Elite athletes face unnecessary roadblocks when they get pregnant. Time for that to change.

Pregnancy is, without a doubt, one of the most amazing physical feats on Earth. A body that builds a baby practically from scratch is badass no matter how you look at it, but unfortunately, it’s not always treated that way.

That can be particularly true in fields that focus on peak body performance, such as elite sports.

Professional female athletes are often put in the position of having to choose between their athletic career and starting a family, not merely due to the inherent reality of having kids, but due to unnecessary roadblocks imposed upon them by the powers that be.

Elite track and field star Allyson Felix famously beat Usain Bolt’s gold medal count record a mere 10 months after having a baby—prematurely, via emergency c-section after experiencing pre-eclampsia, no less. She also famously took Nike to task for trying to cut her pay by 70% during her pregnancy. Her critique, along with a push from other female athletes and outcry from the public, resulted in Nike creating a new maternity policy for sponsored athletes guaranteeing an athlete’s pay and bonuses for 18 months around pregnancy.

But it’s not just corporate sponsors that create obstacles for mom athletes. There is also a lack of supportive maternity policies for elite athletes who get pregnant that create a great deal of fear and uncertainty about their careers.

One issue is that pregnancy often isn’t viewed as a normal part of life for an athlete. Canada’s Athlete Assistance Program, for example, puts pregnancy in the same category as injury or illness, when it is neither. As Bill Moreau, managing director of sports medicine for the U.S. Olympic Committee in 2012 told NBC, “Pregnancy isn’t a disability.”

Female athletes are often afraid to share that they are pregnant.

Researchers at the University of Alberta conducted a study of what pregnant athletes go through and to determine what kind of policies might best support elite athletes going through the process of having a child. The study authors recruited 20 athletes who had trained or competed at the elite level just before becoming pregnant and talked with them about their experiences.

“They described the complexities related to planning for pregnancy when training,” the authors shared in The Conversation. “They told us heartbreaking stories about how they were scared to disclose that they were pregnant over fear they would lose their position on the team, lose funding or even be viewed as less committed to their sport.”

“This needs to change,” they added.

One athlete in the study shared that there is a very narrow window in which athletes can get pregnant in an Olympic cycle to be successful. Another shared, “I feel like I can’t have open communication [with coaches] because I’m so afraid of what will be taken from me.”

“There’s so little support and there’s so little value given to pregnant athletes and to women who want to be able to be mothers and compete,” study author and professor of kinesiology Tara-Leigh McHugh told the CBC. “We need to start to normalize and value pregnancy … to demonstrate that it is possible and women can actually succeed and thrive as mother athletes.”

Plenty of athletes have had record-breaking performances during or after pregnancy.

Pregnancy does change a woman’s body, but the limitations it may impose are temporary.

Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon won the 1500m gold medal in the 2017 London Olympics, then came back to the Olympics in Tokyo in 2021 and took the gold again—while also breaking the Olympic record for the event. In the four years between those Olympic wins, she had a baby. While she said returning to top athletic form was not easy after pregnancy and childbirth, the physical feat of building a baby clearly did not diminish her athletic abilities.

There have actually been athletes who have won Olympic medals while they were pregnant. And let’s not forget Serena Williams winning her record-breaking 23rd grand slam while pregnant. Each sport has different physical demands that may or may not be affected by various stages of pregnancy, but an athlete shouldn’t have to fear that having a baby will diminish their opportunities at best or cost them their career at worst.

Athletes face challenges in their field after having a baby as well, especially when rules are imposed without reasonable maternity exceptions. Canadian basketball player Kim Gaucher nearly had to forgo the Toyko Olympics because she was breastfeeding her 3-month-old and family members were not allowed to accompany athletes due to pandemic restrictions. She had to petition for an exception, which took until shortly before the games began to be approved.

Elite athletes need more supportive policies for maternity while training and competing.

