Arby’s Dropped Its First Ever Cheeseburger — So Is It Any Good?

For all its talk about having “the meats,” it’s weird that Arby’s hasn’t ever had a burger on the menu. It’s not that Arby’s needs a burger, but the chain does roasted turkey sandwiches, fried chicken sandwiches, corned beef sandwiches, and roast beef sandwiches, so not having a burger on the menu feels like a miss. Especially when you consider that Arby’s has two different salads on the menu. A salad before a burger? That goes against Arby’s whole meathead ethos!

Well, carnivores, get ready. Because on Monday the chain finally unveiled its first cheeseburger and in typical Arby’s fashion they went big. This isn’t a simple quarter-pound cheeseburger, it’s a 6.4 oz (slightly more than 1/3 pound) meat bomb of Wagyu and ground beef.

The Wagyu Steakhouse Burger features a single patty made from 52% American Wagyu and 42% ground beef (more on this later!) topped with thick crinkle cut pickles, red onion, American cheese, shredded lettuce, tomato, and a double dose of special sauce served on a brioche bun. Arby’s is calling it the “highest quality burger the market has seen.” To which we say: we’ll be the judge of that!

Quality aside, dropping a Wagyu burger suggests some big flavors — so we’re excited to find out if Arby’s can actually deliver. Let’s eat.

Arby’s Wagyu Steakhouse Burger

One of the first things that jumps out when you unwrap this burger is the smell — it’s noticeably beefy with an intoxicating and mouthwatering aroma that excites the taste buds before you even take your first bite. And goddamn does that first bite deliver! It’s tender and juicy with that melt-in-your-mouth buttery finish that Wagyu is famous for.

The Wagyu in question is not the ultra-marbled high-fat Japanese Wagyu (if it were, this burger would not be $5.99), it’s instead made with what is known as American Wagyu, which is made from Japanese Wagyu crossed with high-quality cattle breeds from North America. American Wagyu is… still pretty good. It’s definitely more elevated than your typical ground beef blend, but having said that, it’s not really even in the ballpark of Japanese Wagyu, flavor-wise, and it doesn’t have that same luxurious marbling and sumptuous fat-infused tenderness that makes Japanese Wagyu so special.

Proper Wagyu goes through a strict and official rating process conducted by the Japanese Meat Grading Association that assigns a score for factors that include the meat’s marbling, color, fat content, firmness, texture, and yield, with the highest score being A5. It’s a fascinating practice and one that is entirely absent from Arby’s press info about this burger because. It’s. Not. Actually. Wagyu.

But we digress.

Also, as I mentioned before, this is only 52% American Wagyu, so calling this burger a “Wagyu burger” comes with a big f*cking asterisk. That might seem overly harsh towards Arby’s, but I’m not the one who decided to call this thing the “Wagyu Steakhouse Burger.” But we’re probably never going to get proper Wagyu in a fast food burger (it’s a waste of Wagyu anyway), ever, so we’ll take this, because naming aside, it’s pretty solid.

Arby’s claims that they cook this beef Sous Vide to better lock in juices, and while it is noticeably juicer than burgers from other chains like Wendy’s and McDonald’s, that slightly pink center we expect from Sous Vide isn’t quite there. Our cross-section cut shows some slight pinkness but, as is common with fast food burgers, this is still a bit overdone and drier than I want it to be. Aside from that small gripe, it does pack a lot of tender buttery flavor, serving up rich and savory umami notes with a slight lingering sweetness to the aftertaste.

Those flavors are intensified by the special sauce, which provides a slightly spicy tang to the beefy notes and pairs well with the earthy pickles and sharp, bitingly fresh red onion. Arby’s also gives you the option to swap the sauce with its famous peppercorn ranch sauce, as well as add bacon. I haven’t tried that version yet, but I’ll take any excuse to eat this thing again!

Arby’s first stab at a burger is, by all measures, a success. It’s delicious, juicy, and beefier than the competition, while still offering something that tastes unique and uniquely Arby’s. It’ll be interesting to see where this burger lands on our comprehensive fast food burger ranking. As it stands though this is one of the best new fast food menu items we’ve tasted all year.

The Bottom Line:

It doesn’t taste like a typical fast food burger, it has an elevated quality to it, putting it more in line with a $16 restaurant burger than other great fast food burgers, like the Wendy’s Dave Single.

Ganser Holds A Burial For Their Vocalist In Their New ‘People Watching’ Video

Ahead of their upcoming EP, Nothing You Do Matters, Chicago band Ganser is taking their music videos to the next level. In their latest video, “People Watching,” the band utilize an LED Volume backdrop to create an immersive effect.

