One Chris Pratt Movie Will Replace Another Chris Pratt Movie At The Top Of The Box Office

It’s a good weekend to be Chris Pratt. I mean, most weekends are probably good if you have the phone numbers for both the Terminator and Aubrey Plaza, but this weekend will be especially good. The former Parks and Recreation star will have the two biggest movies in the country: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

James Gunn’s third and final Guardians movie is expected to make $120 million during its debut weekend at the box office, which is more than the first Guardians ($94 million) but less than Vol. 2 ($146 million). The latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will also snap the four-week box office reign of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, starring Pratt as the voice of Mario.

At the international box office, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to add $130 million to $140 million from all markets including China, which is estimated to account for a disappointing $15 million to $20 million of that total. China, once a huge territory for Marvel, hasn’t been friendly toward any Hollywood movies (except Avatar: The Way of Water) in recent years.

In a few weeks, when the chatter around both movies has decreased, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 should trade Rocket Raccoon to The Super Mario Bros. Movie for Tanooki Mario. That should add at least another $20 million to their respective box office totals.

Aubrey Plaza Did Not Mince Words When Asked About Jared Leto’s Cat Costume At The Met Gala

Jared Leto, who famously commits to method acting to the point where he allegedly takes excruciatingly long pee breaks on a movie set, did not fully commit at the Met Gala. That is to say, he dressed up as Choupette (cat of Karl Lagerfeld) to honor the late Lagerfeld on his theme night, but that’s not exactly where the trouble lies. Doja Cat did the same thing, and she went all in for the evening, but Leto surprisingly wavered.

That is to say, Leto reached a point where he took the cat head off. At that point, he was a furry with a Leto head on the toothpaste-looking carpet, which looked much sillier than the full-on cat costume next to fancy ballgowns. Well, Variety‘s Marc Malkin noticed Leto’s costume (because obviously) and brought up the subject to the fabulous Aubrey Plaza (who was wearing “Stella McCartney, who else?”), and here’s how that exchange went. (Spoiler alert: A disappointed Aubrey Plaza awaits):

Malkin: “Did you see Jared Leto came as the cat?”

Plaza: “You know what? He took that head off way too soon.”

Malkin: “Why do you think he should have kept it on longer?”

Plaza: “Because he should have kept it on longer… that’s what Karl would have done!”

She’s as discomfort-inducing as always, and she loves it. Here’s the video:

Maybe next time, Leto will stick to the role. For Karl!

Guy buys chair on Facebook Marketplace for $50 and finds out it could be worth $50,000

Let’s be real—buying secondhand allows us to save a few bucks, which is great. But the real thrill is the possibility of snagging that ultra-rare, one-of-a-kind item that’s worth a bajillion times more than we originally paid for it. Yes, that kind of shopping is a lottery unto itself. But man, what a jackpot, should you win.

And of course, it’s not a totally far-fetched fantasy. Costly things get thrown out or donated all the time, ready to be procured at the nearby thrift store, garage sale…

…or, in this case, Facebook Marketplace.

In February 2023, Los Angeles-based designer and container creator Justin Miller posted a TikTok sharing a listing he found for a dark tan leather wingback chair going for $50.

Miller immediately felt the piece was “unique” and dove into some online research. The brand, he discovered, was Frits Henningsen, with the design dating back to the 1930s. Miller would later discover (thanks to a helpful commenter) that the same chair showed up during Kirsten Dunst’s hour tour for Architectural Digest, where the actress mentioned that only 50 of the chairs were ever made.

@miztermiller Can’t believe I just found this amazing designer chair on Facebook Marketplace for $50! Could be worth $100,000 🙃 #homedecor #interiordesign #diy #homerenovation #thrifted #vintage #thrifthaul #facebookmarketplace #antiques ♬ love nwantinti (ah ah ah) – CKay

With all that info, the prices for the chair were expectedly “insane,” ranging from $9,634 to $60,000, to even a whopping $223,943 for a pair of the exact same chair in the listing—meaning that, theoretically, one chair would be worth around $100,000. Yowza.

Of course, with a few scratches in the leather, Miller knew he wouldn’t be getting anywhere near $100,000. But still, he seemed in for a pretty penny. So he of course bought the chair and has documented the ongoing journey in subsequent TikToks.

@miztermiller Replying to @minnymau5 UPDATE on the $100k chair, and answering some questions! #homedecor #interiordesign #diy #homerenovation #thrifted #vintage #thrifthaul #facebookmarketplace #antiques #sothebys ♬ love nwantinti (ah ah ah) – CKay

As he explained in an interview with Insider, the seller, located in Beverly Hills, gave Miller a quick heads up that the chair was potentially worth a lot of money. They had been tasked with selling a family friend’s unwanted items in exchange for a percentage of the profits and had set up a yard sale, only to have to quickly pack everything up again after finding out that the city didn’t allow them. At that point, the only goal really was to sell everything as quickly as possible.

“She knew, she just wanted to get rid of it,” he said.

After procuring the chair, Miller submitted it to auction houses, and, according to Sotheby’s, it is estimated at…drumroll please…between $30,000-$50,000.

Best $50 ever spent.

@miztermiller Replying to @scramli3 Such a great find, and I love that you’ve been along for the journey. More to come! #homedecor #interiordesign #diy #homerenovation #thrifted #vintage #sothebys #antiques ♬ love nwantinti (ah ah ah) – CKay

Miller is still waiting to get the final price for his chair, but he is undoubtedly patting himself on the back for trusting his gut. And he’s sure to post how much it ultimately sold for on his TikTok, which you can find here.

