Report: The Jazz Will Interview Sixers Assistant Sam Cassell For Their Head Coaching Job

As the Utah Jazz’s search for a new head coach rages on, another name has entered the ring in Sam Cassell, according to Shams Charania and Tony Jones of The Athletic. Earlier this month, Quin Snyder resigned after eight seasons as the Jazz’s head coach.

Cassell recently wrapped up his second season as an assistant for the Philadelphia 76ers alongside head coach Doc Rivers. He’s spent 13 seasons as an NBA assistant, beginning with the Washington Wizards from 2009-14, before joining Rivers as a member of the Los Angeles Clippers from 2014-20.

Previously, Cassell has been linked to head coaching vacancies in Boston (2021) and Washington (2021). He’s revered for his work developing young, talented guards, which Utah certainly rosters in the form of the 25-year-old All-Star Donovan Mitchell. Of course, Sixers speedster Tyrese Maxey also qualifies and he experienced a tremendous second season with Cassell on the sidelines.

Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Cassell played 14 seasons in the NBA, where he won three titles and was named to one All-Star and All-NBA team. His best year came with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2003-04, when he earned both of those honors. He helped power them to the Western Conference Finals, as MVP Kevin Garnett led the way.

Ron DeSantis Welcomes Support From Well-Known ‘African-American’… Sigh… Elon Musk

The Elon Musk and Republican love fest continues. The Tesla CEO proudly announced that he voted for his first Republican during a Texas special election, and he’s already hinting that Ron DeSantis has his backing should he become the GOP nominee for the 2024 presidential election. Given Musk’s rabid fanbase and massive social media following, the Florida Governor was quick to latch on to Musk’s support during a press conference on Wednesday morning.

After announcing the reinstatement of the Florida State Guard, DeSantis fielded questions from reporters, which included his thoughts on Musk tweeting that he’s “leaning” towards the governor for president. In true Republican fashion, DeSantis couldn’t help but make things awkwardly racist.

“I’m focused on 2022, but with Elon Musk, what I would say is, you know, I welcome support from African-Americans,” DeSantis joked, earning laughter from the crowd.

Technically, Musk is from South Africa, but c’mon. Horrible jokes aside, DeSantis marks the second Republican within a matter of hours who has openly embraced support from the embattled Tesla CEO. After winning the special election in Texas, Mayra Flores made it a point to specifically thank Musk for helping her flip a Democratic congressional seat.

“I woke up this morning still feeling surreal from everything that’s happened over the last 24 hours,” Flores tweeted. “Earning Elon Musk’s vote was just the icing on the cake and I can’t wait to work with his team! The American Dream is worth fighting for.”

Of course, the big question is will Musk back Donald Trump should he follow through on his plans to run for president in 2024. Despite the ongoing January 6 hearings, Trump is still the front runner should he enter the GOP primary. If Trump doesn’t run, DeSantis is more than likely the candidate going into 2024. Otherwise, the Florida governor has a fight on his hands that he might not win even with Musk’s support.

‘Jackass’ Star Bam Margera Is Reportedly Missing After Leaving A Rehab Center Without Approval

Long-time Jackass member Bam Margera was fired from Jackass Forever after he “essentially broke his contract,” TMZ reported at the time. “We’re told the Jackass family wanted Bam to be part of the movie from the get-go, but were worried things would go left because of his past substance use and erratic behavior.” Since then, the movie’s director, Jeff Tremaine, was granted a restraining order from Margera over alleged death threats. Margera also filed a lawsuit for wrongful termination, which Paramount Pictures claimed was riddled with “outright lies”; the lawsuit was later dropped.

The story took another sad turn on Monday, when TMZ reported that Margera has gone missing from a rehab facility in Florida.

According to a Delray Beach police report, the rehab facility’s manager reported the ‘Jackass’ star missing on Monday. The manager says Bam told him he was unhappy with the place and their services… so he was splitting, which he apparently did.

