Ella Mai Gets Her Groove Back In The Retro-Styled ‘How’ Video With Roddy Ricch

Don’t cross Ella Mai, or she and her associates will make you regret it. That’s the basic premise of the London-bred, LA-based singer’s new, retro-styled video for “How” featuring Roddy Ricch and Mustard. In it, Ella is stuck in an unfulfilling relationship with a very wealthy man, and with the help of her comrades Mustard and Roddy, plots an escape that leaves her beau breathless — literally and permanently. In the final shots, she hits the road with a car full of luggage, presumably to get her groove back.

“How” is the third single from Ella Mai’s second album, Heart On My Sleeve, which also features the singles “Not Another Love Song” and “DFMU” and appearances from Latto, Roddy, and Lucky Daye. The album was once again executive produced by Mustard and released through 10 Summers and Interscope Records on May 6, debuting at No. 15 on the US Billboard 200 with 20,000 album-equivalent units — the majority in pure album sales. If there’s truly an R&B renaissance taking place, Ella Mai is certainly at its forefront; Heart On My Sleeve landed at No. 2 on Billboard‘s Top R&B Albums chart.

Meanwhile, “How” co-star Roddy Ricch has been enjoying a bounce-back summer behind his new EP, The Big 3, which made up for the disappointing reception for his own sophomore album Live Life Fast.

Victoria Beckham Reunites With Spice Girls For A New Documentary

The strained relationship between Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) and the other four members of the Spice Girls seems to finally be cooling off. The 2019 Spice World Tour of UK stadiums famously only featured four of the five Spice Girls, as Beckham didn’t sign on to join Mel B, Gerri Halliwell, Melanie C, and Emma Bunton on stage. While Mel C said late last year that the Girls were “constantly” talking about a reunion, it was always Beckham who held up the full lineup from appearing together. Now, according to Metro, Beckham is on board for a new Spice Girls documentary TV show.

The documentary series will be created by the same team that was behind Netflix’s incredible Michael Jordan retrospective, The Last Dance. The Director was Jason Hehir and in an appearance on an Australian TV program, Mel B had high praise for his work.

“The director and the whole concept of how that was shot and filmed is really, really, really good,” she said. “So we’ll be doing our own version with them.”

Promising a mix of behind-the-scenes stories and the chronicles of the pop quintet’s ascent to global superstardom, Mel B also shared an err…interesting anecdote: ‘The rap in the Wannabe video, I actually wrote on the toilet while the other girls were doing the vocals.”

A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad Gets Emotional Remembering The Great Phife Dawg

In the history of rap, A Tribe Called Quest has always had a lane of its own. Innovative and original song concepts bathed in warm, minimalist jazz breaks made them stand out and have influenced generations. The rhyme synergy between Q-Tip and Phife Dawg remains the stuff of legend. Today, you can still hear the impact of A Tribe Called Quest albums like Midnight Marauders across rap, and more explicit homages on tracks like Logic’s “Midnight Marauder.”

On March 22, 2016, Phife Dawg passed away after a long battle with diabetes. In the newest episode of The People’s Party with Talib Kweli, legendary producer of Tribe, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, shares his reflections on Phife’s battle with diabetes and their collective attempts to help him win that battle. Talib Kweli just mentioning the name of Ali’s dear friend made him pause.

“You see I’m still affected by the loss of my brother,” said Muhammad. “I still miss him.”

From there, Ali Shaheed Muhammad shares how during Phife’s battle with the disease he and Q-Tip tried to help their friend to the best of their ability.

“He ultimately transitioned because of the diabetes,” Muhammad says. “The impact was felt from its inception to him no longer being here…Phife has a comedic persona. So it was his way of boxing diabetes. Like ‘You got me, I’m not sure how to overcome you. But I’m gonna make you a part of my life in a different way.’ And he did it in a way where other diabetics would not feel alone. Tip loved him so hard and wanted him to stop doing certain things. I think he said it in a way that felt a little more harder. My persona is a little more delicate — Tip and I were saying the same things to him.”

