Child actors don’t necessarily stay actors forever. Take Ke Huy Quan. As a kid he appeared in both Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, as plucky sidekick Short Round, and in The Goonies. As work dried up, he went to film school and rebranded as a stunt coordinator and assistant director. Now he’s an actor again and he earned raves — and awards — as Michelle Yeoh’s sweetly dorky husband inEverything Everywhere All at Once. But he was only able to do it with some help from a fellow Goonie who hasn’t gone back to acting.
In a roundtable interview for The Hollywood Reporter (in a bit caught by The AV Club), Quan revealed that he was able to ink the Everything Everywhere deal with his lawyer, Jeff Cohen. The name might not sound familiar, but nearly four decades ago he co-starred with Quan in The Goonies. He played Chunk, the portly kid prone to screaming and who befriends Sloth (the late John Matuszak), the deformed son of Anne Ramsey’s dastardly Mama Fratelli.
Like Quan, as he got older, Cohen stayed in the industry. He just moved to a different part of it: He became an entertainment lawyer. His talent came in handy when Quan was being courted for his comeback role.
“When the producer of our movie was trying to make my deal, he said he never imagined that he’d have to talk to Chunk and Data for his movie,” referring to the roles he and Cohen played some 38 years ago. When asked if Cohen got him a good deal, Quan responded, “Jeff is an outstanding lawyer.”
So, good for Quan and good for Cohen, who stayed in touch and teamed up to bring one of the best performances of last year to the screen. Keep in touch with your childhood pals, including the ones you work with. You might help each other one day.
In July, McMahon and Nick Khan stepped into co-CEO positions following the ousting of Vince McMahon amidst allegations of misconduct, millions of dollars in reported settlements, and investigations into other nondisclosure agreements. Stephanie also assumed the role of Chairwoman. The latest move removes Stephanie from the business side of the company altogether, acknowledging Vince McMahon as the Executive Chair who is “leading the exciting process regarding strategic alternatives.”
As part of Stephanie McMahon’s statement, she also pointed to Nick Khan’s “leadership” and that Paul Levesque will remain Chief Content Officer.
Vince McMahon has started the process of selling WWE with his official return to the company last Friday, where he elected himself to WWE’s board of directors, along with former co-presidents and directors Michelle Wilson and George Barrios. The move came one day after it was reported from the Wall Street Journal that “unless (McMahon) has direct involvement as executive chairman from the outset of a strategic review, he won’t support or approve any media-rights deal or sale.” The move essentially holds WWE from negotiating television deals for its flagship programs, Raw or Smackdown, as well as his apparent goal of selling the company unless he is directly involved.
According to PWInsider, Vince McMahon’s return could spark a lawsuit from the board. But that possibility of that apparently wasn’t enough to keep Stephanie McMahon around.
Indie music has grown to include so much. It’s not just music that is released on independent labels but speaks to an aesthetic that deviates from the norm and follows its own weirdo heart. It can come in the form of rock music, pop, or folk. In a sense, it says as much about the people that are drawn to it as it does about the people that make it.
Every week, Uproxx is rounding up the best new indie music from the past seven days. This week we got new music from White Reaper, Mount Eerie, Belle And Sebastian, Runnner, and more.
While we’re at it, sign up for our newsletter to get the best new indie music delivered directly to your inbox, every Monday.
Nicole Dollanganger — Married In Mount Airy
Nicole Dollanganger’s music never seems to lose its power. Married In Mount Airy successfully haunts and endears its listener, with her striking, high-pitched voice feeling hypnotic against sparkling sonic backgrounds. Each song feels like an intense scene from a movie.
White Reaper — “Pink Slip”
White Reaper’s mischievous Asking For A Ride arrives at the end of this month, and each single has been a fiery treat. “Pink Slip” is no less catchy and intense than the previous singles; the riffs are heavy and infectious with the texture of recklessness is at an all-time high. The energy is contagious and the LP is sure to be a rollercoaster.
Mount Eerie — “Huge Fire”
On the Colors compilation album, “Huge Fire” by Mount Eerie is a haunting song with a powerful atmosphere of grief. It’s packed with vivid, cinematic lyricism: “I carry it into the night / I walk, and there’s a fire, but it’s at my back,” Phil Elverum sings.
