Jacque Vaughn Praised Nets Players Who Were ‘Prepared To Play’ After Ben Simmons Left Another Game With Knee Soreness

One night after coming up just short in a hard-fought game in Philadelphia, the Nets were back in Brooklyn to host the Detroit Pistons, losers of four straight, on Thursday night.

Brooklyn was once again without Kevin Durant as he recovers from an MCL sprain, but also didn’t have Seth Curry available due to right knee soreness and saw T.J. Warren and Ben Simmons each leave the game with knee issues of their own. Warren suffered a knee contusion, while Simmons left in the third with knee soreness, a distinction that head coach Jacque Vaughn made sure to be very clear about in his postgame press conference.

Vaughn was asked about this being a potential schedule loss on the second night of a back-to-back and pushed back very hard on that being anything he’d ever consider, noting that every team plays the same number of games and they all face back-to-backs during the season — while also saying in his day there were times he’d play four in five nights, something the league has gotten rid of. He was also asked specifically about Simmons, as this wasn’t the first back-to-back he left early due to soreness, and whether he can be relied on in the future to be on the court in back-to-backs. Vaughn’s answer was eyebrow raising to say the least.

“The goal is, in my eyes, for everyone to play every game, and to do what’s necessary to play every game,” Vaughn said. “There’s certain amount of minutes that each individual played in Philly, some played equally tonight, so the preparation that it takes going into that, you just have to give credit to the guys who were prepared to play, ready to play, did what was necessary to get their bodies ready to play.”

As a former player, Vaughn is keenly aware of the demands of the NBA schedule, but also doesn’t seem particularly sympathetic (or empathetic) to guys needing days off. This all comes at a time when the load management concept is getting questioned again, with another former player, Richard Jefferson, noting on Thursday how he finds a lot of it ridiculous considering more stars are sitting out more games despite vastly superior training staffs and treatment options available to them.

For the Nets, they had Kyrie Irving and Nic Claxton each log big minutes on the back-to-back — Irving with 76 minutes and Claxton with 71 in the two games — while Simmons played a combined 49. For Vaughn, it seems some frustration with a lack of availability, particularly when he was active and not on the pregame injury report, is starting to creep up with Simmons and this seemed like his effort at public motivation for Simmons and potentially others to be more committed to being mentally and physically ready each night.

How Simmons responds to this remains to be seen, as tough love has not always been a successful motivational tool with the former All-Star, but right now his production level and availability are both leaving something to be desired in Brooklyn as they try to navigate life without KD and Jacque Vaughn appears ready to take a more direct approach.

Maisie Peters Grapples With An Ex Wanting Another ‘Body Better’ On Her ‘Most Personal’ New Single

Maisie Peters is back with her first new song of 2023, “Body Better.” The emotional track finds Peters wondering whether she can measure up to an ex-partner’s ideals and societal beauty standards. Despite the powerful lyricism, it doesn’t drag the song down — as it maintains an upbeat pop instrumental and a super catchy chorus.

“Were you sorry like you weren’t at the time?” Peters questions. “Loving you was easy / That’s why it hurts now / The worst way to love somebody is to watch them love somebody else.”

It also serves as the lead single from her eventual sophomore album.

“’Body Better’ is one of the most honest songs I’ve ever released, and definitely the most personal,” she shared in a statement. “I wrote it after a breakup and it deals with the ugly things you think to yourself in the aftermath, when you’re painstakingly going through everything small thing you did and were and wondering what you could have changed. It’s a song about insecurity and vulnerability, about giving a lot of yourself away to someone who decides they don’t want it anymore, and knowing where to go from there.”

Next week, she’ll be joining Ed Sheeran on the road for his Mathematics tour across New Zealand, Australia, and North America. Peters will also play her own headlining tour in Europe.

Chlöe Opts To ‘Pray It Away’ In The First Piece From Her Upcoming Debut Album

Ahead of her upcoming solo debut album, In Pieces, Chlöe has shared its lead single, “Pray It Away.”

On the first piece of In Pieces, Chlöe recovers from a broken heart by getting in touch with her spirituality. Initially, she is angry and vengeful over a man who did her dirty. But instead of exacting revenge, she chooses to pray the hurt and the heartache away.

