Alright, Forget Bane, Dave Bautista Wants To Be Lex Luthor In ‘Superman: Legacy’ Now

Earlier this week, Dave Bautista revealed that he’s not in the running to play a new version of Bane in James Gunn’s DC Universe. The actor seemed incredibly zen about the whole thing and totally understood that Gunn is aiming for a younger cast that will be around for at least the next decade. However, Bautista’s chill was apparently only temporary because now he wants to be Lex Luthor in the newly announced Superman: Legacy. The man has hustle, people.

“Someone mentioned something on Instagram I saw tonight, and they said, ‘Just hear me out, but Dave Bautista as Lex Luthor’ and I thought that was really interesting,” Bautista told IndieWire before revealing that, now that he thinks about it, the role is way more enticing than Bane anyway:

“So I don’t know man, I may make a call to James and see if they got anybody in mind, but that is more appealing to me at this point of my life and my career than playing Bane. You know, I just turned 54 last week and playing Bane, I think they need to start with someone younger and someone fresher and someone who could physically, you know, take on that part. With confidence, I couldn’t do it right now, and I would never do an injustice to a character like that, that means so much to the DC fans or the superhero fans in general and myself. So I just wouldn’t do it.”

Considering Superman: Legacy hasn’t cast its new Superman, and Gunn isn’t even finished writing the script yet, there’s probably time for Bautista to throw his hat in the ring for the Man of Steel’s arch-nemesis. That said, should he play the role exactly like his Glass Onion character Duke Cody and have a gun jammed in the front of his Speedo the whole time? We’re not not saying that. Just something to think about in this era of dramatic reboots and new awakenings.

Superman: Legacy hits theaters on July 11, 2025.

2023’s Music Festivals Are Embracing Pop Like Never Before, While Keeping Their Identity Intact

Just as any world-class pop star undergoes myriad reinventions over the course of their career, Coachella has evolved drastically from its 1999 roots. The first iteration of Coachella, headlined by Beck, Tool, and Rage Against the Machine, could not be further from the decidedly mainstream and, frankly, globalist lineup for this year’s festival.

On January 10, 2023, the official Coachella Twitter account revealed this summer’s lineup, a hodgepodge of the biggest names across pop, dance, and hip-hop, as well as left-of-mainstream indie darlings from the rock and alternative scenes. With a trio of headliners comprised of Frank Ocean, Bad Bunny, and BLACKPINK, this year’s Coachella lineup, alongside the recent lineup announcements of similarly massive events such as Governors Ball, music festivals have arrived at a place where they are unabashedly embracing the pop world through a selection of artists that simultaneously function as cultural touchstones and critical darlings.

A 1999 Rolling Stone article described the Coachella’s debut year as an event that “booked acts based on artistry rather than radio play,” the “anti-Woodstock,” if you will. Nearly a quarter of a century years since its inception, Coachella now boasts a line-up with no less than 23 artists who have notched entries on the Billboard Hot 100, nine of whom have earned at least one Top 10 hit. Similarly, this year’s Governors Ball lineup (which has some overlap with Coachella), houses 15 artists with Hot 100 entries, nine of whom have at least one Top 10 hit to their name. That’s not counting artists like Flo Milli and Shenseea who have garnered considerable cultural ubiquity without charting on Billboard’s main singles chart. While these lineups also feature beloved indie artists who have never touched a Billboard chart, there has been a clear shift towards mainstream pop across the festival circuit over the last decade. In their post-pandemic festival report, Vibrate revealed that Megan Thee Stallion was the most-booked festival act of the 2022 season with appearances at 25 of the world’s biggest music festivals.

The festival circuit’s embrace of more commercial pop acts has been a years-long process. After all, one of Coachella’s first major pop moments, Madonna’s iconic 2006 Confessions On A Dancefloor-themed Sahara Tent performance, happened in the midst of the rise of poptimism in music criticism circles, a movement that would usher in a new era of what Coachella could be with headlining sets from the likes of Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, and, of course, Beyoncé. Traces of poptimism can be found across this year’s major festival lineups in the sense that organizers made sure to secure acts that were pop behemoths who routinely break the mold for what traditional pop stardom looks like. To put it plainly, they weren’t looking to book pop stars who exclusively exist on Top 40 radio and adhere to the glossy blonde sheen of say Meghan Trainor or Ava Max. Instead, these lineups feature artists who expand and challenge our collective definitions of pop stardom with every release.

