Quavo Grieves Takeoff In His Powerful, Vulnerable New Song ‘Without You’

The tragic death of Takeoff in November of last year shook the hip-hop world. Many rappers shared tributes to the late Migos member on social media, including Offset, Cardi B, Metro Boomin, and many more. Some even released songs in his honor, like Gucci Mane with “Letter To Takeoff.”

Quavo, who was not only his fellow Migos member but his uncle, started his written tribute to Takeoff with, “It’s so hard to tell you Ima miss you because you always with me and we did everything together.” Posted in November, the whole message was emotional, raw and powerful.

Late Wednesday night, January 4, Quavo shared a song for Takeoff called “Without You.” It’s immediately vulnerable: “Tears rolling down my eyes / Can’t tell you how many times I cried / Days ain’t the same without you,” he sings. The track serves as a space for Quavo to grieve; he recollects old memories with Takeoff against a melancholy beat. There’s hope as well, as he sings, “See you in heaven.”

Quavo was attending a private event with Takeoff when he was fatally shot outside 810 Billiards & Bowling in Houston on November 1. Houston Police arrested his suspected killer, Patrick Xavier Clark, one month later. Clark is being held on bond, though he has made repeated attempts to reduce his bond.

Takeoff’s funeral felt more like a celebration of life, taking place at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena and featuring performances from Justin Bieber, Chloe Bailey, Yolanda Adams, and Byron Cage. Drake, Cardi B, Gucci Mane, City Girls, YG, Russell Simmons, and Lil Yachty were also in attendance.

Sean Hannity And Lauren Boebert Got Into A Knock-Down Drag Out Fight Over Kevin McCarthy, And People Are Here For It

The Republican Party kicked off the new year the only way they know how: by sowing chaos. This time, however, it’s largely self-contained. A small but pivotal cadre of MAGA lawmakers who won’t let former Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy get promoted. It’s taken two days and six separate votes and they still can’t elect a new Speaker of the House. And if Lauren Boebert’s fight with Sean Hannity on Wednesday night is any indication, this is far from over.

Boebert is among the 20 House Republicans adamantly against McCarthy getting the gig, despite two years of him appeasing the MAGA extremist wing of his party. She’s not budging for anybody — not for her former bestie Marjorie Taylor Greene, not even for Donald Trump himself, who’s begged her to flip-flop. When she appeared on Hannity on the second day of the House mess, it didn’t take long for the tussle to begin.

“Let me turn the tables, congresswoman,” Hannity charged. “Kevin McCarthy has 202–3 votes. Your side has 20. So, if I’m gonna use your words, and your methodology, and your math, isn’t it time for you to pack it in and your side to pack it in considering he has over 200 and you have 20?”

At first Boebert tried to mollify him, saying, “Sean, I understand the frustration, I promise you.” But the two quickly started talking over each other. As she claimed there were plenty of McCarthy voters who secretly sided with her faction and are “waiting for Kevin to cave,” Hannity told her he was “frustrated by you not answering a direct question.” As she kept barreling over his points, he let out a testy “Can I finish?”

Soon they were debating over cold hard numbers:

HANNITY: He has 203. Your side has 20. Why is it time for him to withdraw and not you when he has so many more votes?

BOEBERT: Well, Sean, he needs 218 and he does not have 218.

HANNITY: Neither do you!

Eventually he asked if her side would relent if they couldn’t find an alternate candidate who can get at least 30 votes. She replied, “I will not withdraw.”

“With all due respect,” Hannity told her, “If you only have 30, to be clear, you will not withdraw, but you’re telling Kevin McCarthy and the 203 people that support him to withdraw because they don’t have 218. That’s what you’re saying?”

“Look, it’s obvious by tonight’s motion to adjourn that Kevin McCarthy and his supporters have voter fatigue,” Boebert replied. “And I’m here for it.”

“I asked you a simple question, congresswoman,” Hannity said. “I feel I’m getting an answer from a liberal.”

Boebert responded, “I’m not going to support Kevin McCarthy, Sean.”

