NBA commissioner Adam Silver spends most of his public appearances being very serious as he discusses league business. Usually he is being asked about things like larger plans for the future (like the in-season tournament or expansion) or how the NBA is handling a delicate situation, like the investigation into Ja Morant‘s latest video holding a gun on Instagram Live.
As such, there aren’t a lot of opportunities for him to show off a sense of humor, but he couldn’t help but make a sly little joke while ending an interview with Dan Patrick on Thursday. As they talked about players carrying the ball and Adam Sandler, Patrick joked he would get the Sandman to do a PSA for an Anti-Carrying Program for the NBA. That opened the door for Silver to make a subtle crack about how an “Anti-Carrying Program” could hold a double meaning, seemingly referencing the ongoing saga with Morant.
Gotta love to Commissioner Silver leaning into the joke at the end of the interview pic.twitter.com/1LiBXArf9A
It’s kind of jarring to see Silver let this one fly given he typically stays buttoned up, but Patrick seemed to be right on it and understood he was referring to Morant. I also think this is less him making light of the situation and more expressing a little exasperation that this is the second time Morant has found himself in this spot, but I also have little doubt there will be some who are upset with the remark.
While we’d love to get paid to just lounge around in a pool all day, that’s what PTO is truly for (no seriously, make sure you take all of your PTO this year). There’s also an oversized 10-foot-long fire pit for staying warm under the vast stars and relishing in the unobstructed views of the valley and snow-capped Mount Gorgonio.

EDITOR’S PICK — The Onyx House: Secluded Villa, Pool & Yoga Deck
As I’ve written before, this is my favorite pool on the sexiness scale. It’s concrete and saltwater and the deck isn’t slippery and it just generally feels like it’s an ideal place for lounging in super sexy swimsuits with the occasional dip mixed in. The home is incredibly private and quiet and — I swear — if you can find me a more well-appointed Airbnb, where you really think “wow, this team didn’t miss a thing,” I’ll be shocked.
Plus the hot tub is enormous. And oh, those Joshua Tree night skies. Yeah, if you have “secluded summer getaway” longings, this is the place.

