AriZona Iced Tea co-founder refuses to raise price above 99 cents, inflation be damned

In 1992, a new canned iced tea brand arrived in convenience stores throughout the U.S. The large, Southwest-themed can of AriZona iced tea would set you back $0.99, nearly the cost of a gallon of gas.

I was in high school in 1992. I now have adult children, gas prices are more than quadruple what they were back then and that same can of iced tea costs … $0.99.

The folks at AriZona Iced Tea haven’t changed their recommended selling price in 30 years, through various periods of inflation, economic upheaval and a global pandemic. Even now, as COVID-19 and war in Europe is squeezing inflation to uncomfortable places, as even the cost of the aluminum to make the cans is going up, AriZona is refusing to budge on its base price.

Unlike many popular drink brands that are owned by large parent companies such as Coca-Cola or PepsiCo, AriZona is privately owned. That gives the people in charge the ability to make radical financial choices like this.

“I’m committed to that 99-cent price,” AriZona co-founder and chairman Don Vultaggio told the Los Angeles Times. “When things go against you, you tighten your belt.

“I don’t want to do what the bread guys and the gas guys and everybody else are doing,” he added. “Consumers don’t need another price increase from a guy like me.”

“A guy like me,” to be clear, is a company founder worth $4.3 billion who sells around three billion cans of tea per year. So yeah, he really doesn’t need to pinch the average American to maximize his profits at this point. However, “don’t need to make more money” isn’t often a real-world reason for businesses to not try to make as much as they possibly can, regardless of how it impacts consumers.

Of course, most of us don’t expect prices to remain steady forever. We expect incremental price increases over time, and don’t generally mind as long as we don’t feel any drastic changes. But it’s definitely refreshing to see businesses that insist on keeping prices low, especially when so many take advantage of inflation news to gouge people unnecessarily.

Take Costco, for instance. You can buy a ginormous hot dog, top it with all the ketchup, mustard, relish and onions your heart desires, and wash it down with a 24-oz soda for a ridiculous $1.50. The meal combo has been the same price since 1985, which resulted in an absolutely epic (and also totally true) tale of Costco founder Jim Sinegal telling Costco CEO Craig Jelinek, “‘If you raise the [price of the] effing hot dog, I will kill you.” Rather than raise the price, Costco created its own hot dog manufacturing plant.

AriZona isn’t just sitting back and taking the hit, though. One way it’s cutting costs is by narrowing the can at the top to use less aluminum, the price of which has gone up due to tariffs in addition to overall inflation.

“If you keep doing those things, you can kind of offset costs and rising costs, and get the consumer value and the ability to buy your product and everybody’s happy,” Vultaggio explained to TODAY.

“Everything (people are) buying today there’s a price increase on,” he said. “We’re trying to hold the ground and hold for a consumer who is pinched on all fronts. I’ve been in business a long time and candidly I’ve never seen anything like what’s going on now.”

In a world that’s experienced so much change and upheaval in recent years, it’s nice to know that at least one thing is holding steady—even if it is just a can of iced tea.

(Also nice to now they have a sense of humor about it. Check out their April Fool’s Day tweet with their 9 cent mini-can.)

Bhad Bhabie Says She’s Made Over $50 Million From OnlyFans And Is Sick Of ‘Cash Me Outside’ Jokes

From a viral sensation on Dr. Phil to a platinum-selling rapper to a straight-up star on OnlyFans. This is the Bhad Bhabie experience. In a recent Instagram Live video, Bhad Bhabie (whose real name is Danielle Bregoli) spoke candidly mainly about why she’s sick of being referred to as “the cash me outside girl.” And in the process, revealed a lot about how much money she’s made on OnlyFans.

“We don’t call people in the real world… celebrities, our family members…we don’t call them oh, ‘the girl who spilled the milk,’ or whatever,” she said in the video in between puffs from her vape pen. “We call them by their real name… So you call them by how you found out about them? Why does that only happen with me?”

