Paul George Explained How He Came To Recognize ‘I Don’t Think I’m The 1 Guy’ On A Title Team

There was a time when Paul George was the leading man on a team that was a legitimate contender, as the Indiana Pacers reached back-to-back Eastern conference Finals in 2013 and 2014, only to run into the Big Three era Heat.

Now, he happily calls himself the No. 2 in Los Angeles to Kawhi Leonard, a role he willingly embraced when the Clippers came calling about a potential trade that would bring both him home alongside Leonard in 2019. To go from a budding superstar who was the central figure on a team to embracing a secondary starring role isn’t something many players do willingly, particularly in their prime years, but George took a wide view and realized that, to try and win a championship, he just wasn’t going to be able to do it as “The Guy.”

On this week’s Old Man and the Three podcast with JJ Redick, George explained the process he went through to come to that realization and the self-awareness and comfort in who he was as a person and player it required to willingly become the second fiddle.

Redick notes how rare it is for someone to have this mindset, because part of becoming an elite athlete is having such an insane self-confidence that it’s almost impossible not to believe you should be “the guy.” George, though, lived through that and I have little doubt running up against the Big Three era Heat shaped his view of what an elite team really looks like, and saw the sacrifices guys like Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade made to make that possible. He also notes how his experience in OKC, where he had one of the best seasons of his career next to Russell Westbrook, showed him that playing off another star can bring out the best in him.

George also explains that, for all his success, he’s never won a title at any level and just wants to figure out how to do that by any means necessary. He’s made “a shit ton” of money, in his words, and just wants to find that way to a championship, which he thinks calls for him to take on that No. 2 role. It’s admirable of George, and the truth is, the list of true No. 1 guys who have led teams to titles is very short. Of current players, that list is LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kawhi Leonard, and (depending on who you ask about that era of Warriors basketball) Kevin Durant.

That’s five guys and it’s really hard to be in that group — and most of them had All-Star assistance. Being the secondary star isn’t a bad gig at all, and being “the guy” is only really a big deal when it comes time to talk about all-time legacies and stacking up greats against greats — as we’ve seen with the Durant “bus driver” debate in recent years. For George, he seems fine not being in those conversations and just wants his shot a jewelry. Whether this season will bring that opportunity in L.A. remains to be seen, but he hopes this is the year Kawhi is healthy enough for him to play that second role for the entirety of a postseason run.

The Best Documentaries For Women’s History Month

Women have been putting in the work for a long time, moving the needle one movement at a time and risking their careers, reputations, and relationships to see the dream of equality come to fruition. And these documentaries, they prove that.

To celebrate Women’s History Month, we’ve rounded up some of the most fascinating and inspiring films that shine a light on the fight for Women’s Rights. Whether it’s on the field, on the screen, in the courtroom, the boardroom, or on the battlefield, these docs show the courage and determination women have had to wield to get sh*t done. Applaud them by streaming some.

Jane Fonda In Five Acts

Year: 2018
Cast: Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, Richard Nixon
Genre: Documentary, Biography
Rating: TV-14
Runtime: 133 minutes
Director: Susan Lacy
Trailer: Watch Here

Plenty of celebrities claim to be activists but few have the mugshots and the decades of boots-on-the-ground work that actress Jane Fonda does. Yes, she protested the Vietnam War, and yes, the moniker “Hanoi Jane” still sticks some 50 years later, but Fonda’s philanthropic and revolutionary efforts extend past just one war. She balanced her unparalleled resume on-screen — in films like 9 to 5 that pushed the women’s cause forward — with protest efforts behind the camera, giving us a model for what intersectional feminism looks like by proving it’s possible to fight for more than just one cause. This doc pieces together her history of activism, focusing on her work with women’s movements in the Middle East, South America, the States, Africa, and beyond, with some illuminating and colorful commentary by the A-list friends who know her best.

LFG

Year: 2021
Cast: Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Rachel Maddow
Genre: Documentary, Sports
Rating: TV-MA
Runtime: 105 minutes
Director: Sean Fine, Andrea Nix
Trailer: Watch Here

This HBO doc understands the best argument for equal pay in the world of women’s sports won’t take place in a courtroom — it happens on the field. After years of asking for better pay and working conditions, the U.S. Women’s Soccer team started demanding equity in their sport instead, and they do so here by dominating in the 2019 World Cup, bringing yet another star home for their country as the U.S. Men’s team continues to fail on an international level. With an intimate look into the grueling training and preparation required for the global tournament balanced against the draining legal saga some of the team’s star players, including Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, had to contend with while fighting for each World Cup win, the doc makes a compelling case for why the onus of equal pay shouldn’t fall on the players’ shoulders.

