Ashnikko Battles The Earth’s Demons In The Thrilling New Video For The ‘Weedkiller’ Title Track

Ashnikko has dropped the intense and thrilling new music video for her debut album’s title track, “Weedkiller.” In it, they find themselves battling a robot, known as Weedkiller, as it is intended to “symbolize Earth’s environmental catastrophe and technological advancement,” according to a press release.

Blending elements of dystopian fiction with a fight for a real-life cause, Ashnikko’s heightened nature in both the song and the accompanying video keeps the audience hooked. Plus, it switches between various jump cuts of different scenes to mirror the electronic rock beat.

“This is the song that spawned the whole album,” they shared in a statement. “It’s the climax of the record, the epic fight scene in the wasteland. Swords drawn, roots deep into the ground, I have come here to photosynthesize and eliminate the weedkillers. It is a violent fantastical storytelling set in my realm.”

This new song follows their previous singles “You Make Me Sick” and “Worms,” both of which will be featured on Weedkiller. Following the upcoming album’s June release, Ashnikko will be heading out on a headlining tour this fall, with dates in the US and Europe.

Check out Ashnikko’s new video for “Weedkiller” above.

Weedkiller is out 6/2 via Warner Records. Find more information here.

Hannah Gadsby Opened Up About Why They Chose Not To Discuss Dave Chappelle In Their Latest Netflix Special

During the controversy over Dave Chappelle‘s last special, The Closer, fellow comedian Hannah Gadsby found themselves dragged into the situation thanks to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. In an effort to highlight Netflix’s commitment to providing content from a variety of voices in addition to Chappelle’s, Sarandos named Gadsby as an example, and they did not appreciate the shoutout.

“Hey Ted Sarandos. Just a quick note to let you know that I would prefer if you didn’t drag my name into your mess,” Gadsby wrote on Instagram. “Now I have to deal with even more of the hate and anger that Dave Chappelle’s fans like to unleash on me every time Dave gets 20 million dollars to process his emotionally stunted partial word view.”

After Gadsby called out Sarandos, Chappelle also called out Gadsby in his list of demands for meeting with trans Netflix employees. According to Chappelle, he’d only agree to a sit down if the employees “admit that Hannah Gadsby is not funny,” which led to Chappelle being criticized on Twitter for the dig.

Since then, Gadsby and Netflix reached an agreement, and the comedian is back with their latest comedy set, Something Special. Despite their outspoken criticism of Chappelle, Gadsby doesn’t mention him once in the new material, and they recently explained to Variety why that’s the case:

For a start, it’s boring. There was a time in the tour when it was certainly in front of my mind, and then it very quickly receded. My audience likes me because they don’t like the usual toxic perspective, and to talk about him would be to center his conversation — and I just don’t want that voice to be dictating how I approach my work. I didn’t think he said anything that I was interested in, and that’s what I would have to do in order to talk about Dave Chappelle — I would have to begin with Dave Chappelle, and I don’t want to.

As for whether they would ever sit down with Chappelle, Gadsby doesn’t foresee this in the future.

“Apparently, I have to do it on his terms. So, no. I just think it’s a toxic place. I don’t think he’s open. I just don’t think it’s constructive,” Gadsby said. “There is nuance, and there is intersectionality at play here. But he’s not engaging in that yet, and I’m not gonna make him.

Morgan Wallen’s Voice Problems Are So Bad That He Announced He’s Going On Vocal Rest For Weeks

In April, Morgan Wallen was forced to cancel a Mississippi concert at the last minute. He explained at the time, “After last night’s show, I started losing my voice,so I spent the day resting up, talking to my doctor, and working through my vocal exercises, trying to get better. I really thought I’d be able to take the stage and it kills me to deliver this so close to showtime, but my voice is shot and I am unable to sing.”

There was some backlash to that: He was accused of being too drunk to perform, while one fan demanded an extensive list of refunds from the singer. It sure looks like Wallen wasn’t lying about his voice issues, though: Today, May 9, he shared a video announcing that on the advice of his doctors, he’s going on vocal rest for six weeks, meaning that some of his upcoming concerts and appearances will be rescheduled or canceled.

