Federal Prosecutors Want Steve Bannon To Do Jail Time For His Contempt Of Congress Conviction

Steve Bannon could be looking at jail time after being found guilty on contempt of Congress charges over the summer. Donald Trump’s former advisor is staring down the barrel of a sentencing hearing on Friday, and federal prosecutors are pushing for both the maximum prison sentence and the maximum fine after Bannon repeatedly boasted that he’ll pay whatever the governor throws at him.

Via CNN:

“For his sustained, bad-faith contempt of Congress, the Defendant should be sentenced to six months’ imprisonment – the top end of the Sentencing Guidelines’ range – and fined $200,000 – based on his insistence on paying the maximum fine rather than cooperate with the Probation Office’s routine pre-sentencing financial investigation,” prosecutors wrote in their court filing on Monday.

According to the sentencing recommendation filed on Monday, Bannon’s role in the January 6 attack warrants a stiff punishment. “The rioters who overran the Capitol on January 6 did not just attack a building – they assaulted the rule of law upon which this country was built and through which it endures,” prosecutors wrote. “By flouting the Select Committee’s subpoena and its authority, the Defendant exacerbated that assault.”

Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg for Bannon’s legal troubles. After being found guilty on the contempt charges, he was indicted in New York for allegedly ripping off MAGA supporters with his “We Build The Wall” organization. Before leaving office, Trump had pardoned Bannon in the midst of a federal investigation that hilariously saw him being arrested on a boat by the Postal Service. However, that pardon does not protect Bannon at the state level where he’s now facing charges.

Pod Yourself The Wire Episode Eight, ‘Lessons,’ With Author Leah Carroll

Episode eight of Pod Yourself The Wire is now available early at Patreon.com/frotcast. Episode seven is now available for free.

“Can someone please make a Stringer Bell profile on LinkedIn?” -Leah Carroll

With each pod we get closer to landing David Simon. Today’s guest is not only a casual acquaintance of Baltimore’s preeminent erudite curse word factory, she’s also the author of Down City: A Daughter’s Story of Love, Memory, and Murder. Pod Yourself A Gun guest Leah Carroll returns to talk to Matt & Vince about The Wire season one, episode eight: “Lessons.”

Appropriate that the name of the name of the episode is “Lessons” because everyone learned something. McNulty learns that his children are too good at the front & follow “game” he taught them after he loses them while they tail Stringer Bell shopping at a farmer’s market. The market’s security guard learns what everyone else knows about Jimmy – he’s just not a good dad. We all learn that Stringer Bell drives a sensible maroon Toyota Camry, and from Stringer, the corner boys-turned-copy boys learn the difference between elastic and inelastic products. It’s not just fictional characters learning lessons, Matt learns that he’s using an outdated and and disrespectful term for sex workers. Crazy because he’s basically a sex worker himself, what with this podcast making all our listeners so damn horny.

Lauren Boebert Is Denying That She Shot And Killed Her Neighbor’s Dog That Was Attacking Her Goats, Claims Another Neighbor Was The Actual Shooter

Rootin’ tootin’ Lauren Boebert‘s Colorado neighborhood doesn’t sound like the most peaceful place in which to reside. A few months ago, allegations surfaced about Lauren’s husband, Jayson, wanting “to fight with everyone in the neighborhood.” This followed an incident in which a 911 call detailed allegations of their son driving “like 50 miles per hour” down residential streets. That situation seems to have calmed down, but now, another controversy is afoot. And for the record, Boebert is denying all involvement in this incident, which involves the death of a neighbor’s dog.

The American Muckrakers PAC (which Boebert previously threatened to sue for spreading salacious stories about her after they helped to tank Madison Cawthorn’s reelection prospects) shared a screen cap that purports to be from a Boebert neighbor, who directly accused Lauren of shooting the husky in August 2022. These are enormous accusations (you can read them here) with the woman writing, “[Y]ou took my bestfriend away with the ‘power’ of your gun.”

In response, Boebert came forward to declare that she had nothing to do with the killing of her neighbor’s dog. “For the uninformed trolls: The story that was started saying I killed a neighbors dog is not true. I’ve never shot or killed any dog, ever,” she wrote. “A neighbor told the police that he shot two dogs.” Boebert also mentioned, “I believe there is a police report that verifies the neighbor’s account of why he shot the dogs.”

