Pusha T Shares His Thoughts On Kanye West And Kid Cudi’s Beef: ‘It F*cking Sucks’

Kanye West and Kid Cudi had a very public fallout at the top of the year, just weeks before Kanye released his eleventh album Donda 2. Their beef, which is still alive today, was centered on Kanye’s frustration with Cudi and Pete Davidson’s friendship, and because of that, Kanye announced that Cudi would not appear on Donda 2. More recently, Kanye and Cudi appeared together on Pusha T’sRock N Roll” on his newly-released It’s Almost Dry album, leaving many to believe that the two patched up their differences. However, Cudi made it clear that the beef was very much alive.

In a recent interview with Vulture, Pusha T shared his thoughts on Kanye and Cudi’s fallout. “It f*cking sucks,” Pusha said. “You know Cudi is my f*cking brother to the end. Just navigating these relationships, this brotherhood, the arguing … it gets public.” He continued, “It’s one thing for us to argue. We all argue — that’s not a problem. It gets out there, whether it’s Ye bickering first, or Cudi coming back with what he says. It’s super-fu**ed up.”

Pusha later recalled the “great energy” that was in the studio when the trio collaborated for “Rock N Roll,” a record that samples Beyonce’s “1+1.” “The day we made this record, everybody was so f*cking happy,” he said. “Ye’s chopping the Beyoncé sample, Cudi happens to come in that day. We see each other, and I hadn’t seen him in a while. He’s like, ‘I gotta get on a record. Are you crazy?’ Cudi did, like, three or four different references. Beyoncé cleared the sample. There was so much great energy around the making of that record.”

You can listen to “Rock N Roll” in the video above and check out Pusha’s full interview on Vulture here.

It’s Almost Dry is out now via GOOD Music and Def Jam. You can stream it here.

Will Smith Has Wound Up In India To Do Yoga And Meditate Almost A Month After His Oscars Slap

It’s been almost a month since Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars, a move that both overshadowed the Academy Award he won shortly thereafter and will likely dramatically change the course of his career. Since then, he’s laid low. Days after the incident, he released a public apology. He later resigned from the Academy and was subsequently banned from attending the show for a decade. However, he hasn’t been since in public since. That changed over the weekend.

As per People, Smith was seen on Saturday at a private airport in Mumbai, India. What’s he doing there? A source tells the publication that he’s there for spiritual purposes. There, he’ll practice yoga, meditate, and presumably work on himself, as he vowed to do in the apology he released weeks ago.

“Change takes time, and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason,” he wrote at the time.

Since the incident, Rock — who was struck after he made a joke about the actor’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith — hasn’t exactly laid low. He’s been doing shows, which have seen a massive uptick in sales. He hasn’t, however, addressed it, though others in his family, including his mom, have. In the meantime, awards shows have already taken precautionary measures to prevent such incidents at their own ceremonies going forward.

Ja Morant Topped Darius Garland And Dejounte Murray To Win The NBA’s Most Improved Player Award

The Memphis Grizzlies made a substantial leap this season, zooming to a 56-26 record and blowing through any rational preseason expectation in the process. Though Memphis is renowned for depth, the Grizzlies are also led by a clear star in Ja Morant and, on Monday evening, the NBA announced that Morant is the recipient of the league’s 2021-22 Most Improved Player award.

Morant averaged 27.4 points, 6.7 assists and 5.7 rebounds in only 33.1 minutes per game this season, shooting a career-best 49.3 percent from the floor. That led to his first All-Star selection as a starting choice from the Western Conference, and Morant is the first MIP winner as a member of the Grizzlies.

Appropriately, he was notified of the win in the midst of a team huddle and in advance of the Grizzlies’ Game 5 matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Though Most Improved Player candidacies are often difficult to parse, Morant made his case in making the jump from fringe stardom to certain superstardom. He averaged more than eight points per game more in 2021-22 and posted career-best numbers in minutes, rebounds, steals, free throw attempts, three-pointers, and three-point percentage. That formula was good enough to outpace Spurs guard Dejounte Murray, who finished second, and Cavs guard Darius Garland, who finished third.