An LED Volume backdrop is a set-up of high-resolution screens that can respond in real-time to camera movement. This type of technology is used in on series like The Mandalorian.

In the video, the band is seen burying their vocalist, Nadia Garofalo, alive. Snow and cornstalks in the background add an ominous feel. Ganser spoke about the creation of the “People Watching” video, which was shot over a two-day period, to Rolling Stone.

“It’s kind of nice to be like, ‘OK, we’re shooting it in the cold winter — but we don’t have to actually go out and dig a hole in the ground and be outside for 10 hours,’ ” said Garofalo. “Saving crews from elements is cool, too.”

“I was being shot from the waist down,” co-vocalist Alicia Gaines added. “So I was burying Nadia in fake soil and looking at the monitor on one side, checking her lip-sync. This was our most difficult video to make.”

The upcoming EP was produced by Angus Andrew of Liars.

50-years ago they trade a grilled cheese for a painting. Now it’s worth a small fortune.

The grilled cheese at Irene and Tony Demas’ restaurant was truly something special. The combination of freshly baked artisan bread and 5-year-old cheddar was enough to make anyone’s mouth water, but no one was nearly as devoted to the item as the restaurant’s regular, John Kinnear.

Kinnear loved the London, Ontario restaurant’s grilled cheese so much that he ordered it every single day, though he wouldn’t always pay for it in cash. The Demases were well known for bartering their food in exchange for odds and ends from local craftspeople and merchants.

“Everyone supported everyone back then,” Irene told the Guardian, saying that the couple would often trade free soup and a sandwich for fresh flowers. Two different kinds of nourishment, you might say.

And so, in the 1970s the Demases made a deal with Kinnear that he could pay them for his grilled cheese sandwiches with artwork. Being a painter himself and part of an art community, Kinnear would never run out of that currency.

Little did Kinnear—or anyone—know, eventually he would give the Demases a painting worth an entire lifetime’s supply of grilled cheeses. And then some.

One day, Kinnear brought in some works from a friend by the name of Maud Lewis. Despite living in abject poverty and suffering from challenging health conditions, Lewis would create colorful, cheerful paintings using whatever materials she could get access to, be that leftover paint used for boats or discarded wooden boards.

According to Good News Network, Kinnear and Lewis had made their own trade: some painting supplies in exchange for a few of her pieces, which were brought to the restaurant.

One painting in particular struck the then-pregnant Irene in a profound way—a cheery image of an old black pickup truck cruising through a neighborhood, complete with a bright yellow house with a flower-lined yard.

Because of the pure innocence expressed in the piece, Irene thought a child might have created it. She told the Guardian, “I just sat there in silence for quite a while. I’d never ever seen any art like that before. At first I thought they might be playing some sort of trick on me.”

Nevertheless, Irene selected the work and hung it in her expected son’s bedroom, where it remained for 50 years.

As an artist, Lewis never reached acclaim while she was alive, but over the years her art has made its way into the spotlight and there was even a romantic biopic made about her, starring Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke.

The movie caused Lewis’ work to “double and triple in value” according to Ethan Miller, chief executive officer and auctioneer at Miller & Miller Auctions in New Hamburg, Ontario, who noted that the truck painting in particular was a rare piece.

Soon, the Demases realized that they owned the work of a now-famous painter and they put the work up for sale. It was subsequently auctioned off for $350,000. The letters written between Kinnear and Lewis—also sold at auction—were bought for $70,000. Not bad for free grilled cheese.

Not only do the Demases have an exciting new chapter of possibilities in their lives, but an artist has received long overdue recognition. Talk about a win-win situation.

DDG Breaks Down The Meaning Behind ‘Elon Musk’ In ‘Behind The Video’

After Uproxx Studios’ How I Blew Up returned earlier this week to track the rise of Sonny Digital from bedroom beatmaker to in-demand, pioneering producer, Behind The Video also returns to highlight DDG’s video for “Elon Musk” featuring Gunna. Uproxx’s Steven Vasquez gets the scoop from DDG on the video’s concept and creation. In the video, DDG and Gunna break atmosphere to explore outer space, much like the song’s namesake has planned to do with his SpaceX company.

As usual, there are a few fan comments for DDG to reply to as well. When one says that “everything DDG did he spoke into existence,” DDG agrees, “That’s the only way you can make stuff come true. If you truly believe in yourself, you gotta manifest it. You’ve gotta give yourself a goal that you know you’re gonna reach.” He also recounted how he got higher than he’d ever been by underestimating a weed gummy and explained how Gunna went from being a work acquaintance to a genuine friend. “The whole hook I freestyled,” DDG brags. “I just went down a rabbit hole of Elon Musk and SpaceX and it just inspired the thought.”