The University of Alberta researchers shared recommendations that they said can be implemented immediately. “The development of maternity leave policies and funding structures for parental leave should be a priority for sporting organizations,” they wrote. “Providing education to athletes, coaches and organizations about reproductive health should also occur in an effort to normalize pregnancy in sport, and work towards a more inclusive environment for female athletes.”

One element of such policy is getting a better understanding, through research, of the impact of athletic training on pregnancy and vice versa.

“We don’t have a lot of information about what is safe and beneficial for athletes who are regularly exceeding current recommendations,” study co-author Maggie Davenport shared on CBC’s Radio Active.

The researchers also pointed out that such policies are vital for young female athletes as they rise in their sports.

“Policies to support pregnant athletes will have a direct impact on all women and girls across all levels of sport,” the study authors wrote. “Role models are essential to girls’ continued participation in sport. Young girls need to know that they belong in sport, and that there is a space for them in sport even when they enter their reproductive years.”

Indeed, normalizing maternity in sports—and in every field—will open up more opportunities for women, letting them know they won’t have to choose between creating a family and pursuing their professions.

Artist takes the best ‘good news’ stories and transforms them into masterful illustrations

At Upworthy, we know a thing or two about the challenges that come with trying to spread good news in a world that tends to thrive on negativity. There are two main reasons why bad news makes the headlines, whereas the good stuff tends to be hidden on the back page.

First, people have evolved to pay attention to things that could be a potential threat. Hence, why crime, war, and political outrage are usually the top stories of the day. Second, good news sometimes doesn’t happen overnight.

“Obviously sudden, noteworthy, and rare events are the ones that make headlines, whereas long-term slow, steady, incremental progress is just not as interesting,” Chelsea Follett, Editor of Human Progress, another positivity site, told Upworthy.

ICS D, an illustration who prefers to remain anonymous, has created a wonderful Instagram page where they illustrate good news headlines so “so you won’t forget them,” they told Upworthy.

Unnewscessary presents fun, dramatic visualizations of the day’s positive news headlines to show people what they may have missed and to make the stories “easy to remember.”

ICS D started the project in 2019, just before the pandemic hit. They started with a goal of doing 100 illustrations of news items that “cannot be photographed,” but the work soon became an addiction.

They’re proud to have posted dozens of positive news stories over the past two years, even though we’ve been living through a pandemic. “When you look over the whole gallery, given that most of them are good news, you can see what went well in the last two awful years,” they told Upworthy.

Waxworms eat plastic and poop alcohol

The Instagram page has received a lot of positive responses, but ICS D’s favorite was when a scientist contacted them out of the blue. “I got an email from a scientist that told me he’s the one that made the discovery about waxworms that I illustrated. He was in awe!” they said.

ICS D believes that a lot of people are missing out on positive stories because they lack eye-catching share images.

“Some very interesting stories get lost in our feed because they have an ordinary cover picture, like a stock image that doesn’t say much,” they wrote at Behance. “That’s because some subjects are too abstract to be photographed, so editors are pairing them with something neutral and insipid.”

Here are 17 of the most memorable good news illustrations at Unnewscessary. Take a good look, you may have missed these headlines when they first came out.

10 things that made us smile this week

It can be easy to poo-poo positivity when the world feels like a giant flaming trash bin. And it’s true that “toxic” brands of positivity that admonish people to simply put a smile on their face instead of empathizing or addressing the causes and effects of suffering are b.s.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t look for happiness in hard times. Finding delight in small things can be a lifeline when times are tough, and our ability to wield beauty and joy to spite the darkness is part of what makes humankind so amazing.

Sometimes we struggle to find solutions to problems, sometimes we have to fight against despair, and sometimes we just put one foot in front of the other to make it through the day. But we never know what little thing might spark something in our spirit, giving us just enough energy or hope to keep up our good work in this world.

Not that a hilarious dog dancing video is going to be life-changing, but if we allow ourselves to take a cleansing plunge into wholesome delight once in a while, we might emerge feeling more refreshed and ready for whatever it is we have to face.

And so we present this pool of 10 things that made us smile this week for us all to dive into. Enjoy.