Morant famously indicated a belief that his teammate, Desmond Bane, should have been an MIP finalist in his place, and that exemplifies the impeccable locker room vibes in Memphis. Regardless, Morant is clearly on the rise and he has a piece of league-wide hardware for his mantle at an early stage in a career with a bright future ahead.

The Official NBA Playoff Guide To Guys

There are great paradoxes in sports — leave it all on the field but don’t give anything away, it ain’t over ’til it’s over, both teams played hard — and after the Warriors beat the Nuggets in Game 3, Draymond Green laid down another.

“You gotta give credit to guys who show up in the playoffs, because it’s just not a normal thing around this league,” Green says, “You look around and some guys that you think are Guys, are not Guys in the playoffs.”

If you thought this was an answer about Gary Payton II, and how well he’s been performing in the now 3-1 series, that’s fine. It was. But chances are if you heard this quote a few days ago, or are hearing it for the first time now, you found yourself quietly murmuring those last few words.

Some guys that you think are Guys are not Guys.

Trust Green, Cheshire cat as he can be, to lay this cipher for chaps, this fiddlestick for fellas, at our feet. Because you likely don’t need more to worry about these NBA playoffs, let alone the legitimacy of men, leave it to us, the experts, to get to the bottom of what Green meant.

First, it seems imperative to define the guy in question. That is, the capital G Guy that Green held up as the model for, we can surmise, the lowercase g guys out there. Green would certainly consider himself a Guy and it was Payton II that propelled him to this paradox, so he’s in. Steph Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Jordan Poole, they were all mentioned in Green’s postgame when it came to having capital G guy attributes. Some people are replying on Twitter to that clip saying that Green definitely meant Nikola Jokic, who he’s been slugging it out with under the basket this whole series, however, Green praises the Joker profusely, so he definitely thinks he’s a Guy for sure.

Is Green biased? Absolutely. So for the sake of good data and ultimate clarification, we need to establish a more objective control group. We have to broaden the scope of guys and look back on the business of bros in the league. The criteria for picking guys who are Guys in this sense is several-fold. First, they typically aren’t the stars of their teams. That’s why LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Bill Russell and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar aren’t going to be included. They are 100% guys but they are thee guy, who could exist in an isolated basketball plane devoid of all other dudes and still hold guy perpetuity. Also I can’t imagine including Russell and Abdul-Jabbar in this idiotic exercise. Obviously, Curry and Jokic are modern exceptions, Curry probably the most, and Jokic’s own Guy, Jamal Murray, is absent. Because of that Jokic is the Nuggets’ default star this postseason, but he is a rare star more comfortable being a Guy. You know this because you’ve seen the pictures of him in his harness racing cart. You see where I’m going with this?

Draymond’s guys vs. Guys concept is an evolution of the 16-Game Player theorem, that posits some players are simply more suited to playoff basketball, while others are 82-game players, who thrive in the regular season but don’t create the same impact come playoff time.

Some conclusive, classic guys who are Guys include:

– Robert Horry
– Ray Allen
– Rasheed Wallace
– Derek Fisher
– Manu Ginobili
– Dennis Rodman

More modern guys, pulled from the last half dozen title teams:

– Kyle Lowry
– J.R. Smith
– Khris Middleton
– Alex Caruso
– Harrison Barnes
– Danny Green

And because it’s crucial to illustrate dudes who are still Guys, whether or not they’ve had the chance to contribute to championship teams:

– Steven Adams
– P.J. Tucker
– Jonas Valanciunas
– Kind of the entire roster of the Bulls
– Cam Payne
– George Hill
– T.J. McConnell
– Lu Dort
– Terry Rozier
– Trevor Ariza
– Marcus Smart

Even this year, we are seeing some Emerging Guys, proving themselves as one of those coveted 16-game players.

