Musician uses traditional Chinese instrument to create hypnotic cover of ‘Hotel California’

The Eagles’ hit song, “Hotel California,” has been covered countless times over the years by a variety of artists, including the likes of Nancy Sinatra, the Gypsy Kings and that guy at your local karaoke spot.

And while every rendition gives the song a fresh dynamic, one musician with a penchant for mystery has transformed the rock n’ roll staple into something entirely new.

Using a traditional Chinese string instrument called a guzheng, Moyun plays the song focusing mostly on its two guitar solo arrangements, creating a sound that has all the otherworldly beauty of an ancient folk tale.

This is no easy feat, as one commenter noted. “Guzheng is usually tuned to [the] pentatonic scale, which does not have all the notes naturally that are necessary to articulate ‘Hotel California,’” they wrote, saying that Moyun “demonstrated comprehensive technical skills and deep understanding of Guzheng” to be able to bring the song to life.

The theme was only further amplified by Moyun’s costume reflecting the Wei Jin Dynasty—complete with a wide-sleeved robe and hand-woven straw hat covering her face (the artist’s signature style).

Watch:

Though Moyun never reveals her face, she has plenty of other guzheng covers showing off her talent, including from rock classics like AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” to “Numb” by Linkin Park.

Also, anime and video game fans can rejoice. Moyun has brought her next-level skills to widely popular titles like “Demon Slayer” and “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

With every beautiful cover, Moyun proves that some sounds are simply timeless. You can find even more of her on YouTube.

In A Twist Straight Out Of ‘The Americans,’ The Woman Who Accused Biden Of Sexual Assault In 2020 Is Defecting To Russia With The Help Of A Noted Russian Spy

Tara Reade, a former Biden staffer who accused the president of sexually assaulting her in the early 90s, has fled to Russia.

During the build-up to the 2020 presidential election, Reade accused Joe Biden of assaulting her when she was a staff assistant in his Senate office in 1993. Reade’s accusations dominated headlines during the race with various outlets doing their own independent investigations into her claims. Ultimately, Reade’s account contained enough holes that publications like The New York Times seemed to doubt her story was true.

And now, saying she fears for her life after taking aim at President Biden, Reade has defected to Russia with the help of her friend (and infamous Russian spy), Maria Butina.

During a Russian state press conference on Tuesday, Reade sat next to Butina and confirmed she had sought sanctuary under Putin’s regime after feeling unsafe in “Biden’s America.” “I’m still kind of in a daze a bit but I feel very good,” Reade said. “I feel very surrounded by protection and safety. And I just really so appreciate Maria [Butina] and everyone who’s been giving me that at a time when it’s been very difficult to know if I’m safe or not.”

The interview lasted hours and saw Reade talk about everything from America’s poor roadways to the war in Ukraine to her hope that Russians wouldn’t judge her countrymen too harshly for current US sanctions on the country. Over the years, Reade has shared plenty of pro-Russia propaganda online, complimenting Putin’s reign and filling her Youtube channel with diatribes about US censorship of Russian state-owned media. Though Reade didn’t offer any concrete evidence that her safety was in jeopardy because of her allegations against Biden, she claimed that she felt much more secure in Russia and was hoping Putin might grant her citizenship in the future.

“To my Russian brothers and sisters, I’m sorry right now that American elites are choosing to have such an aggressive stance. Just know that most American citizens do want to be friends and hope that we can have unity again,” she said before adding, “I am enjoying my time in Moscow, and I feel very at home.”

Who Got Shot At The End Of The ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ Season 3 Finale?

(WARNING: Spoilers (or maybe not?) for the recent Power Book II: Ghost episode will be found below.)

It’s been a few days now, so most Power Book II: Ghost fans should have been able to see the show’s epic season three finale. Things ended with Monét and Diana getting ambushed by Tasha (surprise!) leaving Monét with multiple gunshot wounds and in critical condition. The shooting was pinned on Tariq which caused him to be ambushed by Cane, Effie, Noma, Diana, and Dru at Noma’s warehouse. What appeared to be a tragic end for Tariq quickly turned into a close call as Brayden made a surprise return to fire back and escape with Tariq. In Brayden’s own words, he’s sure someone was injured from his gunshots, but who?

Who Got Shot At The End Of The Power Book II: Ghost Season 3 Finale?

