Fontaines DC Spies On Their Neighbors In Their ‘The Couple Across The Way’ Video

Fontaines DC has shared the video for “The Couple Across The Way,” the latest single from their album, Skinty Fia. In the video, directed by Polocho, Fontaines DC’s lead vocalist Grian Chatten sits in a windowsill playing the accordion. As he plays, he can’t help but spy on literal couples across the way.

In the beginning, Chatten witnesses an older couple arguing. Later in the video, he sees a younger, loving couple embracing each other in what seems to be their first place together.

Chatten revealed that the concept for the video was inspired by true events he witnessed with his girlfriend in their home.

“I was living in a tiny little flat in North London with my girlfriend and there was this Hitchcock-esque view of an elderly couple across from us,” said Chatten in a statement. “They had these blazing arguments that sent pigeons flying around, and after each one the man in the couple would come out onto this little balcony he had and just breathe for about 10 minutes. I couldn’t help but imagine it as a reflection of myself and my girlfriend in years to come, and ourselves as a reflection of a younger, happier version of them.”

Girl Ultra Brings Her Latin R&B Sound To NPR’s Tiny Desk Series

Following Omar Apollo, Girl Ultra is the latest artist to take over NPR’s Tiny Desk series. In the intimate performance that was released today (September 21), the Mexican singer-songwriter sang hits like “DameLove” and “Punk.”

To celebrate Latinx Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15), NPR brought back the El Tiny series, which will feature Latin artists performing in the Tiny Desk studio. Apollo kicked off the series last week. Representing Mexico, Girl Ultra was next in line to bring her alternative edge to the studio.

Mariana de Miguel, who goes by her stage name Girl Ultra, is one of the artists leading the Latin R&B movement. She established herself as a force in the emerging genre with her breakthrough album, 2019’s Nuevos Aires. In her latest EP, El Sur, Girl Ultra expanded her sonic palette with elements of rock and house music in the mix. The EP’s title is a nod to south of Mexico City where she embraced these new sonic influences.

Girl Ultra is a revelation in her El Tiny desk performance. The four-song set spans her career, from the twinkling R&B of “Bombay” to the aptly-titled “Punk,” where she pulled out her guitar to rock out with her band. Girl Ultra also performed a stripped-down version of “DameLove,” her haunting collaboration with Mexican-American singer Cuco. For her grand finale, she flipped her R&B ballad “Ella Tú y Yo” into one of the set’s electrifying moments.

Tokischa, Carla Morrison, Jessie Reyez, and Trueno will be the next Latin artists to be featured in the El Tiny series.

Women are shocking their boyfriends by showing them how  tampons actually work

This article originally appeared on 01.27.21

Menstrual taboos are as old as time and found across cultures. They’ve been used to separate women from men physically — menstrual huts are still a thing — and socially, by creating the perception that a natural bodily function is a sign of weakness.

Even in today’s world women are deemed unfit for positions of power because some men actually believe they won’t be able to handle stressful situations while mensurating.

“Menstruation is an opening for attack: a mark of shame, a sign of weakness, an argument to keep women out of positions of power,’ Colin Schultz writes in Popular Science.

The big problem with menstrual taboos is the way that males are educated on the subject leaves them with a patchwork of ideas that don’t necessarily add up to the whole picture. First, there’s the information they get from growing up with women in the house.

Then, there are the cryptic descriptions of menstruation seen in advertising and the cold, scientific way the topic is taught in sex education.

“Boys’ early learning about menstruation is haphazard,” a 2011 study published in the Journal of Family Issues reads. “The mysterious nature of what happens to girls contributes to a gap in boys’ knowledge about female bodies and to some negative views about girls.”

Unfortunately, the gaps in the average man’s understanding of a complex female health issue can put women in a difficult position. Whether it’s denying them positions of power or a failure to understand their discomfort.

That’s why it’s so important for men to become better educated about menstruation.

A group of women on TikTok are helping the men in their lives better understand the subject by showing them how tampons work on the inside of their bodies by dousing them in water. They call it the Boyfriend Challenge. Some of the guys’ reactions are clearly over-the-top, but it’s also obvious that many of them have no idea how tampons function.

A video by the Demery family has gone viral attracting nearly eight million views. It’s fun to watch, but it also shows men how tampons function and what women go through during their monthly cycle.

Rachel’s man just uttered the phrase “vagina parachute.”