Hysterical

Year: 2021
Cast: Iliza Shlesinger, Sherri Shepherd, Margaret Cho
Genre: Documentary, Comedy
Rating: TV-MA
Runtime: 87 minutes
Director: Andrea Blaugrund Nevins
Trailer: Watch Here

Being funny is hard work, especially when you’re a female comedian contending with the toxic boys’ club of stand-up. Still, this condensed and refreshingly honest look at life on the stage never gets bogged down by the negative. Instead, as is their way, the women tapped to tell their stories manage to find the humor and reliability amongst all the muck they’ve waded through. Sitdown interviews with names like Iliza Shlesinger and Margaret Cho are coupled with archive footage of the legends who came before them — think Joan Rivers and Ali Wong — and more recent, headline-making acts from newcomers like Kelly Bachman who went viral for calling out Harvey Weinstein during her set. The punchline may be the ridiculous, cringe-worthy hoops these women were made to jump through to be considered funny but thankfully, they kept going and this doc goes a long way in highlighting the progress they’ve made.

Knock Down The House

Year: 2019
Cast: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cori Bush
Genre: Documentary
Rating: PG
Runtime: 87 minutes
Director: Rachel Lears
Trailer: Watch Here

The current political climate is so bogged down by partisan in-fighting and performative outrage it’s easy to forget that Capitol Hill used to be a place where people went to fight for change. We’re not saying this doc, which follows the grassroots campaign of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, will make you believe in Democracy again, but it is inspiring, just in a different way. By showcasing her charisma and approachability while also diving into more intimate parts of her life, like her relationship with her late father, this feel-good look at the rise of Ocasio-Cortez remind us of the power women can wield when they set their mind to something.

Homecoming

Year: 2019
Cast: Beyonce, Jay-Z
Genre: Documentary, Music
Rating: TV-MA
Runtime: 137 minutes
Director: Beyonce, Ed Burke
Trailer: Watch Here

Beyoncé’s history-making Coachella performance was enough to temporarily rename the music festival Beychella a few years ago but for fans who couldn’t afford to see Queen Bee perform live, this backstage pass is more than just a concert in streaming form. Are there killer performances, musical mash-ups, and dance routines? Sure. But what really makes this music doc stand out besides the talent of its star is the intimate look fans are given into Beyoncé’s personal life, from her surprise pregnancy to her struggle to get in shape before the event and all the in-between madness and heartbreak.

Reversing Roe

Year: 2018
Cast: Donna Howard, Brigitte Amiri
Genre: Documentary, Historical
Rating: TV-14
Runtime: 99 minutes
Director: Ricki Stern, Anne Sundberg
Trailer: Watch Here

Watching this doc in light of the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade is, admittedly, difficult. It’s devastating to see the predictions made here — that eventually, the government and not women will decide what happens to women’s bodies — come true. But even if we know where the journey has stalled, it doesn’t make the incredible work done by the activists in this film, or the knowledge of the bloody history of this fight, any less important. From the women who marched to the lawmakers who tried to legislate protections for women’s healthcare to the clinic workers injured and killed when “pro-life” activists committed acts of domestic terrorism, there’s something to be learned here. At the very least, you’ll come away angry and motivated to continue the fight.

Feminists: What Were They Thinking?

Year: 2018
Cast: Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Laurie Anderson
Genre: Documentary
Rating: NA
Runtime: 86 minutes
Director: Johanna Demetrakas
Trailer: Watch Here

If you’ve ever wondered what historians are talking about when they distinguish between first, second, and third-wave feminism, this doc will go a long way in educating you on the movement in a way that feels less pedantic and more inspiring. It recruits artists and feminists like Judy Chicago, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Sally Kirkland to examine feminism in the 1970s by way of a pivotal photo project by Cynthia MacAdams that captured the Equal Rights Movement as it was happening. In doing so, it delivers a broader definition of feminism, one that’s graduated from Suffragette iconography to a portrait that crosses lines of race, class, privilege, and profession. It’s both inspiring, to see how far the cause has come and galvanizing, to see how far it still needs to go.