The congresswoman counters that she had heard that “the dogs he shot” were “killing livestock in our neighborhood including several of our family’s goats.” Newsweek follows up after an email from Boebert, who screencapped a Facebook post from another neighbor, Tina Bergonzini, who insisted that Boebert didn’t kill any dogs. “The cops were contacted, they know who shot the dogs,” Bergonzini reportedly posted. “My boyfriend shot both of them.”

Does Taylor Swift Have A Thursday Night Football Surprise?

Taylor Swift was rumored to be the halftime performer for this season’s Super Bowl for an afternoon before Rihanna was confirmed earlier last month, but Swift is still incorporating the NFL in her Midnights rollout.

The powerhouse songwriter shared her “Midnights Manifest” across her social channels, featuring an animated calendar for this week leading up to her tenth studio album’s arrival on Friday (October 21). Thursday is designated with, “Teaser trailer – 3rd quarter of Thursday Night Football on Prime Video.”

Swift’s presence was first teased during halftime of last week’s Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime Video. It was the undisputed highlight of a snoozefest between the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders.

“It’s a little chilly tonight in the Windy City. Might be time to break out the cardigans and red scarf,” host Charissa Thompson said, as fellow broadcaster Tony Gonzalez pointed at the red scarf he was wearing. “For the Bears, they need to calm down and get things turned around so the clock doesn’t strike midnight on their season. And if that sounds like I’m intentionally making more than my fair share of references to arguably the most famous musical artist in the world right now, well, you know what? You know it all too well, and you might just want to check out Thursday Night Football on Prime Video next week as the Saints travel to Arizona for an exclusive premiere of something very, very special. Trust me.”

Swift announced Midnights while accepting Video Of The Year at August’s 2022 MTV VMAs and methodically revealed the tracklist through TikTok in subsequent weeks.

Midnights is out on 10/21 via Republic. Pre-order it here.

The Celtics Unveiled New Uniforms Paying Tribute To Bill Russell

Earlier this summer the NBA lost one of its all-time greats in Bill Russell, as the 11-time champion died at 88 years old. The league announced they would be retiring Russell’s number league-wide in August, with players already wearing No. 6 allowed to continue to do so, and many teams have put his number on their court this year in remembrance of the legend.

In Boston, where Russell won his 11 titles and led the Celtics to one of the all-time great runs in team sports, the team will honor their franchise’s best with a number of tributes, including a new set of City Edition uniforms inspired by Russell that they will wear in the season opener on Tuesday night against the 76ers.

The script font is inspired by a restaurant Russell owned, Slade’s Bar & Grill, and features 11 gold diamonds on the side to represent his 11 championships, with the same 11 diamonds encircling his No. 6 on the belt.

They are extremely well done by the team and Nike, and immediately become one of the best alternate uniforms in the league. While Nike has missed on plenty of new uniforms since they started implementing the new editions for each team every year, these are a reminder that when there’s a real, specific inspiration for a uniform set they tend to be much better.

Diddy Unloads ‘Gotta Move On’ Remixes With Bryson Tiller, Yung Miami, Ashanti, Fabolous, And More

Diddy took New Music Friday seriously. He officially debuted “Gotta Move On” with Bryson Tiller, at this summer’s Billboard Music Awards. The Love Records track received a boost to carry it through autumn with three remixes: “Gotta Move On [Queens Remix]” featuring Ashanti, Tiller, and Yung Miami, plus the “Cool & Dre Remix” and “Kings Remix” featuring Fabolous, Tory Lanez and Tiller.

The “Queens Remix” came with a cinematic video. In the Kid Art-directed visual, Diddy cruises through New York City, Yung Miami raps alongside him, and Ashanti delivers her eyebrow-raising verse in a kitchen where a chef is plating delicacies.

Diddy dished on Ashanti’s involvement in the remix during a recent visit to The Breakfast Club, all but confirming that her verse is a direct response to Irv Gotti’s wild Drink Champs interview from August.

