The Lakers And Pacers Have Reportedly ‘Reengaged’ On Buddy Hield Trade Talks

As we approach the back half of July, the NBA offseason slows from its furious early pace to a crawl as team executives, players, and agents all turn one eye towards vacation. With the initial pressure of getting deals done immediately gone and two months until training camp comes into focus, there’s just not much driving deals and trades at this point in the calendar.

Still, there are some teams desperate enough to continue making phone calls and trying to engage in trade talks as they know they don’t want to arrive at camp with the roster as is. The team at the top of that list is the Los Angeles Lakers, who still have a number of open roster spots and don’t seem to want to commit to rounding out their roster until they know whether they’ll have to go into the season with Russell Westbrook as their starting point guard or not.

While the league awaits any kind of indication that the Nets are going to budge from their asking price on Kevin Durant (and, subsequently, Kyrie Irving), the Lakers are looking elsewhere for a chance to bolster their rotation. According to Dave McMenamin, they have recently “reengaged” on talks with the Pacers about Buddy Hield, with two potential routes they could take to try and pry the sharpshooter out of Indiana, one being a smaller Talen Horton-Tucker focused package or a larger Russell Westbrook deal that would also look to bring Myles Turner to L.A.

Now, it takes two to tango, and after Horton-Tucker’s down year in 2021-22, it remains to be seen if he has enough value to be the centerpiece of a trade for a rebuilding team. A Westbrook (and picks) for Hield and Turner trade has been floated for months but Indiana likely will be asking for significant draft assets in return (as in, both of the L.A. picks they can trade in 2027 and 2029) and the Lakers aren’t too keen on mortgaging the future in total to get rid of Westbrook. As such, we still sit in a bit of a stalemate, but the fact that they’ve circled back to the Pacers indicates that maybe they’re willing to try something new, and Indiana might have some newfound motivation to make a deal after failing to land Deandre Ayton with their max offer sheet.

Trevor Noah Mocked The Dallas School District’s Latest Plan For Stopping Gun Violence: Forcing Kids To Carry Clear Backpacks

On May 24, 2022, a teenager walked into in elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, and proceeded to murder 21 people, including 19 children. In the nearly two months since the tragedy, we’ve learned that nearly 400 members of law enforcement rushed to the scene, yet it took more than an hour for the shooter to be confronted. Rather than question how the police ended up with such a clusterf*ck on their hands, lawmakers have instead offered up all sorts of utterly stupid reasons for why the shooting occurred (Texas congressman blamed those “dang smartphones”) and even dumber ideas on how to prevent further gun violence that don’t involve enacting stricter gun laws (senator Ted Cruz wants better “door control,” while governor Greg Abbott has barely even acknowledged the loss of life). On Tuesday, Trevor Noah reported on what might be one of the most pointless responses in the wake of the Uvalde massacre: clear backpacks.

As Noah explained, Texas authorities have completed their report on how well the Uvalde Police Department—who stopped cooperating with authorities shortly after the incident—handled the shooting. “And the report concluded that the cops, and I’m quoting here, ‘sucked ass,’” Noah said. However, the report also stated that even if the police’s response had been “flawless,” the end result would have likely been about the same because, as Noah explained, “someone armed with AR-15-style rifle can just do too much damage too fast.” So how can schools be better prepared to ward off such tragedies in the future? Well, Noah had an answer for that, too:

The solution to try and stop the next shooting is obvious. And no, don’t say it’s banning the AR-15s—that’s racist. The Constitution is very clear about who has rights in this country. It goes: Corporations, guns, children, then guns again, then the National Anthem, then women—but only women who are holding a gun. That’s pretty much it.

But apparently if you’re open-minded, there are lots of ways to stop school shootings without getting rid of guns.

As Noah shared, the Dallas Independent School District came up with one totally innovative solution: clear backpacks for students in 6th through 12th grades. Local news anchors and experts declared the move “relatively ineffective,” as there are plenty of places to hide a gun. And right around the 4:25 mark, a video shows a man who evaded the clear backpack rule by hiding what appeared to be 708 guns inside his pants. (“GODDAMN!” Noah exclaimed.)