Genre: Documentary, Sports
Rating: PG-13
Runtime: 103 minutes

When women accomplish something as profoundly difficult as competing at the Olympics, they often have a more challenging road to get there than their male counterparts. That’s especially true for the female gymnasts featured in this powerful, award-winning documentary that exposes the abuse and cover-ups at the center of the women’s national team’s success. The Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal rocked the world of gymnastics just a few years ago and this film looks at the controversy from the point of view of reporters at the Indianapolis Star in charge of exposing it. A cover-up spanning two decades and involving higher-ups at both US Gymnastics and Michigan State where Nassar served as a physician and professor, this revealing investigation into a sinister culture that’s hidden behind the success of its top female athletes makes you rethink everything you thought about the Olympic dream, and what’s sacrificed in pursuit of it.

He Named Me Malala

Year: 2015
Cast: Malala Yousafzai, Ziauddin Yousafzai
Genre: Documentary
Rating: PG-13
Runtime: 88 minutes
Director: Davis Guggenheim
Trailer: Watch Here

You likely already know the story of Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani schoolgirl targeted by the Taliban for insisting that women have the same right to an education as men. But that assassination attempt on a school bus in 2012 wasn’t the end of her story. It wasn’t the beginning of it either, as this award-winning doc sets out to prove. Named for an Afghani folk hero, Malala was a rebel and a fighter from an early age, one of the few girls in her village who continued her education despite threats from grown men trying to suppress her potential. The film explores how her father inspired her quest — warning, you’ll get misty-eyed anytime the pair talk about their bond on-screen — and how that tragic day galvanized the Nobel Peace Prize-winning work that would follow.

The Janes

Year: 2022
Cast: Abby, Judith Arcana, Heather Booth
Genre: Documentary, Historical
Rating: TV-MA
Runtime: 101 minutes
Director: Tia Lessin, Emma Pildes
Trailer: Watch Here

So much of the work done when it comes to Women’s Rights is done in the shadows, by ordinary people taking extraordinary risks to do what’s right. This doc shines a much-needed light on those women by telling a little-known story that feels like the plot of an award-winning drama. The Jane Collective was an underground group of revolutionaries that used code names and safe houses to help women find safe, affordable access to abortion in the early 70s. Their story is fascinating, harrowing, and at times, nerve-wracking but to spoil it anymore would be to rob you of the chance to experience the broad range of emotions inspired by watching women sacrifice everything to help women.

Theranos Founder Elizabeth Holmes Hopes Having Another Baby Will Delay Her Prison Sentence

Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos and now a convicted criminal, is begging the court to delay her prison sentence after the birth of her second child.

Holmes, the turtle-neck-sporting, baritone-voiced CEO who rocketed to fame after she claimed to have invented a machine capable of completing hundreds of different types of blood tests from just a few drops of a patient’s blood, is currently facing an 11-year prison stint after being found guilty of defrauding her company’s investors. She was due to carry out her sentence in April 2023, but her lawyers have now filed a plea to delay the time she must serve behind bars as they go through the appeals process.

And they’re using the disgraced tech genius’ latest pregnancy as a bargaining chip. Holmes, who is in a relationship with hotel heir Billy Evans, recently gave birth to her second child. The couple already have a son together, which Holmes gave birth to during her trial, but the arrival of baby number two has prompted her legal team to ask for a sentencing delay while they fight to overturn her conviction.

Her lawyers are arguing that Holmes is “neither a flight risk nor a danger to the community” because she would never willingly leave her children to escape justice but prosecutors seem concerned that her connection to Evans means she has the means to flee the country if she remains free during the appeal process. According to court filings, Holmes was accused of booking a one-way ticket to Mexico shortly after her conviction, and, should she remain free, she’d be spending her time on Evans’ estate, racking up $13,000 a month in living expenses.

Yeah, we’d find every excuse to avoid exposed toilets and prison food too if we were living that good.

The Weeknd Responded To ‘Rolling Stone’s Report About ‘The Idol’ With A Scene From ‘The Idol’ Dissing ‘Rolling Stone’

Earlier today, Rolling Stone published an article detailing some of the production changes to the anticipated HBO drama The Idol in which members of the crew deride the production as a “sh*tshow” and criticize its new direction, which has been reportedly guided by co-creators Sam Levinson and The Weeknd, who also stars.

Well, The Weeknd clearly wasn’t going to take that criticism lying down and the perfect response ready to go, straight from the show itself. On Twitter, he posted a clip of the show in which his character calls the publication “irrelevant,” with the caption, “@RollingStone did we upset you?” The clip depicts Daniel Levy’s publicist pitching a cover story to his client, Lily-Rose Depp’s Jocelyn, only to be shut down by The Weeknd’s Tedros.