@mrshillery829 Of course I had to make my husband do this! I will forever call tampons “vagina parachutes”! LMAO!! #tamponchallenge #husbandpranks #funny #fyp

Amani’s boyfriend was so astounded by the revelation he let out a massive expletive then apologized for the agony she must go through.

This guy was amazed by the absorbancy.

Let’s hope this challenge gave some men out there a better understanding of what women go through every month and a little more sympathy for the women in their lives.

Hopefully it also makes them feel a little more comfortable around period products and inspires them to pick up the correct box of tampons next time they’re at the grocery store.

Researchers dumped tons of coffee waste into a forest. This is what it looks like now.

This article originally appeared on 03.29.21

One of the biggest problems with coffee production is that it generates an incredible amount of waste. Once coffee beans are separated from cherries, about 45% of the entire biomass is discarded.

So for every pound of roasted coffee we enjoy, an equivalent amount of coffee pulp is discarded into massive landfills across the globe. That means that approximately 10 million tons of coffee pulp is discarded into the environment every year.

When disposed of improperly, the waste can cause serious damage soil and water sources.

However, a new study published in the British Ecological Society journal Ecological Solutions and Evidence has found that coffee pulp isn’t just a nuisance to be discarded. It can have an incredibly positive impact on regrowing deforested areas of the planet.

via British Ecological Society

In 2018, researchers from ETH-Zurich and the University of Hawaii spread 30 dump trucks worth of coffee pulp over a roughly 100′ x 130′ area of degraded land in Costa Rica. The experiment took place on a former coffee farm that underwent rapid deforestation in the 1950s.

The coffee pulp was spread three-feet thick over the entire area.

Another plot of land near the coffee pulp dump was left alone to act as a control for the experiment.

“The results were dramatic.” Dr. Rebecca Cole, lead author of the study, said. “The area treated with a thick layer of coffee pulp turned into a small forest in only two years while the control plot remained dominated by non-native pasture grasses.”

In just two years, the area treated with coffee pulp had an 80% canopy cover, compared to just 20% of the control area. So, the coffee-pulp-treated area grew four times more rapidly. Like a jolt of caffeine, it reinvigorated biological activity in the area.

The canopy was also four times taller than that of the control.

via British Ecological Society

The coffee-treated area also eliminated an invasive species of grass that took over the land and prevented forest succession. Its elimination allowed for other native species to take over and recolonize the area.

“This case study suggests that agricultural by-products can be used to speed up forest recovery on degraded tropical lands. In situations where processing these by-products incurs a cost to agricultural industries, using them for restoration to meet global reforestation objectives can represent a ‘win-win’ scenario,” Dr. Cole said.

If the results are repeatable it’s a win-win for coffee drinkers and the environment.

Researchers believe that coffee treatments can be a cost-effective way to reforest degraded land. They may also work to reverse the effects of climate change by supporting the growth of forests across the globe.

The 2016 Paris Agreement made reforestation an important part of the fight against climate change. The agreement incentivizes developing countries to reduce deforestation and forest degradation, promote forest conservation and sustainable management, and enhance forest carbon stocks in developing countries.

“We hope our study is a jumping off point for other researchers and industries to take a look at how they might make their production more efficient by creating links to the global restoration movement,” Dr. Cole said.

Nilüfer Yanya Drops A Cover Of PJ Harvey’s ‘Haunting’ Song ‘Rid Of Me’

Nilüfer Yanya has released a brand new cover of PJ Harvey’s “Rid Of Me.” Her rendition maintains the haunting vocals that make the hit song so compelling, while slightly switching the instrumental once it reaches its peak. Yanya’s cover comes complete with a video visualizer also.

“‘Rid of Me’ haunted me for many years after I first heard it, but in a comforting kind of way, like I knew it was always there for me,” she said about the decision to release a cover. “It comes across defiant, alien, and twisted, but it is a perfect song. I actually think it’s very romantic despite what some of the lyrics get at.”

Earlier this year, the London-based musician put out her sophomore studio album Painless via ATO Records and appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Yanya is also set to play a handful of international dates, starting in October at California’s Desert Daze Festival.

We Spoke With Famed Burger Chef Alvin Cailan About Pairing Gin With The Perfect Burger

To say Chef Alvin Cailan changed the burger game would be an understatement. The L.A. chef helped create the modern burger game.

