Netflix, Which Crushed Blockbuster, Has Released The First Trailer For Its New Sitcom About Blockbuster Being Crushed

As everyone knows, Netflix helped bring about the near total collapse of Blockbuster. It was an especially ironic move considering Blockbuster had a chance to buy Netflix in its infancy, but took a pass. Now, to add to that weirdness comes Blockbuster, a Netflix sitcom about… well, the collapse of Blockbuster.

The streaming giant has released its first trailer for the series, which comes from the creators of Superstore and Happy Endings. Starring Randall Park (WandaVision) and Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Blockbuster takes place in a store that’s only just now learning that it’s the last remaining location in the crumbling rental franchise. That realization is not going over well with the staff, particularly with Park’s character who has to hold everything together because this has been his job since the 7th grade. It’s all the man has until Fumero’s character comes walking back into his life after the more personal collapse of her marriage.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Timmy Yoon (Randall Park) Is an analog dreamer living in a 5G world. And after learning he is operating the last Blockbuster Video in America, Timmy and his staff employees (including his long-time crush, Eliza (Melissa Fumero) fight to stay relevant. The only way to succeed is to remind their community that they provide something big corporations can’t: human connection.

Blockbuster starts streaming November 3 on Netflix.

A Bunch Of NBA Players (And Also Lamar Jackson) Had Things To Say About Draymond Green Punching Jordan Poole

A video of the practice altercation involving Draymond Green and Jordan Poole hit the internet on Friday morning. While the audio was muted and it’s still unclear what led to things popping off, the pair were on the floor together during practice, Green got in Poole’s face, Poole responded by shoving his teammate, and Green threw a punch that sent Poole to the ground.

Much had been made about the incident, with Steph Curry and Steve Kerr both going to lengths to push back against a report that Poole’s attitude has been sour during camp ahead of his presumed big-money contract extension. But until Friday, we had no idea exactly how things went down. In the aftermath of the video hitting the internet, a number of NBA players gave their thoughts on things. There was Trae Young offering up a theory that this was all part of a plan by Green to get to the Lakers, but other current and former players chimed in as well.

Warriors forward Andre Iguodala had a simple response to a question about who leaked the footage, while ex-Warrior David West believes that person’s days in the organization should be numbered.

Another former Golden State player, Stephen Jackson, addressed the incident in a video and told Green “there’s no reason to sucker punch a young fella” before expressing that he spoke to the star forward on Thursday.

Even Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens cracked a few jokes about the whole thing.

According to Warriors general manager Bob Myers, Green apologized to the team on Thursday.

Becky G Visits Spain With Daviles De Novelda In Her Personal ‘Amantes’ Video

Becky G revisits the memories of a recent trip to Spain in her new “Amantes” music video. Spanish singer Daviles De Novelda also appears in the nostalgic video that was released today (October 7).

“Amantes” is Becky G’s first taste of new music since the release of her album Esquemas in May. That LP featured the global hits like “Mamiii” alongside Karol G and the disco-infused “Bailé Con Mi Ex.” Becky G released “Amantes” as a single last month. She dabbled in the Dominican bachata genre for the first time while blending in trap music beats. She was joined by De Novelda, who brought a flamenco twist to their track. Becky G and De Novelda traded verses about revisiting a past relationship at the lovers level.

Becky G brings the captivating love song to life in the “Amantes” video. Earlier this year, she visited Spain to perform “Amantes” with De Novelda. Captured mostly through a home video-like lens, Becky G shares a lot of the fun downtime that she had while exploring the country. De Novelda was there for many of Becky G’s candid moments. Shots from their performance are also included in the personal video.

Becky G is nominated for four Latin Grammy Awards this year. Her nominations include Best Urban Song for “Mamiii” and Song Of The Year and Record Of The Year for her feature in Christina Aguilera‘s “Pa Mis Muchachas.”

Yasiin Bey Jumped Into The Latest Kanye West Controversy With A Clever Play On ‘White Lives Matter’

Ladies and gentlemen, we have entered a new era of rap discourse. Once upon a time, hip-hop artists settled their differences in the studio. More recently, they took their disagreements to Twitter, providing a new source of entertainment for concerned observers. But Yasiin Bey, who’s always lived about 15 years in the future, has determined the next wave: Apparel.

While Kanye West’s “White Lives Matter” shirts have gotten plenty of press and reactions from peers, fans, and media outlets alike, Bey — who collaborated with Kanye early in the younger rapper’s career — reacted to his old friend’s latest publicity stunt in kind, sharing a photo of his own, similar but very different design. Like Kanye’s shirts, the front bears a seemingly unrelated image (West’s had a picture of the pope, while the offending slogan was emblazoned across the back in block letters), while the back has a slogan of its own which is a clever play on Kanye’s.