Meanwhile, if you need me, I’ll be perusing Facebook Marketplace.

AOC Joined Forces With A Surprising GOP Ally To Ban Congresspeople From Owning Stock

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is pushing a new bill that will severely restrict members of Congress from owning and/or trading stocks while in office. AOC’s stance on this issue isn’t surprising given her socialist-leanings and anti-establishment positions that want Congress to work for the American people and not its wealthy members. What is surprising is the bill’s co-sponsor: controversial Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz.

After his headline-grabbing antics during the contentious Speaker of the House vote, Gaetz has engaged in a rare reach across the aisle to join forces with AOC and pass H.R. 3003, which would not only put severe limitations on members of Congress, but also on their spouses and dependents.

Via The New York Post:

“When Members have access to classified information, we should not be trading in the stock market on it,” said Ocasio-Cortez. “It’s really that simple.”

“Members of Congress are spending their time trading futures instead of securing the future of our fellow Americans,” Gaetz said. “We cannot allow the Swamp to prioritize investing in stocks over investing in our country.”

Moderate Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) and progressive Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) are also co-sponsoring the bill, and Fitzpatrick made it a point to highlight the unusual collaboration.

“The fact that Members of the Progressive Caucus, the Freedom Caucus, and the Bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, reflecting the entirety of the political spectrum, can find common ground on key issues like this should send a powerful message to America,” Fitzpatrick said.

Calm Is Getting Your Favorite Musicians To Help Put You To Sleep

The relationship between a fan and an artist is always evolving. Before social media and the internet, that relationship was mostly made up of live performances and interviews in magazines or on the radio. But now in the digital world there are endless avenues to connect with your favorite musicians. While the relationship between fans and artists has always been special, there is something more personal about fan interactions than ever before, and that is due in large part to the intimate nature of today’s content. The Calm app has only elevated this idea. Initially known for its sleep and meditation content, Calm has more recently started collaborating with artists, creating a new way for fans to experience their favorite musicians.

In many ways, an interaction with your favorite musician on social media elicits a similar feeling to making eye contact at a concert. Fans just want to feel like the artist knows and sees only them in a crowd of thousands of other people and posts. The intimate nature of Calm’s content fosters that same feeling. Drifting off to sleep while listening to Harry Styles’ Sleep Story, “Dream With Me,” feels like a very singular and unique experience, regardless of how many others have or will listen to it. Perhaps a bit differently than other fan experiences, Calm’s content is specifically made with mental health in mind. The addition of music has only supported that. Calm’s Chief Content Officer, Greg Justice, explains that they’re, “on a mission at Calm to support everyone on every step of their mental health journey, and we’re mindful of the transformative effect music often has on one’s mood and mindset. Thus, it made perfect sense to complement our existing library of meditations and Sleep Stories with music to help users focus, fall asleep, or simply relax.”

While this is something that users of Calm have benefited from, Justice says that, “many musicians often have these same goals in mind. The addition of music to Calm has afforded us the unique opportunity to align with artists on authentic collaborations across a range of genres and formats, whether that be an ambient album with Moby – our first-ever release in March of 2019 – or, more recently, an ASMR-themed Sleep Story with Camila Cabello.”

Calm’s most recent collaboration with Cabello falls directly in line with that sentiment as her ASMR-themed Sleep Story “The Beauty Of Winding Down,” was inspired by her love for it. ASMR, or autonomous sensory meridian response, is meant to trigger a tingling sensation in your body that sparks relaxation or sleepiness, and that is the intended goal with Cabello’s Sleep Story. “While we’ve dabbled with ASMR in the past, this is the first time we’ve partnered with an artist on such an experience,” Justice says. “Camila Cabello often uses ASMR as a tool to fall asleep, so it was natural to collaborate with her on *whisper this next part* her very own…ASMR…Sleep Story…’The Beauty of Winding Down.’” For fans of Cabello not only do they now have a new way of connecting with her, but also a tool to help them calm down and achieve deep rest.

I know when I was a teenager I would often fall asleep listening to music, though One Direction’s song “Moments” wasn’t necessarily created for that purpose, as it would play the next, more upbeat song as soon as it was over. Calm’s Sleep Remix series — created in collaboration with Universal Music Group — ensures that won’t happen. The meditation and sleep company partnered with UMG during the pandemic for a first-of-its-kind reimagining of well-known pop songs for bedtime. The series includes Kacey Musgraves’ “Golden Hour,” Ariana Grande’s “breathin,” and Post Malone’s “Circles” among many others. “Rather than the standard radio edit, the series includes hour-long, dreamlike compositions designed to help listeners fall and stay asleep,” explains Justice. This collaboration provides fans with a new take on some of their favorite songs, that also just so happen to be great to listen to as you fall asleep.

Calm’s Sleep Story collaborations are another subset of their sleep content that has both helped the app garner a new audience, and provided fans with an entry point into bettering their mental health and sleep. “For example, many fans of Harry Styles shared that his Calm Sleep Story served as the perfect entry into our wider set of mental health solutions that genuinely benefited their wellbeing,” Justice says. “Prior to our partnership in 2020, Harry had opened up about his personal experience seeking therapy – sharing the positive impact it had on his own well-being as well as encouraging his fans to seek mental health practices of their own.” So when it came time to launch his Sleep Story, “Dream With Me,” the response from fans was so overwhelming that the app crashed for several hours.