Of course, in the context of the show’s premise, this doesn’t quite scan as the harsh put-down of legacy publications it may seem at first blush. After all, according to HBO’s own publicity for the show, secret cult leader Tedros is a harmful influence on Jocelyn; in Rolling Stone‘s report, his actions toward her are described by the show’s own staff as “sexual torture porn.”

While it seems unlikely that The Weeknd has completely misunderstood the premise of his own show, reports have speculated that the reason for the controversial new direction stemmed from his distaste for the original director, Amy Seimetz’s, treatment of the material, which focused more on Jocelyn’s character than on Tedros.

Seimetz departed the nearly complete show last spring, replaced as director by Levinson, and most of the negative comments were focused on his new treatment, which turned the show from “a dark satire” into “the thing it was satirizing.” This tends to corroborate prior statements made about Levinson’s other HBO show, Euphoria, which has drawn criticism for its explicit content.

Is it possible that this is all some elaborate form of guerilla marketing? Maybe. But considering the show isn’t even completed yet — it doesn’t even have a release date, although HBO is still aiming for sometime in 2023 — it seems we won’t find out for a while… and the show we ultimately get might be completely different than either of the two shows described in Rolling Stone‘s report.

Nelly Is Starting His Own Music Festival And Of Course It’s Named After One Of His Biggest Hits

It seems like every star in music has their own music festival these days. J. Cole’s got Dreamville, Tyler The Creator’s got Flog Gnaw, and Usher has taken over the Lovers And Friends Fest. Well, another contender has thrown their name in the ring, and like Usher, he’s a millennial favorite who’s named his event after one of his biggest hits and stocked its lineup with a bunch of his contemporaries.

Nelly‘s Hot In Herre festival is aimed for June 24 at Toronto’s Downsview Park with a lineup consisting of millennial favorites like Akon, Chingy, Fat Joe, Ja Rule, Keri Hilson, Ne-Yo, Rick Ross, and T.I. Not bad for a one-day festival that isn’t in any of the booked artists’ usual stomping grounds. You’d think it’d be in St. Louis, right?

In the press release, Nelly sort of explains the location. “Toronto is one of my favorite cities to perform in, and the fact that I get to come back and bring all the people that came up with me in the industry means everything,” he says. “We have a lot of surprises in store for you, Toronto, and the Hot in Herre team can’t wait for this summer.”

General admission tickets are already online starting at $170. You can find more information on the official website.

Megan Fox And Machine Gun Kelly Are Apparently Doing ‘Daily Zoom Therapy’ To Try To Save Their Relationship

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly might not be each other’s Bloody Valentines much longer. The romance between the actress and the rapper has quickly spiraled over the last few weeks after rumors surfaced that MGK might have cheated on his fiance — rumors Fox lent credence to when she wiped her social media of all photos of the couple and posted a Beyonce lyric that referenced infidelity in the singer’s own marriage. Fox’s Instagram cull — which included unfollowing everyone save for Eminem, Harry Styles, and Timothee Chalamet — happened over Super Bowl weekend and since then, the couple has been working to get their relationship back on track.

Their latest attempt? Couples therapy. Via Zoom.

After the paparazzi snapped the pair leaving a marriage counseling office, the couple is now taking their therapy appointments at home. A source told Page Six that Fox and MGK are “talking to a couples therapist every day via Zoom,” which is probably as exhausting as it sounds.

“Megan feels that they must give therapy a shot before making any permanent decisions,” the source continued with an insider previously telling the site “They are broken up, but Megan is seeing where they stand. She wants to see what they can salvage.”

Page Six was one of the first to report that infidelity might have led to the split after a source alleged Fox had found “DMs and text messages” which led her to believe MGK had been unfaithful. But once the story broke, Fox was quick to shut down those rumors, posting on Instagram, “There has been no third party interference in this relationship of any kind. That includes, but is not limited to… actual humans, DMs, AI bots, or succubus demons.”

Still, something serious must’ve happened for Fox to remove her engagement ring — especially since MGK has bragged about designing the piece of jewelry in a way that would make it painful for Fox were she to ever remove it — and for both to subject themselves to this digital hail mary.

One day you’re planning your dream goth wedding and drinking each other’s blood, the next you’re spilling your guts to a white woman named Donna via your laptop’s shitty front-facing camera. Love truly is dead.

