Alvvays Questions If It Gets ‘Easy On Your Own’ On Their New Song

Ahead of their upcoming third album, Blue Rev, Alvvays has released a new song. On “Easy On Your Own,” the band’s lead vocalist Molly Rankin finds herself asking if life gets “easier on your own,” at what seems to be a pivotal point in her life.

She opens the song, singing, “I dropped out of college / Education’s a dull knife / If you don’t believe in the lettered life / Then maybe this is our only try.” Near the end of the song, she sings, “I waited so long for you/ Wasted some of the best years of my life/ And I wanted to see it through this time.”

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Rankin opened up about her creative process and how she builds her own worlds around each album.

“I find it really fun to make these tiny little movies in my mind,” she said. “I’m a pretty sensitive person, so I feel a lot of feelings, and I try and channel that into the little scenarios that I make. But I don’t feel like my life is all that wild or exciting. To me, it’s more entertaining to create a different universe.”

Blue Rev is out 10/7 via Polyvinyl. Pre-order it here.

Steve Lacy, Kanye West, And Lil Uzi Vert First Collaboration Together Was Getting Matching Tattoos

A month ago, Kanye West anointed California crooner Steve Lacy “one of the most inspiring people on the planet,” bringing some much deserved attention and praise to Lacy’s new album, Gemini Rights. Obviously, Kanye’s blessing has been a godsend — no pun intended — for many younger artists on the come-up over the years, even if those artists are no longer on speaking terms with the mercurial producer. However, for now, at least, West and Lacy have sealed their bond — alongside Lil Uzi Vert, no less — by getting matching, mismatched tattoos. Lacy posted a pic on Instagram:

To save you the trouble of zooming in, the bicep tattoos all read, “We here forever technically.” The final word is in a different font, metaphorically marking all three artists’ quick-change tendencies; they’re never just one thing. The artist is Los Angeles-based tattooer Mez Afram, whose Instagram is full of straightforward, unadorned designs like butterflies, big cats, and scorpions. Meanwhile, the woman snapping the shot for the three artists is Lauren Pisciotta, a music manager who now works as Kanye’s assistant and has since made the jump to OnlyFans.

Jumping back to Steve Lacy for a moment, the newly-minted star-in-the-making recently announced his upcoming Give You The World Tour, which starts in October, hits 27 cities, and concludes in his hometown on November 11 at the Greek Theatre.

Marcus Mumford Sings About Childhood Sexual Abuse, Which He Never Told Anybody About, On ‘Cannibal’

A month ago, Marcus Mumford shared a new solo song called “Cannibal” (the one with the Stephen Spielberg-directed video). While the song’s intense lyrics seemed personal (like the opening line, “I can still taste you, and I hate it / That wasn’t a choice in the mind of a child and you knew it”), it turns out they were more so than we realized: Mumford now says the song is about being sexually abused as a child.

Mumford made the reveal in a new GQ profile, saying of the incident that happened when he was six years old, “Like lots of people — and I’m learning more and more about this as we go and as I play it to people — I was sexually abused as a child. Not by family and not in the church, which might be some people’s assumption. But I hadn’t told anyone about it for 30 years.”

He also spoke about playing the song for his mother, who later came back and asked what the song was about, at which point she learned about the abuse for the first time. Mumford said, “[My mother said,] ‘Can I ask what that song’s about?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s about the abuse thing.’ She was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ So once we get through the trauma of that moment for her, as a mother, hearing that and her wanting to protect and help and all that stuff, it’s objectively f*cking hilarious to tell your mom about your abuse in a f*cking song, of all things.”

This news adds another layer to a quote from a newsletter Mumford shared in July: “In January last year I set myself the task of trying to write some songs and just follow where they led. When I showed the first two to the lads in the band, we all agreed it was probably a story I had to tell on my own.”