Well, we don’t know at the moment. During a recent appearance on Michael Rainey Jr. (Tariq) and Gianni Paolo’s (Brayden) The Crew Has It podcast, LaToya Tonodeo (Diana) and Lovell Adams-Grey (Dru), as well as Rainey Jr. and Paolo, both played coy about the victim(s) of Brayden’s gunshots. Paolo joked about hitting both Diana and Dru in the scene, but Adams-Grey clarified that it wasn’t the case. “There’s no evidence or proof of that and I made sure that, even though I wasn’t in my character, I made sure not to come back up and put myself in the line of fire.” Tonodeo added, “We don’t know if he got shot or not.” That answer will most likely come in the season four premiere of Power Book II: Ghost.

You can watch the full episode of The Crew Has It above.

‘Power Book II: Ghost’ season three is available to watch on the STARZ app.

TikTok Has Caused ‘Maid’ To Skyrocket Back Up The Netflix Charts, While Arnold’s ‘FUBAR’ Is Scoring The Dad Clicks

Social media works in unpredictable ways. When the Netflix miniseries Maid, starring Margaret Qualley, debuted in fall of 2021, it turned heads then mostly left the cultural conversation. About a year and a half later, it’s randomly back on the charts. Why? Because of TikTok.

As per Deadline, for the week of May 22 through May 28, Maid nabbed the eighth spot among English-language series on the streamer. It’s all thanks to Maid suddenly and unexpectedly trending on the social media video app, which evidently caused enough users to go check out the show in full.

So congrats to the Margaret Qualley show, in which she plays a young mother who escaped an abusive relationship by getting work as a house cleaner (and which also features her real mom, Andie MacDowell, as her screen mom).

And congrats to FUBAR, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first foray into regular TV work, which nabbed the top spot with some 88.94 million hours viewed. That’s a lot of dads clicking on a show in which the former California governor and Top Gun: Maverick’s Monica Barbaro plays a father and daughter who discover they’re each a secret CIA operative, leading to action-comedy hijinks.

In other Netflix news, the top spot on the film side of the streamer once again went to Jennifer Lopez and The Mother, her new action film in which she plays a deadly assassin trying to save her daughter. It’s the third week in a row that Lopez has dominated the charts.

‘Lost’ Showrunner Damon Lindelof Admits He ‘Failed’ To Create An Inclusive Set After Reports Of Racism And Sexism Behind The Scenes

Back in the early 2000s, Lost was the hit show that capitated audiences and raised so many questions, like why there were polar bears on a tropical island, what was the Dharma Initiative, and how the heck did Sun’s hair grew so fast between seasons when they were only supposed to be gone for 100 days (if that is one of the many theories you subscribed to). But off-screen, there was a variety of bigger problems, some of which have recently come to light.

In an excerpt from Maureen Ryan’s upcoming book Burn It Down: Power, Complicity, and a Call for Change in Hollywood (per Vanity Fair), actor Harold Perrineau, who played Michael on the island, opened up about the microaggressions and racist reactions from some of the show’s writers and producers.

Perrineau recalled a moment in season two when he wanted to adjust the script in order to get some more of his character’s backstory into the episode. “That was the thing that was always tricky. Any time you mention race, everybody gets—their hair gets on fire, and they’re like, “I’m not racist!’” Perrineau said told Ryan. “It’s like, ‘Nope. Because I say that I’m Black doesn’t mean I’m calling you a racist. I am talking to you from my perspective. I’m being really clear that I’m not trying to put my trauma on you, but I am trying to talk to you about what I feel. So can we just do that? Can we just have that conversation?’” The actor recalled having the conversation, only to be fired from the show weeks later. On-set tensions between writers, producers, and actors seemed to only get worse throughout the show’s six-season run.

In another excerpt from Ryan’s book, showrunner Damon Lindelof admitted that he “failed” when it came to providing an inclusive experience, both on camera and off. He said:

My level of fundamental inexperience as a manager and a boss, my role as someone who was supposed to model a climate of creative danger and risk-taking but provide safety and comfort inside of the creative process — I failed in that endeavor. I was like, OK, as long as there are one or two [writers] who don’t look and think exactly like me, then, then I’m OK. I came to learn that was even worse. For those specific individuals, forget about the ethics or the morality involved around that decision, but just talking about the human effect of being the only woman or the only person of color and how you are treated and othered — I was a part of that, a thousand percent.