Chef Cailan’s approach is very straightforward, some would even argue “back to basics” — focusing on the best ingredients to make simple burgers pop. In short, you don’t need a million add-ons when you can just use a killer bun, some great pickle, solid American cheese, a good beef grind, and a little onion (okay, and maybe a dope burger sauce too). That kind of simplicity has been the foundation upon which Cailan built his burger empire on — at Umami and Amboy — after his smashing success with eggs and brunch at the still beloved Eggslut.

As the voice in modern burger-dom, it’s no surprise that Cailan teamed up with an iconic brand like Tanqueray Gin to pair one of his fantastic burgers with a gin cocktail. Perhaps even less surprisingly, onions took center stage in the cocktail (a Gin Ricky) as well as in the burger, the aptly named Damn Fancy burger with a double smash patty, lime-juice-black-pepper-olive-oil-gin-soaked onions, and just the right amount of tangy burger sauce and melty cheese.

We’ll teach you how to make the cocktail below, but first, let’s dive into what inspired Chef Cailan to make this pairing for this year’s melding of streetwear and foodies at Los Angeles’ Family Style Food Festival (October 9th). It’s a fun chat and, yes, we totally nerd out about the brilliance of onions and beef for a while. Let’s jump in!

When you look at a project like Family Style, what attracts you to it? Is it the idea of bringing people in to show them something cool? What excites you, man?

When it comes to Family Style, it’s really a celebration of our city when it comes to food. Family Style’s by far my favorite event of the year because it merges two worlds that I love so much, which is streetwear and food. And it’s finally becoming a thing! I’ve been saying this for the last ten years, the people who I used to hang out with and wait in line to get sneakers are now waiting in line to get into restaurants. So when Family Style started, I was like, “This is the most genius thing ever.”

And I look forward to it because it’s our chance to really kind of flex and show our colleagues and our friends (who are also in the restaurant industry) what we’ve been up to, what we’re about, what type of collaborations that we’re going to do. It’s just a creative event where we really can just maximize our cheffiness and our creativity with designers and partners.

You have a master chef’s palate that you built over your lifetime. When you look at how you’re going to pair something like this gin cocktail with a burger, what are you looking at as your entryway into that? But then what are you looking at when you’re actually building it?

First things first, it’s all about the flavor palate. It’s all about what we have to work with, and luckily gin and beef have a great affinity with each other. When I heard that we were able to do it with Tanqueray, I was like, “This is perfect.” There’s plenty of juniper berry with very earthy grassy notes to it that then brings out those notes in a burger. So it always starts with the flavor of what we’re going to do. If you’re an old-school food guy, you’ll remember that José Andrés taught us all to be gin and tonic lovers. And so when we teamed up with Tanqueray and then when I found out what the cocktail was going to be, really just the recipe wrote itself.

Right on. You know, there are salad elements to a burger and there are salad elements to a gin and tonic, especially if you get into the Spanish side of G&Ts. You’re not into salad-ing up your burgers. So how did you find a balance there between what you’re going to put in your gin and tonic and what you put on your burger?

I have a very solid build schedule when it comes to burgers. It’s almost become a signature look for my burgers, you never see a salad, so to speak, on my burger. But what’s cool about this particular collaboration is that you can actually get the flavors of fresh, crisp, stuff like that. So for me, you take the body — meat, cheese, bun — and if those three are perfect, then everything else that you could put on there is just added pleasure.

In this case, I realized, ‘hey, one of my favorite things in the world is when I’m having a Gibson with a pearl onion in it sometimes.

Alvin Burger Gin
Diageo

When I have that drink and I eat the onion, it’s one of my favorite things in a crafted cocktail. So I took that as an inspiration and then just went with the flavors. So lime and black pepper are mixed together with those onions. It was like gin, lime, black pepper, and onions and it just tasted like that beautiful onion after a good Gibson.

When you sit down to a meal like this, what do you think the proper ratio is when you’re actually drinking and eating something as a pairing? Do you open your palate up with the burger and then go into the drink or do you save the drink for the end? How do you approach that?

I go all in together. I’m like bite a burger, take a sip, bite a burger, take a sip. My dad actually is one of those dudes who segments everything. And for me, it needs to have that explosion of flavor and I think that’s what makes a great pairing. So I’m definitely a bite, drink kind of guy, for real. Even when it comes to wine and all of that, I want to be able to have the lingering flavors while I take a sip, as opposed to separate.