Noah went on to explain that he’s “constantly amazed at how America’s constantly willing to get rid of everything except guns. Everything will be considered: ‘Ok, let’s get rid of normal backpacks. Everything is see-through now. Also, you know what, no more clothes for these kids. Yeah, yeah. They could be hiding the guns anywhere. In fact, now that I’m thinking about it, just get rid of all the kids in school. That way the guns can finally go there in peace.” Which, sadly, doesn’t far too off-base.

There’s also the simple fact that this measure completely ignores the fact that the Uvalde gunman was not a student, so wouldn’t have been required to wear a clear backpack in the first place. But any options that don’t involve reducing the number of guns in circulation or making it more difficult for people to obtain them seems to be a-ok by by Texas lawmakers, regardless of how many innocent people are murdered in the process.

You can watch the full segment above, beginning around the 2:50 mark.

Judd Apatow Is Teaming Up With The ‘Please Don’t Destroy’ Trio For A New Buddy Comedy About Hunting For Treasure

The internet’s favorite geeky trio (not that one) Please Don’t Destroy, has been on fire lately. The guys not only have been stealing the show on Saturday Night Live, but they also regularly go viral over their insane skits that feel right out of a millennial humor fever dream. Now, the boys have a new project: a movie!

It will be strange to see any of their content in a form longer than 3 minutes, but they have enlisted the help of Judd Apatow, so he will probably make it work! Apatow is known for his iconic early 2000s comedies like Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, as well as working with just about every other talented young comedy figure of last decade or so, which makes all of this feel right.

The movie will be written by Please Don’t Destroy, which is compiled of Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy. Apatow will produce the film, which reportedly centers on three life-long friends who become disillusioned with everyday life, so they set off to find a buried treasure on a nearby mountain. Hopefully, it’s not inspired by real life?

In addition to writing the movie, Marshall, Higgins, and Herlihy will also star in and executive produce the film. Production for the film has already begun in North Carolina, with additional cast members expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Perhaps they can use some of their new star power to get Taylor Swift on board.

50 Cent’s New Horror Movie Is So Nauseating That A Cameraman Passed Out While Filming

Last week, 50 Cent announced that he was not only producing, but also acting in a new horror movie called Skill House. The film is said to be centered on the perils of social media and it will be Directed by Josh Stolberg, who was at the helm of slasher horror flicks like Jigsaw and Spiral. The thing is, according to a tweet sent by Stolberg, Skill House is not only a total bloodbath, it’s so gory and nauseating that a cameraman, “passed out and the camera crashed to the ground” while filming an especially bloody scene.

Stolberg’s tweet detailed the incident: “Yikes!!! We shot a kill scene last night and the camera operator became so nauseated that he passed out and the camera crashed to the ground. Had to stop down for a 1/2 hour. He’s okay now but… get ready for some crazy sh*t!”

50 Cent was clearly impressed with how his horror film is so scary, that it’s debilitating his crew and he posted about on Instagram saying, “he camera fell to the ground while filming, This sh*t is gonna be crazy for real.”

Skill House, produced by 50 Cent’s G-Unit Film & Television company, is set to be released in early 2023 according to Deadline. Besides 50, other stars include TikTok-er Ryan Hall and MMA fighter Paige VanZant.

Of 2022’s 10 Best-Selling Vinyl Albums So Far, Harry Styles Has The Only One Released This Year

A recently published report from Luminate (the US music market monitor that provides data for Billboard charts) indicates that the popularity of new music is shrinking. Meanwhile, Variety got Luminate to collect data on the best-selling albums on vinyl from the first half of 2022, and the resulting top-50 list seems to support that trend.