Later, Muhammad — who has continued to thrive in music over the decades, with a wide range of projects — recalls how even on tour they worked to let Phife know they were on his team to the end.

“’You understand what sugar does to you? So how about we combat it by doing some push-ups on the tour bus in the middle of the road?’” he recalls. “And Phife would be like ‘Man, leave me alone.’ That was how we tried to help as best we could.”

Teen who was publicly body shamed by Matt Gaetz helps raise $168,000 for abortion funds

Sometimes things are said unintentionally that can hurt feelings or cause harm but sometimes things are intended to do just that.

At the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit in Tampa, Florida, congressman Matt Gaetz made comments that essentially body shamed an entire demographic of people. His comments didn’t go unnoticed as they made the rounds of social media. Olivia Julianna, 19 decided to make a witty response to his remarks on Twitter before Gaetz took her profile picture and shared it in what appears to be an effort to shame the teen’s appearance.

Now no one can fully say whether Gaetz intended to cause harm with his speech or his tweet until he decides to clarify his reasoning. But it sure seems Julianna’s sassy response ruffled his feathers a bit. The teen made it clear that she would not tolerate body shaming by writing, “Its come to my attention that Matt Gaetz — alleged pedophile — has said that it’s always the ‘odious… 5’2 350 pound’ women that ‘nobody wants to impregnate’ who rally for abortion,” the tweet read. “I’m actually 5’11. 6’4 in heels. I wear them so the small men like you are reminded of your place.”

Gaetz is currently being federally investigated for sex trafficking. The congressman denies these claims and has currently not been charged with a crime.

Julianna let the world know in no uncertain terms that type of behavior wasn’t OK. Given Gaetz’s original comments about pro-choice activists looking “like a thumb” and saying, “they’re like 5’2″, 350 pounds,” it’s no surprise he came right back at the teen by sharing her profile picture to his 1.6 million followers. He captioned the picture with, “Dander raised,” which according to Merriam-Webster means “to become angry.”

The exchange didn’t end there. Instead of backing down after the politician publicly exposed her photo to over a million people, Julianna saw an opportunity. After the quick tiff, the teen used the increased attention to fundraise for the Gen-Z for Choice Fund which distributes money to 50 different abortion funds across America. Julianna told Today that tweeting about the fund, which included a link, has since raised $168,000. She told Today, “I wanted to highlight the positive work that I’m doing from this very negative sphere that I’ve been placed in.”

Congressman Gaetz seems to be going out of his way to make others upset. Even Mike Pence’s chief of staff, Marc Short came out swinging, metaphorically of course in an unexpectedly strong statement on CNN. In the clip he implies that Gaetz will be unable to vote in the election due to him being incarcerated by the time November rolls around.

Julianna is the one coming out on top in this situation by using it to fundraise for a cause that is important to millions of people. I’m not sure what the future holds for this teen but something tells me she’s someone we should be on the look out for in the future. She’s a force.

The Very Best Weed Strains For A Social Summer Spent Outdoors

It’s high summer — time for a vibe check. Have you been spending your days lounging on the lakeside, laughing uncontrollably? Are your weekends awash in wild pursuit of the sun? Do you lay under the warm night sky, drawing constellations in the stars with your friends? If you answered “no” to any of these questions, you haven’t been smoking enough weed. If summer is high, you should be too.

I personally believe there’s no better season to smoke weed than high summer (with deep winter being a close second), but it has to be the right kind of weed. My perfect summer weed is bright, exciting, and highly social. It’s picking a flower that gives you life instead of draining your energy. This kind of weed is up for anything and doesn’t drag you into a hot, sticky maze where your physical form feels daunting and you’re glued to the closest chair, couch, or bed.