Republicans are known to tussle with Democrats, so seeing two intransigent squabblers from the same party get into it was really something else. And people (read: non-Republicans) were here for it.

As Ken Watanabe says in the 2014 Godzilla: Let them fight.

Cardi B Defends Her Outrage Over The Price Of Lettuce Against People Claiming She’s Too Rich To Care

Cardi B has earned her wealth, and she doesn’t intend on recklessly spending just because she can. Apparently, some people find pleasure in criticizing Cardi for her finances — from the $1 million she pocketed for a 35-minute Art Baset set to her (falsely) reported $40 million net worth. This week, Cardi chimed in on the soaring grocery prices across the US.

“Naaaaaa grocery shopping prices are ridiculous right now,” Cardi tweeted yesterday, January 3. “You might as well eat outside !!” She added in a separate tweet, “B*tch why lettuce cost 6 dollars where I live at?”

Some tweeters didn’t understand why someone as successful as Cardi would care about $6 lettuce, and Cardi had an answer for them tonight, January 4:

“Let me tell you somethin’: When I be complaining about food prices, and y’all motherf*ckers be like, ‘Ain’t you rich? Why you complaining about this?’, that just goes to show me, when you become successful, when you have money, you gonna go broke soon because y’all not budgeting,” Cardi said in a video she deemed a “PSA.”

She continued, “I get a summary of the money that’s being spent in my home every week. So, when I’m starting to see that groceries is, like, tripling up, it’s like, ay, yo, what the f*ck is going on? I wanna see for myself what the f*ck sh*t is being spent on, and when I go to the f*cking supermarket — I went to the supermarket — I’m seeing that everything tripled up. That lettuce was, like, $2 a couple of months ago, and now, it’s like f*cking $7. Of course, I’ma say something! The f*ck! ‘Cause if I think that sh*t is crazy, I can only imagine what middle-class people or people in the hood is motherf*cking thinking. So, yes, I’m going to say something. The f*ck! And I have a big platform, so I do want anybody that’s responsible [for] these f*cking prices to put that sh*t the f*ck down.”

Stars, they’re just like us.

When someone suggested that Cardi can’t single-handedly reverse inflation, she responded, “Not necessarily cause of me but if we bring enough awareness to inflation you never know.”

Who can be mad at her for trying?

Mercedes Moné’s Next Stop Is Reportedly Wrestling For AEW

Over the span of the last 24 hours, Mercedes Moné — formerly known as Sasha Banks — offered a series of ‘thank you’ notes to fans and former colleagues within WWE, debuted for NJPW, and the latest news is a report detailing her expected debut for AEW.

When AEW Dynamite takes place from The Forum next Wednesday, Moné is expected to be Saraya’s mystery partner against Britt Baker and Jaime Hayter. Baker stoked the flames of that possibility Wednesday night ahead, referencing her former nickname as Banks:

Moné became a free agent when the calendar turned to 2023, after reportedly attempting to negotiate money in the range of what Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch make. WWE allegedly balked at that price, per the Wrestling Observer, setting up Tuesday night’s events and Moné’s slew of “thank you” notes to the like of WWE, William Regal, Triple H, the WWE Universe, Vince McMahon, and a special one to Sasha Banks.

She then showed up at NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 17, extending a hand for Kairi before pulling her in and dropping the IWGP Women’s Champion. Moné then grabbed the mic and introduced herself before challenging Kairi to a title match on February 18 at Battle of the Valley in San Jose.

Moné last appeared in WWE in May 2022, walking out on the company with her then-partner Naomi. While Moné is off enjoying a fresh start elsewhere, Naomi is reportedly “almost certainly be returning to WWE” herself, according to the Wrestling Observer.

New And Exciting Barrel Proof Rye Whiskeys, Blind Tasted And Ranked

Let’s start off 2023 by going hard in the paint with the whiskey tastings. Today, I’m lining up some of the best cask strength rye whiskeys — or “barrel strength” depending on the label’s wording — to see how well they stand up to each other … and how much burn there really is in these ABV bombs. This is a blind tasting about big flavors, big ideas, and big proofs in the rye whiskey sphere.

