Martin Short Is At His Absolute Best On ‘Only Murders in the Building’

Only Murders in the Building used to be a show about an apartment building, and now it’s all about theater. In the season two finale, Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) directs a killer reveal. Putnam was a successful Broadway director, but became most known for his biggest failure: a disastrous, dangerous, and campy adaptation of the 1984 film Splash! For the reveal, Putnam enlists the most colorful residents of the Arconia as supporting characters in the production. Given what we know about Oliver – chaos is as attached to him as he is to dips – the killer reveal is ridden with tension. Something could go wrong at any moment. But the elaborate production goes all according to plan, save for a few try-hard performances from Arconia’s quirkiest.

Throughout the series, we’ve watched the Only Murders in the Building podcast within the show better each host: Charles (Steve Martin), Mabel (Selena Gomez) and Oliver. For Oliver, the podcast has reactivated his talent, ambition, and love for the theater. By the end of the season finale, Oliver is directing a real Broadway show that does not involve any life-threatening sets (that we know of right now). But Oliver’s journey has also been quite dark: in the first season, his relationship with his son is strained due to his financial needs, and in season two, just as his relationship with the son is on the mend, Oliver learns that he is not his son’s biological father. The contrast between the camp and the drama is hard to pull off: not many actors can do both, and not many that can do it as well as Martin Short. Oliver, always the elephant in the room thanks to his uniform of a waistcoat, matching trousers and a colorful scarf, is Only Murders in the Building’s most valuable character, and Short’s performance is one of the best on television.

Following the season two finale, Hulu announced that Only Murders in the Building has been renewed for a third season, which we know, thanks to the finale, will focus even more on theater. The first season of the murder mystery series was charming, cozy, and intimate. It focused on a small, narrowly focused world, and was mostly set inside the Arconia, with a few carefully selected guest stars including Sting, Amy Ryan and Nathan Lane. In season one, the murders were truly in the building. Season two, which unraveled the mystery behind the death of Arconia co-op president Bunny Folger, in contrast, was sprawling. It expanded the world far outside the Arconia and had a seemingly endless roster of guest stars: you can now find Only Murders in the Building on the IMDB pages of Cara Delevingne and Michael Rappaport, for example. There were so many guest stars in season two, in fact, that I hardly remember why Amy Schumer was there, and Shirley Maclaine’s (absolutely perfect) scenes feel like they happened years ago. In the end, Bunny’s murder, which happened inside Mabel’s apartment, had nothing to do with the Arconia besides the fact that it happened there.

Every time the second season felt dry or meandering, Short saved the day with a simple, unexpected Adam Driver-inspired pronunciation of a word (the way Short says “theater” is a work out of art on its own). From fighting Nathan Lane in an elevator in a way only a musical theater professional would to lovingly talking about and carrying dips, Short is the heart and soul of Only Murders in the Building, so much so that it has shifted its focus to theater both in season two, and season three: the season two finale introduces Paul Rudd as an actor in Oliver’s Broadway show, and ends with his puzzling on-stage death. It has since been announced that Rudd will be in season three. No matter how clunky Only in Murders in the Building gets, and no matter how famous the guest stars, as long as it has Martin Short, it will remain one of the most comforting shows on television.

Chloe Loved An HBCU Marching Band’s Routine Set To ‘Treat Me’ During A Football Game

Like her mentor, Beyoncé, emerging pop-R&B star Chlöe is also apparently becoming a favorite of HBCU marching bands. During a Saturday night matchup between Alabama State University and Howard University for the MEAC/SWAC Classic, Alabama’s drill team the Honey Beez put on an enthusiastic, gold-clad showcase to Chlöe’s second solo single “Treat Me.” The Honey Beez twirled, twerked, tossed their matching high ponytails, and did the splits as the band turned the uptempo “Treat Me” into a blowout of epic proportions.

When Chlöe saw a clip that had been uploaded to Twitter the next day, she couldn’t contain her love for it. “Ahh, I love this!!” she wrote. “I’ve always wanted to perform my song on the field.”