The seven-minute diatribe went on, and while she was clearly peeved, there was never a moment where she lost control. This was just airing out grievances and it was actually a fairly decent commentary on celebrity internet culture.”It’s like y’all have to degrade who I am? If there is a way that you could put me down in a tiny way or a huge way, y’all will find a way to do it. I’m not saying it’s the end of the world, but you know it’s being ignorant.”

Then, as she offers alternatives to what she could be referred to instead, she spewed out an alarming figure: “Call me the youngest female artist to go platinum… call me some sh*t like that… the girl who got a million-dollar make-up deal, the girl who made over f*cking $50 million on OnlyFans… When you try to find a way to be annoying about something, it’s just kinda weird.”

A Pitcher Speared A Hitter Rounding Third After A Home Run In A Texas College Baseball Game

There are a number of unwritten rules in baseball that dictate proper etiquette on the diamond, and they can be tricky to parse out and may even vary from place to place. However, generally, spearing an opponent is considered bad form and grounds for fighting, so it comes as little surprise that the benches cleared in a Texas college baseball game between Weatherford College and North Central Texas College when exactly that happened.

NCTC’s Josh Phillips hit a two-run homer off of Weatherford pitcher Owen Woodward to give NCTC the lead in the sixth inning, and as he got to third base, Woodward threw off his glove and sprinted to Phillips, hitting him with a spear that would make Goldberg blush.

I have no idea what happened between the time Phillips made contact with the ball and the point this video starts, but there is nothing he could have done that would’ve deserved this. I would love to see whatever happened, because it better have been an all-time home run celebration — like, maybe he did cartwheels down the entire first base line — because if it was a bat flip and some trash talk, this is an outrageous reaction.

Woodward probably won’t play much more baseball this season, but the Weatherford football team, if there is one, surely will be making a call to see if he’d like to play linebacker in the fall. The best part of the video is Phillips completing his home run trot, complete with the point to the sky as he crosses home plate, as Woodward is being escorted off the field by his teammates.

Fans Really Want A Port Of ‘Star Wars: Rogue Squadron’

There have been a lot of Star Wars games. While video games related to the franchise have not been nearly as common over the last decade, it used to be that Star Wars games were a regular part of the industry and something that fans got excited for. With LucasFilms Games recently forming though, and dropping exclusivity, it has given fans a chance to not only play new Star Wars games but also re-experience some old ones.

Aspyr Media is one of those companies giving fans the opportunity to get back into older Star Wars games, and is currently in the process of remaking Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic after it just finished porting Star Wars: Force Unleashed to the Switch. With both of these titles under their belt, it led to Twitter user Sam Schumacher asking if the company had plans for a port of Rogue Squadron. The company gave an honest answer, if there was a demand for one then sure!

For anyone that might not know, Rogue Squadron is one of the most popular series of Star Wars games ever made. It let many fans relive iconic moments from the movies, such as blowing up the Death Star and the battle on Hoth, but largely through the pilot’s seat. The ability to fly an X-Wing or a Tie Fighter was a dream for many the first time they watched those movies and it let fans experience that. So unsurprisingly, plenty of fans have been letting Aspyr Media know about the demand for a Rogue Squadron port.

The messaging is clear Aspyr: Everyone wants to play Rogue Squadron again! Whether it’s a port or remake, let’s see it happen.

Here’s Everything New On Netflix In May 2022, Including ‘Stranger Things 4’ And ‘The Pentaverate’

Netflix isn’t here for any of that bad news. Instead, they’re forging ahead with the return of a fan-favorite series that’s been gone too long. In addition, the return of Mike Myers will go down on the streaming service, and when you’re done with all of that, there are some R-rated robots and a nuclear-disaster documentary series for those who got reeled in a few years ago by HBO’s Chernobyl.

After you’re done with all of the fresh original offerings (and there are many more below in the full list), also take a peek at the incoming library additions. Those include multiple Jackass entries along with some followup seasons of Servant of the People, starring future Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a role that might have prompted life imitating art.