“I think that music and art could give you a chance to speak your mind when it comes to the love territory,” Diddy told The Breakfast Club. After I seen Irv [Gotti] do his thing, and I was just thinking, I was like, Sis may wanna express herself on this song.” He added, “We talk about whatever’s going through our lives. And Irv is my man, and I knew Ashanti before. Ashanti was, like, 14. And I just felt like with the music, I’m trying to get real truth out the music.”

In the “Queens Remix,” Ashanti doesn’t hold back, seemingly ripping Gotti a new one with pristine flow: “You thought that you could have it on the weekends / Now you’re mad ’cause I told you I was leaving / N***a, I’m done / N***a, I’m gone / N***a, move on / Too much of your sh*t, you got a little d*ck / It’s givin’ obsessed.”

The biggest clue that this is absolutely about Gotti is Ashanti mentioning that “it’s been twenty years,” and it’s beyond time to “say less” and “move on.”

With Drink Champs, Gotti went into intimate detail about his and Ashanti’s relationship around her 2002 single “Happy.” The Murder Inc. Records boss claimed that he found out Ashanti was dating Nelly while watching an NBA game on television, even though he was in love with her and had been together “every day for, like, two years.” As expected, there was backlash.

Watch all three remixes below.

All The Best New Music From This Week That You Need To Hear

Keeping up with new music can be exhausting, even impossible. From the weekly album releases to standalone singles dropping on a daily basis, the amount of music is so vast it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks. Even following along with the Uproxx recommendations on a daily basis can be a lot to ask, so every Monday we’re offering up this rundown of the best new music this week.

This week saw a Blink-182 reunion years in the making and. Yeah, it was a great week for new music. Check out the highlights below.

For more music recommendations, check out our Listen To This section, as well as our Indie Mixtape and Pop Life newsletters. Also find our Uproxx HQ Spotify playlist, which is updated weekly with the best new music, at the end of this post.

Blink-182 — “Edging”

It happened: Tom DeLonge returned to Blink-182. The newly reunited band has a lot of great things on the way, most notably a tour and album. They offered the first taste of the album last week with “Edging,” which is the first taste of DeLonge and Mark Hoppus trading off verses like they do in years.

Lil Baby — “From Now On” Feat. Future

On It’s Only Me, Lil Baby’s latest, it really is only him pretty often, as he has no features on a lot of tracks. A collaboration is one of the album’s highlights, though, as his and Future’s “From Now On” sees the two doing work on a menacing and eerie beat.

The 1975 — “The 1975”

As Matty Healy and the rest of The 1975 do, they opened their new album, Being Funny In A Foreign Language, with a song dubbed “The 1975.” In his review of the album, Uproxx’s Steven Hyden says of this installment, “Take the album’s first song, titled ‘The 1975’ in the manner of all the band’s lead-off album tracks, in which he references QAnon and riffs on doom-scrolling and the internet’s negative impact on the body images of teenage girls. On paper, it could be interpreted as yet another example of Healy lunging in vain for topical profundity. But Healy’s musings are set to music that so obviously rips off LCD Soundsystem’s “‘All My Friends’ that it can only be taken as a sly, tongue-in-cheek joke.”

Lil Yachty — “Poland”

After “Poland” became a social media hit, Yachty finally gave the song a proper release on streaming platforms and with a Cole Bennett-directed video. The song, named after the rapper spotted a Poland Spring water bottle, has made quite the impact, so much so that Poland’s prime minister actually invited him to the country.

Marshmello and Juice WRLD — “Bye Bye”

It’s been nearly three years now since Juice WRLD died in late 2019, and yet, new music from the late rapper has continued to surface. The latest of it came last week, a collaboration with Marshmello called “Bye Bye” on which Juice sings, “I’m out of pills / You’re out of lies / It stays dark outside / Even when it’s daytime / Like, bye-bye.”

Doechii — “Stressed”

Doechii is not far removed from releasing her recent She/Her/Black B*tch EP and now she’s got more new music out, a single called “Stressed.” Uproxx’s Alex Gonzalez notes that on the song, “Doechii shows off both her singing and her rapping chops over a moody, percussion-heavy beat.”

