Lizzo is talented at commanding our attention in many ways, and this week the superstar shares her new record “Everybody’s Gay.” The uptempo dance bop shows the full extent of her vocals, her fun-loving disposition, and her willingness to shake the table with such a title. She sings about her excitement to go out, release her inhibitions, and even partake in demon time.
“Everybody’s Gay” arrives as part of Lizzo’s latest studio album Special, led by singles “About Damn Time” and “Grrrls.” Special, which was finished back in March according to the 34-year-old, marks her first project since the massively successful breakout, 2019’s Cuz I Love You, backed by the smash hit “Truth Hurts.” Lizzo will also be teaming up with American Express for Lizzoverse, an “immersive planetarium-esque lightshow experience produced by Superfly” in support of Special.
Despite the slowed releases, Lizzo has made her presence felt. She teamed up with Cardi B for “Rumors” back in August 2021, hosted and performed on Saturday Night Livethis past April, joined Harry Styles on the Coachella stage that same month and opened the 2022 BET Awards back in June. Lizzo also recently pledged $500,000 from her upcoming tour to planned parenthood and pro-choice organizations on the heels of the controversial Roe. v. Wade decision; Live Nation will match her donation, making it $1 million going toward the important cause.

Joey Badass is keeping the pressure on leading up to his delayed yet highly-anticipated album, 2000. This week he drops off his latest single “Zipcodes,” which finds the rapper having a blast in New York City but also traversing countries overseas. Regardless of what time zone or zip code he is in, the bars are copious.
In the interim, he joined Beast Coast and Flatbush Zombies on the 2019 project Escape From New York and appeared on a slew of features in 2021. There is still no confirmation as to when 2000 will hit DSPs, but Joey Badass is making sure to not leave the fans completely devoid of any music for the time being.

The J-Hope era has officially begun. After announcing his debut album at the end of June and leading off with the single “More,” the 28-year-old has now shared the “Arson” video. J-Hope raps along with the track as he walks past cars, motorcycles, chairs and other items that have been set ablaze.
This record is one of 10 appearing on J-Hope’s debut album Jack In The Box. Last week, he released the aforementioned single “More” with an accompanying video. This foray makes J-Hope the first BTS member to release a solo project after the group announced a hiatus a while back, an announcement that rendered the need for them to clarify that BTS is not breaking up but rather each member will explore their own solo ventures.
This announcement followed their 35-track anthology project Proof that came out in June, so the brief hysteria surrounding a breakup was understandable. However, J-Hope leading the charge simply means listeners will be able to experience BTS in a new, more individualistic way. Time will tell how J-Hope and his fellow members’ solo projects will be received, but given their success, this could simply boost their profiles. J-Hope is also slated to be one of the headliners for the 2022 Lollapalooza Festival taking place July 28-31 in Chicago.

We’re about a month away from Demi Lovato‘s hotly anticipated eighth album, Holy Fvck. On the latest from their album, a new single called “Substance,” a freshly sober Lovato searches for something meaningful.
Like many of the songs on the upcoming album, “Substance” sees Lovato returning to their pop-rock roots. On the guitar-and-drum heavy track, Lovato asks themselves, “Am I the only one looking for substance?” They continue, saying they “Got high, it only left me lonely and loveless / Don’t wanna end up in a casket, head full of maggots / Body full of jack sh*t, I get an abundance / Am I the only one looking for substance?”
In the song’s accompanying music video, directed by Cody Critcheloe, Lovato climbs into the window of an office building, stands on a desk surrounded by business executives having a meeting, then tosses papers in the air. They jump out of the window, landing safely onto a mattress before visiting several Hollywood-like film sets, causing mayhem throughout.
In addition to “Substance,” Lovato has revealed the tracklist for Holy Fvck, which features collaborations with Royal & The Serpent, Yungblud, and Dead Sara.

