Shygirl Announces Her Debut Album, ‘Nymph’ And Reveals Her New Song, ‘Firefly’

UK experimental recording artist Shygirl has announced her debut album, Nymph, will arrive this fall. Ahead of Nymph‘s release, Shygirl has revealed the album’s lead single, “Firefly.”

On “Firefly,” Shygirl reflects on a love lost, accepting that the person wasn’t who they made themselves out to be.

“I guess I need to hear the truth this time / You kept me waiting on a lie / Waiting on a lie,” she sings over dreamy, hypnotic harpsichords.

Nymph will comprise of 12 songs, showcasing Shygirl’s ability to assert power and freedom and find liberation in her sexual desires. She will also tell stories of her relationships and detail her longing for love.

On the album, she has collaborated with Karma Kid, Mura Masa, Sega Bodega, and Cosha to lay the framework before bringing it to Los Angeles and seeking out producers Noah Goldstein, Danny L Harle, Bloodpop, Vegyn, and Kingdom to give Nymph its finishing touch.

“Every piece of work or project is like a sculpture to me,” said Shygirl in a statement. “Something made of marble that slowly reveals itself as I chip away… Something that was always there to begin with.”

How Signature Sneakers Have Evolved Over The Years

There are a number of ways to indicate whether or not someone has achieved the title of being a superstar. Whether it’s an on-court honor like an All-Star selection or an off-court status indicator like Instagram followers, there’s no one perfect way to determine whether or not a basketball player has earned that distinction.

In today’s Dime Breakdown, we decided to take a look at one of the best ways to identify a player who has transcended the game: signature sneakers. For decades, getting a signature line of kicks is a sure-fire way to indicate a player’s popularity goes beyond being someone who makes magic happen on the court.

We have to show love to Converse, whose Chuck Taylor All-Stars and Weapons became staples on the feet of the biggest stars in the game, before taking a look at how brands like Nike (and its offshoot inspired by that Michael Jordan guy), FILA, Adidas, and Reebok all have become synonymous with the athletes who wear them. Beyond that, we look at some of the names who are forever tied to sneaker culture, from Jordan, to Allen Iverson, to Shaq, to Kobe, to LeBron, and a whole lot of others in between.

‘Multiverse Of Madness’ Screenwriter Michael Waldron On All The Strange Spoilers

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness subverted expectations by, instead of trying to top the emotional meeting of three Spider-Mans in No Way Home, just pulling the rug out after a stoic introduction of characters like Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier. After years of speculation about the X-Men joining the MCU and rumors of John Krasinski being Reed Richards, or the introduction of Captain Carter – all these things finally happen and all of them were brutally murdered within minutes. It’s all very funny.

Screenwriter Michael Waldron – who previously wrote Loki and, next, will take on a yet-untitled Star Wars movie – knew there was a balance to hit. He wanted people to be surprised, but, at the same time, not … mad. There’s a fine line between subverting expectations and trolling, and Multiverse of Madness, hilariously, comes close to the second. But, as Waldron explains, with Sam Raimi directing, this is the way it should be, as opposed to something with more, say, “lore.”

Also, Waldron took delight in reading the rumor sites a Marvel kind of ran a disinformation campaign with its official marketing. And, yes, Waldron would have loved to have had Tom Cruise on board as Iron Man – it was discussed – but it was never really a possibility. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have future ideas for Cruise that also won’t happen.

The movie did gangbusters, but were you ever worried? Because it’s a weird movie and it’s following No Way Home

I don’t know. This is my first time. This is the first movie I’ve written, so this is my first time “watching the box office.” Like, “Oh, this is fun.” I mean, really, you just want people to like it. And it seems like people do, and people are seeing it if nothing else.

I think people got in their heads, “This is going to change everything. Here come the X-Men.” But then you pulled the rug out. What’s the balance of, “I kind of hope they think that a little bit. So it’s funny when they see the movie.” But at the same time they aren’t mad.

Right. Yeah. You want to subvert expectations, but you don’t want to make fun of the audience for going to see the movie. It doesn’t want to feel like a Tim and Eric thing too much.

But at the same time, I laughed out loud when John Kransinki gets turned into string cheese. Because everyone’s been asking that poor guy for two years if he’s going to be Reed Richards, and then he shows up and dies five minutes later. It’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.

Yeah. It’s amazing. Look, and I see it, I see it in the response, and I see it even in the audiences, the movie is so load-bearing in terms of expectations. There are people who come in with expectations because what they care about most is WandaVision. There’s people who come in with expectations, because what they care about most is Doctor Strange. There’s people there because they think it’s going to be like the next big step in the MCU mythology, like Captain America: Civil War.