For the lineup today, I’ve included the following bottles:

  • Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye Whiskey BTAC 2022
  • Redwood Empire Emerald Giant Rye Whiskey Cask Strength
  • Michter’s Limited Release US*1 Barrel Strength Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey
  • Rare Character Presents Single Barrel Series Straight Kentucky Rye Whiskey Cask Strength
  • Uncle Nearest Rye Single Barrel Whiskey, Barrel no. 1
  • Stellum Rye The Lone Cypress
  • Blackwood Toasted Rye Whiskey Batch #1 Barrel Strength
  • Starlight Distillery Single Barrel Huber’s Cigar Batch Rye Whiskey Finished in Amburana Barrels

While I’ve been focusing on “new” releases a lot over the last months, this is about a side-by-side rye whiskey style comparison. Cask strength whiskey is meant to show off the beauty of the spirit’s aging in the barrel. There’s no hiding behind proofing here. This is about a distiller and/or blender finding the barrels that hit perfect marks as-is that then become a fantastic batched or single-barrel rye whiskey without any water added to hit those high flavor marks.

In short, this is the good stuff on its own.

When it comes to the ranking, I’m going on taste alone. That said, part of the tasting experience with cask strength expressions is how much the ABVs blow out the flavor profile on the nose and palate. So, the overall warmth will 100% come into play when tasting these rye whiskeys, especially how that warmth is balanced out with the overall profile.

Okay, let’s dive in and rate some stellar rye whiskeys to open 2023 on a high note.

Part 1: The Tasting

Cask Strength Rye Whiskey Blind
Zach Johnston

Taste 1

Cask Strength Rye Whiskey Blind
Zach Johnston

Tasting Notes:

Nose: This is tannic from the jump with a nutty sense of an old almond cookie next to buttery biscuits with marmalade and a trio of old saddle leather, star anise, and lemon meringue pie with a flutter of dried flowers in the background.

Palate: The palate lights on fire with high ABVS. Then, those florals pop on the palate as candied orange and spiced holiday cake lead to a dark chocolate brownie, some burnt orange, and sweet cinnamon with a peanut brittle sweetness.

Finish: The end is piney and full of dried roses, orange rinds, and incense.

Initial Thoughts:

This has a nice, almost classic nose that feels old and tannic with a clear sense of dry old potpourri pots lurking throughout the whole profile. This isn’t my jam — thanks to that floral side — but it’s really well constructed.

Taste 2

Cask Strength Rye Whiskey Blind
Zach Johnston

Tasting Notes:

Nose: This opens with a soft leatheriness that’s embued with dry chamomile tea, burnt orange, dark cherry bark, and old cinnamon sticks that spent too much time in mulled wine with a hint of sour cherry and tart apple.

Palate: The palate amps up the tea leaf vibe with lush Earl Grey next to dark chocolate-covered espresso beans flaked with salt and maybe some dried nasturtiums that build out the spices toward a spiced winter cake.

Finish: Those baked winter spices lead back to a soft creamy espresso dusted with nutmeg and dark chocolate powder and layered into a spiced tobacco leaf rolled with cedar bark on the end.

Initial Thoughts:

There’s a nice complexity that speaks to a high-quality spirit in the glass. This was very B+ but didn’t wow.

Taste 3

Cask Strength Rye Whiskey Blind
Zach Johnston

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Dark cherry and butterscotch candies pop on the nose next to sour red wine mixed with mulled wine spices — lots of cinnamon, clove, and star anise — next to tart apple skins, apple bark, and a hint of singed marshmallow between lightly burnt Graham Crackers.

Palate: The palate leans into spices in a subtle way with a nutmeg/eggnog vibe next to rich vanilla ice cream and smoked cherries with a minor note of fresh pipe tobacco and singed cedar bark.

Finish: The end adds some dried red chili and sharp cinnamon to the tobacco with a pinch of freshly cracked black pepper and a supple sense of a fresh fruit bowl with a lot of red berries.

Initial Thoughts:

Okay, this is really good. It feels fashioned from great whiskey. There’s just something “more” here.