The beauty and solidarity of music transcends borders.

Top violinists around the world joined Illia Bondarenko and other Ukrainian violinists who are hiding out in shelters in playing a Ukrainian folk song. It’s a gorgeously haunting show of solidarity, reminding us of the humanity that connects us all. Read the full story here.

This 13-year-old with his heart-melting attempt to do something special for his mom.

[Gulp.] Be right back, grabbing a tissue.

Gonna watch this doggo dancing just a dozen or so more times.

“Shake, shake shake, senora!.” Go, doggy, go.

Kitten thinks he’s a rabbit. Seriously. Adorable.

I wrote an article this week about why rabbits make the best indoor pets, but kittens are right up there. Combining the two? Priceless.

So many jokes about Tom Brady returning to football after getting a taste of full-time parenting.

When legendary quarterback Tom Brady announced that he was unretiring from the NFL a mere 40 days after he retired, the jokes started flying. He seems like a great dad, but the idea that he’d prefer to be pummeled by 300-pound linemen to coordinating kid activities was too much for the people of the internet to resist. The 5-hour dance rehearsal is spot on.

This kid knows how to create a calm reading environment.

And kudos to his teacher for encouraging him. This kid will definitely be going places.

Speaking of kids going places, gotta love seeing a dream come true in real time.

Congratulations, Lynnea!

Quokkas are always good for a smile, but this one enjoying a beet is just beyond.

Along with Hugh Jackman, the naturally smiley quokka is one of the greatest gifts Australia has given the world.

Because I can never get enough of pandas being playful…

Seriously, pandas are just little kids in bear suits. It’s the only explanation.

And if none of that did it for you, feel free to join forces with this entirely unimpressed new human.

We feel you, little one. It’ll get better, we promise. Or at least hope. We’re working on it.

Hope that washed away some of the muck and mire. Come back next for another cleansing plunge into small delights.

GAYLE’s ‘Luv Starved’ Video Ushers In Her Debut EP, ‘A Study Of The Human Experience Volume One’

As the top-5 reign of the hit single ‘ABCDEFU’ continues on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, GAYLE celebrates today’s release of her debut EP, A Study Of The Human Experience Volume One.

It’s a big day for the 17-year-old Nashville pop sensation, who also dropped a new video for the project’s opening track, “Luv Starved.” In the clip, she goes from singing in a greenhouse to sulking in an empty movie theater before letting it all out on a grand piano as the song reaches an explosive crescendo.

Thinking about the emotions of the release of her debut, GAYLE shared a heartfelt statement on what it means to her:

“When i was younger, i had an image in my head of who i was to be as i got older. how i was going to act, dress, what type of friends i would have, and the things i wouldn’t do until i was married or twenty one. Then i grew up and stuck to none of it. for a while, i didn’t know why the things that were so important to me when i was younger no longer were important. Then i realized what i wanted in life had just changed, and that’s ok. a study of the human experience volume one is about my life experiences and the experiences of those i collaborated with on this project. for me, growing up is all about making mistakes and learning from them. it just sucks sometimes that i have to make so many to learn.”

Watch the video for “Luv Starved” above.

A Study Of The Human Experience Volume One is out now via Atlantic Records. Get it here.

In Case You Were Wondering, Ben Affleck And Ana De Armas Did A ‘Great Job’ With Their ‘Deep Water’ Snail Co-Stars

Over the past week, Ana de Armas has posted on Instagram about the sunset, night shoots, and her dog, but there’s not a single mention of her new movie. It’s not hard to figure out why: Deep Water brought her and Ben Affleck together, but before the shamelessly sleazy movie could be released, they broke up. There will be no (extremely awkward) press tour — or mention of the erotic thriller on social media either, apparently.

So, who’s left to promote Deep Water? The film’s “snail wrangler,” obviously.