Lost ended in 2010, and Lindelof says that he has worked hard over the years to become a better screenwriter and person. He has been open about certain regrets when it came to the story and insists that he has personally grown since the series concluded. The way that I conduct myself and the way that I treat other humans who I am responsible for and a manager of is a by-product of all the mistakes that were made,” Lindelof tells Ryan. “I have significantly evolved and grown, and it shouldn’t have had to come at the cost and the trauma of people that I hurt on Lost.”

He continued to confirm the backlash that was from both fans and actors alike: that the show’s main focus was only on the white characters.

Every single actor had expressed some degree of disappointment that they weren’t being used enough. That was kind of part and parcel for an ensemble show, but obviously there was a disproportionate amount of focus on Jack and Kate and Locke and Sawyer — the white characters. Harold was completely and totally right to point that out. It’s one of the things that I’ve had deep and profound regrets about in the two decades since. I do feel that Harold was legitimately and professionally conveying concerns about his character and how significant it was that Michael and Walt — with the exception of Rose — were really the only Black characters on the show.

Despite his regrets, Lindelof has gone on to have a successful career with Watchmen, The Leftovers, and is currently the showrunner on Peacock’s popular sci-fi series Mrs. Davis. He added, “It’s not for me to say what kind of person I am. But I will say this — I would trade every person who told you that I was talented — I would rather they said I was untalented but decent, rather than a talented monster.” At least he didn’t say “smoke monster.”

Burn It Down: Power, Complicity, and a Call for Change in Hollywood hits shelves on June 6th.

When Will ‘You Hurt My Feelings’ Be On Streaming?

In You Hurt My Feelings, Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays Beth, a writer struggling to get her next novel sold. After she overhears her therapist husband admitting that he didn’t think her latest book was good, she then spirals and begins to question not only her relationship with her husband but her own self-worth. So if you are a writer with a chronic case of imposter syndrome, this one’s for you!

You Hurt My Feelings is an A24 production and, as of right now, it doesn’t have a streaming date yet, so you can only see it in theaters. But based on past A24 movies like 2022’s Aftersun, it’s likely that You Hurt My Feelings will be available to buy or rent on demand sometime in late July, about 45 days after its initial release. While there is no confirmed streamer at this time, previous A24 releases have ended up on Apple TV, so hopefully there will be a deal in place. It seems unlikely that it will land on Max or Netflix, but hey, you never know. These things can also change (look at Everything Everywhere All At Once, for example).

The movie is the latest collaboration between Louis-Dreyfus and Nicole Holofcener, who worked together on 2013’s Enough Said, alongside James Gandolfini (his last movie before he passed away in June of that year). Louis-Dreyfus said she had been begging to reunite with Holofcener, and hopes to work together again soon.

“It was hard because we had opportunities to work together, but they didn’t work out schedule-wise because of my schedule and her schedule before,” the actress told UPROXX. “But now, moving forward, I’m very hopeful that we can find a way to do something again and lickety-split. I mean, I’m definitely badgering her about it.” Maybe Holofcener can reunite two of her leading ladies, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jennifer Aniston for a dramedy surrounding late-90s sitcom casts. They have first-hand experience.

‘The Flash’ Director Has No Intentions Of Recasting Ezra Miller If A Sequel Happens

Following a tumultuous 2022 for Ezra Miller, which saw the actor plagued by run-ins with the law and several accusations of assault and abuse, there were significant concerns about The Flash movie making it into theaters.

Since then, The Flash has continued to steadily approach its release date. The conventional wisdom has been that the film will act as a “reset,” paving the way for James Gunn‘s new take on the DC Cinematic Universe and potentially set the stage for Miller to be recast. However, Miller’s fate might not be sealed after all.

In a new interview, The Flash director Andy Muschietti has made it clear that Miller could continue to be play the speedster if the film generates enough box office for a sequel. Via Variety:

“If [a sequel] happens, yes,” Muschietti said about having Miller back as the Flash. “I don’t think there’s anyone that can play that character as well as they did. The other depictions of the character are great, but this particular vision of the character, they just excelled in doing it. And, as you said, the two Barrys — it feels like a character that was made for them.”

Of course, a sequel to The Flash is an “if,” considering DC’s last two films, Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, didn’t exactly light the box office on fire.

In the meantime, Muschietti has also been heaping praise on another key part of The Flash: Michael Keaton. According to the director, the whole film hinged on Keaton returning as Batman, and if he didn’t, well, that was that. There was no backup plan. It was Keaton or bust.