But it’s interesting because it’s following No Way Home, which does combine all these beloved Spider-Man characters. And then this one does the opposite, just kind of pulls the rug out, where people were expecting it to go bigger.

Yeah, we couldn’t do the same thing. And I don’t think Sam had any interest in doing the same thing. That’s also Sam’s thing. And Sam isn’t necessarily who you’d want to make that movie. You want Sam to make the movie that feels subversive and rug pulling.

Where is the intersection between you and Sam Raimi in that? Do you write to his style? This movie even ends with the classic Raimi “everything is fine … no it’s not!” shot.

It was me trying to push him to be more like the Evil Dead Sam. I was even like, I want to do Quick and the Dead. Even down to trying to get an ear for that dialogue and stuff, just because I felt like it would feel like something kind of different in the MCU and it would feel cool. Sam, to his credit, wanted to make a great MCU movie for Kevin and everything. It’s like dead Strange is a great example, the zombie at the end, where I brought that idea to Sam. He’s like, “This is cool, but I don’t want to just do it just because I’m Sam Raimi and because everybody’s like, oh, he is doing the zombie.” It’s like, we’ve got to make sure that we’re not just playing it for laughs and that it really is like that we’re leaning into the fact that this is Strange breaking the rules again.” He didn’t want to just play the hits.

I get why he felt that way around the time of his Spider-Man movies. But I don’t think today he has to worry people think he can only do Evil Dead type movies.

Well, and I think you see that. I mean, what’s amazing is like when times get tough, people do default to what they do best. And it’s like, what Sam does best is the best camera work we’ve ever seen. And so it’s when we were under pressure is when the most inventive, craziest shit was going down in our movie, because that’s when Sam was in his sweet spot.

Whose idea was the Pizza Papa?

I think Bruce Campbell actually coined Pizza Papa. I think that was us on the day trying … it was just a lot of improv.

Was it always going to be a pizza guy?

It was always going to be a pizza guy. And it was always going to go down like that, but I think it was great.

Was that your idea, or was that Sam’s idea? The pizza guy?

That was my idea.

See, you should do the rug pulling with Star Wars, too. You should be like, “Fans, do you love Mr. Dash Rendar? Well, he’s back, played by Tom Cruise.” And then he dies within five minutes. I would laugh.

If I can get Tom Cruise as Dash Rendar, I’m fucking in. I’ll give him 10 minutes.

Speaking of Tom Cruise, did you enjoy reading the rumor sites about what was going to happen in Multiverse of Madness? There was that rumor Tom Cruise was going to play…

Iron Man.

That was like everywhere.

I mean, that had come up, for me and our producers to Kevin. Because, of course, we were talking about every near miss, like every “almost cast person.” And there was always that rumor way back in the day, before the MCU, that Tom Cruise was going to play Iron Man. But it was just never a possibility because he was shooting the new Mission: Impossible. But, of course, I was like, yeah, this would be great. I wish Tom Cruise was in this. I would be thrilled.

Well, now the stars aligned for Dash Rendar.

Exactly.

He’d be like, “Look, I can’t do two of these in a row.” But now, he’s Dash.

No good idea goes to waste. Instead of the iconic Iron Man, he plays the iconic Dash Rendar.

It almost feels like you guys put out a disinformation campaign on this movie.

Yes, totally. That’s a credit to marketing that they hid the ball on Wanda being the villain. And it’s like, yeah, I don’t know what you’d think if you didn’t know what was actually in the movie, who you expected the bad guy to be.

Like putting Patrick Stewart’s voice in the commercial. Because then it’s like, here we go. And then you see the movie and…

Dead.

‘EA Sports FC’ Will Be The New Name For The ‘FIFA’ Franchise Starting In 2023

For some time now, it’s been clear that the partnership between EA Sports and FIFA was going to be changing. For decades, EA Sports has released yearly soccer titles under the name EA Sports FIFA or “FIFA” for shorthand. However, back in October, EA announced that it was exploring changing the name of its yearly soccer franchise away from the FIFA branding. The reason for why this was going to happen ranged from differing viewpoints on how the future of the franchise should be handled as well as how much EA should be paying FIFA to use its name. As more information came out it became clear that a name change was more a matter of when rather than if.

On Tuesday, EA finally announced the new name for its soccer franchise as well as when we can expect that name to become the official title. Starting in July 2023, not too long after the release of FIFA 23, EA Sports will officially be using the name EA Sports FC for its soccer franchise. This means that FIFA 23 will be the final name in the franchise to use that title. EA Sports Cam Weber explained more in a press release.