Though it’s nearly the end of July, we still have a ton of warm days ahead — so you’ll need a lot of different social summer strains to choose from. There are a number of factors that can make flower social. Most of them depend on how your unique endocannabinoid system reacts to the chemicals produced by that specific plant. But there are some elements that, for me, surely do not make for social flower. For starters, unbalanced cannabinoid ratios with THC that is abnormally high can counteract your ability to be social and bring on paranoia or anxiety.

In short, the more balanced the cannabinoid and terpene profiles are, the easier this flower is going to be on your body and spirit, and the more fun you’re going to have. Especially if you don’t smoke weed all the time.

To help you bask blissfully in the radiance of the season, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite strains for summer vibes. These are the strains I’ve been smoking since the equinox. Now, let’s get stoned!

Lucy Lavender by Sohum Royal (Redwood Roots)

Lucy Lavender
Uproxx

Lucy Lavender, grown by Humboldt legend Sohum Royal and available through Redwood Roots, is such a unique strain it felt wrong not to start this list with her. This weed is truly that bitch, a Rihanna-level superstar that cannot be imitated or duplicated.

Every sensory aspect of this sun-grown flower is killer, but the scent is beyond. High in terpinolene, caryophyllene and humulene, the complex smell conjures visions of gardens at midnight, blackberries, and fresh, piney earth. I also had in my notes that she smells like the color violet, which just somehow works.

The high is extremely versatile. It’s upbeat, social, and fun with a whimsical, psychedelic flair. This flower has harnessed some kind of otherworldly magic. She’s just plain special.

Lucy Lavender
Uproxx

I love this strain for summer because it’s perfect for every activity. She can be chill and social at a barbeque, as well as bright and bubbly if the mood strikes to party. I also found it’s great for writing and creative work, as when you focus your energy inward, the strain becomes alert and focused, yet whimsical enough to make you think of cool shit.

Bottom line:

Perfect for stargazing, party hopping, and making art.

#26 by Cannacountry Farms

Cannacountry Farms #26
Uproxx

Cannacountry’s #26 blows the mind of every single person I have ever shown it to for three reasons:

  1. It is so purple it’s almost black.
  2. It’s so purple it will dye the paper purple if you roll it in a joint.
  3. It smells like an electric berry smoothie, and feels like one too!

The word I use to describe #26 is ZINGY! A cross between Cherimoya and Forbidden Fruit, she sends chills down your spine with her wild electric energy in the best way possible. I’ve often described her as the naughty little sister of Whitethorn Rose, a famed offering from Huckleberry Hill Farms I’ve written about extensively that’s captivated Los Angeles from the hills of Humboldt over the past couple years.

Cannacountry Farms #26
Cannacountry Farms

Aside from #26’s optics, which are insane, the terpene profile is a rush of dark, lush fruits, and something a little spicy that knocks you back when you smell it. Even just a whiff of this flower will send electricity down your spine.

The high is perfect for being out and about, getting shit done, or having fun in the woods. Its lower THC percentage (15%) makes it perfect for daytime use, leaving you invigorated, not obliterated. Upbeat and dreamy, it’s the way I want to feel all the time, so I smoke it all of the time.

Bottom line:

Vibrant! Exciting! The opposite of what people who don’t smoke weed think weed does to you!

Moonana Wreck by Fig Farms

Moonana Wreck by Fig Farms
Fig Farms

Fig Farms absolutely crushes the indoor game, regularly sweeping all the big weed award shows and blowing the minds of everyone all the time. They grow some of the most beautiful weed in the world, and you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would dispute that fact.

Moonana Wreck is truly a joy to behold. A cross between Banana Fig and Moondrops, this strain is high in terpinolene with a more balanced ratio of myrcene and limonene, making it an epic daytime smoke.

Crunchy, geometric nugs look like an MC Escher painting. Dark blue, violet, bright orange, light green, and completely covered in crystals. The nose is lush, mysterious, kind of like a Trainwreck profile with a minty hint of sage. Every time I smell it I audibly say mmmmmm after.