Taste 4

Cask Strength Rye Whiskey Blind
Zach Johnston

Tasting Notes:

Nose: The nose opens with a classic sense of winter spices — cinnamon barks, whole cloves, freshly ground nutmeg, star anise — next to creamy nog spiked with vanilla and salted toffee with an all-around leatheriness that’s countered by red pepper sharpness.

Palate: The red pepper sharpness gets woody on the palate with a balance of creamy and soft sweet notes tied to vanilla, stewed pear, and prunes countered by woody winter spices soaked in apple cider and baked into mince pies.

Finish: The woodiness of the spices kicks up near the end with a rich and chewy tobacco finish that’s layered with stewed pear, old cherry bark, and wild smudging sage.

Initial Thoughts:

Funky and fresh next to classic and vivid. This is another whiskey that’s just on another level.

Taste 5

Cask Strength Rye Whiskey Blind
Zach Johnston

Tasting Notes:

Nose: This is a butterscotch bomb in the nose — that tells me it’s likely Canadian or at least 100% rye. There is a sense of dry grains, sweetgrass, and wild smudging sage that rounds the nose’s path toward orchard fruits and old honey pots.

Palate: That dry grassy and graininess drive the palate toward a rich butterscotch and warming ABV heat that’s part sharp cinnamon spice and part alcohol.

Finish: That spicy warmth dominates the finish for a while and then fades toward apple and cherry bark with a hint of pear/apple cider cut with clove and cinnamon next to a final rush of sage and sweetgrass tied to light apricot tobacco.

Initial Thoughts:

This ends really strong but it’s a trek to get there. This is also such a massive outlier to the rest of the whiskeys so far that it’s hard to slot it into a spot.

Taste 6

Cask Strength Rye Whiskey Blind
Zach Johnston

Tasting Notes:

Nose: There’s a light pine resin vibe on the nose with a bushel of dried savory green herbs — think sage, thyme, rosemary, tarragon — next to old leather and dried sour cherries tossed in kosher salt.

Palate: The palate has a note of that pine with a soft orange rind next to a spiced winter cake with dried fruit, walnuts, and wintry spices.

Finish: The end is slightly warm thanks to high ABVs with a sense of those salted cherries and pine resin leading to a dry finish.

Initial Thoughts:

This is a pretty classic overall rye with plenty of fruit and savory greenness. It ends a little soft on the palate and ultimately doesn’t have quite the same depth as others on the list today … so far anyway.

Taste 7

Cask Strength Rye Whiskey Blind
Zach Johnston

Tasting Notes:

Nose: The nose is a straight-up classic with a sense of cherry and cinnamon tied to fresh and chewy tobacco with a sense of old cedar bark braided with dry sweetgrass and smudging sage with a light sense of pear candy and cream soda.

Palate: The taste leans into spiced cherry tobacco and stewed pear with a hint of marmalade and peach cobbler next to a hint of black-tea-soaked dates, salted whiskey-laced toffee, and clotted cream before a red chili pepper spiciness kicks in with a sense of cinnamon and cherry bark.

Finish: The woodies of the orchard fruit and spice drive the warm finish — but never hot — toward a luxurious and creamy end full of sharp yet sweet tobacco, a whisper of dank resin, and echoes of old fruit orchards.

Initial Thoughts:

This smells like an award-winning whiskey from the jump. The taste only confirms that. This is really f*cking good whiskey.

Taste 8

Cask Strength Rye Whiskey Blind
Zach Johnston

Tasting Notes:

Nose: There’s a clear nuttiness on the nose that mixes Brazil nuts with creamy almond and pecan waffles next to soft leather and a mild sense of white pepper and chili powder.

Palate: The palate has a creaminess that’s kind of like mochi or chai mocha latte with a tobacco spiciness, cedar bark, and more of that creamy nuttiness with a hint of pear and maybe some more white pepper.

Finish: The end leans into the white pepper and mochi with a rush of apple cider and clove tobacco packed into a cedar box with a hint of resin and macadamia nut dipped in dark chocolate sauce.

Initial Thoughts:

This was another outlier for sure but this made a lot more sense. Moreover, the ABVs were almost non-existent, making for a ridiculously smooth-tasting experience. But was it… too smooth?

