The Most Anticipated Hip-Hop Albums Of Spring 2023

Compared to the same time last year, it may not feel like hip-hop has been quite as productive. It’s been a great year for indie releases; Greedo came home with a new mixtape, underground faves Skyzoo and Oddisee both released excellent projects in January, and rising stars like Maxo and Nappy Nina crafted standout projects.

Likewise, plenty of buzzy faves released stuff; ZelooperZ, Ice Spice, Boldy James, Reuben Vincent, Big Scarr, Gloss Up, and Kash Doll all came back strong ahead of a flurry of end-of-month releases in February that seemed to signal a shift. Just check out Key Glock and Don Toliver‘s new projects. But looking forward, it looks like hip-hop’s penchant for surprise releases is gearing to strike, because although very few projects have been announced, such a wide-open field has to be inviting for anyone looking to make a name for themselves.

So, although things are looking pretty bare bones for the time being, here are the most anticipated hip-hop albums of spring 2023.

March 3

De La Soul — 3 Feet High And Rising, De La Soul Is Dead, Buhloone Mindstate, Stakes Is High, etc.

de la soul 3 feet high and rising
De La Soul

Okay, this one is a little bit of a cheat, I admit. None of these are new, so much as folks have been anticipating the coming of De La Soul’s long-lost catalog to streaming since… well… streaming started. Between a prolonged label dispute over publishing rights and a labyrinth of sample clearance issues, it seemed for some time that De La’s discography would be a curio consigned to the memories of Gen Xers and millennials, like the 100-point Wilt Chamberlain game. But here they all are, in high definition, 100 percent intact. The only downside is that Trugoy the Dove isn’t here to see it.

Masego — Masego

The Virginia-based polymath — he sings, raps, and plays the sax — is just about five years removed from his debut album Lady Lady. Since then, he has polished his self-devised TrapHouseJazz style and grown his fan base with a handful of strategically based viral favorite singles and a charming, charismatic social media presence that has rap fans very much looking forward to seeing what he does next.

Slowthai — Ugly

Fresh off the success of 2021’s breakout hit Tyron, the UK punk grime star is picking up right where he left off. Slow is known for the emotional push-pull of his music, which cycles through aggression and processing the trauma behind it. Ugly continues his tradition of fusing rap, rock, and electronic music with surprising vulnerability.

March 6

Talib Kweli & Madlib — Liberation 2

One of rap’s earliest experiments in the “free online release” mechanic gets a follow-up a decade and a half later as the Brooklyn MC reunites with one of rap’s most coveted producers. They’ve proven to be a match made in heaven in the past, and longtime fans are excited to hear the evolution of their chemistry.

March 10

6lack — Since I Have A Lover

It always feels iffy to include 6lack in hip-hop lists considering he’s as much of an R&B traditionalist as he is a bars-first rhyme spitter, and with every project, he can easily split the difference or go all-in on just one side of things. I feel prettty confident in saying this will be one of the better projects to come out this year, though.

March 11

Yeat — Afterlyfe

I’ll be honest and say I don’t quite have the best handle on what exactly makes Yeat so damn popular. There’s a unique blend of Gen-Z nihilism and deep-web-bred meme humor I suspect I’m missing (have I finally found myself on the other side of the Lil B equation?), but anyone with eyes can see that he’s having quite the effect on online discourse. Fans are looking forward to his next album, so I’m looking forward to his next album — even if only in hopes of finally “getting it.”

April

Lil Uzi Vert — The Pink Tape

There’s no hard date attached to this one as far as I can tell — and it would be largely useless, considering the release drama around this album so far, as well as Uzi’s last one, Eternal Atake — but Genius has a tentative April release date. Given Uzi has already blown through the original October date and another February one. All that has only served to increase the anticipation surrounding this release — especially since Uzi promised the delays were to ensure the tape wouldn’t “suck.”

Destroy Lonely — If Looks Could Kill

Similarly to Lil Uzi Vert’s Pink Tape, this one is just posited by Genius for an April date, and simliarly to Yeat, there’s a buzzy, grown-up-confusing element to Destroy Lonely’s music that makes him heavily anticipated, but only by those “in the know.” A clear descendant of the SoundCloud Rap era he’s also a rap nepo baby (his dad I-20 was one of Ludacris’ Disturbing Tha Peace artists in the 2000s), but his vibe is very inspired by Trippie Redd and Playboi Carti — whose label he’s signed to.

May

Your guess is as good as mine. None of the usual forums or resources have any information about what might be coming out, but no one on our Most Anticipated Albums Of 2023 list has dropped yet, and just before summer would be an opportune time for anyone looking to dominate the latter half of the year.