This is a great heavy hitter for daytime because you’re super stoned yet equally capable. I have really been enjoying hiking and exploring in nature with this strain, as well as going about my daily life because it makes everything sparkle.

Bottom line:

A powerful yet capable high that’s great for exploring.

Mandarin Tart F2 by Sticky Fields

Sticky Fields Mandarin Tart
Uproxx

Sticky Fields flower gets you super fucking stoned in the best way possible. Grown by a charismatic dude named Sticky in the hills of Mendocino, Mandarin Tart F2 is upbeat, laid back, and makes everything hilarious. This flower conjures the fun, warm feelings that make you feel grateful to be alive.

Mandarin Tart by Sticky Fields
Sticky Fields

Everything about this strain is warm. The nugs are bright orange and green, giving off an overall sunny appearance. The smell and taste are both mandarin explosions that knock you back out of the jar, like fresh tangerines and Meyer lemons spritzing from the rind.

I always say whatever experience the flower had growing is the experience you will have by smoking it, and this flower had a good fucking time growing up. The high feels like getting a hug. Lighthearted and super silly, it brings peace to your soul. It’s not the best for being productive, but for floating down a warm river glittering in the sunlight, this is your girl. This weed is for wandering, dreaming, and climbing trees, perfect for the dog days of summer ahead.

Bottom line:

Summertime in flower form, Mandarin reminds you that life can be fun if you let it. Go out and pick it!

Stardust by Rebel Grown

Stardust by Rebel Grown
Uproxx

Stardust by Rebel Grown is, in a word, interstellar. Rebel Grown is known for their extremely high-quality sun-grown flower grown off grid on a bio-diverse homestead in Humboldt. They crush award shows with their flower, and this year won the Emerald Cup.

Stardust has a dreamy, cosmic high led by limonene, caryophyllene, and myrcene, meaning it’s uplifting, relaxing, and frees you from worldly stressors like anxiety and pain. With an earthy lemon berry smell, the flavor is like fruit picked from the tree with hints of pepper and spice. I love the high of this flower because it gives you galactic insight and the ability to see beyond the boring veil of reality. The body high has a gravity-free quality, where you feel highly euphoric. As soon as you exhale the smoke it’s like you get 40 lbs lighter.

This flower is great for dancing and enjoying the sensory aspects of life. It makes you feel invigorated and ready for excitement if that’s your vibe, but can also be a fun chilling partner as well. I also think it’s a great alcohol replacement because it carries the same carefree, social buoyancy without all the gross energy that comes with binge drinking poison.

Bottom line:

Free yourself from the chains of existence with this cosmic flower!

Sour Diesel Pack by Aster Farms x The Flower Shop

Sour Diesel by Aster Farms x The Flower Shop
Aster Farms

Sour Diesel is one of the most iconic strains of all time, a New York City classic known for its uplifting, focusing, and stress relieving qualities. Aster Farms, an eco-conscious sun-grown brand from Lake County, CA, knocks it out of the park with their cut of SD, which has long been one of my favorites on the market.

To celebrate the inherent New York-ness of Sour Diesel, Aster Farms has teamed up with NYC hot spot The Flower Shop and launched their killer cut in a super chic gold preroll pack that’s ready to go wherever you are in style.

While some cuts of Sour can air on the dreamy side, Aster Farms is particularly amazing for getting out there and killing it, whatever that means to you. For me, I like it equally for writing articles (I just smoked one of the joints, look at me go!), hiking, exploring, and narrowly circumventing my chronic road rage while driving around LA.

It has a perfect balance of excitement, purpose, and anxiety relief that works so well for coping with being alive and having to function in society. Sour and gassy with a touch of fruity pine, the high is immersive and upbeat, like a rave in the redwoods.

Bottom line:

Energizing, life-brightening, and existentially relaxing, this weed is as good for completing mundane tasks as it is for enjoying the sumptuous summer sun. Go get it and get out there!