Similarly Rosé from BLACKPINK collaborated on a Sleep Story with Calm that had major success. Rosé has also “helped destigmatize the mental health conversation by opening up about her own mental health journey and daily commitment to reconnect with herself through rest and relaxation,” Justice says. “Last December, we released ‘Grounded with Rosé,’ a 30-minute Sleep Story that includes breathing exercises and meditative guidance from Rosé intended to help superfans and everyday listeners alike drift off to dreamland.” Fans are receptive to these collaborations because of how honest the artists are willing to be.

That notion seems to ring true across all of their collaborations. One in particular is Kehlani’s soundscape that was specifically created for people with tinnitus – a condition in which people experience ringing or other sounds in one or both ears, that have no external source. Kehlani found the recommended treatment of ambient noise to be helpful and thus collaborated with Calm on curating, “Ocean Waves For Tinnitus,” a soundscape specifically designed to help others with the condition. While Calm’s soundscapes help Kehlani with her tinnitus, they prove to be beneficial in other areas of her life, as well. “Soundscapes especially help me with my tinnitus, but also helps me when I need to soothe my child, when she needs to go to sleep, when I need to cool the energy down of the house, when I need to take a drive,” says Kehlani. From a fan’s perspective though Kehlani’s curated soundscape is a way to connect with her on a deeper level, regardless of whether or not they have the same condition.

In a sense, consuming Calm’s content is an immersive experience. In an online or print interview, fans would only be able to read about Kehlani’s tinnitus, but with Calm, not only can you read about it in their interview with her, but you can then have a sonic experience that helps you to understand what she goes through while also achieving a level of mindfulness apart from that. Fans are able to connect with her while also taking care of their own mental health.

At the core of Calm is the mission to support people in bettering their mental health through achieving restful meditation and sleep. Through their artist collaborations, they’ve been able to both attract a new audience within different fandoms, and also open up the conversation surrounding mental health through a vast catalog. Calm sleep expert, Dr. Shelby Harris, says, “There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. If you find something that helps improve your sleep and doesn’t negatively impact any sleep quality or quantity, then go for it.” So whether you’re Camila Cabello’s biggest fan or you just need some help getting more rest, Calm’s artist collaborations will both help you connect with your favorite artist in a more personal way, while also supporting your mental health. Seems like a win-win.

Beyond National Parks: Our Guide To Getting Outside In Sedona, Arizona

It’s no secret that National Parks are having a moment – from your Instagram feed to every form of National Park-themed merchandise, to countless travel guides (hello, hi it’s me) – our National Park system is more buzzed about than ever. With visitation soaring at many of the most popular Western parks, you might be surprised that one of the vistas you’ve likely seen on your social feed in the last 30 minutes isn’t actually a National Park at all.

Still, it’s one of the most impressive natural wonders in the United States – Sedona, Arizona. While there are two state parks within the Sedona area – Slide Rock State Park and Red Rock State Park – many visitors are surprised that the nearly immeasurable expanse of incredible red rocks surrounding the artsy town isn’t a National Park or National Monument.

Sedona Golden Hour
Emily Hart

Just over two hours from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon to the North and Phoenix to the South, Sedona is the perfect stopover on a wider Arizona road trip – or an incredible destination unto itself. After visiting a half dozen times during several seasons, I have lots of recommendations. These are my recent favorites to maximize wellness and outdoor adventure.

PART I — WHERE TO EXPLORE:

There is something for everyone in Sedona, from the requisite Pink Jeep Tours, helicopter rides, vortex, and wine tours. But the crown jewel is, of course, the hiking. With more than 200 trails over 400 miles in the Sedona area, there is a trail for everyone. Here are some of my favorites.

DEVIL’S BRIDGE

Devils Bridge Sedona
Emily Hart

Devil’s Bridge is probably the most well-known hike in Sedona – at least on Instagram. The largest sandstone arch in the area, accessible via a moderate hike that’s just 1.8 miles roundtrip (if parking at the trailhead with a 4×4 high-clearance vehicle) or 3.9-5.8 miles via the parking area for other passenger cars. It’s a classic trek with a great payoff. Full disclosure, I don’t have the classic bridge photo because the wait to take the photos was longer than the hike itself when I visited – but I honestly didn’t mind, the entire hike is gorgeous and great for most ability levels.

Distance: 3.9 miles out and back

Difficulty: Moderate

BELL ROCK/LITTLE HORSE

Little Horse
Emily Hart

There are many trails around Bell Rock in Sedona – most of which can be extremely crowded and difficult to find parking at. For this reason, I started hiking Little Horse – a somewhat less crowded trail near Bell Rock – on a visit a few years ago. The moderate trail has gorgeous scenery the entire way, moderate inclines, and plenty of interesting vegetation.

Distance: 4.3 miles out and back

Difficulty: Moderate

YAVAPAI VISTA

Yavapai Vista
Emily Hart

Somewhere between a hike and a viewpoint lies Yavapai Vista. Just 0.5 miles from the parking lot brings you to a vista which is what red rock dreams are made of. I headed up for sunset with a can of wine on my last trip and found people ecstatic dancing, traditional tourist-ing, and getting married (really) – but what they all had in common was a look of awe while selfie-ing.

I found a spot just beyond the ecstatic dance party to sit alone for the entirety of sundown and beyond. The view was almost unbelievable as the sky put on a show.