– Jalen Brunson
– Anthony Edwards (potentially a The Guy)
– Herbert Jones
– Tyrese Maxey

The biggest takeaway from these lists is that Guyhood is always in flux, which makes even tallying lists of guys feel as impossible as holding running water in your hands. Such is the precious resource of being a Guy. It’s also a changeable state of being. For example, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was long a guy with the Lakers, but in 2019-2020 became a certified Guy when the Lakers won the title in the Bubble. Caldwell-Pope eclipsed his own Guydom. He was like the moon moving into the Earth’s shadow, but in his case the moon was him as a Guy and the Earth was him as the guy. Much in the way that all dudes don’t, or can’t necessarily, rock, not all guys are going to get to be, or stay, Guys.

But back to Green’s perceived dig.

In light of the precise, extremely authoritative history of Guys painstakingly laid out here, Green was perhaps only trying to pin down one of the most ephemeral concepts. He didn’t name any guys explicitly who were not Guys, and indeed, one could argue that only guys who didn’t consider themselves Guys already would see themselves in Green’s words. Guys would not think of themselves as not Guys, they would frankly probably not be watching postgame press conferences during the playoffs, either. Green wasn’t out to make us doubt the existence of Guys in general, or Guys in these playoffs, only to make us consider who is one by examining what we think about when we think about guys.

Stock Tied To Trump’s Truth Social Plummeted After It Was Reported Elon Musk Was Officially Buying Twitter

Truth Social, the social media platform soft-launched in February by Donald Trump, has not, to it lightly, been a hit. Despite his staff’s attempts to spin it as somehow a win, it’s not. No one uses, not even the former president that owns it. That’s fine, because if people were using it, they’d probably be annoyed it was crashing regularly. It couldn’t even score a win the day Twitter, the world’s social media king, was bought by the guy trying to make questionable brain implants.

As per CNBC, Digital World Acquisition Group, the blank-check company set to take Truth Social public, saw its stocks fall on Monday, shortly after it was announced Elon Musk was officially purchasing Twitter. The stocks fell about 13% in a single day. Indeed, it’s not been a great year for the company, with stocks falling precipitously for the last two months.

Will the continuing bad news make Trump decamp for Twitter, which could reinstate his account under Musk? At least now it won’t.

“No, I won’t be going back on Twitter,” Trump told CNBC, saying he was”disappointed by the way I was treated by Twitter.” Instead, he’ll be “on Truth Social within the week,” having all but neglected it thus far. Twitter permanently suspended back in early January 2021, shortly after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot carried out by his whipped-up supporters.

Sky Ferreira Signed With A New Music Publisher For Her Highly-Anticipated Sophomore Album

Recent teasers led fans to believe that Sky Ferreira was finally going to release the follow-up to her debut album, Night Time, My Time, and she even seemed to share a clip of a new song called “Don’t Forget.” Don’t worry Sky, we haven’t! In the meantime, Sky seems to be making moves behind closed doors, too. According to a report from Variety, she signed with a “global independent music publisher” called Third Side Music.

It’s been about nine years since her first album came out, she’s been slowly but surely releasing new music, like 2019’s “Downhill Lullaby,” and collaborating with artists like Charli XCX on left-field pop tunes. According to Variety Third Side Music’s Creative VP/Director of A&R, Brontë Jane, was the one to sign Sky. So far, the company’s roster also includes artists like Courtney Barnett, Future Islands, and Kurt Vile. Sky is listed on the website as one of the publisher’s clients, and in their “recently additions” section.

“Sky is an unparalleled career artist who has proven to be a true visionary with her craft time and time again,” Jane told Variety. “I’m honored to welcome someone so incredibly singular to the TSM family.” If this means more music is definitely on the way, then it’s good news in my book.

