Viral song hilariously imagines naming other things the way we named ‘pineapple’

The way words get added to a language is an endlessly fascinating topic. Most English root words originate from Latin and Greek, but we also excel at borrowing from languages around the world.

Some of our words are just weird, though. For instance, “pineapple.” Rather than calling the delicious yellow fruit with pokey leaves “ananas” like most of the world, our ancestors apparently took a look at one and decided, “Eh, kinda looks like a pinecone. But it’s clearly a fruit. How about we call it a ‘pineapple’?”

A video creator who goes by @thejazzemu made a hilarious song exploring what would happen if we named other words the way we named “pineapple”—by combining two words with “minimal conceptual link”—and it’s a silly feast of musical and etymological brilliance.

Take the word “curtain” and change it into “windowwink.” So much more fun and descriptive. What about calling a banana a “hotdoglemon” instead? Utterly delightful.

Watch how the Jazz Emu pineapple-izes several English words in a clever, catchy and chaotically over-the-top song:

@thejazzemu

The most OFFENSIVE word in the English Language? #offense #word #language #cancelculture #pineapple #linguistics #fyp #foryou #help

People have tuned in millions of times to view the video, and the comments on YouTube explain why.

“Morninggravel almost made me spit out my morninggravel,” wrote Steve.

“This is my favorite sound-dance. When I’m on the poop-throne, in the rain-box, or at my money-slaver, I enjoy listening to it. Gets the meat-paddle-tips tapping,” wrote Joshua Shupe.

“‘When every other language said ananas English panicked and mentally combined the concept of a pine cone with frikkin’ apple’ is a structurally-delicious sentence,” shared Ashanna Redwolf.

“Damn….why is this song so catchy? Also, why am I so entranced by this ‘dance’ that goes along with it?” wrote ChrisJMP88.

Seriously, though. We need a full-length version on Spotify, please.

Believe it or not, the actual history of the word “pineapple” is even weirder than what is relayed here. According to Merriam-Webster, the seeded part of a pine tree that we now refer to as a pinecone actually used to be called a “pineapple.” Yes, really. So the word pineapple actually predates pinecone—it just happened to stick to the fruit.

Why would a pinecone be called a pineapple in the first place? Merriam-Webster explains that the practice of calling any foreign fruit, vegetable or nut an “apple” stems from ancient times. For example, a peach was first known as a “Persian apple,” and a pomegranate’s initial name meant “an apple with many seeds.” So even though a pinecone wasn’t technically a fruit, it was still referred to as a “pineapple”…that is until it became a pinecone and the fruit forever claimed “pineapple” for itself.

Words are just so wacky. I vote that we just call things whatever we want and let people figure out what we mean.

Killer Mike Leads A Dungeon Family Reunion With ‘Scientists & Engineers’ Featuring André 3000 And Future

Killer Mike leads a Dungeon Family reunion on his new single “Scientists & Engineers” which reunites Mike with OutKast’s Andre 3000 and DF affiliate Future. Over a gospel and funk-inflected instrumental straight from the late-90s Atlanta breakout, Mike, André, and Future deliver some of their hardest verses in a long time, while Eryn Allen Kane sings the soul-stirring chorus. “Scientists & Engineers” is due to appear on Mike’s upcoming album Michael, his first solo project in over a decade.

The song almost didn’t make the album, though. As Mike recounted during the annual Black Music Moguls Brunch in Atlanta, André initially wanted to nix the collaboration, right up until Mike sent him the completed version with Kane’s chorus. That was when he fully bought in, saving the track from the proverbial cutting room floor.

Mike also revealed in another interview that he’d spent $500,000 recording Michael, only managing to recoup the costs with an advance from Loma Vista Records. The reason the album is so important to him is that it’s his first time telling his full story, as he told Vulture’s Craig Jenkins. “There was never a moment where people got a chance to see the whole of Michael. They saw bits and pieces in the music… I wanted people to know that the character in Run the Jewels is a whole human being and a man who feels like there’s something that needs to be said.”

Listen to “Scientists & Engineers” above. Michael is due June 16 via VLNS/Loma Vista.

