Dramatic video shows a heroic 3-year-old girl saving her younger sister from drowning in a pool

Warning: The following video contains disturbing imagery.

Security camera footage out of Thailand is a warning to people everywhere about the importance of making sure children are safe around pools. It’s also a wonderful story about a toddler being brave and looking out for her younger sister.

Kana Kanuengnit, 3, and 2-year-old Kaning were hanging around their family’s pool in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand on Friday, April 1 when the incident happened. Their father, 29-year-old Apisit, was watching the kids while their mother was inside the house.

“I was sweeping near the pool and my wife was cooking in the kitchen behind the house,” he said according to Yahoo. “We weren’t planning for any pool activities so I didn’t notice what was happening. But after a moment of me sweeping with my back to the pool, my younger daughter fell into the pool.”

Kaning fell into the 4-foot-deep pool and immediately struggled to keep her head above water. Her older sister, Kana, realized she was in danger and immediately called out to her father, whose back was still turned while he swept near some patio furniture.

The girl screamed to her father that Kaning was in the pool and quickly sprang into action.

“I didn’t know what to do, I forgot to think about my phone and things in my pocket. I threw it all and just jumped in the pool,” Apisit said. The father was fast on his feet and pulled his daughter out of the pool before she sank to the bottom. We’re pretty sure the father could care less about his phone knowing that his daughter is safe.

Apisit hopes that the harrowing video serves as a warning for parents everywhere. “I think this is a great example to remind people that you cannot take your eyes off even for a split second when there are children and water,” he said.

“I want to stress this to parents with small kids and a pool to put up a barrier around the pool if not, they should always be careful,” he added.

The story brings to mind one that Upworthy covered in the 2020. A 3-year-old boy named Henrique in Rio de Janeiro snuck away from his parents and was playing poolside with another child his age named Arthur.

In the video, Henrique is seen stretching to grab an inflatable toy and then falls into the pool. For 10 seconds Henqriue struggles to keep his head above water until Arthur bravely extends his hand and pulls the boy up. If Arthur didn’t have the strength, he could have fallen into the pool and both boys may have died.

Esse vídeo serve de alerta…

Summer is coming up and kids will be playing in or around pools. Every year, around 400 children aged 15 and younger die in a pool or spa incident. Three-quarters of those deaths involve children younger than 5, and 83% of those occur in residential pools.

Three rules every parent should follow:

1. Never leave a child in or near water unattended.

2. Make sure there are barriers around your pool or spa to prevent unsupervised children from getting into the water.

3. Learn how to perform CPR on children and adults.

Tony Hawk shares his ultimate mistaken identity experience: ‘maybe this is where it all ends’

Tony Hawk might just be the least-recognized well-known person on the planet. The iconic skateboarder is now in his 50s, but his legendary status in the skating world—and video game world—has made him a household name. His face, on the other hand, is a different story.

For years, Hawk has shared hilarious stories of people telling him he looks like Tony Hawk. These mistaken-but-not-mistaken identity incidents happen so often that Hawk has made a running joke out of it, often playing along with people’s “Hey, does anyone ever tell you you look like Tony Hawk?” inquiries. Sometimes he tells people he actually is Tony Hawk and they don’t believe him. Sometimes he just says he gets that all the time.

Tony Hawk fans know the joke well, so sometimes they purposefully tell him he looks like himself just for giggles. But a recent elevator interaction combined the ongoing saga’s greatest hits, and may just be, as Hawk says, “where it all ends.”

Hawk shared the story on Twitter.

“This just happened, and maybe this is where it all ends,” he wrote. “Got on an elevator with 3 people. One guy (with his wife), sarcastically: ‘anyone ever tell you…’ and stops. Me (amused): yes, but you’re the first today. His wife: ‘I’m sorry, I tried to stop him from doing the joke.”

Cute, but then it got extra funny.

The elevator stopped and the couple got off on their floor. Then the third person on the elevator asked what the joke was. When Hawk explained that he gets “mistaken” for Tony Hawk, the guy said, “Haha you do look like him!” and then exited the elevator, leaving Hawk standing there alone and perplexed by what just happened.

It’s like the guy unintendedly came up with a perfect punchline to a joke he didn’t even know existed. You can’t even write this stuff.

People loved the perfect storm that occurred on the elevator, and shared other fun Tony Hawk mistaken identity jokes.

And apparently, Tony Hawk isn’t the only famous-but-not-like-Brad-Pitt-famous person to deal with this kind of thing.

Good times. Keep on being your cool, awesome self, Tony Hawk—whether people recognize you for real or not.