The Hold Steady — “Sideways Skull”
“Sideways Skull” is the compelling first single from The Hold Steady’s just-announced new album The Price of Progress arriving in March. It kicks off strong: “She ordered me Newcastle / And handed me a Marlboro,” frontman Craig Finn sings against snarky riffs.
Runnner — “NYE”
Runnner’s Like Dying Stars, We’re Reaching Out is set to be one of the most subtly devastating albums of 2023. Similar to Elverum, Noah Weinman’s songs reckon with wreckage: “New Year’s Eve at home recording / Thinking: ‘how’d I get so boring?’ / And how I miss my friends, my loves / Am I choosing what’s important?” he sings on “NYE.”
Black Belt Eagle Scout — “Nobody”
A pink sunset glows in the video for Black Belt Eagle Scout’s transcendent new song “Nobody,” and it looks as comforting and evocative as the music is. The guitars soar and Katherine Paul’s breathy vocals are poignant as she sings poetic lines: “Yeah I feel it in my bones / And I find it through my home.”
Belle And Sebastian — “I Don’t Know What You See In Me”
Belle And Sebastian didn’t hold back on their exuberant new song “I Don’t Know What You See In Me.” It’s a big, buzzing anthem fueled by determination and refusal to relent: “I don’t know what you see in me / But I know I’m not about to give you up.”
Faim — “Opus”
Is there a better way to start the year than with an abrasive, clamoring hardcore song? “Opus” by Faim abides by no rules, moving to its own (incredibly fast) pace. It’s cathartic, only intensifying as it goes on. Also, there are two vocalists yelling together, making them a powerful force.
Bratty — “Continental”
“Continental” by Bratty is a breezy track. She teamed up with Nsqk and Méne, and the song bounces with a feel-good vibe, reminiscent of the summer. Still, it hits in the winter and only helps us look forward to days of sunshine and dancing.
The New Pornographers — “Really Really Light”
The New Pornographers just announced their ninth studio album Continue As A Guest arriving in March. “Really Really Light” is the first single as well as the opening track. Off the bat, it’s a noisy, jangly song full of memorable melodies and entrancing harmonies. It’s a promising preview.
What’s more, Jai Paul is performing his first live show ever. The 34-year-old songwriter and producer is known for his enigmatic nature. Fellow Coachella performer Kaytranda expressed enthusiasm on Twitter: “forget about me performing, i’m going to see Jai Paul.”
forget about me performing, i’m going to see Jai Paul
Paul returned in 2019 with his first material since his debut album leak in 2013. “I wanted to use this opportunity to share a little information about what happened regarding my music in April 2013,” he wrote at the time. “As you may know, some of my unfinished demos were put up for sale illegally via Bandcamp. The leak consisted of a fairly random collection of tracks I had made over quite a long period of time (from roughly 2007 to 2013), in various stages of completion. Some are short skits and beats from my MySpace page back in the day before I signed a record deal. A large proportion of this music was to be completed and released officially in some format.”
He’ll be performing Sunday, April 16 and 23, the same days as Ocean.
The Dallas Cowboys visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. The Cowboys have won 12 games in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1995 under head coach Mike McCarthy, who was hired in 2020 to bring playoff success to the franchise after Jason Garrett’s tenure frequently ended with the team getting eliminated earlier than expected. Although McCarthy has provided regular season success, and even an NFC East championship in 2021, he has yet to secure a playoff win — Dallas hosted the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card round last season, but suffered an embarrassing loss by running the clock out on a quarterback draw.
Firing a coach after consecutive 12-win seasons seems counterintuitive, but the Cowboys limped to the end of regular season by barely beating a 1-win Texans team, blowing a 17-point lead to the Jaguars, and getting embarrassed by a Commanders team that had nothing to play for and started a rookie quarterback. But despite any belief that McCarthy might be in trouble if the team sees its postseason come to a premature end, Jerry Jones went on a local radio station this week to dispel that notion.
“No,” Jones said when asked if an early loss could lead to McCarthy losing his job. “I don’t even want to … no. That’s it. I don’t need to go into all the pluses or minuses, but I’ve got a lot more to evaluate Mike McCarthy on than this playoff game.”