Part 2: The Ranking

Cask Strength Rye Whiskey Blind
Zach Johnston

8. Uncle Nearest Rye Single Barrel Whiskey, Barrel No. 1 — Taste 5

Uncle Nearest Single Barrel Rye
Uncle Nearest

ABV: 60.5%

Average Price: $89

The Whiskey:

This brand-new whiskey from Tennessee’s Uncle Nearest — it dropped on December 15th, 2022 — is made from Canadian rye. The 100% rye whiskey is aged in New York for four years before it’s finished in British Columbia for a spell. Finally, the barrels were shipped to Tennessee and bottled 100% as-is, one at a time.

Bottom Line:

This needs to be tasted again with other Canadian ryes. That said, this was a butterscotch bomb that was just not my jam. I need to try it again, but I’m honestly a little disappointed by it right now.

7. Stellum Rye The Lone Cypress — Taste 6

Stellum Lone Cypress
Barrell Craft Spirits

ABV: 57.67%

Average Price: $99

The Whiskey:

Named for one of the world’s most famous trees, this whiskey is all about finding the funky forest in the flavor profile of a brand-new rye whiskey. The blend was created by the awesome team at Barrell Craft Spirits to accentuate woodier notes before it was bottled at cask strength.

Bottom Line:

This started strong but finished weak. It was well-built throughout but didn’t wow like the other whiskeys on this list. I’d probably take that strong body and build a great cocktail/finish from that base.

6. Redwood Empire Emerald Giant Rye Whiskey Cask Strength — Taste 2

Redwood Empire Cask Strength
Redwood Empire

ABV: 58.2%

Average Price: $70

The Whiskey:

This brand-new whiskey from cult-favorite Redwood Empire out in Sonoma, California, takes their tried and true method of blending California, Indiana, and Kentucky whiskeys to the next level. The blend ended up being a lightly wheated rye with a mash bill of 94% rye, 5% malted barley, and a mere 1% wheat. The barrels were all a minimum of four years old (with some reaching past six years) when batched and bottled as-is.

Bottom Line:

This hit nicely but a bit like a mid-range pour. It was perfectly fine and delivered a rye whiskey vibe but didn’t blow me away. Again, I’d likely use this for strong cocktails or on-the-rocks pours and be perfectly happy about it.

5. Starlight Distillery Single Barrel Huber’s Cigar Batch Rye Whiskey Finished in Amburana Barrels — Taste 8

Starlight Cigar Blend Rye
Louisville Bourbon Buzz/Tyler Zoller

ABV: 56.9%

Average Price: $79

The Whiskey:

This rye from craft distiller Starlight Distillery — part of the Huber Farm and Winery in Southern Indiana — is all about that finish. The four and five-year-old rye whiskey is re-loaded into Brazilian Amburana barrels and left to rest until just right. Finally, the best barrels are batched and then bottled completely as-is.

Bottom Line:

This was unique and tasty. The finish really stood out and worked with the rye whiskey below it. That said, this only gets dinged in that you didn’t feel the barrel cask strength at all. And if you’re reaching for a cask-strength whiskey, you at least want to know there’s a little something more there, right?

Still, this was tasty AF.

4. Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye Whiskey BTAC 2022 — Taste 1

Thomas H. Handy Rye 2022
Sazerac Company

ABV: 65.45%

Average Price: $1,499

The Whiskey:

This year’s Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye was distilled back in the spring of 2016 with a mix of Minnesota rye, Kentucky corn, and North Dakota malted barley with some of the iconic Kentucky limestone water. The hot juice went into new white oak from Independent Stave from Missouri with a #4 char level (55 seconds). Those barrels were racked in warehouses I, L, and M on floors 2, 4, 5, and 6. After six years and four months, 31% of the whiskey was lost to the angel’s share before these barrels were batched and bottled as-is.

Bottom Line:

I’m all over the place on this whiskey. Sometimes that floral potpourri note is so overwhelming that I can’t stand it. Sometimes, it’s layered well enough that I can get behind it. Today, I leaned more toward the latter. This is a really good whiskey that’s very mood dependent. If I am in the mood, then this over a rock or two is about as good as it gets if you’re looking for a floral, green, and funky rye with a nice kick to it.

