The music world was surprised yesterday (June 28) to learn that over the weekend, Madonna was admitted to the hospital and remained in the ICU for days. Now, we have a positive development: CNN reports that according to “a source with knowledge of the matter,” Madonna was discharged from the hospital and transported to her home in New York by a private ambulance. The source noted, “She’s in the clear.”
“A source” also told People, “She’s back home and feeling better.”
The news of Madonna’s hospital visit was initially shared by Guy Oseary, the pop icon’s longtime manager. In a post shared on Instagram, he explained, “On Saturday June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which lead to a several day stay in the ICU. Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected. At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour. We will share more details with you soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows.”
Madonna herself has yet to publicly address the situation. There has also not been an update about the status of Madonna’s upcoming tour. The Celebration Tour was announced in early 2023 and is currently scheduled to start Vancouver’s Rogers Arena on July 15.

The Dallas Mavericks acquired Kyrie Irving ahead of the NBA’s trade deadline last year with the hopes that they could convince him to stick around long-term. While the Mavs do seem like the favorite to retain his services as he enters unrestricted free agency this summer, a new report indicates that he’s at least going to do his due diligence before signing a new deal with the team.
According to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report, Irving is going to sit down with the Phoenix Suns right when the NBA’s free agency period begins on June 30 at 6 p.m. EST. Phoenix, of course, currently has Irving’s close friend and former teammate with the Brooklyn Nets, Kevin Durant. Having said that, as Haynes noted, it would be incredibly difficult for Irving — who is eligible for a 5-year, $272 million extension with the Mavericks — to come to terms on a deal with the Suns.
It would be difficult for the Suns to add Irving due to the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement. If they acquired him via sign-and-trade, they would be hard-capped at the first salary-cap apron, which is currently projected to be $172 million. They also aren’t expected to have access to the $12.4 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception or the $5 million taxpayer mid-level exception at the moment.
Perhaps the two sides could work out some sort of sign-and-trade deal for Irving with Deandre Ayton — it’s worth mentioning that the Suns and the Mavericks were reportedly close to a deal during the NBA Draft that would have sent Ayton to Dallas, although there’s no indication that the teams would rekindle those conversations with Irving involved. Earlier this week, Ramona Shelburne of ESPN reported that Irving hopes that his next team will be the final one for which he plays during his NBA career.
None of that matters to Barbz after Thursday morning’s (June 29) news about Minaj’s forthcoming album, nostalgically titled Pink Friday 2.
“Dear Barbz, I’ve been trying to find the right time to tell you this for a few days. Due to some really exciting news that I’ll share with you guys @ a later time, I’ve shifted the album date just a tad bit,” Minaj captioned an Instagram post. “Trust me, it’ll be WELL WORTH THE WAIT…but since I AM shifting the date just a tad, I’d like to give you guys a tiny SIP of some more album tea so that I don’t have to get cussed out so…here it goes: MY NEW ALBUM WILL BE RELEASED ON 11.17.23- [pink bow emoji] and she shall be called: Pink Friday 2 [pink bow emoji.”
Minaj continued, “I love you guys so much. I am so grateful for the years of support & love you guys have given me. At times maybe I didn’t even deserve all that you have poured into me. Nonetheless, you. will. love. this. album. I will give tour deets closer to that time, but obviously the tour will start around the first quarter of 2024. I’ll also share the REAL album cover at a later date.”

The latest victim of this plague is breakout rap star Sexyy Red, who was forced to cut short a recent outdoor performance after someone in the crowd reportedly threw water bottles and balls on stage. In a fan-posted video, Red can be seen flouncing offstage while declaring, “I’m gone! Y’all throwing sh*t, I’m gone!” And while the DJ tries to keep the crowd hype with some explosions (seriously, though, these do not work. Knock it off), there’s a palpable sense of disappointment as Red exits stage left.

It’s a shame that so many breakout stars have to put up with this nonsense. And while COVID caused a lot of disappointment by shutting down live entertainment for a year, this sort of thing is getting even more frustrating, because who wants to pay today’s ticket prices, get dressed up, pay for parking and overpriced drinks, all to have the performers get pissed off by some feral asshole in the crowd with no sense of boundaries and leave early? Let’s all hope these folks get this trollish energy out of their systems because things are already bad enough as it is.
Last month, Boston-based musician Anjimile announced his new album The King and released the title track. He’s back today with the new single “Father.”
