What To Watch: Our Picks For The TV Shows And Movies We Think You Should Stream This Week

Each week our staff of film and TV experts surveys the entertainment landscape to select the ten best new/newish shows available for you to stream at home. We put a lot of thought into our selections, and our debates on what to include and what not to include can sometimes get a little heated and feelings may get hurt, but so be it, this is an important service for you, our readers. With that said, here are our selections for this week.

20. Muppets Mayhem (Disney Plus)

MUPPET
DISNEY

You know how sometimes you’ll be sitting around the house and thinking “Man, I sure wish there was a television show about Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem band from the Muppets, maybe one where they try to record a new album and go platinum in the world of modern-day music”? Well, good news: That exact show now exists on Disney Plus! So, if you, like everyone, could use a little more Muppets in your life, here you go. Another success for all of us.

Watch it on Disney+

19. Dead Ringers (Amazon Prime)

RINGERS
AMAZON

There’s a glut of good TV at the moment so even a modern remake of a bit of classic David Cronenberg-ian body horror needs some buzzwords to cut through the noise. Luckily, Dead Ringers has that. And we’ll list them out for you now: Rachel Weisz. Evil twins. Surrealist sci-fi. Fertility clinic. Power struggles. A shocking finale. And Rachel Weisz (again). Helmed by Alice Birch (Normal People) with a few episodes directed by horror maestro Karyn Kusama, this show takes Cronenberg’s central idea and gender-flips it, giving us twin obstetricians Beverly and Elliot Mantle whose day job sees them playing god at a cutting-edge fertility clinic. But, when their toxic relationship dynamics are threatened by both their professional success and personal entanglements, their bond reaches disturbing new depths.

Watch it on Amazon Prime

18. Mrs. Davis (Peacock)

DAVIS
PEACOCK

GLOW standout Betty Gilpin is teaming up with TV king Damon Lindelof in this seriously terrific show about a nun who fights an almighty algorithm. What’s not to enjoy about that, especially since it delivers upon a truly nutso premise? Gilpin plays Simone, not to be confused with the title character of the AI, and Margo Martindale co-stars as a booze-loving nun. If there’s anything that Damon Lindelof has taught us in his post-Lost days, you never know precisely what to expect from his projects. Never forget Lube Man.

Watch it on Peacock

17. City on Fire (Apple TV Plus)

CITY
APPLE

This series did some cutting to the source material of Garth Risk Hallberg’s same-named book, and the result is a more straightforward focus on the central mystery. This works both for and against the limited series, which is still intriguing enough — a shooting victim spends much of the series in a coma while other characters scramble to solve said mystery. Major takeaway here: Jemima Kirke should be in more things.

Watch it on Apple TV Plus

16. The Other Two (HBO Max)

OTHER
HBO

We’re in a golden era of Hollywood satire, specifically when it comes to HBO’s offerings with Hacks and Barry (in and around all the murder and Chechen drug wars). Even Succession dips a toe into the mix from time to time (gotta get that franchise pump-pumpin!). But while The Other Two doesn’t have the same level of prestige or attention, nothing bites harder than this Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider created show that returns for its third season with the entire Dubek family thriving while also searching for meaning and connection.

Watch it on HBO Max

15. Silo (Apple TV Plus)

SILO
APPLE

Dystopian sci-fi has never been done quite like this before. In Apple TV+’s newest drama, a ruined and toxic future that forces humanity to dwell in underground silos hundreds of stories deep isn’t the antagonist of the story, it’s merely the setting. The real problem lies in a murderous cover-up whose unraveling threads reveal a bigger conspiracy when a scrappy mechanic (Rebecca Ferguson) and a disillusioned sheriff (David Oyelowo) start tugging in earnest. What is truth and who decides it are the questions this show is asking but even if the answers don’t come readily, the insane worldbuilding and thrilling action will leave you happy to keep guessing.

Watch it on Apple TV Plus

14. Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie (Apple TV Plus)

STILL
APPLE

Authorized celebrity documentaries often lack bite and feel like an extension of a PR campaign, but Still goes deeper than most, telling the story of Michael J. Fox’s life from his origins to his ’80s pop culture takeover, the courtship of his wife Tracy Pollan, his Parkinson’s diagnosis/decision to tell the word, and the aftershocks of that. It’s not just a linear unfolding of an icon’s life and the depth and care that’s used to paint a portrait of him now as he takes stock and counts his blessings while being challenged by the progressive and debilitating disease, it’s the way in which Guggenheim chooses to highlight key moments. As we see with Fox himself, there’s a lot of light and joy running through this as it weaves together re-enactments, voiceovers, archival footage, Fox interviews, and needle drops to give new life to familiar stories and creates montages so exhilarating you’ll think you’re watching the ’80s pop culture version of The Last Dance. Pair all that with Fox’s charm and candor, and Still feels special.