Knowing where on Earth your kids are can at least take one thing off a worried parent’s mind. But every parent knows that getting kids to send a quick “Hey I’m alive and at a friend’s house” text is sometimes as easy as pulling teeth…or getting them to clean the bathroom.
And while there are plenty of downloadable apps that make tracking easier, soon there will be an option built right into your iPhone, making relief even easier to access.
On June 5, Apple announced at an annual conference event that there would be a new iOS 17 iMessage feature called “Check In” which would send automated travel updates to selected contacts.
This feature differs from other similar Apple add-ons like Find My Friends or Location Services, which can track your location all of the time. For iPhones with the latest iOS update, Check In can be found in iMessage’s new expandable app menu (the little plus sign to the left of the text field).
Users can open a thread with whoever they’d like to be alerted when they get to a certain location. Check In then gives an estimate of how long it will take to get there, whether you’re walking or driving. And if the estimate needs adjusting, simply hit the big “Edit” button.
For additional safety precautions, Check In will literally “check in” with you if something seems off during your travel. If you need help or don’t answer, loved ones will be pinged with helpful information like your current location, battery level and cell service status. Plus all the information shared is end-to-end encrypted.
“Whether you’re walking home after dark or going for an early morning run, you can start checking with a family member or friend to let them know when you get home safely…[It’s]an easy way to feel reassured that your loved ones have your back,” an Apple representative is heard saying at the conference in a video captured by an audience member who shared it to TikTok.
That audience member, who describes herself as a “crime junkie listener and a mom of 4,” expressed gratitude for the new feature, calling it an “amazing” way to “potentially save lives.”
The use of tracking devices isn’t without its own dangers or controversy. Certainly, bad actors may use them for stalking purposes. And parents having constant surveillance over their kids has been seen by some as an invasion of privacy (which is perhaps why Check In is created a little differently). But still, as with any technology, it can be a huge asset when used wisely.
Blxst and Tyga are rapidly becoming one of my favorite combos in music. Their previous collab, “Chosen” with Ty Dolla Sign, has been a staple of my warm-weather playlists for the past two years and now, they’ve joined forces once again, just in time to contribute to this year’s picnic soundtracks. Joining them this time around is Tyga’s fellow Compton rapper YG for the throwback park jam “West Coast Weekend” (yes, I am officially claiming Tyga as a Comptonite now. It’s been long enough.)
The track samples a familiar funk staple — everybody with an uncle over fifty knows Cameo’s 1986 neck-breaker “Candy” — while Blxst croons a hook ready-made for summertime house parties. Tyga and YG have both stepped up their respective rap games a lot in the past couple of years, but here, the vibes do the heavy lifting — which just makes their efforts all the more admirable. YG’s verse especially is packed with clever wordplay and interesting use of quirky pockets in the beat that makes me even more curious about the duo’s upcoming joint album, which they announced at Rolling Loud earlier this year. Blxst also sounds great here, stoking anticipation for his own album which is presumably dropping soon.
Listen to Tyga and YG’s “West Coast Weekend” above.
Before there were toxic siblings battling it out on the screen every night, there were dysfunctionally lovable siblings, still battling it out on the screen but on a much smaller scale! This is why Malcolm in the Middlebecame so popular. Its premise was so simple: you have a sibling that you probably don’t get along with, and you will do everything in your power to gain dominance over them. Even if it’s just to have remote privileges. These were the important things in the early 2000s!
Now that so much time has passed, Bryan Cranston, who played Hal in the popular sitcom, thinks it’s the best time to check back in with the unnamed family. “I’m curious about that family 20 years later,” Cranston told GQ in a new profile. “What happened to them? Where are they? What are the kids doing? They’re grown men now.” Assuming they didn’t kill each other, the five boys would be in their late thirties and early forties. Maybe they will have graduated college by then, but no promises.
Even though Cranston said he misses his TV family “like crazy,” he also misses his real family. He admitted that he would want to retire from acting in the coming years, meaning that a Malcolm reunion should be on the table sooner rather than later.
Luckily, the boys are mostly on board. Last fall, Frankie Muniz said he would be “totally down” for a follow-up to the hit series. “[Cranston]’s kind of heading writing the script and getting everything rolling, so there might be something,” Muniz said when a potential reboot was mentioned. Where would the boys be now? Married? Divorced? Owning a tech start-up? There are so many possibilities that must be addressed. We should also learn their last name.
As if the topic of AI content isn’t controversial enough, Ron DeSantis‘ campaign brought a heaping helping of politics into the mix by releasing an ad featuring AI-generated images of Donald Trump hugging Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Thanks to his prominent role during the coronavirus pandemic, Fauci has been a bogeyman to conservatives who bristled at the thought of protecting others by wearing masks, getting vaccinated, or simply not eating inside Arby’s for a few weeks. As the governor of Florida, DeSantis routinely bucked any public safety measures during the pandemic, and this latest campaign ad attempts to paint Trump as too cowardly to fire Fauci.

— DeSantis War Room (@DeSantisWarRoom) June 5, 2023
However, the ad isn’t going over well in right-wing circles. Republican Senator J.D. Vance has already condemned the computer generated campaign spot, but without specifically mentioning DeSantis.
“Smearing Donald Trump with fake AI images is completely unacceptable,” Vance tweeted. “I’m not sharing them, but we’re in a new era. Be even more skeptical of what you see on the internet.”