Distance: 0.5 miles out and back

Difficulty: Easy

SECRET SLICK ROCK

Secret Slick Rock
Emily Hart

Secret Slick Rock Trail is, again, at the intersection of a hike and a viewpoint – but it is by far my favorite spot in Sedona to recommend (despite also not actually wanting to recommend it so I can continue to have it to myself). With the most incredible backdrop of Cathedral Rock and lots of space to spread out and watch the sunset (when I visited I had the whole place to myself), this is – to me – the quintessential Sedona viewpoint.

Distance: 0.7 miles out and back

Difficulty: Easy

Map here.

FAY CANYON

Fay Canyon
Emily Hart

Fay Canyon is a great alternative to the (much) more crowded nearby Boynton Canyon. At just 2.3 miles out and back, the trail is suitable for most people and provides gorgeous views. For the more intrepid, there is a natural arch that can be hiked to from the trail for some truly spectacular views. Parking is easy (a huge plus for Sedona) and the payoff is almost immediate.

Distance: 2.3 miles out and back

Difficulty: Moderate

ALSO CONSIDER:

There are tons of hikes in Sedona, from easy to extremely difficult. Some others to consider – that you may want to take a shuttle to – are Cathedral Rock, Boynton Canyon and The Subway Cave, and Seven Sacred Pools.

WHERE TO STAY:

THE WILDE RESORT AND SPA

The Wilde Resort and Spa
Emily Hart

I loved staying at The Wilde Resort and Spa on my last visit to Sedona – it is now by far my top choice and recommendation for not just lodging, but wellness in the city. The newly reimagined property is incredibly conveniently located, and yet feels miles away with incredible views of Thunder Mountain, beautiful landscaping and pool area, hot tubs, labyrinth, fire pits, a rooftop deck, and an on-site spa.

The Wilde Resort and Spa
Emily Hart

I stayed in a Grove room that had a large walk-out patio with comfortable chairs and views of Thunder Mountain. I loved watching the sunrise and sunset and enjoying some wine after a long day in the sun hiking. The bathroom was spacious with a large shower and soaking tub – perfect for recharging after the day.

THE WILDE SPA
Emily Hart

While I didn’t get a chance to utilize the Wild Haven Spa on-site, I overheard my fellow guests lounging by the pool saying that their spa treatments were some of the best they had ever had. Next time, I’ll make sure to add a treatment or two to my trip.

The Wilde Resort
Emily Hart

I loved that The Wilde offered daily morning meditation and yoga classes (with a view, of course) and ample opportunities for reflection. At check-in, I found a crystal on my pillow with directions for completing my own walking meditation – something I saw many guests delight in throughout my stay.

WHERE TO EAT WITH A VIEW:

My criteria for dining in Sedona are the same as everything else in Sedona – does it have a nice view? And luckily, most places do. Here were some of my favorites:

THE VAULT UPTOWN

The Vault Sedona
Emily Hart

I stopped for lunch at The Vault Uptown Bar and Grill without many expectations beyond, obviously, a nice view to enjoy. But I was blown away by my simple choices: an avocado chicken salad sandwich, fries, and a drink. I loved the “Copperhead” cocktail, made with grapefruit vodka, ginger beer, and lemon. As a storm started to roll in over the remarkable red rocks I was as impressed with the view as I was with my lunch, the chicken salad perfectly prepared with cranberries and a chipotle ranch sauce on a brioche bun.

RASCAL

Rascal Sedona
Emily Hart

Defining itself as a “Modern Diner”, Rascal is a unique dining experience from the moment you walk in. Situated in The Wilde Resort and Spa, the restaurant itself is awash in colors, patterns, and textures that make for a bright and fun meal. I enjoyed breakfast and dinner at Rascal and devoured both almost immediately. For breakfast, I had chilaquiles that was just spicy enough and filling for my day of activity. For dinner, I enjoyed a BLT with added avocado that renewed my love for the simple, yet elegant dish. The service at both sittings was impeccable and the crowd was fun. It is a must-stop.

HIDEAWAY HOUSE

Hideaway House
Emily Hart

Despite being in the middle of town, Hideaway House is sort of just like its name – a little hidden. Tucked back in a lot next to a liquor store, it is unassuming. Until you go inside and see the view, that is. With a large menu and friendly service, Hideaway House was a great choice for a late lunch. I enjoyed a lavender lemonade and chicken club sandwich while watching the light bounce off the incredible rock formations all around me.

PUMP HOUSE STATION

Pump House Sedona
Emily Hart

Pump House Station came highly recommended by locals, and I have to say it now will be by me as well. Tucked into the North side of the charming and historic Tlaquepaque Arts and Shopping Village, the rustic-chic spot serves up some incredible dishes and drinks. I devoured a roast beef sandwich with red onion, beer mustard, brie, tomato, chicory lettuce, and horseradish mayo on a pretzel bun with a light and tasty cauliflower potato salad on the side. The vibe was fun and casual with incredible views out back.

WHERE TO DRINK:

VINEYARDS AND WINERIES

There are several great wineries and vineyards in the greater Sedona area. So many that there are a plethora of wine-tasting tours visitors can take while visiting. I have visited several wineries in the area – for research purposes only, of course – and these three are my picks:

WINERY 1912

Winery 1912
Emily Hart

Winery 1912 is the only winery within city limits that I have visited. It’s easy to walk to and has a great view from the tasting room. Pouring Spanish varietals grown in Wilcox Arizona – at the state’s largest and most diverse vineyard – I loved sitting back with a glass, a cheese board, a book, and a view after a long morning hike.

OAK CREEK VINEYARDS AND WINERY

Oak Creek Vineyards
Emily Hart

Oak Creek Vineyards is slightly out of town in Cornville – about 15 miles from downtown. The atmosphere is lovely with lots of sitting areas outside with shade and vineyard views. I tried the flight of white wines that included five refreshing pours. The Viognier was a favorite.