Dave Filoni Revealed His Biggest ‘Star Wars’ Mentor (Besides George Lucas), And Some Fans Might Find This Controversial

After The Mandalorian proved to be a massive hit with Star Wars fan, Dave Filoni received a mountain of praise for “saving” the franchise from the Sequel Trilogy, which had an extremely rough landing thanks to The Rise of Skywalker. The animation veteran worked directly under George Lucas on The Clone Wars animated series, which Filoni later expanded on with the spinoff series Rebels. The guy knows his stuff, and his love for Star Wars was evident when he made the jump to live-action and joined forces with Jon Favreau on The Mandalorian.

However, Filoni’s path to live-action filmmaking actually started years before The Mandalorian even existed. When Disney bought Star Wars in the early 2010s, new Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy immediately started shipping Filoni off to film sets after George Lucas raved about him. According to Filoni, his most useful experience was on the set of The Last Jedi where Rian Johnson took him under his wing more than any other director. In fact, Filoni still seeks his advice to the day.

Via The Hollywood Reporter:

I visited J.J. [Abrams] on The Force Awakens, I visited Gareth Edwards [on Rogue One] and I visited Rian on [The Last Jedi]. But Rian was the one who shoved me up front, sticking lenses in my hand and really getting me immersed in it. And so I still talk with him to this day. He’s obviously a very talented filmmaker, and I was just very fortunate to be in such an environment where I could sit and listen and learn.

What makes Filoni’s admission fascinating is there’s a vocal contingent of Star Wars fans who think Johnson “ruined” the franchise with The Last Jedi and that Filoni is the only creator who “gets” Star Wars. Turns out, Johnson has been a valuable sounding board for Filoni this whole time as well as being Filoni’s biggest mentor in helping him transition to live-action. It’s certainly a twist that Star Wars fans probably didn’t see coming.

New episodes of The Mandalorian stream Wednesday on Disney+.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Lamented The Fall Of Math Literacy And Accidentally Ended Up Proving Her Own Case

Marjorie Taylor Greene does it again, and by I mean “does it,” she’s complaining about something and proving her opponents’ points. This was the case when she didn’t realize that Chris Stapleton’s mutual “wokeness” ended up being a key reason why he participated in the Super Bowl’s Black National Anthem showcase. More recently, Greene has been making numerical flubs, one that people suspect is more than a typo, given that she had accused Biden of allowing a majority of the world’s population (“billions” rather than the more accurate “millions”) to flood across the U.S.-Mexico border.

The congresswoman from Georgia has now moved onto lamenting the “horrific” loss of math literacy, which she believes all happened during Covid-19 induced school shutdowns. As seen in the below clip, Greene can be seen declaring that “math levels dropped by 7 points, reading levels dropped by 2 points,” and then she began to stumble over her own words: “There is one million five hundred and twenty-four, five hundred and twenty-four and four hundred eighty-one thou– this is over one million.”

She of the “Jewish space lasers,” “gazpacho police,” “Marshall law,” and “peach tree dish” mentions strikes again. As one can imagine, people are having a field day this this hot mess. Nope, no notes:

One Of Megan Thee Stallion’s Most Controversial Projects Was A Clue On ‘Jeopardy!’

Megan Thee Stallion may have been laying low since testifying at Tory Lanez’s assault trial, but when you’re Jeopardy! famous, you’re never far from the public’s memory. One of the Houston rapper’s most controversial projects was a clue on last night’s episode of the popular quiz show, as noted by the reporter who kept the public informed throughout the trial, Meghann Cuniff — aka Meghann Thee Reporter, as fans fondly dubbed her for her coverage.

“I try not to think about work when I watch @Jeopardy,” she explained on Twitter. “I didn’t succeed tonight.” The clue in question referenced Megan’s 2021 project, for which she went to court with her label, 1501 Certified Entertainment. “Her 2021 album Something for Thee Hotties is a compilation of her freestyles and some previously unreleased songs.”

That’s a characterization of the project that 1501 may take issue with. After Megan sued to have a. court declare Something For Thee Hottie an album rather than a mixtape under the terms of her contract, 1501 countersued, arguing that because it was a compilation of freestyles, it didn’t meet the eligibility standard.

The album/tape, which is 45 minutes long only constitutes 29 minutes of “original” material according to 1501, meaning Megan would still have one more album on her contract term after Traumazine, which she wants to count as her final album. The contentious debate continues but at least 1501 founder Carl Crawford has vowed to make it a more agreeable in future by no longer discussing it on social media.

However that turns out, perhaps Meg will find comfort in knowing that even with her taking a break from the spotlight, she’s never far from fans’ thoughts.

Megan Thee Stallion is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