GloRilla Is ‘Praying Everybody Is OK’ After Her Rochester Concert Reportedly Ended With A Crowd Surge, Killing At Least One Fan

GloRilla completed her Anyways, Life’s Great Tour on February 25. The breakout Memphis rapper’s first-ever headlining trek included a Cardi B cameo to perform “Tomorrow 2” at the New York City stop, but her most recent concert at Main Street Armory in Rochester, New York took a devastating turn on Sunday night, March 5.

The Associated Press reported this morning, March 6, that “false fears of a shooting … sent a crowd surging toward the exits, killing one person and injuring nine others.” According to the outlet, a 33-year-old woman died at a hospital.

The Rochester Police Department provided a lengthy update expounding on those details.

The press release reads, in part:

“Just after 11 p.m., as the show ended, concertgoers began heading to the exits to leave. As people began to exit, the crowd began to surge and rushed towards the exit. There are some reports that shots were heard, causing the crowd to panic, but that has not been confirmed. Officers that were detailed outside of the venue were eventually able to make their way inside, where they located three females with significant injuries.

Officers, Security, and EMS provided life-saving measures on the three females before they were transported to Strong Hospital. Sadly, one of the victims passed away and the other two are currently in critical condition, fighting for their lives.

As the night went on, an additional seven people arrived at local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries from the event. Preliminary reports from people at the scene indicate that these injuries were caused by being trampled. We do not have any evidence of gunshots being fired or anyone being shot or stabbed.”

An investigation is ongoing, and Rochester Police urged “anyone with video, pictures, or anything else that can help us piece together what happened last night” to call 911 or email them.

GloRilla tweeted Sunday night, “I’m just now hearing about what happened wtf [three crying emojis] praying everybody is ok [four praying-hands emojis].”

People are sharing ‘what screams’ someone has ‘no life.’ Here are 21 of the best responses.

When someone says “get a life,” it’s usually a pejorative comment telling someone that they need to become more successful or build something for themselves. But in some circumstances, it’s a totally warranted reminder that someone needs to get their nose out of other people’s business and focus on themselves for a change.

A viral thread on Reddit that received over 14,000 responses asked the online community, “What Screams ‘I Have No Life’?” and it was a rebuke of the people whose pettiness makes our lives unbearable.

Hopefully, a few people read the thread and decided to make some changes in their lives.

One of the major targets in the thread are the annoying coworkers who love to gossip and talk smack about fellow office mates behind their backs. There are few things worse than going out to lunch with coworkers and the only conversation they have is about the people who aren’t there.

As the old saying goes, small minds talk about people, medium minds talk about events and big minds talk about ideas.

The thread also calls out those who feel the need to air all of their dirty laundry on social media to get attention. It also mentions those who waste their time picking fights with total strangers, or worse, people they know on Facebook.

Finally, another group that got a lot of attention is those who are super judgmental, whether that means having a problem with other people’s hobbies or being overly invested in how they live their lives. If they’re not hurting anyone, why is it your concern?

The thread was an excellent reminder for us to be aware of the people in our lives who cause drama by acting like mean girls long after their high school expiration date.

Here are 21 of the best responses to “What Screams ‘I Have No Life’?”

1.

“Only ever talking badly about other people. Had some coworkers like this once and being around them 8 hours a day was f**king DRAINING.” — SomeOtherThirdThing

Ruralist added:

“My coworkers are like this. The gossip begins even before they’ve clocked in. I’ve stopped talking to them about anything except what’s necessary for work.”

2.

“The guy in my office who monitors how long everyone has been away from their computer.” — No-Review-2307

3.

“Calling cops on kids with a lemonade stand.” — SuvenPan

4.

“Posting everything about your personal business and drama on social media.” — UseYona

Sohcgt96 added:

“You know what is just the f**king worst? Vague, dramatic posts that clearly exist to bait people to ask what’s wrong or what you’re talking about.”

5.

“As a parent with kids in school, definitely the Facebook Moms group.” — Mean_Manufacturer_61

R0ttenbeauty added:

“Those Facebook mom groups are the worst! Nothing but drama and bashing on one another. Well, at least the one I used to be in.”

Kwebber added:

“I’d also throw in Youtuber/streamer influencer in general to this as well.”

10.