“God knows my heart, I’m wildin’, wildin’ / So close to doin’ somethin’ / Maybe I should go and take it to church / And wash it away,” she sings on the song’s chorus, noting that although she wants this man to hurt, she’s deciding, “I’ma just pray it away.”

In the song’s accompanying visual, directed by Madeline Kate Kann, Chlöe is seen dancing in a historic church in downtown Los Angeles, surrounded by dancers dressed in white.

While we don’t know much else about her upcoming album, Chlöe is promising a soul-baring, unfiltered project.

“I have been the rawest, the most vulnerable, and the most open I have been in my entire life with this album,” said Chlöe in a statement. “I used to believe the way I love so hard without question, was a curse. Only to find out, it’s been my greatest gift all along.”

You can check out the video for “Pray It Away” above.

In Pieces arrives this March via Parkwood and Columbia. You can pre-save it here.

More than seven thousand people shared their best ideas to stop mass shootings. Here are the best.

As of January 24, 2023, at least 69 people have been killed in 39 mass shootings across the United States . The deadliest shooting happened on January 21 in Monterey Park, California, when a 72-year-old man shot 20 people, killing 11. On January 23, a 66-year-old man killed 7 people and injured another in a shooting in Half Moon Bay, California.

It’s hard to see these stories in the news every few weeks—or days—and not get desensitized, especially when lawmakers have made it clear that they will not do anything substantive to curb the availability of assault weapons in the U.S.

After the assault weapons ban, which had been in effect for 10 years, lapsed in 2004, the number of mass shootings tripled.

To find a glimmer of hope in such a dire situation, Reddit user Themissrebecca103 asked the online forum, “What could be done to prevent mass shootings?” and received nearly 16,000 responses. Many of the solutions looked past the intractable gun debate to the root causes that drive people to act out violently.

mass shootings, mass shooting stats, mass shooting history

Here are seven of the most thought-provoking potential solutions to the mass shooting problem.

1. Change attitudes around guns.

“There’s no quick answer, in part because ‘mass shootings’ combine many different underlying issues.

If we are talking about high-profile mass shootings, our problem in the USA relates to several overlapping issues:

It is relatively easy to acquire firearms. The legal mechanisms to deny a high risk person firearms are very limited. Every country produces a small percentage of deeply problematic people; ours is unique in arming them.

American culture around firearms is deeply problematic. Other heavily armed wealthy nations, like the commonly compared Switzerland, make the use of firearms a responsibility of being a good citizen. American culture all too often celebrates firearms as an extra-legal tool for imposing your will.

The modern world is a lonely world. People spend much more time alone now. This gets far beyond the scope of this reply, but many of our traditional social organizations have failed to adapt to the modern world. Young people are increasingly left without a community or direction. This amplifies the above issues.

Combined, these speak to mass shootings as a consequence of low social cohesion on a legal, cultural, and institutional level. Addressing that is multi-generational work.” — CxEnsign

2. Take mental health seriously.

“Make therapy more easily accessible for people who are middle or lower class. And actually take mental health and bullying seriously, instead of falsely advocating for it and brushing it off when people need serious mental help.” — AshtheArtist

monterey park, mass shooting california, star ballroom dance

3. Do something about red flags.

“People need to have real honest conversations with their loved ones and friends when the red flags go flying. Many of these shootings are not random and the warning signs were present. Help that woman escape her abuser, tell your brother to grow the fuck up and stop being abusive, take your son’s firearms when you know they are an abusive alcoholic, etc… Most of these people don’t live in isolation and people turn a blind eye because they feel it’s not their problem or place to insert themselves. Be brave and speak up. It could save someone’s life.” — SometimesILieToo

4. Change the media.

Shut down the news stations and pundits which are drumming up mentally ill people into thinking they’re in a fight-for-your-life scenario which justifies mass murder to them?” — ConnieHormoneMonster

5. Foster the development of happy, healthy people.

“Usually in these mass acts of violence, there are signs that people see beforehand. Posts made online, behavior at work or school or at home, basically a known history of struggle. By the time the incidents occur, there’s always a person that knew them before, that saw it coming a mile away.

There aren’t really resources or protocols for people like this, and removing the weapons from their hands feels like a band aid solution to a much bigger problem.