“Treat Me” peaked at No. 81 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving the singer her second solo Hot 100 appearance after her solo debut “Have Mercy” managed to climb to No. 28. She later revealed that she wrote the song while going through a breakup. Its spicy video, which was inspired by Grace Jones and Janet Jackson, prompted some fans to joke that she’d doubled down on the overt sexiness of the “Have Mercy” video in response to critics who wanted her to tone it down.

You can see the Alabama State Honey Beez’s routine and Chlöe’s joyous response above.

Just Days After Her Controversial Exit From ‘Euphoria,’ Barbie Ferreira Has Already Found Her Next Role

Barbie Ferreira‘s career is clearly doing just fine without Euphoria. Mere days after announcing that she won’t be returning for Season 3 of the HBO series, which was reportedly plagued with behind-the-scenes drama, Ferreira has already locked down a new role at Amazon. The former Euphoria cast member has joined the film House of Spoils, a psychological thriller starring Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) and produced by Blumhouse Television.

Via The Hollywood Reporter:

Per Amazon, Spoils follows an ambitious chef (DeBose) who opens her first restaurant, a farm-to-table affair on a remote estate, where she battles kitchen chaos, a dubious investor, crushing self-doubts … and the powerful spirit of the estate’s previous owner, who threatens to sabotage her at every turn. Ferreira’s character is described as a hopeful but sharp-tongued sous chef, but how she figures into the plot is being kept under the cloche.

As for why Ferreira left Euphoria, the young actress saw her character, Kat, get noticeably pushed into the background in Season 2, which had a troubled production. According to reports, Ferreira allegedly stormed off set after an argument with the series’ controversial creator, Sam Levinson, which reportedly resulted in her character having less screen time.

While Ferreira has previously denied any tension with Levinson, her sudden exit from Euphoria suggests that the numerous reports of production drama during the grueling Season 2 shoot were probably more truth than rumor.

Lil Nas X Was ‘Drunk AF’ At The 2022 VMAs And Only ‘Just Realized’ He Won Awards The Morning After

Lil Nas X had a terrific night at the 2022 MTV VMAs yesterday, as he had seven nominations (tied with Jack Harlow and Kendrick Lamar for the most) and ended the show with three wins. By his own admission, the rapper apparently only processed those victories this morning, though, thanks to a number of drinks he enjoyed last night.

Sharing some photos of himself holding his trophies, Nas wrote on Twitter today, “i was drunk af last night ngl just realized i won 3 thank u vmas [crying emoji] [hearts emoji].”

Despite his state, he seemed pretty coherent alongside Jack Harlow as they accepted their Best Collaboration award for “Industry Baby,” especially considering that acceptance speeches are often a moment when excited artists are at their most flustered.

Meanwhile, he recently noted he has some stuff for fans to look forward to, saying, “I have some unexpected things, collaborations coming up. I wouldn’t want to ruin those, though. […] I do have something very special coming really soon around the time of my tour starting. That’s something I’m super excited about music-wise.” As for that tour, he noted, “Without giving it away, all I can say is it’s more of a show than it is a concert.”

All The Best New Music From This Week That You Need To Hear

Keeping up with new music can be exhausting, even impossible. From the weekly album releases to standalone singles dropping on a daily basis, the amount of music is so vast it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks. Even following along with the Uproxx recommendations on a daily basis can be a lot to ask, so every Monday we’re offering up this rundown of the best new music this week.

This week saw DJ Khaled teaming up with everybody in the industry and Britney Spears having a major career moment. Yeah, it was a great week for new music. Check out the highlights below.

For more music recommendations, check out our Listen To This section, as well as our Indie Mixtape and Pop Life newsletters. Also find our Uproxx HQ Spotify playlist, which is updated weekly with the best new music, at the end of this post.

DJ Khaled — “God Did” Feat. Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, John Legend, and Fridayy

DJ Khaled did that thing he does where he wrangles every famous musician currently working and put them all on one album. The new LP is called God Did and an early standout is the title track. The defining characteristic here is Jay-Z’s four-minute verse that Khaled thinks is one of Jay’s best ever and fans agree.