3. Rare Character Presents Single Barrel Series Straight Kentucky Rye Whiskey Cask Strength — Taste 4

Rare Character Single Barrel Rye
Rare Character

ABV: 60.94%

Average Price: $79

The Whiskey:

This rare whiskey from Rare Character’s team is a Kentucky rye made from 95% rye and 5% malted barely. The hot juice went into the barrel back in May of 2016. In October of 2022, the Rare Character crew bottled this one barrel of great whiskey completely as-is.

Bottom Line:

Okay, this is where the “wow” factor really kicks in. This whiskey is so funky and vivid. It’s just a freaking masterpiece barrel that I truly want more of in my life, especially when you start adding a little water it really starts to bloom in the glass.

2. Michter’s Limited Release US*1 Barrel Strength Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey — Taste 3

Michters Distillery

ABV: 54.6%

Average Price: $199

The Whiskey:

This rare Michter’s expression is pulled from single barrels that were just too good to batch or cut. Once the barrels hit the exact right flavor profile, each one is filtered with Michter’s bespoke system and then bottled as-is at the strength it came out of the barrel.

Bottom Line:

As I said above, there’s just “more” here. This is deeper, more interesting, more flavor, and more fun. The heat from the ABVs accent the flavor profile, they don’t overwhelm it for a moment. It’s a balance that is hard to achieve but takes this to the next level.

1. Blackwood Toasted Rye Whiskey Batch #1 Barrel Strength — Taste 7

Blackwood Rye
Blackwood

ABV: 58.2%

Average Price: $150

The Whiskey:

This rye is sourced from expertly picked barrels for a very small batch offering. The mash is a classic 95/5 rye/malted barley bill. The barrels are close to seven years old before a handful come together to create this barrel-strength bottling of only 620 bottles.

Bottom Line:

I’d be shocked if this didn’t win some huge awards in 2023. It’s a perfect whiskey, rye or not. It’s a short run, so you need to move fast to get some.

Part 3: Final Thoughts

Cask Strength Rye Whiskey Blind
Zach Johnston

There’s a certain panache that some whiskey builds have that others just don’t. That became very clear on this list. The top four or so whiskeys just felt like they were on a different footing that the rest. You could feel the years, maybe decades, of personal expertise behind the whiskey in those pours. There was just more there in every way.

Pontificating aside, these were all really tasty — yes, even the bottom three or four pours. The bottom half is perfectly suitable for beginners, passive whiskey fans, cocktail mixers, or just everyday table pours. The top half of this list is where you go when you take your palate to the next level and/or really impress your whiskey crew. They’re the bottles that’ll wow.

And all of that said, that Blackwood Toasted Rye is already in the running for best rye of 2023. It’s only three days into the year but it’s that good.

Ja Morant Burned 31 Seconds By Just Standing Over The Ball Because No Hornets Defended Him

Point guards have long had the ball rolled to them in late game situations trying not to start the clock until the last possible moment to save as much time as possible, but in recent years it has become far more popular to do so in the middle of action to burn clock while the shot clock remains at :24.

Ja Morant does it as much as anyone, and on Wednesday he took it to a new level in the midst of a Grizzlies blowout of the Hornets in Charlotte. After a LaMelo Ball three made it a 96-67 Memphis lead in the third quarter, Morant had Jon Konchar drop the ball at his feet on the inbound and simply stood there over it as the clock ticked and ticked and ticked with no one from the Hornets coming to defend him. Eventually Terry Rozier would come force him to pick up the ball but not before 31 seconds worked off the clock from the time Ball’s three went through the rim.

In this game, it was more a merciful move than anything, as it got both teams a half minute closer to the final buzzer with the game already decided in the third. That said, it’s an incredibly funny visual of Ja standing by himself over the ball waiting to see how long he could get away with it, while the Charlotte crowd got increasingly mad at him for it.