Happy, healthy people don’t go on mass killing sprees, and our current environment isn’t exactly producing healthy, happy people. I mean, just look at how many of us are on prescription drugs because we can’t cope with the way society is set up. We’re on drugs for depression and anxiety and emotional regulation and hormonal regulation because everything is imbalanced. Almost all of us are poor, just a couple of missed paychecks away from being homeless. We’re constantly seeking mental stimulation because if we have to think beyond the surface for a minute we start falling apart. We’re battling malnutrition without even realizing it because most of us are battling obesity. In other countries the raw fruits and veggies taste better and are more filling, people will travel and lose weight despite eating many of the same kinds of foods, the only difference is the lack of chemicals and preservatives inside.

This society isn’t producing happy, healthy people. And some of us can cope with it better than others.

Here, there are three options. You can work 40+ hours a week from the ages of 18 to the day you die and barely make ends meet, you can try an alternative path and end up homeless or close to it, or you can basically win a lottery that either lets you comfortably work less than 40 hours a week, allows you to retire early, or lets you pursue a lucrative passion that doesn’t feel like work. Most of us choose the first option.

You can disarm them, but then you’ve still got creatives that will use their cars or craft an explosive.

Treatment is probably the second best option we have. Ideally, we would know someone that sets off alarm bells, and we could call a doctor for them. They’d spend a few months getting help, and come back better.

But that isn’t how it’s set up. There aren’t resources for this. You can’t force people to get therapy. You can’t just call the cops on people that haven’t committed a crime, because you think one day they might commit a crime.
And it sucks, because we all know the signs. Sometimes we try to call someone for help, and there just isn’t a department for that.

The best option would be to create a better environment for everyone, encourage community and friendships and strengthen the bond between people to promote love and harmony, fix the food situation, fix the income situation, promote better and more diverse ways of living. Because if you don’t feel depressed and angry and alone, you won’t be at risk of falling into the mindset of someone who does these sorts of things.

America’s gun violence is a symptom of a much larger problem, and the ones who want to fix that problem don’t have the means to do so. The ones who have the means to fix it either don’t know why it’s happening, or don’t care why it’s happening.

Until we stop offering bandaid solutions that would be ineffective or minimally effective, we will continue to see this kind of behavior.” — SourBlue1992

barack obama, sandy hook shooting, mass shooting

6. It starts at home.

“As a teacher, it starts with kids needing love and care at home, which leads to people having their basic Maslow needs met so they aren’t constantly struggling. And mental health needs to become a priority instead of something we mostly ignore in the US. Kids (and adults) seek power and a sense of control through a gun because it’s missing in the rest of their life.” — Amherst 2023

7. Stop turning shooters into celebrities in the media.

I’m British. I don’t know what’s best for Americans as well as they do. But here’s some thoughts:

I don’t think you can copy-paste UK policy to the US. it’s like changing someone’s intrinsic identity. Take Iran for example. One of the lowest alcohol mortality rates. Imagine an Iranian saying to a British person ‘why don’t you just ban alcohol! It causes so much death. We banned it and our rate of mortality due to alcohol is one of the lowest in the world.’

You’d say something like “why should I give up something I enjoy and is part of my culture because a few bad apples take it too far?”

From talking to them, Americans view guns the same way. ‘Why does someone else doing wrong with guns have any bearing on me who’s just using it for fun/protection?’

I’d say a mix is gun regulations and mental health support and not making martyrs of shooters has the best chance.” — allthetaimpdetime

People rally behind a 12-year-old actress who was ‘humiliated’ with a ‘Razzie’ nomination

Since the early 80s, the Golden Raspberry Awards, aka the “Razzies,” has offered a lighthearted alternative to the Oscars, which, though prestigious, can sometimes dip into the pretentious. During the parody ceremony, trophies are awarded to the year’s worst films and performances as a way to “own your bad,” so the motto goes.

However, this year people found the Razzies a little more than harmless fun when 12-year-old actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong was nominated for “Worst Actress” for her performance in the 2022 film “Firestarter.” She was 11 when the movie was filmed.

Sadly, this is not the first time a child has received a Razzie nom. Armstrong joins the ranks of Jake Lloyd, who played young Anakin Skywalker in “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,” as well as Macaulay Culkin, who was nominated three times.

Armstrong’s nomination resulted in a flood of comments from both industry professionals and fans who felt the action was cruel and wanted to show their support for the young actress.