Jones is known for talking a big game, but if the Cowboys lose on Monday night — especially if it’s in an embarrassing manor — it will be interesting to see how he manages McCarthy.
AMC’s Interview With The Vampire actually ended up being better than the Tom Cruise movie while updating the Anne Rice books for the big screen. I say “books” because the show earned a swift renewal before even premiering, so the show will go further. Also, the series been such a fan pleaser while adding new (historical and updated) layers to both Louis and Lestat, along with Claudia, whose tale is even more crushing than the version played by Kirsten Dunst. Another Rice book series, Mayfair Witches, recently saw its adaptation premiere on AMC, and while that show hasn’t been met with as much enthusiasm, Rice devotees will like the news that’s coming.
While speaking on Tuesday at AMC’s Television Critics Association presentation, executive producer Mark Johnson has explained that he’s got an overarching plan for both shows that includes a “crossover.” Johnson also reveals that there are “ongoing” talks on how to stop simply dropping easter eggs and make Lestat murder a murder of crows or something. Alright, I made up that detail, so here’s what Johnson actually said, according to Deadline:
“You’ll see a lot of connections, both in terms of characters in terms of geography… I guess almost like Easter eggs. We very much want to tie the worlds together in a way that makes sense. Of course, they’re completely separate on the one hand, but thematically and in terms of how Anne Rice deals with character, we want to find a way to have that flow throughout the various shows.”
Given that Interview hops back and forth in time and setting, and Anne Rice did incorporateMayfair Witches as part of The Vampire Chronicles, none of this talk seems out of the realm of possibility. In the new show, Alexandra Daddario stars as a neurosurgeon who happens to discover that she’s part of a long witchy legacy. The Mayfair Witches premiered on January 8, and Interview With The Vampire‘s first full season can be streamed on AMC+.
For over 20 years, Hugh Jackman has been playing Wolverine, arguably the most popular mutant member of the X-Men. It made him a household name, establishing him as one of the biggest movie stars in the world. But it also did something else for him: It taught him that wolverines are real.
The stage and screen star recently appeared on HBO’s Who’s Talking To Chris Wallace, where he denied using steroids to get all ripped for his most iconic role. He also revealed something a bit embarrassing. For one thing, they don’t have wolverines — a small but ferocious loner found primarily in boreal forests and subarctic areas — in his native Australia. Not only had Jackman never read the X-Men comic, he never read the biology textbook that mentions the existence of wolverines.
“I didn’t know that was a real animal. I’d never heard of a wolverine,” Jackman confessed. “I thought it was a made-up animal. You know, like, he’s got man hands of steel, made up. And so I was passing as I was doing rehearsal at the IMAX, they had this documentary about wolves. And I was like, perfect, because obviously I’m a wolf, part wolf.”
And so Jackman showed up impersonating the wrong animal. “So I went [to set] with all these wolf moves and I was doing these moves, and the director said, ‘What are you doing?’” Jackman recalled. “And I said, ‘Well, I was just thinking wolves are always looking like this because they’re actually smelling, they’ve got their nose to the ground. That’s why they’re looking like this all the time.’ And he goes, ‘What do you mean a wolf?’ And I said, ‘Well, you know, Wolverine — I’m part wolf so…’ and he goes, ‘No, you’re a wolverine.’”
It all worked out in the end: Jackman earned raves as the brooding aggro Logan, a part he loves so much he’s bringing him back from the dead. But perhaps the most important part was that he learned about an animal he’d never heard of before. Animals rule.
It says a lot about the current Republican party — and just how painfully desperate Kevin McCarthy was to be named Speaker of the House of Representatives — that one of the new congress’ very first acts was to essentially give a middle finger to the Ethics Committee. And pathological fabulist George Santos, for one, couldn’t be happier.
While it took House Republicans several days, 15 rounds of voting, and one near-brawl to actually name a leader, they didn’t waste any time in essentially disabling the Office of Congressional Ethics. As Insider reports, one of the group’s first acts on Monday was to enact a new set of guiding rules for members of the House that will make it much more difficult for the Ethics committee to actually investigate a congressperson for suspected wrongdoing. Which seems like a terrible idea to pretty much anyone who is not a corrupt congressperson. And explains why New York congressman Santos, who has reportedly lied about everything — from his school to his jobs to his religion to his MOTHER DYING ON 9/11 — is all for the new ruling.