Elton John and Britney Spears — “Hold Me Closer”

After weeks of rumors, eventual confirmations, and scant pieces of info, Britney Spears has finally made her post-conservatorship music comeback, joining Elton John on “Hold Me Closer,” a new take on John’s classic “Tiny Dancer.” Similar to John’s Dua Lipa-featuring hit from last summer (“Cold Heart”), “Hold Me Closer” is a smooth disco-influenced re-work that brings the song into modern times. Given the context, it’s a track that’s having an effect on people, especially Drew Barrymore.

JID and Earthgang — “Can’t Punk Me”

It’s been nearly four years since 2018’s DiCaprio 2, but at long last, JID is back with a new album, The Forever Story (although he did have the Spillage Village album Spilligion in 2020). Actually, there’s a bit of a Spillage Village reunion on the new JID album, as he collaborated with Earthgang on “Can’t Punk Me,” which has a great upbeat rhythm, both in the production and JID’s rapid-fire rapping.

Rema and Selena Gomez — “Calm Down”

Afrobeats favorite Rema adding some more pop appeal to his single “Calm Down” by wrangling Selena Gomez to hop on a delightful new remix. Gomez said of the tune, “I’m really excited to see the person that asked me to be on a song that I couldn’t be more honored to do. The song’s fun, I hope people like it. That’s all I want.”

Offset — “Code” Feat. Moneybagg Yo

What’s going on with Migos? Who knows! Quavo and Offset are doing their own thing together, while Offset is off making solo tunes as well, his latest being a Moneybagg Yo collaboration “Code.” Uproxx’s Armon Sadler notes of the track, “The two rap with a fury over the uptempo beat, with Offset in particular branding a smooth Auto-Tune while Moneybagg employs his usual brooding vocals.”

Rina Sawayama — “Phantom”

In the lead-up to Hold The Girl (which is out this week), Sawayama has shown off her range with pre-album singles. Her latest, “Phantom,” is a story-telling pop epic that sees Sawayama putting both her lyricism and vocal abilities at the forefront.

Twice — “Talk That Talk”

K-pop favorites Twice are continuing to cement themselves among the genre’s greats with their upcoming project, Between 1&2. Lead single “Talk That Talk” is a promising start, as the new tune (shared last week) is a dynamic, catchy, and engaging pop tune that goes on quite the aesthetic journey over just three minutes.

Joji — “Yukon (Interlude)”

Joji is fresh off a major career high-point, as “Glimpse Of Us” became his first top-10 single in the US this summer. Presumably, the track will appear on his just-announced new album, Smithereens. That remains uncertain as there’s no tracklist out yet, but we do know that new song “Yukon (Interlude),” an upbeat track that’s very much James Blake-ian.

DDG — “If I Want You”

DDG and Halle Bailey have been having fun lately as a couple of young folks in love, which they put on full display in DDG’s new video for “If I Want You,” a smooth new single. The clip sees the pair enjoying intimate moments in a visual that overall has plenty of steam.

The National — “Weird Goodbyes” Feat. Bon Iver

Aaron Dessner brought two of his worlds — The National and Big Red Machine — together last week on “Weird Goodbyes” a new National tune that features Bon Iver. Matt Berninger sings subtly over a mid-tempo electronic beat while Justin Vernon continues to cement his status as one of the best complementary vocalists in the game.

Eight Popular Pilsners You Need To Drink Before Summer Is Over, Ranked

While there’s no wrong time of year to enjoy a well-made, crisp pilsner, there’s no denying this beer’s appeal in the sweltering summer months. Even though summer is almost over, there are still a few weeks to pair this light, crisp, refreshing lager with sunny, warm weather.

For those who don’t know what differentiates a pilsner from a lager, let’s make it easy: in the simplest terms, all pilsners are lagers, but not all lagers are pilsners. Specifically, a pilsner is a pale lager made with bottom-fermenting yeast, pale malt, and hops, often spicy Saaz hops. Pilsners are known for their light, balanced, highly drinkable flavor and low alcohol content. While many pilsners have similar flavor profiles, there are slight differences depending on the style and where it’s from. The different styles include German pilsners, which are said to be hoppier and more bitter than others, Czech pilsners, which are sweeter, American pilsners, which are watery and subdued, and others.