“The Razzies have sunk to a new low by nominating an eleven-year-old girl — whose performance I actually dug,” tweeted filmmaker Joe Russo of the Russo Brothers. “If you’re gonna continue denigrating people’s hard work — which you shouldn’t — at least target adults.”

Julian Hilliard, a fellow child actor known for “The Haunting of Hill House,” added, “The razzies are already mean-spirited & classless, but to nominate a kid is just repulsive & wrong. Why put a kid at risk of increased bullying or worse? Be better.”

Due to the backlash, the Razzies eventually retracted Armstrong’s nomination and set a new age rule that no one under the age of 18 could receive a nomination moving forward.

In a statement, Razzie Award founder John Wilson wrote, “Sometimes, you do things without thinking, Then you are called out for it. Then you get it. It’s why the Razzies were created in the first place.”

He continued, “The recent valid criticism of the choice of 11-year-old Armstrong as a nominee for one of our awards brought our attention to how insensitive we’ve been in this instance. As a result, we have removed Armstrong’s name from the Final Ballot that our members will cast next month. We also believe a public apology is owed Ms. Armstrong, and wish to say we regret any hurt she experienced as a result of our choices.”

The statement concluded, “We all make mistakes, very much us included. Since our motto is ‘Own Your Bad,’ we realize that we ourselves must also live up to it.”

Only last year, the Razzies were again the subject of criticism after featuring a special “Worst Performance by Bruce Willis in a 2021 Movie” category. The joke was quickly rescinded after Willis’ aphasia diagnosis became public and his family announced that he would be stepping away from acting due to his neurological disorder.

While part of “owning your bad” is certainly acknowledging a mistake, another important step is taking action that prevents further harm from happening. Luckily it seems that the Razzies are at least attempting to deliver that with their latest rule adjustments.

A rescue dog was finally reunited with her puppies after she refused to leave the corner of a room

People surrender animals to Humane Societies for all kinds of reasons, but many do it because they don’t feel like they can properly care for their animals anymore. It could be that they have to move to a home that doesn’t allow pets or they lost a job, making caring for an animal difficult.

Two small dogs were surrendered to Marin Humane Society in Novato, California and the female had recently given birth to puppies. It’s not clear if the previous owners felt like they couldn’t care for both the older dogs and the puppies so they just kept the puppies, or if something else prompted the drop-off.

Either way, this mama dog was in distress after being left at the shelter without her babies. She refused to leave the corner of the large kennel and just looked so sad. The employees felt for the sweet mama dog and decided to do some detective work to see if they could figure out where the puppies were located.

After some careful sleuthing, Marin Humane Society workers located the puppies and convinced the owner to surrender them. According to the animal shelter’s YouTube caption, the puppies were not yet old enough to be separated from their mother and were not in a safe situation. There are no details about the condition of the home or reasons the dogs were surrendered in the first place, but boy are those chubby little babies cute.

With mama still hiding in her corner, one of the shelter employees started taking puppies out of a crate and showing them to the sad dog. It took her a minute, but once she realized that these just may be her babies, she perked up and came to have a sniff. Within seconds her tail started spinning like a helicopter propeller and shortly after her puppies’ tails started wagging right along with hers.

Even though the video is from 2016, it’s so sweet that it’s making the rounds again. Watch the heartwarming reunion below:

Jane Fonda and Rita Moreno champion the perks of aging: ‘You get better at everything.’

Take it from the ultimate leading ladies themselves, getting older can also mean getting better.

In the upcoming sports comedy “80 for Brady,” legendary stars Jane Fonda, Sally Field, Lily Tomlin and Rita Moreno play best friends and devoted fangirls to Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who are hell-bent on watching their favorite football player in the Super Bowl. The story was inspired by a gang of real-life besties from 2017.

As the cast has been promoting the film, it’s been one hilarious story after another. From Fonda cracking Sally Field up over a naughty football pun to Moreno sharing flirty locker stories, it’s clear that for these ladies the fun has only just begun.

“I think as you get older, you get better at almost everything,” Fonda shared in an interview with AARP. “I love my work more than ever, and it feels more balanced now. I take things in stride more than I once did. Things are a little simpler.”