BTW, there’s a new documentary about Tony Hawk called “Until the Wheels Fall Off” that just premiered on HBO. Check it out:

A new study completely debunks one of the worst stereotypes about immigrants

One of the most pernicious stereotypes about immigrants in the United States is that they take more from the country than they give back because they are more likely to use welfare benefits than native-born citizens. These stereotypes lead to public policies that reduce the number of immigrants coming into the country and make it harder for those who are here to get green cards.

“Immigrants are more likely to be less educated and to work in low-skilled occupations than native-born Americans. As a result, Americans wrongly think that immigrants are big consumers of welfare,” Alex Nowrasteh, an immigration policy analyst currently working at the Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity of the Cato Institute, told Upworthy.

“Immigrants are also more likely to be ethnic and racial minorities than native-born Americans, which might feed the stereotype that they are more likely to consume welfare,” Nowrasteh added.

These stereotypes create a hostile environment for immigrants that makes it harder for them to succeed and assimilate. It also leads to statutes that unfairly target them.

In 2019, the Trump administration implemented a “public charge rule” to make it harder for immigrants to become U.S. citizens. The new rule said the government could deny green cards to anyone who used anti-poverty programs they legally qualified for such as food stamps, Medicaid, prescription-drug subsidies and housing vouchers.

“Those seeking to immigrate to the United States must show they can support themselves financially,” DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in a press release. The rule was enacted to “promote immigrant self-sufficiency and protect finite resources by ensuring that they are not likely to become burdens on American taxpayers.”

The rule was overturned in 2021.

A recent study published by the Cato Institute refutes these anti-immigrant stereotypes by proving that they consume fewer welfare entitlement benefits than native-born U.S. citizens on a per-capita basis.

The study, “Immigrant and Native Consumption of Means-Tested Welfare and Entitlement Benefits in 2019” by Nowrasteh and Michael Howard, found that in 2019, immigrants—both legal and undocumented—consumed 28% less welfare and entitlement benefits than native-born Americans on a per capita basis. These new figures widened the 7% gap between immigrants and native-born Americans that was found in 2016.

The study reviewed means-tested programs including Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). It also considered Social Security and Medicare.

“Working-age and elderly immigrants tend to consume more Medicaid benefits than native-born Americans in the same age groups, but for all other large programs and many minor ones, natives are more expensive than immigrants on a per capita basis,” the report reads. “This exception is possibly due to a substitution effect: fewer immigrants qualify for the more expensive entitlement programs such as Medicare and more have legal access to Medicaid.”

However, Nowrasteh told Upworthy that if Medicare and Social Security were removed from the study, native-born Americans would still consume 23% more welfare than immigrants. He added that “excluding the entitlement programs narrows the gap but does not close it.”

Studies also show that in the long term, immigrants contribute more to the government’s revenue than they receive in social spending. A study published by The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine found that the value of each immigrant to the U.S. is $259,000.

“If immigrants are assigned the marginal cost of public goods, then the long-run fiscal impact is positive and the short-run effect is negative but very small (less negative than that of natives),” a Federal Reserve summary said.

To put it simply, even if an immigrant uses some welfare benefits after first arriving in the U.S., their net benefit over a lifetime to the system is positive.

But immigrants shouldn’t just be welcomed in America because it helps the bottom line. America should continue its humane duty to be a home for anyone who wishes to contribute to this land of opportunity and live to their full potential.

“Workers, family members, and refugees should be allowed to come to the United States legally in far greater numbers than they do today. The median immigrant worker can expect a 4-fold increase in real income by coming to the United States, even accounting for differences in the cost of living,” Nowrasteh told Upworthy.

The Trump administration’s hardline immigration policies along with the pandemic created a historic drop in immigrants coming to the United States between 2016 and 2021. But with the new administration, there is a chance for some positive change, but there is still a lot of work to be done.

“The Biden administration has mostly reopened legal immigration to the point where it was prior to the pandemic—but that’s about it for the legal immigration system,” Nowrasteh said. “Immigration policy just isn’t a priority for the Biden administration. Immigration enforcement is a mess, which is better than the alternative. So far, the Biden administration has vastly underperformed expectations.”

The United States is suffering from a labor shortage, partly due to a drastic reduction in the inflow of migrants looking for jobs. Allowing more immigrants into the country and expediting the citizenship process would give a much-needed post-COVID jolt to the economy.

Further, the United States has an aging population and a low birth rate, so to keep the country thriving it needs an influx of young immigrants. The financial health of the country’s Social Security and Medicare programs will be severely strained without an increased number of young workers paying taxes to support the elderly.

