Missy Elliott Celebrated And Explained Why Her Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nomination Is Huge For Women In Hip-Hop

Yesterday (February 1) was an exceptionally busy pop culture news day, headlined by two major reveals: Beyoncé announced her Renaissance tour and Tom Brady retired again. Those two stories kind of overshadowed a big music moment: The 2023 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame nominees were announced. Among the nominees is Missy Elliott, and she’s thrilled about earning the nod in her first year of eligibility.

The rapper wrote in a celebratory Instagram post, “I have cried my eyes out [crying emoji] I am so HUMBLY GRATEFUL for this nomination with also 14 other Amazing artist so grateful To All of you & my fans who been through this journey with me I Thank You also 4 helping me get here [purple heart emoji] YOU ROCK.” She added in a similar tweet, “I’ve always dreamed big but to be nominated for this is bigger than I dreamed.”

In another tweet, she explained the historical context of her nomination and its importance, writing, “This is so important for us women in Hiphop because there’s never been a female rapper nominated & hopefully this nomination will open the door [folded hands emoji] [purple heart emoji].”

Indeed, Billboard notes Elliott is the female hip-hop artist to be nominated for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

So far, the only hip-hop artists to get inducted into the Rock Hall are Eminem, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, NWA, Jay-Z, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Biggie Smalls, Tupac Shakur, and Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five.

The Juno Awards Nominated Arcade Fire After The Win Butler Controversy, Faced Backlash, And Now They’ve Explained Themselves

A few days ago, the nominations for the 2023 Juno Awards (Canada’s equivalent of the Grammys) were announced. Some music fans took notice that Arcade Fire is nominated for Group Of The Year, a nod that comes after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct were made against Win Butler last summer. Now, Juno organizers have explained themselves.

In a statement sent to CBC Music, the Canadian Academy Of Recording Arts And Sciences said, “We look at Arcade Fire’s nomination for group of the year as one for the entire band. While we take the allegations very seriously, in this situation, we are also honouring the rest of the band for their success. We hope the allegations against Butler will not detract from the achievements of the other group members.”

After the nominations were announced, folks took to social media to voice their displeasure over the Arcade Fire situation. Journalist Jill Krajewski tweeted, “i’ll say it again: abusers in music constantly use their bands as both lure and cover for their violence. it’s impossible for @TheJUNOAwards to honour arcade fire without enabling win butler.” Canadian musician Jenn Grant wrote, “Arcade Fire nominated for @TheJUNOAwards group of the year??! Do we think that the musical group OTY representing this country should be made up of a lead singer who uses their power to act with sexual violence towards underage women? NO WE DO NOT!!!!”

Others made reference to how differently the Junos handled a related situation a few years ago. One Twitter user explained, “For reference, when the allegations against Jacob Hoggard emerged in 2018, Hedley was rightly pulled from the Juno Awards show and their nominations that year were rescinded. Win Butler and Arcade Fire apparently merit different treatment.”

How Much Will Netflix Charge For Password Sharing?

For years, sharing one’s Netflix password with friends and family was frowned upon but not verboten. No more. The streamer that started it all (which has fallen on hard times, though so have most others these days) announced long-in-the-works plans to crack down on multiple people leeching off the same account. But what happens if you do it anyway? That’s still up in the air, but the streamer may implement sometime in America that they’ve already tested doing elsewhere around the globe.

As per Forbes, in some countries Netflix has simply charged people a little extra if they share their account with someone they don’t live with. In certain places it’s not much: a measly $3 add-on. Or they may force people to fork over for another account, even their cheaper, ad-supported version. In other words, it’s still up in the air.

As for now, Netflix’s plan sounds like a bit of a pain, as per their own site:

Signing into Netflix outside of your home may lead to the device in use being blocked from Netflix. This could prevent you from signing into new devices while traveling, but Netflix has devised a workaround. Traveling users who want to use Netflix on a hotel smart TV, company laptop, etc. can request a temporary code from the service when signing in. This will give them access to their account for seven consecutive days.

Sounds like bad news not only for people who didn’t feel like shelling out Netflix’s ever-escalating monthly subscription price, but also people who regularly use their account on multiple devices, such as catching up on shows at the gym while monotonously plugging away at an elliptical machine. Whatever the case, the streamer may have pissed off a key horror icon.

Zara Larsson Apologized For Wearing A Dress Adorned With A Noted Nazi Band’s Logo: ‘Oopsie’

Zara Larsson is having a good year so far following the recent release of her song “Can’t Tame Her,” which shows her fun side, and she explained is about the way she is “very loud and I try to stay true to myself and surround myself with people who care about me, so we can all help each other and protect each other.”