Harry Styles’ Harry’s House is No. 1 on the list, but it’s the only album in the top 10 that was released this year. Olivia Rodrigo’s 2021 album Sour comes in at second, Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid M.A.A.D City (2012) is third, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors (1977) is fourth, and Tyler The Creator’s Call Me If You Get Lost (2021) is fifth. After Harry’s House, the next album on the list that was released in 2022 is Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Unlimited Love, which sits at No. 12.

Elsewhere, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon is No. 15, while The Weeknd’s Dawn FM is No. 22 and Drake’s Take Care is No. 47, both albums representing the Canadian artists’ only appearances on the chart. Britney Spears Praises ‘Freaking God’ Michelle Pfeiffer For Being In The ‘Hottest Scene’ In Movie History

Batman Returns is not only the weirdest superhero movie ever made — it also features the “hottest scene” in cinema history. That’s according to Britney Spears, at least, who took to Instagram to share her appreciation for Michelle Pfeiffer’s iconic performance as Selina Kyle / Catwoman.

“I feel like she’s the most charming… sexy… and alluring woman… this scene is probably the hottest scene I’ve ever seen in my life,” Spears wrote about the moment in the 1992 film where Selina makes her Catwoman costume. “Of course, @michellepfeifferofficial whom I’ve never met is the character… she is sick in this movie in the most conventional way possible!!!”

The pop star praised Pfeiffer’s Catwoman for giving “hell a whole new meaning… I respect that… there’s been a lot of remakes since then well damn tons, but honestly I don’t think anyone can come even close to that scene alone.”

Spears doesn’t think Pfeiffer has any idea who she is (she does), despite being one of the most famous people on the planet, “but I just want to let her know a silly girl from the South has always thought she was a freaking God and I have so much respect for her it’s kind of insane!!! Thank you for doing your craft in such a beautiful way,” she wrote.

I feel the same way as Spears, but about this scene from Batman Returns.

What Can We Take Away From The Kings’ Offseason And Summer League Showing?

I never fully know what I should or shouldn’t take away from NBA Summer League. Sometimes, a player’s improvement or impending breakout sticks out like a neon sign in a noir film, bashing you in the head with an emphatic “HERE I COME LEAGUE.” At other points, subtle shifts can slide under the radar — Cole Anthony, for example, struggled mightily during the 2021 Summer League and then looked like a borderline All-Star for the first few months of the season.

As with most things, I hedge and find myself somewhere in the middle, but Keegan Murray’s performance in Las Vegas has me rethinking things. Taking home Summer League MVP honors after averaging 23.3 points and 7.3 rebounds on 50/40/80.8 splits ain’t bad! While not comparing the two in terms of archetype or upside, Murray did his best Scottie Barnes impression, showing a verve as a shot creator in a way that I didn’t foresee this early in the NBA.

This seemingly came out of nowhere. While scouting Murray in the lead-up to the Draft, I had concerns about his ability to ever create offense for his teammates. The shot creation and versatility he brings at his size was never in question, but actually creating separation downhill was. Murray’s a pretty upright athlete with a high base, and while he could rip off some solid dribble moves out of a triple threat, it rarely resulted in north/south leverage.

This was a regularity from Murray at Iowa this past season: struggle to create separation or gain advantage with his dribble.
So when this happened early in Summer League, I was pretty impressed.

A few and-ones and a bully drive to the rim may not seem like all that much to applaud, but this felt like a night and day shift to me. He’s not getting all the way to the rim every time, but the pick-up point for Murray on drives is a good bit deeper than was typical at Iowa. With his touch and ability to finish through contact, any sort of handle or burst improvements could drastically expand his offensive upside as a play finisher and shot creator, as well as opening some doors to make live dribble playmaking reads.

I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but I feel, in retrospect, that I was too low on Murray’s ability to improve as a ball-handler. I normally am pretty low on a player’s ability to significantly increase their handle: it’s one thing to tighten it, but to find counters and viable combos that weren’t there before is not something I typically expect to happen. Player development is awesome, because it isn’t linear and players like Barnes and Murray make me scratch my head and throw my hands up in the air with a smile on my face.