Absolutely. I have friends who’ll eat their fries first, completely separately, and then they’ll eat their burger, and then they’ll have their drink… It’s wild to me.

That’s my dad. My dad does that and it drives me nuts.

We’re on the same page then. Then again, my son puts his fries on the burger and eats them.

On the burger? See, the next generation is different.

Yeah, he’s just like, all in, baby, all in!

There are no rules!

I’m a big onion-on-burger guy, as mentioned already. Why do you think onion works so well on burgers?

I literally just got back from Dubai, and in Dubai, there’s this great ground beef dish that’s grilled. And on the plate, there are just raw straight-up onions and you eat them like chips while you’re eating the dish. I had a lot of time to think about this because our fat ratio to our beef here in America is a lot fattier and over there it’s a lot leaner. But the one thing that we want to have is that fresh balance that has to be savory. And I think the onion is the freshest, most savory ingredient that helps cut through the flavor of beef. And honestly, without it, sometimes it feels like there’s something missing, you know what I mean? It’s almost like you get mouth fatigue when you’re eating just straight-up beef.

It’s endless chewing…

We have a Filipino dish and it’s literally just slices of beef stewed down with soy sauce and onions. That flavor is, for me, so embedded into my palate that I need to have onion when it comes to eating red meat or beef in general. So in my opinion, needing that crisp freshness or even in a sweet form, it’s still so savory that it doesn’t take away from beef, it actually makes it better.

I know what you mean. I spent years living in Berlin and the Döner Kebab scene is basically the food of the city. When I first moved there, I was always getting it the way any tourist would, just with everything on it. You know, give it to me, so I can put it in my face. But then as I went out with locals and learned to order it always with double beef, double onion, garlic sauce, and nothing else.

I don’t see anything wrong with that at all.

Just beef, raw white onions, and a sort of ranch-y garlic sauce. I miss it.

Fire. Dude, super good.

So good. I hate using the word “simple,” but it is just basic elements.

Oh yeah. It’s just the pure joy of why you love food, those two combinations together, it’s perfect.

I’m really excited about this cocktail and this burger, man. Tell us a little bit more about the launch and what you’re looking forward to at Family Style.

Last year we had a makeshift VIP sensation at our booth because of where we were located. So I knew we needed to step up so while we were planning this year’s booth, I was like, “Dude, if we’re doing this with Tanqueray, we have to make this into the most energetic area of the festival.” And it was perfect because Tanqueray was on board to do just that.

So now our booth is going to be a big bar/burger joint with its own area where you can drink and have fun. It’s going to be one of the most unique experiences at the festival and yeah, dude, I’m super stoked because last year was unplanned and this year it’s planned. So it’s going to be amazing. Me and my friends are already like, “Yo, what hotel are we staying at?” And we live only like 30 minutes or 15 minutes away from the venue. But we’re like, “No. We’re teaming up with Tanqueray, we have to be responsible. Let’s go stay at a hotel nearby!” So yeah, dude, we’re going to have a blast this year.

BTS And ‘Cookie Run: Kingdom’ Are Collaborating For A Sweet In-Game Treat

As if releasing a cookbook wasn’t enough, BTS takes it a step further by becoming cookies themselves — in virtual form, of course.

We all know BTS and gaming go hand-in-hand. But what happens when you bring the world’s most popular boy band with one of the most popular mobile games on the market right now? Nothing but a sweet, sweet collaboration.

Mobile gaming developer Devsisters is set to release special in-game content with K-pop’s global stars on their popular game Cookie Run: Kingdom next month. Titled “Braver Together,” each member of BTS — Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook — will receive their own cookie character, as well as a special story that reflects each of them with BTS-themed maps, according to a report from Rolling Stone. Not to mention, the group’s cookie counterparts will also hold an in-game concert.

“The Cookie Run community is about celebrating diversity and supporting each other in choosing to be who you are,” Devsisters CEO Marie Suh told the outlet in an interview. “We knew how well our core values aligned with those of BTS, so welcoming BTS and ARMY into the Cookie Run Universe felt like a natural fit.”

The first teaser of the collaboration dropped on Tuesday, September 20, with a video of purple and white gummies taking over the screen, hinting BTS’ “borahae” — or “I purple (love) you” agenda. The “Braver Together” collaboration between BTS and Cookie Run: Kingdom is set to release on the mobile game on October 13.