The report notes Bam told the manager that instead of staying there, he’d be checking himself into a different rehab center in the area… and then left the premises in a black sedan. According to the manager, Bam was there under a court order, and the staff was concerned he seemed to be leaving without authorization.

Margera, who completed a 12-month treatment program for drug and alcohol abuse last month, hasn’t been heard from since he shared a photo on his Instagram page (“MMA fighter, chiropractor and ten years sober Dominick, is my new AA sponsor,” it reads) and posted a selfie with his wife, Nicole Boyd, and Machine Gun Kelly, to his Stories.

Sylvester Stallone Is A Mafia Boss Totally Out Of His Element In The First ‘Tulsa King’ Trailer

Along with being the hometown of Barry star Bill Hader, Tulsa’s becoming a bit of a pop culture focus these days. HBO’s Watchmen and an episode of Lovecraft Country paid tribute in their own ways (regarding the Tulsa Race Massacre), and Reservation Dogs shot nearby in Muskogee and moved into Tulsa proper to shoot parts of the second season. As well, Sylvester Stallone recently dropped into town to shoot scenes for Paramount+’s Tulsa King, another sure-to-be-popular show from the mind of Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan.

As seen in the above trailer, Sly portrays a mob capo (Dwight “The General” Manfred) who’s relegated to Oklahoma for… reasons. He’s seen downtown near the Boston Avenue Methodist Church and partaking from a tiny cup. It’s a little trippy to see the Rocky, Rambo, and The Expendables star out of his (expected) element, but that’s also in line with what his character’s experiencing as well.

Tulsa King Sylvester Stallone Trailer
Paramount+

Previously, Sheridan explained explained how Stallone’s capo “took the fall for the bosses and went to prison for 25 years, kept his mouth shut, and now he comes out.” He’s then shipped off to Tulsa “to now start a new life, create a gang. They want him to be an earner. That’s when the fun begins.” Hopefully, Dwight can avoid the tornadoes and frequently raging humidity in the process.

Tulsa King co-stars Vincent Piazza (Boardwalk Empire) and Domenick Lombardozzi (The Irishman), along with Garrett Hedlund, Andrea Savage, Martin Starr, Max Casella, Jay Will, and A.C. Peterson. This show will, very clearly, be outside the Yellowstone universe proper, and the same will go for Billy Bob Thornton in Land Man and Zoe Saldana in Lioness, also forthcoming from Sheridan. No release dates yet, but people will be waiting.

Michael Peterson Is Annoyed It Was ‘Dull As Dirt’ Colin Firth Who Portrayed Him On ‘The Staircase’ Instead Of, Say, Brad Pitt

Being portrayed by a big-named actor can be hard, especially when the subject is as dark as a murder investigation, as it was with Michael Peterson. Peterson is portrayed by Colin Firth in the HBO drama The Staircase, which is a fictionalized look at the very real death of Peterson’s wife, Kathleen. As it turns out, the real Peterson is not too happy with Firth’s portrayal.

In a new interview with Variety, Peterson admitted that he didn’t watch the series, saying, “There was this two-and-a-half-minute trailer and I turned it off after one minute because there are my children screaming at each other. And I said, ‘What family is this? Where did this come from?’ So, I did not watch anymore.”

Though he didn’t watch, he did have some words for Firth. When Variety asked if Firth reached out to Peterson for research, Peterson responded:

No, he did not. That was his choice. Whether I would talk to him? I probably would have. I will forever be known as Colin Firth. It could be worse, I suppose. He’s not my favorite actor. Get Brad Pitt! But to be fair, I haven’t seen his portrayal, but I heard he got [my] voice right and [my] mannerisms. But he didn’t capture my energy or my humor. To me, Colin’s a great actor but I can’t think of any roles that weren’t dull as dirt that he’s ever played and that’s fine. I’m not denigrating him, but I would have thought about talking to him. He said he wanted to do it himself — make his own creature, I thought, “What are you talking about? I’m the real person. If you want to know what I think and feel, read my book or talk to me.