“I wrote this song with my parents in mind as a sort of gesture of appreciation and love for everything they did to try and support me before, during, and after I went to rehab and got sober in early 2016,” Anjimile said in a press release. “Thanks, mom and dad.”
The song is a gentle ballad with the texture of a hymn: “Are you still drinking? / What were you thinking? / On my heart, weighing / I am still praying,” he lulls over delicate strumming.
The King follows 2020’s powerful Giver/Taker. Since then, he shared the one-off song “Stranger,” about which he said, “‘Stranger’ is something of a confrontation between my past and present selves in relationship to my trans identity. I started testosterone about 3 or 4 years ago, and it’s been simultaneously liberating and alarming to note the changes to my mind and body over the years. ‘Stranger’ is an admission to myself that, while I welcome all of those changes — especially the deepening effect of testosterone on my singing and speaking voice — it’s still scary and there is a degree of internal ambivalence to my transition.”

The King is out 9/8 via 4AD. Find more information here.
“When it comes to Big Latto and DJ Von, it’s always on the floor!” her official tour DJ said.
Nominated for Best Collaboration and Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, Latto’s “Put It On Da Floor” performance was inspired by her Walmart runs with the gang on TikTok, taking the supermarket to Culture’s Biggest Night as she energized the crowd with choreography and a bit of extra sauce to emphasize some of her lyrics. It got everyone dropping low — even Boosie Badazz, who fell hard on his ass.
Wearing an all-white outfit that mirrored a plastic bag with “I been acting brand new” in red letters as its logo, her performance concluded with plastic bags being thrown at her feet. She ripped out of her top like she was, ahem, acting brand new as the lights when dark, and the camera zoomed in on “RIP Shawty Lo” to pay respect to his song “Dunn Dunn,” which Latto references in her hook.
Later in the evening, Latto won Best Female Hip-Hop Artist over Cardi B, Coi Leray, GloRilla, Ice Spice, Megan Thee Stallion, and Nicki Minaj. Visibly excited on stage, Latto said she wasn’t going to cry this year.
“Shout out to all the other women in the category, all the women to pave the way for this to even be possible,” Latto said. “This category is going crazy this year. Shout out to some women I think should’ve been in the category: Doechii, Maiya the Don, Flo Milli, Mello Buckzz, TiaCorine. Shout out to all the women, we killing it. This is the year of women. Hopefully, we gonna see an all-female tour very soon.”
The accolade doesn’t lie. Latto’s time is now. Fans are obsessed with shouting back the opening line, “Rip me out the plastic, I been acting brand new” when they hear “Put It On Da Floor” and “Put It On Da Floor Again,” the song’s remix with Cardi B. It’s a memorable lyric that fueled a “Rip Me Out The Plastic” TikTok challenge that has people embracing being fresh out of the box in appearance, hairstyles, nail transformations, academic achievements… you name it.
The 24-year-old rapper’s latest single finds her swinging the pendulum from the upbeat, pop sound heard in “Lottery” and “Big Energy” back to familiar territory: she’s popping off over a hard-hitting beat. “Put It On Da Floor Again” is bold and addictive, with bars on bars for captions from both Big Latto and Bardi. It has all the right ingredients to deem it the song of the summer, following a formula that Latto has mastered as a Gen Z artist who keeps her Jackpots engaged through social media, where she talks directly to them, and curates her singles for a TikTok generation who consumes them religiously.
Produced by Go Grizzly, Squat Beats, and Pooh Beatz, Latto’s original version, “Put It On Da Floor,” was released officially on streaming services on April 21, with the video serving as a Coachella 2023 recap that seemingly responded to claims that she doctored photos of her crowd. Latto’s versatility as a hitmaker shows in how much Clayton County has raised her, never going too mainstream to infuse a song with explicit lyrics and Atlanta strip club swagger.
When she was catching flack for the change-up in style for “Big Energy,” she told Uproxx in our 2021 December cover story, “I wanted to push myself. I wanted to challenge myself. Honestly, when you’ve been rapping since eight years old, you got to find new inspiration and new sparks. I just wanted to try something different and I didn’t really give a fuck whether people liked it or they didn’t because this was for me.” The point is, Latto is finally free to rap about what she wants to rap about after her “Big Energy” moment, as long as it remains meaningful to her.