To help you find the best, most flavorful pilsners to finish off the summer strong, we did the work for you. We found eight of the best pilsners available almost everywhere. Our list has a nice mix of European and American craft pilsners. All are crisp, all are refreshing, and all deserve a place in your fridge.

8) Bitburger Pilsner

Bitburger Pilsner
Bitburger

ABV: 4.8%

Average Price: $6.75 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

The Beer:

A classic German pilsner, Bitburger has been brewed for almost 200 years. Adhering to German purity laws, this crisp, light, refreshing beer is made in the traditional way using classic ingredients. There’s a reason it’s the most popular draft beer in Germany.

Tasting Notes:

This beer’s nose is pretty mild with some bread-like malts, light grains, and floral hops. Really, that’s about all I can place. For a pilsner, there’s a surprising malt presence as well as more herbal hops. The finish is crisp, dry, and slightly bitter. Overall, this beer is as close to fizzy water as beer gets.

Bottom Line:

Bitburger is crisp and refreshing, but that’s about it. It doesn’t have much flavor and tastes like someone made hop-flavored seltzer water.

7) Radeberger Pilsner

Radeberger Pilsner
Radeberger

ABV: 4.8%

Average Price: $8.99 for a six-pack

The Beer:

Touted as the “inventor of German Pilsner culture”, Radeberger is one of the most recognizable classic pilsners in the world. Brewed the same way since 1872, it’s known for its simple, crisp, clean, balanced flavor.

Tasting Notes:

The nose is surprisingly light with aromas of cracker-like malts, and some herbal, floral hops. But that’s about it. The palate has more cracker malts, sweet grains, and Noble, floral hops. And, while it’s crisp and refreshing, it doesn’t have much going on in the flavor department. Decent, but fairly boring.

Bottom Line:

This beer tastes exactly like it’s supposed to. And while that’s fine in terms of a classic, crisp, crushable pilsner, it’s fairly unexciting in terms of overall palate.

6) Troegs Sunshine Pils

Troegs Sunshine Pils
Troegs

ABV: 4.5%

Average Price: $11.50 for a six-pack

The Beer:

Brewed with Saaz hops, lager yeast, and 2-row barley, this crisp, thirst-quenching pilsner gets much of its flavor from a secondary fermentation. The result is a clean, bright, flavorful American craft interpretation of the iconic beer style.

Tasting Notes:

Biscuity malts, herbal, earthy hops, lemon zest, and light fruit esters. And while this nose was fairly potent, the actual palate with a little lighter than expected. There are more biscuit-like malts, lemongrass, and light hops, but that’s it. The finish is a little drier and more bitter than I’d prefer.

Bottom Line:

Troegs Sunshine Pilsner isn’t a bad beer. It’s just a little light in the flavor department and more bitter than I’d like in an easy-drinking pilsner.

5) Victory Prima Pils

Victory Prima Pils
Victory

ABV: 5.3%

Average Price: $9.99 for a six-pack

The Beer:

Brewed with Pilsner malts and Tettnang, Hallertau, Spalt, and Saaz hops, this is as close to traditional German-style beer America has to offer. It’s known for its malty flavor profile littered with floral, bright Noble hops.

Tasting Notes:

Bread, fresh-cut grass, herbal hops, and light citrus rind ring in this beer’s nose. The palate follows suit with more bready, crackery malts, sweet grains, more grass, and slightly resinous, floral hops. The finish is dry and gently bitter.

Bottom Line:

If you’re a fan of Noble hops and you enjoy German pilsners, but you want to try an Americanized version, Victory Prima Pils is for you. It’s not perfect but it does the trick.

4) Firestone Walker Pivo Pils

Firestone Walker Pivo Pils
Firestone Walker

ABV: 5.3%

Average Price: $10 for a six-pack

The Beer:

This popular take on the pilsner style is brewed with Carafoam and Pilsners malts. It gets its herbal, earthy, floral flavor from the addition of Spalter Select, Tradition and Saphir hops in the kettle. It gets added flavor from dry-hopping with even more Saphir hops.

Tasting Notes:

Right away, you can tell this beer is different than the others on this list. Immediately, there’s a ton of floral, resinous hops aroma. This is followed by caramel malts, citrus zest, and some light, peppery spices. It definitely draws you in and asks you to take a sip. Drinking it reveals even more piney, earthy, herbal hops presence that pairs well with bready malts, lemongrass, and a dry, lightly spicy finish.