This is absurd since there are so many great, non-dull performances by Firth, who famously starred alongside Amanda Bynes in 2003’s coming-of-age tale What A Girl Wants. But to be fair, it must be hard seeing someone so British playing yourself on screen.

While Peterson says he expected the drama surrounding him, he is more concerned with his family, who have been in the spotlight for decades since the fatal incident. Peterson was eventually found guilty, though there were many theories that led both family friends and true crime fans to believe there was more to the store, including the Owl Theory, which Peterson now says is “very conceivable.”

When [a neighbor] Larry told me about an owl, I thought, “What in the world?” But then he sent the pictures of the autopsy with the owl talons superimposed over and I thought, “‘Oh my god.’ It’s a real possibility,” Peterson admitted. “It’s a real probability that Kathleen went and put those [Christmas decorations] outside right before she went to bed. She thinks, ‘Let me just go put them out.’ So, she runs out. She puts them up and then maybe an owl attacks her. Very conceivable.”

We will never know.

Read This If You Want To Understand What ‘Lightyear’ Is Actually About

In the year and a half since Chris Evans (who voices Buzz Lightyear in Lightyear) tweeted his explanation of what Lightyear even is, there’s been, say, some confusion. To the point, I don’t even want to link to Evans’s tweet because the purpose of what you’re reading now is to explain exactly what this movie is by talking to both the director, Angus MacLane, and producer, Galyn Susman. Now, what’s interesting is how Lightyear starts, with a simple, three-sentence explanation.

“In 1995 Andy got a toy. That toy is from his favorite movie. This is that movie.”

According to MacLane, it was Andrew Stanton (who co-wrote Toy Story and directed WALL-E) who was adamant THAT the explanation had to be simple and to the point. This was correct. At my media screening, this explanation got applause.

In Lightyear, Buzz Lightyear is a Space Ranger who finds himself, with the rest of his crew, marooned on a far away planet. Every time Buzz tests the hyperspeed, it sends him a few years into the future. So every time he returns to the planet after a failed attempt, everyone he knows has aged, though Buzz has not. But Buzz is determined to get everyone back home, even though a good number of the crew have had full lives on this new planet. Buzz is also joined by Sox, a robot cat and what is sure to be the breakout star of this movie.

Now, that’s not to say there’s not more to get into the weeds about. Like, for instance, does that mean Lightyear came out in 1995? Well, MacLane says it came out in 1986. And by the time Andy got his Buzz Lightyear toy, it was more how in real life there were The Real Ghostbusters toys based off the animated series, not the original movie Ghostbusters. Anyway, yes, ahead, we got into the weeds quite a bit, culminating with the influences that properties like Aliens, G.I. Joe (the toys, not the cartoon), and even The Black Hole influenced Lightyear.

Warning, this all gets pretty dorky:

At my media screening the opening three sentences, “In 1995 Andy got a toy. The toy is based on a movie. This is that movie,” got applause.

Angus MacLane: Oh yeah. All right. That’s great to hear. Oh, that’s wonderful.

I could almost hear you sighing during those three sentences, like, okay, one last time.

Angus MacLane: There was a lot of concern that you just hadn’t been able to communicate what this was. Fast forward to today, where we’ve gotten questions about whether or not it’s animation or live-action in Andy’s world. And if so, who are the actors that portrayed Buzz and who was the key grip? So the people are excited about the backstory. I’m glad that cleared things up.

Well, now that you brought it up, I guess there would be an actor, right? An actor is playing Buzz Lightyear in the movie that Andy likes. Right?

Angus MacLane: I guess, but I’ll level with you, we just said that so we could just make a cool sci-fi movie. We didn’t really spend a lot of time digging into the Wikipedia of things not appearing in the film. But know that we did treat it with respect to make it something that was legitimate and awesome and not try to expand the world without diminishing from it.