The Innovative Past, Present & Future Of Afrobeats Star Tekno

As the night grows longer at Balneario de Carolina, there is still no sign of Tekno. Hours before the Afrobeats sensation is scheduled to perform at Afro Nation’s debut evening in Puerto Rico, I receive a text that Tekno, along with budding Afrobeats artist CKay, is on the same delayed jet. According to his manager, Mario, aka Rio, Tek is coming from Atlanta where he had linked up with Toronto producer WondaGurl. It’s one of the very first things I try to ask Tekno about when he arrives but he’s tight-lipped about it.

Hailing from Nigeria, Tekno’s work with A-list American artists is nothing new. His ability to whisk melodic harmonies and live instruments into something that sounds familiar and unknown at the same time is unmatched. Clearly, it doesn’t go unnoticed. In 2019, Drake and Swae Lee tapped in with him for “Won’t Be Late” and Beyonce infused The Lion King: The Gift with Tekno’s essence on “Don’t Jealous Me.” With the Afrobeats sound taking over the globe, more collaboration across nations is expected. However, a chance to be part of a Beyonce-anything is no small feat.

“Well for one, I didn’t meet Beyonce yet,” he reveals when he arrives. “It was just this camp in LA and we know everyone is coming here. This is the meeting point where we all meet together and make music. For me, as an artist, I freestyle music. I just literally went in there and listened to the songs they had. I really liked that beat. I did my thing on it and somehow, I made the album. There was no personal sh*t where I was involved with Beyonce or something. But hopefully, I will do that.”

Beyonce and Drake aren’t the only high-profile artists that are keen on the sounds of Tekno Miles. Grammy Award-winning musicians Elton John and Billie Eilish (who really loves Tekno) are entranced with his futuristic musicality, too. As an acclaimed, musical innovator of the current Afrobeats era, his colorful signature soundman-ship is a vibrancy that cannot be tamed — as it is meant to be admired.

“These people that you mentioned are people that are making music on the highest level,” he says. “They do their research, and as an artist, you listen to a plethora of sounds. These people are all saying that they like my sh*t? All I got to do is keep doing what I’m doing. It’s not like I try to prove a point to nobody. It’s a good thing to know this kind of people f*ck with your sh*t. I don’t have to come out and try and tell nobody, ‘Oh look, I’m the best. I’m this, I’m that.’ It speaks for itself.” As the saying goes: real recognize real.

During our interview, Tek relaxes on a small couch inside of his trailer, conspicuously adorned with a black Balenciaga tee with diamond-encrusted chains on top of diamond-encrusted chains, accessorized with a black and red Dolce & Gabanna bucket hat and dark shades. The small space is filled with people taking pictures, greeting each other, and buzzing with excitement. Eventually, Rio clears nearly everyone out of the trailer. CKay’s “Emiliana” can be heard booming across the festival grounds, which means Tekno is up next.

However, there seems to be a problem. The festival’s organizers are running out of time and wondering if Tekno will be available to perform tomorrow. The festival is getting clowned on Twitter for replacing Burna Boy with Rick Ross and now because CKay and Tekno were behind schedule due to the delayed jet. The organizers were stressed and pleading with Rio. Rio’s answer to them is a flat no so a rush to the stage commences.

Through the rain and midnight sky, the crowd is still packed. Explosive energy overflows from the audience, surrounding Tekno as he jams through a string of his popular cuts like his breakout hit “Pana,” “Mufasa” and his self-appointed North Star, “Skeletun.” Soon, the stress from the night washed away with the rain. The platform turned into a party. Randomly, Michael Blackson was all up on stage dancing and singing to every single song.

ngl #tekno is really the 🐐for pulling this off rain and all 🙌🏽🔥 @tekno miles #livemusic #afronation #pana #afrobeats

♬ original sound – UPROXX Music

“I feel like whoever is trying to get to know Tek more, I feel like you need to listen to ‘Skeletun,’” he suggests after the show. “Everyone got their preference and I have a plethora of music out, so they’re going to choose for themselves. But, I feel like ‘Skeletun’ is a good way to get in. It’s different. It’s unique. It’s one of the songs I made with my eyes closed.”