Billie Eilish Shares Live Videos Of Her Performing ‘TV’ And ‘The 30th’ In Singapore

Back in July, Billie Eilish shared a two-track EP called Guitar Songs, containing songs called “TV” and “The 30th,” which she had previously performed at stops on her Happier Than Ever world tour. Today, she has shared two live videos of her performing the tracks, which have quickly become fan favorites.

Joined by her brother, Finneas, Eilish performs stripped-back versions of the songs in the Cloud Forest at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore. The Cloud Forest is symbolic of innovation, sustainability, and conservation, with its magical greenery throughout the space. The space stood out to Eilish while she was touring.

“Singapore was one of the first places I ever went on tour. I was only there for a day and absolutely fell in love with it.” Billie said in a statement. “The Cloud Forest is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen in my life. These two songs really are just very important to me in a lot of ways. I feel really connected to them and very personally protective over them, and I wanted to have some sort of peace with the songs that felt really intimate and personal. It just felt really comfortable to do it in a place as beautiful at the Cloud Forest.”

The videos were directed by Singaporean director Choānn and shot in partnership with the Singapore Tourism Board, as part of their international recovery campaign, SingapoReimagine.

Michigan GOP Gubernatorial Nominee Tudor Dixon Helpfully Explained What Porn Was To A Reporter, And Even Kindly Offered To Send Some Examples

In a sea of wannabe governors, Tudor Dixon is doing a pretty good job of proving that she’d easily fit in with the Ron DeSantises and Ted Cruzes of the world. As Mediaite reports, the gubernatorial candidate from Michigan held a press conference on Tuesday, where she basically made it sound as if educators were bringing kids to peep shows by exposing them to certain books. If elected, Dixon promised that:

We will ban school personnel from talking to young kids about sex and gender behind their parents’ backs. Leadership is being unafraid to say that if an adult is caught showing pornographic materials to young children and talking to them about sex in school without their parent’s consent, that adult will be prosecuted just as they would currently if they did that at a bus stop…

Our kids are not lab rats for the progressive left. Our schools are not laboratories for social experiments. It is time to put an end to radical sex and gender activism in our schools. And we will, when I am Governor.

When a reporter dared to push Dixon further on her definition of pornography, and asked her to “define what pornographic means for you in terms of books in K-12 schools?,” the gubernatorial candidate tried to get cutesy — and pedantic.

“You need me to define ‘pornographic’?,” Dixon asked with an obnoxious smirk. “I mean, I can, if you want me to. Alright, so there’s two naked people and they are acting out a sexual act — and multiple different sexual acts… Do you want me to send you some examples so you can see them?”

When the reporter indicated that yes, she would be interested in getting some literary examples of what Dixon deems inappropriate — despite the fact that her definition of “pornography” seems to be what some might just consider “sex” — the candidate replied that “that would be fine.”

We look forward to the follow-up.

Chris Evans Thought Ana De Armas Was The Real Marilyn Monroe When She Showed Him Her ‘Blonde’ Transformation

As Ana de Armas racks up some rave reviews for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s Blonde, her former co-stars have been coming forward with their own praise for what’s being heralded as a performance of a lifetime. One of those co-stars is Captain America himself, Chris Evans, who starred with de Armas in Knives Out, The Gray Man, and the upcoming Ghosted.

While talking to Variety for a cover profile on de Armas, Evans revealed that he didn’t even recognize the actress when she showed him a still from the Blonde production. She transformed so perfectly into Monroe that Evans couldn’t believe what he was looking at:

“I think this was one of the first opportunities she had to really sink her teeth into something incredibly demanding,” says Chris Evans, her co-star in “Knives Out” and “The Gray Man.” “I didn’t see one bit of fear; I saw excitement.”

When de Armas first showed Evans a still from her camera test, he says, “I remember looking at it and saying, ‘OK, that’s Marilyn … where’s your shot? That’s you? Holy shit! You’re going to win an Oscar for this!’”

Blonde arrives on Netflix at the end of the month, so it’ll be interesting to see how general audiences react to the film that has already garnished numerous headlines about its controversial NC-17 rating, which Dominik doesn’t think it deserved.

“This sort of Eisenhower morality doesn’t really seem to bear much resemblance to what’s going on in the world,” the Blonde director recently told MovieMaker. “But I feel like anything that’s showing a woman in sexual situations is sort of something that — nobody wants to look under that hood.”

Blonde starts streaming September 28 on Netflix.