The German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel graces the front of Bey’s shirt, while the back bears the phrase “White Lies Matter,” graying out the “V” in “lives” to make its point crystal clear and as sharp as a brand-new kitchen knife.

Now, that’s how you make a political statement. It’s never been about whether anyone agreed. It’s been about making the message legible and Kanye’s just wasn’t — aside from being taken from a right-wing talking point cooked up specifically as a counter to a legitimate call to recognize the humanity of a group being victimized. Again, you’ll remember that the slogan “Black Lives Matter” emerged as a response to the murders of people like Ahmad Arbery, Trayvon Martin, and Rekia Boyd. The nonprofit that later co-opted the phrase might well have turned out to be a scam, but the urgency of the message remains. And to believe anything else is to buy into a lie — something that Yasiin Bey effectively points out in his response to West’s muddled message.

The Rose Expresses How Love Can Taste So ‘Sour’ With A New Music Video

Whenever The Rose presents something, it’s always emotional. (Unless you’re talking about their TikTok, of course.)

In what seems like forever and day since The Rose released a new music — four years since their last EP (Dawn) to be exact — the Korean rock quartet finally makes their big comeback with their first ever studio album Heal and its lead single “Sour.”

Creating an album centered around how music can heal, “Sour” is the song that represents the bitterness one can feel when heartbroken. Shot outdoors with breathtaking views, the melody, percussions, vocals, and synths actually creates an encouraging atmosphere almost as if the band wants to help you release the heartbreak.

Ahead of their album and video release, the Korean rock band kicked off this new chapter of releases with their pre-single “Childhood” three weeks ago.

Over the summer, The Rose — consisting of members Woosung, Dojoon, Hajoon, and Jaehyeong — signed with a new management and label this past August with Far East Movement’s Transparent Arts in conjunction with Wasserman Music representing them.

The Rose recently embarked on the North American leg of their Heal Tour in Los Angeles this past week.

Australia is banning entry to anyone found guilty of domestic violence anywhere in the world.

This story originally appeared on 04.01.19

Australia is sending a strong message to domestic abusers worldwide: You’re not welcome here.

Australia has recently broadened a migration law to bar any person who has been convicted of domestic violence anywhere in the world from getting a visa to enter the country. American R&B singer Chris Brown and boxing star Floyd Mayweather had been banned from the country in the past, following their domestic violence convictions. Now the ban applies to all foreign visitors or residents who have been found guilty of violence against women or children.

Even convicted domestic abusers who already have visas and are living in Australia can be kicked out under the new rule. The government is using the rule, which took effect on February 28, 2019 to send a message to domestic violence perpetrators.

“Australia has no tolerance for perpetrators of violence against women and children,” Federal Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs David Coleman said in a public statement. “The message is clear: if you’ve been convicted of a violent crime against women or children, you are not welcome in this country, wherever the offence occurred, whatever the sentence.”

The ban is supposed to make Australia safer, but not everyone is happy about it.

“By cancelling the visas of criminals we have made Australia a safer place,” Coleman said. “These crimes inflict long lasting trauma on the victims and their friends and family, and foreign criminals who commit them are not welcome in our country.”

However, Australia’s neighboring country of New Zealand has long taken issue with Australia’s policy of exporting convicts, and this new policy highlights why. Under the new rule, New Zealanders who have already served their sentences for domestic violence and lived in Australia most of their lives could be kicked out and sent to live in New Zealand. Such circumstances raise questions about when justice has been served and the role of rehabilitation in domestic violence convictions.

Australia, like many other countries, is trying to come to terms with its domestic violence problem.

Barring domestic violence perpetrators from other countries sends a strong message, but it’s only meaningful if the country also tackles the problem among its own citizens. According to a Personal Safety Study conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, about 17% of Australian women and 6% of Australian men have experienced partner violence since the age of 15. And the numbers have remained relatively stable since 2005.

That may seem to indicate that little progress has been made; however, as Australian law professor Heather Douglass points out, the numbers only tell part of the story. Since most people in abusive relationships don’t report the abuse until after they’ve left, it could simply be that more are leaving, which is a good thing. There has also been a marked increase in people seeking domestic violence services in some areas, which, again, is a good thing. For far too long, domestic violence was swept under the rug while victims were often too afraid or embarrassed to seek help. More calls for help could mean that the stigma associated with domestic violence is starting to fade.