Tek also performs his melodic summer-ready vibe “Jinja” — which is part of a collection of free-spirited singles that are not tied to any specific project. Tekno is making music in freestyle mode, rather than working toward a full-length project. “[‘Jinja’] is another way of saying someone excites you or when you see them, they make you smile,” he said of the song. “Jinja can be however you decide to describe it. It could be like how LeBron James plays and it gives you ‘jinja.’ It depends on how you want to put it.” The song indeed gives “jinja” and should be a no-brainer add to summer playlists everywhere.

@uproxx

spotted @CKay + @tekno miles fresh off the @Afro Nation stage ✨🙌🏽 #fyp #afronation #ckay #tekno #teknomiles #afrobeats

♬ love nwantiti (ah ah ah) – CKay

Tekno’s exit from the festival is just as chaotic as it was getting to the stage. Loads of black service cars and sprinters are waiting for us to board them as we step off the stage. As we walked towards the black fleet, Tekno and CKay crossed paths. Quickly, cameras begin flashing to capture a special moment between two trailblazing artists representing the now and future of Afrobeats.

“That’s actually the first time I met CKay,” he told me. “We just literally flew to play the show. So if anything plays out in the future, we’ll let y’all know.” With Tek — if you haven’t learned by now — the music will come when it arrives. For now, he’s just giving the fans something to vibe out to, giving them “Jinja” — both the song and the feeling.

Must-See Peru: Amateur Travel Guru Rhaven McIver On Her Foolproof Guide To Peru

While the full-time travel influencers and adventurers we see on social media are certainly inspirational, or at least fun to follow, it’s nice to know that people with everyday jobs can travel the world too. Rhaven McIver, for instance, is a nurse anesthetist, who just happens to spend whatever free time she can scrounge exploring new places around the globe.

When she’s not in the doctor’s office, she’s sharing her travels on on Instagram and her YouTube channel, “Time With Rhay” in the hopes of encouraging people of all kinds to get out there and adventure.

“I have been coined ‘the trip planner’ by all my friends and family,” McIver says. “They know when they travel with me, they don’t have to worry about anything but having a great time. Recently I’ve begun planning trips for other people who have no idea where to begin, and I’m launching my group trip business this spring!”

McIver’s love for travel has connected her to an abundance of new people and wonderful places, and one of her favorite destinations to date is Peru. From Machu Picchu and the striking Rainbow Mountain to the mouthwatering food and lively culture, Mclver is sharing her guide to Peru and why everyone needs to visit below.

WHY PERU?

I chose Peru because I want to visit all of the World Wonders and that’s where Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is located. After some research, I realized there was a lot of other stuff to see and do in Peru, and it was also a relatively inexpensive country to visit with maximal enjoyment, which was a plus!

What’s one thing that every first-time visitor should see or do in Peru?

Well if you’re going to go all the way to Peru you must see Machu Picchu! It’s so amazing to see something most of us have seen or read about in history books. When you go there, a guide will show you around and you will learn the history behind, which is pretty amazing. You can book a tour to Machu Picchu from Cusco, which is one of the cities you’ll definitely want to visit there. You’ll have to take a train ride to get there and then a bus, but don’t worry, it’s super scenic!

What was your absolute favorite meal of your trip?

I spent a lot of time in Cusco, and my favorite dish happened to be a signature Peruvian dish called Lomo Saltado. It’s a stir fry that typically combines marinated strips of sirloin (or other beef steaks) with onions, tomatoes, french fries, and other ingredients, and is typically served with rice. I ordered that meal on four separate occasions because it was that good!

As far as drinks go I enjoyed the signature drink called Pisco Sour. I’d never had Pisco before my trip, but the best way I could describe the way it tastes would be a mix between wine and brandy. Two restaurants I really enjoyed in Cusco were Inka Grill and Morena Peruvian Kitchen. I’d definitely start by ordering the signature dish and drink!

Peru Travel Guide
@dorhaymi

What’s the best Peruvian destination for spending time in nature?