Lizzo, one of this year’s Governors Ball headliners, subverts traditional American pop stardom by centering the bodies of fat Black women and crafting smash hits that pull from gospel and hip-hop as much as they do from soul and R&B. Lil Nas X has several chart-conquering pop anthems to his name, but the nature of both his celebrity persona and music are essentially antithetical to the template of pop stardom that the festival circuit tends to avoid. He’s a young Black man who explicitly sings and raps about same-sex desire over soundscapes that range from marching band trap to bratty pop-rock. Reading the names of artists like Lil Nas X, Lizzo, and ROSALÍA on these festival posters makes sense because, although they are still thoroughly popular musicians, their music, stage show, and overall aesthetic are still markedly different from the most mundane versions of pop music and pop stardom. With hit songs that turn into trending TikTok sounds and vice versa, these artists are undoubtedly culturally relevant. Nonetheless, they all make music that routinely wins Grammys and gets lauded by critics because the quality of their music isn’t entirely dependent on their positioning in pop culture — it’s their positioning in pop culture that benefits from how strong their musical output is. In short, these are pop artists that have enough edge to stand out from the scores of faceless playlist filler across radio and streaming, and a level of artistic credibility and integrity that often evades their peers.

This year’s festival lineups also reveal just how globalist our understanding of pop stardom has become. In the past year, the most dominant and popular artists and songs in the world came from reggaeton, afrobeats, K-Pop, and hip-hop. In fact, this year marks the first time in Coachella’s history that every headliner is an artist of color. Now that streaming has leveled the playing field for accessibility to mainstream success for non-white and non-American artists, wildly successful genres like afrobeats and reggaeton get marquee slots at major Stateside musical festivals. At the same time, the artists chosen to represent these genres on this year’s festival circuit are incredibly layered. During his headlining set, Bad Bunny will likely perform a number of songs from Un Verano Sin Ti, an album that features tongue-in-cheek odes to a bombastic sex life (“Tití Me Preguntó”) alongside denunciations of gender-based violence (“Andrea”). Similarly, Burna Boy’s Love, Damini is likely to anchor his set list, and that album pairs an anthemic Toni Braxton rework (“Last Last”) with astute critiques on environmentalist politics (“Whiskey”). Like Lizzo and Lil Nas X, in addition to the music being critically acclaimed, Bad Bunny and Burna Boy are pop stars with something to say beyond the vapidity that’s often associated with mainstream pop.

If this year’s early lineup reveals prove anything, it’s that the music festival circuit has found a way to embrace mainstream pop while still maintaining their guiding principles of artistry over commerciality — and we get to enjoy some incredible combinations of artists as a result.

Jimmy Kimmel Prays That Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts Never Gives Up His Day Job For A Singing Career

While Eagles fans who were at Sunday’s game in Philadelphia were busy celebrating the Birds’ upcoming trip to the Super Bowl by climbing the city’s (greased) light posts, those who were watching the post-game revelry on television were forced to witness something terrifying: Eagles quarterback singing an ear-piercing rendition of “Fly, Eagles Fly,” the team’s victory song. It was, in a word, painful. As Jimmy Kimmel confirmed.

On Monday night, Kimmel recounted the ghastly bit of warbling when he explained how the game went down — and how it ended:

“After the game, Philly fans took to the streets to celebrate the way Philly fans celebrate: Loudly and drunkenly… The Eagles were led by Jalen Hurts, their quarterback, who may well win a Super Bowl. But I think it’s safe to say he will not be winning American Idol any time soon.”

Kimmel gave HurtS a break though, as singing is not really his job. (Thank god.) “Have you ever seen Adele throw a spiral? Terrible,” Kimmel added.