Things Got A Little Saucy In An Interview With Colin Farrell And Emma Thompson (That Was Mostly About Loneliness)

Colin Farrell had a great 2022, and rightly so. He deserves every accolade he gets for The Banshees of Inisherin (and any he gets for The Batman, After Yang, and Thirteen Lives as well). Emma Thompson ain’t doing too shabby either. She scored raves last year for Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, as a lonely woman who gets to enjoy the company of a young sex worker. The two happened to share the screen — albeit not in the same scenes, alas — in 2013’s Saving Mr. Banks, about the making of the film Mary Poppins. But in a new chat, it’s clear they have a rapport — so much so that things got a little risqué.

In a new dual interview with Vanity Fair, the two delved into the similarities between their two characters, both people dealing with loneliness. It gets pretty heavy (in a lovely way). But the pair knew to temper the heaviosity with some jokes, even some sauciness. After Farrell talks about how lockdown “imposed an aloneness on people who had never experienced aloneness before,” Thompson suddenly and dramatically shifts gears:

Thompson: Are you having good sex at the moment, Col?

Farrell: What, love?

Thompson: I said, are you having good sex at the moment?

Farrell: Oh, God. That’s a different Zoom, darling. Email me.

It wasn’t the first time they turned the heat up during their chat. When asked about the first time they met each other, Thompson remembered it fondly.

Thompson: I think there were two things before we started shooting. You and I had a dinner together, just the two of us, in a little restaurant and I remember you were looking very-

Farrell: Scruffy?

Thompson: Sexy. You had your shirt undone. I think you had one button undone that was, I felt, going a little far.

At another point, Farrell simply got amusingly frank about his youthful drug period. Thompson mentions first seeing him in Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report but can’t remember the name, referring to it as “Scott Frank’s thriller.” (The Queen’s Gambit auteur co-wrote the screenplay.) But when Thompson asked what it was called, he drew a blank:

Farrell: F*ck. I should know that, shouldn’t I?

Thompson: Jesus, you were in the f*cking thing!

Farrell: I blame drugs!

It’s a lovely chat, in which the two ruminate on loneliness and insignificance. “We’re just here for a bit, then we die and we’re gone,” Thompson muses at one point, after she talks about how “unbearable” it was watching Farrell’s sweet nincompoop character in Inisherin systematically stripped of his blissfully stupid happiness.

You can read the full dual interview over at Vanity Fair.

White Reaper Shred On Guitars While Playing Chess In The New ‘Pink Slip’ Video

White Reaper’s Asking For A Ride is approaching rapidly, with unrelenting momentum and increasing anticipation. The singles “Pages” and “Fog Machine” captured the powerful, invigorating energy they’re known for, and now their newest single, “Pink Slip,” does the same.

“Pink Slip” is driven by infectious, heavy riffs and a catchy melody, both reminiscent of early 2000s pop punk. In the music video, two band members hilariously battle each other in chess while shredding on their guitars.

In White Reaper’s interview with Uproxx last month, Tony Esposito discussed his confidence as a songwriter.

“I’m definitely confident as a singer, but I think lyrics are always tricky ’cause you worry about enunciation or that sort of thing, because for the longest time with our band specifically, they’re like, ‘I don’t know what he’s saying, but it sounds cool.’ I think the lyrics are always gonna be troublesome, because you’re always looking for something better,” he said. “And it was with ‘Fog Machine,’ the last line of the chorus is, ‘Left me hanging in the first place.’ We were banging our heads against the wall trying to find something better than that, ’cause like none of us absolutely loved it.”

Watch the video for “Pink Slip” above.

Prior to this “Is There Someone Else?” development, The Weeknd closed out last year by contributing “Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength)” to the Avatar: The Way Of Water soundtrack and subsequently making the shortlist for Best Original Song at the 2023 Oscars.

That momentum carried over into the beginning of this year, as The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” surpassed Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You” as the most-streamed song in Spotify history (3.332 billion).

The Weeknd has also drummed up anticipation for the 2023 leg of his After Hours Til Dawn Tour by posting a recap of his 2022 North American leg. “We’re just getting started…,” he tweeted on Tuesday, January 3.