Here’s everything coming to (and leaving) Netflix in May

Stranger Things 4: Volume 1 (Netflix series streaming 5/27)

Bad hair abounds as darkness once again descends upon Hawkins, Indiana. Hopefully, there will be some answers regarding the Upside Down, and The Duffer Brothers are promising that this season’s delay is down to it simply becoming so big. Also, it’s spring break! But it’s not a fun time, since there’s new terror on the horizon and possible war. Fortunately, the gang is all back, including Millie Bobby Brown, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, and more. Also, Robert Englund will bring some Freddy Krueger flavor ahead of a fifth and final season.

The Pentaverate (Netflix series streaming 5/5)

Mike Myers (he’s back) wasn’t content to play a few characters in this series, so he decided to portray eight different personalities. Take that, Bridgerton netball prop. The show revolves around the centuries-long aftermath of a catastrophe (the Black Plague of 1347), after which a secret society came together to make sure that humanity’s sh*t doesn’t go off the rails again. Since there (probably) won’t be an Austin Powers 4, we can all relax and enjoy Myers while feeling grateful that this isn’t a Love Guru sequel.

The Lincoln Lawyers (Netflix series streaming 5/13)

You may have seen the Matthew McConaughey-starring film, and here’s a TV series that’s also based upon the bestselling novels by Michael Connelly. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo stars as Mickey Haller, who runs his law practice out of his Lincoln Town Car, and that includes a high-profile murder case, so no problem, right?

Meltdown: Three Mile Island (Netflix documentary series streaming 5/4)

The team behind Erin Brockovich presents this limited series about how ordinary people stepped up to work extraordinary feats after a near-catastrophe at a Pennsylvania nuclear plant. Expect to see archival footage and reenactments along with home video that’s never been presented before in a public forum. In the end, director Kief Davidson (The Ivory Game) will also take viewers through the perspective of whistleblower Richard Parks to see how this terrible nuclear incident really went down.

Love Death Robots David Fincher
Netflix

Love, Death & Robots: Volume 3 (Netflix series streaming 5/20)

The Tim Miller and David Fincher combo can’t be stopped in this series that dives into a wide range of genres in animated form. So, expect fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and some sexiness, all while these R-rated robots hum towards comedic apocalypses and ancient evils. What else would one expect from the helmers behind Deadpool and Mindhunter?

The Tonys Have Issued A Hard-And-Fast Rule To Ward Off Any Onstage Slapping Fiascos In Advance

Now that The Slap has turned award ceremonies into a MMA match waiting to happen, The Tony Awards are already getting ahead of any potential fisticuffs by making it clear that if anything like the Will Smith and Chris Rock incident goes down, they won’t hesitate to toss folks out. Even though this year’s show is nearly two months away, the Tony Awards let attendees know that it will have a zero tolerance policy for violence at the event.

Via IndieWire:

A letter to potential ticket buyers, sent by Tony Award Productions, included a new warning in its FAQ section, writing, “The Tony Awards has a strict no violence policy. In the event of an incident, the perpetrator will be removed from the event immediately.” The “no violence policy” was issued among other rules of attendance including black tie attire, proof of COVID-19 vaccinations, and non-transferable tickets.

The Tony Awards announcing its “no violence policy” arrives just as the discourse around The Slap has finally become a dull roar. For at least two weeks following the Oscars, Smith assaulting Rock onstage has dominated headlines as past and present hosts weighed in on the controversy, and people watched as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences weighed how to punish Smith who had preemptively resigned. He was eventually hit with a 10-year ban from all Academy events. However, that does not prevent him from still being nominated for an Oscar.

Meanwhile, Rock is just trying to get on with his comedy tour without The Slap hanging in the air. Although, he did joke that he finally has his hearing back.

Tekashi 69 Says He Was Flexing With Fake Cash In Recent Videos After Receiving Several Lawsuits

Controversy magnet Tekashi 69 claims he’s been flexing with fake cash after receiving several lawsuits over missed shows and late payments. He’s currently on the hook for a handful of cases, including one for his involvement in a 2018 robbery, two for skipping on shows after being paid upfront, and one for an unpaid bill to his former security company. All told, he’s in a bad way — or at least, that’s what he wants the courts to think, telling a judge he’s “struggling to make ends meet” and may declare bankruptcy.