“Tracking someone on their phone, real story, my husband was sick one day and both his sister and mom started tracking his phone, started texting early Monday morning wondering why he was still at home.” — LivntheDream430

ExCoCThrowaway added:

“My husband’s family added me to their Apple family when we got married. Until about a month ago I had no idea they were using it to track me. I turned it off when I realized it and got a call from my sister-in-law asking me why I turned it off. Turns out they were calling my husband and telling him my every move. He didn’t care and told them it was my business but no one ever told me. Had to figure it out on my own. Sometimes I hate technology.”

11.

“Making fun of other people’s hobbies.” — CLbandit38

12.

“Y’know I want to talk about the exact opposite of this: What screams ‘I’m living life the way it’s intended to’?

Well, I have a buddy who I think is a pretty great person. He never gets into any drama, always does what he has to do on time, and plays the games he enjoys in his spare time. Life throws shit at him sometimes, but he just deals with it and continues to just do whatever he does like nothing happened.

He just lives life, and as a result, he is able to extract a good amount of happiness from it. He says he is just happy. He has defined himself as a simple man, and I think that’s how life should be lived. Like, just live your life, dude. For him, is just that simple.” — GLnoG

Lil Baby Received Blowback From His ‘California Breeze’ Performance At The 2023 Kids’ Choice Awards

The 2023 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards were staged at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Saturday, March 4. Lil Baby avoided getting slimed, unlike fellow performer Bebe Rexha, but a select few viewers were a little green about his performance.

Apparently, Baby’s top-10 Billboard Hot 100 hit “California Breeze” didn’t belong on Nickelodeon because of its explicit and suggestive lyrics, which were censored for the young audience. (How dare Baby perform under inflatable palm trees and bring his two young sons on the stage with him?)

The squealing kids in attendance couldn’t get enough of Baby, but reviews on the internet were mixed. Some people didn’t understand the backlash given The Weeknd’s past controversial nomination for “Can’t Feel My Face,” very obviously about cocaine, at the Kids’ Choice Awards; others didn’t understand how Nickelodeon allowed Baby on its airwaves.

Baby didn’t have time to pay attention to the criticism, as if he’d care anyway, because he also performed across town at Rolling Loud California on Saturday night.

Before this weekend, Lil Baby performed “California Breeze” and “Forever” featuring Fridayy on the January 28 episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by Michael B. Jordan.

Baby dropped his “Forever” video on February 27, squeezing as much juice as possible from last October’s It’s Only Me. His third studio album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, making it his third career No. 1 album.

All The Best New Music From This Week That You Need To Hear

Keeping up with new music can be exhausting, even impossible. From the weekly album releases to standalone singles dropping on a daily basis, the amount of music is so vast it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks. Even following along with the Uproxx recommendations on a daily basis can be a lot to ask, so every Monday we’re offering up this rundown of the best new music this week.

This week saw a new side of Nicki Minaj and a J summit. Yeah, it was a great week for new music. Check out the highlights below.

For more music recommendations, check out our Listen To This section, as well as our Indie Mixtape and Pop Flash newsletters.

Nicki Minaj — “Red Ruby Da Sleeze”

Nicki Minaj is Nicki Minaj, but she’s also a number of other people, like Roman Zolanski and Chun-Li. Now, she has added Red Ruby Da Sleeze to her list of alter egos by debuting them on a new self-titled song. Ruby introduces herself by rapping, “Only on them Cs if it’s breeze / Red Ruby Da Sleeze / Chinese on my sleeves / These wannabe Chun Lis / Anyway, ni hao / Who the f*ck told b*tches they was me know.”

Kali Uchis — “Deserve Me” Feat. Summer Walker

Uchis had one of last week’s most hyped new albums with Red Moon In Venus, her well-received third full-length. She carries the LP but gets assists here and there, like from Summer Walker on “Deserve Me,” a smooth number that’s ready for nighttime.

J-Hope and J. Cole — “On The Street”

The biggest J’s of hip-hop and K-pop have linked up at last with “On The Street.” This collaboration is especially meaningful for BTS member J-Hope, as he’s long been a passionate fan of J. Cole and has been forthcoming about the rapper’s influence on him.

Boygenius — “Not Strong Enough”

Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker are finally doing it: releasing a full-length album under their collaborative project, Boygenius. They’ve offered enticing advance tastes of the project so far, the latest being last week’s “Not Strong Enough,” which comes with a video that shows off just how much the three enjoy basking in each other’s auras.

6lack — “Since I Have A Lover”

6lack recently announced when his anticipated new album Since I Have A Lover Is Dropping (later this month), and now we have the title track. 6lack called the track “the highs of having a healthy love, compressed into song format,” adding, “It’s a note to self, that I’m no longer who I was or where I was, and that there’s a bigger purpose starting to reveal itself in the things I create.”