13. White House Plumbers (HBO)

PLUMBERS
HBO

The Veep guys bring us the Watergate story that you never knew that you’d enjoy watching. Justin Theroux delivers a knockout performance in this David Mandel-directed adaptation of Egil Krogh and Matthew Krogh’s book, Integrity. In doing so, the team puts a satiric spin upon the experiences of Egil (played by Rich Sommer) during and after his time leading the Special Investigations Unit that was tasked with plugging information leaks. Yep, that’s where the “plumbers” comes from, and this show is fun and tragic but, fortunately, mostly fun.

Watch it on HBO Max

12. Yellowjackets (Showtime)

YELLOW
SHOWTIME

It’s time to go back to the wilderness, where this season doubles down on the darkness and refuses to apologize for it. The show still puts forth one of the most solid examples of dual timelines in TV history. Not only that, but all four sets of leads are firing on all cylinders this year. Sure, Juliette Lewis can pull off this type of role in her sleep, but we love to see her do it. Christina Ricci chews everything up, and Melanie Lynskey is finally getting her due. Oh, and don’t forget about those earworms. Get ready for the return of the Antler Queen, gang. Spooky.

Watch it on Paramount Plus

11. Ted Lasso (Apple TV Plus)

LASSO
APPLE

Break out your biscuits and put on your custom-bedazzled Diamond Dogs silk bomber jackets because the best mustache on TV is back, baby. This might be the last season of Ted Lasso which is a bittersweet pill to swallow but it’s best not to dwell on all of the loose ends still in need of tying. Ted wouldn’t. Instead, let’s just enjoy these characters as long as we have them. And hope something awful (but not irreversible) and humiliating (but appropriately so) and devastating (but ultimately life-changing in a positive way) happens to Nate “not so great” Shelley.

Watch it on Apple TV Plus

10. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (Netflix)

BRIDGE
NETFLIX

What we have here is a Bridgerton prequel, a good one, that focuses on the real-life marriage of Charlotte to King George II, with the usual Bridgerton twist of Olde England being a racially integrated society. Shonda Rhimes serves as showrunner and gives it all the classic Rhimes-y snap and pizzazz, which works well with the show’s subject matter. If you like Bridgerton or history or a sexy/fizzy series about rich people who are kind of miserable, this might be your new favorite show… or at least a way to kill a rainy weekend.

Watch it on Netflix

9. High Desert (Apple TV)

HIGH
APPLE

Patricia Arquette finally gets wacky again as an ex-drug dealer who decides, what the heck, to be a private investigator. She is no Jessica Jones, but that’s alright because she’s much more chaotic with barely restrained energy. It’s an extremely weird show that co-stars other actors also very good at playing weird. That includes Matt Dillon and Bernadette Peters and Brad Garrett, along with Rupert Friend playing a guru. Underneath it all, the show explores the complex nature of grief, but fortunately, nothing gets too heavy.

Watch it on Apple TV Plus

8. Primo (Amazon FreeVee)

PRIMO
FREEVEE

Primo has three big things going for it. One, it is loosely based on the life of bestselling author Shea Serrano, who is cool and funny. Two, it comes from Michael Schur, creator of Parks and Recreation and The Good Place, who is also cool and funny in addition to being good at making shows. Three, it’s, well, free, as it’s airing on Amazon’s FreeVee channel instead of on Prime. Tough to beat all of that on paper, you know?

Watch it on Amazon Prime

7. Class of ’09 (Hulu)

CLASS
HULU

What we have here is a timeline-hopping thriller starring Kate Mara and Brian Tyree Henry that follows a class of new FBI agents — you guessed it, the class of 2009 — as they deal with various changes to the justice system and the rise of articulate intelligence and, well, a lot of other stuff, too. Which shouldn’t be a surprise. You saw the thing about multiple timelines. There is ambition here. That’s not always a great thing, but it does make for an interesting hook.

Watch it on Hulu

6. Air (Amazon Prime)

AIR
AMAZON

Well, guess what: We have Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and Viola Davis in a movie about Nike landing Michael Jordan as a client back in the early 1980s. It’s a fun watch. Davis is a powerhouse as Jordan’s mother. Chris Tucker pops up every now and then and just steals whatever scene he’s in by giving it the full Chris Tucker. It’s one of those movies that, in another era, you’d get sucked into on basic cable at noon on a Saturday. Which works out well, because you can still just watch it on a Saturday. This Saturday, if you want. Look at that. Another problem solved.