“I think it’s fantastic,” the controversial congressman told Insider of the new rules, which just passed with a vote of 220 to 213. Though he was just sworn into congress a few days ago, Santos is already the subject of at least two Office of Congressional Ethics complaints related to financial matters. He’s also the subject of multiple investigations due to the many lies he told in order to secure his congressional seat.
While Santos didn’t want to talk about any of the accusations against him, he disagreed with the idea that handcuffing the Ethics committee would be a good thing for him and other shifty types. “I think it just gives them more power,” he bizarrely said of the changes, then mentioned that he is very much for term limits.
Ultimately, Santos thinks the changes are “a good thing for transparency. It’s a good thing for Americans. Renewal.” Whatever that means.
It’s been a week since the GOP took control over the House. They won’t exactly be very powerful; they won by a slim margin, which means the legislation they wish to pass requires some Democratic support, which means said legislation can’t be too loony. But there’s nothing stopping them from almost getting into physical altercations, or from making bizarro rants on the taxpayers’ dime, which is exactly what one freshman Republican did.
Meet Ryan Zinke. You might know him. He was once one of the quieter members of the Trump administration. As secretary of the interior, his big controversies involved using charter jets for personal reasons and spending way too much money on doors. No big whoop. Zinke was recently sworn in as a Montana representative, but on Tuesday he made himself known by taking to the House floor and ranting about how the “deep state” was after an obvious foe: cowboys.
Zinke: Despite the deep state’s attempts to repeatedly stop me I stand before you as a duly elected member of the congress and tell you that a deep state exists… They want to wipe out the American cowboy pic.twitter.com/BrOiIltbMp
He started by painting himself as a target of shadowy minions. “Despite the Deep State’s attempts to repeatedly stop me, I stand before you as a duly elected member of the United States Congress and tell you that a Deep State exists and it is perhaps the strongest covert weapon the left has against the American people,” Zinke told his colleagues. He then went even more conspiratorial.
“There is no doubt the federal government Deep State coordinates with liberal activists and uses politicians and willing media to carry their water,” Zinke said. “The Deep State runs secret messaging campaigns with one goal in mind: To increase its power, to censor and persuade the American people.”
But the alleged deep state — a favorite boogeyman of the Trump-era far right — weren’t only trying to stop him. “Dark money groups funded by liberal billionaires and foreign investors funnel money to shell organizations and repeatedly attempt to destroy the American West,” Zinke charged. “In many cases, they want to wipe out the American cowboy completely, remove public access to our lands and turn Montana into a national park.”
Sounds like someone’s been watching too much Yellowstone. And with that, following an entire week in which House Republicans struggled to elect a Speaker, it’s clear the next two years are gonna be bananas.
I have been working to better myself physically and mentally since grade school, collecting certifications and accreditations as a form of higher learning. Like many who have become students of wellness, the only thing I know for certain is that there is always more to learn. I have also discovered along the way that it can be incredibly effective to travel somewhere new when I want to kick off a new habit, take a course, or learn a new skill.
There is no question that at home we have our habits, good or bad. They can be hard to break while you are stuck in the loop.
The new year is a great time to break out of those bad habits and add a few new positive ones. It’s also a great time to look for new places in this great country to explore. Below, we’ve compiled a list of Uproxx-approved hotels, resorts, and centers, that will help you find your way to wellness.
Crestone Mountain Zen Center is located on the western slope of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in southern Colorado. Nestled against rugged 14,000-foot peaks and surrounded by 240 acres piñon pine and juniper forest, the beauty and seclusion of our Center is a unique environment for contemplation and inquiry. Crestone Mountain Zen Center offers residential monastic Zen practice and meditation under the guidance of Head Teacher, Zentatsu Baker Roshi, Dharma Heir of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi. Zen practitioners are welcome to join the daily schedule or apply for a variety of Zen programs.
This center has everything someone looking for quiet (both inner and outer) needs to achieve a more silent state. The accommodations range from a stay in their calming guest house or having your own cabin. The meals are vegetarian and clean, which will give you healthy energy for a clear mind. Spending time with your own thoughts doesn’t mean you have to stay in one room the whole time either. There are plenty of great activities like hikes, hot springs, and sand dunes.