Did you have a conference with other people to come up with that very simple three-sentence explanation that really clears up the premise?

Angus MacLane: There’s a great story with that. Andrew Stanton wrote that. He was just like, “No, no, no. Here, I’ll boil it down to three sentences.” Because there was some confusion about how are we going to set this up? And he’s like, “No, three sentences.” And it’s helpful to have such an exceptional writer as your executive producer, because he was able to just boil it down. And that’s how we went with that. The wording is really clean.

I know I’m getting in the weeds a bit but you just said you just wanted to make a cool sci-fi movie. But is it supposed to be a sci-fi movie from the lens of 1995?

Angus MacLane: Well, okay. I don’t want to pull out the nerd card. Actually, technically, Andy received Buzz Lightyear in 1995. The movie is not specified as from 1995. The movie I imagine is actually from 1986, maybe 1985. So it’s a little earlier. He saw the movie on VHS a lot. And then after that movie, maybe there were other movies, but then there was a TV show. Like Ghostbusters. You know? Then The Real Ghostbusters. And then The Real Ghostbusters had their own toy line with Kenner.

I had those, yes.

Angus MacLane: Andy’s Buzz Lightyear is from The Real Ghostbusters. But that’s even harder to say at the beginning of the film. Luckily, we have our 15 minutes, so I can get into the weeds with you. But if you really want to know…

I do.

Angus MacLane: That’s the lineage. It’s like Droids or Ewoks to Return of the Jedi. It’s like a little different.

So Tim Allen is the Lorenzo Music of Buzz Lightyear? Because Lorenzo Music did the Peter Venkman voice. And then I believe he was replaced by Dave Coulier in the third season…

Angus MacLane: In subsequent seasons. But Lorenzo Music is perhaps most famous for what?

Well, Garfield.

Angus MacLane: He was Garfield, but he was also on Alice.

I think it was Rhoda.

Angus MacLane: On Rhoda! Anyway, great voice actor. And there was the 2D animated Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. Even that was a different voice. Like, the toy is often not voiced by the actor.

Right. Robert Downey Jr. is not doing Iron Man toy voices.

Angus MacLane: Jim Hanks does the Woody dolls. There’s a little bit of a different. Because the toy world is so first and foremost in my mind, there’s a lot of that, that’s a truth that we were playing with. More than any of that, Buzz is a different character. From this standpoint, he was a side character in Toy Story. He’s a main character in this and he has to do different things. He’s not the comic relief. He’s humorous, but he’s not the source of comedy the way he is in Toy Story. Like Sox or Izzy, the side characters, how they bounce off of Buzz is where the comedy comes from. So Buzz has to carry more emotional and dramatic weight.

So Lightyear came out in 1986. In Andy’s world, is Lightyear the biggest movie of 1986?

Angus MacLane: Not to Andy. Andy likes Aliens maybe a little bit more. But then it’s right after Aliens, I would say. I’m sure you find it fascinating. But Aliens is pretty awesome.

Galyn Susman: Aliens is awesome.

Angus MacLane: It’s hard to beat. It’s my favorite movie. We haven’t really got into what Andy’s top 10 is for 1986.

Galyn Susman: No, we definitely have not done that, no.

Well, Disney owns Aliens now, so…

Angus MacLane: It turns out when the same company owns the property, you still have to go through legal.

Galyn Susman: Oh yeah.

Angus MacLane: Oh yeah. So the very direct Aliens references in this film were cleared through the legal departments of both Disney and 20th Century Fox.

Why would that be necessary?

Angus MacLane: I don’t know. But boy, was it hilarious to me. I was like, how many hours can you bill having the same company talk to itself? That was pretty exciting.

Galyn Susman: That might actually be why, now that you said it.

Or maybe they have to ask James Cameron or something like that?

Angus MacLane: Yeah. That might be the case.

Sox the cat rules, by the way.