Unfortunately, it looks like no one protected her from this PR mess. The singer attended the P3 Guld, an annual awards show put on by the Norwegian radio station RK P3, in a controversial dress. It’s adorned with logos of many metal bands such as Cannibal Corpse and Behemoth, but the biggest one is Burzum.

If you don’t know Burzum, their Wikipedia page should keep you occupied for some time. The project is Varg Vikernes, a neo-Nazi who was convicted for murder and arson. However, Burzum still maintains a lot of defenders today because of the 1996 cult-followed album Filosofem.

I think it’s safe to say that Larsson never took a trip to the Wikipedia page. In a statement, she said, “Oopsie, had no idea. Just thought my clothes looked cool. … It was unfortunate. … To clarify, it was not their merch I was wearing.”

Matt Gaetz Wasted A Ton Of Colleagues’ Time Being A Performative Nuisance During A House Committee Meeting

Last fall, amidst the failed red wave during the midterms, the GOP didn’t take back the Senate but they did earn a painfully slim majority in the House. They don’t have much power, but what they can do is sow chaos. That’s what Matt Gaetz has been doing ever since the House reconvened in early January. He helped drag out Kevin McCarthy’s ascent to the Speaker role for days, which almost ended with an intra-party fight. On Wednesday, he proved to be a performative, time-wasting nuisance.

As per Mediaite, the attention-loving MAGA representative derailed the House Judiciary Committee’s meeting for a good half hour by introducing an amendment to their rules. He proposed adding that they open each meeting by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. One problem: As Democrat Jerry Nadler pointed out, the House already opens each session by doing just that.

“I would oppose it simply on the grounds that, as members know, we pledge allegiance every day on the floor,” Nadler said, “and I don’t know why we should pledge allegiance twice in the same day to show how patriotic we are.”

Instead of getting down to business, Gaetz’s amendment only led to snipping between members of both parties. Republican Mike Johnson accused Nadler of skipping the pledge, which Nadler denied. Eventually, Democrat David Cicilline called Gaetz’s bluff, proposing they add an amendment to the amendment blocking anyone who supported the Jan. 6 insurrection, as Gaetz has.

“If we adopt this amendment, then we will be truthful in representing that stating this pledge is an affirmation of your defense of democracy and the Constitution,” said Cicilline. “It’s hard to take that claim seriously, if in fact, an individual who in any way supported an insurrection against the government of the United States is allowed to lead the pledge.”

Eventually Gaetz won. Cicilline’s amendment did not. So now lawmakers will have to say the Pledge twice on days, just so you know how patriotic people like Gaetz are. Maybe he just feels a tinge of guilt for trying to overturn the will of the American people, all to install a guy who lost re-election. Anyway, looks like it will be a long, annoying two years.

Shania Twain Never Thought Performing With Harry Styles At Coachella Would Be A ‘Landmark Moment’

Shania Twain doesn’t know her own power, apparently. Twain joined Harry Styles during his headlining Coachella set last April to perform “Man, I Feel Like A Woman” in matching sequined outfits. Somehow, the five-time Grammy winner didn’t think that would be a big deal.

“I was so relaxed about it,” Twain told Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe toward the end of their 57-minute sit-down interview out today, February 1. “I just thought, first of all, we have a casual back-and-forth anyway, Harry and I. … I was out of the country for that first weekend, and I said, ‘Well, I’m not gonna be there, but I’ll come on the second weekend.’ And he said, ‘OK.’ And then he comes back and says, ‘I really want you to do the first weekend. Is there any way?’”

She continued, “I didn’t realize the significance of that moment. I saw it as a moment to get together with Harry, but I didn’t see it as such a landmark moment.” After Lowe vouched that their duet was, in fact, a landmark moment, Twain added, “It was such a wonderful surprise — everyone’s reaction — and it makes sense to me now because it’s the Harrys and his age group and even younger that their moms had my music on, and they [were] in the backseat.”

In early January, Twain stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and explained how she developed a friendship with Styles.

“He was playing in New York, actually. This was before he really blew up, and I went backstage to meet him. We became texting friends at that moment,” she told Colbert. “He texted me a few weeks later, ‘Would you call my mom and wish her a happy birthday?’ I’m like, ‘Of course! Sure!’ … Harry and I have been friends ever since.”

Back with Lowe, Twain opened up about her “very bad” hospitalization for COVID-19 and pneumonia. “Every day, my lungs were filling up with inflammation,” she said. “Within 12 days, I was pretty much dying. Thankfully, I had plasma therapy, and it worked.” She also touched on nearly permanently losing her voice due to Lyme disease and undergoing throat surgery.

Twain’s album Queen Of Me is out Friday, February 3. Check out the cover and tracklist below, and watch Twain’s interview with Lowe above.