Immigrants provide tremendous value to America’s culture and productivity and are a vital part of supporting the social programs that guarantee a high quality of life for Americans of all ages. By pushing back against the dated and incorrect stereotype that immigrants are a drain on the system we can help promote policies and a culture that fulfills America’s promise and welcome them with open arms.

Guapdad 4000 Debuts His Laid-Back New Single, ‘Black Iverson,’ On ‘A COLORS Show’

Earlier this week, COLORS Studios announced its partnership with 2K Games to bring a uniquely curated collection of new music to NBA 2K22 for the game’s latest season update. A COLORS Show favorites like Enny, Smino, and more will feature both within the game and on the game’s official Spotify playlist. Today, the collaboration kicked off in earnest with its first artist, Oakland rapper Guapdad 4000, and his brand new single “Black Iverson.”

In true Guapdad fashion, the Bay Area fashionista appears decked out in a brown Marc Jacobs sweater, which complements the tan background behind him and truly pops with its big spot of purple, which matches his sunglasses. Meanwhile, the song is laid-back, with a swirling synth lead and swinging digitized drums that Guapdad uses to relay his rags-to-riches story and winkingly nod to Post Malone’s own breakout single, “White Iverson.” He also makes a slick reference to his Filipino roots, shouting out the savory and sour soup, sinigang.

“They used to try to leave me off the flyer for the shows / Now my trailer say ‘it’s Guapdad’ on HBO,” he rhymes. Talk about a flex; Guapdad recently posted about collaborating with Issa Rae on a mysterious project on Instagram, but the post has since been deleted, presumably to preserve the secrecy of the show in question. Issa’s got a few things in the works with HBO since Insecure wrapped up, so we’ll see which one the 1176 rapper ends up on.

In the meantime, you can listen to Guapdad’s new song “Black Iverson” above and stay tuned to COLORS Studios for the next NBA 2K22 single.

‘The Crown’ Is Looking To Cast Another Controversial Role While Talk Of A Prequel Series Swirls, Too

The Crown continues to be that series about the British Royals that compels even people who otherwise don’t care about the British Royals. The fourth season delightfully (and finally) sh*t all over the fairytale with its depiction of how Princess Diana was treated by the Fam Firm, which included plenty of jealous tantrums from the philandering Prince Charles. This, of course, greatly upset the British government, who requested some kind of “fictional” label on the show, to which Netflix pushed back hard.

Well, more ruffled British feathers could be on the way because the show’s thinking about including a young Kate Middleton in Season 6. Notably, as the Daily Mail and The Sun note, this apparently isn’t a “crucial” role. Rather, this is reportedly seen as “an easy win for The Crown, as it will get more people watching.” And the show might not even go there, if they can’t “find the right candidate,” who would portray Kate as she caught William’s eye at university. Still, look for people to somehow be upset by this because that’s how some British reactions to this show go down.

In related news, Deadline is reporting that Netflix and the Left Bank production house are mulling over a prequel series while the show approaches penultimate season time. Here are some preliminary details:

Any prequel would likely cover the pre-World War Two era or late Victorian era when Queen Victoria reigned. She was the UK’s longest-serving monarch until Queen Elizabeth took that record several years ago.

Deadline understands conversations over the prequel are in their early stages and it is not yet in development nor near greenlight stage.

The upcoming Season 5 of the flagship series will star Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth, Dominic West as Prince Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana. The Crown, however, will officially end following a sixth season, so don’t look for any fallout over Duchesses Kate and Meghan to be a storyline. And don’t expect royal-family superfan Piers Morgan to appear as himself.

Alex G Unveils The Celestial ‘Main Theme’ From His Forthcoming Film Score

Singer-songwriter Alex G — formerly (Sandy) Alex G — has always made eccentric, cinematic tunes that evoke intense emotions. That’s why it’s very fitting that he recently announced that he’s releasing a film score for the forthcoming movie We’re All Going To The World’s Fair. He was tapped by the director Jane Scoenbrun, and he unveiled the first single “End Song” in March. Now, he’s unleashing the poignant “Main Theme,” the week before the soundtrack’s arrival.