Find a transcript of the video below.

“What’s going on, y’all? I’m just going to go ahead and get straight to it. I got some bad news from my doctors at the Vanderbilt Voice Center yesterday. After taking ten days of vocal rest, I performed three shows last weekend in Florida, and by the third one, I felt terrible. So I went in and got scoped yesterday, and they told me that I re-injured my vocal cords and that I have vocal fold trauma.

Their advice is that I go on vocal rest for six weeks, so that’s what I’m going to do. They want me not to talk at all, but they said if I need to, it’s OK to for something like this. I also tore my LAT while we were in Australia; I’ve been trying to work through that quietly, but this time off is going to help me get that back right as well.

We are working on rescheduling all the dates during this time frame. We’ve almost got that done, but some of them are pending, so I’ll keep you updated. I won’t be able to make these festivals that I have during this time frame, but we are going to make those right next year.

I won’t be able to do the ACM [Academy Of Country Music] Awards or Lifting Lives event, but y’all make sure you still go: it’s for a great cause.

They told me that if I do this the right way, I’ll get back to 100 percent, and they also said that if I don’t listen and I keep singing, then I’ll permanently damage my voice. So for the longevity of my career, this is just a choice I had to make. I hate it. But I love you guys, and I appreciate all the support that you always give me. I’ll see you soon and I’ll be back better than ever. God bless you.”

Ted Cruz’s Thermostat Complaint Isn’t Earning Him Any New Fans And Has Inspired A New Crop Of Cancun Quips

Ted Cruz will never live down his choice to jet to sun-soaked Cancun in 2021 amid a fatal ice storm in Texas. He also left his dog at home, which added to the drama a few years ago, and in the aftermath, every time Ted gets weaselly with his own attempt to make light of the situation, no one will let him live down how he left his freezing constituents behind to enjoy the beach.

So, nearly every time Ted mentions something even semi-related, a flurry of Cancun reminders greet him, and his latest climate-related declaration is no exception. Here, Ted posted a photo of a thermostat as tweeted by Eli Higgins, a reporter who is based in Wichita, Kansas. Higgins noted the government recommendation to set thermostats at 82 and 85, during the nighttime and while out of the home, respectively. Ted’s response? “[H]ell no.”

Naturally, the Cancun quips were ready and waiting for Ted. As well, people had plenty of reminders that the Texas power grid cannot handle extreme temperatures of any type, whether that’s summer or winter. It doesn’t appear that ERCOT is ever going to have an easy time unless Texas decides, at some point, to not be isolated from the rest of the U.S. when it comes to the power grid. So, even though Ted is referencing reporting from Kansas, Texas could stand to take some tips from the recommendation.

Meanwhile, Cancun is sitting at 87 degrees as we speak. Just in case Ted was wondering.

Indie music has grown to include so much. It’s not just music that is released on independent labels but speaks to an aesthetic that deviates from the norm and follows its own weirdo heart. It can come in the form of rock music, pop, or folk. In a sense, it says as much about the people that are drawn to it as it does about the people that make it.

Every week, Uproxx is rounding up the best new indie music from the past seven days. This week we got new music from Strange Ranger, Claud, Grian Chatten, Panchiko, and more.

Grian Chatten — “Fairlies”

The Fontaines DC frontman Grian Chatten is stepping out on his own for this new song “Fairlies.” His vocals are disarming and intimate, and the ambiance is jovial: “No fair / They can talk to me / I can live alone / I can live alone / Happy,” he sings. Fans of his band are sure to like it, though it’s quite a bit different.

Bush Tetras — “Things I Put Together”

Bush Tetras are a riot, most known for their 1983 feminist classic “Too Many Creeps.” Their first album in eleven years is on its way, titled They Live In My Head, and the single “Things I Put Together” is a compelling first taste. The guitars are playful and sharp, and the vocals are as strong as ever with an infectious melody.