Watch it on Amazon Prime

5. The Great (Hulu)

GREAT
HULU

God only knows how Elle Fanning’s Catherine the Great and Nicholas Hoult’s Emperor Peter III somehow haven’t killed each other yet, but there’s still time for that to happen. Their arranged marriage has slid deeper into misery, but they must get their sh*t together to stay in power. History tells us that Catherine was Russia’s longest-reigning female empress and that she overthrew her husband, but god only knows where this show will actually go. Conventional history went out the door a long time ago.

Watch it on Hulu

4. Working: What We Do All Day (Netflix)

WORKING
NETFLIX

Former President Barack Obama — remember that guy? — narrates this Netflix show about work, both what it is and what it means, as well as just the nature of, like, having a job. It’s kind of cool, really, to see a politician out there celebrating regular people a little bit instead of shouting into a microphone about whatever cultural issue is currently dividing everyone. If this comes back for another season, he should do an episode about people who, to choose an example at random, make lists of shows and monies people can watch on the weekend. You know, the real heroes.

Watch it on Netflix

3. White Men Can’t Jump (Hulu)

WHITE
HULU

First comment under the trailer for the new White Men Can’t Jump is about what it can’t be, which is a direct sequel that came out 30 years ago with Woody and Wesley blowing us all away with their A+ chemistry.

From the trailer, this new version looks like a layered story about ball and living and dying by the hustle with plenty of room for jokes and for this new duo (Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow) to show off their own impressive chemistry. The question is, can people let the classic be the classic and give this one some space to be its own thing?

Watch it on Hulu

2. Barry (HBO)

Bill Hader Barry S4
HBO

Everyone’s favorite hitman-turned-actor-but-still-sometimes-hitman is back for a final season. Things get… bleak. Still funny, borderline silly in parts, but also just very, very bleak. As it probably should be given… you know… the murders that Barry has committed. A lot of them. Thank God we have NoHo Hank and Henry Winkler in there to break it all up for us. This is our last season with all of these maniacs. Let’s enjoy it while we can.

Watch it on HBO Max

1. Succession (HBO)

SUCC
HBO

Good news and bad news, ladies and gentlemen. The good: The cretins and weasels of Succession are back for a fourth season full of drama and dark comedy and more than a little delightful flailing by Cousin Greg. The bad: This is also the final season. So… you’re going to have to come to terms with that as things play out. It’s a lot to deal with, especially with the frenetic pace things have been and are shaking down. This is one of our best shows. It’s going to sting to say goodbye. But let’s all agree to enjoy the ride while we can.

‘Futurama’ Is Back, Baby, And There’s A Hulu Premiere Date To Prove It

If you’ve been waiting like Fry’s dog Seymour for any news about the Futurama reboot, you’re in luck: Hulu announced today that season 11 of the future-set animated series will premiere on Monday, July 24. (Also, sorry for reminding you about Seymour). New episodes will be released every Monday on the streaming service; season 11 will consist of 10 episodes, followed by 10 more episodes at a later date.

Hulu also revealed a synopsis for the new season:

“After a brief ten-year hiatus, Futurama has crawled triumphantly from the cryogenic tube, its full original cast and satirical spirit intact. The ten all-new episodes of season eleven have something for everyone. New viewers will be able to pick up the series from here, while long-time fans will recognize payoffs to decades-long mysteries – including developments in the epic love story of Fry and Leela, the mysterious contents of Nibbler’s litter box, the secret history of evil Robot Santa, and the whereabouts of Kif and Amy’s tadpoles. Meanwhile there’s a whole new pandemic in town as the crew explores the future of vaccines, bitcoin, cancel culture, and streaming TV.”

Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, and David Herman are all back, as is John DiMaggio following a pay dispute. However much he’s getting, it wasn’t enough; there is no Futurama without Bender, and there is no Bender without John DiMaggio.

Damian Lillard Tweets A Message For Any Blazers Fan Who May Want To Trade Him

The Portland Trail Blazers will pick third in the 2023 NBA Draft, and because they lost out on the chance to pick Victor Wembanyama, they have a decision to make on how they want to approach next month. The team could, if it wants, get quite the haul back if it decides to move the No. 3 pick to a team that really likes Scoot Henderson, Brandon Miller, or one of the Thompson twins. This would give them the chance to maximize whatever is left of Damian Lillard‘s prime by putting established NBA players around him.