This is why it was odd to see him on his social media flexing stacks of cash as he strutted in his driveway in a video on Instagram, boasting, “This is really my lifestyle.” He also flashed armloads of jewelry and a fleet of sports cars.

However, on Monday, he seemed to have a completely different attitude during an appearance on TMZ Live. When asked about $1 million in restitution he owes in the robbery case, he replied, “I ain’t got it right now. I ain’t got it. And that was prop money. I ain’t got it.” He explained the video by noting, “I’m an entertainer and obviously, we talking about it, so I did a pretty good job at entertaining people… You know how you have a degree in law? I have a degree in entertainment.”

Be that as it may, he’ll need to find a way to turn that prop cash into the real thing if he wants to stay ahead of the repo man. Otherwise, he could end up in worse straits than the ones he found himself in when he was arrested for racketeering at the height of his success.

Lorde Turns In A Stripped-Down Cover Of The Strokes At Radio City Music Hall

A few days ago, Lorde had to postpone a couple of concerts due to laryngitis. After some rest, she came back strong, delivering a cover of Rosalía’s “Hentai” a few nights ago. She found herself at Radio City Music Hall last night and at the iconic NYC venue, she honored The Strokes, one of the city’s most iconic rock bands of the past couple decades.

She did so with a cover of “The End Has No End,” a single from the band’s 2003 sophomore album Room On Fire. Lorde went ahead and gave the song a new aesthetic, eschewing its rock sensibilities in favor of singing over a gentle guitar line.

The Rosalía cover went down at the same venue the night before, with both covers leading into a performance of Lorde’s own “Liability.” Lorde has another show set for Philadelphia’s Metropolitan Opera House tonight, so if Lorde covers are your jam, head to the venue in a few hours or keep an eye on social media for clips from the concert.

On a related note, Lorde was the one being covered recently when Glass Animals recorded a rendition of “Solar Power” for their Spotify Singles release.

We Haven’t Had A ‘God Of War: Ragnarok’ Update Is Because It’s ‘Not Ready To Be Shown’

It’s been awhile since we heard anything about the upcoming God of War: Ragnarok. A sequel to the 2018 hit God of War, we first learned about the development of Ragnarok during the reveal event for the PlayStation 5 in 2020. Since then, the game has been sparse for details, but we did get a new trailer back in September 2021 and we also know that it was originally slated to be released that same year before it got delayed into 2022.

Now, we’re deep into April, and information about the game has still remained infrequent. There was hope from fans that we would have gotten at least an official release date by now, but there’s been nothing and it looks like we might not be getting one for quite some time. In an update video posted by Sony Santa Monica where they celebrated the four year anniversary of God of War, developer and director of 2018’s God of War Cory Barlog told us why we have yet to get any major updates. To put it simply, it still isn’t ready to be shown off.

God of War: Ragnarok. The elephant in the room. We haven’t said a lot about this. That’s because everybody is heads-down. Hard at work. We are perfectionists. Everyone is tightening up the graphics (and) there is so much going on right now that I just wish we could share it with you. But it’s just not ready to be shown. But, I guarantee you the moment, the very second that we have something we’re ready to share, we’re going to share it. Because we don’t want to hold any of this back. So please, hold tight, know that something cool is coming and that we, everybody here at Sony Santa Monica, is so incredibly thankful for all the support you’ve given us.”

While this may feel like a non-update, it is at least to see an acknowledgment of everyone’s collective desire to know more about the status of Ragnarok. While there is a little bit of concern about another potential delay because we are so deep into 2022 and they aren’t ready to show us anything new from the game, it is good to see that they’re taking a ship it when it’s ready approach. Rushing out a demo or a clip from the game just so we can see a game that is still deep in development would honestly not be the best use of time for the devs working on the game.

This game is a big deal for everyone working on God of War because it is also the conclusion of its current story arc. While that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the franchise, it means they can’t allow the opportunity for any loose ends. So it makes sense they’re taking their time with this one.