Angus MacLane: It’s a robot cat. I think we wanted to have the cute thing. We wanted a side character that would connect to Buzz and be a loyal character, but would be humorous for his genuine, just his truth and his him being so virtuous and helpful. I don’t know. Why do we like Sox? I think he’s funny.

Galyn Susman: Because he’s cute. He’s funny.

I’ve seen a lot of “Why doesn’t this look like a movie from 1995?” Or 1986, now. But I’m not sure a kid today wants to see a movie that uses 1995 animation technology.

Angus MacLane: Like matte lines. We could have done bad matte lines and rear projection…

Then every kid is asking, “Why does every ship have a big box around it as it flies?”

Angus MacLane: I mean, that’s a lot of energy for diminishing returns, I would say. Aliens, it still holds up really well with the exception of those rear projection shots, which are charming, but the miniature work looks so good. We think of it more like an idealized version of that. There is film grain, there is atmospherics from that era, but it’s meant to be an idealized version of that.

You didn’t reference “game over” in Lightyear.

Angus MacLane: That’s too obvious. I don’t want any reference to pull you out of the movie. There are subtle things that are just Easter eggs for the fans on the third viewing, when they’re looking in the upper left-hand corner because they’ve seen it.

If Mr. Paul Reiser made a cameo, would that be too obvious, or just right?

Angus MacLane: That would be fine. There isn’t anyone from Aliens in the film. But there’s lots of nerd infusion in the cast. Mary McDonald-Lewis was Lady Jaye on G.I. Joe. She was the voice of OnStar, but she was also Lady Jaye in G.I. Joe. And so that’s where I happened to know that nerd fact. So I was like, “Yeah, let’s get Lady Jaye in the movie.”

I have the Lady Jaye action figure on a shelf right next to me.

Angus MacLane: Do have the Spirit with Freedom?

I do.

Angus MacLane: Let me check it out!

Galyn Susman: I’m going to sit back and let you nerd yourself out.

Angus MacLane: Yeah, this is great. Oh, this is great. There are some G.I. Joe references in the film that are really obscure.

Like what?

Angus MacLane: Well, I would say there’s a design language of the toys. If you think about how G.I. Joe, the toys, and say the graphics, the sticker sheets, there’s a language to that that we looked at to have the solidity. More from the toys than from the cartoon. So the Zap Patrol outpost feels a little bit like it could be a G.I. Joe style. There’s a feeling to that world. It’s really oblique, but the design of the ships feels a little bit like a chunky G.I. Joe. Their ship looks a little bit like it could be a G.I. Joe vehicle. So I love the design language of those toys and that world and the graphics, that simplicity and clarity. It’s not meant to be a direct reference, but it’s really inspired by that kind of world. Toys were how we relived a lot of the adventures in the movies that we saw, because we didn’t have a way to re-see it.

For me, I saw some The Black Hole in Lightyear.

Angus MacLane: I love the robot design in that. Certainly, Maximilian. That movie is not good, unfortunately.

It’s very strange. I just re-watched it a couple weeks ago.

What did you think a few weeks ago? Because I re-watched part of it, too.

It’s pretty intense for a Disney movie from that era. Anthony Perkins gets drilled to death.

Angus MacLane: That’s one of the few things that I remember from that, but I always loved Maximilian and the Mego toys of that line.
Have you seen the Maximilian Mego figure?

I have the new Diamond Select.

Angus MacLane: Oh yeah! The Diamond Select. They did pretty good. I like that. I don’t have the large scale original V.I.N.CENT. But yeah. I love those toys.

Galyn Susman:: I was just going to say, can we just leave this all open and I’ll leave and you guys can nerd out?

Yeah, I think we got carried away…

Galyn Susman: No, this is a highlight of the thing for him.

‘Lightyear’ opens this Friday, June 17th. You can contact Mike Ryan directly on Twitter.

