The Weeknd And Swedish House Mafia Will Replace Kanye West As Coachella Headliners

Well, that was quick. Just days after Kanye West pulled out of headlining Coachella — allegedly to get his head on straight after months of juvenile social media antics — the festival has announced his replacement: A double act consisting of EDM supergroup Swedish House Mafia and ’80s pop revivalist The Weeknd.

Funnily enough, The Weeknd actually beat the actual festival in posting the new lineup on Twitter by about five minutes. That said, the fest’s official account quickly corroborated the new information by posting the flyer shortly after.

In the wake of Kanye’s withdrawal from the festival, there was plenty of speculation about who could take his place, with some sources positing everyone from Doja Cat to Justin Bieber. With Swedish House Mafia and The Weeknd, Coachella has found a pair of artists who collectively have the clout to fill the void left by West’s departure.

The Weeknd — who recently became the artist with the second-most diamond certifications in history — may use the headlining set as a dry run for his upcoming After Hours Til Dawn Tour with Doja Cat. The Canadian singer had pushed back the tour after finding that arenas were too constraining to do everything he wanted to do with the show, which will now take over stadiums in 18 cities, including his native Toronto.

A ‘Killing Eve’ Prequel Spinoff Is In The Works To Showcase A Younger Version Of A Spy Chief

Killing Eve is currently churning through its final season, and in my review, I politely requested a Konstantin spinoff, and it sure looks like I’m not getting one. Yet!

There’s still hope on the horizon, though, but the first order of business, it seems, is for BBC America and AMC Networks to bring the early story of a spy chief to life. That’d be Carolyn Martens, the high-ranking MI6 officer (and head of Russia’s desk) who may not have initially seemed like a spinoff-grade character, but they’ve been spicing her up, for sure, including a Season 3 arc that revealed her previous romance with Konstantin. Oh, and Carolyn also went HAM in the Season 3 finale while whipping out a gun and killing that weasel, Paul, after making Konstantin grovel for mercy.

Killing Eve Season 3 Finale
BBC America/AMC

Yup, it sure seems like they’ve been setting up Carolyn for more intrigue, given how she’s hell-bent upon vengeance for Kenny’s death in the present timeline. And that could build curiosity for seeing her origin story, especially since the show’s already included one for Villanelle. Deadline has confirmed (following The Sun newspaper’s first mention) the in-development goods, and it’ll probably be a prequel “likely looking into her time as young spook in the former Soviet Union.”

Bring in the young Dasha, too. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about spinoffs, either. Previously AMC Networks has signaled that this would be the drill as the show builds some sort of Eve-verse. Heck, why not. Season 4 looks like it’s building for the future, and now, things look set to build for the past as well.

The New ‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness’ Teaser Trailer Features A Devastating ‘WandaVision’ Reunion

With only a month to go until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sling rings into theaters, the latest teaser for the Benedict Cumberbatch starring sequel is going surprisingly big on the film’s WandaVision connections. Granted, previous trailers have shown Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff embracing her new identity as the Scarlet Witch, but in true Marvel style, there’s been little in the way of details on how exactly the Disney+ series will fully connect to the film. Well, the new teaser just dropped a pretty big clue.

In the spot, which also kicks off ticket sales for Multiverse of Madness, Wanda is seen reuniting with her twin sons, Billy and Tommy, who were revealed in the WandaVision finale to be illusions created by Wanda. However, in a post-credits scene for the show, Wanda hears their voices while studying the secrets of the Darkhold. As the teaser shows, Wanda does reunite with her sons, but only to watch them vanish in front of her eyes. She describes seeing her sons again as a recurring “nightmare,” but given the immense power of her chaos magic, and the presence of the multiverse, there’s a high probability the boys’ appearance is much more than just a bad dream.

Wanda’s obsession with seeing her children again also bolsters theories that the Scarlet Witch could very well be the film’s main villain or, at the very least, a wild card who causes the multiverse to unravel even further following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opens in theaters on May 6.