Jalen Rose Was The Voter That Had Kyrie Irving On His All-NBA Third Team

The 2022 All-NBA teams were revealed on Tuesday night prior to Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals, and there weren’t a ton of surprises among those to actually earn the 15 All-NBA spots. Joel Embiid landing on the second team produced some chatter, as the likes of Jayson Tatum and others pointed out that the league should get rid of positions on the All-NBA ballot so the MVP runner-up doesn’t end up as a second team player.

Still, overall there weren’t a ton of gripes, but when the full voting results were released we did get our annual look at some of the wild one-off votes that inevitably happen. There was a Desmond Bane third team selection that was fairly shocking from Frank Isola, but no third team selection came from further off the board than Kyrie Irving getting a slot on Jalen Rose’s ballot. Irving, of course, played in just 29 games this season by choice, as he refused to get the COVID-19 vaccine, which precluded him from playing in home games in Brooklyn for the majority of the season (and initially was not allowed to play at all as the Nets began the year with a “no part-time player” policy that they dropped midway through the year).

Considering the robust field of guard for All-NBA this season, Irving wasn’t even in consideration for 99 voters, but Rose decided to put him above Trae Young (who it should be noted had better production across 76 games played this season) and the rest for a bizarre third team selection. Ultimately it doesn’t matter as it didn’t keep Young from earning an All-NBA nod but it’s a pretty wild selection that is hard to figure out a defense of.

Jayson Tatum Thinks Joel Embiid Making The All-NBA Second Team ‘Doesn’t Really Make Too Much Sense’

On Tuesday, for the first time in his career, Jayson Tatum was named to the All-NBA First Team. The fifth-year forward is putting together a stellar campaign and led his Boston Celtics to the Eastern Conference’s No. 2 seed during the regular season.

Joining Tatum on that squad were Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic, and Devin Booker. Absent from the team was Joel Embiid, who finished runner-up to Jokic in MVP voting for the second consecutive season. Despite back-to-back appearances as an MVP finalist, Embiid has been named to the All-NBA Second Team each year.

Embiid garnered more First Team votes than Tatum, yet Tatum earned more at forward, while Jokic earned more at center. As a result, Tatum eclipsed him for a First Team Spot. With the MVP runner-up being a Second Team honoree the past two seasons, discussions about eliminating positions from the All-NBA criteria has swelled. Tatum weighed in on the conversation Wednesday.

“I do think it should be positionless,” Tatum said. “Joel Embiid was second in MVP voting and he made second team? It doesn’t really make too much sense.”

Tatum also advocated for a minimum number of games played to be eligible for All-NBA selections, as well as a potential requirement that players must make the playoffs. I certainly agree with his stance on the positionless debate and can support a minimum number of games threshold.

However, the playoffs are a team accomplishment and punishing individual players for being on non-postseason clubs feels faulty, especially as long as contract incentives are tied to these awards. To Tatum’s credit, though, he has criticized these votes impacting contract earnings, so he’d surely amend it if given the chance to add these stipulations.

Nonetheless, it’s welcomed to hear a prominent superstar address the flaws in All-NBA voting. Hopefully, this can help spur some change and ensure the best players of each season, independent of positions, are recognized moving forward.

AOC Went HAM On Lauren Boebert Over Her Pro-Gun Tweet After The Texas School Shooting

Everyone’s still reeling from yet another mass shooting, this time at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas but the only thing that can make this situation feel even more helpless is hearing politicians claim they have absolutely no power to change things.

That would apply to Congresswoman Lauren Boebert here, who took to Twitter to weigh in on the tragedy at Robb Elementary School. Currently, the death toll has risen to include 19 children and two adults. That figure is shocking and heartbreaking, mostly because those deaths could’ve been prevented with stricter gun laws, but don’t’ tell that Boebert and her fellow NRA groupies. On Wednesday morning, the Republican representative tweeted this a hollow sentiment in response to calls for gun legislation:

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is doing the work of telling Boebert and the rest of her “pro-life” set to shut up.

“Why even be in Congress if you don’t believe in doing your job?” AOC questioned in response to Boebert’s tweet. “Just quit and let someone who actually gives a damn do it instead of acting like a useless piece of furniture when babies are shot with AR15s that we let teen boys impulse buy before they can legally have a beer.”