Latto is an example of someone who takes it on the chin and keeps pushing. It’s why people love her immense Capricorn energy too. She hustles every new single like it’s the next one to pop regardless of outside forces working against her. Early predictions indicated that the contenders for “Song of the Summer” were Lil Uzi Vert’s “Just Wanna Rock” and Coi Leray’s “Players,” both Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits. But the pool has now widened to include not only “Put It On Da Floor Again,” but Sexyy Red’s “Pound Town,” IDK’s “Pinot Noir,” DaBaby’s “SHAKE SUMN,” and Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar’s “The Hillbillies.” Depending on who you ask, there’s no clear winner yet.
Latto’s strategy of doing a remix extends the life cycle of her record just like “Big Energy” getting a remix by Mariah Carey and DJ Khaled, which helped it move from No. 14 to No. 3 on the Hot 100 in 2022. This time around, Latto showed her Jackpots that Cardi B would be on “Put It On Da Floor Again” by participating in her own “Rip Me Out the Plastic” challenge for the reveal. Cardi B’s Midas touch helped boost streams previously when she was a guest feature on GloRilla’s “Tomorrow 2” and Kay Flock’s “Shake It.”
Since “Put It On Da Floor Again” released on June 2, Latto has been captured at strip clubs rapping along to the song, throwing fresh ones on the floor with a plastic bag over her head. By mid-June, “Put It On Da Floor Again” debuted at No. 13 and is currently at No. 39 on the Hot 100 in the week ending on July 1, supporting Cardi B’s streak of working with new female rappers and keeping the unity strong.
Cardi B has been a fan of Latto since 2020, where you can pull receipts of her talking to Bardi Gang about her and encouraging her to drop “Another Nasty Song” by teasing its lyrics. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion also featured Latto in the “WAP” video alongside breakout stars like Normani, Rosalía, Sukihana, and Rubi Rose because Cardi liked her music and believed she would break into the mainstream.
“I am so proud,” Cardi told Latto during an IG Live before the midnight release of “Put It On Da Floor Again.” “’Cause I have been in the studio for a couple of months, and it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, I want her to win so bad.’” She added the record inspired her to return to the booth after dealing with anxiety over releasing music.
“I’ve been patiently waiting my turn,” Latto replied. “I have seen her probably two-three times. I probably sent her two-three songs and she always responds every time, the realest bitch ever. And it just ended up being the time.”
“Put It On Da Floor Again” is incredibly catchy because Latto and Cardi B are genuine friends. In interviews, Latto has given praise to Cardi B for being in her corner, sharing advice on things she’s done before, and remaining focused. The video features cameos by the producer Go Grizz, Cardi B’s husband Offset, and Louisiana State University forward Angel Reese. Latto and Cardi B’s on-screen chemistry is cute as they turn up at a house party and a high-end jewelry store. They are having so much fun that it adds to the song’s playfulness when you hear it outside.
Both are about finding organic collaborators that aren’t manufactured by their labels or A&Rs. That’s why you hear Cardi B matching her cadence and flow, taking extra care in ensuring every line just had enough words. “I had to make sure the bars weren’t too long and they weren’t too short,” Cardi said during an IG Live breaking down her verse while munching on some Popeye’s. “Every single time I kept rapping I was like, ‘God fucking damn, I feel like I’m missing a word. And then we would add a word and now it’s too much fucking words. It was kinda hard, but we made it.”
To have a shot at the Song of the Summer title is making a record that’ll be undeniably everywhere. Latto and Cardi B are working “Put It On Da Floor Again” at every major concert appearance so far, performing it at Summer Jam 2023 and Birthday Bash ATL when 21 Savage brought them out. The impact is starting to be felt, where people bring plastic bags to the club to rip themselves out of it and court correspondents are dropping lyrics during trial recaps to lighten the mood. The momentum includes getting her friends Yung Miami and GloRilla to do their own versions, a nostalgic nod to blog-era freestyles.
There are still plenty of days of summer left to crown a champion. If this prediction becomes a spoiler, “Put It On Da Floor Again” is going down in history as one of those songs leading a cultural reset of rap fans embracing female rap anthems and their ratchet sides again.

Hot off his win for best screenplay at Cannes for Monster, Yuji Sakamoto has scored a 5-year contract to make movies and shows at Netflix, signaling a continuation of the streaming company’s dedication to more Japanese language content and (presumably) that they’re happy with what they’ve seen of Sakamoto’s large budget mystery film In Love and Deep Water.