Next year, EA SPORTS FC will become the future of football from EA SPORTS. Alongside our 300+ license partners across the sport, we’re ready to take global football experiences to new heights, on behalf of all football fans around the world.

EA SPORTS FC will allow us to realize this future and much more…but not before we deliver our most expansive game ever with our current naming rights partner, FIFA, for one more year. We are committed to ensuring the next FIFA is our best ever, with more features, game modes, World Cup content, clubs, leagues, competitions, and players than any FIFA title before.

For anyone that’s worried about what this means for the future of the franchise, the press release does include quotes from major leagues such as Premier League, La Liga, and UEFA to ensure fans that a new name shouldn’t mean less content for players. If all goes well for fans then this should be a rebrand and little else, but it does mean certain entities — like the World Cup — would be off limits for using the actual name if there’s a complete split with FIFA.

Wilco Drop ‘Tired Of Taking It Out On You’ And Announce A 2022 North American Tour

Wilco is on the verge of something big, in a literal sense: They recently announced a new album, Cruel Country, that sees them returning to their country roots across 21 tracks. Today, they’ve shared on of those songs, “Tired Of Taking It Out On You,” a pleasant, midtempo number with just the right amount of twang.

Jeff Tweedy says of the song:

“I’ve realized over the years that a lot of the songs I’ve written have worked as reminders to myself to pay attention to various things. Sometimes I think I’ve figured out how the world works in some small way, and I worry I’ll forget it if I don’t sing it back to myself occasionally. This song, I believe, is going to come in handy for just that purpose. I’m a person who needs to stay alert to how I’m treating others when I’m not feeling my best. And now that I mention it, when I look around, it seems like a lot of us have been taking things out on each other when we would be better served striving for understanding and empathy. I’m just trying to be honest with myself, and I guess I’m hoping if this song can help me focus on that, maybe someone else could find it useful in the same way.”

The band also announced a bunch of North American tour dates today, which run from mid-August to early October. Their Solid Sound Festival is also coming up, from May 27 to 29.

Eva Mendes Will Consider Ending Her Break From Acting, But She Won’t Do ‘Violence’ Or ‘Sexuality’

Eva Mendes had a stellar streak going there in the late 2000s, early 2010s. In a three-year span, she was in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (Werner Herzog and Nicolas Cage are a match made in nutty heaven), The Other Guys (an underrated highlight in the Will Ferrell canon), Fast Five (the best Fast and Furious movie), Holy Motors (a confounding masterpiece), and The Place Beyond the Pines (which also starred her future partner, Ryan Gosling). Also, she was in Hitch. Don’t forget Hitch.

But since 2013, Mendes has only been in one movie, Gosling’s directorial debut Lost River, and she’s barely appeared on television (shout out to the random episode of Bluey where she voiced “Yoga Instructor”).

Mendes will consider ending her decade-long hiatus, but only for the right project.

“I have such a short list of what I will do, with four kids,” the actress said on Tuesday’s episode of The View. “I mean, if it was a fun project. But now I won’t do violence, I don’t want to do sexuality, the list is short.”

When cohost Sunny Hostin asked Mendes if she’d return for a “special project” that fit all of her requirements, Mendes responded: “I hope so.”

[Whoopi] Goldberg ended Tuesday’s chat with Mendes by offering her another gig, with the Oscar-winning icon inviting her to come back to The View as a cohost in the near future.

Don’t do it, Eva. If you’re going to return to the entertainment industry for anything, make it Fast X or Fast XI — or Hitch 2. I hear Will Smith isn’t busy.

‘Percy Jackson’ Author Rick Riordan Has Blasted Trolls Who Whined About Leah Jeffries’ Casting: ‘This Is Racism’

Percy Jackson author Rick Riordan has come out swinging after learning that online trolls have been criticizing Leah Jeffries for being cast in the role of Annabeth Chase in the new Disney+ series based on the wildly popular books. Jeffries previously Instagrammed a screencap of Variety‘s exclusive article on the casting announcement.

Jeffries’ casting was announced last week following the announcement that The Adam Project star, Walker Scobell, will take over the Percy Jackson role, which was previously played by Logan Lerman in the films that failed to take off as a franchise.

Here’s how Variety described Annabeth:

Annabeth is a true daughter of the Greek goddess, Athena. She is a brilliant strategist with an active and curious mind. After having spent the last five years at Camp Half-Blood, she longs to test her mettle in the human world, of which she barely remembers. She trains Percy to survive the mythological world, and in turn, he helps her connect with her humanity.