Greg Mendez — Greg Mendez

Greg Mendez’s new album opens with a church organ. His voice comes in with a Conor Oberst-like quiver over an acoustic guitar, uttering lines of anguish: “I don’t mind if you stay tonight / It’s just another promise you never meant.” There’s a weightlessness with the pain, especially on the record’s highlight “Sweetie.” Over more funeral-esque organs, he intones, “I won’t love again after you.” His words hold so much immediacy that there’s a freeing aspect to it. Greg Mendez is a religious experience.

Cusp — You Can Do It All

Cusp’s 2021 EP Spill was a treat. You Can Do It All watches the band going all in, showcasing exactly what they’ve got. The first lines of the album are instantly impactful: “You said you had a dream / Where I couldn’t speak,” Jen Bender mumbles. It spills satisfyingly into the following, upbeat track “Dead Things Talk,” which also ruminates on the topic of slumber: “I could sleep / For a year and wake up tired from a dream.” The blown-out “Limited Edition” is the record’s centerpiece, exploding with Ovlov-like guitars that envelope the listener into its warm embrace.

Drain — Living Proof

Drain are known for unrelenting, cutthroat hardcore tinged with metal. Living Proof is the latest of their mischief and its unabashedly fun and angry throughout, speckled with pissed-off growls and tumultuous instrumentation. At 25 minutes, it’s a jam-packed experience with plenty of breakdowns.

Gouge Away — “Idealized”

It’s been five years since Florida’s Gouge Away unveiled their last album Burnt Sugar, a hardcore masterpiece. Their new ripper “Idealized” marks a brazen comeback, unfurling with their usual brooding tension that builds into an off-kilter melody. The hook is shouted infectiously: “No apology,” and it gets better every time.

Claud — “Every F*cking Time”

From their just-announced new album Supermodels, “Every F*cking Time” is a touching preview of what’s to come. The ballad explores an unsatisfactory relationship, serving as a place for Claud to reckon with disappointments: “By the way I’m playing next Friday / I want you there but I know you’ll miss the train / And you’ll show up at the last song / But tell me you were there all along,” they sing.

Strange Ranger — “She’s On Fire”

Strange Ranger vocalist and guitarist Isaac Eiger said in a statement that “music is the steadying hand I lean on when looking for meaning. It provides a spiritualism that feels absent from much of life and I want to be as close to that feeling as possible.” “She’s On Fire” is a dive into that meaning and spirituality; the sprawling song has a transcendent texture with entrancing vocals and a tame rhythm.

Clearbody — “New Essence”

Charlotte, North Carolina’s Clearbody impressed many with their debut One More Day. “New Essence” is a more vibrant take on their shoegaze sound, moving swiftly with glimmering guitars and breezy instrumentation reminiscent of Drop Nineteens. The track comes from their forthcoming EP Bend Into A Blur.

Panchiko — Failed At Math(s)

To say Panchiko’s new record Failed At Math(s) is highly anticipated is an understatement. It’s their first album in over two decades. The band is known for having a cult-following online after their LP D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L caught traction on the Internet forums well after the group broke up. The idiosyncrasy that they’re cherished for is retained on Failed At Math(s), twinkling and glitching with their distinct personality.

The NBA Announced The 2022-23 All-Defensive Teams

With individual awards all handed out, the league took the first week of May to announce its All-League honors, starting with All-Rookie teams on Monday and continuing with the All-Defensive squads on Tuesday.

The first-team is headlined by the three DPOY finalists, with Jaren Jackson Jr., Brook Lopez, and Evan Mobley making up the frontcourt, while Jrue Holiday and Alex Caruso took the backcourt spots.

The second-team features Bam Adebayo, Draymond Green, Dillon Brooks, OG Anunoby, and Derrick White.

The voting breakdown was pretty clean between the first and second teams, with White and Caruso being the closest race for first-team, but Caruso still getting the nod by a full 26 voting points — and, notably, there was not a single unanimous selection.

NBA

As far as the “others receiving votes,” last year’s DPOY Marcus Smart was the first left off the list among guards, falling 19 votes shy of Dillon Brooks for the final second-team guard spot. Giannis Antetokoumpo out-pointed Brooks and Adebayo, but was 21 points shy of OG Anunoby for the last forward spot, with Nic Claxton being the first off the list among centers.