Olivia Rodrigo Opens Her ‘Sour’ Tour By Covering An Avril Lavigne Classic

In recent months, Olivia Rodrigo has been preparing for her first-ever tour, which kicked off in Portland, Oregon last night (April 5). While her Sour songs are enough to excite a crowd, Rodrigo worked a fantastic cover into her setlist, as Setlist.fm notes a few songs into the show, she performed Avril Lavigne’s classic single “Complicated.” Fan-shot videos from the performance show both Rodrigo and her audience getting super into the rendition:

The cover makes a ton of sense, given that the tune is the sort of music Sour was inspired by and that with only one album under her belt, Rodrigo doesn’t currently have a ton of original songs to perform live. So, including some covers in her setlist is a good move to flesh it out. In fact, “Complicated” wasn’t the only cover of the night, as she later performed Veruca Salt’s “Seether.”

In February, Lavigne spoke about Rodrigo, saying, “I met her a [few months] ago and it’s like she’s kind of going through what I went through. I wrote my first album when I was 16 and experienced crushes and like dating or whatever for the first time and how intense that feels and then writing songs and putting that into music. […] It’s so great because you’re putting all that into your art and it’s so real and people relate to that, and she’s great. It was so lovely meeting her and she’s doing amazing stuff.”

Watch Rodrigo cover “Complicated” above and find the full setlist for the April 5 concert here.

Jonathan Groff Compared A Possible Third Season Of ‘Mindhunter’ To ‘Frozen 3’

Mindhunter doesn’t currently appear on Netflix’s all-time top 10 most popular televison shows list, but don’t underestimate the crime thriller’s devoted fanbase. They are foaming at the mouth for more episodes. Executive producer David Fincher isn’t optimistic for a third season because it was an “expensive show,” and “on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs,” but director Asif Kapadia begged viewers to “let @netflix know that there is a real interest & demand for Season 3 of @MINDHUNTER… if you make enough noise, It might actually happen…”

As for star Jonathan Groff, he would return for a third season, but only if Fincher is involved. “The minute he says he wants to do another one, I’ll be there in a second. But I trust his vision and his instincts, and so I leave it always in his hands, as ever,” the Hamilton and The Matrix Resurrections actor told the Hollywood Reporter last year.

Groff appeared on Tuesday’s episode of The Tonight Show, where he was asked by host Jimmy Fallon to say which project is more likely: Mindhunter season three or Frozen 3? (Groff voices Kristoff in Frozen and Frozen 2.) “I feel like, even though those projects seem very different, Frozen and Mindhunter, I feel like a third Frozen and a third season of Mindhunter are equally possible,” he answered.

What does that mean? I don’t know! If only we had agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench to solve the case.

Jason Momoa Sounds Really Stoked About Working With One ‘Fast & Furious 10’ Actor In Particular

Jason Momoa hasn’t even started filming Fast & Furious 10 yet, and the release date is at least a year away, but the actor is already getting fans pumped for his villainous role in the high-octane film series. Heck, he’s pumped himself. While attending the Hollywood premiere of Ambulance this week, a stoked Momoa was more than willing to share some details about joining the Fast & Furious crew, and the one actor in particular that he can’t wait to work with for the first time.

Also, we can’t help but wonder if this is a bit of spoiler because it was never confirmed this actor would be returning, so fair warning if you like going into your Fast movies cold.

“I get to shoot with some really cool people that I have never — I get to work with Charlize [Theron] first up, which I’m really excited about,” Momoa told Entertainment Tonight. “She’s amazing.”

Once he got done gushing over Theron, Momoa made sure to note that his character is definitely going to mix things up with Vin Diesel. Although, again, Momoa couldn’t help but mention Theron again. Does Duncan Idaho have a new crush?

Momoa said he’s looking forward to working with Diesel as well, telling ET that fans can expect plenty of action-packed scenes between the pair.