In the Percy Jackson films, Annabeth was played by Alexandra Daddario. In the new series coming to Disney+, Riordan, who authored the beloved book series, has more creative control this time around, and he wrote a lengthy post on his official website defending Jeffries’ casting, which he says was his decision.

“If you have a problem with this casting, however, take it up with me,” Riordan writes. “You have no one else to blame. Whatever else you take from this post, we should be able to agree that bullying and harassing a child online is inexcusably wrong. As strong as Leah is, as much as we have discussed the potential for this kind of reaction and the intense pressure this role will bring, the negative comments she has received online are out of line. They need to stop. Now.”

Riordan also reiterated that he was “quite clear a year ago” when he first announced the series that “we would be following Disney’s company policy on nondiscrimination.” The author did not pull his punches about the negative reactions to Jeffries’ casting, which he said they prepared for behind the scenes.

“You are judging her appropriateness for this role solely and exclusively on how she looks. She is a Black girl playing someone who was described in the books as white,” Riordan writes. “Friends, that is racism.”

Apple Finally Discontinues The iPod Line More Than 20 Years After Introducing It

It’s the end of an era for an iconic line of Apple devices: Today, Apple announced they will no longer manufacture its only remaining model of iPod, as reported by Variety.

Although Apple had ceased the manufacturing of the iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano back in 2017, the iPod Touch, which was first introduced in 2007, was announced to be discontinued today. The last of the iPod Touch models are available for purchase online.

When the original iPod was first introduced in October 2001, it was a different kind of audio file player — one that could play over 1,000 songs. Since its conception, various versions of the iPod have been manufactured, including the iPod Nano, a smaller version of the classic model which later evolved to play video, as well as the touchscreen multi-use iPod Touch, and the screenless iPod Shuffle.

U2 even had a red and black edition of the classic model, and commercials for the iPod popularized songs like Feist‘s “1,2,3,4” and Caesars’ “Jerk It Out.

“Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impacted more than just the music industry — it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to and shared,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s SVP of worldwide marketing, in a statement.

Jack Harlow Celebrates His Success With A Feisty Funx Flex Freestyle

Jack Harlow is having a hell of a run. Today, he capped off the successful release of his new album Come Home The Kids Miss You with a feisty Funk Flex freestyle addressing both his come-up and the criticism that came with it. Having already tapped the great Pharrell Williams to produce on his new album, Jack gets it in over one of Pharrell’s own hits: “Can I Have It Like That” from The Neptunes member’s 2006 solo debut album In My Mind.

Among the standout lines in the freestyle are references to Harlow’s upcoming film debut in the remake of White Men Can’t Jump and the complaints that he’s had too easy a ride in the last two years. “My success got some people’s stomachs turning,” he sneers. “Saying I’m just white and I got lucky, I ain’t earn it / Like I’m just a plant and all this sh*t was predetermined.” He attributes this to reminding his critics of “the kids that bullied them.” It’s a much more combative verse than we’re used to hearing from the normally affable jokester, but it looks like he’s starting to come into his confidence thanks to the enthusiastic reception to his latest.

You can watch Jack Harlow’s Funk Flex freestyle above.

Mia Khalifa Explains Why TikTok (And OnlyFans) Is More ‘Safe And Fun’ Than Instagram

Mia Khalifa was on PornHub for all of two months before she became the website’s “No. 1 ranked performer.” The exposure (and a video where she wore a hijab) led to death threats, and less than a year after filming her first video, she left the pornography industry to attempt a less-notorious life. But “attempts to take cover in conventional jobs like bookkeeper and paralegal were doomed,” Bustle‘s Charlotte Shane wrote in a profile. “Though she cut and dyed her long, dark hair, co-workers and clients alike made it clear that they’d seen her on their screens. She says their behavior was so disruptive that one employer, a construction firm, stopped letting customers into the office.”

Khalifa eventually found a home on social media, where she could control her own content. She has 28 million followers on Instagram and 32 million on TikTok (putting her in the top 50 most-followed accounts), although she prefers one over the other.

“My Instagram is maybe 25 percent women, but TikTok is in the mid-40s,” Khalifa said. “That’s why it’s such a safe and fun platform for me. There are videos where my entire comments section is just women, and I can sit in there and go back and forth with them.“

Her TikTok followers also inspired her to start an OnlyFans.

“I had written it off for so long because I was insecure,” she says, about its affiliation with X-rated content. But once there, she found that the platform helped her understand the “difference between ethical and unethical ways to consume porn,” as she put it.

Khalifa, who was in a season two episode of Ramy, will soon appear on Showtime’s Ziwe, where she’ll discuss “the anomaly of empowerment” with host Ziwe and fellow guest Emily Ratajkowski. You can read the Bustle profile here.