Kelly Clarkson Covers Britney Spears Days After Spears Called Her Out Over A 2007 Interview

Kelly Clarkson is seemingly on a quest to cover every song in the history of recorded music and she’s making good progress with the “Kellyoke” segment on The Kelly Clarkson Show. On today’s episode, she put a rock edge on one of the defining pop hits of the 2000s, Britney Spears’ “Womanizer.”

“Womanizer” is a solid song to perform, of course, but there’s some key context here: In a now-deleted Instagram post from a few days ago, Spears reacted to a clip of Clarkson from a 2007 radio interview, writing, “‘I don’t forget’ … don’t you just wish she would say she’s kidding ??? Clarkson … in a world where bullying has been heartbreaking, I’ve had my share …. Can we get an AWW ??? Psss … I’m not kidding … play on friends, play on !!!”

In the clip, Clarkson, who was 25 at the time, says, “Man, but wouldn’t it be funny if she’s just totally screwing with everyone? ‘Cause it’d be real funny if she were like, ‘Just kidding!’ I mean, think about it: She’s done no press for her album, which I love by the way… She’s done no press, she gets so much press off all this other stuff.”

In 2007, Spears famously spent some time in rehab, shaved her head, and was otherwise regularly in the news for reasons related to personal struggles. In February 2008, Spears was placed under her infamous conservatorship.

Clarkson has not publicly responded to Spears’ post.

After that clip started making the rounds, Bert Weiss, the interviewer in the video, cleared up a perceived misconception, tweeting, “Im the dude that interviewed @KellyClarkson and I can tell you that someone edited the actual interview to make it look like Kelly was talking sh%$ about @britneyspears. […] Truth is when you listen to the entire […] interview [Clarkson] is actually super supportive of [Spears]. So Brit is holding onto this grudge ’cause she’s misinformed.”

Cardi B Didn’t Appreciate People Comparing Her To Lizzo After She Changed Her ‘Grrrls’ Lyrics

Lizzo’s decision to change the lyrics of her new song “Grrrls” has prompted a heated discussion online, with fans taking up positions on both sides of the debate. On one, there are those applauding Lizzo for listening to disability advocates and removing the term “spaz out” from the song’s lyrics, as it has ableist connotations that were perhaps not widely known outside of that community. On the other side are those who believe Lizzo should have defended her original artistic expression and think that people are being “too sensitive.”

Cardi B, who has been censured online for some of the language in her old videos and tweets for years, didn’t appreciate being dragged into the debate. When one Twitter user typed up a thread discussing some of the peripheral aspects of the discourse, she unwisely compared Lizzo to Cardi B, saying that Cardi “gets away” with more due to light-skinned privilege, while Lizzo is scrutinized more closely due to her size. Cardi caught wind and let the tweeter have a piece of her mind.

“Ya will do mental gymnastics to include me in anything that people are getting dragged for,” she noted. “People have called me out for plenty of shit .Yall do it every week SOMETHINGS I apologize for & some things I will tell y’all TO SUCK DICK & personally If I was Lizzo I would of said SMD.”

There’s kind of a fair point in the original thread, but to get there, you kind of have to ignore a lot of other, fairer points (no pun intended). For instance, the fact that Lizzo is marketed more heavily to a pop audience than Cardi, and therefore her songs are exposed to a different audience than Cardi’s. Plus, while Cardi has been open to learning moments in the past, she’s also been known to lash out at critics — as is her right — and it’s possible the sort of advocates who’d ask her to change her own offensive lyrics just aren’t as familiar with her music. She’s also right about getting yelled at over a million different things a day, mostly by disingenuous bad actors trying to score ratings points.

I guess the point is that everybody’s human and perhaps using celebrities to make these points isn’t the best use of anyone’s energy. If anything, the time to address this stuff is in early childhood, before these biases, prejudices, and misconceptions are so ingrained in our personalities, we’re willing to insult strangers over them. If only there were some curriculum that directly addressed how biases are reinforced and offered pathways to confronting and undoing the most harmful ones… Oh wait, there is, and people have been going HAM over it for the last two years. Sigh.