“I’m sure that’s why they hired me,” Momoa joked. “But yeah, I’m excited I’m working with Vin. I’m excited I’m working with Charlize.”

As for his Fast & Furious 10 character, Momoa was light on details, but he did give fans a little taste of what to expect. “He’s amazing. He’s ornery. He’s misunderstood.”

Sean Penn Flat Out Told Sean Hannity That He Doesn’t Trust Him (Before The Two Had A Civilized Discussion On Ukraine)

Sean Penn recently promised to “smelt” his Academy Awards if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky didn’t make a virtual appearance at the recent ceremony, and there’s been no update there (an appearance didn’t happen). However, the Gaslit star did meet with Zelensky while filming a documentary, and Penn was on the ground when Russia attacked. The actor ended up fleeing to Poland on foot, and now, he’s visiting with Sean Hannity on Fox News.

The interview began awkwardly (as you can see in the above clip, straight off the bat) with Hannity detailing how he’d contacted Penn after hearing about the in-process documentary when war broke out. And then Hannity asked Penn to tell the audience how that conversation started.

Hannity: “Do you remember what you first said to me?”

Penn: “I said that I don’t trust you.”

At that point, Penn elaborated about how he didn’t see the lack of trust as a hurdle. “You know, there are so many people that don’t trust their spouse,” Penn declared. “And yet we have got to get on with life… we have got a situation. I’ve never felt this way about where our country is and what I experienced emotionally in Ukraine, where it had not… we all talk about how divisive things are, how divided things are here.”

The conversation continued quite amicably from there with the two agreeing to disagree on the Biden administration and Penn detailing how he hoped to capture, in his documentary, the unity and the resilience of the Ukrainian people. He also mentioned how he’d originally been captivated by Zelensky’s rise — after portraying an ordinary citizen who accidentally became president in Servant Of The People — and that’s part of why the documentary process began.

Further to the trust point, Penn also discuss how he, as an American, has plenty of “time to indulge my lack of trust, which it becomes a petty thing,” and Ukrainians don’t have that luxury “as people and babies are being vaporized, and that these people are fighting for the very dreams that are the aspiration of all of us Americans.” The entire conversation’s worth watching, and it’s certainly a civilized segment that one rarely sees from opponents on cable news.

Ed Sheeran Speaks After Winning His Copyright Case Over Alleged ‘Shape Of You’ Plagiarism

For years now, Ed Sheeran has been dealing with a copyright case over alleged plagiarism on “Shape Of You.” Now, it’s finally over: This morning’s verdict was ruled in favor of Sheeran, co-writer Johnny McDaid, and producer Steve McCutcheon, NME reports.

In the ruling, Justice Zacaroli declared Sheeran “neither deliberately nor subconsciously” copied a phrase from Sami Switch’s “Oh Why” when writing “Shape Of You.” They also noted that while the song have similarities, “such similarities are only a starting point for a possible infringement” of copyright.

Now that the trial is finally over, Sheeran has spoken out. He said in a minute-long video shared on Instagram a few hours ago:

“Hey guys. Me, Jonny, and Steve have made a joint statement that will be press released on the outcome of this case, but I wanted to make a small video to talk about it a bit because I’ve not really been able to say anything whilst it’s been going on.

While we’re obviously happy with the result, I feel like claims like this are way too common now and have become a culture where a claim is made with the idea that a settlement would be cheaper than taking it to court, even if there’s no base to the claim, is really damaging to the songwriting industry. There’s only so many notes and very few cords used in pop music. Coincidence is bound to happen if 60,000 songs are being released every day on Spotify. That’s 22 million songs a year and there’s only 12 notes that are available.

I don’t want take anything away from the pain and hurt suffered from both sides of this case, but I just want to say I’m not an entity, I’m not a corporation: I’m a human being, I’m a father, I’m a husband, I’m a son. Lawsuits are not a pleasant experience and I hope with this ruling, it means in the future, baseless claims like this can be avoided. This really does have to end.