Finneas is having a big year. On top of winning an Oscar with his sister, Billie Eilish, for Best Original Song for No Time To Die, he appears to be launching a new musical era. The producer, songwriter, and singer has just released a new song called “Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa.”
On the punchy, percussion-driven track, he revels in spending time with his girlfriend, actress Claudia Sulewski, singing “she could be the Mona Lisa, if the Mona Lisa had a prettier face.”
Finneas announced the single last week, sharing album artwork featuring a distorted version of the iconic Mona Lisa portrait.
“The artwork is a painting by the incredible Gus Van Sant that he gave me before he even knew I had a song named after the Mona Lisa,” said Finneas in an Instagram post. “So cool and such an honor to have this piece of art as the cover for my song.”
The song’s accompanying video, directed by Sam Bennett, consists of footage of Finneas and Sulewski laying in bed, exploring different cities, and sampling ice cream in between stops on Eilish’s worldwide tour.
In addition to new music of his own, Finneas has also composed the score for B.J. Novak’s upcoming workplace comedy film, Vengeance, which hits theaters on July 29.
Still riding the highs of her critically-acclaimed sophomore album, 777, Latto is back with a new empowering anthem. On her new single, “P*ssy,” the Atlanta rapper is responding to the recent overturn of Roe v. Wade.
On the blaring beat, Latto raps, “How you ain’t got a p*ssy, but got opinions on p*ssy? / That’s p*ssy / My ovaries ain’t for you to bully.”
Latto announced the single earlier this week, and while many responded in support, others accused her of trying to capitalize off of the loss of the right to safe, legal abortion.
“Using serious issues to promote your song is wild,” said Twitter user @cruelfantasy. Latto replied, saying she was simply doing what rappers have done for decades.
“Orrrr I took my frustrations to the booth like a RAPPER & using my platform to spread awareness,” she said.

Another Twitter user claimed Latto was using the overturn to make a profit, to which she replied confirming she would be donating proceeds from the song to presumably pro-choice organizations.
“I actually am donating proceeds,” she responded. “Yall be the same ones saying ‘why u gotta post everything’ if I do & assume I’m not doing it if I don’t post it lol however I AM using my power (platform) to make a change regardless shut yo fake woke ass up what are YOU doing???”

Megan Thee Stallion is truly living a hot girl summer right now, posting photos in a skimpy bikini on the beach in Portugal and setting the internet on fire with a twerking video heard ’round the world. But she’s also been putting in a ton of work as of late on the music festival circuit. In July alone alone, the “Plan B” singer has performed at Longitude Festival in Ireland, Wireless Festival in the London, Openair Fraunfeld, and Finland’s Ruisrock Festival. But nobody could have predicted what happened when she invited Erykah Badu on stage with her during her performance at Switzerland’s Gurtenfestival tonight.
Badu walks up tossing her jacket off as Megan welcomes her to the stage. As Megan tells the DJ to “drop that sh*t!” her song “Kitty Kat” starts to play and Erykah Badu, wearing daisy dukes and a white tee, proceeds to give the Swiss audience a twerking masterclass. And we’re not talking a quick twerk here. This was a full-on, five stage maneuver from Badu and it was wholly unexpected. “When I tell yallll my girl Erykah Badu shocked thee sh*t outta me,” Meg said in the caption of the Instagram video of the Badu twerk. “I did not know she was bout to get up here and cut up like this in Switzerland Real mf TEXAS SH!T REAL MF HOT GIRL SH!T.”
Most of us would have expected this to have happened the other way around. But Erykah’s set was directly before Meg’s and she’s never been one to want to leave the stage in a hurry.

This week, the team here at Upworthy had the incredible honor of meeting one of humanity’s best. Civil rights leader and nonviolence educator Reverend Dr. James M. Lawson, who worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lewis to change the course of American history, came to our office and shared some of his wisdom with us.
At 93, Rev. Lawson has experienced the range of our nation’s ups and downs. He has also witnessed the power of people coming together for good. When asked where people should start, he shared the importance of community as a catalyst for change. We can all build community no matter where live, starting with our own families and neighborhoods, our social circles, groups and organizations we belong to, and beyond.
Sometimes, building community looks like big, bold initiatives, but more often it looks like creating simple connections—engaging in small acts of service, reaching out with a kind word or sharing a warm smile. When we consistently look for ways to connect and build bonds between people, we’ll find them.
One thing that brings people together, pretty much universally, is joy. “Laughter is the closest distance between two people,” as musician and comedian Victor Borge wrote, but we don’t even have to laugh out loud to connect. When we experience something joy-inducing as a collective, we create a shared experience that taps into our basic humanity and reminds us of what we have in common.
As you enjoy this week’s list of 10 things that made us smile, picture all of the people who are experiencing the same smiles and laughter you are. Let’s create a virtual community of joy, right here in this moment.
1. We have a new, incredible view of our universe—or at least a tiny-yet-ginormous piece of it.
u201cud83dudc40 Sneak a peek at the deepest & sharpest infrared image of the early universe ever taken u2014 all in a dayu2019s work for the Webb telescope. This image from the Webb telescope, the largest telescope in human history, gives us a never-before-seen view of space—or at least a tiny sliver of it. According to Vox, what’s captured in this image is the equivalent of a grain of sand being held out at arm’s length if you were looking at the night sky, which is mind-blowing considering the fact that almost all of the blobs in the image are entire galaxies. Wowsers.
2. The vastness of the universe is amazing, but so is a tiny butterfly on a tiny human.
Miggin found BLUTTAFLY… you will not regret watching this ☺️🥹 #fyp #butterfly #cute
“Are you okay bluttafly?” STAHP IT.
3. The American Rescue Dog Show celebrates unique doggos with adorable prizes like Best in Belly Rubs, Best in Snoring and Best in Underbite.