Bottom Line:

Firestone Walker Pivo Pils is a really exceptional beer. The only reason it didn’t land higher on this list is because its dank, piney backbone is a little much for traditional pilsner drinkers.

3) Pilsner Urquell

Pilsner Urquell
Pilsner Urquell

ABV: 4.4%

Average Price: $9.99 for a six-pack

The Beer:

If you didn’t know it already, Pilsner Urquell was the world’s first pale lager. It’s the beer that spawned every other pilsner throughout the world. This Czech-made, Saazy hops-based pilsner is still as crisp and refreshing as it was when it was created back in 1842.

Tasting Notes:

Classic pilsner aromas of bready malts, citrus zest, sweet grains, and floral, earthy, herbal hops meet your nose before your first sip. The palate is loaded with Pilsner malt, sweet grains, Noble hops, fruit ester, and citrus peels. The finish is sublimely crisp, lightly hoppy, and dry.

Bottom Line:

Pilsner Urquell is the kind of beer that proves that you don’t need to change a good thing. It’s simple, clean, crisp, and perfect. And it’s been that way since the 1800s.

2) Oskar Blues Mama’s Little Yella

Oskar Blues Mama's Little Yella
Oskar Blues

ABV: 4.7%

Average Price: $9.99 for a six-pack

The Beer:

This year-round, Bohemian-style pilsner was crafted to taste like the traditional beers made for centuries in the Czech Republic. Brewed with Pilsner and Honey malts as well as Saaz and Aramis hops, it’s known for its refreshing, balanced flavor.

Tasting Notes:

Complex aromas of earthy, herbal, floral hops move into bready, cracker-like malts, fruit esters, citrus zest, and gentle spice on the nose. Drinking it only adds to the experience with more light pepper, caramel malts, freshly-baked bread, floral hops, and a nice, sweet, dry finish that leaves you craving more.

Bottom Line:

This Bohemian-style pilsner ticks all the boxes when it comes to clean, crisp, sweet, refreshing summery pilsners. It’s really difficult to beat.

1) North Coast Scrimshaw

North Coast Scrimshaw
North Coast

ABV: 4.5%

Average Price: $10.99 for a six-pack

The Beer:

For those unaware, a “scrimshaw” is an intricate carving, usually on a whale bone or walrus tusk, done by sailors in the 1800s. This beer’s name pays tribute to this form of art and is brewed with Munich malt and Hallertauer and Tettnang hops, to make a crisp, clean, full-flavored pilsner.

Tasting Notes:

Notes of sweet honey, bready malts, floral hops, fruit esters, and light citrus zest greet your nose before your first sip. The flavor is classic pilsner with hints of cracker-like malts, herbal, floral hops, light banana, and lemongrass. The finish is a mix of sweet and bitter with a nice dry ending.

Bottom Line:

North Coast Scrimshaw is a complex take on the pilsner style. Well-balanced and full-flavored, it’s the kind of beer where you find new, exciting flavors every time you drink it.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ Could Be Her First Completely Self-Written Album Since ‘Speak Now’

Yesterday (August 28) morning, it didn’t seem like Taylor Swift would have much to do with that night’s MTV VMAs beyond being nominated for some awards. That changed as the day progressed, though. First, it was rumored she would be making a surprise appearance and indeed, she showed up on the red carpet. Then, at the very end of the broadcast, she offered an even bigger shock, using an acceptance speech to announce that she’s releasing a new album on October 21.

Shortly after that, Swift posted about the album, named Midnights, online and offered a short statement on it. There’s one part of that statement that has stuck out and prompted a compelling fan theory.

In her statement, Swift describes the album as “a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams.” One fan on Reddit’s Taylor Swift subreddit speculated that due to the apparently impromptu nature by which the songs were written, this could mean Midnights is entirely self-written. If that ends up being the case, Midnights would be Swift’s first album with no credited co-writers since 2010’s Speak Now.