Me, Johnny, and Steve are very grateful for all the support sent to us by fellow songwriters over the last few weeks. Hopefully we can all get back to writing songs rather than having to prove that we can write them. Thank you.”

As for the statement Sheeran mentioned, read that in full below.

“Here was a lot of talk throughout this case about cost. But there is more than just a financial cost. There is a cost on creativity. When we are tangled up in lawsuits, we are not making music or playing shows.

There is a cost on our mental health. The stress this causes on all sides is immense. It affects so many aspects of our everyday lives and the lives of our families and friends. We are not corporations. We are not entities. We are human beings. We are songwriters. We do not want to diminish the hurt and pain anyone has suffered through this, and at the same time, we feel it is important to acknowledge that we too have had our own hurts and life struggles throughout the course of this process.

There is an impact on both us and the wider circle of songwriters everywhere. Our hope in having gone through all of this, is that it shows that there is a need for a safe space for all songwriters to be creative, and free to express their hearts. That is why we all got into this in the first place. Everyone should be able to freely express themselves in music, in art and do so fearlessly.

At the same time, we believe that there should be due process for legitimate and warranted copyright protection. However, that is not the same as having a culture where unwarranted claims are easily brought. This is not constructive or conducive to a culture of creativity.

We are grateful that Mr. Justice Zacaroli has delivered a clear and considered judgment which supports the position we have argued from the outset. ‘Shape Of You’ is original. We did not copy the Defendants’ song.

We respect the music of those who’ve come before us and have inspired us along the way, whoever they are. We have always sought to clear or to acknowledge our influences and collaborators. It doesn’t matter how successful something appears to be, we still respect it. It is so painful to hear someone publicly, and aggressively, challenge your integrity.

It is so painful to have to defend yourself against accusations that you have done something that you haven’t done and would never do.

We are very grateful for all the messages of love, hope and support we received throughout the course of this case from songwriters everywhere. Thank you also to our publishers, who stood shoulder to shoulder with us at every step of the way. We are privileged to do what we do, and we know that. We want to live in a world where we are free to do what we do, openly and honorably.

While this has been one of the most difficult things we have ever been through in our professional lives, we will continue to stand up against baseless claims, and protect our rights and the integrity of our musical creativity, so we that can continue to make music, always.

Our message to songwriters everywhere is: Please support each other. Be kind to one another. Let’s continue to cultivate a spirit of community and creativity.”

Ed Sheeran is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

‘The Masked Singer’ Creator Has Defended Rudy Giuliani’s Controversial Appearance On The Show

In February, Deadline reported that Rudy Giuliani would appear in an episode of The Masked Singer this season, prompting a walk-out from judges Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke. Don’t give the disgraced “Blurred Lines” singer too much credit, though: Thicke only left because “he and Ken are very close friends and he wanted to check on him. Robin didn’t storm out because of Giuliani,” a source told People. That cursed episode still hasn’t aired yet, but with the season finale coming up on May 17, we’re mere days or weeks away from seeing whatever monstrosity Giuliani is “masked” as.

In an interview with Deadline, The Masked Singer creator Wonwoo Park was asked about Giuliani’s appearance on the American adaptation of the South Korean singing competition program. “It would be taboo [in Korea] to have someone controversial or political on the show,” he explained. “But it can’t always be pleasant when the mask comes off and the more Masked Singer seasons [globally] we do, the more we realize you can’t always have contestants that everybody loves.”

So far this season, McTerrier (chef Duff Goldman), Ram (announcer Joe Buck), Cyclops (Lost star Jorge Garcia), Thingamabob (Philadelphia Eagles tackle Jordan Mailata), and Lemur (model Christie Brinkley) have been unmasked, leaving Armadillo, Baby Mammoth, Firefly, Hydra, Jack in the Box, Miss Teddy, The Prince, Ram, Ringmaster, Space Bunny, and Queen Cobra. My money’s on Rudy being Jack in the Box: he’s a clown who pops up when you least expect him to, and it’s never a good time.