The Penultimate Episode Of ‘Better Call Saul’ Is One Of The Biggest TV Gut-Punches Ever

Effective storytelling changes you. It can affect your entire body: leaving you shaking, restless, crying, filled with thoughts and feeling but unable to speak. It’s the kind of storytelling that makes you feel a part of it, like it happened to you, or it happened to someone close to you. Some examples include Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite, Mad Men’s “The Suitcase,” when Anna Draper, the only person who really knew the real Don Draper/Dick Whitman dies, Ned Stark’s beheading in the first season of Game of Thrones (the show was very good before it was very bad!), and Breaking Bad’s season four episode “Crawl Space,” when Walter White laughs maniacally underneath his house, making the full transition into a monster.

“Waterworks,” Better Call Saul’s penultimate episode, accomplishes this with a polished cruelty that is incredibly true to its characters. After watching the episode live I felt a lump in my throat. I felt like I vomited out all of my essential organs. It depicts events – and reactions to events – that are not necessarily relatable, but the emotions are.

From the very beginning, Better Call Saul has been building up to this gut-wrenching episode in which Kim Wexler finally breaks down beyond her hard exterior and Jimmy McGill pushes his moral limits. After all this time, the show’s brutal slow burn has exploded into an emotional display of fireworks. The series has never necessarily been a good time, but it always had a tinge of lightness and some comedic relief until now. In the end, Better Call Saul is, in fact, perhaps the most devastating love story ever told.

In “Waterworks” we see Kim Wexler’s black and white world. It’s even more dreary than the black and white world of Gene, which we’ve seen glimpses of throughout the seasons. This is also our first time seeing Kim after she leaves Jimmy following Howard Hamlin’s death. Years later, Kim is ridden with guilt over her indirect involvement in Hamlin’s death. To punish herself, she’s living a suburban nightmare. She lives in Florida, she works a dreadfully boring job, has dreadfully boring co-workers, a dreadfully boring boyfriend, and settles for Miracle Whip instead of mayonnaise (this might be the worst thing, honestly). Kim, who has dyed her hair dark brown to match her mood, does not think she deserves anything better than bad bangs and dry conversations, about Florida college sports teams, ice cream flavors, or The Amazing Race.

In contrast, Jimmy McGill’s reaction to Howard’s gruesome death and the dissolution of his relationship with Kim is essentially becoming a new person in the Saul Goodman. In “Waterworks,” we see Kim come to Saul’s now constitution-themed, faux-columned office to sign their divorce papers. “Have a nice life, Kim,” he says. Jimmy is hiding from his pain by pretending he doesn’t care. As Gene, Jimmy is hiding from the pain of losing Kim – which he pushed under the rug and clearly never got over – by punishing an innocent man.

Later in the episode, Kim reaches her breaking point. She’s traveled to Albuquerque to confess her involvement in Howard’s death and unseemly reputation. On a bus on the way to the airport, she tries not to cry, but it’s finally too much. Kim unleashes all the pain we’ve seen her endure throughout the entire series on public transformation (Rhea Seehorn Emmy please). Kim has always been good at hiding her emotions behind her professionalism: the only person she’s really let loose around is Jimmy, and that was in a very different way. Seeing Kim finally let herself go after seeing her resist it and punish herself for so long was excruciating but cathartic.

While Kim reaches her breaking point with a little public cry, Jimmy reaches his breaking point by almost crossing his own line. Jimmy will do anything for a little scam and to get what he wants (or what his clients want), but he has never gone so far as to commit murder. He almost does in “Waterworks” twice, after being emotionally wrecked by his tense phone call with Kim early in the episode. All Jimmy has ever wanted is for someone to be proud of him, and learning that an unimpressed Kim thinks he should turn himself in turned him to a darker side than he’s ever been before – not even as Saul Goodman on Breaking Bad.

“Waterworks” is one of the darkest, saddest, gut-punches in television history. It’s not punishing its characters for their actions, but showing us how different people punish themselves. Kim Wexler punished herself with her own personal nightmare: Florida, a boring job, sad sandwiches. Her life is miracle whip instead of mayonnaise. Jimmy, however, is punishing others instead of himself and getting so sloppy in the process that he’s guaranteed to get caught, which at this point, seems intentional.