I mean come on, how can you not chuckle at this?

We’re witnessing a budding shot creator test the waters, and that’s one of the most fun things in basketball. With that extra shift in his handle, Murray flexed an even deeper ability to create his own shot. He nailed step-backs and shots off of movement, getting into his bag from the mid-range, as well. Murray took less than a floater per game during his sophomore year at Iowa, and then started to break in some deep range floaters in Vegas that looked pretty good.

Testing more of that in-between game with his more refined handle is incredibly enticing when thinking about his scoring upside. The pacing and tempo are still a work in progress, as some of his drives can feel a bit on edge, but there’s real intrigue here.

I’d thought of this watching Murray at Iowa and can’t remember who I’d initially seen posit this on Twitter, but there are real shades (re: not a direct comp, there are similarities) of Danny Granger in Murray. Both are combo forwards with some very good areas of athleticism, but a few that also hold them back from being more true threes: burst and lateral quickness. They eat on easy looks that they manifest for themselves with good footwork and intuitiveness within the offense. The shot creation itself feels so similar as well, with that little bit of stiffness, but also suddenness in short areas that makes them adept at getting to one or two dribble combination pull-ups, side-steps, and step-backs.

I still would bet the house that Murray never carries primary usage, but along with his instincts and activity as a help defender, the Sacramento Kings have a player who I’d estimate to have a positive impact as a rookie and likely starter, and someone who could become a legit starting forward with star upside as the shot creation, handle, and half-court guile burgeons.

I think Jaden Ivey is going to be a star, and potentially a primary option and lead ball-handler someday, but given where the Kings are at, are headed, and what their history is, I get picking Murray. This isn’t just “Kangz gonna Kangz,” and it should not take Summer League to recognize that. He brings a great deal to be excited about while improving the present of the team, as well. That’s a difficult needle to thread. Sacramento hasn’t made the playoffs since I was in second grade. I’m 25 years old now! Murray was better than he got credit for when drafted, and based on Summer League, it’s hard not to be excited about how things are trending with him.

Murray was not the only King that made me raise my eyebrows as I watched them in Las Vegas. The offense run at Summer League embodied some of the handoff based motion principles that made them exciting immediately after they traded for Domantas Sabonis.

Damian Jones (who balled out to the tune of 13 points and six boards on 72.3 percent true shooting from March onward) departed in free agency. While second year big Neemias Queta had an erratic SL as a DHO operator and decision-maker, there were really positive glimpses of a dynamic hub who sets solid screens, gets players open, and can operate from the slots in a variety of actions. Having a player to mimic what Sabonis runs, of course to a lesser degree, could be very significant for establishing offensive continuity throughout lineups, a struggle for Sacramento last season.

I love the way Queta shifts after hand-offs. He’ll certainly have to be careful with it against heady defenders who try to draw a foul on a moving screen, but Queta is fairly good at toeing the line of legality as a screener.

It seems like a small thing, but opening himself into a potential roll and into the oncoming defender makes himself a target that his own defender has to worry about while also causing the chaser to run into a screen, fight over an extra barrier, or force the defense to switch an action altogether. If they do that, he can slip. If they switch, can he attack a mismatch? It’s a viable question now, but one worth finding out more on in the regular season. This is good stuff when searching for a capable bench big.

Let’s highlight one more guy: Keon Ellis dove for loose balls, shed screens like prime Dwight Freeney, and was a pest at the point of attack for ball-handlers. All of these are expected parts of the Keon Ellis experience.

I was pretty surprised how much offense they actually ran through Ellis, and what happens after a closeout is still a work in progress. Having said that, the shooting is for real, while he is a quality all-around defender. Ellis has a real spot in next year’s rotation, in my opinion, especially as they look to bolster what was a shoddy defense last season.