They could just make the pick and give Lillard another young and talented running mate, or if they’re really taking a long-term view, there is the nuclear option: Trade Lillard, get a king’s ransom back, and start a new chapter. There is no indication that the Blazers want to do that and no indication that Lillard wants out, mind you, but on Thursday morning, Lillard sent a tweet directed towards anyone in the fanbase who would like to see them take that approach.

It is worth mentioning that there isn’t any mass movement to get Lillard on another team in an effort to acquire assets as far as we can tell, so this mostly appears to be a response to anyone who would want to go down that path. In a follow-up tweet, Lillard clarified that this is the case.

Lillard’s been mentioned as a superstar who could change teams for years despite the fact that he’s repeatedly stated a commitment to sticking around and helping Portland navigate its recent rough stretch. The All-Star guard turns 33 in July.

When Will ‘Blackberry’ Be On Streaming?

If 2022 was the year of tech scammers, 2023 is the year of bizarre business opportunities being glamorized for Hollywood. We saw Ben Affleck do it with sneakers for Air, and Taron Egerton brought a puzzle video game to life with Tetris, so it’s only natural that we get a movie about the high-tech cellphone that had everyone BBM-ing each other in 2008. That phrase sounded so normal at the time.

Blackberry stars Jay Baruchel as the real-life Mike Lazaridis, the founder of the infamous Blackberry phone/ businessman cult that swept the early 2000s then disappeared after the iPhone began its reign. The film is based on the nonfiction book Losing the Signal: The Untold Story Behind the Extraordinary Rise and Spectacular Fall of BlackBerry by Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff. The movie also stars Glenn Howerton, Cary Elwes, Saul Rubinek, Rich Sommer, Martin Donovan, Michael Ironside, and Matt Johnson.

According to the official logline, Blackberry tells the story of the “meteoric catastrophic demise” of the world’s first smartphone. The movie hit select theaters on May 12th, though it might be a while until it hits online.

The good news is that Hulu has a longstanding deal with IFC films, which means Blackberry will likely end up on the streamer sometime this year. Until then, you’ll have to head to your local theater in order to watch the drama/comedy.

HER Is ‘Grateful’ For ‘The Journey’ In Her Soaring Ballad, Helping ESPN Soundtrack The 2023 NBA Playoffs

HER (real name Gabriella Wilson) knows about winning trophies. She’s well-positioned to earn EGOT status. All that’s left is a Tony Award, which she’ll have a shot at as a member of the production team of Here Lies Love, debuting on Broadway this summer.

So it’s fitting that HER’s newest single, “The Journey,” is helping ESPN soundtrack its coverage of the 2023 NBA Playoffs. It had been included as an unreleased track, but as of Thursday, May 18, it’s her first solo release since 2021’s Grammy-nominated Back Of My Mind album.

One week ago, HER teased the single with an Instagram video of her listening back to her vocals in the studio with live strings instrumentalists recording. “ITS THE VOCAL AND STRINGS FOR ME,” she captioned the post. “I can’t wait for you to hear what I’ve been working so hard on.”

She took to Instagram again with a clip of the polished version earlier this week. “THE JOURNEY… It hasn’t been an easy one. But I’m grateful for it all. Ready for the next chapter… I’ll share more soon,” the five-time Grammy winner wrote.

“‘The Journey’ has been included within various in-game ESPN production elements, including vignettes voiced over by HER,” a press release explained. “The vignettes and additional production elements outline, through the song lyrics, the unique paths through the NBA Playoffs for all 16 teams.”

The field is down to four. The 2023 NBA Playoffs continued with the Denver Nuggets topping the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals on Tuesday, May 16, and the Miami Heat claiming Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals over the Boston Celtics on Wednesday, May 17. Whichever team hoists the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy will still have a ways to go to catch HER.

Listen to “The Journey” below.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Said It’s A ‘Lie’ That She Defended George Santos, So Twitter Brought The Receipts

Marjorie Taylor Greene is trying to distance herself from George Santos, which is proving to be difficult thanks to a mountain of receipts she left behind. The separation from Santos occurred during Greene’s second attempt at impeaching Joe Biden (Marj is big into impeachment this week) when she was asked about her defense of the embattled congressman who’s currently facing federal charges for fraud, money laundering, and theft.

“I never defended George Santos,” Greene said during a Thursday morning press conference. “No one should report that. That would be a lie.”

It actually is not a lie. After Santos joined Congress, Greene was frequently photographed next to the controversial congressman during the contentious Speaker of the House vote. Like Greene, Santos backed Kevin McCarthy, which has provided Santos much-needed cover in Congress. Greene also went on record slamming Tulsi Gabbard for calling out Santos’ laundry list of lies on Fox News, and then there’s the bill that Greene and Santos co-sponsored to ban books from school.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Greene also fired off a Twitter thread defending Santos, which further added to the pile of receipts that people pulled out following Greene’s denial. In short, Greene very publicly hitched herself to Santos’ wagon, and that alliance isn’t going away easily.