“We were, of course, [filled with] blind confidence that you have when you’re developing a movie and you get excited about ideas like this,” Muschietti told io9. “[It] just pushes you forward. We were all excited believing that having Michael Keaton as Batman would be a great thing in the movie. And also, I think we all believed that he would be excited about it. And he was.”

The Flash speeds into theaters on June 16.

The Linda Lindas Made Scripps National Spelling Bee H-I-S-T-O-R-Y With The First-Ever Live Performance

Conveniences of modern communication technology have made it so most of us don’t really have to expend much mental bandwidth caring about whether it’s spelled “miniscule” or “minuscule.” (It’s the second one, I think.) Once a year, though, the act of spelling words correctly is put center stage with the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The two-night event is set to air live on the ION network, on May 31 and June 1 (here’s info about how to watch it). As Stereogum notes, there was an opening ceremony yesterday (May 29), though, and there, The Linda Lindas (whose members aren’t much older than this year’s crop of spellers) gave a live performance, a first for the bee.

The band posted about it on Instagram, writing, “Playing the @scrippsnationalspellingbee was an honor and a B-L-A-S-T. Good luck to all the spellers.” Their post included photos from the event, including pictures of them on stage and posing with the spellers.

Video of the group’s performance hasn’t surfaced yet, but it will presumably/hopefully air during the event broadcast. The semifinals will air on May 31 at 8 p.m. ET, while the finals are set for June 1 also at 8 p.m. ET. The preliminaries and quarterfinals will also air on ION Plus, so find more information here.

‘The Little Mermaid’ Halle Bailey Went Undercover To Watch Her Movie In The Theater With A Truly Laughable Disguise

Movie stars have always donned disguises to engage in everyday activities like shopping and going to the movies but usually, it only works when they go to extremes like Drake once did to attend a friend’s court appearance (he says even then, people still recognized him). However, The Little Mermaid star Halle Bailey recently got away with a simple-but-effective one herself when she went to a public theater to watch her film debut by herself, even when she stopped to get a video of the massive, wall-spanning video poster touting the film in the lobby.

The “costume” in question consisted of a pair of dark sunglasses and a face mask, which were apparently all it took to obscure her recognizable features, even as she passed by fans taking selfies with the poster screen. It probably helps that her signature locs had been restyled into thicker twists and colored brown as opposed to the vivid red of her character. For what it’s worth, the theater appears to be the AMC at Americana at Brand in Glendale, which isn’t so far from Hollywood that celebrity appearances are very unusual, so if anyone did actually recognize her, they were probably at least a little bit more chill about it.

@hallebailey

can’t believe the little mermaid is the #1 movie in the world you guys!! went to the theatre to go see it last night 🥲😭🥰😇🤍

♬ Part of Your World – From “The Little Mermaid” – Halle

Still, could you imagine looking over and seeing the star of the movie you’re currently watching sitting there eating popcorn out of a novelty bucket? Not only did you get to see a really good movie, but you also now have a story that no one is ever going to believe.

‘The Dropout’ Star Amanda Seyfried Was Asked About Elizabeth Holmes Reporting To Prison To Begin Her 11-Year Sentence

Elizabeth Holmes began her 11-year sentence in prison on Monday. The Theranos founder, who was convicted of fraud, reported to a minimum-security prison camp for women about 95 miles northwest of Houston.

When asked on Good Morning America about Holmes’ imprisonment, actress Amanda Seyfried, who played the deep-voiced tech criminal in Hulu’s The Dropout (and won an Emmy for her performance), replied, “There’s two kids that are hanging in the balance here. As a parent — just as a mom. Life’s not fair, but in a lot of ways it’s fair. It’s fair for her, in particular.”

Holmes was tried for falsely claiming that the company’s blood tests could rapidly scan for and detect a variety of conditions, including diseases, using only a few drops of blood. Additionally, she and [co-founder Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani] will have to pay $452 million in restitution to the investors who were defrauded. During its run, which began in 2003 and at one point saw Holmes valued at nearly $4.5 billion, the company raised nearly $1 billion from investors and had amassed a board of directors featuring presidential cabinet members like Henry Kissinger, James Mattis and George Shultz.

If only Seyfried had portrayed fellow grifter Anna Delvey in Inventing Anna instead of Holmes in The Dropout. She could have showed off her impressive singing voice if there’s another season.