ALCANTARA VINEYARDS AND WINERY

Alcantara Vineyards
Emily Hart

Slightly further from Sedona in Camp Verde lies Alcantara Vineyards and Winery. At about 25 miles outside of town it’s a nice afternoon stop on your way driving from Pheonix to Sedona. The grounds are gorgeous at this family-owned and operated vineyard that serves 17 different varietals from its over 20,000 vines. Situated near the Verde River, the winery also offers kayaking and tubing, e-bike, jeep, and horseback tours of the vineyard.

BTS’ Suga Took Some Shots And Discussed His Love For Basketball During His First Solo Late-Night Talk

Last night (May 1), Suga appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote both his recently-released album as Agust D, titled D-Day, and the connecting Disney+ documentary, Road To D-Day. It marked the singer’s first late-night appearance without his BTS bandmates according to Billboard.

During the interview, he spoke to Fallon about past aspects of his resume, including his time working as a food delivery driver. “I was very good at it,” Suga said. “I was good at driving.”

As a newly-named NBA ambassador, Suga also discussed his love for basketball. “When the NBA first called me, I wasn’t sure why they called. Why would they need an ambassador? Isn’t the NBA more famous than myself,” he responded, launching into wanting to be a pro player when he was younger. “But I wasn’t tall enough.”

Because of this, he’s also recognized himself as the best player in BTS. (Suga’s stage name also comes from “shooting guard.”)

“Are you kidding me?” he said. “I don’t think any of the other members know the basketball rules.”

To close out their talk, Suga took a shot with Fallon, given he talked about his tradition of taking one of whiskey before every show. Later in the episode, Suga also performed his recent single, “Haegeum,” and played the Imposter Challenge — where they eat two identical things and one is gross.

Check out Suga’s full interview, game, and “Haegeum” performance from The Tonight Show above.

We Are Approaching The Offseason Of NBA Discontent

The conversation throughout the 2022-23 NBA season focused on the lack of a clear frontrunner in the race for a championship. Every team perched atop the standings had apparent flaws or playoff demons of the past they had to prove they could overcome before there would be complete belief. The usual suspects all looked a step slow, and just about every team that made it into the playoffs believed they could capitalize on the void at the top and make a deep run.

With such opportunity comes a great sense of disappointment when a group falls short of lofty expectations and dreams, and for a number of teams, early exits from the postseason (or outright missing it altogether) have prompted calls for considerable change coming into the offseason. Every year, there are teams disappointed by how their season ends, but it’s rare for this many teams to have earnestly believed, either in the preseason or by the end of the regular season, in their ability to at least make a conference finals run.

As such, this summer figures to be fascinating, as nearly a third of the league believed it should have been a contender to win a series or two and found out the hard way their roster was not good enough (or healthy enough) to do so. That means an awful lot of teams will be considering moves big and small to reshape their rosters, and there may be more teams than usual willing to part ways with players in an effort to shuffle the deck.

Here we’ll look at nine teams all poised to shake things up this summer in big ways after falling short of expectations, with major decisions looming for each in free agency and on the trade market. Not included are teams like Sacramento and New Orleans, which had very different ends to their seasons, but feel more likely to run it back one more time before making any wholesale changes.

Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks, once the title favorites, were taken out by a Heat team that barely navigated the Play-In Tournament to earn the 8-seed. It’s their third time exiting the playoffs before the conference finals as a 1-seed, and while Giannis Antetokounmpo’s absence loomed large in two of their losses, some very familiar issues were present in the loss. The margins for Milwaukee remain razor-thin in the playoffs, with their title run a testament to Giannis’ greatness and the team’s ability to get the job done in crunch time during that postseason. However, constantly putting yourself in tight games in the playoffs means you are at the mercy of shooting variance, and for a team without elite shooting, that yields an awful lot of poor results.

Jrue Holiday continues to be a negative on offense in the postseason, with more than 40 games of a sample proving he’s just not an effective shooter in the playoffs. His defense remains elite on the perimeter, but Jimmy Butler was still able to bully his way to monster scoring performances. Khris Middleton was sensational offensively, but his movement on defense isn’t what it once was and he became a target in pick-and-rolls for Butler on the perimeter. They simply need more scoring punch beyond Antetokounmpo, who had his own free throw woes resurface and struggled getting to the rim down the stretch in Games 4 and 5, possibly a product of his back injury.

All of this is to say, they feel like a team that’s moved backwards, as the same questions they faced in 2020 and seemingly answered with their championship in 2021 are resurfacing. The problem now is, running it back feels far less palatable for a variety of reasons. For one, the new financial realities of the upcoming CBA mean Milwaukee will have a tougher time adding pieces if they lock back in to this core group. For another, it’s hard not to wonder if this group has already gone past its apex and is on the backside of the mountain.

Mike Budenholzer’s future as head coach is murky, as a new voice and new system on both ends could freshen things up. From a roster standpoint, Milwaukee has a ton of decisions to make this summer with regards to how they’ll proceed the next few years. Brook Lopez is a free agent and his role in holding things together defensively is hard to overstate. Middleton is eligible for an extension before hitting unrestricted free agency next year, but it’s hard to imagine what that looks like giving the team’s financial future. Holiday has one year left on his deal and a player option, and is a beloved figure in the organization (and around the league), but the playoff struggles offensively are very real and must be considered. The most likely outcome for the Bucks logically seems to be a coaching change and giving this group one more year to rekindle the fire of 2021, but they’ll at least have to take and make some calls to see what other, more dramatic options are out there after such a disappointing end to the season.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies have seen a second straight season end with a thud, causing them to re-examine their roster construction this offseason. Unlike the Bucks, they are still a young team with most of its stars still not yet in their primes, but that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be a sense of urgency in Memphis to make necessary roster changes to build a true contender.