Also possible, however, is that Swift started writing the songs herself and later refined them with recent collaborators like Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff. It sounds like that wouldn’t be too far off from the process behind Folklore and Evermore, as Antonoff indicated when defending Swift from Damon Albarn’s songwriting jabs earlier this year, tweeting, “i’ve never met damon albarn and he’s never been to my studio but apparently he knows more than the rest of us about all those songs taylor writes and brings in. herb.”

Swing Through New York City As Kermit The Frog In A Chaotic ‘Spider-Man’ Mod

Video game mods are one of the best parts of modern gaming. A bit of a gray area, mods take an already released and developed game and let players make changes to the game’s coding so they can do things as minor as improving the graphics or as drastic as adding entirely new characters in the game. The reason it’s a gray area is that while most developers are okay with mods and see them as harmless, they can sometimes lead to harmful additions to the game that don’t match the original creator’s vision. However, sometimes players do something incredibly creative and improve a game, or bring players back to it so they can have new experiences through these mods.

Thankfully, nobody should have any problem with this latest mod for Marvel’s Spider-Man, because it definitely falls into the latter category. A new mod started making its way around that features the model for Spider-Man being replaced with the beloved and often memed, Kermit the Frog. In this mod, the hero of New York City is not your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, but your favorite singing puppet as he swings across the city defeating bad guys and jamming out to some of his favorite tunes. It’s incredible.

If you have ever wondered why it is that some fans swear by PC being the ultimate console for gaming, this would be why. The large majority of mods are PC-exclusive experiences and it’s only when games like Spider-Man reach PC that we get to experience Kermit swinging through the skies as he belts out “Sunshine.” To the many different possible copyright claims that can take down this mod, please look the other way on this one, because it’s too funny to not allow it.

Megan Thee Stallion Eyes The Rumored ‘Bring It On’ Reboot And She Already Has A Role In Mind

Megan Thee Stallion is slowly but surely building up her acting resume. In addition to appearing on P-Valley as her alter ego Tina Snow and being cast in the upcoming musical comedy Identical F*cking Twins, it was also recently revealed that she has a role in a future episode of the Marvel superhero lawyer comedy She-Hulk. Today, in a new feature in The Cut, she revealed one of her dream roles, expressing a hope to follow in the footsteps of one of the most iconic millennial characters.

“I always have wanted to be Isis,” she said, citing the character made famous by Gabrielle Union in the 2000 cheerleader comedy Bring It On. “I would be perfect for that. If they were ever to make a new Bring It On, I should be that character.” Of course, there don’t appear to be any plans to reboot the original, while the series itself continues to this day, with a seventh installment, Bring It On: Cheer or Die, coming to SYFY this year (probably on Halloween, as it takes the franchise in a new direction as a teen slasher). There is, however, a stage musical, so there’s probably still hope for Meg yet.

Aces Guard Jackie Young Won The 2022 WNBA Most Improved Player Award

The WNBA announced Monday that Las Vegas Aces guard Jackie Young has won 2022 Most Improved Player of the Year. She received 32 of 56 first-place votes, with New York Liberty guard and fellow first-time All-Star Sabrina Ionescu finishing second in the voting.

Averaging 15.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 steals, Young made her inaugural All-Star team this season. Las Vegas selected the Notre Dame product first overall in the 2019 Draft. After shooting 28.6 percent (22 of 77) beyond the arc throughout her first three years in the league, Young connected on 50 of 116 triples (43.1 percent) this season. Her growth from deep headlined a refined offensive approach for Las Vegas, who significantly upped its three-point volume and posted the WNBA’s top offensive rating in 2022.

Last week, Aces head coach Becky Hammon earned Coach of the Year, while star forward A’Ja Wilson is an MVP favorite alongside the Seattle Storm’s Breanna Stewart. The Storm and Aces continue their second-round series with Game 2 on Wednesday inside Michelob ULTRA Arena at 7 p.m.

Led by Jewell Lloyd’s 26 points and Stewart’s 24 points, fourth-seeded Seattle stole homecourt advantage from top-seeded Las Vegas with its 76-73, Game 1 victory on Sunday. Young, Hammon, Wilson and the rest of the Aces will aim to knot the best-of-five series at one game apiece with a win Wednesday.