Arlo Parks — “Impurities”

My Soft Machine is coming in May but before that, Arlo Parks has offered a taste of her forthcoming album with “Impurities.” Uproxx’s Alez Gonzalez notes that on the song, Parks “celebrates her chosen community, who embraces her impurities and encourages her to do the same.”

Don Toliver and Travis Scott — “Embarrassed”

Don Toliver quickly followed his new album Love Sick up with a deluxe edition, and who wouldn’t when the expanded album adds a Travis Scott collab to the proceedings? Toliver also didn’t wait long to perform “Embarrassed” live, as Scott popped up at Toliver’s release concert a few days ago.

Gorillaz — “Crocadillaz” Feat. De La Soul and Dawn Penn

Speaking of meaningful additions via deluxe albums, on the expanded version of Cracker Island, Gorillaz reunited with regular collaborators De La Soul on “Crocadillaz.” This comes at a particularly bittersweet time for De La Soul: Their music is finally streaming after years of waiting, but this follows the recent death of group member Trugoy, who leads the way on the new Gorillaz collab.

Yves Tumor — “Heaven Surrounds Us Like A Hood”

Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds) is out soon (maybe by the time you finish reading the title). Yves Tumor dropped “Heaven Surrounds Us Like A Hood” last week and Uproxx’s Flisadam Pointer notes it “spins that narrative that no matter how pure your intentions are, eventually, life will chew you up and spit you out.”

The Dare — “Good Time”

The Dare (aka Harrison Patrick Smith) earned some attention with the 2022 single “Girls,” which aesthetically hearkens back to the 2000s dance-ready indie rock of artists like LCD Soundsystem. The Dare returned last week with more of the same on “Good Time,” which Smith described as “the hangover to the celebration of ‘Girls.’”

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

‘The Last Of Us’ Moment Between ‘Baby Girl’ Ellie And Her New Dad Joel Really Tugged At Fans’ Heartstrings

The Last of Us just delivered another devastating episode with a callback to the game that has left fans begging for HBO to start paying their therapy bills.

The show’s penultimate episode, “When We Are In Need,” was full of cults, cannibalism, and Pedro Pascal torturing bad guys. Still, it was the final few minutes that really broke audiences and had viewers scrambling on Twitter.

For most of the hour-long installment, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) has been trying to care for and protect a still-bedridden Joel as he recovers from his stab wound. She encounters David, the leader of a nearby cult while out hunting, and that meeting sets off a chain of events that ends with Ellie nearly becoming the group’s next meal and a miraculously-healed Joel rushing to rescue her. But before he can, Ellie hatches her own escape plan, one that ends with a fiery face-off, an attempted sexual assault, and a gruesome death for David courtesy of Ellie and her handy meat cleaver.

It’s a dramatic rollercoaster that already had fans feeling a bit fragile but then Pedro Pascal had to go and utter the words “baby girl,” turning audiences everywhere into sobbing slushpiles of unresolved daddy issues.

No really, this is what emotional terrorism looks like.

The scene hit viewers particularly hard because it marks the first time since the death of Joel’s daughter, Sarah, that the stoic smuggler has embraced the role of fatherhood again. He’s been acting as a pseudo-guardian for Ellie since the pair left Boston, and they’ve bonded over their shared traumatic experiences while on the road, but Joel hasn’t really shown any affection or love for the girl until now.

And the internet is having a tough time handling it.

We only have one episode of The Last of Us left (for this first season), so please make an appointment with your therapist now, people.

‘I Pulled A Christian Bale’: Hugh Grant Admits To Tantrum Regrets On The ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Set

With Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves getting ready to roll into theaters this month, Hugh Grant is opening up about filming the swashbuckling fantasy film based on the massively popular roleplaying game. While Grant appears to be having a ton of fun in the trailers, the Paddington 2 star recently admitted that he may have thrown an unfortunate tantrum while filming Honor Among Thieves.

In Grant’s defense, he thought he was yelling at a movie exec, which would’ve been a worthy target of his ire, but when Grant realized he was punching down instead of up, the actor felt awful and immediately apologized.

“I lost my temper with a woman in my eyeline on day one. I assumed she was some executive from the studio who should have known better,” Grant told Total Film (via Yahoo! Entertainment). “Then it turns out that she’s an extremely nice local woman who was the chaperone of the young girl. Terrible. A lot of groveling…”

Ever the dry comic, Grant couldn’t help but make a quip about the whole thing. “I pulled a Christian Bale,” he said, referencing Bale’s infamous 2009 meltdown on the set of Terminator: Salvation. Of course, it could’ve been worse. Grant could’ve joked about S&M with the woman, which has been his go-to move while promoting his villainous turn as Forge the Rogue.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves opens in theaters on March 31.