Stormzy — “Hide & Seek”

Stormzy is finally following his 2019 album Heavy Is The Head, his second straight chart-topper in the UK, with another project. This Is What I Mean is set to drop in November, and last week he previewed it with “Hide & Seek,” an introspective tune on which he tries to convince his lover to give them another chance: “We built this all wrong, I’ll takе blame / But instead of us tearing it down, wе’ll rearrange.”

Wild Pink — “Abducted At The Grief Retreat”

Wild Pink’s John Ross told Uproxx about the ILYSM highlight, “I think that there’s some metaphors on the record for love and obsession that have to do with ghosts and hauntings. Like in the song ‘ILYSM’ for example, the character is visited by a ghost, and maybe confused about their feelings for the ghost. Which in my mind was kind of like how obsession can be confused with love. Or ‘Abducted At The Grief Retreat’ is about an alien abduction, and again, the person’s kinda confused about their feelings for their alien captor. I guess I was just thinking about that at the time.”

Weyes Blood — “Grapevine”

November brings And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow, the latest LP from Weyes Blood. She teased it last week with “Grapevine” and fans who wanted to make their first listen of the tune special got directions directly from Weyes, who instructed on social media, “Play it in your car driving late at night.”

Tove Lo — “Grapefruit”

“Grapefruit” is perhaps Tove Lo’s most vulnerable song ever, as she explains, “I’ve tried to write this song for over 10 years. I know I haven’t talked about it a lot in interviews or even in my music, which is my most honest place. I guess I had to find the right way to share the feelings and the vicious circle of behavior I was stuck in. I’ve been free from my ED and my body issues for a very long time but they did take up too many of my teenage years. I’m not sure why I wrote this song now. Maybe the 2 years of stillness brought back memories, maybe I needed all this time I’ve been free from it to be able to look back without feeling pain. One of the many feelings I remember is needing to crawl out of my own skin. I felt so trapped in a body I hated.”

NORE Apologizes For His Disastrous ‘Drink Champs’ Interview With Kanye West

There’s an old adage about journalism that has been attributed to numerous sources but which ultimately boils down to explaining a journalist’s responsibilities in plain and effective terms. “If someone says it’s raining and another person says it’s dry, it’s not your job to quote them both. Your job is to look out the f*cking window and find out which is true.”

NORE has never heard this quote. NORE is not a journalist.

Someone should tell him that though, because while he did try to apologize for the disastrous Drink Champs interview with Kanye West that has the family of George Floyd considering a lawsuit and fans on Twitter denouncing NORE’s podcast, he also apparently thinks he did a good job stepping out of the artist’s way and letting him talk.

Appearing on Hot 97’s Ebro In The Morning (sans Ebro, which is probably the only reason nobody called him out on this nonsense), NORE explained why he decided to host the interview despite Kanye’s recent trip down the Q-Anon rabbit hole. “I felt i could control the situation,” he said. “I felt like I could control the interview. And I learned early on that I [couldn’t]. As a Black man i feel like I failed. As a human I feel like I failed. As a journalist I feel like I succeeded.”

No, he did not. And after committing all those resources to doing the interview, I can certainly understand why he feels that he might have had to justify it by putting it out instead of pulling the plug like LeBron James and The Shop did last week. But here’s the thing: There’s never, not once, any excuse for giving a platform to someone who appears to be in the middle of a mental health crisis and is spouting racist rhetoric. The engagement isn’t worth people’s lives, and that is very much the trade that is being made there.

Antisemites and white supremacists probably don’t need to be told what horrid ideologies to parrot but every time a prominent public figure endorses one of those ideologies, it emboldens them. Just look at the last six years since you-know-who first ran for president. There’s been a sharp and kind of terrifying rise in hate group activity in the US ever since. (And if you think you’re safe, just wait until they decide to redraw the lines of who gets to be in their little racial purity club and you’re on the wrong side.)

NORE failed as a human, as a Black man, and as a journalist — because, again, he isn’t one — by letting Kanye get on his podcast and repeat white supremacist talking points, whether he pushed back or not. He failed again by not shelving the interview. At least he apologized, though, saying, “I sincerely apologize to anybody who was hurt by Kanye’s words, by Kanye’s actions.” However, in this case, that might be too little, too late.

Watch NORE’s full interview with the Ebro In The Morning show above.