Teenager creates eye-opening videos that shatter stereotypes surrounding autism and girls

This story originally appeared on 03.11.20

The most recent data shows that about one in 68 children in the U.S. are affected by autism and boys are four times more likely than girls to be diagnosed.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is marked by communication and social difficulties, sensory processing issues, and inflexible patterns of behavior. Almost everything that researchers have learned about the disorder is based on data derived from studies of boys.

However, researchers are starting to learn that ASD manifests differently in girls. This has led many girls to be undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

“The model that we have for a classic autism diagnosis has really turned out to be a male model,” Susan F. Epstein, PhD, a clinical neuropsychologist said according to Child Mind.

via PIxaBay

“That’s not to say that girls don’t ever fit it, but girls tend to have a quieter presentation, with not necessarily as much of the repetitive and restricted behavior, or it shows up in a different way,” Epstein added.

Stereotypical ASD behaviors may also get in the way of recognizing the disorder in girls.

“So where the boys are looking at train schedules, girls might have excessive interest in horses or unicorns, which is not unexpected for girls,” Dr. Epstein notes. “But the level of the interest might be missed and the level of oddity can be a little more damped down. It’s not quite as obvious to an untrained eye.”

Girls with ASD are usually better at hiding their autistic behaviors, so they suffer in silence.

Paige Layle, a 19-year-old eyelash technician from Ontario, Canada, has autism but because she’s a social butterfly, most people don’t realize she has the disorder.

“I get that a lot, that because I’m good-looking, nothing can be wrong with me — so I want to show that mental illness is diverse,” Layle told BuzzFeed.

To help people better understand how autism manifests in girls and women, Layle has made a series of videos on her TikTok page.

“I decided to start making videos because of an audio that was going all over TikTok that was making fun of autistic people. I hated it. I feel like many people don’t understand how many people are autistic,” she said.

Layle’s videos are eye-opening because they shatter some big myths about autism and show how difficult it can be to live with the disorder, especially if you don’t know you have it.

@paigelayle learn more about autism! 🙂 i get many questions every day to make more vids about it, i will continue to show you guys! #feature #fup #fyp #featureme ♬ original sound – paigelayle

In the first video, she explains how the initial research done on autism was only on boys or men.

“Girls usually end up showing different traits than guys do. Which is why it can take us years to get diagnosed. I was 15 when I got diagnosed and that’s considered early for a girl.”

She also explains that girls often are diagnosed later because they are better at hiding autistic behaviors.

“This is something we call masking. Masking is basically just being like a really good actor.

It’s where you take traits that everyone else is showing and start portraying them as yourself. It’s like a lot of copying going on. … In your mind you don’t think you’re copying. You think that this is normal and everyone feels the same way you do.

You basically feel like an alien and you’re really good at hiding that. Which is why I don’t seem autistic.”

In part two, she discusses the idea of being high-functioning.

@paigelayle no such thing as high/ low functioning autism!!! it’s just how YOU perceive us. not about how we’re affected. #feature #featureme #fup #fyp ♬ original sound – paigelayle

“Get high-functioning and low functioning out of your vocabulary. It doesn’t help anybody. I know you may think that saying ‘Oh like you’re high-functioning’ is compliment. It’s not a compliment. It’s also like a reminder that I’m just masking, and it’s so hard.

Masking is the most exhausting thing in the world… ‘High-functioning’ is basically a label that you can use to be like ‘Your autism doesn’t affect me that much.’ But I’ll tell you that everyone you think is high-functioning is greatly affected by their autism.”

In part three, Paige discusses common autistic traits that girls have.

@paigelayle more on special interests later ☺️ #feature #autism #fyp #fyp #featureme ♬ original sound – paigelayle

“I am overly social. I give way too much eye contact. I’m really good in social situations. It’s also very common for girls with autism to have other mental disabilities or mental disorders as well. I have seven and one of the main ones is OCD.

All of these mental illnesses stem from having autism. But OCD, anxiety, and depression are very common, especially in girls. Just the feeling that the world needs rules for you to understand it. That’s why a lot of autism special interests include things like anatomy, the human body, psychology, just figuring out how the world works is our way to figure out how to live in it.”

In part four, Paige discusses the topic of masking.

@paigelayle ahhh masking. can’t live with you, can’t live without you. #feature #fup #fyp #featureme #autism ♬ original sound – paigelayle

“When you’re in the autistic closet and you are not known to be autistic yet … you like subconsciously know that you’re weird and you don’t know how to act or how to be.

It’s like the way you walk, the way you talk, the way you wear your hair, like your mannerisms. Like everything you say. Everything you think. Everything you think that you enjoy. It’s all what you are accustomed to from your peers.