I would say Cusco is a great city to visit because it’s a gateway to get to must-see places like Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain. You’ll get amazing photos and views at these two places (may even see an alpaca or two on your journey) and there are tons of tours to choose from. The city of Cusco itself was also just a nice place to walk around and explore as well. Llamas and Alpacas were everywhere, so you’ll definitely be able to meet one if you so desire!

Peru Travel Guide
@dorhaymi

Do you have a favorite outdoor excursion or adventure activity to do in Peru?

Aside from Machu Picchu. Rainbow Mountain is a mountain that literally looks like a rainbow once you get to the top. You can take a horse up most of the way or walk, but either way, there’s a point where the horse cannot go because it’s too steep and you’ll have to walk up. The hardest part about the hike is the altitude sickness many people experience due to the elevation. Please don’t do this tour on your first day to Cusco as it takes a day or so to get somewhat used to the elevation change. It’s also super cold up on Rainbow Mountain so dress warm!

Another super cool excursion was visiting Huacachina, Ica which is a desert. On the tour I booked, I did sandboarding and rode the dunes which was a lot of fun! I didn’t know there was a desert in Peru until I booked my trip. The best way to get there is a tour from Peru’s capital, Lima. The tour leaves super early and comes back late at night, but it’s totally worth it! I stayed in Lima for two nights specifically to do this tour, then I headed to Cusco for the remainder of my trip.

What was the coolest hotel or place you stayed?

I really enjoyed staying at the JW Marriott El Convento in Cusco. It was a beautiful hotel with hospitable staff and it was within walking distance from everything in the city. Every morning they have a baby alpaca visit the hotel’s courtyard and you can feed her and take photos with her as well.

If you’re looking for something more relaxing and even more upscale, Tambo Del Inka was a great stay. It’s about an hour and fifteen minutes from the center of Cusco. They had a beautiful spa and pool and the lobby is beautiful. As soon as you walk in you feel relaxed, and staying there at the end of an adventurous trip was everything I needed.

Lastly, if you’re feeling daring, the Sky Lodge is a very cool place to stay. They built mini lodges on the side of a mountain and you have to climb up to get there. The climb was not bad at all, but if you’re scared of heights this isn’t the stay for you. I didn’t stay here but I went up for lunch, which is another option if you’d rather not stay the night.

@dorhaymi

What’s something most people don’t know about Peru?

People may not know that in Cusco specifically, the altitude is much higher than what most of us are used to, to the point that it can cause altitude sickness — which most people experience when visiting Cusco. The symptoms can range from mild to severe, and can include nausea, headaches, and feeling short of breath.

I was super exhausted my first day in Cusco and I knew about the altitude sickness so I was prepared to just rest that first day. One remedy is coca leaf tea or coca candy which helps alleviate the symptoms, and you can get those everywhere in Cusco including at your hotel. Some people also buy a small oxygen canister to help with the shortness of breath.

Best time of year to visit?

The best time to visit would be between May and October which is the dry season. I went in September and the weather ranged from 65 to 75 degrees (the desert was about 80 to 85) which was perfect.

Characters from ‘Encanto’ get made into portraits so lifelike they look like real people

What do you get when you mix artificial intelligence with editing software?

Mind-blowing images, apparently.

Brazilian digital artist Hidreley Leli Dião creates ultra realistic portraits of beloved cartoon characters as well as historical figures.

The magic is in a unique blend of Photoshop, FaceApp, Gradiente and Remini, according to his contributing article on Bored Panda. Using this formula, even The Simpsons characters feel like real people you would pass on the street.

Some of Dião’s latest works include the characters of Disney’s “Encanto,” like:

Mirabel

The face shape! The hair! The smile! He nailed it.

Luisa

To no one’s surprise, Luisa was highly sought after by fans.

Bruno

I think the song will change to “Everybody Is Talking About Bruno” after seeing this picture.

Isabela

A portrait perfect enough for Miss Perfect herself.

Camilo

It’s like he could hop out of the frame and start talking to animals in real time. Wow.