Kristen Stewart Offered An Irresistible Description For Her Upcoming ‘Stoner Girl Comedy’ After Enjoying An Edible

Kristen Stewart has long moved past the phase in her post-Twilight career where she’s simply making bold choices. Now, she’s having fun while doing so. That’s what one is prone to do after devastatingly portraying Princess Di and then promoting the film while wondering, “Where was your f*cking homie?” As such, Stewart is currently working on her directorial debut, The Chronology Of Water, which is based upon Lidia Yuknavitch’s harrowing memoir and will star Imogen Poots. Yet she’s keeping a sense of balance. She’s also working on a “super gay ghost-hunting adventure” reality TV program, and as she told Rachel Sennott (Shiva Baby, Bodies Bodies Bodies, The Idol), she’s currently writing a “stoner girl comedy.”

Mind you, this discussion took place while Stewart was asking the questions for Interview magazine after admittedly taking half an edible. This sounds like the perfect mood to discuss the following subject, which hopefully means that KStew will be joining the R-Rated comedy revival currently led by JLaw. We shall see how that goes, but here’s what Stewart said about co-writing that “stupid” comedy with her partner, Dylan Meyer, while talking to Sennott:

“Me and Dylan are writing a movie. It’s a stoner girl comedy, and it’s really f*cking stupid. I think you’ll like it. But the reason I even thought of this is because our producer is our best friend. We’re starting a company. I’ve worked with so many people that I didn’t know and that I didn’t like for so long. It was definitely valuable, but also, f*ck that. We should do a movie together. What the f*ck?

From there, the conversation took several turns, including Stewart’s admission that “I f*cking love texting. It’s a lot of blue on my end and you better f*cking love it.” On that train of thought, Sennott appears to admit tweeting during “lame” sex, although it was probably still better sex than we saw during the most recent episode of The Idol (yikes). Overall, however, this was a trip of an interview and worth enjoying at your leisure.

Shannon Sharpe Got Emotional Thanking Skip Bayless On His Last Day With ‘Undisputed’

Shannon Sharpe officially said goodbye to Undisputed on Tuesday morning, ending a seven-year run sitting opposite Skip Bayless.

It was news the sports media world knew was coming for two weeks, with plenty of speculation on exactly why Sharpe had sought a buyout from Fox Sports. There have been reports of tension with Bayless, particularly over his handling of the Damar Hamlin situation and some on-air disputes with Sharpe, including a particularly fiery interaction where Sharpe called him out for taking a “personal shot” earlier this year.

However, for all of the differences that have pushed them apart and led to Sharpe’s decision to leave the show, there is still a bond between them that is why the show began with those two in the first place. Bayless was insistent on Sharpe being the man opposite him when he left ESPN for Fox Sports, and the two shared an emotional moment on Tuesday to close the show, thanking each other in a rather touching segment.

It’s not often you see this kind of genuine emotion out of Skip, but this was pretty clearly not a performative thing. What comes next for the show remains to be seen, but one would think guests fill-in until they land on a permanent co-host (or go the First Take route with a rotating cast opposite Skip). As for Shannon, he’ll have plenty of opportunities, with Stephen A. Smith extending the invite to join First Take‘s cast, but as they note, doing sports TV every morning is a “voracious beast” and it’s possible Sharpe will look to do his podcast and take some time away before jumping back in to a full-time deal again.

Nudity Enthusiast Charlie Puth Has ‘Always Loved Being Naked’ And Is Down To Admire His ‘Nice Butt’ In The Mirror

If you follow Charlie Puth on social media, there’s a good chance you’ve seen him naked, like when he let his butt breathe in a cheeky promotional photo from late 2022. Now, he’s spoken about his affinity for nudity in a new interview.

In a chat with Interview that was shared today (June 13), Puth said:

“I really have always loved being naked, and I’m going to be careful how I choose my words because I don’t want people to take this the wrong way. Again, I’m not captivated by the way that I look, but I know that I’m not ugly. So sometimes I’d look at myself in the mirror and I’d be like, ‘I really do have kind of a nice butt.’ And what’s wrong with liking your features? I have really long arms and abnormally large hands. That’s probably why I play piano. Even today, I woke up and it’s kind of fun to look at yourself naked and admire your body. […]

I’m not going to ever be inappropriate and naked in front of people who don’t want to see me naked. But If I’m in my backyard, there’s a lot of trees back there and I know that no one’s looking in, I feel safe. You get a lot of vitamin D. Is that what the sun gives? […] But there always could be a possibility that someone has binoculars. It’s just always in the corner of your mind that somebody could be looking, which is always kind of exciting.”