4. Anthropologist Grover Krantz donated his body to science on one condition—that his dog be included.
“I’ve been a teacher all my life,” Krantz told the Smithsonian, “and I think I might as well be a teacher after I’m dead, so why don’t I just give you my body.” It’s true.
5. This kid is having the best sleep of his life—or anyone’s life, for that matter.
Pretty sure this is what heaven looks like. Gracious.
6. Little Luca cheering for US women’s soccer star Alex Morgan— (“Aleh Morgaaaaan!”) is the cutest thing everrrrr.

7. A guy asked for 104 birthday wishes for his dad who was turning 104. He got thousands.
u201c@bravenewmalden Happy Birthday Gerald. This is my daughter Flora who was born 12 weeks premature and has just come home to us at three months old. Hope she makes it to 104 too ud83dudc4du201d
Gerald got bombarded with birthday messages from all over the world, but there’s something about this preemie newborn baby wishing a 104-year-old man a happy birthday that feels so beautiful. Gerald and Flora out here making us smile about the full circle of life. Love it.
8. A man surprised his parents after being away for three years and his mom’s reaction is so precious.
That tongue sticking out! Apparently being washed with a toothbrush reminds them of being bathed by their mom. I can’t handle it. May we all be so pampered.
If this roundup made you smile or laugh or both, create more bonds of joy by passing it along. And definitely come back next Friday for another top 10 for the week!
You never know when you have a legend in your family. Two years ago, a woman named Tara Garcia reached out to “CBS Mornings” correspondent David Begnaud to share a story. Her grandmother, Crescensia Garcia, had just turned 100 and had recently survived COVID-19, only having to briefly use oxygen. Begnaud shared the story of the elder Ms. Garcia with his followers on Twitter, including some pictures Tara had sent him. Little did they know, a bigger story was about to unfold.
Edna Cummings, a retired Army colonel, saw Begnaud’s tweet. One of the pictures Tara had sent him was of her grandmother in her military uniform. Cummings told “CBS Mornings” that seeing the photo of Crescensia “was like being in a casino and hitting the jackpot.” Why? Turns out Crescensia was part of a very special military unit during World War II.
Cresencia Garcia is 100 today. She beat coronavirus. She’s now out of the ICU, (was never intubated) & is no longer requiring oxygen. She served in the woman’s army corp during World War II. She served in England caring for wounded soldiers. What a woman. HBD Mrs. Garcia! pic.twitter.com/2fFDmWH8pl
Cummings needed to know Crescensia’s dog tag numbers to confirm her suspicions, so she reached out to Tara. After receiving them, Cummings was able to confirm that Crescensia was part of a burn unit located near Birmingham, England, which treated wounded soldiers due to a shortage of people in the area who could perform those procedures. She may not have thought much of it at the time (it was her military duty after all), but Crescensia Garcia was part of something special.
The SixTripleEight was an 855-member unit that was all Black and all women. Of course, the unit was segregated, but that didn’t stop the members from serving their country. Crescensia Garcia, who is now 102 years old, is one of only six surviving members of the unit. And her family had no idea.
“They’re the only military women’s unit to receive a congressional gold medal,” Cummings told “CBS Mornings.” “They are part of an elite group of less than 200 recipients. The first being General George Washington.” In addition to receiving the congressional gold medal, the family learned that Crescensia’s name is on a World War II monument along with other veterans, in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
When Tara Garcia found out this information, “I looked at my parents and said, ‘I think we just opened Pandora’s box here,'” she said. The revelation certainly led to some very cool opportunities, including meeting first lady Dr. Jill Biden.
Both Crescensia and Tara Garcia sat down with David Begnaud on “CBS Mornings” to talk about their family and it was truly the sweetest thing. Although she’s beginning to show signs of her age, Crescensia is still pretty sharp and a truly beautiful soul.
Crescensia was born in Puerto Rico in April 1920, before women even had the right to vote. At that time, a loaf of bread was less than 20 cents! She moved to New York City in her youth, and at the age of 24 she enlisted in the Army because the bombing of Pearl Harbor made her so enraged that she felt it was her civic duty to serve and protect. She was immediately put in an all-Black unit for her basic training in Texas.