Getting away can mean a lot of different things to different people. For some, it may mean seclusion, while others might want connection outside of their usual routine. That is why Honor’s Haven makes a great choice for a great number of travelers. Their mission is to be a place for an authentic human connection and integrative personal development, where people can improve themselves and better appreciate others.
Their accommodations are perfect for solo travelers, couples, or families. There are workshops all day, as well as hikes, meditations, yoga, qigong, tennis, and much more. They also have a fully-outfitted fitness facility, in case your escape includes getting a workout in. Being in the beautiful Catskills means there is plenty of nature around, meaning that if you want your own space you can find it.
For people wanting to go on a wellness journey but finding the options overwhelming, it can be comforting to have a helping hand at the beginning. CIVANA’s guest experience guides are offered to connect with guests before their arrival to guide them through the many wellness choices available.
Whatever that desire ends up being, their world-renowned guides and healers should be able to help. The location is also stunning, nestled in more than 20 acres of succulent-studded Sonoran Desert. Given the setting, there are plenty of outdoor experiences and adventures to be had, as well as a world-class spa.

On top of that it is located in the trendiest neighborhood in Manhattan, with a pool-side lounge that has every bit of New York cool you want and great sunset views. The perfect to wrap up the day with a well-deserved bite or cocktail, before doing it all over again.
This resort is the ultimate base camp for adventure, set amongst the red rock cliffs and canyons of southern Utah. Set in the midst of Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks, with Snow Canyon State Park just down the road, just calling out for independent exploration. There is top-notch rock climbing in the area, for those who want to go with a group or without. Starting a love for hiking, if you don’t already have one, is an accessible way to maintain your health.
The vistas around the area are stunning from sunrise to sunset, and of course late into the night when a blanket of stars will illuminate the dark sky. The resort is also a beautiful place to come back to, with 55 acres of vibrantly-colored earth amongst the mountains. There you can recover from your day on the mountain with their nature-inspired treatments like a red mountain revitalizer or a soothing agave ritual.
A PLACE TO FIND YOUR BODY — Treebones Resort (Big Sur, California)
WHY IT’S GREAT FOR A FRESH START:
Yoga has been shown to benefit the mental state as well as a great way to improve your physicality. Big Sur is a beautiful place to go no matter what the reason, and it’s an incredible area to wake up. For someone curious about trying yoga, Treebones Resort is an off-grid glamping experience that kicks off every day with breakfast and an instructor-led yoga class either in their panoramic outdoor platform or a fireside studio.
This is a perfect place to go for someone curious about trying yoga more, without the pressure of a three or five-day yoga retreat, which can cost thousands. The accommodations are simple but charming, including yurts, tents, and even a “human nest’ built beautifully from sticks and wood. Outside of the daily yoga, there are plenty of other activities to fill up the day from hiking to kayaking in the Morro Bay National Estuary.
Located amongst the mountains, in the mystic juniper forests of Central Oregon, Juniper Preserve is a perfect place to bathe in nature and breath fresh air. The health and wellness offerings are plentiful, with classes held throughout the day. The biggest draw for me was the breathwork and sound healing experiences, surrounded by pristine nature. The landscape is more than Instagram-worthy, though you should try to keep your phone off as much as possible.
The cuisine on site is farm-to-table, with plenty of nutritious offerings to help you power through the day. The accommodations are all you could ask for, simple but modern, with warm decor and great views. Some rooms have fireplaces, the perfect place to remember the lessons of the day and prepare for the next day of growth.
These days finding quiet, true quiet, can be incredibly difficult. Between the constant buzz of technology, direct or indirect, and the social construct in which we live now, noise is constant. That is compounded by the inner voices that we have about work or life, which can make it virtually impossible to process everything that is going on. Or even pay attention to the things that really matter. Studies show that spending significant time in silence can help our concentration and focus.
That is why going on a silent retreat can be an incredible way to reestablish your relationship with your inner voice and get comfortable in your own mind. This is like a detox for the brain, but not of toxins or chemicals, for the pollution of noise. Here at the center, you won’t just practice silence, but also breath work that has been scientifically shown to reduce stress.