I’m not entirely sure how the pieces all fit together, but this Kings team will be better next season. I can see the vision between De’Aaron Fox and Sabonis, playing Fox more as a primary scorer than primary facilitator, using his speed in conjunction with Sabonis’ playmaking and dynamic screening to open the playbook and get funky while still being effective. I’m not at all worried about the offense between the two if Mike Brown leans into the funk: Fox averaged 28.9 points and 6.8 assists in 15 games after the Sabonis trade last season on 58.4 percent true shooting and 36 percent from deep on six attempts per game. The shooting and improvement in off-ball activity will certainly be key.

Adding in complimentary handlers and scorers in Kevin Huerter and Malik Monk moves the needle for me, but how much so is largely rooted in Fox’s two-way play. His defense has been excessively poor the past few seasons, which is a major disappointment considering how engaged he was as a defender out of the gates with Sacramento. Most players with defensive issues aren’t as much about effort as it gets made out to be, but Fox’s drawbacks are pretty squarely due to lack of engagement and attentiveness on that end. That needs to change this year, and with a coach known for his emphasis on building a defense, I would fully expect that regression to the mean.

The Kings will need to play more aggressive with Sabonis closer to the level or in a short drop to contain the ball. My guess would be that Davion Mitchell starts to emphasize the team’s renewed defensive presence, and his offensive strides were in direct correlation with more on-ball reps and ability to establish a rhythm in game. Ellis adds to that potential defensive baseline at the point of attack with Murray’s size and activity adding in positivity on backline rotations.

Will the defense be a top-10 unit? Heck no, but considering where Sacramento has been in recent years, just getting out of the bottom-10 in the rankings and being consistently active is a win in my book. This team will undoubtedly have holes in a playoff scheme, but I don’t care. When you haven’t made the playoffs since the George W. Bush administration, let’s focus on getting there first. The offense has the power to be more potent, there’s more talent throughout the roster. Young players with positive value now and moving forward will play a vital role, and Luke Walton is not head coach.

Basically, I’m excited about what the team is building. Basketball fans pretty universally clowned Kings 40 wins guy, and while I do think that is a rather optimistic win total, it’s not out of the realm of possibilities after this offseason.

Watching this UK meteorologist interview next to a scene from ‘Don’t Look Up’ is chilling

The U.K. has officially shattered its all-time high-temperature record in the heat wave that’s sweeping across Europe. On July 19, the Associated Press reported that the U.K. Met Office weather agency had registered a provisional reading of 40.3 C (104.5 F). The previous record set in 2019 was 38.7 C (101.7 F), nearly three degrees cooler.

For context, normal high temps in the U.K. in July hover around 20 C (high 60s to low 70s F).

Everyone knew the heat wave was coming. In the week prior, social media was filled with tips for staying cool—both genuine and joking—as well as far too many comments writing off Brits as wimps for not being able to handle the heat. As a British TikTok user explained during last year’s heat wave, the British Isles do not have the infrastructure for 90 or 100-degree temperatures. Their buildings are designed to retain heat, not repel it. Air conditioning is rare. Humidity makes the heat even more oppressive. And people simply aren’t physically conditioned for it, accustomed as their bodies are to moderate temperatures.

Heat waves are serious and dangerous. Meteorologists warned that even this short wave would lead to deaths. Axios has reported that more than 1,900 have died in Spain and Portugal from extreme heat in the past couple of weeks. Now that the heat has hit northern Europe, we’ll see the toll from there over the coming weeks.

Climate scientists have also warned us for years that unchecked climate change would lead to more extreme weather events, such as more frequent and severe storms, wildfires, droughts and temperature fluctuations. Sure, there have been heat waves in the past, but not as extreme as this and not breaking records as frequently as they have been in recent years.

Climate change is already here, we’re seeing the impact of it already and some people are still in denial. Case in point: A startling exchange on British television between an anchor and a meteorologist.