The “Grace and Frankie” actress has previously shared that even her sex life had improved over the years as she learned how to better understand and communicate her needs.

“Women, I think, tend to get better because they lose their fear of saying what they need,” she said. “We waste way too much time not wanting to say, ‘Wait a minute, hold it, hold it, no, no, no. Slow down, and a little to the left.’ We don’t want to do that…But when we get older it’s like, ‘No, I know what I want. Give me what I want.’” she told Andy Cohen during his SiriusXM radio show, “Andy Cohen Live.”

Moreno seconded Fonda’s statement in the AARP interview, saying “I will confess that I wake up smiling.” She added that when looking in the mirror she would sometimes find herself taken aback at all the years that have gone by, but it doesn’t take away any confidence. “I’ll put on some makeup and I’m absolutely amazing,” she quipped.

It’s certainly a refreshing take. Generally speaking, American culture often views youth as the holy grail of happiness, with the false assumption that somehow joy is a limited resource that is slowly siphoned off beginning at the age of 30. In fact, it’s not only joy that supposedly fades, but beauty, health and overall value.

But as many older people will tell you, nothing could be further from the truth. You actually get more self-assured, more powerful and (perhaps most important of all) more present to actually look around and appreciate the blessings surrounding you. All in all, it doesn’t sound like a bad deal.

Thankfully, conversations like these are becoming more widespread, helping us to remember that in many ways, our best days are still ahead of us.

10 things that made us smile this week

Happy tears are a weird thing, aren’t they?

Like, why do humans cry when we’re sad and when we’re happy? How can something touch our hearts in such a joyful way that our eyeballs start leaking saltwater? (And why does it totally ruin it to refer to crying as “eyeballs leaking saltwater”?)

Scientists don’t know exactly why people cry happy tears, but according to VeryWellMind, they have a few best guesses. One is that we cry for balance—to manage our intense emotions or help regulate our body and mood. Another guess is that we cry when we’re overwhelmed with happiness because we feel helpless and powerless over our emotions. A third theory is that crying signals vulnerability, which triggers empathy in others, therefore creating a social connection between people.

Whatever the reason, invoking tears of joy is one of our favorite pastimes here at Upworthy. We love it when readers make “cutting onions” jokes because the emotions behind them are pure, genuine and so very, very human.

Some of this week’s roundup of joy will make you smile, some will make you laugh and some may just make you cry those happy tears. So have a tissue handy and enjoy!

Luka Doncic Exited Thursday’s Mavericks-Suns Game With A Left Ankle Sprain

The Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns squared off on Thursday evening in a nationally televised clash between teams going in opposite directions in recent days. Dallas entered with four losses in the last five games, while Phoenix aimed to extend a four-game winning streak. In addition, there is plenty of history between these two clubs, headlined by the memorable Game 7 blowout win for the Mavericks over the Suns in Dallas just a few months ago. This time around, though, Luka Doncic was forced to the locker room within the four minutes of the game with an apparent ankle injury.

By the time the first quarter concluded, Doncic was ruled out for the evening with a left ankle sprain after a negative X-ray.

Doncic has dealt with ankle injuries in the past and, in this case, the video shows a clear mechanism when his foot stepped on another player’s and turns over. Hopefully, Doncic can avoid a long-term absence, and ankle injuries can be quite tricky. Still, it is undeniable that even a mid-term absence for Doncic would be problematic for Dallas — and of lesser importance, puts his status as an All-Star starter in jeopardy.

It could be argued that no team in the league is more reliant on a single offensive creator than the Mavericks. Beyond Doncic’s ludicrous counting numbers, Dallas scores 118.3 points per 100 possessions with Doncic on the floor and that number craters to 107.0 per 100 (with a -6.3 net rating) whenever Doncic is on the bench. In his stead, the Mavericks project to lean heavily on players like Spencer Dinwiddie and Tim Hardaway Jr., but everyone in Dallas will be holding their breath until a more detailed diagnosis is available.

‘BMF’: Here’s All The Music You Heard In Season 2, Episode 3

(SPOILERS for this week’s BMF episode will be found below.)