Buy it here: $40

Log Cabin by THC Design

Log Cabin by THC Design
THC Design

THC Design is a fantastic indoor cultivator that has been growing top-quality flower long before it was legal to do so. In the weed world, that means they’re legit as fuck, which is proven through their long line of hit-making cultivars. Their newest offering, Log Cabin, is no exception.

Log Cabin has super high THC, coming in at 34%, but its mellow terpene profile (led by myrcene and caryophyllene) balances out to a hyphy little high that isn’t at all overwhelming.

This flower has a really beautiful nose that continues to unfurl from spice to lemons to tart fruit and pine. The nugs are visually stunning, navy blue and bright orange on the outside, with lots of lime green. Like the smell, its flavor is tart-like lemons and dark fruit with a spicy, earthy finish. Deep forest vibes.

This is a cozy and relaxed yet upbeat high that is perfect for a dinner party or chill, intimate gathering. It’s mentally stimulating and physically exciting, but overall doesn’t make you want to hit the ground running. So much is happening with the mental high and the body euphoria that you find yourself totally content with whatever situation you find yourself in. This is a super social strain because it makes you think deeply and want to talk about it, making it great for hanging out.

Bottom line: Perfect for when it’s too hot to hit the hiking trails or for dinner parties at sunset.

Runtz Cake by Lady Sativa Farm (Redwood Roots)

Runtz Cake by Lady Sativa Farm
Lady Sativa Farm

Runtz Cake by Lady Sativa Farm is perfect for getting down on summer nights. This flower hails from a mountaintop garden in Humboldt and has descended upon us to make the end of summer as magical as the beginning.

Her nugs are gorgeous, with hues of purple, olive, and blue. The overall tone of the flower is fruity, lush, and shrouded in mystery, like the hours between midnight and twilight when the moonflowers bloom.

High in caryophyllene, myrcene, and humulene, she has a fruity, minty quality, like licorice berry with a little pepper… It’s complex, you’ll have to try it for yourself.

Runtz Cake by Lady Sativa Farm
Uproxx

The high is dreamy and relaxing like fog rolling down the hills. There is an immediate physical reaction when you consume this flower. Tension and stress literally melt off your body without making your mind heavy. This pronounced body high is great for sex, food, dancing, and music. It feels like walking through a party in an enchanted field of flowers with really good music and light projecting on the grass.

Obviously, I was super stoned on this flower when I wrote that, but regardless, that is the vibe. Another thing I had in my notes was phosphorescent lagoon energy which is also the vibe.

Bottom line:

Perfect for enjoying summer nights.

Buy it here: $40

Drew Martin: The Collection

The Collection by Drew Martin
Drew Martin

While not exactly a strain, I wanted to end this list with Drew Martin’s mixed botanical preroll pack, The Collection, because it’s arguably the most social summer cannabis product one could ever imagine.

Not only is this beautifully designed pack a conversation piece in itself, but these low-dose prerolls are also blended with effect-specific botanicals and designed to make you your best self, as opposed to simply your most stoned self. Each joint in this pack is designed to make you feel a little something special in a different way. The flower is grown by Moonmade Farms, an incredible regenerative and woman-owned farm from Humboldt, so in addition to the subtle lifting effects of botanicals like rose, ginger, passion flower, etc, you have some really kick-ass sungrown weed that will raise your vibration, strengthen your aura, and make you the light of the party.

Bottom line:

Perfect for casual or novice users who want to dabble in public without feeling weird, and look good doing it.

Kelis Says She Didn’t Know She Was Sampled On Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’: ‘It’s Not A Collab It’s Theft’

Beyoncé’s highly anticipated album Renaissance, arriving tomorrow, is full of sampled artists, including Donna Summer, Big Freedia, and Kelis. Kelis, though, is not happy about it. On an Instagram post made by the account @kelistrends about Kelis being sampled on Renaissance, Kelis shared her frustrations in the comments.

“My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance of all 3 parties involved is astounding,” she wrote. “I heard about this the same way everyone else did . Nothing is ever as it seems , some of the people in this business have no soul or integrity and they have everyone fooled.”