Paul Rudd Was Initially Not That Stoked About Joining The MCU, Comparing It To Doing ‘Dancing With The Stars’

By all accounts being a member of the MCU is a sweet gig. You have a steady job that pays well, and you can use the clout you acquire to get smaller projects off the ground. But at least when he was first courted by Kevin Feige and crew ages ago to play Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man, Paul Rudd wasn’t so into the idea.

“My agent set up a meeting with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Marvel was pretty new. They weren’t even part of Disney. It would’ve been like somebody saying, How would you feel about doing Dancing with the Stars? A superhero franchise was never on my radar,” Rudd said in a new interview with Men’s Health, as caught by Deadline.

“I never really thought I was the type of actor that they would offer any of those parts to,” Rudd explained. “But when this idea came around, I was excited about doing something that was so out of left field, and I knew that if it was announced that I was going to be joining a superhero franchise, most people would say, What the f**k? And I got to wear a superhero suit.”

And so Rudd, in an attempt to be “left field,” the Wet Hot American Summer alum wound up playing a superhero who can go super small, and he’s still doing it. It wasn’t the first time he threw a curveball with his career. After doing Clueless, he took an unexpected next step: He did a play.

“My agent said, What are you doing? My career was just starting. But I had a real clear vision then of what I wanted and how I wanted to do it,” he recalled. “I didn’t want to be considered a joke among actors who I really admire. I really wanted to learn how to do this right. I had a real focus.”

If You Are Missing The Cremated Remains Of A Loved One, You Might Want To Check With The Walkmen’s Hamilton Leithauser

The Walkmen excited many millennials with the announcement of their comeback late last year. The band, known for their infectious 2004 hit “The Rat,” revealed a whole reunion tour for 2023 that fans are looking forward to.

While the group has certainly been busy, frontman Hamilton Leithauser was recently distracted by a more morbid matter. Leithauser took to Twitter to explain how he received cremated remains in the mail and is unsure of what to do with them. Read it below.

“I just received package addressed to ‘current resident.’ Address was mine. Inside package are cremated remains of a man from Oct 2017. I do not know the man. I’ve lived here for 6 years.

I got in touch with the funeral home, and the director is a F#CKING ASSH#LE, doesn’t give a sh#t about this poor guy, and refuses to take them back. Now I have this stranger’s ashes in my kitchen. What should I do with them?

This feels a little bit Curb Your Enthusiasm. In case anybody wants to send hate mail, or wants to know where NOT to die, or send your loved ones, get in touch with Juan’s Funeral home at 509 Liberty Ave, Brooklyn.

John himself hung up on me.

This is an actual snippet of my conversation w John:

John: well I dunno…maybe he used to live there? Maybe he’s dead?

Me: Of course he’s f*cking dead you just mailed him to me!”

David Harbour and Lily Allen just gave the coolest home tour ever and people are loving it

Celebrity home tours are usually a divisive topic. Some find them fun and inspirational. Others find them tacky or out of touch. But this home tour has seemingly brought unanimous joy to all.

“Stranger Things” actor David Harbour and British singer-songwriter Lily Allen, whose Vegas wedding in 2020 came with an Elvis impersonator, gave a tour of their delightfully quirky Brooklyn townhouse for Architectural Digest, and people were absolutely loving it.

For one thing, the house just looks cool. There’s nothing monotone or minimalist about it. No beige to be seen.

The couple hired interior designer Billy Cotton and architect Ben Bischoff to use the 19th-century building’s classical Italian-style architecture (and its Italian-American history) as inspiration for the renovation. Along with that, they have some added layers of traditional English design, modern New York touches, a ton of floral wallpaper, crystal chandeliers, pink silk sheets…and a velvet emerald sofa for good measure.

The result? As Cotton told Architectural Digest, it was “as if they’d inherited the home from a kooky Italian nonna with fabulous taste.”

Also, Harbour and Allen are so. darn. cute. Throughout the entire video tour, they were able to make each other laugh, applaud each other’s taste and show affection towards each other. It’s lovely.

Watch:

All in all, people were equally inspired by the couple’s home and their relationship.

Here are some of the top comments:

“A house ain’t a home without love stored in its walls. You can feel how much love they have for each other. So sweet.”

“They are just such a cool couple and I love their quirky style. I was not expecting how floral some of their interior choices are, but I think they seem to be very attuned and open to each others’ tastes.”

“This has to be my all-time favorite AD tour. The two of them together are SO GOOD! And their home is like an exploration of the entire spectrum of design! The colors, the patterns, the style, function.. just all of it so clever and inspiring! Absolutely adored this house tour—thank you AD for bringing us this masterpiece!”

“Love these guys… they need to ‘present’ some show. They represent all the lovable qualities of being welcoming, confident, and humorous. Amazing home.”

“Their chemistry is so infectious.”

May we all get to be our weird and wonderful selves with someone who loves us exactly as we are.