“They put me in the Black section and there is a White section. That’s America to you. See? That’s America to you and it’s very sad, very sad,” she told Begnaud. After the segment, he explained to the news desk that the reason she was able to become a medic was due to her light skin color. She was able to “pass” as white, which earned her privilege.
Social media post helps woman discover her grandmother’s World War II past
Much like others who have served in war, Crescensia doesn’t seem to think her time in the Army was anything special. She told Begnaud that she was “just” a medic and was only doing her job tending to the injured.
“I am proud to be an American,” she said.
After the war, she went back to New York City, settling in the Bronx and getting married and having three children. She became a seamstress, working in Manhattan’s Garment District. Now, she is living her best life and sharing her story with the world.
During their interview, Begnaud explained that he had a surprise for both women. He had gotten in touch with the White House and arranged for Dr. Jill Biden to call and FaceTime with them.
“You are one incredible woman and I can’t thank you enough for all your service to our country,” Dr. Biden said warmly.
“And I salute you. Keep it up. Keep up the good work,” Crescensia said, raising her hand to salute the first lady.
At 102, her memory isn’t what it used to be, but, according to Tara, her presence of mind during the interview and conversation with the first lady is something neither of them will forget.
“The fact that she knew who that was. Yeah, and she felt that acknowledgment just now. That’s all I needed. That’s all I needed. I just want her to remember, that’s all,” Tara said.
We salute Crescensia Garcia and thank her for being who she is.
The National Galleries of Scotland made an incredible announcement on July 14. Experts at the Edinburgh gallery discovered a self-portrait by Vincent Van Gogh after taking an X-ray of his 1885 painting “Head of a Peasant Woman.”
To find another painting by Dutch master Vincent Van Gogh 132 years after his death is an incredible discovery not only for the art world, but humanity. It’s like digging up a hidden track by the Beatles, a secret notebook by Isaac Newton or unreleased poems by Langston Hughes.
“Hidden from view for over a century, the self-portrait is on the back of the canvas with Head of a Peasant Woman and is covered by layers of glue and cardboard,” the museum said in a statement.
u201cWe have made a truly incredible discovery. A previously unknown self-portrait by Vincent Van Gogh has been found in our collection. Yes, you read that right! ud83dudd8cufe0fud83dudc47u201d
— National Galleries of Scotland (@National Galleries of Scotland) 1657787454
The discovery is historic but it makes sense given the fact that Van Gogh was known for using both sides of a canvas to save money. The artist only sold one painting in his lifetime and became famous after his death in 1890 at the age of 37. He would go on to become one of the most influential painters in Western art history.
Lesley Stevenson, the gallery’s senior conservator, says that she felt “shock” to “find the artist looking at us,” she told the BBC. “When we saw the X-ray for the first time, of course we were hugely excited.”
The Edinburgh gallery describes the painting as “a bearded sitter in a brimmed hat with a neckerchief loosely tied at the throat. He fixes the viewer with an intense stare, the right side of his face in shadow and his left ear clearly visible.”
Even though it will take countless hours of delicate restoration for the new painting to be separated from “Head of a Peasant Woman,” the museum has a good idea of what it looks like thanks to the X-ray image.
Van Gogh famously cut off his ear in 1888, two years before his death, and in what is presumed to be a self-portrait, the artist’s ear is still attached to his head. He lopped off the lower part of his ear during a bout of depression while staying in Arles, France. He later documented the experience in a painting titled, “Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear.”
“Later in date than the Head of a Peasant Woman, the hidden painting is likely to have been made during a key moment in Van Gogh’s career, when he was exposed to the work of the French impressionists after moving to Paris,” the gallery wrote on its blog.

— National Galleries of Scotland (@NatGalleriesSco) July 14, 2022
Museum visitors will be able to see an X-ray of the image in a lightbox at a new exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery entitled, “A Taste for Impressionism: Modern French Art from Millet to Matisse.”
“Moments like this are incredibly rare,” Frances Fowle, a senior curator at the National Galleries of Scotland, said according to ABC News. “We have discovered an unknown work by Vincent Van Gogh, one of the most important and popular artists in the world.”