Kimmel, of course, was not the only one whose ears bled on Sunday night, as evidenced by the tweets below. But you can watch his recap of the event above. The Eagles will play in Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 12th.

An Additional Segment Of Bill Maher’s Long-Running HBO Show Will Soon Air On CNN On Friday Nights

Ever since Warner Bros. and Discovery merged in April 2022, the dozens of TV channels those brands own — and the hundreds of shows that air on them — have been in a state of flux. HBO has been one of the most famously hit properties, with beloved (and, yes, popular — or at least thought to be) shows like Westworld, Minx, and Los Espookys being cancelled, seemingly out of nowhere. Hell, even FBOY Island got the ax! So while there have been many losers as a result of this merger (including fans of those shows that now cease to exist), it seems the big winner in all of this is Bill Maher.

As TheStreet reports, the polarizing politico and comedian, who has been hosting HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher for 20 years now (it premiered in February 2003), is about to get even more airtime. The show’s “Overtime” segment, a more casual conversation between the host and his guests that generally continues after the filmed segment has ended and sees them talking about everything from politics to pop culture, will land a spot on CNN’s widening calendar on Friday nights, airing each week at 11:30 p.m.

As for the network’s relationship with Maher, CNN announced the programming news in a press release, which stated:

“Maher headlined his first special on HBO in 1989 and has starred in 12 HBO solo specials to date. Recognized as having the ability to ‘consistently get people talking’ and an ‘eclectic guest list,’ Maher’s Overtime joins several other recent partnerships between HBO and CNN.”

And we won’t have to wait long to watch it. Overtime will start its CNN run on Friday, February 3.

Donald Glover’s Next Show Is Inspired By Beyoncé, The Beyhive, And The Dark Side Of Standom

Now that Atlanta is all wrapped up, Donald Glover is setting his sights on another aspect of the recording industry: The dark side of standom. According to Vanity Fair, Glover’s next television project, Swarm, is inspired by Beyoncé and her infamous Beyhive.

The Hive has been one of the most notorious and feared fan groups in music for some time; critics and casuals alike must be wary of insulting Queen Bey (even unintentionally), lest they incur the wrath of her thousands of defensive, chronically-online stans. Not even Nicole Curran, the wife of the Golden State Warriors co-owner, was safe when she got a little too close to Jay-Z for comfort.

Glover’s new project will scrutinize stan culture through the story of Dre (portrayed by Dominique Fishback), whose obsession with a pop star (who is apparently very inspired by Beyoncé) takes her to some dark places, judging from the screenshots provided by Vanity Fair. Ironically, Dre’s sister will be played by Chloe Bailey — who is best known as one-half of sister duo Chloe X Halle and signed to Beyonce’s label, Parkwood. Meanwhile, Dre’s love interest will be played by Damson Idris, of Snowfall fame.

The show will be executive produced by Atlanta writer Janine Nabors and will stream on Amazon Prime Video.

The ‘King Of The Hill’ Revival Is Ready To Fire Up The Grill At Hulu

The King of the Hill revival has officially found a home on Hulu. After creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels kicked off “hot negotiations” back in March 2021, Hulu emerged as the victor and is bringing back the original cast from the hit series that ran for 13 seasons on Fox.

“We are all so excited to welcome back Hank, Peggy, and Bobby, and to see what they have to say about the world we live in and continue the conversations we began years ago,” ABC Entertainment, Hulu, and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals president Craig Erwich said in a statement. “This show has all of the perfect ingredients to meet this moment in animation at Hulu, and we’re so thankful to be having those conversations alongside this talented group.”

For those who aren’t familiar with the Hills or the classic animated comedy, here’s a rundown via Deadline:

The show, set in the fictional Arlen, Texas, follows the life of Hank Hill (Mike Judge), an enthusiastic seller of propane and propane accessories; his wife, Peggy (Kathy Najimy), the local Boggle champ and substitute teacher; and their 13-year-old son, Bobby (Pamela Adlon), who defies any expectation his father had for a son. Hank’s friends — conspiracy theorist Dale (Johnny Hardwick), military barber Bill (Stephen Root) and cool but inarticulate Boomhauer (Judge) — along with Peggy’s friends Minh and meteorologist Nancy, and Bobby’s friend Connie, help the Hills navigate a changing world.