He also noted of flattering responses to his thirst traps, “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t see them. But I don’t do it to force this narrative or anything like that. I’m just in constant mode of celebrating my body.”

Not So Fast, Ryan Seacrest: Whoopi Goldberg Wants To Host ‘Wheel Of Fortune,’ Too

With Pat Sajak announcing his retirement from Wheel of Fortune, the search for his replacement seemed to be wrapped up before it even began. Ryan Seacrest is reportedly the frontrunner for the top gig, but a new challenger may have entered the ring.

During Tuesday morning’s episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg confirmed that she’s interested in the hosting gig. “I want that job,” she said via The Wrap. “I think it would be tons of fun.” While Seacrest is reportedly the frontrunner, according to Bloomberg writer Lucas Shaw, other parties have been talking to Wheel of Fortune producers. Goldberg may just have revealed that she’s one of them.

Goldberg made the announcement while Ken Jennings stopped by The View, and he was not shy about hoping that Wheel of Fortune avoids the same replacement debacle that plagued Jeopardy! following the death of beloved longtime host Alex Trebek.

Via The Wrap:

When the women asked him for his thoughts on Sajak’s retirement — having stepped into the shoes of an equally iconic host when Alex Trebek died — Jennings joked that “hopefully ‘Wheel’s’ got an envelope somewhere that says ‘What to Do When Pat Packs It In.’”

As for whether Whoopi would leave The View to host Wheel of Fortune, she hasn’t showed any strong signs of being frustrated with her current daytime gig. In fact, her job has gotten noticeably easier following the departure of conservative firebrand Meghan McCain. However, Whoopi still has to defuse a few fights every now and then.

Just last week, Goldberg was forced to throw to commercial after an argument between Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah-Griffin went off the rails, causing Whoopi to lecture the two co-hosts.

“Maybe we just need to figure out how we do this again,” Goldberg said to Hostin and Griffin. “Let’s have this break, and let’s figure out how we’re going to make this work.”

Olivia Rodrigo Is Entering Her ‘Vampire’ Era By Announcing The Lead Single From Her Super-Anticipated Second Album

Olivia Rodrigo is jump-starting her sophomore era by officially announcing that her next single, “Vampire,” will arrive on June 30.

Fans had started suspecting that something was on the way after the pop star had dropped a few Easter eggs for it, including circling the date on a calendar in the background of a selfie.

According to a press release, “Vampire” will have the “sound of an artist firmly in control, imbued with a sense of maturity and a bold confidence.” Fans are already loving the cover art and the direction Rodrigo’s new era seems to be going.

“Actually so f*cking obsessed with the way she used the exact Sour color as an accent for the first single to OR2 to mark the transitional period woah,” one fan wrote. The cover art finds Rodrigo in b&w with black lipstick and a purple bandage on her neck.

“If she gives us dark sounding music like this title implies… the gaggery will be intense,” another wrote.

She is currently selling pre-orders of the song on CD and a red vinyl version through her website. On her other social media profiles, Rodrigo also changed the photo to a picture of her eye with the same lilac color of eyeshadow.

Jay-Z Has Received His First-Ever Diamond Song Certification From The RIAA Thanks To A Kanye West Collab

It’s hard to believe for a guy who spent the first decade of his career making a diamond shape with his hands, but Jay-Z has just received his first-ever Diamond single certification from the RIAA. On Monday, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced the 2011 single “N****s In Paris” from Jay-Z and Kanye West‘s collaborative album Watch The Throne had passed 10 million units sold. The achievement marks Kanye’s second diamond certification after the 2007 Graduation lead single “Stronger” crossed the threshold in October 2021.

Hit-Boy, who produced the record, noted the accomplishment on Twitter, drawing a parallel with his groundbreaking work with former Jay-Z rival Nas. “it’s a real blessing to be apart of the song that became jay-z first diamond record and producing the album that won Nas his first grammy,” he wrote. “What a life.” Mike Dean, who also contributed to the track, celebrated receiving his fourth Diamond award.

“Paris” was a record-breaking hit in other respects, as well, becoming known for the number of times the duo would perform encores of the song while on tour. They maxed out at 12 times in — naturally — Paris on June 18, 2012.

Just for the fun of it, you can listen to “N****s In Paris” above.