Snails play a big role in Deep Water, as Vic (Affleck) keeps a room full of the slimy gastropods in the house he shares with his wife Melinda (de Armas). “I’d say it’s fairly accurate,” handler Max Anton told Entertainment Weekly about the snail room. “Vic’s setup is the prettiest way it should look with these big glass tanks.” He also praised Affleck’s commitment to not stepping on any snails and/or turning them into escargot.

“Ben was fantastic to work with. He’s a great listener. And you can tell that when he does his scenes, he will take instructions. He understands them, and usually, he can nail it the first time. He was exceptionally good with my animals. We didn’t lose a single one.”

As for de Armas, she “did not want to touch them,” according to Anton, but “despite being not okay with the snails, she did a great job too.”

Snails apparently live for between two to five years, which means they outlasted de Armas and Affleck’s relationship. Congrats to the snails.

A Same-Sex Kiss In Pixar’s Upcoming Movie ‘Lightyear’ Was Apparently Taken Out And Then Put Back In

It’s been a rough few weeks for Disney and Pixar employees, who have received unheard-of backlash for the very witty and age-appropriate movie Turning Red featuring a plot point about menstruation. In addition to that debacle, employees at Pixar Animation Studios pushed for Disney to do something in the wake of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill, and they were effectively silenced, which led to a rebellion and joint statement made to The Walt Disney Company, demanding that the company take a stance on prominent LGBTQ issues, and to stop “cutting gay affection” from their movies. For once, Disney actually…listened?

According to Variety, the upcoming Toy Story spinoff Lightyear features a female character, Hawthorne (played by Uzo Aduba) in a relationship with another woman. Allegedly, a kiss between the two animated characters was cut from the film. Now, the kiss seems to have been reinstated after the employee backlash.

Former Pixar employees anonymously spoke to Variety and confirmed that plot points about LGBTQ characters were frequently shot down, with same-sex relationships either edited out or left to just background characters that appear onscreen for less than a second. Fans even believe that Turning Red originally had a queer character that must have been cut, though there has been no confirmation of this.

Despite the constant pushback, there have been very few LGBTQ hints in Pixar movies, but perhaps this kiss will be the first step towards some more representation…if they do decide to keep it in, after all.

Phoebe Bridgers’ Favorite Taylor Swift Song Is A ‘Folklore’ Highlight

Phoebe Bridgers had an opportunity most artists dream about when she got to collaborate with Taylor Swift, on “Nothing New (Taylor’s Version)” from Red (Taylor’s Version). Like many of us, Bridgers has been a Swift fan for years, and on a recent episode of Charli XCX’s Best Song Ever podcast, Bridgers made her pick for her favorite Swift song (as NME notes).

After Charli asked, Bridgers was quick to choose Folklore highlight “Betty,” saying:

“I like when songwriters make you decide what’s so sad about this person. It’s kind of not the movie version of a love story. You have a crush on someone and then you hook up with someone else because your feelings for them overwhelm you? That’s so f*cking sad. I think it’s genius. And then we kind of don’t really know what happens at the end of it.”

She also just noted of Swift’s music in general, “It’s high art. She’s like the king of her craft. She’s just a perfect example of someone who uses all the resources at her disposal to be completely genuine.” About what it was like to work on Red (Taylor’s Version), Bridgers also said, “I can’t imagine getting to sing on a cooler project. I connect with that song so much. It’s a masterpiece.”

Lil Nas X Celebrates Beating ‘The Horse Boy Allegations’ As ‘Call Me By Your Name’ Passes ‘Old Town Road’ On Spotify

Lil Nas X proved he wasn’t just a one-hit-wonder long ago — multiple times, no less — but he still seemed pretty amped to learn that one of his Montero singles finally surpassed his breakout hit on DSPs. Now that he’s returned to Twitter, he had the perfect joke for the occasion, too. “Just found out call me by your name passed old town road in streams,” he announced. “We beat the horse boy allegations.”