She argued with fans in the comments, replying to those excited about the collaboration: “it’s not a collab it’s theft,” she wrote. People pointed out that her beef is not with Beyoncé but instead with Pharrell, who she accused of stealing profits from her after she worked with him on her first two records. She opened up about the feud in an interview last year: “Their argument is: ‘Well, you signed it,’” she told the journalist. “I’m like: ‘Yeah, I signed what I was told, and I was too young and too stupid to double-check it.’”

Holt McCallany Joins The Cast Of ‘Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two’

Some good news for Mindhunter fans because great news for Mindhunter fans would be the return of Mindhunter: Mindhunter star Holt McCallany is accompanying the last movie star Tom Cruise on an impossible mission.

Deadline reports that McCallany has officially joined Mission: Impossible — Deading Reckoning Part Two, the eighth installment in the franchise that began in 1996. The actor will play Secretary of Defense Bernstein who will hopefully have a lot to do in the movie because McCallany deserves it. McCallany joins Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Simon Pegg, Shea Whigham and Pom Klementieff. Unfortunately, this is pretty much all we know about the film at this time, besides the fact that it is directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who also wrote the screenplay. Part Two is rumored to put an end to the franchise, at least for Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. Mission: Impossible — Deading Reckoning Part One is due in theaters July 14, 2023 (the week before the highly anticipated Barbie/Oppenheimer weekend).

While McCallany is best known for playing FBI Special Agent Bill Tench on Netflix’s Emmy-nominated drama from filmmaker David Fincher, he has also done some other stuff, including a role in Guillermo del Toro’s 2021 film Nightmare Alley and the AMC series 61st Street.

Mission: Impossible — Deading Reckoning Part Two is expected to come to theaters on June 28, 2024. Hopefully, our planet will still be around for that.

Even More Fans Can Enjoy ‘Abbott Elementary’ On Streaming, Thanks To A Deal From Hulu And HBO Max

Even though Abbott Elementary premiered at the end of 2021, the quirky sitcom about a public school in Philadelphia quickly became one of this year’s most-loved sitcoms, snagging a handful of Emmy nominations and internet praise. In an effort to get new and old fans back on board before the second season, HBO Max and Hulu have struck up an interesting deal.

The first season of the series, which aired on ABC, will debut on HBO Max on August 20th so fans can re-watch the iconic Quinta Brunson-led series before season two. On September 21st, the show will return on ABC, then new episodes will be available for streaming on Hulu the next day. These new episodes will remain on Hulu and complete future seasons will be available to stream on HBO Max before the next season premieres on ABC. It’s similar to what Netflix did with Better Call Saul before it returned to AMC.

Abbott Elementary’s first season became a breakout hit and one of the few cable TV shows that stuck the landing with social media. The show received seven Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress for Quinta Brunson, Outstanding Supporting Actor for Tyler James Willians, and Outstanding Supporting Actress for acting veteran Sheryl Lee Ralph and Janelle James.

All in all, it’s been a pretty good year for Bronson and the Abbott crew, who kick off the second season of their hit comedy on September 21st on ABC.

The Best A24 Movies Streaming On HBO Max Right Now

HBO Max has plans to welcome a massive lineup of A24 movies to its streaming platform this Fall. Why is that such a big deal? Because A24, especially in the last few years, has become a kind of cinematic haven for directors, storytellers, and actors hoping to make interesting, thought-provoking, highly-watchable movies that don’t take place in a comic book multiverse.

Now, not all of the studio’s standouts have made their way to HBO Max yet — here’s looking at you Minari, Zola, The Green Knight, and Men — but enough are calling the streamer home that we thought a binge-watching guide might be in order. We’ve sifted through the dozens of A24 films headed for HBO Max to single out the handful you should watch first.