Pepa

As a fellow redhead constantly trying to keep my emotions at bay, this one was my personal favorite.

Julieta

Here is Mirabel’s mother Julieta, giving off major Aunt Voula vibes from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.”

And, of course,  Abuela Madrigal

I think it’s safe to say even if Dião doesn’t have a magic door like the Madrigal family, he’s got superpower: digital wizardry.

But of course, this is not Dião’s first Disney deep dive. Feast your eyes on some of these:

Carl Fredrickson from “Up”

Moana from “Moana”

Ariel from “The Little Mermaid”

Also Prince Eric

Pocahontas from “Pocahontas”

Joe Gardner from “Soul”

Hans From “Frozen”

Another long lost Hemsworth brother, rediscovered?

Are you more of a history buff than a Disney nerd? Never fear. Dião’s work has something for everyone.

One collection includes what certain celebrities that met an early death might look like today, such as:

Amy Winehouse

Bruce Lee

John Candy

Janis Joplin

Prince

Marilyn Monroe

Another reimagines what historical figures might have look like in modern times:

George Washington

Benjamin Franklin

Napoleon

Leonardo da Vinci

Mozart

Beethoven

Sir Isaac Newton

William Shakespeare

Vincent Van Gogh

Marie Antoinette

Cleopatra

Alexander the Great

And just for fun, here’s what the Statue of Liberty might look like as a real person:

Thank you Hidreley for giving us some genuine wonder to peruse through on the internet. If you’d like to see more of Hidreley’s work, you can follow his Instagram here.

Teen with a fishing magnet found a safe full of cash. And then he returned it all to its owner.

A new trend in treasure hunting called magnet fishing has blown up over the past two years, evidenced by an explosion of YouTube channels covering the hobby. Magnet fishing is a pretty simple activity. Hobbyists attach high-powered magnets to strong ropes, drop them into waterways and see what they attract.

The hobby has caught the attention of law enforcement and government agencies because urban waterways are a popular place for criminals to drop weapons and stolen items after committing a crime. In 2019, a magnet fisherman in Michigan pulled up an antique World War I mortar grenade and the bomb squad had to be called out to investigate.

Fifteen-year-old George Tindale and his dad, Kevin, 52, of Grantham, Lincolnshire in the U.K., made an incredible find earlier this month when they used two magnets to pull up a safe that had been submerged in the River Witham.

George has a popular magnet fishing YouTube channel called “Magnetic G.”

After the father-and-son duo pulled the safe out of the murky depths, they cracked it open with a crowbar and found about $2,500 Australian dollars (US$1,800), a shotgun certificate and credit cards that expired in 2004. The Tindales used the name found on the cards to find the safe’s owner, Rob Everett.

Everett’s safe was stolen during an office robbery in 2000 and then dumped into the river. “I remember at the time, they smashed into a cabinet to get to the safe,” Everett said, according to The Daily Mail. “I was just upset that there was a nice pen on my desk, a Montblanc that was never recovered.”

The robber, who was a teenage boy, was apprehended soon after the crime because he left behind a cap with his name stitched inside.

The father and son met up with Everett to return his stolen money and the businessman gave George a small reward for his honesty. He also offered him an internship because of the math skills he displayed in the YouTube video when he counted the Australian dollars. “What’s good about it is, I run a wealth management company and… I’d love him to work for us,” Everett said.

Although the safe saga began with a robbery 22 years ago, its conclusion has left Everett with more faith in humanity.

“I was just amazed that they’d been able to track me down,” he said. “There are some really nice and good people in this world. They could have kept the money, they could have said they attempted to get hold of me.”

“There’s a big lesson there. It teaches George that doing good and being honest and giving back is actually more rewarding than taking,” Everett added.

Treasure hunting isn’t the only allure of the hobby for George. His mother says the hobby has taught him a lot about water pollution and its effects on local wildlife. “George is very environmentally conscious. He always has been since primary school,” she said. “When he first started to do this, he was after treasure. Everything ends up in the rivers and canals.”
