight), and channeled Roman Roy in his fidgety, rambling speech.

Thankfully, he left his phone in his pocket.

“Wow. Thanks. Shut up. Awful. I was just telling Jeremy [Strong, who plays Kendall] how I really hope they don’t say my name. I was really looking forward to that relief of not having to say anything. I have not prepared anything, so anything can come out, so I don’t know what to say here,” Culkin said before thanking the critics with an Owen Wilson-esque “wow.” He also singled out J. Smith-Cameron (Gerri) as his “favorite actor to do scenes with… after Sarah Snook.” Fun fact about the Shiv actress: “Snook’s last name is actually pronounced ‘Snuuk’ but I just can’t do that. Another fun fact, Matthew Macfadyen’s name is David.” Hold for awkward laughter. “I’m just dropping bombs here,” Culkin continued. “It’s true! Look it up. I’m just talking now, I’m just saying things.”

If you want to watch Culkin “dying up here right now,” you can watch his speech above.

Latto Squashes Any Rumored Nicki Minaj Or Cardi B Drama: ‘I F*ck With Both Of Them’

Latto is blowing up once again based off the success of her new single, “Big Energy,” though longtime fans will she really blew up back in the day off “B*tch From Da Souf”. Since her major label debut album, Queen Of Da Souf, Latto has gone through a name change and plenty more, but one thing she won’t do is fall into the trap of pitting female rappers against each other.

That doesn’t mean stan culture won’t try to make it happen anyway, though. When she was promoting her latest single, “Wheelie,” which features a verse from 21 Savage, fans got it in their heads that the song was going to feature Nicki Minaj or Cardi B… and of course that got stans back into a competitive mindset. These two female rappers were basically forced to have beef by a misogynistic industry who seems to think there can’t be more than one woman at the top, but Latto has no intention of doing the same.

“You have to tread lightly with stan culture,” she said recently in an interview with Ebro In The Morning. “Like, ‘I’m team this and I’m gonna die about it.’ I be like, ‘Hands up, don’t shoot me.’ I be like, ‘Whoa!’ For instance, I had clapped back — I’m still a new-school baby — I’m still young. I’m still tryin’ to turn the other cheek […] So, I’m clapping back at somebody, and they’re like, ‘Oh, you’re purposely responding to Nicki Minaj pages!’ I’m like, ‘What the hell is ya’ll talking about? If you come for me, b*tch I’m on that a**. don’t care what club, gang, street you bang, I don’t give a f*ck! And it’s like that. It’s nothing, no ill intent. Everybody knows Nicki is my favorite, you can go look on the internet, I got interviews talking about standing in line for Pink Friday. I got a fake Barbie chain … my mama probably still got it at her house. I was obsessed with Nicki […] and I love Cardi to death, Cardi put me in the “WAP” video. I’ve done interviews with Cardi, I met her face-to-face and she was so humble. I don’t pick sides. That’s not my beef. I f*ck with both of them.”

When Cardi put Latto in that infamous “WAP” video, she definitely helped boost Latto’s career, but Nicki’s influence is also completely evident on the young rapper. Check out the interview up top, Latto gets into squashing the female rapper beef around the fourteen minute mark.

Sigrid Announced Her Second Album, ‘How To Let Go,’ Will Be Out In May

Sigrid season is officially upon us. In case you missed the Norwegian pop star’s debut back in 2019, Sucker Punch immediately established the young songwriter as one of pop’s most interesting new voices. Her quirky, sometimes sad, sometimes funny songs caught the attention of her peers, too. A recent collaboration with the likes of Uproxx cover star Griff for “Head On Fire” — later turned into a supergroup anthem with the addition of King Princess And MØ — helped put Sigrid back on the map for 2022.

After releasing the big, beautiful anthem “It Gets Dark” a few days ago, Sigrid doubled down a few days later by officially announcing her second album. She took to Twitter to let fans know that the album is coming — probably sooner than they expected — and to reiterate her excitement. “Guys, it’s album time,” she began. “My second album How To Let Go is coming May 6th, and I couldn’t be more excited! I’ve been trying to learn how to let go of things, not always easy, but I’m getting there 🙂 making this album has been an absolute joy and I can’t wait for you to hear it!” In a second tweet, she posted the pre-order link, adding: “you can pre-order it now ahhh.”

That’s just a few short weeks away, and likely, we’ll be getting more new music in the meantime. So stayed tuned.