Ice Spice Apparently Replied To Fan Who Slid Into Her DMs With An Epic Roast

Social media has put fans into direct contact with their favorite stars but there’s a downside to that for both sides. While entertainers sometimes have to deal with bullies, trolls, and the occasional thirst bucket, fans are subject to stan army backlashes, being called out on the timeline, or even, in some cases, being directly insulted by their faves — which one fan seemingly learned the hard way when he tried to slide into Ice Spice‘s DMs.

“Hey mamas,” he wrote, which… is a horrible opener, kid. Sorry, not sorry. If you’re going to pull up from 40 feet like this, your form better be perfect. This is just a half-court heave. It’s no surprise that Ice didn’t hold back with her critical response (assuming that the post was real in the first place). “Small ass dreads and no Nike tech,” she wrote back. Ouch. The DMer showed his friends, who put him on blast via social media — and you just know whatever damage she did was nothing compared to how badly they cooked him for the rest of the day.

The so-called “Princess Diana” of rap is getting used to the attention after being one of hip-hop’s hottest names since her hit single “Munch” basically took over the internet last summer. It’s no secret that her looks have been a part of her success, prompting one fan to take out a billboard inviting her to their graduation party and sparking rumors of half-million-dollar dates with NBA stars. And in this era of doing anything for social media clout (shout-out to Cardi and ‘Set!), there’s no doubt the shenanigans are just getting started.

Sting Is Preparing For ‘A Battle’ Against AI, Something That ‘Doesn’t Impress Me At All’

Sting reportedly sold his solo catalog and The Police catalog for an estimated $300 million, as reported by The New York Times in early 2022, and he began this year by performing a private concert for Microsoft executives the night before the company announced sweeping layoffs.

However, Sting will not sell out to AI, and he fears the impact it may have on human job security moving forward.

“The building blocks of music belong to us, to human beings,” Sting recently told the BBC. “That’s going to be a battle we all have to fight in the next couple of years — defending our human capital against AI.”

The 17-time Grammy winner added, “It’s similar to the way I watch a movie with CGI. It doesn’t impress me at all. I get immediately bored when I see a computer-generated image. I imagine I will feel the same way about AI making music. Maybe for electronic dance music, it works. But for songs, you know, expressing emotions, I don’t think I will be moved by it.”

Earlier this month, will.i.am shared with Uproxx his opinion on AI. The Black Eyed Peas frontman believes “hip-hop is a great genre to start with when it comes to AI because hip-hop is a technical form of music.”

“The future of popular music isn’t people,” will.i.am added, “But the future of social activism around music, that’s the only way I think we are still going to be needed.”

Rachel Bilson Says That Talking Openly About Her Sex Life Has Cost Her A Job: ‘I Haven’t Said Anything Inappropriate!’

Rachel Bilson’s podcasting side gig (as co-host of Broad Ideas) has led to a smattering of revelations that prove that she’s anything about shy while discussing her sex life. She infamously admitted that she fondly remembers Bill Hader’s huge dong, which led to a subsequent clarification that she wasn’t referencing Hader while (on a separate occasion) discussing her first orgasm “from, like d*ck” in her late 30s.

Her most forthright utterances, though, involved Bilson (very humorously) revealing her favorite and least favorite sexual positions while guesting on the Women On Top podcast. She grew extremely candid while discussing how she likes to be “manhandled,” and how she’s not thrilled with “doggy” because it “depend[s] on the actual d–k… Because it can go so deep and hurt.”

And via E! Online, Bilson is now letting the world know that she lost a gig over these remarks:

“First of all, I said it in a joking manner in the interview, like, ‘Yeah, I wanna get f–king get manhandled.’ Basically, it’s like, okay give control or take control in the bedroom, whatever … I’ve been floored honestly. Everything was set in motion and I lost the job. It sucks.”

As well, Rachel firmly believes, “I haven’t said anything inappropriate!” She does not clarify what the gig was, but she doesn’t regret discussing her sex life. “Choice of language, if I could go back, now knowing I lost a job, maybe I would say it differently,” she conceded. “But I still wouldn’t not say it.”

Further, she cannot believe how “[a] single mom, a woman, lost a job because they were being candid and honest and the subject was sex.”

For sure, Bilson hurt no one with her remarks, so it’s actually staggering that a job landed on the chopping block as a result. Perhaps she’ll reveal more about this lost role with time, but for now, everyone shall wonder.