It’s a good question, and Boebert has yet to respond.

Mura Masa Announces A New Album, ‘Demon Time,’ And Shares A Bouncy Single, ‘Blessing Me’

Over the past few years, Mura Masa (real name Alex Crossan) has established himself as an artist people want to work with; His list of collaborators includes Charli XCX, ASAP Rocky, Clairo, Damon Albarn, and so many others. That’s thanks largely to the strength of his two album, 2017’s self-titled debut and 2020’s RYC. Now, he’s continuing to build momentum by announcing a new album, Demon Time.

That’s set for release on September 16, but ahead of then, he dropped a new single, “Blessing Me,” a bouncy tune that features Pa Salieu and Skilliben.

Press materials note that when making the album, Crossan had one question in mind: “What’s the most fun thing we can do?” The “we” references the collaborators who helped him make the album, a list that includes Shygirl, Channel Tres, Erika De Casier, Nao, Bayli, Isabella Lovestory, and others. A press release also notes of Crossan’s approach to Demon Time, “For previous albums, Crossan busied himself compiling documents of musical references, moodboards, and various thoughts and ideas to steer his creation process. This time, he was inspired by a note on his phone that just said one word in capital letters: FUN.

Crossan also says of the album title, “It’s devil on the shoulder type fun. Not necessarily the most wholesome, but it’s a really good time.”

‘Squid Game’ Breakout Jung Ho-yeon Thought She ‘F*cked Up’ When She First Watched The Show

Before Squid Game became one of the most popular streaming shows in 2021, breakout star Jung Ho-yeon was afraid that she actually ruined the show. The model-turned-actress landed the her first-ever acting role on the massively popular (and massively violent) series, which earned her critical acclaim and several award nominations. But after she watched herself on screen for the first time, Jung actually apologized to the director for her performance.

In a new roundtable interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Jung is accompanied by other iconic women of Hollywood, Sandra Oh, Emmy Rossum, Rosario Dawson, Lily James and Christina Ricci, who reflect on their triumphant roles from the last year. The Squid Game star, who played the resilient Kang Sae-byeok, recalls that she was not confident about her character and her acting skills after watching the final cut.

JUNG We watched Squid Game before it came out. The actors did because we had to do promotion and events and stuff, and I thought … am I allowed to swear?
OH Yeah.
JUNG I thought I f*cked up.
JAMES Oh my God, you’re great.
JUNG I thought I totally messed up. My first message to director Hwang after I watched Squid Game was, “I am so sorry. And thank you so much for casting me.” I’m going to cry. It was so stressful. I was trying to prepare for the bad reactions and everything.

Jung then got emotional describing her anxiety and life after the show. “I’m reading a lot of scripts and just starting to educate myself. Like, do you want to tell people about this woman’s life? Or this woman’s life? And then the other side, I’m thinking, ‘I just want to try everything so that I can have more of a sense of what I like, what I want to do.’”

The actress added, “But for now, I just have to keep going even though I make mistakes. Even though I just cried right now. I don’t even know why I cried, but I just have to fight with my anxiety and keep learning and trying.”

Now, Jung has a SAG award and worldwide praise, so she can coast for a little while. Next up, she is set to star in A24’s The Governesses, and an upcoming Apple TV series Disclaimer alongside Cate Blanchett. Most importantly, though, she starred in a music video for The Weeknd earlier this year, which is the mark of a true superstar. Just ask Jim Carrey!

Harry Styles Sang Part Of Taylor Swift’s ’22’ To A Fan On Their Birthday

Following last week’s release of Harry’s House, Harry Styles is gearing up to take the proverbial show on the road. Styles’ Love On Tour begins in Europe in June before descending upon famed American arena-sized venues beginning in August, like his upcoming 15-night run at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, five nights at Chicago’s United Center and Austin’s Moody Center, followed by the grand finale 15-night run at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Before this eye-popping run of shows begins (15 nights in NY and LA is some serious stuff!), Styles played two comparatively intimate “One Night Only” shows in New York, and last night in London at the 5,000 person capacity 02 Brixton Academy. He played Harry’s House front to back, before sprinkling in hits like “Watermelon Sugar,” of course. But it was a special birthday song to a fan that might’ve been the most pleasant surprise of the night.

Styles notices that a fan near the front is celebrating a birthday and asks them how old they’re turning. They respond “22,” to which Styles almost instantly breaks out into the a song dance to the chorus of Taylor Swift’s “22.” The crowd went wild and the brief pop music clash of titans moment was captured by a fan at the show. Your moment of zen is below.