“Yuji Sakamoto continues to create a variety of masterpieces, ranging from socially conscious works to lighter comedies and love stories, that capture our hearts and minds and keep us coming back for more,” said Kaata Sakamoto, Netflix’s VP of Content, in a statement. “We look forward to bringing Sakamoto’s unique, original storytelling to a global stage, coupled with the very best production environment and creative partnerships to realize his vision.”
This is great news for fans. Hopefully Sakamoto shook hands on a better deal than Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, who reportedly boosted Netflix’s value by almost a billion dollars without receiving any kind of bonus and without retaining his intellectual property rights.
Obviously it’s too early to tell what Sakamoto will write for Netflix beyond In Love and Deep Water (with drops later this year), but given Sakamoto’s history with adapting manga and Netflix’s interest in doing more after Alice in Borderland, it’s a safe bet that we might see at least one adaptation from him.
The 2022-23 season was a surprisingly good one for the Utah Jazz, as they were in the Play-In hunt until late in the season when they eventually shut things down and shifted attention to the future. After trading Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell in the offseason, few expected them to be in that position, but they got strong seasons from the likes of Lauri Markkanen, who became an All-Star, and Jordan Clarkson to propel them to a pleasantly surprising year.
Clarkson averaged 20.8 points, 4.4 assists, and four rebounds per game, continuing his strong play in Utah over the last few years, and had the potential to cash in on that success this summer by hitting the open market. However, Clarkson made the decision to stick around in Utah, as Sarah Todd of the Deseret News reports that Clarkson will pick up the player option for the final year of his contract.
I’m told Jordan Clarkson will exercise his player option to stay with the Utah Jazz for the 2023-24 season, according to league sources. This leaves the door open for the Jazz to extend his contract.
Clarkson is entering the final year of a 4-year, $51.5 million deal that he signed back in 2020, and this year, he’s slated to make a little more than $14 million. While the Jazz are largely in the midst of a youth movement, Clarkson has been a steady presence over the years, and won the 2020-21 Sixth Man of the Year award for his play off the bench. As Todd noted, the two sides can now sit down and work towards a contract extension that would keep him in Utah beyond this year.
From troubling double decker seat ideas to tales of horrible plane etiquette, airline travel stories are pretty unsavory at the moment. Which makes this wholesome account of a solo plane ride feel like a total upgrade.
After a near 18 hours delay, everybody except for Phil Stringer had given up on a flight heading from Oklahoma City to Charlotte. Stringer dedicated to make the best of his impromptu private flight, and it ended up being a blast for everyone involved.
Documenting the journey in a now-viral TikTok video, Stringer begins with a joke. His on-screen caption reads, “When you buy every single ticket on the plane so you don’t have to deal with people” as he walks on board.
Then, cut to: “Just kidding, it was delayed 18 hours and everyone else gave up” as Stringer explains that he is “the only person on the plane, and they have an entire flight crew” who “do not want to do this flight.”
Don’t let his self-deprecating humor fool, Stringer made friends with every employee that day. Flight attendants could barely contain their laughter as they performed a safety routine—with far more sassiness than normal—to their audience of one.
Stringer ends the clip with a sweet picture of himself with the cabin crew.
Folks in the comments section were quick to remark how Stringer’s uplifting attitude probably made the flight worth doing.
“That’s probably the best flight they ever had,” one person wrote.
Another added, “Flight attendant here. This is literally our dream scenario, especially for a delayed flight. So glad you had a nice time.”
Apparently, the comedy keeps going even after the plane lands. In a follow-up video, Stringer gave an update to say that when he finally touched down in Charlotte at 4 o’clock in the morning, he couldn’t get home because his bag was missing. Like, how does that happen with only one bag on the entire flight? Mabye there really are airplane gremlins after all.
Still, Stringer optimism remains. In an interview with Insider, he shared, “I believe that your attitude determines your destination. Yeah, it was a sucky day. No one wants to stay in the airport for 18 hours, but if you have a positive view, you can turn something into a lot of fun.”
Wise words. Indeed, we can’t control a lot of what goes on during our flight. But one thing we can always control is how we treat the situation and those around us. That goes double for airline workers, who not only have to deal with the stress of flight travel for a lot longer than we do, they are often the punching bag for other passengers. Simply being kind to them is enough to turn an entire flight around. In a good way, that is.