According to writer Brent Forrester, the revival was sparked thanks to Donald Trump, whose single term as president made the characters and its small-town setting “very relevant again.” So… thanks… for that.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s Music Re-Enters The ‘Billboard’ 200 Chart Following David Crosby’s Death

The music industry is still mourning the passing of folk-rock pioneer David Crosby. Former bandmates Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young have shared touching tributes in his honor. Other entertainers like Jason Isbell have also shared their fondest memories of the late musician.

Now fans have joined together to show their love for Crosby. Whether intentional or not, due to the streaming uptick of the late entertainer’s discography, two albums have re-entered the Billboard 200 chart. The albums in question are Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s 1970 album Déjà Vu and their 2005 compilation Greatest Hits.

Déjà Vu landed in the No. 129 slot on the Billboard 200 chart, while Greatest Hits came in at the No. 156 spot. As Crosby is considered to be one of the premiere creative forces in the folk-rock and psychedelia movement of the ’60s during his time with the band The Byrds, this outpouring of love shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Given that the late musician was reportedly giddy about new material he was working on before his passing, Crosby would have most likely been excited to see his work re-entering the music charts.

James Gunn Drops Some Hints About The New ‘Game Of Thrones’-Inspired Wonder Woman TV Series

Both HBO and the DCEU have been undergoing extensive changes in order to keep up with all of the many Marvel titles that Disney+ has been churning out over the last year. In 2022 alone, Disney+ released eight (8!) different shows, films and specials that took place in the superhero universe, while DC was struggling with some other stuff. Now that DC Studios has given the reigns to Marvel alum James Gunn and Peter Safran, they are looking to compete with the various multiverses.

The duo has revealed their plans for the next phase of DC Studios, which includes six new films and five shows that will be produced in the coming years. One of the shows on the schedule is a new Wonder Woman series, titled Paradise Lost.

Gunn and Safran described Paradise Lost as a Game of Thrones-style drama taking place in Wonder Woman’s birthplace of Themyscira, which she visited in Wonder Woman 1984. The series will take place before the events of any of the DC Wonder Woman films, and focus on the all-female island and its political dynamics. It’s a promising plot that has been working out so far for the cast of Yellowjackets.

“One of our strategies is to take our diamond characters, which is Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and we use them to prop up other characters that people don’t know,” Gunn explained, so while we might not get to see Wonder Woman herself, we will see her ancestors of god-like women all living and fighting together. Which is a pretty good alternative! Gal Gadot is probably very relieved.

The Empire State Building Channeled Taylor Swift Following Its Widely Derided And Deeply Confusing Support Of The Philadelphia Eagles

Well, it’s official: the Empire State Building is officially in its Reputation era. And no, sadly, it’s not even an Easter egg for Taylor’s Version yet.

Using the same audio that Swift used for the intro to her Reputation tour, the Empire State Building layered it over a video montage of a bunch of articles and hate tweets directed at them. “We’ll see you at the Big Game,” they captioned the post.

As their social media team have been documented Swifties in the past, this move comes as no surprise.

The drama started after the football game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday when the Empire State Building decided to support the Eagles’ win by switching their lights to green. Immediately, sports fans met the Twitter account for a literal building with intense hate that boiled over into real life.

According to a post from someone live on the scene on Sunday, New York Giants fans flooded the lobby of the Empire State Building with two demands: that the lights be switched and their Twitter poster be fired.

Despite the building also later turning the building red for the Kansas City Chiefs, it appeared the sports bros were still pretty mad. Even New York’s mayor got in on the hate train by calling the move “unfortunate.” (The Eagles had previously beaten the Giants a week earlier.)

A few days later, it seems they are not only standing by their decision but are fully making the most of the hate.