Ex Machina Review
A24

Ex Machina (2014)

Run Time: 108 min | IMDb: 7.7/10

Alex Garland’s sci-fi thriller breathed new life into the tired A.I. trope when it landed in theaters years ago. The film focuses on a naïve young programmer (Domhnall Gleeson) who’s selected amongst a pool of applicants to evaluate a new A.I. lifeform. The poor kid is whisked away to a remote villa to spend time with the eerily-human-looking robot, Ava (Alicia Vikander), and her eccentric, often cruel creator Nathan (Oscar Isaac), a genius with an ego to match his talent. The film takes some twists you don’t expect, and Isaac gives cinema one of its greatest dance sequences, in case you needed more reason to watch.

Obvious Child

Run Time: 84 min | IMDb: 6.8/10

Jenny Slate remains an underrated stand-up comedian, but she proved herself a capable leading lady in Gillian Robespierre’s indie rom-com, Obvious Child. Slate plays Donna, a young hopeful trying to make it in the world of stand-up. She frequents a few undergrounds around New York City, honing her set while disappointing her successful academic mother by phoning it in at a used bookstore in Brooklyn for her regular 9-5. She has a brief and promising love affair with Max (Jake Lacy) before facing a dilemma: an unplanned pregnancy. There aren’t many films that can tackle the sensitive topic of abortion with dignity, grace, and a ton of poop jokes, so you’ll want to check this one out.

Under The Skin

Run Time: 108 min | IMDb: 6.3/10

Scarlett Johansson stars in this sci-fi thriller about an other-worldly woman with a dark agenda. The film sees Johansson using her sex appeal to lure unsuspecting men to their watery doom while beginning to contemplate her own existence with every new partner she seduces. It’s a subtle reverse of rape culture, with themes of race and immigration mixed in, but if all of that goes over your head, you’ll at least enjoy seeing Johansson off a bunch of frat bros who more than deserve it.

Amy

Run Time: 128 min | IMDb: 7.8/10

Amy Winehouse was one of the most talented singers of a generation and her rise to fame was as meteoric as her eventual fall. This doc, which explores the ins and outs of her family life, her relationships, and her music career, pulls archival footage taken by those closest to her, interviewing people that knew her best and chronicling her struggle with drugs and alcohol, a fight that she ultimately lost her life to.

A24

Room

Run Time: 118 min | IMDb: 8.2/10

Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay star in this gripping drama about a mother and son held hostage for nearly a decade. The film, based on a work of fiction, pulls elements from real-life trauma cases as it follows a woman named Joy (Larson) and her son Jack (Tremblay) who exist in a singular room, cut off from the outside world. The two plot an escape, are eventually rescued, and must cope with the effects of their harrowing ordeal while adjusting to life outside of the room. Larson is deserving of every award she won for this thing, and her chemistry with Tremblay will have you grabbing for tissues throughout the film.

Enemy

Run Time: 91 min | IMDb: 6.9/10

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in this complete mindf*ck from director Denis Villeneuve about a man who goes in search of his doppelganger after spotting him in a movie and uncovering sinister secrets about himself in the process. Gyllenhaal plays both Adam, a quiet professor, and Anthony, an outspoken actor, who eventually meet and disrupt each other’s lives, but whether both men exist or whether they’re just figments of the same man’s consciousness is up to you to figure out.

A24

A Most Violent Year

Run Time: 125 min | IMDb: 7/10

Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac play a husband/wife duo caught up in the criminal underground in this darkly-lit drama. Isaac plays Abel Morales, an immigrant and aspiring business owner who finds himself the target of ruthless competitors when he takes steps to secure a facility to transport oil throughout the boroughs. Chastain plays his wife Anna, a shrewd businesswoman in her own right who comes from a mobster family. The two fights against a determined D.A. and corrupt criminals in order to secure the money they need to purchase the land, but in doing so, they become the enemy they’ve been fighting against. It’s a heavy, morose kind of film, filled with violence and shady back-door dealings, but Chastain and Isaac bring a bit of brilliance to it all.