There are some odd stray votes out there, but none of the selections themselves are particularly egregious. Giannis’ exclusion from either team is probably the biggest “snub” but given how they break things out positionally, it’s not a massive shock.

Mike Lindell Has Found Himself In A Multi-Million Dollar ‘Fiasco’ Over His ‘Prove Mike Wrong’ Contest

In 2021, Mike Lindell, lord of the pillows, insisted that he had data proving China interfered in the 2020 election. He offered $5 million to anyone who could debunk his claims. The contest’s name: “Prove Mike Wrong.” Well, in an Ass Dan-“I’m gonna live forever”-twist (RIP Ass Dan), someone did just that, but Lindell is refusing to pay them in what he’s calling a “$5 million fiasco.”

“Everyone heard about the $5 million fiasco,” Lindell fumed on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast this week according to Raw Story, “that challenged, or challenging the evidence, or some of the evidence that I have. And we’re taking that. We talked about it with the lawyers yesterday. We’re taking that to court. So that’s the report on that.”

Mike was proven wrong by 63-year-old Robert Zeidman, a computer forensics expert from Nevada, who a private arbitration panel ruled deserves the money. “Mr. Zeidman performed under the contract,” the panel wrote in its decision. “He proved the data Lindell LLC provided, and represented reflected information from the November 2020 election, unequivocally did not reflect November 2020 election data. Failure to pay Mr. Zeidman the $5 million prized was a breach of the contract, entitling him to recover.”

It’s a good thing Lindell has the money and doesn’t continue to spend an astronomical amount of dough on a dumb cause… oh wait.

Even Cardi B’s Daughter Kulture Couldn’t Help Being Starstruck By ‘The Little Mermaid’ Halle Bailey

Cardi B’s daughter Kulture may have famous parents and be a borderline celebrity in her own right, but that didn’t stop her from being a little starstruck by her fellow aquatic actress Halle Bailey at the Los Angeles premiere of The Little Mermaid. Bailey, as you’re probably aware, plays the titular role in the live-action remake of the Disney animated classic, and although she took some flak from internet bigots who couldn’t handle seeing locs on a mermaid, it’s clear from children’s reactions to her that she’s the perfect person to portray the underwater princess in the new remake.

It’s no surprise Kulture had stars in her eyes when she met the young singer; Kulture’s fourth birthday party last year was mermaid-themed, so it seems pretty likely the original gets plenty of burn at the Cephus household.

And Kulture certainly knows a thing or two about portraying a fish-tailed fan-favorite character, thanks to her appearance alongside her mom in Baby Shark’s Big Show. She’s set to reprise her role in Baby Shark’s Big Movie as well, although this time it seems she’ll be a little more aware of what’s going on.

She won’t be the only one singing the new Ariel’s praises; early reactions to The Little Mermaid have been calling it Disney’s best live-action remake yet, even with the terrifying redesigns of Flounder and Sebastian.

Taylor Swift’s Nashville ‘Eras Tour’ Show Was Rainy And Delayed By Hours, But She’s Grateful For It And Had ‘So Much Fun’

Taylor Swift posted some of her thoughts about the final night of her recent Nashville shows, which was delayed due to lightning and an intense rain storm. Because of this, the crowd had been kept inside the stadium as part of a shelter-in-place order. Still, Swift didn’t cancel and instead took the stage — playing until around 1 a.m. in the weather, once it was deemed safe to do so.

While the openers might not have gone on, Swift also treated the crowd to a guest appearance from Aaron Dessner, as the two performed the Midnights track “Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve” during the surprise section.

“WELL,” Swift wrote on social media. “We had our first rain show of The Eras Tour. And it was SO MUCH FUN. The dancers, band, crowd and I all pretty much turned into little kids joyfully jumping in puddles all night. I wanted to thank the crowd again for waiting for the weather to clear. And my amazing crew for keeping the stage, lighting and equipment all dry and working so we could play. That was a late, great night I won’t forget.”

In typical Swiftie fashion, many are starting to speculate based off her repeated love for capitalizing four letter words that start with “W.” See some additional Swift posts as evidence, along with some possible fan theories — proving that her post-rainy show might have some hidden clues… Maybe for the newly announced Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)?