Steven Adams and Brandon Clarke’s injuries loomed large, as they simply didn’t have the size to contend with Anthony Davis in their series with the Lakers, but there’s more to the Grizzlies problems than that. Dillon Brooks became one of the main characters in the series for his chirping off the court, but on it, he reminded many of his shortcomings, particularly as an offensive piece. The Lakers were thrilled to give Brooks space and dare him to shoot, which he obliged by jacking up 12.8 shots per game in the series (including seven threes a night) en route to 31.2/23.8/71.4 shooting splits. Tyus Jones likewise had a rough series, averaging just 4.5 points per game on 30.6 percent shooting, as he could not fill Morant’s shoes as admirably as he has in the past.

Like so many of the teams on this list, upgrading their eight-man rotation is going to be a priority for the Grizzlies. Internally, Luke Kennard provides some of what they need — lineups with Kennard and Desmond Bane together were the most fruitful on the offensive end prior to Kennard’s shoulder injury — but like the Clippers, Memphis seemed unwilling to give him a heavy minutes burden due to his defensive limitations. Memphis should still feel good about its core group of Morant, Bane, and Jaren Jackson Jr., but GM Zach Kleiman admitted in exit interviews they likely needed to shift focus away from the youth movement and more towards adding legit veteran help this offseason. The reported decision to jettison Brooks is a start, and it’s worth considering other veteran guard and wing options to build out their postseason depth.

Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers were downed by injuries in their series against the Suns, and it remains unclear exactly what they can expect from their stars moving forward. Lawrence Frank said they’ll be shifting focus back to “respecting the regular season” this coming year, and after building a roster full of big names that didn’t seem to have an awful lot of concern for fit, one would expect them to shuffle the deck in an effort to have a more cohesive vision for the roster.

Kawhi Leonard’s latest knee injury means he’ll continue to be a wild card in 2023-24. It’s unclear if he’ll be ready to go for the start of the season, or if he’ll once again be ultra-conservative in the regular season with one eye on hoping he can put together a fully healthy postseason. Paul George will be back from his own knee sprain, but health likewise remains the biggest question facing him. The rest of the Clippers roster has to almost entirely be up for reevaluation this summer, with the exception of Norman Powell, who is the only player they have signed beyond 2024-25.

Their effort to build a roster of interchangeable parts has not been a success, as their amalgamation of switchable, long wings has not yielded the intended results. They likely need to find a way to consolidate their group of rangy wings like Robert Covington, Nic Batum, Marcus Morris, and Terrance Mann in order to address their roster imbalance. What maybe helps the Clippers the most this summer is the fact they have players at a position so many teams are desperate for, and unloading a couple of their wings to create the requisite space to address their other needs should, in theory, not be all that difficult.

Adding center depth behind Ivica Zubac is among the priorities, but nothing is more important than addressing the point guard position. After pulling the ripcord on Reggie Jackson and John Wall, the Russell Westbrook experiment yielded some fascinating results, but it’s hard to imagine him being the answer to unlocking this group’s very best. After building the team to withstand absences from Leonard and George by building depth behind them, I’d expect the Clippers to seek out a point guard that mitigates their importance as on-ball creators, but can also augment them in the rare instances everyone is healthy.

Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cavaliers were eager to prove their young core could match up with the best in the East, only to find the lights too bright and be left wondering how much needs to change after a five-game rout at the hands of the Knicks. No one is without blame in Cleveland for faltering in the first round, as all four of their top players struggled in the matchup at various times, the bench was dreadful, and J.B. Bickerstaff’s rotations left something to be desired.

It would be a surprise to see Cleveland pull the plug on their core four after one early playoff exit. Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen all have room for improvement after a dreadful offensive series against the Knicks, but Allen in particular finds himself in the spotlight after being outplayed by Mitchell Robinson and Isaiah Hartenstein in the series. If there were a major more for the Cavs to consider — which, again, don’t bank on it — it would be moving Allen for wing help and then looking to fill the center position with a pair of defensive-minded, rebound hungry bigs like they just saw from New York.

What is a guarantee is that the Cavs will make some sort of addition to try and bolster the fifth spot in their lineup. Like a number of these teams, Cleveland learned the hard way how one weak link in your best five-man lineup can and will get exposed over and over in the postseason. Isaac Okoro was their best defensive option on Jalen Brunson, but was completely ignored on the offensive end, gumming up the works for Garland and Mitchell to drive the lane. Cedi Osman and Caris LeVert are theoretically better offensive options, but neither was a factor shooting the ball and were both worse defensively than Okoro, leaving the Cavs without a truly great five-man lineup to lean on in the series. Filling that gap is paramount to this team taking a step forward, and while the dramatic option of flipping Allen for that wing player and hoping to sign serviceable bigs to replace him is unlikely, they will have to find a way to upgrade the small forward spot in some way this summer.

Minnesota Timberwolves

The Timberwolves pushed all of their chips in on a trade for Rudy Gobert, and now must figure out how to build a coherent roster without much in the way of assets. The good news is Anthony Edwards looks like a legit star and there are some quality pieces on this roster around him. The bad news is Edwards’ two co-stars don’t make an awful lot of sense together and there’s not an easy answer for how to make their current “Big 3” work to the best of their abilities.