Slow West

Run Time: 84 min | IMDb: 6.9/10

Kodi Smit-McPhee plays a young Scottish man who travels from his home country to the dry, bleeding heart of the American West to find the woman he loves. Along the way, he meets a band of outlaws looking to collect the bounty on his intended’s head and a thuggish, slow-drawling Michael Fassbender who acts as his reluctant chaperone. It’s a fun, inventive take on the classic Western adventure, and it doesn’t hurt that the cinematography is gorgeous.

lifeafterbeth-jpg.jpeg
A24

Life After Beth (2014)

Run Time: 89 min | IMDb: 5.6/10

Aubrey Plaza and Dane DeHaan star in this horror comedy about a guy named Zach mourning the loss of his girlfriend, only to discover she’s come back to life. Plaza stars as Beth, the dead girl revived, who begins exhibiting strange behavior, eventually going into full-blown zombie mode while her devoted boyfriend Zach (DeHaan) tries to manage her mood swings and her pesky craving for human flesh. John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon play Beth’s parents, who hilariously try to cover up their daughter’s current undead state, and though things go off the rails in the final third, watching Plaza play a moody, angst-ridden walking corpse is one hell of a good time, even if it does give you nightmares.

Mississippi Grind (2015)

Run Time: 108 min | IMDb: 6.4/10

Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn star in this road trip drama about a pair of down-on-their-luck gamblers making their way to New Orleans. Reynolds plays Curtis, the younger of the two who’s developed a system to manage his gambling habits. The key, Curtis says, is to not care about winning. Gerry (Mendelsohn) on the other hand is deep into his addiction, out of money, and unable to quit. The two team up, traveling down the Mississippi river, betting all they have on horse races and roulette tables before their wild ways catch up with them. It’s a film steeped in the South and there’s plenty to admire about the scenery, but it’s also a film that does a decent job of tackling addiction without making it feel trite and overdone.

Sean Hannity Seems To Think That Trump’s COVID Could Beat Up Biden’s COVID

On Wednesday, Joe Biden was officially declared COVID-free and allowed to exit the isolation he has been in since first testing positive for the virus last week. While the president has noted from the very beginning of his illness that his symptoms were mild due to being double-vaxxed and double-boosted, that wasn’t good enough for Sean Hannity.

On Wednesday night, rather than just report that the president is now COVID-free and move on, the Fox News host and longtime pal of Donald Trump wanted to make it clear to his viewers that the reason Trump ended up hospitalized during his bout with COVID and Biden did not had everything to do with the strength of the virus and nothing to with the vigor of the infected man.

Now, it didn’t help matters that Biden did seem to maybe be getting a kinda sorta little dig in at Trump when he reminded Americans:

“When my predecessor got COVID, he had to get helicoptered to Walter Reed Medical Center; he was severely ill. Thankfully, he recovered. When I got COVID, I worked from upstairs of the White House and the offices upstairs and for that five-day period.”

For his part, as Mediaite reported, Hannity was clearly pissed that Biden had dared to invoke (though Hannity definitely said “evoke”) Trump’s name when sharing his happy health report:

“Now what Joe failed to mention is that the current variant, which is BA.5—the dominant variant of the omicron—is much, much weaker than the original strain that infected then-President Trump.”

But Hannity wasn’t content to let his diatribe just end there. He wanted to make sure to get a few extra digs in and help his pal out in what seems to be a never-ending battle between two old men who each want to make fun of the other one for being old. Sort of like Grumpy Old Men, but if Walter Matthau’s character was a sociopath intent on starting a nuclear war:

“By the way, not that I recall, I never saw Donald Trump trip, not once, not twice, but three times climbing up the stairs to Air Force One and then having a spokesperson claim it was very windy.”

Nice one, Sean!

Though there was that umbrella incident…

And, ya know, that r-a-m-p…

Not to mention the Capitol insurrection. But ok, fine: Trump’s COVID could totally beat up Biden’s variant.