I’ve been diagnosed for four years and I’m still trying to figure out who I am and what I actually like to do. You just get to used to creating this mask that when it’s like ‘Hey, you can take it off,’ It’s like what the frick is underneath it? I don’t know what’s going on.”

Guillero del Toro Doesn’t Usually ‘Sh*t Talk’ But He Had To Speak Up Against ‘Cruel’ Criticisms Of Martin Scorsese

There’s a lot of discourse on Film Twitter today over an article about Martin Scorsese. For once, it’s only indirectly related to the director’s well-argued criticisms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In “Martin Scorsese: rinse and repeat self-indulgence,” published in the October 2022 issue of The Critic, the author belittles Scorsese for making movies that are “routinely an hour too long” and that he’s “lazily settled on Mafia-Picture Director” post-Goodfellas. There’s also a bit about his comments on the MCU: “Scorsese recently slammed the Marvel Cinematic Universe, asserting that its component films are sensationalist and empty. In fact, thoughtfulness and rationalism suffuse every single one of them,” the article reads, conventionally forgetting the dullness of Eternals, among others.

Guillermo del Toro — who, like Scorsese, is a Best Director winner — rarely wades into social media drama, but he couldn’t resist this time. “I very, very seldom post anything contradictory here- but- the amount of misconceptions, sloppy innacuracies and hostile adjectives not backed by an actual rationale is offensive, cruel and ill-intentioned. This article baited them traffic, but at what cost?” The Shape of Water filmmaker tweeted.

del Toro continued:

To be clear: If God offered to shorten my life to lengthen Scorsese’s- I’d take the deal. This man understands Cinema. Defends Cinema. Embodies Cinema. He has always fought for the art of it and against the industry of it. He has never been tamed and has a firm place in history.

I don’t shit talk, I don’t “slam” and I support- but if anyone thinks that [The Wolf of Wall Street] is “…achingly slow” or that Raging Bull is “… bad filmmaking” and that “No studio dares to utter the word ‘no’ to him.” Film language discussions, history lessons and research may be needed.

Cate Blanchett Gives The Best Performance Of Her Career In ‘Tár’

Todd Field’s Tár, his first film since 2006’s Little Children, documents the idyllic life of the famous, influential, EGOT-holding maestro Lydia Tár, played by Cate Blanchett. Lydia, who thinks she’s at the height of her career, is unknowingly on the cusp of her downfall (or cancellation in 2022 terms). The film has a limited release on October 7, with a wide release on October 28.

In the first act of the film, Lydia teaches a class at Juilliard. The scene is intentionally long and mostly consists of things anyone who is not extremely familiar with classical music understands. But Blanchett captures both an almost sensual passion for Johann Sebastian Bach and loathing for her Gen Z students (one of them says he doesn’t like Bach because he was a privileged white dude) in a rant to her class about separating art from the artist. Throughout the lecture, Lydia moves around the classroom wildly but assuredly, expressing her excitement and her anger with her delicate maestro hands (if you are a fan of hands, there are a lot of hands in Tar). In this scene, Lydia says “everyone is capable of murder.” It’s menacing and, by design, suggests that maybe that’s what this story is leading up to, and throughout the rest of the film, you’re on the edge of your seat wondering when the monster inside Lydia will be activated.

But Lydia is a very controlled person. She has control of her orchestra, her reputation, and her personal life. She wears meticulously tailored clothing. The only thing she can’t control is what other people think and feel and do, but she tries. Later in the film, while in Berlin, where Lydia lives, she approaches a child who has been bullying her daughter at school. A terrifying, towering Lydia, speaking in German, threatens the child. After this, her daughter is left alone. When Lydia is not in control, she loses control of herself and acts irrationally. This happens in small doses throughout the film, ultimately building up to her biggest, career-killing meltdown.

Blanchett is a meticulous, controlled performer. She is such an iconic film actress – one of the rare modern performers reminiscent of the stars of Old Hollywood – because she’s restrained and commanding. Every glance, every movement – from batting an eyelash to tapping a finger – is a conscious decision. In Tár, Blanchett, who has two Academy Awards (for The Aviator and Blue Jasmine) delivers the best performance of her three-decade career. Throughout the film, there’s a sense that you’re watching a documentary about a person you know. Blanchett’s performance is so authentic and so robust that Lydia Tár becomes more real than Blanchett or anyone in the theater. Lydia’s frigid nature, quite ironically, allows Blanchett to let loose and disappear into the role.

Blanchett is still making those controlled decisions in Tár and is still acting in the same way she’s always had, but she’s at her most absorbing and intoxicating because Blanchett’s love of control mirrors Lydia’s and in doing so, allows Blanchett to let go.