Karl-Anthony Towns and Gobert never jelled the way Minnesota hoped, and even with the understanding that Towns missed more than half the season with injuries, there just weren’t a lot of signs pointing to them starting to figure it out as a group. The concept was that Gobert would be the rim protector Towns isn’t, while Towns’ floor-spacing ability could make the duo work offensively without clogging the lane for Edwards. The problem is Towns often gets relegated to spot-up duty on offense, eliminating so much of his value as a playmaker inside, and defensively is forced to play more in space, where his propensity for picking up fouls is magnified. It just hasn’t worked as intended.

My biggest problem in figuring out what the Wolves do this summer is that I’m not sure how much they can reasonably expect to upgrade their rotation from what they have. Jaden McDaniels (who was very missed in the postseason), Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and Kyle Anderson were all very helpful in their various roles on the wing. Mike Conley was a needed steady-hand at point guard, and Naz Reid was at times the best backup center in the league (and for sure the best third center on any NBA roster). They won’t have money to make a substantial upgrade and for what they will have to spend, I’m not certain they can get many better players in than what they had this year. Maybe you find a better backup point guard than Austin Rivers, but that’s not a guarantee. Maybe you find a slightly better 3-and-D than Taurean Prince. Maybe you can bring back Reid, an unrestricted free agent.

The truth is, unless they want to make a gigantic move and put KAT on the trade block (because Edwards is clearly “the guy” and there’s no way to recoup anything approaching value for Gobert given what they gave up), all they can do is try to work on the margins and hope next year Towns and Gobert figure something out they couldn’t in their first year together.

Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks likewise went all-in on their current roster, trading multiple firsts for Dejounte Murry and having recently extended De’Andre Hunter, Clint Capela, and Bogdan Bogdanovic. The result was an unspectacular season that ended in an unspectacular six-game loss to the Celtics in the first round. They will enter the offseason with John Collins on the trade block for the third straight year, and while many close to the team believe he actually gets moved this summer given that’s the only real option to shuffle the deck on a stagnant roster, that was also the prevailing thought last offseason and this year at the deadline.

They will be banking on the return they get from a potential Collins trade, plus internal improvement and a full offseason with new coach Quin Snyder to vault them into the conversation of East contenders. That would be a considerable leap from where they were this year, and there’s the ever-present question of whether ownership will be willing to spend into the tax after various tax-dodging moves in the past — most notably trading Kevin Huerter to Sacramento last offseason.

The Hawks do get to carry a bit of positivity into the summer with the way Trae Young responded this postseason against Boston, with the star guard being effusive in his praise of Snyder and what he thinks the new coach will do for the team. Still, this is a team that has just one major move it can really make and the entire league knows it, so how much they can get in return for Collins will be the deciding factor in how big a step forward (or backward) this team takes next season.

Dallas Mavericks

Having to tank the last week of the season after a failed midseason trade for a star in order to to try and save a pick from a previous failed trade for a star is a pretty perfect encapsulation of the Dallas Mavericks’ team-building mantra recently. It is also why you’d be hard-pressed to find too many Mavs fans who are optimistic that the front office will suddenly figure things out this offseason and pull off the miracle of rebuilding this roster into a contender in one summer. The good news is, Doncic’s presence provides a wider margin for error in building a competitive squad, but it also means there is pressure to be consistently near the top of the West.

The first order of business will be Kyrie Irving, who they will unquestionably try to re-sign, but Dallas finds itself at the whims of a man who is known to change his mind rather frequently about what he wants and where he wants to be. Dallas will have little in the way of negotiating leverage with Irving, because given what they traded away to land him, they will be fairly desperate to retain him rather than seeing him walk for nothing. If he walks, there’s no way to completely replace him in free agency, as they could free up about $25 million, but with so many bloated deals on the books already, max space would be hard to come by. Irving returning isn’t a guarantee, but I would say it should be the expected outcome because he has made clear he wants another large, long-term contract, and the Mavs will have more of an impetus to give him one than any other team.

Retaining Irving is step one, but it also requires a wholesale shift with the rest of the roster. As we saw in his limited time in Dallas, the Irving-Doncic pairing needs far more support on the defensive end of the floor that the current roster cannot provide. The frontcourt will need almost a complete overhaul to create better balance and bring in some much-needed rim protection. Christian Wood’s departure feels like a guarantee, and while they’re stuck with McGee for one more year, he won’t be someone they’re expecting to contribute. Maxi Kleber is the only rotation big guaranteed to be back, and they are going to need to seek out someone with a strong defensive presence who also can be a pick-and-roll partner for Doncic and Irving either in free agency or on the trade market.

They also need a 3-and-D wing to replace what was lost by sending Dorian Finney-Smith to Brooklyn in the Irving deal, and as noted in a number of the sections above, they’ll have ample competition for landing such players on the free agency or trade markets. As long as Doncic is on the roster, the Mavs will have a chance to be a playoff squad in the West, but they learned this year that his presence alone isn’t a guarantee of that. How they apply the lessons of this season will determine a lot for the team’s future, both in the short and long-term.

Toronto Raptors

The Raptors have ousted their coach and promise considerable changes after their collection of long, athletic wings failed to coalesce into anything more than an idea. Like the Clippers, their overflowing cupboard of 3-and-D types should make them very popular in trade talks, and should allow Masai Ujiri to reshape this roster with solid returns, should he so choose. Toronto has made clear their intentions on bringing back unrestricted free agent Jakob Poeltl, but the same names that were bantered about at the trade deadline figure to be back on the market this summer.