He’s joking — sort of, and also always — but there was a time the TikTok-trend sparking “Old Town Road” was Nas’ signature hit. He performed in full cowboy regalia for nearly a solid year and even admits that by the end of the song’s monstrous, historical run, he was growing a little tired of it. And while he was able to produce bangers like “Panini,” “Rodeo,” and “Holiday” in the aftermath of “OTR’s” dominance, it almost looked like he would be known solely by his first hit.

Then “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” dropped as the first single to his debut album Montero, and rather than being the horse boy, he’d become the devil man, with the video for his second No. 1 hit setting off seismic waves of speculation and disconcerted, sputtering backlash from conservative commentators. That would have been enough to wipe away the “one-hit-wonder” tag, but then he dropped “Industry Baby” to garner his third No. 1, just for good measure.

A Legendary And Ultra-Rare Marvel Comic Just Sold To A Mystery Buyer For So, So Much Money

A super-rare edition of Marvel Comics #1, the first Marvel book to ever be printed, just sold at auction for a whopping $2.4 million, a slight increase in value from its original sale price in 1939: 10 cents. The comic, which features the first appearances of classic characters like the original Human Torch and Sub-Mariner, is a particularly unique find not just because of its age and collectibility, but for the extra notes handwritten in the issue. The “extremely passionate” mystery buyer, whose identity has yet to be revealed, clearly knew his Marvel history and had the millions to pay for it.

Via Associated Press:

The very well-preserved “pay copy” is especially sought-after because it bears the publisher’s handwritten notes recording how much each writer and artist was paid.

“It’s an incredibly important look into the world and behind the scenes of the creation” of a comics powerhouse, [ComicConnect COO Vincent] Zurzolo said.

You can see the cover of the ultra-rare Marvel Comics #1 below:

Marvel Comics #1
Marvel Comics

As we now know, Marvel Comics would become one of the biggest names in comics along with its fierce competitor DC Comics. Known as the Big Two, the companies were cutthroat rivals who shamelessly copied each other, poached talents, and basically did everything possible to dominate comic book sales. Now, they’re both media empires churning out cinematic hits like Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Batman.

And to think it all started for Marvel with a guy who could light himself on fire at will and a dude who was super good at swimming. Later, they’d both fight against Hitler, as was the fashion at the time.

A ‘Euphoria’ Fan Literally Saw Himself In The Show…On The Infamous INXS Album Cover

A lot of people metaphorically see themselves on TV, when they can identify with characters and their storylines. But not many people actually see a photo of themselves on the screen, except for Jim Carey in The Truman Show. But that happened to 29-year-old Copenhagen resident Alexander Burchardt when he was watching a season two episode of HBO’s Euphoria.

In the scene, a character goes to a jukebox and settles on INXS’s classic 1987 hit “Never Tear Us Apart.” When the camera pans over the album artwork, many eagle-eyed viewers noticed the cover looked more like an off-brand version of the official artwork. When Burchardt was watching the episode, he saw himself.

“It was me. In the split second, we see the album cover, I saw it and I got so confused,” Burchardt told Rolling Stone. “You’d be surprised how easily you could recognize yourself when you least expect it. I remember that photoshoot [and] the clothes I was wearing but I was shocked. We thought it was impossible so we rewound the scene, paused again, and looked, and my girlfriend was screaming.”

As it turns out, Burchardt, like many twenty-somethings in the early 2000s, decided to take up modeling. The photos ended up on iStock, a stock image website, where the Euphoria art department likely found the photos in order to re-create the cover, likely due to licensing issues.

An entertainment lawyer confirmed to Rolling Stone that publicity laws are probably to blame. The show was able to secure the rights to their song but perhaps didn’t want to go to the trouble of securing the artwork for just a second of screentime. “The fact that they used the track itself — and that’s assuming they likely had the rights to use the song — coupled with them stripping the album cover so substantially [and] then changing the musicians out with stock images makes me think it was more because of a potential name and likeness or right of publicity concern,” Lawyer Christiane Kinney said.

So, even though an iStock model isn’t exactly the same as using the real photo featuring frontman Michael Hutchence, it gives Burchardt a great story to tell…and maybe an acting credit?