In response to the conservative backlash, Never Back Down, the pro-DeSantis Super PAC defended the campaign ad in a statement to Mediaite: “No campaign has pushed more misleading deepfakes, false photoshops, and outright fabrications than the Trump campaign. It is 100% true that Donald Trump empowered and embraced Fauci — he even gave him a presidential commendation.”
Samantha Rivera of CBS Miami stiff-armed an obnoxious fan on live TV during the Stanley Cup Finals in Las Vegas on Monday, June 5. The clip caught the attention of millions on social media because she perfectly blocks the Golden Knights fan from interrupting her live shot while maintaining her composure.
Unfortunately, she had to be prepared to fend off the fan because unruly behavior amongst sports fans has become far too common these days. Rivera used the moment to remind fans back at home about how to behave at a hockey game. “That’s the kind of fan you don’t want to be, right?” she said while fending off the intruder.
The clip of Rivera received over 3 million views when it was shared by Awful Announcing, with many fans praising her stiff arm.
u201cTalking about Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final, stiff-arming a fan trying to get on camera and getting into the highlights. nnQuite the display of multitasking by Samantha Rivera of CBS Miamiu201d
Riviera later told Sports Illustrated that she had an eye on the fan and his buddy because she could see them watching her before they went live. That’s why she was prepared to react if the man interfered with the live shot. “Thankfully, it was him just trying to be annoying and get in the shot and make his way on, but it could’ve been worse. You don’t really know in those situations,” Rivera told Sports Illustrated.
When asked if she has any other advice for sports reporters who need to deal with a drunk fan, she said, “Eat your veggies. Go to the gym. Do what you can.”
The big takeaway from Rivera’s viral moment is that Rivera reminded everyone out there that they don’t want to be the drunk and unruly fan at the game. But these days, it feels like there is an epidemic of people who forget that it’s just a game. And that problem extends all the way to youth sports, where parents’ inappropriate behavior has become a real problem.
Why is it that spectator sports routinely make people lose control? Psychologists say that it relates to social identity theory. “The theory goes that people have a need to belong to groups and that membership in these groups provides a basis for their social identification and self-esteem,” Sports Management Hub reports. This is why people so passionately identify with a particular team.
When two groups of people are pitted against one another with their collective identities on the line, there is likely to be friction.
In addition, psychologists believe that sporting events are a way for people to act out their frustrations in life in socially acceptable ways. “Many people don’t have many options to let out their stress and frustration at home or at work. An energetic atmosphere like that of a sports match gives them a reason to let loose,” Sports Management Hub reports.
Then, people are even more likely to act out when things get exciting in the game.
But for the people out there who don’t get the message and are going to act the fool at the next Stanley Cup playoff game, be sure you don’t do it around Samantha Rivera.
Just a month after getting fired from his Fox News hosting gig, Tucker Carlson is back on camera spewing the kind of conspiracy theories that made his reputation. Instead, Elon Musk has apparently offered Carlson a safe space to shout about how hard it is to be a wealthy white man in today’s society.
It only took one episode of Tucker on Twitter — no points for originality to be earned here — for the host to spout enough vitriol to get the head of the Anti-Defamation League, Jonathan Greenblatt, to condemn Carlson’s new program and issue a stark warning to Musk.
“For years @TuckerCarlson slyly wove anti-Jewish conspiracies into his show on @FoxNews — attacking George Soros, slandering Paul Singer, and making other unfounded claims. Now the mask is fully off,” Greenblatt wrote. “He opened his new ‘show’ on @Twitter by describing Zelensky as ‘sweaty and rat-like’ and ‘a persecutor of Christians.’ Complete lie. Even if you disagree with US foreign policy, invoking antisemitic imagery and tropes is a perverse and prejudicial way to build a case.”
Carlson, who looked to have filmed the episode from the inside of a barn with the kind of low-budget equipment that meant doors could be heard slamming in the background, touched on everything from Jeffrey Epstein to BLM, but it was antisemitism in discussing Russia’s assault on Ukraine that stole the show.
“Tucker scared major advertisers off FOX Primetime for years. He traded in conspiracies. He appealed to cranks. Now this — at a time when #antisemitism is surging in America and around the world,” Greenblatt continued before appealing to new Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino. “If @lindayacc wants to attract Fortune 500 advertisers and @elonmusk wants to create a genuine public square, it might be wise not to give this obvious antisemite such a huge megaphone. Let Tucker and his ilk push their hate somewhere else.”
Greenblatt’s full thread is below:

That Fox lawsuit will make this even more of a mess.
For the past week, social media users have been marveling — and fretting — over photos of the New York City skyline as a haze of smoke from Canadian wildfires has rendered the air quality a murky shade of orange (and not very safe to breathe). The tableau has been compared to the aesthetic of films like Blade Runner and Dune, with one post I saw today drawing an unhinged parallel to the Wes Anderson memes that have been going around online lately.
Not to be outdone, Twitter’s reigning queen of audacious statements, Cardi B, made a truly wild comparison for the eerie scene in the NY sky. “I kid you not the sky is literally yellow today,” the “Tomorrow 2” rapper wrote. “It’s giving smoking on opps.”
I kid you not the sky is literally yellow today …It’s giving smoking on opps
Meanwhile, other New York artists have also commented on the situation in their own ways. 50 Cent, internet troll extraordinaire, cracked “I’m headed to the store, if anybody need anything just call me,” on Instagram next to a still from Blade Runner 2049 from the scene where Ryan Gosling’s K enters the irradiated ruins of Las Vegas.
Questlove of The Roots, however, found humor in the world right outside his window. He posted a photo of a Diabo IV billboard reading “welcome to hell” and noted the “divine timing,” calling it “genius marketing.” In a separate post, though, he begged his followers to start taking climate change seriously.
So far, the poor conditions haven’t prompted New York-based events to shut down yet; Governor’s Ball is set to proceed as scheduled this weekend. However, some performers on Broadway reported difficulty breathing, halting shows due to the smoke, so it’s possible that performances could be affected at the festival as well.
Cardi B is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