This season felt like the end to an era, a last chance for this group to take a leap and they simply never did. Fred VanVleet is an unrestricted free agent and may simply walk to a new opportunity. OG Anunoby is the player most likely to be coveted by teams like Memphis or Dallas that are in desperate need of a wing upgrade, but Toronto has made clear their asking price on Anunoby will remain extremely high. Pascal Siakam is the even bigger move they can make, but he still seems like the player the Raptors choose to build around rather than deal away unless a full-scale teardown is in the works. Scottie Barnes got pegged as their next superstar, but plateaued as a sophomore, leading to questions about whether he should be the focal point of Toronto’s next team build.

There aren’t a lot of easy answers for the Raptors, but they are the team that could set off the most dominoes in the NBA this offseason given the potential trades they could make. How Ujiri and company proceed will be something all 29 other teams are monitoring.

Portland Trail Blazers

The Blazers certainly appear to be at a crossroads where they’ll need to choose this summer what direction the team will take for years to come. Both options will require some major moves, but one involves them becoming a seller and the other sees them as a buyer. We’ll know which way they’re planning on going by the time June’s Draft arrives, as their best trade asset to build around Damian Lillard will be whatever pick they land with the NBA’s fifth-best lottery odds. Which way they go may be determined by lottery balls, as anything beyond the No. 1 overall pick will require some deep thought as to how to proceed.

Landing the top pick might be the only path that doesn’t involve huge moves this offseason for Portland, as adding Victor Wembanyama would give them a chance to remain competitive with Lillard while also building for the future. However, anything else will require a lot of talk within the walls of the Blazers front office, where they can opt for a youth movement, keeping their pick and potentially moving off of some of their veterans to further bolster their draft capital for the future, or use that pick to acquire veteran help now to take one more crack at building a playoff contender around Lillard, who was playing some of the best basketball of his career in the middle of this season.

This year proved the roster is not where it needs to be to make that happen, and it’s a genuine question of whether they’re even just one or two moves away from being where they want to be. To move off of a top-5 pick would almost require them to believe that, and we’re less than two months away from finding out where they stand on that question.

Adrienne Bailon-Houghton reveals the frustrating reality of surrogacy with a message to moms

No matter how you become a mother, the journey is worth it. But oftentimes people omit the negative parts for many reasons, whether it’s a desire to not make people feel bad for them or to not appear ungrateful. Thankfully, the taboo around the hard topics of infertility and pregnancy have been lifting, and people are feeling more free to express themselves.

Recently, Adrienne Bailon-Houghton, former co-star of “The Cheetah Girls” and co-host of “The Real,” revealed her own struggles with infertility and the mixed feelings that came along with it. While we know Bailon-Houghton eventually welcomed a son, Ever James, via surrogate, this is the first time we’ve heard the unexpected revelation of the new mom feeling frustrated by the surrogacy process.

During the time leading up to finding a surrogate, Bailon-Houghton and her husband, Isreal Houghton, tried to conceive for six years.

When people dream about having a baby, the thought of an extended infertility journey likely isn’t something that’s top of mind. It seems like a lot of people get pregnant just from sitting near someone on a city bus, so the idea that it may take years to finally welcome your own child feels unbelievable. But for some, that’s a reality, and Bailon-Houghton is sharing what that has been like for her.

The actor has been open more recently about experiencing eight miscarriages and attempting IVF, which turned out to also be unsuccessful. Bailon-Houghton told Today.com that she didn’t know that infertility was going to be part of her journey.

“I mean, I should have known initially when I did my (first) egg retrieval. My girlfriend was doing it at the same time as me and she got 18 eggs. When I did my retrieval, I got four,” Bailon-Houghton shared with the outlet.

The former talk show co-host went on to explain that up until that point in her life she had never heard of a failed cycle, but sadly, all four of Bailon-Houghton’s fertilized eggs were not viable to be transferred. After multiple failed IVF attempts, the couple was told that they had one fertilized egg left, and their doctor suggested surrogacy, according to People.

The surrogate got pregnant on the first attempt at implantation and the countdown to her son’s birthday began. But for Bailon-Houghton, she was having some unexpected emotions around surrogacy. The actor told Today.com that she felt robbed of the experience of carrying a child.

“It sounds so stupid—so superficial,” she said to Today.com. “But I felt robbed of maternity photos. I wanted to feel the movement of a baby inside me. I wanted my husband to experience my pregnant body. I imagined my son being born, and now had other people in this room that were not a part of what I imagined.”

Feeling frustrated or even angry about the journey of surrogacy is likely more common than people realize, so it’s refreshing to hear someone talk about those complicated emotions. And it turns out, Bailon-Houghton wasn’t down to just one egg as her doctor believed. After more testing, it was discovered that she had five more eggs left, according to People, and she plans on trying to carry them herself.

The star had some words of encouragement for moms who may be experiencing infertility.

“Your journey to motherhood is your journey,” Bailon-Houghton told Today.com. “No one can rob you of that—infertility can’t even rob you of that. Ask yourself: ‘Why do you have the desire to be a mom so deeply?’ Ultimately, it comes down to love. So if your ultimate goal is motherhood, keep your eye on that and don’t worry about what happens during the process.”

But her encouragement didn’t stop there. The new mom and her husband started the Faith and Familia Foundation, which helps other couples struggling with infertility with money for IVF so they can start their families.