The Saints Are Signing QB Derek Carr To A 4-Year Deal

In an offseason that could see some significant quarterback moves made by a number of teams, the New Orleans Saints have become the first team to land a new star signal-caller, as reports emerged on Monday morning they were signing former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr to a 4-year deal.

Carr confirmed the deal shortly after on Twitter.

The reporting on the deal also led to some funny confusion, as Mike Garafolo had the first of the news but said the Saints were signing David Carr, Derek’s brother who was the former No. 1 overall pick of the Texans and is now an NFL Network analyst, leading to the elder Carr having some fun with it.

With the Carr signing, the Saints will continue their streak of avoiding using a first round pick on a QB, as they have not done so since picking Archie Manning in 1971. They will hope Carr will bring them the steady production they’ve been unable to find since Drew Brees’ retirement, as Carr has been an ironman of sorts since coming into the league, starting at least 15 games in each season as a pro. Carr will certainly be an upgrade over their recent situation with Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton, and Taysom Hill, but how much of a step forward they take remains to be seen, as Carr has always been productive but also prone to turnovers and poor decision-making at inopportune times.

That said, in an NFC South division with a total void at the top with Tom Brady’s retirement, the Saints will be in position to take up that mantle pending the moves of the Panthers, Falcons, and Bucs after a year where all four teams fell short of a .500 record. Now all of the attention shifts to Aaron Rodgers’ situation in Green Bay and Lamar Jackson’s situation in Baltimore, with teams like the Jets and Falcons in pursuit of both, as teams will hope to see those quarterbacks have their futures decided before the Draft.

Bella Ramsey Didn’t Have The Greatest Time Filming The Cannibal Episode Of ‘The Last Of Us’

For Bella Ramsey, the scariest part of Sunday’s episode of The Last of Us wasn’t the cannibals. It was the weather.

“When We Are in Need” was filmed in Canada… in winter… with sub-freezing temperatures. No wonder Ellie got out her aggression on David. “Yep, that was February in Canada. It was very, very cold,” Ramsey told GQ UK. “That scene where I meet David and James, Troy Baker’s character, in the forest, that was the coldest day that we shot. It was -17°C.” That’s 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ramsey said her voice changed during the scene because of the extreme cold. “Hearing it back — I’ve just heard the ADR, I haven’t actually seen the episode yet — it’s so hard to speak normally when it’s that cold, like your mouth just doesn’t work. And I was holding the real gun, because the rubber one didn’t look real enough, or they didn’t have it, or something,” she explained.

It didn’t help that Ali Abbasi, who directed the episode, is a fan of long-takes, “like, eight-minute long takes,” Ramsey continued, “holding this super heavy gun in the freezing cold, it was… everything you see is very real.”

If only the Fireflies were based in warm Aruba. But nooo, they had to be in the chilliest part of North America.

John Oliver Dragged Ron ‘Tiny D’ DeSantis For His Weird Dating Trick To Weed Out Women Who Will Correct Him

John Oliver went to town on Ron DeSantis after learning about the Florida governor’s bizarre dating tactic during his bachelor days. As the Last Week Tonight host explained, DeSantis (or “Tiny D,” according to the latest Trump nickname) would tell a potential date that he wants to take her out for Thai food, only he’d purposefully mispronounce it as “thigh” food. If the date corrected him. DeSantis would immediately bounce because he doesn’t want a woman who will correct him.

Oliver couldn’t believe that “Business Fred Flintstone” would actually do this in real life, and it made even less sense when he tried to imagine the scenario playing out. Via The Daily Beast:

“You’re out to dinner and out of nowhere your date tells you that he really likes ‘thigh food.’ And you think, ‘Wait, did he just call Thai food ‘thigh’ food? I might have misheard.’ But then he goes on to say he knows a great ‘thigh food’ restaurant in the area, all while staring very intently at you, almost studying your reaction. So, as politely as you can, you say, ‘Wait, do you mean Thai food? Like, from Thailand?’ And then suddenly his face drops and he says, ‘Sorry. I forgot I have a doctor’s appointment tonight’ and he leaves—leaving you with both the check and the single greatest first date disaster story of all time.”

Oliver, did however, use the dating trick as an opening to roast Fox News for its fawning coverage of DeSantis, much to Trump’s dismay.

“I’ll put it this way,” Oliver said. “If Fox News ever went on a date with Ron DeSantis, they definitely wouldn’t correct him when it called it ‘thigh food.’”