Ben Phillips shared the segment paired up with a famous scene from “Don’t Look Up” in which Jennifer Lawrence’s character is trying to get the interviewers to understand the gravity of what she was saying, only to be met with a disturbingly light-hearted brush-off. The comparison is chilling. Watch:

People responded with some predictable “We’re doomed” commentary, but really we should see this clip as a wake-up call. We need to understand that there will be people in positions of power and influence who will attempt to downplay the seriousness of what we face as a planet, but that doesn’t mean they will succeed in convincing the masses. If anything, this clip perfectly demonstrates how climate change denial is so obviously absurd as to be totally dismissible.

We’re not helpless here. We have a voice and we have a vote, and we need to use them to influence the people in power to take meaningful action to mitigate climate change. Easier said than done, of course, but the alternative is as unthinkable as the meteor hurtling toward the earth in “Don’t Look Up.” Only in that case, solutions were harder to find than with climate change. We know what needs to be done. We just have to find the collective will to do it.

Genesis Owusu Shares ‘GTFO’ Ahead Of Some Very High-Profile Tour Stops

Still riding the awesome wave of his ARIA 2021 Australian Album Of The Year award for Smiling With No Teeth, Genesis Owusu is proving himself to be a surging creator with an imaginative mind that we’re just starting to scratch the surface of. The debut album feels like the tip of the iceberg for the rapper and Owusu has delivered a new track today in the menacing, choral “GTFO,” ahead of a big summer of concerts.

“Singing hymns to a God that I abandoned. And spit in my hand and it told me it’s a blessing,” he sings in the song’s rhythmic opening spoken word. There’s a backing choir humming underneath the track as Owusu waxes on pushing back against forces trying to eradicate folks towards the margins of society. In the video, directed by Uncle Friendly’s Rhett Wade-Ferrell, Owusu is driven to Jack Torrance-like madness chasing an escaped cockroach.

“There are many people like Roach. Strugglers, doing whatever they can to get through hell and high water,” Owusu explained in a statement. “Bankruptcy, depression, sickness; God himself can try to stand in the way, but a struggler has to keep struggling. And a Roach has to keep Roaching. Even when it’s told to GTFO.”

“GTFO” precedes a number of high profile upcoming tour stops for Owusu. Things kick off next week with performances at music festivals like Australia’s Splendour In The Grass and Lollapalooza in Chicago. Then Owusu will be the supporting act on tours for Glass Animals, Khruangbin, and Tame Impala. His live set is an unshakeable thrill and one you’ll want to catch this summer. Check out all of Genesis Owusu’s tour dates here.

Whoops, Trump’s Hand-Picked Candidate For Arizona Governor Apparently Has A History Of Anti-Trump Facebook Posts

Things just got awkward in Arizona’s gubernatorial race, and for once, it’s not because of Meghan McCain. (Yet.) Republican primary candidate Kari Lake has been riding high with an endorsement from Donald Trump. However, that situation just hit a notable speed bump thanks to Fox News uncovering an anti-Trump post on Lake’s Facebook account. The now-MAGA candidate made the post shortly before Trump’s 2017 inauguration where she urged people to use the hashtag #NotMyPresident.

According to Fox News, Lake quickly deleted the post after being asked for a statement:

The anti-Trump post from Kari Lake’s account read, “Will you be protesting the inauguration? If so, which of these suggestions will you adopt? Will you boycott TV coverage? Wear black? Donate money the ACLU, NAACP or Planned Parenthood? Use the hashtag #NotMyPresident? Will you unfollow Donald Trump?”

In an unusually subdued response, Meghan McCain, who’s been locked in a vicious feud with Lake, latched on to the Fox News report by simply tweeting “Fake Lake” along with a link to the article. During her campaign, Lake has taken several shots at the McCain family’s hold on Arizona politics.

The Arizona primary race has also turned into yet another front in the ongoing civil war gripping the GOP. While Trump has endorsed Lake, Mike Pence and Arizona Governor Doug Ducey have both backed her opponent Karrin Taylor Robson in yet another sign that the Republican Party is looking to move past Trump. The former president is reportedly losing ground to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis who is shaping up to be the preferred candidate for the top of the ticket in 2024.