The third episode of BMF season two saw Meech and Terry deal with big troubles in their respective worlds. A cocaine drought is in full effect and Meech is down to do whatever is needed to receive a new supply to sell to the streets. He reaches out to K-9 for a re-up, but his request is initially denied. However, K-9 says he’ll fulfill Meech’s needs if he can accomplish a task for him. Unfortunately, Meech fails to get it done in the manner that K-9 requested. As for Terry, there’s competition in the car-ride service world, and a move from Terry earlier this season led to them tampering with the Flenory vehicles, which sets back his and Charles’ hard-earned progress. In both cases, Meech and Terry are left to figure out their next move, and while Terry does, Meech suffers a second, more-crushing blow.

The aforementioned events in the third episode of BMF season two, titled “Devli’s Night,” are soundtracked by songs that help to accentuate the emotions behind each scene. You can find a list of them belong as well as details about the scenes that they are heard in.

The following records were provided thanks to the Starz Public Relations team.

Keith Sweat — “Make It Last Forever”

This song can be heard at the 04:02 mark during a sex scene between Meech and Monique, a woman he’s been seeing who is played Kash Doll. Monique has always had relations with Lamar, who is a sworn enemy to Meech.

50 Cent — “Wish Me Luck” Feat. Charlie Wilson

This is the theme song of BMF. It plays at the 06:15 mark in “Devil’s Night.” While 50 Cent and Charlie Wilson’s voices are only heard on it, the song also features Snoop Dogg and Moneybagg Yo.

Mando — “War Time”

This plays at the 07:46 mark as Meech returns to K-9’s spot for another meeting. It’s here that Meech requests more product from K-9, an ask that’s initially denied, but accepted under the condition that Meech kidnaps a man named Travis to bring back to K-9.

Osinachi — “As The Story Goes”

We hear this record at the 9:51 mark as K-9 asks Meech if he remembers the loud individual from their last meeting. This leads to a quick flashback to episode two.

Don City — “Block Is Fed”

This record checks in at the 10:24 mark as Charles and Lucille arrive at the accident scene to see what happened with Terry and Nicole. Charles confronts Terry about who would intentionally mess with the car’s tires to cause the accident. Terry blames it on Devil’s Night, but Charles isn’t so convinced.

Dough Boy — “I See Yours”

At the 12:51 mark, Meech walks into BMF’s record store home base to talk to B-Mickie and inform him that K-9 has tasked him with finding the individual named Travis. B-Micke agrees to help Meech kidnap Travis in order to bring him to K-9 so that they can get more product.

Extreme — “Sloe Gin”

This slow piano tune plays around the 16:00 mark as Terry and Markeisha enjoy dinner together. Their meeting occurs after Terry learns that the men from the competing car-ride service were the ones who messed up his tires and caused the accident that he and Nicole were involved in together.

Flower — “BF Bang”

We hear this record at the 18:51 mark as Detective Bryant surprises B-Mickie and tells him to join him for a ride through his continued effort to trap Meech and finally arrest him.

Crystal — “Down At The Cross (Glory to His Name)”

This gospel record is played at the 23:23 mark during a church scene that features Snoop Dogg as Pastor Swift, Charles as the choir bassist, and a woman beside that sparks a bit of jealousy from Lucille in the crowd.

RJ’s Latest Arrival — “Shackles”

This song plays at the 31:45 mark when Charles visits Mable, a fellow church member, to fix the fan at her house. It’s clear that Mable is attracted to Charles, and she makes it quite clear as they dance together to this song.

Cicero — “All Musle 80s Flow”

We hear this song at the 36:01 mark as Meech and B-Mickie walk up to Travis’ house to hopefully kidnap him and bring him to K-9. Unfortunately, after they successfully lure him out, the trio engage in a shootout and accidentally kill him, thus failing to comply with K-9’s orders.

Brian McKnight Jr. — “Better Off Alone”

Brian McKnight Jr.’s “Better Off Alone,” plays at the 42:35 mark when Terry’s plan to tamper with the competing car-ride service’s car is successful. The driver’s brakes fail and he nearly crashes into another vehicle before he’s successfully able to bring the car to a stop on the side of the road.

Native — “Bring It Back”

The final record in this episode plays as Meech and Terry beat up a driver from the competing car service for tampering with the Flenory’s vehicles. They beat him up and leave them bloody and hurt in the street.

New episodes of ‘BMF’ are available on the STARZ app on Fridays at 12:00 am EST and on the STARZ TV channel at 8:00 pm EST.