The song is an eerie acoustic ballad that’s imbued with celestial energy by an incessant, high-pitched droning and vocals that are used as instruments, repeating unintelligible words that just become floating sounds. Despite the fact that this project is for a film, it’s obvious that he didn’t have to compromise his signature style for it. “I love horror films, but it was also important to me that my film feel more than just scary. I wanted it to feel gentle, sad, personal, and homemade: the kind of ‘horror’ movie that might make you cry,” Scoenbrun said of the track in a statement. “When Alex’s gorgeous, emotive ‘Main Theme’ enters during our opening credits (and then recurs in mutated forms throughout the movie), it’s meant as a signal to the audience of exactly this ambition.”

Listen to “Main Theme” above.

Doechii Goes ‘Crazy’ In Her Surreal, Borderline NSFW New Video

Remember that craze when it seemed like a horde of new female rappers with “Doll” in their names popped up at the same time? I wondered at the time whether Nicki Minaj, who has peppered her aesthetic and music with references to the popular doll Barbie since her ascent, had something to do with it. I say that because I’m wondering again about whether her obsession with Barbie has bled over to yet another wave of new female rap talents thanks to Doechii’s surreal, borderline NSFW new video for “Crazy.”

Doechii and her backup dancers certainly very much resemble Barbie dolls in the video. While they dance mostly nude throughout (save for black thigh-high boots and a few other accessories for the DRAMA), the removal of anything resembling sexual organs makes them look a lot like the oddly sexless Barbie, with blank, nippleless boobs. It’s kind of eerie, which, with Doechii, seems to be par for the course. TDE’s first female rapper loves to subvert expectations and tropes, blending rap with house on her first single “Persuasive” and now messing with perceptions of female rappers as primarily selling sex in her new video.

It’s a lot to process, but that’s what’s making Doechii’s rollout so darn fun. There’s supposedly also an — ahem — “uncensored” video out there, as well. You can find the link on the YouTube above. We aren’t sure whether Doechii is dropping an album in the near future or not, but one thing is for sure: she’s made one heck of an entrance to the rap game.

‘The View’s Ana Navarro Tore Into ‘Snowflake’ Marjorie Taylor Greene For Calling Police Over A Jimmy Kimmel Joke

The ladies of The View came out swinging on Friday morning when it came time to tackle Marjorie Taylor Greene for reporting their ABC colleague, Jimmy Kimmel, to the Capitol Police for cracking a joke about the congresswoman. Earlier in the week, Kimmel roasted Greene for calling members of her own party “pro-pedophile” because they voted to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. Kimmel quipped, “Where is Will Smith when you really need him?” and that was enough for Greene to announce she’d reported the late night comedian to the Capitol Police.

Joy Behar kicked off The View panel by calling Greene “touchy, touchy, touchy” before going right for the jugular. “It’s interesting, she is a joke, and yet she can’t take a joke,” Behar said. But it was Ana Navarro who went all-in on the QAnon congresswoman. After dragging Greene for going to the same Capitol Police she supports MAGA rioters attacking on January 6, Navarro used a favorite conservative insult to describe Greene’s latest meltdown.

Via The Wrap:

“Let’s also remember that this is the same Marjorie Taylor Greene who basically harassed a teenager who had just survived a mass shooting,” Navarro continued. “This is the same Marjorie Taylor Greene who accosted and harassed Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez. So really sweetheart, you can dish it out but you can’t take it? I think in the right-wing culture, they call people like you snowflakes.“

We’d joke that someone should call 911 because there’s just been a murder, but Marjorie Taylor Greene might take it seriously and call the cops, so we’ll just quietly chalk this one up as a win for Navarro.

Gary Payton Made The Case For Why Marcus Smart Is His Defensive Player Of The Year

As the 2021-22 NBA regular season winds to a close, award races and discussions are in full swing. Among the most hotly contested races is Defensive Player of the Year, where it feels like close to 10 players could have a credible case to take home the honor.

Recently, Gary Payton provided his reasoning as to why he deems Marcus Smart the best Defensive Player of the Year choice this season. Payton is the last guard to win the award, which he took home at the end of the 1995-96 season. He said Smart does similar things defensively to him, which includes pressuring a ball-handler full-court, slowing the collective offensive process, and eventually forcing the ball out of the top offensive player’s hands.

“He makes other people handle the basketball, who ain’t supposed to handle the basketball and get into their offense,” Payton said. “He’s done that all year. He has taken the point guard every time he plays ever. … If you change your offense because of one guy, that’s what your supposed to do (as a defender).”

Payton also praised Smart for playing hard and said “he plays with a lot of dog in him.”

“He has changed a lot of things in a lot of the games.”

Smart is the leading defender on the league’s top defense. His ability to excel with an array of responsibilities certainly makes him a legitimate candidate for this season’s Defensive Player of the Year.