‘Justified: City Primeval’ Has Been Disrupted Again After Someone Threw An ‘Incendiary Device’ Towards The Set

The Justified revival series cannot catch a break. After the Chicago production of Justified: City Primeval shut down three weeks ago following a vehicular gun fight that somehow made it past the set’s barricades where star Timothy Olyphant was filming, the cops are back on the scene again after someone reportedly threw an incendiary device at the set.

According to local news station, ABC7, shorty after 10 PM on Monday, an individual reportedly lit the device and threw it towards the set where filming was taking place. Fortunately, the device did not explode and no one was hurt. At the time of this writing, no suspects are in custody, but Chicago police are actively investigating.

This latest disruption marks the second violent incident to occur on the Justified: City Primeval set. In late July, two vehicles exchanged gunfire and crashed through the set barrier while the production was filming. Via Variety:

The crew member said, “They drove right past our U-Crane camera arm, and our crane operators were probably the closest to everything while these people were shooting at one another. The U-Crane had to drive and take a left to get away from them.”

The crew member also described how one PA, who was across the street near a bus stop, had “moved out of the way just in time because a bullet hit the glass of the bus stop and shattered the glass.”

Following the gun battle, production shut down for several days as the cast and crew took a long weekend to recover from the harrowing event.

Nicki Minaj Hints That Drake Is Secretly A Billionaire

Young Money Cash Money Billionaires may in fact be true for one of the members of the YMCMB collective: According to Nicki Minaj, who reunited with her Young Money labelmates Lil Wayne and Drake during the latter’s October World Festival in Toronto last weekend, the “Way 2 Sexy” hitmaker may be a billionaire.

In a video shared to Minaj’s Instagram Story yesterday, she is seen boarding a private jet. In the clip, she says, “This is what happens when you got a rich — I’m sorry, a very rich, rich, rich, rich — Canadian friend… who is the only billionaire that I know that don’t want people to know he a billionaire.”

While she didn’t refer to anyone by name, fans immediately assumed the “Canadian friend” was Drake. Later that day, fans immediately caught wind of Minaj liking a tweet reading, “Shoutout to @Drake for being a billionaire too, even though you ain’t want no one to know.”

If this is true, Drake is among one of very few rappers in the coveted billionaires club, alongside Jay-Z, who reached billionaire status in 2019 by way of his $75 million catalog, as well as his stakes in Tidal, Uber, Armand de Brignac, and D’Usse. Kanye West attained billionaire status in 2020, mostly in part to his Yeezy fashion empire. He even surpassed Jay and has reached a net worth of $2 billion.

Minaj is set to drop her much anticipated new single, “Super Freaky Girl,” this Friday.

Steve Martin’s Life Story Is Getting The Documentary Treatment From A24 And Apple TV+

Steve Martin will be the subject of a two-part documentary from A24 and Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville. The deep dive into the actor and comedian’s life will stream on Apple TV. While there’s no official release date or even a title, the Martin documentary is currently in production and he seems pretty excited about what the filmmaking team has already found in their research.

Via The Hollywood Reporter:

“It’s somebody else’s take,” Martin tells THR of the process. “They found a lot of archival stuff. “They found a photo of my father in 1944 in Germany, touring Our Town with the USO.”

For as well known as he is, Martin hasn’t done that much mining of his personal story. He published one memoir, Born Standing Up, about his years as a stand-up comedian in 2007. A book about his years in film, Number One Is Walking: My Life in the Movies and Other Diversions, is due in November and, as Martin describes it, is a collection of anecdotes and illustrations.

Martin is enjoying a career resurgence thanks to Only Murders in the Building, which he not only stars in, but helped write and create. The Hulu series also stars Martin Short and Selena Gomez and has become a fan favorite on the streaming network. The second season is currently airing and has spawned a hit single “Angel in Flip-Flops,” and surprisingly, not because of Gomez. Martin is actually the pop sensation this time around, and the track even got the music video treatment.

Only Murders in the Building is available for streaming on Hulu.

Fox News’ Jesse Watters Accusing The FBI Of ‘Planting…Doctored Evidence’ To Frame Trump Is Perhaps The Clearest Indication Yet That Trump Is Screwed

In the wake of the FBI’s raid on Mar-a-Lago earlier this week, the Donald Trump stans at Fox News didn’t quite know what to do with themselves or how to cover this unprecedented bit of news—or whether to talk about it at all. So some of them, like Jesse Watters went straight to claiming it’s all a conspiracy theory.

On Tuesday night, the same clown who once brought DJ Pauly D from The Jersey Shore on as an inflation expert told Fox News viewers that the FBI showed up at the former president’s Palm Beach residence in order to plant evidence against him. “These are bloodthirsty savages who want to see you humiliated and violated,” Watters claimed, according to Media Matters. “This is a threat to anybody who opposes them. Look what we can do to you. We can even storm into your president’s home and take whatever we want.”

Yet, he didn’t stop there. Without offering a shred of even the tiniest bit of evidence — unless getting Lindsey Graham to say “yeah” counts as proof — Watters suggested that the FBI’s visit was all about planting evidence on a twice-impeached president who is currently under investigation by multiple entities for all sorts of wrongdoing (and whose history of shady dealings is well-known and firmly documented):

They could have easily negotiated the return of documents like that without guns and warrants. What the FBI is probably doing is planting evidence, which is what they did during the Russia hoax. We also have a hunch they doctored evidence to get the warrant — again, what they did during the Russia hoax. So, this is a big fishing expedition, using anything they can against Trump to take him out of the race for 2024. Or, just hang this dark cloud over his head like they did with the Mueller investigation. Remember, they knew for two years there was no crime but they tried to frame the president for obstructing a crime he didn’t commit? They crossed a very serious line with this and they’re never coming back. And everybody involved in this needs to be prosecuted for misconduct, disbarred and have their pension stripped. And that’s just the beginning.

But he wasn’t done there! Watters also claimed that going after Trump was a sexual fetish of the Left.

He also claimed that every American feels “violated” by the raid (they do not).

At this point, it feels like Watters and his Fox cohorts are just emptying the Cry Wolf bag and hoping that something sticks. You can watch even more of his hot air from last night below, courtesy of Media Matters:

Ohio’s Governor Gives Dolly Parton Her Own Official Day

It seems like Dolly Parton is always doing some good, and now the state of Ohio is recognizing her for it: Governor Mike DeWine declared that in the state, August 9 is now Dolly Parton Day.

The official proclamation further outlines the reasons for the honor, reading in part, “Whereas, celebrated country music performer Dolly Parton is widely regarded not only for her achievements as a singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, but also as an actress, author, businesswoman, humanitarian and philanthropist; and whereas, among her philanthropic ventures, in 1995, she launched Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to instill a love of reading among the children of Sevier County, Tennessee, where she grew up; and whereas, Dolly soon expanded the effort and began mailing one free, age-appropriate book to children every month from birth to age 5. […] Whereas, the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Of Ohio, founded in 2019 with financial support from the Ohio General Assembly and affiliates across the state, is available in all 88 counties. Whereas, today, more than 327,000 kids in Ohio receive their free book through the program each month.”

The day was declared in preparation of Parton’s visit to the state yesterday (August 9), where she spoke at Ohio State University’s Ohio Union about her free book program. Per The Columbus Dispatch, she explained the motivation behind the program, saying, “Daddy didn’t get a chance to read and write and he was always kind of embarrassed by that. I just always felt my heart was always heavy that my Daddy felt like there was something he couldn’t do, because we thought he could do anything.”

Parton also showed off her classic wit when asked how she’d like to be remembered in 100 years, responding, “I want them to say, ‘Golly, she looks good for her age.’ But in addition to that, I just want to be a person remembered for trying to make life a little better for myself as well as everybody else.”
